Book Description

This Audio CD is designed for anyone who wants to learn how to recognize bird songs. It features the sounds of 189 different bird species found in the Midwest and Northeast States.

Each bird song recording is followed by a short description of the sound along with a common mnemonic used to remember it. Many well-known song mnemonics such as "Who cooks for you?" for the Barred Owl and "Poor Sam Peabody" for the White-throated Sparrow are included. Following the song and mnemonic, the source of the sound is revealed. By naming the bird at the end of each track, the listener is allowed to wonder and guess at the nature of the sound. Active listening, similar to what one experiences in the field while searching for an unknown bird song, is a key to engaging the memory process.

One way to use this CD is to enable the "Random Play" or "Shuffle" option on a home CD player, portable stereo, or personal computer. Although it may be frustrating at first, repetition of this "quiz" game will quickly improve recognition skills. Gaining familiarity with these songs will greatly increase any bird watcher's enjoyment and awareness of birds in their natural habitat.

Features:

- 189 bird species found in the Midwest and Northeast states
- Digital bird song recordings made in Wisconsin
- Brief narration after each song includes descriptive, memorable and often funny mnemonics
- Can be used as a field guide to learn and identify songs or as a recognition quiz game
- Easy to use alphabetical track listing of all birds and their mnemonics
- It is a great gift for any birdwatcher, beginner or advanced.
- Total running time: 60 minutes

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD.......2007-08-21

After many years of bird watching I decided it was high time I learned to bird by ear.

I'm pretty familiar with the limited species that show up in my Southern California yard (House Finches, House Sparrows, Mourning Doves and Western Scrub Jays mostly).

I've purchased a few different CD's on birding by ear (including the Stokes CD's), but this is the one I like the best. I keep it in my CD player in the car so I can learn/study the bird songs while going to and from work each day.

I have noticed a slight regional accent in some of the birds that I'm familiar with, but it's not so significant that I don't recognise the House Sparrow or the House Finch when I hear it.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is trying to learn to bird by ear.

4 out of 5 stars Great for newbies.......2007-06-07

I've lived on a farm or outside the city for most of my life, but never really bothered to figure out the different bird calls. After listening to this CD a couple of times, my wife and I can now pick out some of the different birds. The more calls we learn, the more fun it is to learn more.

1 out of 5 stars Overly Short Songs Presented at Shotgun Speed.......2007-05-25

While the coverage of songs is thorough, the acoustic quality is not nearly as good as four other bird song CDs that I also recently purchased (Stokes - Eastern Region, Peterson Field Guide sets - Eastern, Songbirds Bible by Proctor, Common Bird Songs by Borror). Moreover, the songs are very short, with minimal repetition or variation. It is nice to have narration that follows the songs, so the listener has a chance to guess what type of bird sings each song. However, given that the songs are so short, and the pauses after the songs and before narration are even shorter, there is no time for an advanced beginner birder such as myself to reflect, or even spit out the answer instantaneously. Furthermore, the next song often starts virtually "on top" of the narration (which is little more than just the name of the bird), making it easy to associate the bird name with the wrong song (ie, the song that follows narration rather than the song that precedes).

5 out of 5 stars excellent for beginning and intermediate birders.......2006-08-01

The alphabetical indexing is excellent for those who have not mastered the taxanomic order as found in most lists and books. The presentation of the song before the identification is useful in honing ones ears. Would like it to be longer than the ~110 species presented.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best bird song training & review guide.......2006-07-10

This is an outstanding CD for learning bird songs. Each song starts with the bird song and then the narrator describes the song and provides a short phrase or description that aids you with identifying it, followed again with the essence of the song. This format allows you to quiz yourself. I bought my first copy two years ago and have bought 5 more to give to friends since then. Everyone has commented that its a great guide. I own several other guides including Birding by Ear and More Birding by Ear and this is by far my favorite.

Book Description

For the first time, this special edition combines excerpts from John J. Audubon's vivid and witty descriptions with 97 full-color plates of the birds of the Northeast, creating a guide that Audubon might have published himself. In his own distinctive voice, Audubon casts light on his inspiration, exuberance, and deep love for birds and nature. Audubon's observations take us into the field with him and "see" the birds as he did.

