A gorgeous book. More usable than the previous edition: physically smaller (still a coffee-table book, but lighter & smaller - binding should hold up now), much more up to date, no more hunting for pictures. Downsides: text refers to color plates but color plates don't refer back to text, and a short bibliography (
<100 cites. It does cite the previous edition and Juniper & Parr, each with over 700 cites, but you'd need those to track references). Compared to Juniper & Parr's Parrots: A Guide to Parrots of the World, it's cheaper, more recent and better for phylogeny; but has less information about each species and doesn't cite references for each species. The larger size allows an elegant layout but makes it a poor field guide.

This is a classic reference book and is an unmissable volume in any bird lover's library. The colour plates are beautiful, and it provides substantial information. All in all a lovely book to have!

Forshaw is an excellant book that shows beautiful color pictures of the Parrots, tells where the Parrots are from with a colored map of the area they are originally from in the wild. Also the book tells in detail the color and size of the Parrots. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in recognizing the different Parrots.

This book has great pictures from several angles of the species covered. It is not extremely thorough, so if you are interested in one species in particular, I would recommend getting a book specifically on that species. Otherwise, it's an excellent reference to have around.

I was long wondering whether to buy this book or not, but it was well worth getting.
The species accounts are incredibly detailed and it must have been hard work to collect all that data.
I have field experience regarding parrots in Eastern Indonesia, and found this book to be amazingly up to date about the status of species occuring there - so I trust it is similarly accurate about parrots in the rest of the world, too!
Not a good guide.......2002-08-13
I own parrots, I have friends who own parrots, and I have a brother who breeds parrots. I feel I can knowledgably say that this is not a good guide to parrots. It is full of mistakes both in the text and in the illustrations. I was very disappointed when I went through this book and, fortunately, I did not buy it but got it through the library. If you want info about this group of birds buy the standard, Forshaw's Parrots of the World, and just realize that the information about ranges and scientific names might be out-of-date but overall this is the better book by far. It deserves no stars.
A Terrific Guide to Parrots!.......2001-04-07
This is got to be one of the best guide books I have ever seen featuring over 350 different species of parrots on our planet. Being the bird lover that I am, and that includes domestic as well as wild birds, I own almost every book out there on birds, and I really love this edition by Tony Juniper & Mike Parr. It should really be called an encyclopedia because there is just so much information in these almost 600 pages. The 88 superb color illustrations of all the species by 5 different artists are so beautiful & true to life. As you already know by reading the editorial & other reviews, this book includes range maps of the species locations, their vocalizations, life expectancies, and much more fascinating information.
Remember, this is not a book about parrots in captivity, its information about birds in the wild. If you don't own a parrot and are thinking about one, this book is a definite help in learning about all the different species that are out there. The more knowledge you have the better it will be when you do decide to pick out that perfect companion parrot for yourself & family. Owning a companion parrot is a lifetime commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly. I know I researched many months before I found the perfect parrot for us. The love you receive in return from your parrot will amaze you. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Highly recommended!
The Encyclopedia for Parrots.......2000-06-13
This is the first book I bought on Parrots and it is the only I would ever need to learn about the different types of Parrots in the world. It contains information and pictures on every type of Parrot from the African Grey to the rare Kakapo. I only wish they had an indication on the price range of each bird on the market for those who breed and sell. I would definitely recommend this book to the serious Parrot collector. A definite must on a Parrot lover's bookshelf and worth every dollar.

The text provides concise information on natural history, a map of each species' range in the wild, its conservation status and other information. I have always wanted to go to the Tahitian islands but have never had the opportunity. Now, after reading "Cocktails in Tahiti", I am planning a trip to Tahiti for next Summer. I originally thought "Cocktails in Tahiti" would give me some good ideas for entertaining, but soon found out it contained many intersting nuggets about the islands and their history. To sum it up, I am packed and ready to go to these beautiful islands.
If you've ever dreamed of a tropical vacation or just need to brighten up your winter, you should read this book.

I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!
Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.
Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.

