Book Description
"Creswell's
Research Design is an accessible and useful book that stimulates students through walk through experiences, use of exercises, and production of actual writing samples. It is a book that models the types of issues that best suit different approaches and allows students to understand when to use mixed methods. Furthermore, its focus on theory and paradigms is done in a way that helps students decode their meaning."
--MARTHA MONTERO-SIEBURTH,
University of Massachusetts, Boston
"One of the most formidable challenges of research design is stating your purpose. Creswell's approach takes the guesswork out of the process."
--STEVE GUERRIERO,
Organization & Management, Antioch New England Graduate School
The
Second Edition of the bestselling
Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches offers a unique comparison of three key approaches to inquiry. This comparison begins with preliminary consideration of knowledge claims for all three approaches, a review of the literature, and reflections about the importance of writing and ethics in scholarly inquiry. The book also addresses the key elements of the process of research: writing an introduction; stating a purpose for the study; identifying research questions and hypotheses; using theory; defining, delimiting and stating the significance of the study; and advancing methods and procedures for data collection and analysis.
Key Features:
- Provides a clear presentation of how to implement a mixed methods design in your proposal or plan as well as show how to implement qualitative and quantitative approaches
- Presents the ethical issues that may arise in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies
- Offers extensive writing tips to help get your research plan started in the right direction
- Contains the latest developments in qualitative inquiryâincluding advocacy, participatory, and emancipatory approaches
This book is ideal for readers who seek assistance in designing a full research study or planning a proposal for a scholarly journal article, dissertation or thesis. The book is an invaluable reference on the basics of research design as well as an effective text for graduate courses in Research Methods, Research Design, and related topics. The book serves a broad audience of social and human scientists in fields of marketing, management, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, K-12 education, higher and post-secondary education, nursing, health sciences, urban studies, and family research.

Research Design by John W. Creswell.......2007-09-19
John W. Creswell's Research Design is an excellent resource for graduate students as well as doctoral students. In addition to addressing qualitative and quantitative approaches separately, it presents mixed methods designs from both practical and scientific perspectives. I coach many doctoral students working on their dissertations and this book is ideal for them because Dr. Creswell makes his points clearly and follows them with dozens of excellent examples. Each one is relevant and appropriate.
Excellent for writing a dissertation!.......2007-07-15
This book takes you through step by step on how to write a dissertation. He gives practical examples and breaks it down so that it is easy to follow.
Research Student.......2007-05-12
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in doing research. The book details the necessary steps for quantitative, qualitative and mixed reserach design. Each chapter has clear examples and easy to follow steps in the research methods. As a doctoral student with the University of Phoenix I found the material in this book very useful in directing me towards the process to follow in my dissertation method design. I highly recommended this book.
Concise.......2007-02-16
John Creswell's book is a concise overview of how to do research design. It is precise in the examples cited and there is no "fluff" to the writing. I would recommend the book to any undergraduate or graduate student who needs a quick process book on how to write a research paper.