In this first in a series of regional guides, editor Julien Tavener takes Audubon out of the confinement of museums and galleries, and places him back in the fields and forests he loved.

Perfect for any Audubon enthusiast or birder, this personal field guide portrays a unique insight into what Audubon saw, both through his art and his eloquent writings.

5 out of 5 stars A new look at Audubon and his birds.......2004-02-24

I love this book, and anyone interested in birds, history, and/or art is bound to love it, too.

John J. Audubon's Guide; Birds of the Northeast pairs a selection of the familiar, classic Audubon images with his descriptions of the birds as he observed them in the early 19th century. Audubon's writing style is poetic and vivid, and if you are familiar mainly with his images, this book is a very accessible way to introduce yourself to his writing.

Ron Tyler's essay on Audubon's work makes for enjoyable reading, too. And, finally, the book is handsomely designed and handily sized.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea - Nicely Executed.......2004-01-31

This is the first in a series of four books, delineated by region, that will present the text and octavo images of Audubon's birds. The 34-page introductory biography by Dr. Ron Tyler is worth the purchase price by itself. Even advanced birdwatchers will learn something from Audubon's descriptions that have been expertly edited by Julien Taverner. I have been researching and writing about Audubon for fifteen years and even I found some new references in the excellent and exhaustive biography. If he were alive today, this is the way Audubon would have done it. Great gift idea for birders, print collectors, and history buffs.

5 out of 5 stars In his own words.......2004-01-16

This book is a real addition to any birder's library. Combining John Audubon's well known and beautiful images of birds drawn in the 1830's with his lovely descriptions. The book has a good biography of Audubon as well as the pictures and Audubon's notes. You can really hear Audubon's love of birds and nature in his writing. I liked the fact that it was styled like a
guide from the 19th century. It is beautifully illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Be sure to get the newest edition.......2003-06-17

There are now two editions of Boyle, the older version with an orange cover and the Barred Owl, and a newer version with a photo of a Hooded Warbler on the front. You'll want to make sure you get the latter, since many things have changed over the years.

5 out of 5 stars The New Boyle.......2002-09-13

It is one of the milder species of blasphemy, I suppose, to call any book one's "bible"; but since its appearance 17 years ago (!), Bill Boyle's NJBFG has served thousands of the birding faithful as ritual object and authoritative companion alike. My own copy of the first printing, with its ugly laminated binding in shreds and the bookblock bulging from tipped-in notes, photocopies, and clippings, is probably the single most used volume in my birding library: field guides come and go, but for nearly two decades now, Boyle has come and gone wherever I have.
Just how intensive my use of the book has been came clear to me with the arrival--"long-awaited," in the reviewer's cliche--of the second edition. As I read through the new treatments of areas long familiar to me, I discovered that (like many NJ birders) I'd actually memorized verbatim great chunks of the first edition, and that I noticed every new word and every new turn of phrase in the revised accounts. If it is true that every obsession is at its base religious, then this book truly is the birder's bible.
The birder's bible: divine in inspiration, certainly, but here and there the mortal nature of its human author peeks through. As anyone who has ever written anything knows, it is even more difficult to revise than to write, and this revised edition has some flaws that were not apparent in the first. There are far more copy-editing errors this time around, and the index--more important than ever, given the new book's rather breathless layout--is not an infallible help (just try to find the main entry for Merrill Creek!). Compared to the enjoyably expansive style of the first edition, the new entries strike me as occasionally a bit too concise, a problem that might have been eased by simply eliminating even more of the old sections treating sites that, like the Institute Woods, now offer (in Boyle's words) "the mere shadow" of their former glory; valuable space is also sacrificed to a number of new full-page illustrations.
These things having been said, the book is still an outstanding example of the bird-finding guide. The maps seem to be largely up to date and accurate (Sussex County birders: are Rockport and Blackdirt marshes really the same place?), the annotated species list is even more useful than in the first edition, and the binding isn't likely to crackle and peel. It will take only weeks, I am sure, for New Jersey birders to start quoting this new Boyle, chapter and verse.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all skill levels.......2002-04-29

This book is just as useful for seasoned birders as it is for the beginner, or the person new to New Jersey. Beginners will appreciate its review of New Jersey's best birding destinations; seasoned pros will enjoy the depth of the information and the amount of detail on nesting species and accounts of rarities.

