Book Description

Ten Poems to Set You Free inspires you to claim the life that is truly yours. In today’s world it is deceptively easy to lose sight of our direction and the things that matter and give us joy. How quickly the days can slip by, the years all gone, and we, at the end of our lives, mourning the life we dreamed of but never lived. These ten poems, and Roger Housden’s reflections on them, urge us to stand once and for all, and now, in the heart of our own life.

This volume brings together the voices of Thomas Merton, David Whyte, the Basque poet Miguel de Unamuno, Anna Swir from Poland, Stanley Kunitz, the Greek poet C. P. Cavafy, and Jane Hirshfield, as well as three of Housden’s favorites, Rumi, Mary Oliver, and Naomi Shihab Nye. His luminous essays on the poems show us how to integrate the poets’ truth into our own lives.

Roger Housden’s love of poetry and life leaps from every page—so much so that his readers feel they have found a guide and mentor through the extraordinary Ten Poems series. He has opened the eyes and hearts of many, not just to the power of poetry, but to the truth and beauty of the life of the soul. What more can one ask?

4 out of 5 stars "While the soul after all, is only a window...".......2005-11-19

This intimate volume features a selection of ten poems, a guide to redeeming the spiritual hearts of our own lives. Through the voices of David Whyte, Jane Hirschfield, Miguel de Unamuno, Rumi, Thomas Merton, Jane Oliver and more, Housden offers his own reflections on the interpretation of these poems in chapters immediately following each work. For those who need a guide to navigate the phrases of some of the world's great poets, the author illustrates each example with contemporary application, text and subtext, the poet's words reflecting the meaning for individual lives. Moreover, Housden delves into the other writings of the chosen poets, discussing the themes of their work and why these particular poems are definitive, that we may "integrate the poet's truths into our own lives".

Following David Whyte's "Self-Portrait", Housden's "Look in the Mirror" suggests that Whyte's poem is a personal wake-up call. Like most of his writing, Whyte "champions the truth of the soul over the clamor of the social personality". Miguel de Unamuno's "Throw Yourself Like a Seed" precedes the author's chapter titled "Recover Your Spirit". The poet, who died shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, firmly believed that "at times to be silent is to lie". An enemy of Franco and his fascism, the poet spoke to the great themes of the human spirit, a call to courage and integrity, even against the most disheartening odds. The author lifts Unamuno's words, his incredible bravery at a time of great turmoil, and brings them to the fertile ground of our more modern concerns, the small decisions that move us away from our finest selves and the need for personal commitment.

Many of these works are familiar, certainly Rumi, Merton and Mary Oliver, but each has a powerful message on the evolution of the spirit. Combining the fluidity of chosen poems and his own considered comments, the author calls us to attend to personal potential, the daily opportunities for growth and the evolution of the soul that is a by-product of self-reflection. Not everyone wants, or needs, a guide through these works, but for those who are overwhelmed and cannot apply them in an individual context, Housden's Ten Poems to Set You Free is a first step into a rewarding future, where personality, sense of purpose and soul are fully integrated: "We are able to be the one we do not know. This is the greatest freedom available to us as human beings." Luan Gaines/ 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Poems to Set You Free.......2004-01-29

This compilation of poems with commentary by the author is stirring. I take this volume to work to remind me to hold onto my soul; it serves as a defense against the pummeling of the world. This book needs to be read slowly and thoughtfully, allowing time to digest the deep meanings. David Whyte's poem in particular captures the essence of what it means to be an individual with a soul. Outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICANT BOOK.......2004-01-26

If you allow it, the sheer beauty of these ten poems will inspire you toward your own unique life and free you from the clutter of the everyday mind. The author's commentaries are as profound as the selected poems themselves.Get this book, read it-no,live it , and allow its poetry to enrich your soul!

3 out of 5 stars Its okay.......2004-01-10

The book is good. The author, itself, seems just a bit pompous which gets in the way at times. Worth reading anyway!

      Book Description

Many analyses of time series data involve multiple, related variables.  Modeling Multiple Time Series presents many specification choices and special challenges.  This book reviews the main competing approaches to modeling multiple time series: simultaneous equations, ARIMA, error correction models, and vector autoregression.  The text focuses on vector autoregression (VAR) models as a generalization of the other approaches mentioned.  Specification, estimation, and inference using these models is discussed.  The authors also review arguments for and against using multi-equation time series models. Two complete, worked examples show how VAR models can be employed. An appendix discusses software that can be used for multiple time series models and software code for replicating the examples is available.

      5 out of 5 stars MyShelf.com Book Review.......2003-01-19

Have you ever picked up a book and felt it was written especially with you in mind? This is the exact feeling I experienced in reading Mary D. Esselman and Elizabeth Ash Velez's Kiss Off: Poems to Set You Free. These ladies masterfully crafted a small book into a mini doctor's manual where I was able to look up what
ailed me: broken heart, messed-up family, elusive career- and receive perfect poems to treat my pain.