Book Description
This new edition of the best-selling
Case Study Research has been carefully revised, updated, and expanded while retaining virtually all of the features and coverage of the
Second Edition. Robert Yin's comprehensive presentation covers all aspects of the case study method--from problem definition, design, and data collection, to data analysis and composition and reporting. Yin also traces the uses and importance of case studies to a wide range of disciplines, from sociology, psychology and history to management, planning, social work, and education.
New to the Third Edition:
- Additional examples of case study research
- Discussions of developments in related methods, including randomized field trials and computer-assisted coding techniques
- Added coverage of the strengths of multiple-case studies, case study screening, and the case study as a part of larger multi-method studies
- Five major analytic techniques, including the use of logic models to guide analysis
This edition also includes references to examples of actual case studies in the companion volume
Applications of Case Study Research, Second Edition (Sage, 2003).
Customer Reviews:
Not reception........2007-06-08
I have not received this book. At the same time, I ordered another book, which I received around May 24. I would like to know if there is a problem with the shipment or if I should wait more days to receive the book. I do not know who can help me.
Case Study Research - authoritative work.......2007-03-15
I needed to determine if case study research was for me. I'm in the process of selecting my dissertation methodology. If you only read one work regarding case study research this should be it. Yin is probably cited more frequently than any other author in the field. This work really covers the waterfront and can serve as a guidebook to one wishing to engage in case study research.
Not so wonderful as everybody told.......2007-01-10
I have read the book and it is a formal structured discourse about how to do business cases.
For academic researchers who have never been in a company, it can be helpful. But I have found it a little bit incomplete for those researchers who work in the arena, who have real contact with the companies.
Any way, another link between the academic world and the business world
Mandatory reading for using case studies in research.......2006-06-01
Case studies are very powerful yet often abused way of conducting research. Its often abused because the researcher or student does not know what constitutes good case study research.
Yin's book is a unique combination of academically sound process and techniques that are presented in a way that non-academics can read and understand.
Yin makes the use of case studies and examples in more than 30 boxes that clearly illustrate the concepts and their application.
This book is mandatory for anyone looking to conduct and use case studies to prove and make their point.
Excellent work on case study methodology.......2005-08-03
This book is perhaps the prime book for those conducting case studies for qualitative research in the social sciences. People have developed PhD methodology entirely based on the contents of this book. The third edition contains updated material and up-to-date citations and case study examples.
I would recommend this very highly to anyone using case studies in graduate-level social science research.

Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0534250920 |
Book Description
Written by a renowned psychologist Roger E. Kirk of Baylor University, this classic text provides the graduate student in experimental design with detailed coverage of the designs and techniques with the greatest potential use in behavioral research. Kirk's book is known for its emphasis on the logical rather than the mathematical basis of experimental design; for its in-depth exploration of the relationship between analysis of variance and regression analysis; for its introduction of the concept of building block designs; and for its comprehensive scope that describes all of the ANOVA experimental designs that are potentially useful in the behavioral sciences and education.
Customer Reviews:
Simply a classic.......2003-05-07
This text is a great purchase for any student who will be designing and performing experiments as part of his or her own research. For example, a Ph.D. student in marketing who is studying consumer behavior should read this book. As a matter of fact, it would be a great "prep" book to read before showing up to a Ph.D. program (again, only if the research program will involve performing experiments).
It's expensive, it must be good, right?.......2000-04-03
I have used this book as a graduate student doing social science research. The editorial reviewers got it right; Kirk emphasizes logical explanation, although computational equations are presented in tandem. The book is so expensive because it's so thick and thorough. Everything's here. You won't have to buy a bunch of other books. Just about everything to do with ANOVA and modeling is in here. A good resource.

Classic Prinicples.......2002-12-28
This book is a must for anyone wishing to understand classic prinicples of design. It gives details unavailable in many standard works. I had an earlier edition while in university and when I lost it after a move, was delighted to be able to find another copy of this valuable resource. It was like Christmas to have it once again in my possession.

As an instructor of Interior Design, I cannot praise this book enough....My students as well as fellow instructors find it an invaluable tool, not only in teaching beginning level courses, but also as a great reference manual after the student graduates....Several of us still have well-worn copies in our offices...Buy this book, you won't be dissapointed!

A Very Historical Overview of Interiors.......2001-01-25
I found this book to be loaded with information. The author did an especially good job of incorporating the political, economic, and social context into the discussion of period styles. My main complaint about this book, however, was the complex writing style. It seemed to jump around a lot in attempt to include a basic overview of everything. This became VERY confusing at times. I feel it would be most helpful to someone who already has a solid background in the history of interior/furniture design periods. There was a lot of information about specific arts and crafts of each period (ie. metalwork, ceramics, woodwork).

