How to be the best in Real Estate.......2007-07-26
Gary Keller tells it like it should be. If you have a true servant's heart and want to help people with the skill and knowledge you have as a Realtor, this is the book to read. He gives a number of techniques but ultimately, he makes it clear that you need to want to do what is best for your client - not your pocket. Excellent book, I recommend this to every new agent I work with. Need a plan to get started right, Gary is the man with the plan!
A Primer on doing business.......2007-07-14
There are many books available that address sales and marketing for the real estate agent but very few provide solid advice on how to run a real estate business. This easy to follow book provides information that, if applied will set any agent apart from his peers.
A must read! Changed my career!.......2007-06-27
After the first 6 months in business (I've just finished my 3rd year), I decided to buy a number of Real Estate instructional books on how to sell Real Estate. I had a feeling this would be the best. I saved it for last. I read 4 other books over the holidays (about a 4 week period). The other books were good, but redundant and nothing that changed me. I started to read this book and immedietely knew that this book was different. It gave specific direction on what has worked for successful people. Not just successful people here and there, but the book took a scientific approach to identify common practices among groups of successful Realtors.
The result? I can't say that I do everything that the book says to do. I should! But, I have taken parts of the books and implemented those practices. The year after reading this book I made the top 20% in the market. The following year I made the top 15%. And this year is off the charts. I'm not sure where I will end up, but top 10 or better.
There is no substitute for hard work, but I would rather work hard the right way. Best of luck!
You've Got To Be Open To A Unique Perspective.......2007-06-23
This is the best book on the market on how to organize and run a real estate agent business. Its principles are applicable whether you are a brand new agent, or have years of experience. That said, if you are looking for a book to explain listings per se, or working with buyers per se, then this might not be the right book for you -- this book looks at being an agent from a much broader (and more important in my opinion) perspective than that. If you are smart (if you "get it") then you will realize that the things taught in this book are far more important to your ultimate success than any book you might read on how to take a listing. Buy this book, read it ten times, and when you think you understand it read it ten more times! Its message is that important! Few understand this.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and am affiliated with a Keller Williams office in Chicago. That said, rest assured that my affiliation with Keller Williams does not affect my integrity with respect to my review of this book -- honestly, it is a good book that you should read. For what it's worth, I am the author of another real estate related book that can also be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording. It's part of the "WealthLoop Series" and unlike many real estate books, it is an actual "how to" book as opposed to a "rah-rah" book and comes complete with forms, checklists, leases -- everything the beginning investor needs to get started. Agents from across the country have been telling me that my book finally taught them the right way to work with residential investors.
I would suggest that you buy both mine and Gary Keller's books.
Useless.......2007-06-19
I am a rookie agent and found the material worthless, a complete waste of money and time. There is no real technique here. The book so repetitive its agonizing. The worst part is it really has nothing to do with real estate, I learned NOTHING about the real estate business reading this book. You could re title the book an infinite number of times and have the same content "The Millionaire Day Care Worker" for example. There is as much information about running a day care as there is real estate. Steer clear.

Book Description
Uncertain where to start, how to coordinate endless double feedings, or how to control the whirlwind? Don't worry -- Elizabeth Lyons and her "multiples" sorority will get you through. For real-world strategies on coordinating endless double feedings, getting the babies on a schedule (preferably the same one), and appearing to have it (and them) under control while out and about, Ready or Not...Here We Come! is the hilarious, tell-it-like-it-is resource no parent of twins should be without.
In her first humor-packed guide to raising twins, Elizabeth Lyons highlights the experiences and strategies of a group of friends who met in a multiples birthing class, and survived their pregnancies and first year with twins together.
Lyons provides the all-important feeling of camaraderie that will keep expectant and new parents of twins smiling and optimistic, and remind them through it all how blessed they are (even when they feel as though they haven't slept in weeks). Ready or Not...Here We Come! combines strategies that Lyons has gleaned from friends, doctors, nurses, and even perfect strangers to form one concise guide that will undeniably prepare those expecting twins as well as new parents of twins to complete that all-important first year.
Topics include:
- Preparing the Lair: Mandatory Gear for Babies and Mom
- Getting Organized: The Key to Success
- Getting Those Babies on a Schedule -- Preferably the Same One!
- Out and About with Twins: Methods of Appearing As Though You've Got It (and Them) Under Control.
