Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Helpful and Unique.......2007-03-21
I really enjoyed this book because it gives a very unique perspective of the Millenium Development Goals from the faith perspective. It also gives hands on and realistic steps that we can take to move even closer to each MDG. My only complaint with this book is that it is at times elitist in that it assumes that its audience is middle and upper-middle class Christians. Though this gives the book a clear audience, it excludes many people from its point of view.
Book Description
In an America that increasingly turns its back on the teachings of science, the worlds of religion and medicine have grown disconcertingly close. A majority of Americans now see prayer and other religious activities as a substitute for well-researched methods of curing disease. Many ask, "So, what's the problem with prayer?" By taking a hard look at the scientific evidence. Richard Sloan believes there is no proven curative power to prayer and that the use of it as a medical treatment underminds effective patient care.
In Blind Faith, Sloan exposes the questionable research practicies and unfounded claims made by ethical scientists who manipulate scientific data and research results to support their claim of effective mystical intervention in healing. Sloan begins by looking at how good science works and what it's founded on. He then discusses the faulty methodology employed by those trumpeting the role of prayer in healing and implicates a gullible media in the propogation of bad science. He looks at ethical and clinical concerns of the debate and the ultimate trivialization of religion that results. As the Christian right turns its back on science, medicine, seems to be its next target. Sloan lays bare the faults of these assertions in a book sure to make headlines.
Customer Reviews:
Very Effective Critique.......2007-07-25
This clear and well organized book is aimed at a general audience. Sloan takes aim at the idea that aspects of religious participation (or more vaguely, spirituality) have concrete health benefits. This idea has led some enthusiasts to push for some melding of religion and medical practice. Sloan reviews carefully the actual data claimed to support these assertions. He does so in a clear style, providing basic information about what constitutes convincing data. He shows clearly that the evidence for putative health benefits of religion is quite slender and there is little to justify substantial changes in medical practice. Sloan then turns to a number of other issues, including both practical and theoretical barriers to introducing religious issues into practice. Sloan argues well that any major change in physician-patient relations is likely to impair other aspects of practice because of time constraints and that it is unlikely that medical education can really provide physicians with the requisite knowledge. The theoretical barriers are a series of ethical issues which really constitute some major problems. Unlike some other reviewers, I felt these sections are quite well done. Sloan has a good grasp of the realities and complexities of medical practice. Sloan is, I think, fair to those he criticizes and this book constitutes a very effective critique.
Definitive summary of research.......2007-06-01
This is the definitive book on religion and medicine: they are different and do not mix very well. Most of the research on the effect of religious activity on health has been sloppy, and the results have been negative. Neither going to church nor prayer will guarantee better health or longer life.
Physicians have neither the time, nor the expertise to counsel patients on questions of religion, or meaning, or spirituality. For this there are other experts,-- ministers, priests, chaplains, etc. -- trained in the ministry and theology, as well as in counseling.
This is a very good book. It is especially solid on science and medical research, explaining what conclusions can realistically be drawn and what can not be drawn from the existing research, but also what is possible to research at all.
Enjoyable Read.......2007-03-12
I agree with points made by reviewers below, especially the criticism of Sloan's last two chapters in which he suggests that religion deserves a free pass from scientific inquiry. Christianity, for example, has been proven "false" on many points from the sciences of biology, archaeology, and history. Should archaeologists not try to prove or disprove the sometimes outrageous claims of the Bible followed by billions? Are archaeology and critical history not "science"?
Besides this, I would add one comment. I work as an RN and have met many, many doctors, both young and old. As a whole, physicians are the most irreverent group of people I've ever met! I chuckled even picturing the doctors I know getting "spiritual" with their patients (and, keep in mind, I live in Oklahoma, the Bible Belt if ever there was a place). Nurses and other auxillary staff also tend to be an undevout crowd as well. So, perhaps Sloan is making a proverbial mountain out of a molehill. It's telling that Sloan returns over and over again to the same few doctors in his book -- because, in reality, there is no groundswell towards an "Alliance of Religion and Medicine." There's no need to lose sleep over this issue.
Still, Sloan's work is appreciated because I have heard (and maybe even said in the past) that there is "strong evidence supporting the health benefits of religion." Now, I can no longer say that.
Science and Faith are Simply Not the Same Thing.......2007-02-02
There was a time when the Church decided to take on the science of physics. They decided that the earth was the center of the universe and sentenced Galileo to life under house arrest for saying otherwise. Having lost that battle, it now seems that religion has decided to take on biology and medicine. ==Since our time is a bit more scientific than was Galileo's time, thr arguments from the religious are often framed in the words of science, specifically research papers that purport to show proofs that the religious views are correct.