There's certainly no shortage of software design methods: most demand total allegiance, and many claim to be the only true way to delivering useful and maintainable software systems in a timely manner. Contextual Design describes another worthwhile software engineering method, one that places the user (or customer) at the forefront of the software design process from beginning to end. This method seems to be a particularly worthwhile addition to the literature.
Contextual Design begins with contextual inquiry, where software developers interview users and attempt to understand the way they work. Such "customer empathy" is central to the Contextual Design process and a total understanding of "work" within organizations is the mantra here. The book describes how, later in the process, software developers step back from the user data and do an "affinity," which is an overall analysis of hundreds (or even thousands) of individual facts. Contextual Design then explains the additional steps required to build systems using this method, including building models for flow, sequence, and artifacts, and establishing the cultural and the physical environments for a system. After getting an overview, developers consolidate these initial models, get more user input, and then design user interfaces.
This book, written in a clear, informal style without excessive jargon, reads very much like a book on business motivation. Various practitioners of Contextual Design offer short testimonials on the software design method.
Book Description
This book introduces a customer-centered approach to business by showing how data gathered from people while they work can drive the definition of a product or process while supporting the needs of teams and their organizations. This is a practical, hands-on guide for anyone trying to design systems that reflect the way customers want to do their work. The authors developed Contextual Design, the method discussed here, through their work with teams struggling to design products and internal systems. In this book, you'll find the underlying principles of the method and how to apply them to different problems, constraints, and organizational situations.
Contextual Design enables you to
+ gather detailed data about how people work and use systems
+ develop a coherent picture of a whole customer population
+ generate systems designs from a knowledge of customer work
+ diagram a set of existing systems, showing their relationships, inconsistencies, redundancies, and omissions
Customer Reviews:
In how many ways can you say it..........2007-04-27
If you've got a memory like a gold fish this might be a great book. For others this book is likely to be repetative to the extreme. Half of the pages could easily be cut out. The same message gets repeated over and over again. Many of the ideas are great but.. for many people out there time is a limiting factor, thats my largest issue with both the book and the method in general.
Techniques requirement.......2004-05-13
This book provided a method to gather requirement efficiently but the rest of the method should be revised.
Great book, right price.......2002-02-14
Beyer & Holtzblatt have done an excellent job describing the process of contextual design. I'm currently implementing a new company-wide business process, in conjunction with co-workers, and thought it would simply be a good idea to both refresh my memory, gather ideas, and form concepts that would be helpful in the organizational design process. This book has undoubtedly served the purposes I've wanted it to. Again, excellent book - worth the buy.
Useless.......2001-11-27
This is quite a useless book about an otherwise interesting subject. The writers give redundancy and repetition new meaning as they repeat themselves by saying the same thing over and over innumerable ways.
That said, the examples scattered throughout the text are the most interesting part.
Hard to Penetrate.......2001-08-22
I have read a lot of glowing reviews about this book but I have found that, while it is good, I think it is too dense to be great. It is a very difficult read. The writing style is very heavy. I would love a one-pager of the ideas in this book. My sense is that it would read "Watch Users." There are better books on the subject. I like "The Inmates are Running the Asylum."