For us locals, "Bird Finding" is great for those days when you want to hop in the car and travel to somewhere a little different, or if you want to explore a familiar destination a little more closely. The book offers detailed directions (although some of the exit numbers and streets have changed since its publication date), including which trail to follow, which tree to investigate, etc. Its accuracy is remarkable. It's clear Bill Boyle knows each location intimately and visits them often.

This is a must-have for any birder living in the state (and there are lots), and any vacationer planning to spend more than a weekend in New Jersey.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely indispensable for birding in New Jersey.......2001-01-26

Despite its small size and large population, New Jersey is one of the prime locations in North America for spotting birds. First, it holds a strategic position along the Atlantic flyway, which insures that a wide variety of migrating species pass through in both the spring and fall. Second, it has a wide variety of habitats within rather short distances of each other: seacoast, salt marshes, coastal plain, pine barrens, lakes, mountains, forests, etc.

By nearly any measure of interest to birders, such as typical number of species seen in an average year (over 330) and maximum found in a given day (over 250), New Jersey is surpassed only by California and Texas. A birder with average skill and energy can find over 100 species in a day during peak migration in May; the best teams of elite birders can find 200-230 on a day in May, and Bill Boyle has been a member of some of them.

The book is organized geographically, with each chapter devoted to a prime birding spot, and the chapters arranged by region. Most chapters have an excellent map, plus detailed text on how the birding differs by season, and on the relative scarcity or abundance of the various species found there. Driving directions are precise and easy to follow.

The only problem, and a growing one, is this: indispensable as this book is, it is now 15 years old, and showing its age. Roads have changed. Some birding areas have been lost to development. Others are simply no longer accessible. And birds change their habits: some old hot spots aren't so hot anymore, and new ones have arisen. This book cried out for a revised edition at least 5 years ago, but one does not seem to be in the works. No other book as comprehensive and as well-presented is available, so this is still the bible for NJ birders. Just be ready (a) to do some more homework before visiting any given site mentioned in this book or (b) risk some disappointment. All in all, I'd say that this book is still about 75% accurate.

5 out of 5 stars great for finding out what's likely to be where.......1999-11-06

This book covers the vast majority (something like 80) of the popular bird watching sites in New jersey. It tells you what birds you are likely to see there and where the best places (and best times) are. It has lots of detail on rare birds. There is also a great section in the back that goes species by species and tells you where you are most likely to see them and how common they are in New Jersey. You still need a good field guide, but this is a great book for actually finding the birds in the area.

        5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-05-30

Just bought this for my sister because I use my copy every time my daughter asks me what type of bird is at the feeder. Very easy to identify with the great pictures.

        3 out of 5 stars somewhat juvenile.......2006-02-21

I was looking for more of a "field guide," and what I ended up with was what looks to me to be a childs picture book. The descriptions of the birds are simplistic: "Grouse are like jumbo-sized quail with broad, turkey-like tails." Types of birds are listed alphabetically rather than by type. Photographs are large and full color, with many taking up 1/4 to 1/2 of the page. I would recommend the book for older children (maybe 7-12ish?) but not for anyone looking for more scientific information on our avian friends.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-08-31

I am very impressed with this book. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but all of the descriptions of each bird are very interesting. I couldn't put the book down. It also had every northeast bird that I was interested in, and more! I am very happy that I purchased this book, and will always keep it for reference.

5 out of 5 stars Best photographic identification bird book........2004-12-09

By limiting the birds to species in this area and by including photographs that make identification easier, this book has always been the first one I reference when a newcomer enters my backyard. The photos are clear and sharp and the descriptions are brief and informative. I have given it as a gift and often recommended it to others. It is pretty enough to keep on your coffee table. I only wish I could find it in hardcover!

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful visual reference with stunning photograhs.......2000-06-11

I was impressed upon receiving this book, as I had no idea of its size. The book is large in dimension- which is a nice change from all the field guides to birds whose pictures make bird identification challenging. Beyond the visual effects, the author seems to have a bit of wit as exemplified in his writing style. This is not one of the best reference books, as it lacks specific detail on habitat, migration, species, etc. I don't think the author intended to compete in that forum anyway; however, I do wish there was an index for quick reference. All in all, a book displaying good writing with moderate description- but with stunning photography.