"Ready or Not...Here We Come! is the advice you need in the short, funny format your sleep-deprived mind can absorb. Elizabeth Lyons tells it like it is in a laugh-out-loud look at the uncertainty, craziness, and absolute of your first year with twins. An absolute must-have for every mother who wished there were two of her to keep up with the two of them." - Lisa Earle McLeod, author of Forget Perfect
"Elizabeth Lyons' humorous yet realistic perspective provides new parents of twins with a great starting point from which to embark on that all-important first year." - Dr. Bob Covert, Leading Chicagoland Neonatologist
"Elizabeth Lyons tells it like it really is. From helping you survive back-to-back feedings, living with the stereophonic crying, and coping with a double round of diaper rash, she tells you what to do, what to buy, and what to ignore. My twins are now teenagers, and as a woman who felt like she was the only one coping with double Mommying, I would have sold my soul for practical, supportive advice like this. There is a light at the end of the twins tunnel, and Ready or Not will help you find it. Where was Elizabeth Lyons when my twins were little?" - Kristy Lucariello, President of Performance in Practice and mother of teenage twins
"Finally
a humor-filled, solution-packed, tell-it-like-it-is guide to the first year with twins!" - Betty Jean Young, BSN
Look for Elizabeth's second book, Ready or Not...There We Go! this summer.
Customer Reviews:
Good Plane read.......2007-05-29
I think this book is great; I enjoyed all of the anecdotes about the multiple society. Very good read although not very technically informative.
A cute, informative resource .......2007-04-11
I've read several books on life with twins, and they've all been at least a little helpful and funny. But this is the first I've read where the author already had a toddler before the twins came, and so it was nice to get her perspective and understand what that reality will be like for me. I like that the author really did have some good ideas and based on diverse experiences (she did breastfeed, and then switched to formula, so she understands pros/cons and strategies of both), and she has her circle of moms-of-multiples friends whose experience she draws on and shares as well.
One thing I noticed missing from the book was reference to or strategies for handling life with babies while they're stuck for a time in the NICU. I was looking forward to understanding how we might manage NICU visits with a preschooler at home.
I realize that there is no magic answer on how to deal with life with twins, but in my opinion, this book does indeed do a good job. If you're looking for another similar book to read, I'd also recommend Twinspiration by Cheryl Lage, especially if these are your first babies and you don't have other children at home. Also, for general multiples-pregnancy info, I highly suggest buying When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads by Barbara Luke.
Loved it!.......2007-03-21
This is a good book that I would recommend to anyone who is expecting twins or more. The author definately has a since of humor. This book gives you some good advise. It is also light hearted and fun to read at the same time. There were definately some laugh out loud moments while reading this book.
Marriage venting not advice.......2007-02-04
The author seems to spend the more time complaining about what her husband doesn't do then giving real advice. I was very disappointed it the book.
more for entertainment than for advice.......2006-12-15
As others have said, I read this while I was pregnant and it didn't mean much to me -- then after the babies were born, I found myself scouring it for anything that would help me cope. I found that it contained mostly comic relief, rather than practical advice, but that's useful too. One of my few memories from the foggy "fourth trimester" is of reading parts of the book out loud to my parents, laughing at how completely she hit the nail on the head. I agree that she gives breastfeeding very short shrift, so if you are already BF or determined to do so, don't follow her advice -- get a good book like "Mothering Multiples" and a good lactation consultant. Contrary to a previous reviewer's claim, she does, however, tell you how to go to the supermarket, though I still recommend waiting till DH gets home and then going by yourself (or napping on the couch while he goes!).

In candid terms the book explains what intimidation is, why you become intimidated, and how you can avoid the mental lapses that can cause even the most successful people to sometimes fall victim to intimidation.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2007-08-24
I thought this book was very interesting and offered some really good tips for anyone in sales, namely the emphasis on positioning yourself as THE professional.
However, I found the author's writing to be too focused on the greedy pursuit of money. To me, there is more to sales (and commercial real estate brokerage) than simply accumulating "chips", as the author calls them. Furthermore, I do not feel that there are only 3 types of people, and that all want to keep you from getting your money.
All of that said, I think this book offers valuable insight with little fluff. Every salesperson/agent should read this book, if for no other reason than to read the cool stories the author tells about his business.
A True Classic!.......2007-07-28
This is a new, rewritten version of the classic "Winning through Intimidation". And chances are, if you haven't heard of this one it's not about what you think. It's packed with solid information on how to create the right image in a prospect's or opponents mind to put you in the position of power. Ringer shows how to use their perception of you to your advantage. And it's all packaged around a fun, slightly irreverent character that lets the author poke fun at himself while teaching the reader incredibly valuable lessons.
This book is a must for anyone who ever does sales, or engages in any kind of negotiations (and who doesn't??)...Especially if you often feel like you got the short end of the stick.
228 pages of belly-aching.......2007-04-01
I read the reviews, and thought - this might be useful. I haven't had a raise or cost of living adjustment in three years - and do not make what I was agreed to by the end of thie first year. When I have asked my boss just to cover some expenses - I get to write a letter to the compensation committee (my boss and my other boss). Yeah - I'm intimidated.
This book focuses only on this real estate broker complaining about not getting his commisions paid to him and the manuvers he did to get them. Don't bother with the book - here is his advice: Get all agreements in writing and feel blessed if you get what is in the agreement, bring a lawyer with you (fly him in your private jet like the author does) and use expensive suits and brochures to show how important you are. I finished the book just to see if there was an easter egg at the end - the joke was on me. The only advice I get take from the book is that I should have gotten it in writting, and should had an attorney come to my job interview. What I thought I was getting was strategies to keep from being cowed and how to move people to my point of view. What I got was a self rightious egoman, compaining how the world undervalued his work while he attached ugly labels to every buyer and seller he worked with.