Customer Reviews:
Amazing book for information design.......2007-07-15
I am the type of person who dabbles in all kinds of design, and I think of the ideal designer as one who knows a little about everything. Designers design ways of output, whether it be lemon juice from a lemon or ways to fit all vital components in a laptop in the most efficient way. This book is about the output of information from our multidimensional world to the flat paper space, and he does it brilliantly.
It's even worth mentioning the book itself as a good piece of design. All the images are vivid, the pages feel crisp and durable, even the color of the pages I bet was an attention of detail (it's slightly offwhite, but in an extremely good way). It's like good ol' fashioned timeless design.
He covers the subject wide and far, dips into everything from visual illusions to hardcore information displays. Sometimes you wonder where the heck he gets all these wonderful images, they span from the stoneage till today and show the vast variety of ways to display information, both simple and complex.
It is a beautiful book and an absolute must for people interested in the design of information. Actually, I'd say it's a must for anyone interested in information at all, be it for powerpoint or for magazine layout. This will be one of the most intelligent books on my shelf.
An Obsolete Glance At A Classic Problem.......2007-06-28
This is a short book, 126 pages. An interesting cursory exploration of the subject. However, it feels like it predates information technology (1990 predates the web by 5 years), and seems to have more in common with how to communicate elements of a hand-drawn map atlas if you were living in the 1700s than it has with using Adobe Illustrator to convey an idea for the web. I bought this book to see if it would help me as a web developer, and instead when it arrived I realized I got a weird coffee table book that feels like it was written in the 1960s, at the latest, to summarize that you can use different icons or pictographs of small size to communicate important ideas without words. (Sorry, I already gave away the story of the book.)
I know this review isn't going to get very popular marks, but, put simply, this book is probably good for professional or student pure designers, but it's useless for me. I honestly don't think the book targets web designers, but somebody here reviewed that it was "great" for web designers, so because of that remark I bought it. Sorry, but I don't see the applicability. But then, I only skimmed over the book before I put it back on Amazon Marketplace.
While one should normally never judge a book by its cover, in this case I think you should.
one of three or four.......2007-01-10
this is part of a series from tufte. he uses examples to describe techniques of visualization. if you do presentations to others or write reports that present complex data, several of his books should be in your library.
A wonderful book!.......2006-11-04
No designer should be without this book. I especially enjoy the historical accounts of information design. Of course hind sight is 20/20 so his redesigns seem obvious from our perspective.
An outstanding addition to my library.......2006-06-23
An outstanding addition to my library, Edward systematically explores the presentation of data showing the value of data rich content when it is properly displayed. After reading half the book, I couldn't sit through a presentation without coming up with at least 3 ways to improve it. The illustrations in the book are beautifully rendered and cover a diverse set of subject matter each as interesting as the next. The only topic concerning this book that I struggled with is whether or not to mark it up. In the end, as I do with all of my books I intend to refer back to, I did.

Book Description
This book explores the philosophical underpinnings, history and key elements of five qualitative inquiry traditions: biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study. John W Creswell relates research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry and compares each of the research strategies for theoretical frameworks, writing introduction to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing the narrative, and employing standards of quality and verifying results. Five journal articles in the appendix offer fascinating reading as well as examples of the five different qualitative designs.
Customer Reviews:
basic foundation for beginning research students.......2007-10-15
This book is helpful in explaining the different approaches to qualitative methods. The comparison charts in the book helps you to compare and contrast against the methods and helps in choosing a method to undertake your research study.
introductory survey text.......2007-07-03
This book would be best used as an introduction to qualitative research methods. It provides a broad overview of five qualitative strategies; however, if you are thinking of conducting qualitative research, this text is insufficient.
Look for the new edition.......2007-06-07
We need this book for our masters in educational psych. I understand there is now a 2nd edition, 2007 we should be asking for. I'll order this one I guess directly from school.
Hope this helps.

A very good introduction to qualitative methods.......2006-12-13
Creswell's book effectively covers basic theoretical and practical issues regarding biographies, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case studies. I studied this book as a graduate student and now use parts of it in my research methods class. He avoids much of the qualitative jargon that so many other qualitative writers can't seem to avoid, thus making this book accessible to students who are not familiar with qualitative approaches. I especially like the convenient tables that summarize key points and the real-life articles in the appendix, one for each approach.
There is plenty of information about qualitative research that is not included in the book. For instance, having personally spent a great deal of time reading and applying phenomenology, I can honestly say that there is much more to this technique (theoretically and practically) than what is discussed in the book. For this reason I do not believe that people can conduct expert qualitative research after reading just Creswell - I am sure that he would agree. Other resources are needed. But everyone has to begin somewhere, and Creswell's book is an excellent start.
I would like to see an expanded version of this book; one that discusses each qualitative tradition in greater detail.
Dave
After reading some of the example articles at the back of the book I am of the opinion that these articles are the weak spot for this book. In particular, the ethnography article is a very long and old paper (circa 1972?) about school principals that is more a case study than an ethnography. I think that Creswell could have selected a more recent paper that was a true ethnographic study. Also, the Grounded Theory paper on sexual victimization seems too depressing. The Phenomenological paper on the nurse-patient caring relationship is pretty good, however.