In this book Dr. Sloan (Professor of Medicine, Columbia) looks at some of the studies that have come out saying things like church goers live longer (perhaps those in the process of dying are too sick to go to church), the power of prayer, the power of crystals and so on. He also laments the lack of understanding about basic scientific principles and views among people who have gone through our educational system. And then there's the 'UN'intelligent design folk who are trying to force the adoption of their religious based ideas into out schools.
With the right wing fanatics in the Muslim world, and the Christian right trying to take over this country, it makes you wonder what's happening to the world.
Religion & Medicine.......2007-01-23
Fast read, non-technical. Good overview on how to evaluate the quality of studies, medical journal reviews, and the process of scientific experimentation. The third section of the book seemed to bog down and become more "opinion-based" rather than fact- or statistically-based.
Book Description
Veteran statesmen George McGovern and Robert Dole here find common cause with theologian and activist Donald Messer in this powerful testimony and appeal to people of faith. They are each convinced we can overcome global hunger now, and their informed, strategic, impassioned thoughts encourage and equip. This book brings together their disparate yet powerful voices behind a shared conviction: that helping the millions who lack basic provision for food has become a religious imperative and human priority.Writing for congregations and individuals of faith, McGovern, Dole, and Messer appeal to the biblical, theological, and ethical foundations of action against hunger.

This book brings together three powerful voices behind a shared conviction: that helping the millions who lack basic provision for food has become a religious imperative and human priority. Writing for congregations and individuals of faith, McGovern, Dole, and Messer appeal to the religious ethical foundations for action against hunger. Informative, inspiring, and filled with practical personal involvement and political commitment to the cause. [..]
A real kick-in-the-church-pew book!.......2005-11-09
In his Foreword, former President Bill Clinton states: Hunger affects 300 million children and really one billion people worldwide, mostly in Asia and Africa. Women and children suffer the most.
Mahatma Gandi said: "To a hungry person God can appear only as a piece of bread." Thus feeding the hungry has been at the heart of the Christian faith as well as other major religions and ethical systems.
The authors work across partisan political lines on what they believe is most important: combating malnutrition and hunger.
McGovern and Dole's interest is feeding children through school lunch programs. A New York Times article said, "If you feed children, they come to school and stay in school and they learn better."
Bread for the World organization reports that 36 million U.S. citizens--over 13 million children--live in homes without enough to eat. How do millions of people go hungry in this 21st Century that produces enough food for every man, woman and child?
Stop Hunger Now organization states: Every day 30,000 people die of starvation worldwide; that is 1 person every 3 seconds.
Within Jewish and Christian traditions, 8 overlapping themes exist:
1. The reminder that God has created a world rich in abundance and meant for all people (1 Corinthians 10:26).
2. Hunger theme appears often as a reminder of the precariousness of life and of God's gift of food. (Genesis 12:1k 37-50)
3. Feeding the hungry is both a moral obligation and a religious requirement. (Isiah 58.7)
4. Sharing is the essence of the spiritual life. (Matthew 14:13-21)
5. Failure to feed the hungry is deemed a sin. (Job 22:7)
6. Both Jewish and Christian rituals emphasize the importance of sharing food. (1 Corinthians 11:28-32)
7. Abolishing hunger on earth has always been a religious imperative. (Revelations 7:16-17)
8. Christians of all theological persuasions believe that the cry of the hungry is actually the voice of God. (Matthew 25:40)
Each chapter ends with very search-the-soul questions that get up and personal--and may hurt or embarrass us. The book gives research and the congregational usage guides and important links.
Armchair Interviews says: This is a real kick-in-the-church-pew book.
Book Description
In The Clash of Orthodoxies: Law, Religion, and Morality in Crisis, Robert George tackles the issues at the heart of the contemporary conflict of worldviews. Secular liberals typically suppose that their positions on morally charged issues of public policy are the fruit of pure reason, while those of their morally conservative opponents reflect an irrational religious faith. George shows that this supposition is wrong on both counts. Challenging liberalism's claim to represent the triumph of reason, George argues that on controversial issues like abortion, euthanasia, same-sex unions, civil rights and liberties, and the place of religion in public life, traditional Judaeo-Christian beliefs are rationally superior to secular liberal alternatives. The Clash of Orthodoxies will shock liberals out of an unwarranted complacency and provide powerful ammunition for embattled defenders of traditional morality.