Skip this book unless you are hateful and sell real estate.
What a practical and usefull gem of a book! .......2006-11-01
Finally someone showed us a little reality. The jungle is full of little power games, that one always has to be prepared for. I loved this book, and think of theories often in my own life. I simply reverse it on these idiots, then succeed untouched, while everyone else has no clue that they are being intimidated.
Stop being intimidated!.......2006-09-05
Good book especially for anyone in business. Learn to be conscious of when and if you are being intimidated and how to handle each situation.

Customer Reviews:
Focus not clear from description.......2007-09-13
Purchased as a gift for my wife, and she reports the focus is a bit more on stay at home moms than working moms. Not a complaint, just an observation.
Giving me a heads up.......2007-07-24
After reading through the other reviews on this book, I had to chime in to say that I think they are ALL right. This book IS a sanity saver for moms of twins who need to know that someone has gone through what they are going through. This book IS NOT a parenting handbook. Elizabeth is not a doctor or child development specialist, nor does she claim to be. If you are looking for specific instructions on how to raise your multiple children, you should look elsewhere (and good luck finding it!).
For me, this book was exactly what I was looking for. At this point, I don't want more "experts" telling me how to raise my kids. Reading this book makes me feel like I am talking to a friend who is telling me what life was like with her twins and the problems she ran into. The book has given me a heads up to problems that I might be facing in the future, and when I do encounter a particularly perplexing problem with my boys, I know I can look in this book to get someone else's perspective. The book is funny, an easy read, and highly recommended. This is one of those books that I WON'T pass my copy on to other mothers' of twins - it is too valuable to me, so they will just have to get their own!
Ready or Not...There We Go!.......2007-05-15
This book was so filled with insignificant stories that I wondered if there was any worthwhile information at all. Unfortunately, there was not. I read the first book by Elizabeth Lyons and loved it. Do not waste your money on the second book.
Not the end all be all of toddler books....................2007-05-07
I was looking for a book that would help with solutions for my toddler twins' behavior and did not find that in this book. It is an okay read, though it seems like the author was trying much too hard to be Vicky Iovine (author of the "Girlfriends..." series) and even mentioned that she was trying to be the Vicky Iovine for multiple moms. Well, she missed her mark, if you ask me. Spend your money on other toddler behavior books.
Definite read for any parent of multiples........2007-04-11
I found this book to be hilariously funny at times and so poignantly true. As a mother of toddler twins as well, I must say this is definitely a book to have on hand when you feel as though your twins are driving you nuts. It makes you realize that there are plenty of other parents of multiples going thru the same thing. The author writes with such an honest and great sense of humor, you can't but help to feel as though you know EXACTLY what she's going through- well because you are.

Book Description
Selling is the second oldest profession, often confused with the first.
The notion of selling carries a lot of baggage. As it has developed, sales has often become a fear-based relationship. Customers are afraid that they will be "sold" a bill of goods, or that a salesperson will talk them into something that doesn't help them succeed.
On the other hand, salespeople fear they won't make the sale. If they "lose" enough sales, they won't make quota, and they won't personally succeed. In their quest to "close the deal," even some of the world's largest, quota-crazed organizations have, at times, developed a reputation for salespeople who are illusive, ignorant, and arrogant.
Buyers don't trust sellers. Because they aren't trusted, sellers have to guess, and often guess wrong. Buyers prove themselves right and create higher hurdles. And so it goes, with neither client nor consultant achieving success.
Helping Clients Succeed is fundamental to the success of any business. This program teaches you to become totally client-focused, break down the barriers of dysfunctional business development, and find rewarding, productive business relationships. With honesty, clarity, and authenticity, Mahan Khalsa cuts through the nonsense and focuses on getting results and helping clients succeed.
Customer Reviews:
Service professional's handbook.......2007-09-03
Don't start your own service business without reading this book. Mahan's insights into common consulting problems and how to address them is amazing. This is the second time I have started my own consulting practice and this time, I am armed with much better information on how to sell, bill, and propose jobs. I keep rereading the book so I can absorb all of the great information. It is easy to read and understand.
Good Sales Book.......2007-05-20
"Selling is the second oldest profession, often confused with the first" is the quote on the back of the book. True, many see sales as prostitution, but this book helps show how it is really elevated.
The book has great information on being client focused. The author does not miss anything, and every sales person will benefit from reading this book. I do have to warn the reader that is is a bit like a "text book", and not an easy read. However, it is worth it once you get through the whole thing, you will have a better appreciation for selling correctly.
