Book Description

In this, his first major book, Mark Steyn--probably the most widely read, and wittiest, columnist in the English-speaking world--takes on the great poison of the twenty-first century: the anti-Americanism that fuels both Old Europe and radical Islam. America, Steyn argues, will have to stand alone. The world will be divided between America and the rest; and for our sake America had better win.

5 out of 5 stars Unfortunately True.......2007-10-14

Every single American should read this book! He explains exactly how the Muslims are conquering the world. More wives = more babies = more Muslims = more terrorism. This is a religion that should nor even exist in the 21st century. They are commanded to murder everyone that refuses to convert to Islam. Most Americans do not understand that the greatest threat to the future of the world (especially America) is the Muslim religion.

5 out of 5 stars America Alone.......2007-10-11

Every person in the USA should read this book. Today in the Dallas Morning news(10/10/07)there is an editorial by Anne Applebaum verifing one of the facts stated it this book. Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who is under death threat because of her comments about the mistreatment of women in the Dutch Muslin community had to move to the US because the Dutch say it is too expensive to protect her and she will not shut up. No free speech for her. Mohammed Bouyeri murdered the Dutch writer, Theo Van Gohg, because he made a film about the oppression of Muslim women.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, but also an important message........2007-10-11

While I cannot say that anybody reading this should have more kids just out of the guilt this book might give you, it is an important message about the sad effects of low birthrates. Mark Steyn has a quick wit and funny tone that is clearly not politically correct (good for him). Anybody who enjoys a good laugh or is concerned about terrorism should read this.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!.......2007-10-10

This book was every bit as good as I had heard. I've always enjoyed Mark Steyn, but hadn't gotten a chance to read this yet because I had a stack of books in front of it. That's my loss, because this was one of the most profound and eye-opening books I've ever read. To be honest, I pay pretty close attention to this conflict we find ourselves in, so most of the individual facts in this book weren't exactly foreign to me. But Steyn pulls all this together and presents it in such a concise, clear and entertaining way that I was able to put the pieces together in a way I hadn't even imagined. His demographic data alone is shocking, and should make every person in Europe and Canada sit up and take serious note - I'll be paying very close attention to what happens over the next few years "across the pond", as they say, for how goes Europe, so will eventually go America. I plan to buy several more copies of this book and hand them out to friends and family. I highly suggest it.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent book. Really crunches the numbers like no other book........2007-10-05

This book really lays out the problems with hard numbers and facts in a way I have never seen and is easy to understand. I recomend this book to anyone who is worried about the muslim issue. People in Europe better read it asap!

Book Description

It was the 1950s, a time of calm, a time when all things were new and everything seemd possible. A few years before, a noble war had been won, and now life had returned to normal.

For one little boy, however, life had become anything but "normal."

To all appearances, he and his family lived an almost idyllic life. The father was a respected professor, the mother a witty and elegant lady, someone everyone loved. They were parents to three bright, smiling children: two boys and a girl. They lived on a sunny street in a small college town nestled neatly in a leafy valley. They gave parties, hosted picnics, went to church—just like their neighbors. To all appearances, their life seemed ideal. But it was, in fact, all appearances.

Lineage, tradition, making the right impression—these were matters of great importance, especially to the mother. But behind the facade this family had created lurked secrets so dark, so painful for this one little boy, that his life would never be the same.

It is through the eyes of that boy—a grown man now, revisiting that time—that we see this seemingly serene world and watch as it slowly comes completely and irrevocably undone.

Beautifully written, often humorous, sometimes sweet, ultimately shocking, this is a son's story of looking back with both love and anger at the parents who gave him life and then robbed him of it, who created his world and then destroyed it.

As author Lee Smith, who knew this world and this family, observed, "Alcohol may be the real villain in this pain-permeated, exquisitely written memoir of childhood—but it is also filled with absolutely dead-on social commentary of this very particular time and place. A brave, haunting, riveting book."

5 out of 5 stars Most moving book I've ever read.......2007-09-07

Words escape me. Thank God they didn't escape Goolrick. I'll remember this book until I die.