Customer Reviews:
Sumptuous and inspiring.......2000-12-22
I received this book for my birthday last year and still enjoy looking at it. In fact, I was getting ready to order it for a friend for the holidays when I saw an earlier review of this book that also mentioned another vacation home book called Second Home, I bought it, too. I highly recommend both books. This is wonderful dream book, as is Second Home. Second Home also includes pointers (throughout the book) on deciding where you might want to have a second home, real estate shopping tips, and ideas on building and decorating, too. Second Home is as inspiring as Family Houses by the Sea, but it offers the bonus of being practical and talking directly to me about what I can do to actually realize my dream of having a weekend house.
One of our favorites.......2000-11-17
We are accumulating a wonderful little stack of books related to second homes as we plan a getaway of our own. This one is a favorite because of its dreamy photography. I also highly recommend SECOND HOME: Finding Your Place In The Fun, which is a new book that mixes dreamy photos of real homes with some helpful tips on finding a location as well as buying, building, remodeling, or decorating a second home. Like Family Houses, Second Home is a larger hardback book. Gorgeous.
Family houses - eclectically by the sea.......2000-10-07
And therein lies the beauty of this book. Yes, some of the homes are older & some are rustic-but there's the sleek & contemporary too. In other words, something for everyone who loves to live by the water (or wishes they did). Buy this book to appreciate the different ways to express loving the natural light & atmosphere in a home that is reflective of the sea. You may not get Decorating Lessons 1-100 - but thats not the point. You can escape thru this book, dream thru it, share it, admire those who have created beautiful spaces in beautiful places - without displaying every obvious "seaside" nic-nac but with much good taste & class. Buy it for those pleasures & of knowing that kind of life does exist & can be lived by those to whom it means the most. To the authors - a beautiful volumn - thank you for seeking these places out & creating an arm chair trip to some incredibly beautiful spots by the water.
A Classic.......2000-09-08
A beautiful book that captures what it feels, smells and looks like to live by the sea. If you want glitzy resort style houses then this book is not for you. The houses shown are not show cases for a glossy magazine but places filled with memories and life. It's my favourite beach house book.
Seaside Fantasies Brought to Life.......2000-06-30
This book was my inspiration for a beach house I just finished completely cosmetically rehabilitating. The book took me all the way through the process by stimulating me with the beautiful visuals of its photos. I would look through it repeatedly, looking one time at flooring, another at windows, and so on, depending on where I was in my rehab process. I can't imagine it not being a superb stimulus for anyone.