By reading this book, I rediscovered my true self and true direction. The strength and inspiration of this book captures the true essence of life. I feel this book is the stepping-stone a person needs to reach the top of their world. Once you read it, you will find that you keep it close at hand to refer to often when you need a shot of happiness and strength. This book will guide you through those difficult times when life decides to throw you a curve.

      5 out of 5 stars They're Back-k-k-k.......2003-01-11

Who are these funny women who collect such greaat poems and then explain them to the pedestrian world? They should have their own talk show or perhaps tour in stand-up. I ordered this book on-line with some fear that it would not be as witty and wise as the first volume -- The Hell with Love. It is more of the same but much more appealing to those for whom love is a given in their lives. Highly enjoyable. We're passing it around the day spa and adding it as a key reference text for our ongoing discussions about the relationships that work and, especially, the one's that don't. I love Kiss Off.

5 out of 5 stars Don't kiss this one off........2003-01-11

What a wonderful collection of new and classic poems! This volume is a great companion to "The Hell with Love;" In fact, I like it better. Some of the poems here are saucy(Catholics beware); some are sweet. All lend themselves to the authors' insightful gaze into the human condition. This is a book to share and talk about -- even for those for whom poetry is still an unknown adventure. I recommend it be read along side the first volume, and can't wait for the next offering of these two wonderful writers.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry is for Everyone.......2003-01-11

I bought this book expecting to be disappointed; no sequel, I thought, could live up to the wonderfully funny and moving first offering by these women, "The Hell with Love." But the suprise was on me. "Kiss Off" is truly a better collection, warm and funny, with classic verse on one page and contemporary on the next.
This anthology is also a testament to the enduring gift of poetry through the ages, as well as its relevance to everyday lives led by everyday people. Thank you, authors, for bringing poetry once again to pedestrian lovers of literature like me. We are taking it up in our book club next month, knowing it will spark great discussions and bring new insights about our lives, our loved ones and our world. Amazaon patrons, Give it as a gift to your best friends, but first buy a copy for yourself.

"I suppose I should tell you about the house.... The house, along with the lake, the forest, and Coventry, are all in Andy Gage's head, or what would have been Andy Gage's head if he had lived. Andy Gage was horn in 1965 and murdered not long after by his stepfather ... It was no ordinary murder.. though the torture and abuse that killed him were real, Andy Gage's death wasn't. Only his soul actually died, and when it died, it broke in pieces. Then the pieces became souls in their own right, coinheritors of Andy Gage's life. . . . "

From the author of the cult classic Fool on the Hill comes a strange and moving story of self-discovery. Andy Gage was "born" just two years ago, called into being to serve as the public face of a multiple personality. While Andy deals with the outside world, more than a hundred other souls share an imaginary house inside Andy's head, struggling to maintain an orderly co-existence: Aaron, the father figure, who makes the rules; Adam, the mischievous teenager, who breaks them; Jake, the frightened little boy; Aunt Sam, the artist; Seferis, the defender; and Gideon, the dark soul, who wants to get rid of Andy and the others and run things on his own.

Andrew's new coworker, Penny Driver, is also a multiple personality -- a fact that Penny is only partially aware of. When several of Penny's other souls ask Andy for help, Andy reluctantly agrees, setting in motion a chain of events that threatens to destroy the stability of the house. Now Andy and Penny must work together to uncover a terrible secret that Andy has been keeping from himself....

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic but grim.......2007-06-20

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was sad, which made it difficult to read at times, but I liked it quite a bit. Also the local color of Seattle (I used to live there) was quite fun to reminisce through. While in Sewer, Gas, and Electric, Ruff made me laugh constantly, I was on the verge of tears a few times in this one. I don't believe people can actually have multiple personalities. Psychiatrists are divided on this, although I'm not a psychiatrist. But I still think it's a fascinating thing to read about in a novel. Although this book isn't fantasy, Matt Ruff is a fantasy writer, and I think it takes one to pull this idea off as well as he does in Set This House in Order.

5 out of 5 stars Great from the first chapeter........2007-06-10

This is one of the few five stars I've given. I loved this book from the get-go. It is the character development, not plot that rules this novel. You can't help but love the main characters -- two MPD victims whose myriad of personalities all have relationships with each other. Fascinating, enjoying, and just plain good!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a viewpoint we can relate to........2007-05-23

Don't get me wrong - as a novel, this isn't the best book I've ever read. It's clear to me, at least, that Ruff's main purpose here is not to spin us through plot twists but to give us a portrayal of how life can be for a multiple. In fact, the sudden plot turn near the end feels somewhat contrived, as if he wrote it at the last minute out of a sudden fear that the main characters' lives and the interplay between them wasn't interesting enough.

Plot and craft weaknesses aside, though, this is one of the best books I've ever read about multiplicity. I can't possibly express how tiresome it is to read story after story of how "harrowing" and "horrifying" it is to be multiple, what a dreadful condition it is, what a nightmare all multiples' lives must certainly be, since we are, after all, "shattered," "broken," "destroyed" - pick an Adjective of Dread and I can guarantee our lives have been labeled with it. If we aren't written as cringing, manipulative victims of a terrible past, then we're murderers and serial killers With A Difference - and protests to the contrary go largely unheard in the vast, craggy face of the "conventional wisdom" that permeates the genre.

