Book Description
A comprehensive guide to understanding and practicing Vedic astrology, the art of
jyotish.
â¢Â Teaches beginners how to read and interpret Vedic astrology charts, based on their own birth chart as well as the birth charts of 112 notable people.
⢠Shows how to use Vedic astrology to anticipate upcoming events and direct the cosmic energies of one's life toward a positive future outcome.
⢠Includes CD of Vedic astrology software for readers to create their own charts.
For over 5,000 years the people of India have used jyotish, or Vedic astrology, to anticipate future influences and make major decisions. Now Andrew Bloomfield brings this increasingly popular tool to the West in an easy-to-follow, comprehensive format, providing the reader with everything needed to practice the Indian art of predicting the future.
Vedic astrology was codified by the ancient Maharishis to help people achieve the four basic goals of human existence: kama (desire), artha (wealth), dharma (life purpose), and moksha (spiritual growth). Unlike other forms of astrology, Vedic calculations focus more on the primal, unconscious, driving forces linking our thoughts and actions. How to Practice Vedic Astrology shows how to make accurate predictions on when to expect life's changes concerning one's career, love life, children, or spirituality. The accompanying CD allows the reader to create unlimited numbers of natal charts, while the book includes the charts of 112 notable personalities--from Mother Teresa to Paul Newman--as examples from which to learn chart interpretation.Â
Customer Reviews:
Good very basic book for Beginners.......2005-12-30
This is one of the most basic books on Vedic Astrology around. It is designed for people who just want to dip their toes into the waters of Vedic Astrology.
Even if you know absolutely nothing about astrology, once you have your vedic chart, all you need to do is find where are your planets (grahas) placed on the chart and read most likely interpretations based on the sign and the house they occupy. That is essentially the scope of this book.
To make the points easier to understand, the author provides numerous examples through the charts of several famous people.
You learn a little bit about aspects between planets and transits mainly through the author's intepretation of these sample charts. However, if you want to be able to get more information out of your own chart, you will have to continue your study through other books and resources.
The book contains a demo version of the Parashara Light program. If you are genuinely interested in learning Vedic astrology, this is an exquisite program. Other than just creating charts, it contains text from numerous classic books on Vedic Astrology and it can be very helpful to a genuine student.
I have not installed the demo version since I had the full version of the program, so I don't know what the drawbacks of the demo version are. However, if you are unable to use the demo version and desire to test the waters of Vedic Astrology by exploring your own chart, if you contact me, I will email you your own chart, so you can have fun and discover if you'd like to continue learning. What I can say - I love to help people who have passion for learning new things.
Good book, terrible software.......2004-12-11
I was pleased with the book, which provided a good entry-level tutorial on Vedic astrology. There is scant discussion of the dasas, but a very thorough description of the planets in the houses that comprised most of the book. Several charts are presented to make the point when needed. If you keep your own chart at hand as you read, you'll see how it all fits--and in truth, Vedic astrology is often more accurate than most Western brands!
But the software is another matter altogether. It is a demo of a pretty expensive package and takes up a lot of space on your hard drive for just doing a few charts. If the reader wants to pay $300, a "key" is provided that enables the rest of its features. Most people picking up this book will not likely need or want the behemoth package: beginners may find it all confusing, and professionals won't need many of the features.
Worse, I'm having difficulty uninstalling it: the demo package on the CD offers no uninstall feature. A better option would have been to ship a smaller version equipped only to do the charts, along with a brochure describing what the package can do.
The book, however, is definitely worth the price, especially for beginners. Buy it, and explore this branch of astrology. If you love it as much as I do, pick up other books on the topic and really look into it.
Book Description
An examination of the shadow side of prophecy in human history and our attitudes toward fate and predicting the future
â¢Â  Explores the divinatory techniques and traditions of classical Greece and Rome as compared with ancient China
â¢Â  Contains new information concerning the location of the Greek Oracle of the Dead at Baia
â¢Â  Shows how the latest discoveries in science may validate the system of the I Ching
â¢Â  First U.S. Edition of Netherworld
Many methods for predicting the future, such as tarot, runes, the I Ching, and other divinatory oracles, can be traced back to ancient cultures. In
Oracles of the Dead Robert Temple examines the Greek and Roman traditions and techniques of divination and compares them to those of ancient China. He reveals the real physical location of the "hell" of the ancient Greeks--known in antiquity as the Oracle of the Dead and used for séances intended to contact the spirits of the dead--and provides photographs from his explorations there.