Such great potential..........2006-12-26
I was very excited when I bought this book. After reading it once, I still found it quite wonderful, but since I`m writing a book of my own (on african greys), I had to check up on some of the "facts" I wanted to use myself. I`m sorry to say that some of the historical facts don`t add up to other, reliable sources. For instance, one painting is dated to 1889, but the painter died in 1883, and according to the book it was the French who invaded The Canary islands in 1402. It was the Spanish... A few other dates are wrong as well. I haven`t found (or searched for) many errors, but this makes me question the rest of the book as well. But if you`re not really "hung up" on historical accuracy, this is a very good book indeed. The facts themselves still hold water, although some dates and such may be wrong.

Massive Monograph of All the World's Parrots........2004-10-07
There have been 7 editions of this landmark work by Joseph Forshaw and William Cooper that I know of, all of which are out of print. Shopping for a copy of "Parrots of the World" on the secondary market can be confusing. The book was originally published in 1973 and had 584 pages. Landsdowne Press was the Australian publisher (ISBN 0701800240), and Doubleday was the US publisher (ISBN 0385056281). In 1977, TFH Publications, with the cooperation of Doubleday, published another edition that is distinguished by not having a dust jacket (ISBN 0876669593). The cover artwork is part of the slick, white cover. Ease of locating and identifying the illustrations was improved. A year later, in 1978, TFH further improved upon the book by expanding the indices. The 1978 edition has the same ISBN and cover art as the 1977 edition, but says "Improved 1978 Edition" on the cover. A "Revised Second Edition" with 616 pages came in 1980 (ISBN 0701806907) from Eastview Editions. A "Revised Third Edition" was published by Avian Publications in 1989 (ISBN 0701828005). The 3rd edition has 672 pages and includes new plates illustrating differences in the plumage of mature and immature birds. Second and third editions were also published in Australia, and perhaps the UK, with different publishers and ISBNs. In 2000, a "Limited Edition", still with 672 pages, was published by Avian books. All of the editions (not including the foreign editions) have different cover art. All have dust jackets except the 1977 and 1978 editions.
I'm reviewing the 1978 edition, with a Double Yellow-Headed Amazon and a Blue-Fronted Amazon on the cover, as that is the one I have right now. The author, Joseph M. Forshaw was an Australian ornithologist specializing in parrots. Illustrator William T. Cooper, was an Australian painter best known for his depictions of birds. The book is organized by Distributions: Pacific, Afro-Asian, and South American, which are further divided into Family, Sub-family, Genus, and Species. Sub-species are found within the listing for the species. This is also how the birds are listed in the table of contents. The book's two indices provide a more efficient method of locating a particular species, however. There is an English Name index and a Scientific Name index. The author has used the common name from the species' nation of origin whenever possible, so some of the names may be unfamiliar. For example, a rose-breasted cockatoo is a "galah", an umbrella cockatoo a "white cockatoo", and what we might call a cherry-headed conure or red-masked parakeet is a "red-masked conure". I find it simplest to use the scientific name index.
The Preface explains how the book is organized. The book's Introduction provides informative explanations of the classification of parrots, their anatomy (including diagrams), and their natural history. Each Distribution is introduced with an explanation of what species lie within that region. Descriptions of the attributes of each Family, Sub-family, and Genus introduce each sub-section of the book. For each species, there is a physical description, distribution (with map), a list of sub-species (with physical descriptions), followed by General Notes, which encompasses just about anything ornithologists have observed and documented about the species, including calls, nesting habits, and a description of its eggs. This edition of "Parrots of the World" was researched primarily in the late 1960s. Some information on the distribution and endangerment of parrot species may be outdated. It is also likely that more and better information has since been amassed for the General Notes sections. Still, there is a great deal of information in "Parrots of the World". It was the first monograph on parrots published in over a century, and it's still overwhelming. Approximately 340 species of parrot, including all extant species, are represented and described. There are 155 full-page illustrations by William Cooper. Most have more than one bird in the picture so that nearly 500 birds, including divergent sub-species, are illustrated. The illustrations are not as detailed as Roger Tory Peterson's, but they are striking and convincing. Parrot lovers will find "Parrots of the World" a pleasure to peruse.
The quintessential parrot reference.......2004-05-11
It's unfortunate that this book is out of print, as it's a parrot fanatic's ultimate reference to parrots in the wild. Beautifully illustrated with full-color plates, it covers every known species of parrot, and some that are sadly extinct since its printing. It provides information on all aspects of psittacines in the wild as far as they are known, from size to range to breeding habits to habitat, but it's really the illustrations that make this book so valuable. If you're at all interested in wild parrots, this book is among the best.

