Customer Reviews:
Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.
A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02
This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.
Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30
This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.
A matchless guide.......2003-08-03
While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.
Application Oriented.......2003-07-01
In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Product Development

Book Description
Wouldn't it be great if you could design a product with the customer in mind - right from the very start? Well, now there's a way: Quality Function Development, or QFD, translates the needs of the consumer directly into the design and development of new products and services. By focusing on customer needs and incorporating them into every phase of the manufacturing process, it eliminates waste and improves customer satisfaction. And that means increased sales, greater profits, and a bigger share of the market. Step-by-Step QFD is a practical, hands-on guide to implementing QFD at any organization. Written by an expert in the field, it shoes how the intensive study of consumer needs can be used to help you dramatically outperform the competition. In fact, the strategies outlined in this book have already met with great success at a number of corporations both within and outside of the United States. This workbook includes a case study of QFD in action, 34 helpful workshops, and an analysis of the synergy between QFD, TRIZ, and Taguchi. So whether you're a QFD trainer, project manager, design engineer, or manufacturer, Step-by-Step QFD will show you how to let one voice drive your entire design process - the customer's!
Customer Reviews:
Badly written.......2001-06-05
This book is not very well written. It jumps from one detailed description to another, without giving enough overview or bridging material. It seems like this book evolved from presentation slides, and the author failed to include enough of the bridging, higher-level exposition that keeps people oriented from slide to slide. This is a little disappointing, and it makes it more difficult to get value from this book.
Good examples...not well written.......2001-05-19
This book provides a nice overview of QFD with more than adequate examples. One of the nicer things is that it provides Workshop forms from which you can begin putting together a training forum. However, where this book fails is in the original authorship and editing. To be honest, it must be one of the most poorly put-together books I have read. Incorrect spellings, incomplete thoughts, and figure-to-text mismatches makes this book all but un-readable. If you need a book filled with examples at a decent rate, this is the one for you. If you can, skip this train and spend your money more wisely on a book that the author and publisher obviously took more time than a weekend to put together.
Well written book about a valuable technique.......2001-03-29
I stumbled into QFD by accident: while browsing through sample drawings in Visio I spotted a "House of Quality Matrix" under Business Diagrams. The drawing looked fascinating, which led me to do a quick search on the Internet. The search yielded a large number of hits and interesting content. That, in turn, led me to this book because capturing and validating requirements is a difficult undertaking and I am always on the lookout for new techniques and tools.
The book opened a whole new world to me. The opening chapter, "The Role of the Customer in Design", starts with an example of using QFD in a project and gives compelling reasons for using this technique. Subsequent chapters walk you through the mechanics of a generic design process. This prepares you for the detailed treatment of QFD that follows.
Based on my initial research QFD looks simple and straightforward. However, this book reveals a rich process and set of procedures that show its real power (and complexity for large undertakings). For example, I discovered that the "house of quality" structure can have multiple matrices, each of which is linked. This gives both forward and backwards traceability, but requires painstaking attention to detail. This is where this book proves its value - it breaks this complexity down into manageable pieces and provides you with a thorough understanding of the process.
The section that I found most meaningful and valuable addresses customer segments. I am an IT consultant who specializes in service delivery, so my natural focus is on strengthening alignment between IT and the business processes that IT supports. Among the things I learned from this section are: how to effectively identify customer segments and classify them, what measurements are meaningful (especially important for satisfaction measurement), and ranking and prioritizing. One of the most powerful prioritization techniques that I discovered in this book is the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). This technique is an excellent way to objectively quantify priorities and requirements. The steps are relatively simple: 1.Choose the requirements to be prioritized. 2.Set the requirements into the rows and columns of the n x n AHP matrix. 3.Perform a pair wise comparison of the requirements in the matrix according to a set criteria. 4.Sum the columns. 5.Normalize the sum of rows. 6.Calculate the row averages.
However, for a large number of requirements this can quickly get complicated in a hurry. The simple math for small numbers of requirements gets replaced by sophisticated (to me) matrix techniques that are outside of my skill set when the number of requirements to be prioritized grows. Also, AHP is useful for managing requirements revealed via surveys. Most of my requirements come directly from contact with end users. I have found that a facilitated meeting using paired comparison techniques to be as valuable aas AHP. This is not covered in the book, which I found to be a minor shortcoming. If you want details about paired comparisons I will be happy to share them via email.
The rest of the book addresses QFD within the context of quality planning and management, and measuring the effectiveness of quality. Interwoven into these are valuable tools and techniques, such as affinity diagrams, TRIZ and various analysis techniques. While the remainder of the book began focusing on manufacturing, which is outside of my professional specialty, I found the material interesting because some of my clients are manufacturers and it gave insights into business processes that will surely prove valuable in the future. Almost everything in this book was new to me. The author did a magnificent job of explaining how to effectively capture, prioritize and management requirements in ways that I never expected. Moreover, the methods embodied in QFD are both powerful in that you can actually capture the voice of the customer, and practical in that you can trace a final design (product or process) back to customer requirements. I also learned about some powerful techniques, such as AHP, that I would have never discovered had I not read this book. If you are involved in requirements management, product or process design or quality then this book will be a valuable addition to your professional reading.
Overall Excellent Introduction to QFD, Good First QFD Book.......1999-10-17
Great book for persons just starting QFD within their organizations. Straight forward step-by-step chapters that build upon each other to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of QFD concepts and mechanics. Team/group excercises within each chapter make this a great introductory training manual to solidify learning of material covered in each chapter.
Our Branch Office Will Get One Too.......1998-01-28
I appreciate the way the author communicates. His style is as simple as QFD, but QFD wouldn't have been simple for me without the book.