A Welcome Reference.......2007-04-26
The intention of this review isn't to rehash all the reviews you see before you -- there are many detailed ones below and above that can give you some good details. I am hoping to shed some light on the reason I believe we have some who LOVE this book, and some who found it disappointing.
I will confess that I purchased this book because I had to: my consulting firm (the biggest of the Big 3) made this a required reading. I ordered it from Amazon and read it over the course of four short flights.
I loved this book. There is a lot of good common sense in here that is needs to be shared -- for some it's not news (and hence why maybe it didn't get a high rating from everyone), but unless we incorporate it into our thinking then we will continually be faced with either guessing what the client wants, or business development expenses that simply can't be justified.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone at a manager level or above in professional services. Absolutely.
Academic Sales at best and not for me ..........2007-02-21
I am sure many people love this book but man it is academia at its best if that's what you are looking for. Charts and graphs and decision matrix and everything but something real in my opinion. I see the world a little different than most but after thirty years in corporate America with Fortune 50's this is the last thing they need is more encouragment in the BS - but then that's just me. Obviously with the rating that is out here most dont agree so I'm still swimming upstream. I happen to have just read (see my review) The Best Damn Sales Book Ever and then this and go read it if you want to be a great sales person.
A Real Approach to Sales.......2007-01-16
I was introduced to this book, "Let's Get Real or Let's Not Play", about 5 years ago and it fundamentally changed the way I approach Strategic/Relationship based sales. If your role in your company is more "transactional sales" this book may be overkill. However, if you are looking for a sustainable and transferable methodology for Strategic/Relationship based sales - this book provides a solid platform that should help to enable marketplace success for you and your team.

Virtually everyone in business today must be adept at sales, whether they're hawking products or services to outside customers or peddling ideas to those within their own firms. Consultants and sales trainers Michael St. Lawrence and Steve Johnson have developed a seven-point program called "Outsell" that identifies and defines the specific practices that set a successful sales professional apart from everyone else. In If You're Not Out Selling, You're Being Outsold, they outline those essential traits and explain how readers in many different fields can use them to achieve their individual goals.
Book Description
"If You're Not Out Selling, You're Being Outsold is more than a 'how-to-sell' book. St. Lawrence and Johnson have approached the art of selling from a witty, entertaining, and inspirational view. The authors candidly recognize what ingredients are required for reaching success, and they have blueprinted a constructive approach that can apply to anyone, whether they are contemplating entering sales, or have made sales their career."âNicholas D. Wolkonsky Director of Sales, High Volume Division, Western Region, ADT Security Services, Inc.
"If You're Not Out Selling, You're Being Outsold is an inspiring book written by two professionals who actually do sell. I found the principles and techniques easy to follow and implement. I am buying copies of this book for all my sales managers."âRobert Coakley Divisional Director of Sales, Alamo Rent A Car, Inc.

Customer Reviews:
Get pumped up and recharged with this book.......2007-10-07
This book is all about attitude and motivation. Don't look for any 'on the street' strategies or sales methodologies here. The book isn't 'deep' but rather is high energy and motivational, kind of like Tony Robbins applied to selling. It applies many of Jack Welch's ideas of "Winning" directly to sales. If you need to be pumped up and recharged this is a great book to read.
This book also offers wisdom in the area of having a sales career. If you aren't enthusiastic, can't maintain high energy, and don't realize that getting the job done ultimately falls to you then perhaps sales isn't for you. The title says it all: you're either selling or being outsold. Stop blaming price, competition and the world for loosing deals. If it was easy they wouldn't need salespeople in the first place.
This book is about the attitudes and work needed to become a sales champion: that we need to hunker down and overcome. As the author says we have one life and one boss: ourselves.
Excellent!.......2007-10-01
Read this a few years ago, and re-read it this week. Some excellent points on taking control of your destiny, and becoming more successful!
Wrong title - Right Life Guide.......2005-04-17
This book highlights the OUTSELL guide to having a successful life. Great stories that are relevant to each topic. Also the authors ask you to stop reading and start acting on their ideas. Very effective guide for those just entering the workforce to throse who are burnt out from it (though if you have read the book, they would be disappointed that there are actually burnt out employees).
Was looking to read the book for sales and received so much more. Another great thing about this book is how positive the authors are.
Most will be inspired by the content.
Slightly misleading title.......2003-10-22
More of a motivational/inspirational book than a "how-to" on selling, so I was a bit disappointed simply because the title can be misleading, depending upon how you read it. The information here is great, however, if you're looking for a cheerleading "rah-rah" type book. Personally, I was interested in more of the nut's and bolts of selling and business than in personal achievement, so I wasn't as happy with this book as I would have been had it filled the reason I bought it.
That being said, I'm still giving it a four star rating, because the information here is solid and I'd recommend it to someone starting out or as a gift to a graduate or that type of thing. If you're already grinding out the day to day stuff, you either know that you need goals and that you should stay in shape and get adequate sleep and smile when you shake hands, etc; or you don't. If you don't, this book probably won't cause you to change habits, in fact, you won't bother reading it in the first place.