Book Description
You think you know about Darwinism and intelligent design, but did you know: *There is no overwhelming evidence for Darwinism; *Intelligent design is based on scientific evidence, not religious belief; *What many public schools teach about Darwinism is based on known falsehoods; *Scientists at major universities believe in intelligent design; *Scientists who question Darwinism are punished --by public institutions using your tax dollars. Battle-hardened veteran with doctorates in biology and theology sets the record straight in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwin and Intelligent Design.
Customer Reviews:
They can believe in Darwinism if they want to, but why do they.......2007-10-12
so forcefully shove their bias down everyone else's throat, and prevent both students and the public from considering any view but theirs?
I loved this book, and like many feel a debt of deep gratitude to Dr. Wells for his truly impressive achievement. Make no mistake, those like Dr. Wells who have exhibited such independence and moral courage in opposing the dishonesty that's inherent in our institutions regarding the teaching of evolution, are exposing themselves to censor, vitriol and hatred.
Evolutionists themselves acknowledge that progress in science and acceptance of evolution are not interdependent. Why are they so zealous in enforcing their dogmatic belief, even to the point of exclusion from consideration, any ideas that they feel are in conflict, no matter how valid, well supported and articulated?...Why?
The force-feeding of evolution on society has as its ultimate goal the rejection of all religious belief, and therefore of morality connected with spiritual consciousness and yearning.
It seems to me that radical Darwinists are attempting to impose their atheistic vision and materialistic values on everyone, to deny humanity access to its spiritual dimension, to convince us that we have no obligation to a search for meaning, that we have no right to a higher fulfillment.
America was founded on the principle of religious freedom, and many have defended this lofty ideal with their lives. The intolerant, militant Darwinists hiding behind the guise of their pseudo-science have gone a long ways in overturning this ideal. They've taken over our institutions of learning, and now control the media. They've aided and abetted the process of opening the floodgates of materialism and moral poison that have flooded over us, resulting in our present state of decadent, degernate rot. The Darwinists are applauding because it proves that we're just beasts. It's what they want.
The index tells it all.......2007-09-20
If you simply look at the index for Intelligent Design, evidence for, you will see listed 1, 4, 8, 198-199. Turn to those pages and you will see the "evidence" is merely the use of the word evidence in a statement like "since intelligent design is based on evidence..."
I've read this cover to cover, and I did find the arguments ID makes against Darwinism's evidence (which have been answered in other books -- flagellum, blood cascade, the eye) but there is no evidence presented for ID beyond that. Wells just says it's based on evidence, that there are experiments and field work being carried out (in secret), but he never gives us more.
It is interesting that Wells states that the evidence for Darwinism --common descent, natural selection, random mutation--is underwhelming. Interesting because his friends and ID colleague Michael Behe writes:
"As I wrote inThe Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism, Darwinism is a multifaceted theory, and to properly evaluate the theory one has to be very careful not to confuse its different aspects. Common descent, natural selection, and random mutation are separate concepts; the first two are well supported, but the power of random mutation is not. " The first two are well-supported. By evidence, one assumes.
This was a truly frustrating book.
Same old rehashed "arguments"..........2007-09-02
Oh, I'm sorry, I thought "politically incorrect" meant "having a charming and irreverent disregard for the political norms of the day when discussing topics that are usually stifled by convention". Apparently it just means "rabid, frothing, conservative pap".
Skeptisim not allowed.......2007-08-30
It is doubtful that there is a more divisive issue in our public schools than the mere thought of explaining our existence in terms other than Darwinism. Regardless of the innumerable holes in the theory any suggestion of other possibilities is anathema.
Intelligent Design the Darwinists say is nothing more than code for God based creation. And of course anything smacking of something greater than us leads secularists to fits of explosive anger.
Evolution means change over time and I don't know many people that have a problem with that. However Mr. Darwin's theory is entirely different. The "theory" holds that... Natural Selection plus Random Mutation equals an ENTIRE NEW SPECIES. And look as they may, over 150-years now, no one has come close to proving that.
My personal problem with Darwin, a problem that is explored deeply in this terrific book, is how those that accept it do so to the exclusion of any other possible explanation. Science has a twin, a virtually conjoined twin, "Skepticism." But Darwinists have rejected sciences twin with the utmost vehemence.
We are not allowed to be skeptics in discussing the origin of life. We must, herd like; accept Darwinism and all its myriad problems. We must have faith that an amateur naturalist that lived 200-years ago, was and continues to be right in all respects regarding the greatest scientific and philosophical question since the beginning of time.
Skepticism is not allowed.
Many of the reviews of this book are being written by people.......2007-08-28
who have not read it.
It is a well written, easy to understand book on an Theory of Darwinism and Intelligent Design.
This book is easy read and will get your brain in gear as you analyize both sides of the story. When, as suggested by the author I took a look at my son's biology book and saw Haeckel's sketches I was convinced.
"To support his case he [Haeckel] began to fake evidence. Charged with fraud by five professors and convicted by a university court at Jena, he agreed that a small percentage of his embryonic drawings were forgeries; he was merely filling in and reconstructing the missing links when the evidence was thin, and he claimed unblushingly that hundreds of the best observers and biologists lie under the same charge."--*Michael Pitman, Adam and Evolution (1984), p. 120.
For that alone it is worth your time.