If you are a collector of books on parrots, and simply must have them all, then by all means get this book. Otherwise, beware, this is a large book that does not fit on an average height bookshelf! It also has the look and feel of an older book, compared to some of the many fancy guides that have come out in recent years.

In the summer of 1969, while on his second tour of duty in Vietnam, Paul Morgan was assigned to the Headquarters, Military Assistance Command in Saigon. His duties included briefing General Creighton Abrams and his staff on combat operations throughout Southeast Asia. He also conducted numerous debriefings of soldiers involved in some of the war's most clandestine missions. Like the top-secret incursions into the Parrot's Beak.
The Parrot's Beak is a chunk of Cambodia situated at the end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, less than 35 miles from Saigon. During the war with France, the Viet Minh communist guerrillas built a sophisticated tunnel and cave complex impervious to aerial bombardment and artillery. The complex quartered thousands of soldiers and held tons of supplies and materiel. It was from this deadly labyrinth that the Tet Offensive of 1968 was launched, sending thousands of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese regulars across the border in a failed attempt to capture the South Vietnamese capital. And it was there, in the spring of 1970, where a story of heroism and brutal combat was about to unfold. Though some names, dates, and details have been changed to protect the identity of those involved, the incredible events in The Parrot's Beak actually happened. This account of ground and air operations in Cambodia is riveting. I flew over 300 missions in Vietnam as an A-4 attack pilot and as a forward air controller in an O-1 Bird Dog. Paul Morgan did a masterful job of portraying the relationship between ground and air operations. His grasp of the action from the pilot's viewpoint is flawless.
I've had enough "grunt" training to appreciate his vivid account of the ground action. The action seemed so real that at times I felt my heart rate increasing, seemed bone tired at 0300 or could feel the perspiration in my eyes!
Most veterans will also relate to his respect and sympathy for the enemy combatants he faced.
This book should be required reading for the Army's Ranger school and for all forward air controllers!
Guts, Gore and Guilt.......2001-03-25
No movie I have seen about the Vietnam war comes close to the action, drama and emotion contained in this book. I was on edge the entire time I was reading it to the point I was dreaming about it at night.
I soaked up every detail of the battle set-up, the day-to-day struggle in the field, and the bureaucracy, frustration and hypocrisy the soldiers had to deal with by being involved in a non-declared war. The guts and courage the soldiers (on both sides) displayed in some of the battles described in this book is almost impossible for me to comprehend. All of the action, machismo and old-fashioned fighting is dampened by the descriptions of gore, waste of life and guilt the author so eloquently shares with the reader.
I am fortunate to have never had to see or experience the events described in this book. I am also fortunate to have had the pleasure to meet the author. We are all fortunate that he has taken the time to record his experiences and share the romance and horror of U.S. Operations in Cambodia.
The Hidden Face of War.......2001-03-25
Paul Morgan is the military story teller par excellence. In "The Parrot's Beak" he elicits the full gamut of emotions encountered by the warrior involved in the war that crossed the many borders of Vietnam. There is the feeling of duty, daring, elation and even despondency. We also see all the faces of the true warrior as the soldier on a mission, as a prisoner and as the enemy. He even gives us an insight into another type of warrior, the patrol dog. This part of the story is touching and unique. He was there and it shows in his vivid descriptions and accurate portrayal of military tactics. We get to see the irreverence bred in all wars with ill defined purposes. This is a must read book told by someone who saw the war "as it was".
Action Packed War Drama.......2001-03-02
If your interested in action packed war drama's based on historical fact, you will want to read The Parrot's Beak By Paul Morgan. Paul takes you into the jungles of Cambodia on a secret mission during the Viet Nam war. His storytelling is so captivating that you feel you are there experiencing all the ups and downs of the mission. You will not want to put this "nail biting" novel down. I didn't.

I was privileged to be able to read "The Parrot's Beak" while it was a work in progress. I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The book is a novelization of real people and events, presented in vivid images, and is packed solid with actionm action, and more action. It feel so real that you can smell it, feel it, and hear it - you are there! "The Parrot's Beak" is an intense and exciting novel about operations during the Vietnam War. I also recommend highly Paul's earlier non-fiction effort, "K9 Soldier. I am Robert Kollar, scout dog handler of Rebel M421, 58th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog), 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), Vietnam 1968-1969.