Relating them to the ancient belief in the Oracle of the Dead, Temple examines the various mysteries associated with Delphi and the other oracles of the ancient world and explains how they were used to allow visitors to experience contact with the divine. Furthermore, his examination of the Chinese oracular system shows how the latest developments in science are validating the system of the I Ching.

Let's all go to Hell.......2007-08-10
I've been an admirer of Robert Temple ever since reading THE SIRIUS MYSTERY back in the late 1970s. Unlike Von Daniken or Zechariah Sitchen, Temple's scholarship is impeccable, and his blistering rebuttal of Carl Sagan's pathetic attempt to "explain away" the Sirius material deserves a place in -- dare I hope? -- a 3rd edition of that terrific book.
I've spent more money in the last 30+ years purchasing books that Temple mentioned in the bibliography of THE SIRIUS MYSTERY, just to check and see if he was quoting his sources responsibly, and not just making it all up. No other book has prompted me to buy ever more books than that one!
If you haven't read "THE CRYSTAL SUN" yet, go and read it. It, too, is a magnificent bit of scholarship.
Which brings us to "ORACLES OF THE DEAD". When I first read the blurb about this book -- the notion that the Journeys into the Underworld taken by the epic heroes of "myth" are based on ritual journeys taken by real people into a real place -- I just about had a heart attack. Long before Masons had their little rituals involving "death"-enactments for the purposes of some sort of initiation into a "mystery" the Ancients had sculpted a landscape meant to serve various functions both for the individual suppliant and for the powers-that-be who controlled their societies, both politically and religiously.
The world is poorer for not having become acquainted with the sites Temple discusses, these man-made landscapes of Hades. That "ORACLES OF THE DEAD" isn't being mass-produced and read by the multitudes who devour pot-boilers like "THE DA VINCI CODE" is a travesty. I wouldn't even have known about this book had I not been a fan of Robert Temple's prior work. Lucky for me that I had previously been enthralled by his thought-provoking books, and was easily willing to shell out money for a book that isn't stocked on the shelves at the Barnes & Noble in my home town.
Misleading Title.......2006-08-29
Was VERY disappointed ....reviews and title lead you to think this is a book of 'how to DO ancient oracles' ....when in essence it is a history-being-unraveled-type of book. If you are are a history buff you may like it, but I certainly did not !
Surveys the Greek and Roman traditions and techniques which have carried these methods to modern times.......2006-03-05

The ancient belief in the Oracle of the Dead is considered as Temple examples mysteries associated with Delphi and other world oracles and considers different world oracular systems.
Book Description
Renesch puts forth a vision for historic transformation for all humankind as he pictures a global future full of possibilities--a much "better future" than the one that appears most likely if we rely upon forecasts based on existing trends. Not only that, the author points directly to the business community as the segment of our society that can best lead the rest of the world in such an incredible transition for all humanity.
Customer Reviews:
New HOPE for a Promising Future.......2006-02-02
John Renesch has generously shared his tracing of the path of self-examination of thought and life that many of us long to do. He helps you begin the process yourself, seeing that the need for change that we see in the world today begins with personal change in each of us. He points out that we often stay an arms-length away from really making our personal contribution, looking outside ourselves or waiting for someone else to deliver, before we move into action. Meanwhile, we continue to blame, complain, hide behind our fears or those thrust upon us. He gives a compelling call to action for each of us to answer the call of what he terms our "ultimate responsibility". Inspiring new vision. Great stories. This book gives NEW HOPE for a promising future at a time when we need it most. Great read!
Outstanding.......2003-12-09
John Renesch takes a stand for the greatness of the human being. He sees a better future that is possible but needs to be worked for. He points to the possibility of a more sane and mature world through humanity's embracing its destiny for a more conscious evolution.