With Visual Explanations, Edward R. Tufte adds a third volume to his indispensable series on information display. The first, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, which focuses on charts and graphs that display numerical information, virtually defined the field. The second, Envisioning Information, explores similar territory but with an emphasis on maps and cartography. Visual Explanations centers on dynamic data--information that changes over time. (Tufte has described the three books as being about, respectively, "pictures of numbers, pictures of nouns, and pictures of verbs.")
Like its predecessors, Visual Explanations is both intellectually stimulating and beautiful to behold. Tufte, a self-publisher, takes extraordinary pains with design and production. The book ranges through a variety of topics, including the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger (which could have been prevented, Tufte argues, by better information display on the part of the rocket's engineers), magic tricks, a cholera epidemic in 19th-century London, and the principle of using "the smallest effective difference" to display distinctions in data. Throughout, Tufte presents ideas with crystalline clarity and illustrates them in exquisitely rendered samples.
Customer Reviews:
Many good examples of illustrations.......2007-08-20
Many excellent examples on conveying many types of quantitative data across a wide variety of subjects. The only problem is that, to create most of these, one must be a graphic artist. If one needs to convey highly technical quantitative information, especially to layman, this gives the reader a good idea/perspective of how to explain to graphic artists hired along what general lines an illustration should be made.
What a gem - but not your first design book.......2007-02-15
Tufte's series on visualization will surely go down as classics. He's readable, he's right, and he's engaging.
The only thing is, as pretty and as well-founded the book is in certain principles, it's my opinion that... that the average reader doesn't understand design problems enough that this book will present anything new.
Meaning, the book is so intuitive, that, it seems pointless anyone would ever have to write a beautiful book like this -- *UNLESS* you have been stymied over and over again by mudglobs of creative ad hoc-kery and ad-hoc functionality, or, if you have been victimized by the unfunctional sheen of superglossy animated 3-d search engines (data visualizations, etc).
Here's maybe the test -- if the price tag of this book seems excessive, you haven't been slogging through enough terrible textbooks to see what a light and airy gem of fresh... >sigh
< air this book is.
Otherwise - buy the Tufte series all at once, and see if you can't save bucks on the group discount.
Not a text book but a knowledgeable friend.......2005-08-28
Visual Explanations is not a usual book. It is like a knowledgeable friend walking with you through a museum: pointing out good design and bad ideas; linking various domains (graphic design, usability, psychology) together. You learn things slowly, almost by symbiosis. Visual Explanations will be enchanting for people who have the time to read it in that way. It will be frustrating for people looking for a practical guide: This is not a textbook. The book itself is beautifully produced.
Topics covered include: clarity and purpose of information, color scheme choice, and composition of images.
A must-read for anybody with something to tell.......2005-07-25
In this book, an expert of visual explanations uses visual explanations to tell us his ideas how to use visual cues to explain concepts, quantities, timelines etc. Tufte, with his eternal self-confidence and succinct prose gives good examples and shows how a good image can be better; gives bad examples and has no hesitation to call something (even authorities' products) 'ghastly' or 'nightmare'. I think this book is a must for anybody who wants to use visual cues and examples for the ideas they want to convey. That is, everybody, in this time and age of information.
Explaining Quality Visual Information.......2004-09-26
Edward Tufte's book "Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative" is a 157 page exercise in critical thinking. The author discusses and analyzes visual information, pointing out flaws and strengths of various visual depictions. One becomes more aware of visual information and what constitutes ideal pictorial information.
"Visual Explanations" covers the topics of images and quantities, displaying evidence, pictorial instructions and disinformation, the smallest visual effective difference, repetition and change, multiples, and visual confections. Although the book has little to do with charts and graphs, reading the book makes one aware of all visual information and its ideal presentation. Anyone that works with or uses charts, illustrations, and any visual data will probably find this book useful. The book is richly illustrated with examples.
This book would be great for people that use statistics in their work or make presentations. It teaches people to be a critical thinkers concerning visual information and presentation. Even if you do not agree with Tufte, "Visual Explanations" will make you think about things you otherwise might not have.