That's probably the biggest problem with this type of book, those that really need it will never read it. The used copy I bought was personally signed by the authors. I wonder if the salesperson that originally bought it ever read it. Probably not, or it'd still by on her shelf...
A personal favorite.......1999-11-05
This is ostensibly a sales book, but it is one of the best all-around success/ motivation books I've ever read! I can say for certain that reading this book (and I've read it a number of times) has really helped me in so many ways. I just started my own recruiting firm about a month ago (after four years doing the same for someone else), and I keep this book in my office. I make it a point to read a page or two every morning...it really gets me going! The sections entitled "One Life, One Boss" and "Under Construction" are especially good. My only complaint is that the authors didn't do an audiobook or come out with another book yet.

Customer Reviews:
Paradoxically fluffy and profound.......2003-05-18
I think this, aside from Keirsey's, "Please Understand Me II," is probably the most useful book I've found in understanding the overarching theory and subtheories of Jungian-Briggsian personality theory. This slim volume manages to convey a number of different sub-theories of how preferences interact, from the conflicts between the Perceiving and Judging functions, to temperament. Sometimes these models can seem to conflict with each other, however, this seems to flesh out the theory more than a simple one-perspective guide ever could.
It does all of this in an oddly sketchy, yet very iNtuitive way: for each type, the profile is just a series of phrases that describe the dominant and auxiliary functions. And yet, these same sparse phrases manage to trigger lines of thought and association, that can lead to a larger understanding of just what each preference means, and how to understand their interaction in each of the sixteen types. I think, in fact, it is this exact lack of detail, that assists one in understanding personality typing in a more profound way, one that almost defies expression in words.
There is some wonderful advice (quick, and to the point) on dealing with inferior function eruptions for each type, as well as symptoms of these grip experiences (if you're interested in this aspect, supplement with Naomi Quenk's wonderful book, "Was That Really Me?" for a more in-depth look at inferior functions), so that you can diagnose yourself quickly, and find ways to correct your imbalance. There are also some wonderful suggestions on how to communicate with other types, and show them the sort of respect they most appreciate receiving. And the authors find some wonderful real-life examples in illustrating the preferences, and how they express themselves in people (I'm particularly fond of the illustration of Sensing and iNtuition).
What is unfortunate about this book is that the tone can become a bit heavy-handed, and a little too intellectually fluffy at the same time. Admonitions litter the 200 or so pages quite frequently, warning people that "personality type can be used to gain power unethically, so don't do it!" I think, in some ways, this diminishes some of the power of this book in assisting you to understand Jung's theory.
However, I think this book serves as a wonderful iNtuitive guide to understanding the whole of personality typing, in ways that most other books can't. Sometimes paradox and conflicting information can help you to understand theory far better than the a completely coherent presentation can. I don't recommend this book for Sensing types looking to learn more, but for an iNtuitive, especially an NTP or NFP, this is probably one of the best out there!

A Mixed Bag for MBTI-philes.......2001-03-08
As a layman fascinated with all things MBTI, I picked up this book with eagerness, hoping it might give deeper insights into what other books and Websites discussed, or tread new ground. I was somewhat disappointed.
The authors DO start with some fairly clear, insightful examples and definitions of the MBTI categories, including a wonderful story about an E father and an I son. However, they soon veer from clarity and insight into what I can only call high-level "mush" -- paragraph upon paragraph of needless exposition and feel-good truisms. As noted in another review, Pearman and Albritton's prose is an inconsistent mix of clear, focused text and fluffy, platitude-filled philosophy on having appreciation and understanding for those different from you. While I do appreciate their emphasis -- not stereotyping others and working hard not to just understand them in an academic way, the writing is simply too "lite" and jarring with the text that is specifically MBTI-centered. When they remain on-topic about MBTI and how types interact, the book is good (though not anything drastically different/deeper than other books in the marketplace).
They do offer some very good insights into what the different types value, especially in regards to communications. This is where the book is most valuable -- as a beginning point for understanding HOW and WHY you communicate the way do, and ways to bridge differences with others. However, their many charts tend to get a bit numbing after a while, and some don't do a very good job of show clearer delineation between the 16 types. And for whatever reason, the authors completely ignore Keirsey's distinction between character and temperament; using it could have helped them carry their thesis farther and with more punch.
Worth reading -- or at least skimming -- if you really enjoy MBTI-related material, but for those new to MBTI or looking for more practical, user-friendly texts, I recommend looking into Keirsey's or Kroeger's works.
Great Addition to Jung and Myers-Briggs.......2000-02-08
I find this book to be intellectually rewarding. I have studied Character Typing alot and in college it is my major. This book helps you really understand the many facets of type and how they interact. Thanks
Spotty book on type--both brilliant and confusing.......1999-11-05
Pearman and Albritton are both type experts who offer many personal anecdotes in the use of type. However, their explanations of type concepts at times are very confusing and convoluted. This book can be very difficult to read as a result. It tries to cover too much without giving a solid basis; it is more of an advanced text. The style of writing gets ponderous at points, while at other times is very clear. More consistency would be helpful. The title is very clever and the best part about it.