This book is neither a complaint about our situation nor a grandiose scheme for changing it. It calls us all to turn old habits -- like being passive and perpetuating the status quo -- into more productive ways of living and working. It gives us many realistic action items that any person, anywhere can take to help build a better future.
"A must for system agents".......2001-01-09
Highly recommended reading for business leaders! Everybody still in possession of a certain degree of open-mindedness and hope for a better future will acknowledge that this book provides more than food for thought. It's a blueprint for action. The French writer, philosopher, and Nobel laureate (literature) Andre Gide (1869-1951) once said: "I do not know whether it will be better when it changes but I know it must be different in order to be good". John's Book helps all of us to shape the system to become good! Peter Sorg Head Group Relations Member of Senior Management Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc., Basel, Switzerland
5 stars for optimism.......2000-12-24
I found this book to be encouraging. There is a way to treat others in a more human way. John makes an excellent case for why and how it can happen. I was downsized 2 times in the last 3 years. The problem I have with corporations is HOW they do the downsizing( ouch!). John's open style of writing allowed me to see what I was holding onto from these past experiences and let go of it...move on. Someone must hold the bright light for others to follow.
Great Road Map!.......2000-12-24
Great tools and ideas for those who feel like helping to improve our present reality and to start building one that works for all. Let's enjoy and use it!
Book Description
Tarot card reading, dream symbolism, astrology, and the reading of body characteristics are explored in depth, as is the use of objects, such as crystals and coffee grounds, significant in their ability to connect humans with another realm of existence. Other avenues into otherworldly experience, such as channeling, the I Ching, meditation, and Wicca are also extensively discussed.
Customer Reviews:
A concise and useful book........2000-08-03
This book explains how to read with the standard playing cardsdeck in a concise way, with no extraneus material.
After a short introduction, the card's meanings are explained a card a page, with an extra page for each suit. The explanations are short and to the point, clear, and very understandable. For some reason, each explanation is accompanied with the card's picture which is scanned in very low resolution and printed in black & white.
In my opinion Astrolog should have either dropped the pictures completely (everybody knows how the cards look, so why reproduce it, especially such a poort reporduction) or at least reproduce the cards in good resolution and with colours.
The last section includes several good spreads, explained well over 34 pages, with a few pages with hints for correct interpretation. The subject of reversed cards is covered as well.
All in all, I find this book to be a good one, but wish Astrolog would not have reproduced the pictures to produce a smaller and just as useful book.

A lot of ground covered, but boring and undecisive.......2002-01-18
The best thing about the book is the title. The author discusses in length some obvious limitations on forecasting which exist simply because we are finite beings. But Rescher's formulation of this quite trivial fact sounds as follows: "the predictive venture of securing rationally warranted foresight into the future therefore faces rather equivocal prospects." (p.245) Now, this quote is representative of Mr. Rescher's heavy academic style.
I completely agree with the Finnish reviewer regarding the lack of depth in any subject and example discussed. Rescher's books on Idealism are much better -- my guess is because he is an Idealist and enjoys writing on the subject. Reading this book however I felt that the author just had to finish writing it as a business duty to his publisher.
Everything about the future, by simple examples.......2000-07-28
Rescher is an internationally known professor of philosophy, not a business guru who earns his living by selling " Predicting the future" -seminars. This is partly good news, partly bad news.
The good news is that this is a serious book. It looks at the fundamental questions about what can be firmly said about the future. Rescher deals with philosophical concepts in epistemology and ontology, and discusses underlying principles at length.
The bad news is that Rescher never discusses any concrete examples at any length; as soon as discussion starts to get interesting, it is time to take a new viewpoint. There are plenty of interesting topics which could have been discussed at more length, weather or the stock market, but one page is maximum Rescher dwells on any one topic. John Casti's book "Searching for certainty" is much better in this respect (but the book is on prediction in science only). Business predictions are much better discussed by Schnaars in "Megamistakes".