5 out of 5 stars Best autobiography I've ever read -- searing, honest, .......2007-08-24

Sometimes I look back at my own little girl, abused and neglected in the corner, but Goolrick has constructed that image, written about it, and in doing so has purged his demons. At the same time, he captures an era of American History with such clarity and viciousness that no history book could ever convey. And he never lets on what happens, until you are punched in the stomach with a grief so hard you cry for him, for yourself, and for everyone like him. His bravery is so unbelievable -- he wrote this book ONLY because he wanted to save other children from his fate -- that I believe he deserves a Pulitzer. Or a Nobel. It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Sad But True.......2007-06-11

Beautifully written, very sad story of a life marred by narcissism, dysfunction and alcoholism. Not what you'd call "light reading," but well worth the melancholy trip if you love it when the music of words rings true.

4 out of 5 stars Sad but beautifully written.......2007-06-11

You really need to be ready for this book. It is touching and made me very sad for this man. Some people come out of horrific situations and some people drown in them. The writting is beautiful and I enjoyed reading this book. I think it is brave to put himself out there.

5 out of 5 stars Eye opening.......2007-06-08

This was a very quick read for me. I found it sometimes humorous. But over all a serous book about serious issues. I am a Therapeutic foster parent of troubled children. I certainly have a good understanding of the issues my children face. However this book will not only give you a better understanding, it will allow you to get into his life. It really brings it home. Definitely a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Chalked Full...................2007-09-26

As a Druid High Priestess whom runs a large circle and runs PsychicSpellCaster.com, I can honestly tell you that this is full of very real information. Information that explains how the metaphysical is not really a mystical 'secret'- it is all explainable and can be used in a persons life to create a better life. The book can be heavy at times, but the format it is printed in really makes reading it easier (nice graphics, seperate paragraphs for covered subjects).
Over the years, many clients and students of mine have approached me with an array of metaphysical questions that can be explained by Quantum Physics (which is the underlined thread in this book). Therefore in my professional opinion, this is a must read.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading. Realistically this is a self-help book with no scientific connection........2007-08-11

This book/movie is good in that it at least briefly skimmed principles of quantum mechanics and probably provokes some optimistic thought in its readers. Unfortunately, they dragged the most precisely proven scientific theory out onto the self-help floor. I honestly don't see the connection between Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and learning to better control your life with your mind. Taken word for word these two things might mesh together, but really, this book/movie strips all science from quantum theory, turning it into a two hour message to learn how to think with your mind.

This book has no place citing quantum mechanics or anything remotely scientific. It might be useful if you want to stare at the ceiling and try to figure out how to guide your life with what you have behind your eyes. Go read something on philosophy if you want to discover something about thought that isn't purely scientific.

3 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, though not much new.......2007-07-31

I loved the film, despite having already researched most of the information in it. The movie had an awesome way of presenting the information and putting it into a visual form, so i was looking forward to the book.

I was immediately impressed with its looks and high quality finish. Reading it though was a little dull. I am perhaps overly critical as the information was hardly new, however for those new to the quantum physics world this is a great starter. I was hoping for some new insights that the film missed, but no such luck.

I love having it on my shelf, and it was worth reading, but the film was far better. Buy this with little expectation and you will be happy with your buy.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-06-27

The chapter on the links between biochemistry and emotion makes the book worth buying. Knowing what is happening inside your body is the first step to controlling it.

I am not convinced that quantum physics is the reason that people can communicate beyond the ordinary five senses. None the less, I have refered back to the book several times and I do recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars The Movie was Flawed... the Book is Flawed........2007-06-19

The physics in this book is stretched into philosophies that can't possibly be derived from the data. The movie was just as flawed, only more confusing due to its pace and the little Flubber guy.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Full Monty........2007-10-08

My main interest in this subject lies in a search for answers to the question of why perfectly sane and intelligent people put faith in God above reasoning. Why do so many choose to believe so strongly with so little evidence? Unfortunately Thomas Gilovich absolutely refuses to cast light on religious delusions, but mainly states that theists and atheist "both need to develop the habit of thinking more broadly." Not helpful at all and sort of a faux pas to include this lame comment in the book.

Never the less, the book is a good and thorough introduction to the subject of our penchant for faulty reasoning, but also somewhat dry and repetitive. I wasn't exactly rolling on the floor with laughter, which might be too much to ask; but the many examples and anecdotes could be presented with greater vigour without harming the seriousness and validity of the study.

May I recommend: "Don't Believe Everything You Think: The 6 Basic Mistakes We Make in Thinking" by Thomas E. Kida, which is very similar in content and reference a lot of the same sources, but is also more playful and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Vulcans Should Read This Book.......2007-06-02

Hello, my name is Mr. Spock. You may know me from the TV series StarTrek. For years I've been tormented by the illogic of humans. Let's face it, Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy are not the sharpest phasers in the intergalactic utility belt!