So hooray for Matt Ruff, who did extensive interviews and research among actual multiples who don't fit the stereotype pushed down society's throat - people who actually like being the way they are, regardless of how they got there.

So, what it comes down to is this: as fiction, the book's a decent read, unnecessary plot excitement aside. As a decently accurate alternative to the rest of the multiplicity-related schlock out there, it's one of the most progressive and refreshing books on the subject - fiction or nonfiction - that I've ever had the fortune to find.

5 out of 5 stars Great for fans of Chuck Pahalniuk.......2007-03-26

Ruff seems to have that same twisted veiw of the world with the added bonus of being a better writer. This follows the intersecting lives of two people with DID (disassociative identity disorder), otherwise known as multiple personality disorder. Every other section is written from the others (and their other personality's) point of view. If you have the option, I would suggest reading the first one or two chapters at a book store to guage whether or not you would be truly interested. Personaly, I was hooked after the first two paragraphs. This after having sat on my book shelf for more than a year--I'm glad I finally picked it up.

One warning, I read Ruff's Sewer, Gas and Electric trilogy and loved them--if you have read them also, know that Set This House in Order is not similar in the least.

One of the best books I've read this year.

5 out of 5 stars General thoughts on Matt Ruff.......2007-03-11

I can't add much to the other reviews, other than to say Matt Ruff is my favorite fiction writer. The term genius is bandied about far too often these days, but Matt Ruff is definitely a genius when it comes to writing.

Following up their wonderful jazz poetry anthology, editors Sascha Feinstein and Yusuf Komunyakaa deliver the goods again. Derek Walcott, June Jordan, and Gwendolyn Brooks all weigh in with fine poems, but my favorite this go-round is Rita Dove's "Canary," which includes these lines: "Billie Holiday's burned voice / had as many shadows as lights, / a mournful candelabra against a sleek piano, / the gardenia her signature under that ruined face." These images tell a lot of the story of jazz as an art form. Life is painful, but music is solace, catharsis, and transcendence. So is poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of Interest.......2006-02-03

This is one MASSIVE, but highly rewarding anthology. There is much to be curious about in here; from Colombus's first-hand hypothesis of a pear-shaped world, to the charmingly underrated poetry of Edward Taylor, to Edgar Allen Poe's essay on the process of composing The Raven; most anyone, with an interest in history and literature, will find themselves satisfied. Understandably dry, but comprehensive, it never lingers too long on any one person or period. The concise introductions for each section offer just enough meat to appreciate the context of what is to come.

I saved a lot of money and the delivery was fast--so I can't complain. The book was not in as good of condition as I thought but it was not a big deal. Thank you!

3 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and exhausting.......2004-06-24

This anthology includes darn near everything you can think of. Though the works of major authors (say for instance Cooper) are sometimes given short shrift in favor of the "marginalized" voices of obscure writers (Frances Sargent Lock Osgood, to cite only one example), there is an abundance of worthwhile material for classroom study in its 3000-plus pages of fine print.
My complaint is that in the service of being inclusive, the editors have constructed such a painfully heavy and dense text that it will be a chore to read or to take anywhere. As a teacher I want to encourage wide reading of American literature, but I don't want to burden them with a book that is so reader-unfriendly that they'll bristle every time they have to crack open this hulking giant.

            5 out of 5 stars A Fine American Anthology.......2004-05-17

It was 1994 and I was in my second semester since returning to college at the age of 30. At the time, I was unsure as to whether I should major in English to study History instead.

I decided to take an American literature course that Spring of 1994. The Heath Anthology was the assigned text. In considering this book ten years later, I feel that one of the benefits of such a text is that it provides a framework for more learning. The book contains excerpts of various works such as the autobiographies of Benjamin Franklin and Harriet Ann Jacobs. If one is interested in reading more, the bookstore, library or yes, Amazon.com can be searched in order to obtain the complete work as well as other material by the same author.

The Heath Anthology also has complete works including Frederick Douglass' autobiography and fiction of Washington Irving and Edgar Allan Poe. Poetry, letters and songs are more of what lies in this quite large (but worth it) tome.

Despite the physical weight of the book, I carried it with me to my full-time job possibly every day and I no doubt read it during countless lunch hours. I can't say that I enjoyed all of the material - Thoreau in particular bored me, although I should open the book and give him another try now that I'm older and perhaps more patient. I enjoyed Douglass, Jacobs, Stowe, the Native American poetry, Franklin, Bradstreet, Whitman, Poe and Irving among others. Perhaps when I graduate next year, I can revisit them all again.

What I enjoyed about the American literature class that I took, of which this book was a major part, was that I got a sense of the historical events connected to the literature, which propelled me to pursue the study of history.

This study covers the world outlook for collar seals, cup seals, flange seals, single-lip nonsymmetrical seals, u-cups, v-rings, v-ring sets, and other molded single-component and multiple-component lip-type flexible seals across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
