Customer Reviews:
A good guide from start to finish .......2007-07-24
As a general civil engineer in private practice this book has provided a good overview on the more abstract side of land development including financing, rezoning, and public involvement. All of which, are topics that typical engineers strugle with as it is not the enjoyable aspect of what engineers are trained to do. Nevertheless, these abstract components are just as real as the plans we develop. Of course, the book is excellent for hands on design and calculation support.
Learn a lot.......2007-05-13
As a novice developer, this book put me on the right track without all the confusion and terms I would have never understood. It was simple to understand and after reading it, I felt like I knew a lot more. Very interesting and satisfying. Great reference guide all the way around.
very good all-around reference.......2004-03-01
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.
Difficult to follow!.......2003-12-16
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!
A Must Have Pub.......2002-07-04
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.
ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

Book Description
The control of groundwater is one of the most common and complicated problems encountered on a construction site. The Second Edition explains the physical laws governing groundwater and soils, and provides practical solutions to construction dewatering problems. New chapters on groundwater computer modeling, dealing with industrial wastes and contaminated water, and operating long-term dewatering systems provide the latest information on these important topics.
Customer Reviews:
Hang on it!.......2000-09-27
Ihave been using this book for about five years without a single complain. The book has not only enough theory to deal with probably the 80 or perhaps 90 percent of the typical day-to-day dewaterning problems that we found in our industry, but it also teach you the ways to cope them.
Its a down to earth, user friedly, easy to read book/manual that every Geotech guy should have. The section "PRACTICE", with chapters like "Choosing a Dewatering Method","Well Point Systems" and "Sumps, Drains, and Open Pumping" has helped me to make that right recommendations on several of my projects.
Book Description
Geotechnical Engineering of Dams incorporates the collective experience of the authors each of whom has more than 35 years dams experience. It provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams and the review and assessment of existing dams. The emphasis is on embankment dams, but much of the text, particularly those parts related to geology, can be used for concrete gravity and arch dams. The book aims to give a practical approach on these matters to practising dam engineers and geologists, as well as to give university students an insight into the subject of dam engineering. The theoretical basis upon which design methods have been developed is included so readers develop a proper understanding of the limitations of the methods. All phases of investigation, design and construction are covered from the initial assessment of a damsite and the development and carrying out of a detailed site investigation program, through to the preliminary and detailed design phases and ultimately the construction phase. The assessment of existing dams, including the analysis of risks posed by those dams, is also presented.
Customer Reviews:
COMPREHENSIVE AND MODERN BOOK ON DAM GEOTECHNICS.......2007-01-13
Most of the classical books on dam engineering have been written in the sixties and seventies.
Unfortunately many of the recent books are conference proceedings or just not particularly well written.
This book is an exception and has been for us a pleasant surprise since :
- it is a comprehensive book on the subject
- includes many suggestions and comments coming from the large experience of the authors in the field
- it covers the most modern subjects like recent experiences on concrete face rockfill dam design
- it is well written and full of references and case histories
Even if it might not become the "reference textbook" it is certainly a must for anyone involved in dam designing.
Book Description
One-of-a-kind coverage on the fundamentals of foundation analysis and design
Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations is a significant new resource to the engineering principles used in the analysis and design of both shallow and deep, load-bearing foundations for a variety of building and structural types. Its unique presentation focuses on new developments in computer-aided analysis and soil-structure interaction, including foundations as deformable bodies.
Written by the world's leading foundation engineers, Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations covers everything from soil investigations and loading analysis to major types of foundations and construction methods. It also features:
* Coverage on computer-assisted analytical methods, balanced with standard methods such as site visits and the role of engineering geology
* Methods for computing the capacity and settlement of both shallow and deep foundations
* Field-testing methods and sample case studies, including projects where foundations have failed, supported with analyses of the failure
* CD-ROM containing demonstration versions of analytical geotechnical software from Ensoft, Inc. tailored for use by students in the classroom
Customer Reviews:
A student's perspective.......2006-11-03
I have found this book to be useful for my foundations class. However, I have made a lot of corrections in calculations, axis labeling, and other minor but important information in the text. It seems that some editing needs to take place prior to the next edition of this text. The content is good but minor errors are scattered through the book.
Customer Reviews:
Good combination, yet some errors.......2004-04-29
I study both geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. This book deals much more with the geotechnical aspects as is named. It doesn't contain chemical issues or any microscopic behaviors you may find in some geoenvironmental books such as Yong et al.
I kind of appreciate the authors' hard work to combine a great deal of knowledge concerning the design of landfills. There are 18 chapters, and each of em talks about every possible component of a landfill (CCLs, GCLs, GM, cover, LCS, etc.) and also some important behaviors such as settlement & stability. A chapter about vertical barriers is not available becoz this is the "landfill" book. The book uses mechanical, macroscopic, and "rule of thumb" approaches.
There are some topics missing in this book. I believe. For instance, it assumes that adsorption is not available (retardation factor equal to unity) in the liner system, and this more or less makes your design too conservative. Subsequently, becoz adsorption is neglected, you won't see the topics about batch test and column leaching test in this book. Also, the way to obtain diffusion coefficients of porous media is not presented.
So far I've gone through some chapters and found errors from place to place. Pages 19, 122,158, 162-163, etc. need corrections.
To finish in a positive way, I believe that this book is "a must" for geotechnical engineers working on landfills. If your background is purely environmental, you'd better look for some other books. And if you are a geoenvironmental engineer, the book is one of the good references for your career. But it's not a bible.

Customer Reviews:
A good book for a novice soils engineer.......2001-09-22
Reasonably well rounded book (at a reasonably good price!) illustrating the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Concepts are explained in good detail and solved problems are helpful in promoting understanding. Essentially, a good book to start out your tech library, but too general in nature to be considered for a "reference text". For that, you might rely on books by Terzaghi, Peck, Thornburn, Bowles, Fang, etc.
Great for the PE.......2001-04-23
I took this book in with me for the PE exam and it helped me get about 10 problems right. There are tons of examples and problems with solutions in this book. I regret not taking the geotechnical section of the PE exam.
The Author Responds.......2001-02-12
What divergent opinions !! Naturally I think the book is loaded with practical geotechnical information, including tons of solved problems. Give the book a chance and decide for yourself. Many thanks to my supporters....
Not worth the money!.......2001-02-04
The book is too oriented to domestic US soils, and the aproach is superficial and over-simplified. The amount of useful information is less than 5% of the huge size of the volume. Really a waste of money.
Useful.......1999-10-28
I have examined the book and find it to be an excellent book for learning the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. The author is uptodate and thorough, yet he explains in a very down-to-earth style, by photographs and numerical examples, some very real engineering problems a geotechnical engineer is likely to face in practice.