Customer Reviews:
A commendable, albeit futile, exercise of reason.......2007-02-12
Since when reason is futile? Since you deal with unreasonable men. Botton-line, folks, this eternal debate -which Mr. George wants to call Judeo-Christian Orthodoxy vs Secularist Orthodoxy- is a cul-de-sac. And mainly because we don't want to admit that we are not fighting over Reason, but over Power: whoever has the Power wins. Whoever has the means of Agit-pro has the Reason on his side. Liberals want to impose their evil atheology on the grounds of denying Judeo-Christians any rational basis. Mr. George excellently proves them wrong in a very intellectual book.
So this book is a commendable effort, and I truly support Mr. George's point of view, but only because I already had the Light. This book is a collection of essays, in a debate form. The issues that separate Liberals from Christians/Muslims/most religious faiths are debated. Mr. George argues that the secular ideology wants to establish itself as the nation's public philosophy. Yes, it does. Mr. George argues that to prevent that from happening we should oppose them with a good rational force (in my own words). Alas, what a futile fight!
At this point in life both sides have pretty much made up our minds whom we want to follow: Jesus Christ or Satan. I wish Reason could help people take the right side -as Mr. George thinks this book can show- but I think it needs more faith and good works, rather than intellectual efforts.
"There is no peace -says the Lord- for the wicked." (Isaiah 48:22)
"The Clash of Orthodoxies" & the Moral Environment.......2007-01-01
I particularly appreciated Professor George's presentation of societal concern for the moral environment: "people who suppose that prostitution, adultery, fornication, & the like are morally innocent are profoundly mistaken....Laws against intrinsic evils such as prostitution, pornography, drug abuse, & the like, as well as those regulating gambling & alcohol, are justified, in part, by a concern to protect the public environment" (pp. 101 - 108)
Pornography is far from victimless: "images such as those offered to readers of Swank tend to corrupt and deprave by doing precisely what they are designed to do, namely arousing sexual desire that is utterly unintegrated with the procreative and unitive goods that give the sexual congress of men and women, as husbands & wives, its value, meaning, & significance....pornography is degrading & dehumanizing for everyone, but I have no doubt that women and girls get the worst of it....Women...are more likely to be abandoned and left unsupported by their sexual partners. They are overwhelmingly more likely to be 'traded in' for younger and sleeker models, even by 'respectable' husbands. It would be very surprising if they were not more likely to suffer domination, exploitation, and abuse....Anyone who makes the stuff available...does an injustice....everybody has a stake in the moral ecology of the community that pornography degrades" (pp. 115 - 121).
A Rational Approach to Understanding Our Cultures.......2006-04-23
To describe this complex book, the work "uneven" comes to mind. At times, such as when he is discussing public versus private morality, Mr. George employs an essay style and writes in everyday language. At other times, as in his exploration of the role of natural law in our judicial system, his writing becomes highly technical, and quite hard to follow for one not versed in philosophy and law. Surprisingly, I found the opinions in his straightforward essays far more enlightening than the conclusions he painstakingly arrives at in the more labored, academic sections of the book. For example, after an extremely detailed discourse on natural law and judicial activism, he concludes by saying,
"...It was the majority justices' undefended moral presuppositions about contraception, and not anything they could actually find in the Constitution's protections of bedrooms and other private places, that accounts for their sweeping decision."
As much as I agree with the conclusion, I don't think you need a law degree to figure that one out! On the other hand, Mr. George presents some wonderful insights on a host of moral issues, especially when he turns to bioethics-an area in which he claims no expertise whatsoever.
Among the many great ideas he develops, I found these particularly helpful:
1. His demonstration that so-called "private" morals have public consequences: A convincing rebuttal to those who insist on "doing their own thing."
2. His exploration of the Judeo-Christian concept of the unity of mind, body and spirit and the dualistic view of man that characterizes the secular attitude. It reveals much about the trains of thought that lead to irreconcilable differences on issues such as abortion and pornography.
3. His account of the history of American bishops since Vatican II. He explains how the Church squandered so much of its influence on moral issues. He shows how the bishops, by meddling in politics with specific policy recommendations, not only obscured Church moral teachings, they provided enemies of the Church with a pretext for ignoring those moral teachings: In effect, the Bishops caused most Americans to perceive the Church as just another interest group.
Despite the depressing tone-the wide gulf that separates secular and religious thinking, the enormous stakes involved in this clash of orthodoxies-George ends on a positive note. He calls on Catholics to unite with Evangelical Protestants (and others) to form a political bloc for life. Perhaps this will lead to an even broader unity among people who value life in absolute terms.