This book explains everything.......1999-08-15
Instead of just telling you that the MBTI exists and providing unsubstantiated examples, this book explains the theories behind type classification, giving you the background necessary to make justifications about the role it should play in your life. Rather than encouraging the use of type theory to put people in categories, "I'm Not Crazy..." provides the opporunity for you to broaden your understanding of the motivations behind the thoughts and actions of those that are close to you.

Book Description
Most people think talent is genetically determined. Either you can sing or you can't. You get calculus or it's beyond you. You have what it takes to succeed -- or you don't.
The truth about human performance is far more encouraging, says Dr. Bob Rotella in Life Is Not a Game of Perfect. Dr. Rotella, the bestselling author of Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence, believes that talent, as conventionally defined and measured, plays a secondary role in determining one's fate. Far more important is real talent, a combination of character, attitude, and devotion, which makes greatness possible. And the good news is that anyone can develop real talent.
As always, Dr. Bob Rotella speaks from experience. He has made a career of helping people chase and catch their dreams. His authority as a sports psychologist is well known. Golfers from Tom Kite to David Duval to Pat Bradley have relied on him to help them break through to triumphs on the PGA Tour. But Bob Rotella's practice extends beyond the sports world. He is a consultant on performance enhancement to leading businesses such as Merrill Lynch, General Electric, and PepsiCo. He has worked with successful people in businesses ranging from law to entertainment.
From hundreds of clients and countless students, Dr. Bob Rotella has learned what works. In Life Is Not a Game of Perfect, he shares what he has learned and what he teaches his clients. Real talent, he explains, is "brilliance of a different sort." It is the nerve to choose a career doing something you love or the ability to learn to love what you do. It is courage, persistence, and determination. It is the ability to handle failure and honor commitments.
Whether you think so or not, real talent is within your grasp. In Life Is Not a Game of Perfect, Dr. Bob Rotella will help you make it a decisive element in your life. He can show you how to identify and cultivate the qualities that lead to success, prosperity, and happiness.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting look at what talent is all about!.......2006-08-31
Enjoyed listening to LIFE IS NOT A GAME OF PERFECT by Dr. Bob
Rotella, written and read by the author . . . he is a sports psychologist
who believes talent, as it is usually defined, only plays a secondary
role in determining our fate . . . what's more important is something
he coins as "real talent," a combination of character, attitude and
devotion that makes greatness possible.
Best of all, Rotella contends that anybody can develop such real
talent--and he gives some ideas for doing so in this book.
One key is to choose a career doing something you love or
develop the ability to love what you do.
In addition, he shares such other valuable tidbits as the
following:
* People who are successful surround themselves with people
who support their dream.
* Half an hour or so is enough time to discuss what happened
at work. After that, it is up to you to make sure your spouse enjoys
the evening.
* People with real talent compete primarily amongst themselves. Their
quest is to see how good they can get.
* Don't waist your enthusiasm or passion for a company that won't
appreciate it. But if you're a manager, you must appreciate what
people can do for you and your organization.
Okay. Not great........2006-08-27
Okay. Not great. Nice feel good book, but not much in terms of practical application of psychology.
A terrific book.......2000-07-20
This book is about making the best of your abilities, whether you're a graduate of an Ivy League school or Podunk State University. I wish I'd read this book when I was in my teens.
I'll be buying copies for young people that can use this to develop "real talent." I consider it a near-perfect graduation present.
As an aside, I could not disagree more with the earlier review that complained about overachieving and getting burned out. I didn't consider Rotella's approach to be a burnout one at all. If you've found what you love to do, then becoming really good at it is not a recipe for burnout, but rather satisfaction. It sounds like the sour reviewer burned himself oout at something he didn't really love, or couldn't learn to love.
This stuff really works!.......2000-07-06
As tough as it is to imagine, Bob Rotella's teachings on life are just as effective as his now-famous teachings on golf. This book is a good, quick read, but its impact will be felt on you long after, IF you take to heart the lessons imparted and integrate them into your life. Just as he's lowered many a handicap, Doc's lessons on the importance of free will are key to understanding the essence of "real talent"; it's not about being a workaholic, thank God...
Golf he probably knows..........1999-12-12
But this book is somewhat scatterbrained. About 60% is correct, 20% is so-so and 20% is a recipe for disaster. When he is focused on "how to do better than the next person in a competetion" his advice is of the type that will help you do better. But the essence is "work harder than the next guy". Ok, do that. Then the next guy does the same. Eventually, one of you is working 22 hour days and the other drops from an ulcer or heart attack. (Been there, done that)
Some of his basic ideas are correct, mainly that free will determines many things in life, many more than innate talent. He does identify some good role models and others who are poor role models. However, he tends to wonder off into topics where he has little or no expertise (a good editor could have done wonders here...reducing the book by 30-40% would have added 1 or 2 stars to the rating).