Book Description
The present environment for research and development in business can be characterized in two simple words: inconsistent horizons. As the rapid development of technology and the number of new scientific discoveries have led to tremendous change, businesses have modified their entire corporate structure, downsizing, and operating in a constant state of flux. This environment with its inconsistency makes R&D a risky venture. Total Quality in Research and Development looks at these problems and presents models, systems, and paradigms that offer a systematic improvement process for businesses and their management. The unparalleled challenge faced by those working in R&D functions is examined, offering beneficial approaches for implementing total quality improvement efforts. This book shows how TQ promotes rather than stifles inventiveness, ingenuity, and individual accomplishment. Through collaborative efforts, both team and individual performance initiates and maintains clear objectives as well as produces the optimal environment for the prospering of research. The total quality systems presented here are not just a system, method, or philosophy, but rather a working model for daily operations. This valuable and practical working model examines actual daily work practices, guideposts and measurements for success, and management practices that stress creativity and group achievements that support company goals.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyed the book, good reference material, sound strategy.......1998-04-07
The book gives an excellent assessment tool for determining TQ readiness. The step-by-step process of implementing TQ is well documented. Problem-solving using the improvement method is excellent. I especially enjoyed the communication effectiveness instrument, a real plus for our organization.
Well written, easy-to-read. A helpful guide for future businesses. Good information on customer satisfaction.

An Update Reference for Product Quality Development.......1999-06-05
I am a quality engineer in a world-wide leader manufacturing company. I use this book as one of my reference books in my daily work. In brief, this is a quick reference for me to tackle the normal technical problems that I may normally face to.
It is certain that, you need specific handbooks for specific topics in detail. However, I would suggest my friends who work in product development or quality related jobs to buy one.

Book Description
Six Sigma -- the management strategy Jack Welch attributes GE's phenomenal success to -- is being implemented by many leading organizations looking for dramatic profit increases and improved customer satisfaction. But Six Sigma in production is less than half the story -- Six Sigma in design is where the money is. If you change a product after it is launched it will cost you 1,000 times more than if you made those changes during the design stage. Subir Chowdhury, the leading quality expert who introduced Six Sigma to the UK in his last book, has done it again. The current book attacks a company's problems at the product development stage and presents a revolutionary five-step process that takes a company all the way to Six Sigma.
Customer Reviews:
A good place to start with DFSS.......2006-09-19
I would tend to agree with most of the reviewers on this book; it is a good primer for people that have not been exposed to DFSS, or for someone that has been away from DFSS for a spell and need a refresher. It is certainly worth the $12.
It is a good book, well structured and well-written. Chapter 4, "Identify and Define Opportunity" is well illustrated and explained - the "House of Quality" proves that this is not the "only way to achieve Six Sigma", as it is an illustration of the correlation between the who, what, where, when, how and how much of an initiative - the mantra of most process improvement methodologies.
What this book does really well, is bring home the point that you must design the end of the process - control - to make a process deliver what it should - performance & quality. Improvement for a reason.
This is a good quick read for management that wants a broad understanding of DFSS. However if you are looking for a book with substance and a lot of application info, consider "Design for Six Sigma : A Roadmap for Product Development." By Kai Yang and Basem EI-Haik.
Excellent Primer for Managers and Executives.......2005-11-21
This book by Quality Guru Subir Chowdhury is EXCELLENT PRIMER for managers and executives. As Mr. Chowdhury has been credited in the prestigious Industry Week magazine for introducing this new book and popularizing DFSS in the world.
I loved this book's easy style of writing and STRONGLY RECOMMEND it to anyone who wants to know what is DFSS and its applicability.
Excellent Book.......2005-06-11
Design For Six Sigma by Subir Chowdhury is the timely book on the topic. This book is about DOING RIGHT at the first time. This book is about FIRE PREVENTION rather than Fire Fighting. If American corporations want to lead the world, they MUST adopt DFSS. And to understand this complex topic, MANAGERS and LEADERS MUST READ this book. Take Chowdhury's advice very seriously. The book explains the common misconceptions about the topic and its usage of tools. By writing this valuable book, Chowdhury filled the gap for the first time.
Definitely Chowdhury's bestseller THE POWER OF SIX SIGMA is a 2 hour easy read story book, which is enjoyable and fun reading. Even though this book is written in business style, still it is fun reading. Chowdhury's style of writing excites the reader on the process.
Six Sigma Corporate Executive Champions from Caterpillar, Johns Manville, Merrill Lynch, Sunbeam, and Dow Corning highly endorsed this book. After finish reading the book, I understand why all of these Six Sigma devotees are so high on this book.
Thank you, Chowdhury!!! We look forward to your NEXT MASTERPIECE!!!
If you are serious about Six Sigma or DFSS, READ THIS BOOK. I strongly recommend it.
OK intro for total novices but teaches you virtually nothin.......2003-07-26
That book is good for a coast-to-coast flight. Has virtually no substance, can't learn anything from it. Has some value for novices. Misassigned quotes, incorrect dates, off the cuff graphs, fluffy fluff.
Borrow it from a library, do not buy for you bookshelf. If you have a backwards looking manager, buy it for him as a gift.
Of no interest to Black Belts looking to implement DFSS.......2003-04-03
This book may appeal to middle management or executive level managers who are taking a first pass at DFSS and are not familiar with Six Sigma in general. Frankly, this book is a waste to time if you are looking for a meaty how-to on how to implement design for six sigma at your company. The author keeps telling the reader about the power of DFSS but lacks the substance to get you there. It is written as if it were a lengthy abstract to another textbook.
If you want to buy a gift for your boss--you're all set.
If you want a useful reference volume on DFSS look elsewhere.