Clash of Orthodoxies.......2006-02-28
A serious subject addressed as a polemic. Selected quotes are set up as straw men and then attacked. Felt repetitive and unenlightening.
Comparative Study.......2005-03-18
This is a comparative look at conservativism versus secularism in a truly scholarly manner. It covers a range of topics from pro-abortion/anti-abortion; homosexuality/hetersexuality; sexual fidelity/adult consentual sexual behavior to the natural laws, laws of the courts and civil rights to what side of the issue do you stand on. Although the author presents the Judeo-Christian standpoint, he allows for others to critique his position which is also published in this account. This book is to challenge you and to help you to define your own point of view
Book Description
When both George W. Bush and Osama bin Laden cite God as being on their side, it dramatically illustrates the public use and contemporary clash of religious languages. But even more common, says renowned ethicist James Gustafson, is the everyday dissonance between religious language and the many "secular" interpretations of the same events. How do Christians understand providence, divine action, and other religious realities in our complex, multivalent world?
In this important work, expanded from his Princeton Warfield Lectures, Gustafson strongly urges Christians to take a hard look at their religious discourse and its relationship to all the other discoursesscientific, secular, philosophicalthat inform our worldview. Pastors, theologians, and laypeople alike, he argues, regularly and unthinkingly accommodate their religious views to these other realms, or allow their religious views to be manipulated for other purposes.
Gustafson sets out a helpful typology of relationships, from complete religious rejection of secular discourse to full accommodation. Citing contemporary thinkers and examples from a full range of fields, he challenges Christians to a greater self-consciousness and honesty about their religious commitments and doctrinal formulations.
As relevant to the pulpit as to the podium and the poli- tical stump, Gustafson's brief, thoughtful volume calls all Christians to face the hard intellectual work that is necessary to forge an honest and publicly relevant faith today.

A Probing and Thoughtful Book.......2004-04-08
This short book argues a threefold thesis: first, that the same actions, events, texts, or phenomenon are perceived and interpreted from different points of view, e.g., commonsense, biology, theology, etc.; second, that these interpretations take place on several interacting levels, namely, as descriptions, as explanations, as evaluations, and as giving meaning; and third, that the resulting interactions between points of view and levels take three typical forms: rejection, absorption, and accommodation. A recurring motif is that genuine conflict is present and unavoidable, yet interaction continues to be inevitable. Thus accommodation ends up being the most adequate stance both descriptively and normatively. A truly thoughtful and probing book.
Book Description
Most people think that free-market ideas and theories were first substanially developed in the eighteenth century by figures such as Adam Smith. In this revised edition of Faith and Liberty, Alejandro A. Chafuen illustrates this misconception by examining the sixteenth and seventeenth century writings of a group of Catholic theologians and philosophers, known as the Late-Scholastics. In this revised ediiton, Chafuen blosters his case by including recent and pertinent material which gives rise to new questions and concerns.

Second Hand Review.......2003-07-16
This book uncovers an earlier view of economics than Adam Smith, which is not only Austrian, but finds free-market policies compatible with a moral and religous tradition. It's remarkable how modern the thought is of these mid 17th century thinkers...
Book Description
A Christian Approach to Controversial Topics in Science
Cloning, the environment, stem cell research, cutting-edge reproductive technologies, genetic engineering . . . Splashed across television screens and newspapers and argued in classrooms and over the water cooler, these are among the most hotly-debated issues of our day. Does religion belong in the laboratory? What relationship exists between science and Christian faith? Are the two mutually exclusive? Arguing that Christianity has much to contribute to the scientific and ethical debates facing today's world, gifted scientists and committed Christians Alexander and White ask the hard questions as they examine some of the greatest scientific and ethical challenges of the age.
Topics include: the new genetics
reproductive technologies
cloning
the significance of evolution
the environment and climate change
sustainable consumption
Customer Reviews:
an excellent ballanced look at science and faith.......2006-09-02
This is an excellent, even-handed examination of how thoughtful Christianity and responsible science can co-exist. The authors examine the basic principles underlying most of today's "hot topics" in science and ethics (evolution, abortion, cloning, the environment, etc.) and give the reader the facts they need to come to their own understanding of what is "right." This book does not assume that all good Christians will agree on these dificult issues, but they do assume that we need to be responsible in thinking them through.
I really appreciated the way they focussed on the science behind the issues and the basic relevant biblical principles behind the debate, and then let their reader come to his/her own conclusion.