Rescher is one the co-inventors of the Delphi-method (with Olaf Helmer and Norman Dalkey) but his discussion of the method is a dissapointment. It is very cursory, and their is a strong pet-theory bias: a 1960 Delphi study about the world in year 2000 includes, among others, predictions such as: -world population 5.1 billion -ocean farming -fusion energy -minerals extracted from oceans -regional weather control -manufacturing in the Moon -men will have landed on Mars -global ballistic transport on Earth -effective anti-missile defence -correction of hereditary defects by molecular engineering
Rescher's analysis is that "the accuracy and utility of that particular study still looks quite respectable".
Rescher has the annoying habit of using overly simplistic examples which diminish the value of his otherwise interesting discussions on fundamental principles (a philosphical educational method ?) e.g. Who will the president of the United States in 2100 ? Will there be more than three letters "e" on the front page of the Wall Street Journal tomorrow ?
Book Description
Values are top-of-mind in business these days and have become especially important in today’s challenging marketing environment. But do you actually understand values—what they are, where they come from, and why they matter? After reading this book, you will.
Because we are entering an era characterized by the most generationally and ethnically diverse consumer groups in American history, it’s never been more important for you to understand what values influence today’s segmented populations and how you can best position your products and services to influence these distinct groups.
Market research over the last few decades has emphasized behavioral-based demographic profiles like Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the Millennials. But The Consistent Consumer says values are much stronger indicators of future consumer buying behavior. The authors will introduce you to five proprietary “Value Populations” that are united not by behaviors, but by their shared history and culture—conditions that set lasting values and, ultimately, the purchasing behaviors for each of these groups. Quite simply, The Consistent Consumer will tell you how to make your business more profitable. You’ll not only find out how organizations like California Closets and the National Basketball Association have used these values-based profiles to increase their marketing impact, but also how you can apply this same system to increase the power of your own marketing efforts and to enhance your bottom line. With The Consistent Consumer as your guide, you’ll understand how to: •Create innovative products and services. •Align your products with consumer values . •Develop strong selling relationships with high-potential customers. •Assess the risk-reward ratio for entering new markets. •Evaluate emerging trends as lucrative marketing opportunities. •And influence customer buying decisions for immediate and lasting profit.

Thinking about clients in a new way........2006-10-18
I found this book to be quite useful. It has changed the way that I think about our clients, and how they make buying decisions. As a techie, it is often difficult for me to step outside my worldview and see these decisions from another point of view. This book motivated me to do so, and to consider the impact of clients' values on the decision-making process; it's been a worthwhile exercise.
Forget generations, think Value Populations!.......2006-09-06
Under the innovative premise that population groups can be better represented by their shared values rather then the traditional view of generations, The Consistent Consumer provides tremendous insight into the value creation events behind each of its defined five "Value Populations", along with valuable examples demonstrating practical approaches to successfully convert this knowledge into true business intelligence. The Consistent Consumer is an excellent resource for anyone looking to better understand and market to specific target population groups. Highly recommended!
Anyone who sells anything to consumers can benefit from this book.......2006-08-21
The Consistent Consumer posits that consumers decide what to purchase according to their own internal value systems. The authors define five "value populations" that have shared histories and values which guide their purchasing decisions. This information can help readers of the book to tailor marketing plans, and future products, to meet the needs of the different value populations. We all want to better understand, and have better relationships with, our customers. The Consistent Consumer is a useful manual to push us in that direction. It's based on a revolutionary premise, well-written and well-executed. I highly recommend that you check it out!
A new paradigm.......2006-07-22
This book has created a dramatic evolution in my understanding of communicating to target audiences. It has given me a better understanding of how to market to - or communicate with - different generations based on core values, not past behaviors. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Whether there is a future to predict is not a question many people care to think about too deeply, though the process of predicting the future has itself a history. We did not always predict from the same assumptions as we do now, or for the same reasons. Today, on the basis of empirical observation and scientific theory, accredited experts and specialists forecast the economy, the social consequences of medical innovation and even what will happen to the universe in billions of years time. In the past soothsayers, priests, oracles and comets foretold the future on the basis of religious ideology and traditional authority. In a remarkable series of thought-provoking essays the authors examine both approaches and their consequences and chart our continuing attempts to see beyond the present.