Anyway, for those who are chronic underachievers, the book may be of some value. For those who have gone the overachiever route and seen the toll it takes, well you would probably do like I did and put the book down about halfway to 2/3 through and go sound the alarm.
One thing that is not surprising, this book is listed as "very popular at Merrill Lynch". He is very complimentary of one particular Merrill VP workaholic in the Washington DC area.

Book Description
Generously dispensing advice, insider tips, and recommendations for which she usually commands tidy sums, Madeline Stanionis, President and Creative Director of Donordigital, reveals precisely what you need to do, step by step, to raise substantial money with email.
And while it's not as simple as sending hastily written emails every week or month, neither is it unduly complicated or time-consuming.
At heart, raising thousands of dollars with email is all about building your list, using timing to your advantage, crafting a series of coherent messages, presenting your email in a visually appealing way, and carefully observing your returns for clues that can guide your future efforts.
That's it really. And any organization following Stanionis' trenchant advice will see immediate results.
Further, there's plenty of material in the book to customize and adapt, as Stanionis offers a wealth of sample emails from diverse organizations.
And taking it a step further, in the Resources section of the book, the author shows you how to identify just the help you might need (a "messaging vendor" who can send your emails, for example).
Other books talk about "Internet fundraising," which usually encompasses e-commerce strategies such as online shopping malls and auctions. That's all well and good, but many of us want to know one simple thing ¬¬- how can we raise more money with email? And do it now?
Raising Thousands (if Not Tens of Thousands) of Dollars with Email puts that question to rest.
Customer Reviews:
This book is one of the best investments a nonprofit fundraiser can make.......2006-05-27
Whether your nonprofit has dived headlong into email fundraising or is still getting its feet wet, this little book should be in the pool with you.
Written by a fundraising pioneer who has helped nonprofits of all sizes build really strong email programs, really fast (including The Humane Society of the United States, where I work), the book focuses on results. What's the best way to get high-performing email names? What's a good subject line? Is there a "best time" to send emails? What are the key metrics to look at when evaluating how your emails are doing?
Stanionis writes like she talks -- in a fresh, entertaining, and very direct way. She's peppered the book with screen shots of emails from many organizations to illustrate why a series of emails will outperform a single appeal, or how being creative and "speaking from the heart" can drive results, or what an integrated online-offline communications strategy can do to boost membership renewals.
Best of all, you learn all this in about the time it would take you to read an email -- at least, one that doesn't honor Stanionis' advice to keep your copy "simple and short." I'm exaggerating, of course, but just a little bit: This book, so chock full of practical advice, really is mercifully brief. So you can read it during lunch and then, that afternoon, get right to the task of raising thousands of dollars with email.
Finally A Book That I Can Use!.......2006-05-24
"Finally! - A book that takes online fundraisers through the uncertainty of measuring their results and efforts. Raising awareness and money on the web requires attention and resources. Madeline shares her valuable experience and observations in her 'mercifully brief guide'. Real life examples of how organizations use the web to raise dollars online." - Nicci Noble, President - Association of Fundraising Professionals Golden Gate Chapter
Step-by-step, can't fail instructions.......2006-03-23
I've done on-line fundraising for a non-profit for 4 years and I can tell you, if you do what Stanionis says, it'll work for you.
But pay attention. There is a clear path that you need to walk, but at each step you need to make decisions about what will be the best approach for your organization. Stanionis identifies these, gives examples, and stresses their importance. If you skip this extra level of thought, you'll still see results. But if you want real returns, you have to put some energy into it.
I've learned this the hard way, and I'm still learning it. There's something to be said for getting in, getting your feet wet, and treading water until you're really ready to make online fundraising a higher priority in your organization. However, as the field matures, and we learn more about what works and what doesn't, you run the risk that your efforts will look amateurish next to those of other organizations. In addition, if you don't pay attention to the results of your efforts, and don't identify things that don't work with your audience, you run the risk of alienating the very folks you're trying to cultivate. Finally, internet time moves w-a-y faster than most non-profits are equipped to run, and if you're trying tomorrow with techniques that worked yesterday, your audience may be unreceptive.
With that in mind, I look forward to annual updates from Stanionis on "the current state of the art."
Undeniably the best book ever written about online fundraising.......2006-03-15
The publication of this new book about email fundraising by Madeline Stanionis should be welcome news for nonprofits of all sizes that are trying to harness the Internet to grow their lists, engage constituents and raise money.
The book is written for and about nonprofits though it will be of interest to a wider range of institutions interested in online fundraising such as universities, hospitals, faith-based groups, and political campaigns.
There are several things about this book that make it a standout among recent efforts to cover this topic.
First, it deals unabashedly with what was once the most controversial aspect of online fundraising, namely email appeals. As recently as a few years ago, email fundraising appeals were seen as a type of nonprofit spam, even when supporters and list subscribers had opted in to receive communications. Several pioneering organizations have turned this on its head, and Madeline chronicles the experiences of nonprofits such as Human Rights Campaign, Humane Society of the United States, and Earthjustice, who have used passion, good writing, creative design and opportune timing to conduct successful financial appeals from supporters via email.
Second, Madeline writes as an insider about many email fundraising campaigns that she has personally worked on. Madeline is the President of Donordigital, one of the leading firms that helps U.S. charities raise money online and mobilize constituents for progressive causes. Considering her day job, she really gives away the store in this book. The book is filled with specific nonprofit examples, real-world case studies, email and Website screen shots, strategy ideas, analytical techniques, and other professional insights.
Unlike previous books that were edited compilations of articles from experts in the field, Madeline's book has a cohesive and linear narrative that leaves the reader with a clear roadmap to translate her insights into action.
The one critique that I will permit myself is that all the examples in this book are from multi-million dollar nonprofits with communications staff. To Madeline's credit, she acknowledges this point repeatedly, and goes out of her way in the narrative to offer advice to smaller organizations on more limited budgets.
Third, and most importantly, Madeline offers truly useful material on raising money online, built around real-world examples and screen shots to help illustrate her points.
The chapter entitled "It's all about the list," discusses how much online fundraising is really a numbers game, and covers five different strategies for growing an organization's list. The chapter entitled "It's all about the timing," brings the numbers game into the real world. "If you take no other lesson from this book, remember this one," writes Madeline. "To be successful with email fundraising, you must send the right message to the right person at the right time." With the backdrop of September 11, the Asian tsunami and the Katrina hurricane, Madeline reinforces how important timing is when appealing for funds. Other chapters cover email subject lines, how to get through the clutter of supporter's inboxes, good writing, how to craft email fundraising campaigns, how to coordinate email appeal with direct mail and telemarketing, and how to mine email messaging data. At 100 pages, there's no wasted space, and you'll wonder how she packed it all in.
Finally, the best thing about this book is how easy it is to read. This is not a technical book, it is not boring. It is filled with Madeline's verve and an infectious attitude that says, "here's how we've raised money online for charities across the country."
After you've read Madeline's book, you'll be convinced that you can do it too. What are you waiting for?
Finally -- a real how-to on online fundraising!.......2006-03-15
Madeline Stanionis' book delivers on its promise: a short, to-the-point, unpretentious, useful and FUN roadmap for online fundraisers.
Online fundraising has been the subject of endless hype, magical thinking, and "sage wisdom" from authors who have never raised a nickel. Stanionis is the real deal -- a pioneer in the field, has the scars to prove it, and speaks from hard-won experience.
Buy it.

I was wondering about the status of my order. I actually received the book today. The book is in excellent condition. The written desription matches the quality of the product precisely.
Fine Combination of Information and How To.......2001-08-17
As interested in diversity management as I am, I find much of the written material a bit dry and academic. Perhaps writers compensate for the strong feelings that this work brings up by trying to create some sense of distance. In any case, there is a real lack of simple, down to earth texts that are both effective and easy to assimilate. "Voices of Diversity" is the exception to all of this. As the subtitle indicates, the material in the book is based on the content of interviews and discussions with many individuals, and the vitality of their expression permeates the entire work.
The book starts out with some generic introductory material and then starts to go through the interview findings in a straightforward, group by group fashion. There are seperate chapters on African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, recent immigrants, workers with disabilities, younger and older workers, gays and lesbians, women, and white men. Two groups that were left out, which I feel should have been included are Jewish and Arab-American which are often, mistakenly lumped together with white male. Nor is much attention paid to religious or socio-economic diversity.
The chapters themselves start out with general discussion. They then go on to introduce the statements made by interviewees and discuss the stories behind them. Then several scenarios of workplace situations are introduced. After each scenario sections discuss what went wrong and what might have been done differently. I found this material very useful. Getting some insight into how the affected people felt and what they thought is tremendously useful in getting to the source of the real problem. The material on what should have been done provides good examples of simple, considerate and respectful behavior which could be the basis for finding common ground and resolving issues.
The book dates from 1994, but is still quite timely in 2001. Renee Blank and Sandra Slipp have a crisp, clear writing style that makes for easy reading. Not only is the book good reference material, but it would be a fine teaching tool for a discussion group. I would recommend "Voices of Diversity" for everyone's diversity reading list.
Down-to-earth Manual.. Extremely well written.......1999-08-20
I am reading this book for a leadership program and have found a jewel. I am thoroughly enjoying the real-life examples of discrimination experienced by the various demographic groups. The book is written in layman's language, and without being blunt, its examples and how-to instructions are clear to the reader. I strongly suggest this to managers or staff members willing to learn more about diversity and how it fits into the workplace.