Then I read Gilovich's book. It helped me realize that humans are most illogical in times of uncertainty when there is no clear trend and not enough information upon which to make a good decision. In such cases, especially when a decision must be made, logic is not going to be of much help. As a result, people develop simple, but often inaccurate, theories to help them through painful states of indecision. The decision may be good or not, but at least a decision has been made, and that alone provides comfort.

Unfortunately, humans also have a strong desire to justify their theories, and this is where they get into trouble. Data that proves the theory is retained and emphasized, and data that doesn't is heavily discounted. So the theory takes on a life of its own despite the facts, which admittedly may themselves be ambiguous at times.

The bottom line is that this book gave me a greater understanding of humans. As a result, I feel more comfortable communicating with them, and just being around them in general. If you're part Vulcan like I am, or even a logical human, I strongly suggest you read this excellent book about human thinking and decision making. You won't be sorry. Live long and prosper!

Mr. Scot, I have completed my Amazon review, and have obtained the Chinese food and pornography magazines the Captain has requested. Please beam me up now.

4 out of 5 stars Question your assumptions and challenge what you think you know.......2006-08-24

This book provides a well-organized survey of issues that limit our reasoning abilities:

- Our misperception of random events, as in the "clustering illusions" that lead us to believe in the hot hand, for example.

- Our misunderstanding of statistical regression, which, for instance, affects our perception of the roles of reward and punishment in education.

- Our tendency to seek confirmatory information, as in the justification of our choices.

- Our inability to see what could have happened under different circumstances, as in self-fulfilling prophecies (e.g. a negative first impression or the presumed insolvency of a financial institution).

- Our own biases that make us expose inconsistent information to more critical scrutiny than consistent information.

- Asymmetries that distort what we recall and, thus, what we take into account to evaluate the validity of beliefs (as in multiple endpoints situations or one-sided events).

- Our tendency to believe what we want to believe (specially about ourselves), as if beliefs were possessions.

- The distortions present in secondhand information (a.k.a. sharpening and leveling).

- The influence of what we think others believe (and also of the inadequate feedback we often receive about that).

These limitations make us draw incorrect conclusions and bolster erroneous beliefs. Being aware of them helps us in distinguishing what we know well from what we only think is true. Just this is of utmost importance for thinking clearly. Could there be a better reason for reading this book?

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Better Than It Was.......2006-07-29

Gilovich starts this book of with a real bang! After reading the Introduction, I thought this book would be really interesting and change the way I look at the world. He writes in a college-teacher tone that will not be approachable to those he most needs to reach. In other words, I really don't need a book to tell me to avoid holistic cretins, ESP, psychics, mysticism, and all that other garbage.

The first half of his book is concerned with a review of the psychology literature from the '70s and '80s on how people arrive at their beliefs. This is boring and somewhat like a set of lecture notes. The information in it is useful, but it could be summarized and edited. The second half of the book is devoted to why people shouldn't believe in the topics I mentioned above. Most people who read his book wouldn't even dream of subscribing to these beliefs, so the whole second half is pretty boring.

Gilovich finishes the book by telling us that psychologists are best at understanding the world and are the most perceptive professionals out there, bar none. While admitting that the core thought processes that lead to logical decision making come from hard science, Gilovich wants us to believe that the softies have perfected clear thinking about the world. He should have reread that portion of the book when he wasn't overheated and realized how silly it would sound to attorneys, physicians, scientists, and other thoughtful people.

5 out of 5 stars Required for all psychology students!!!.......2006-06-21

This book is a contemporary classic that should be required reading in all psychology programs. As a psychologist, I am regularly appalled by how few trained psychologists know of the research discussed in this book, indeed, of decision science in general!! It only goes to show, there's scientific psychology (of which this book qualifies), and then, well, there's the other 99%...the crap, fluff, unsupported, unscientific, claims and practices that arise out of pseudo-scientific approaches, misinterpretations of data, and fallacious assumptions and conclusions. As an exemplar of what's good in a field rife with methodological manure and hocus pocus B.S. (e.g. psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc.), this book really shines. Read it and discover why some of psychology really is a science.

Book Description

Once again, in this expanded Second Edition, Gary Howard outlines what good teachers know, what they do, and how they embrace culturally responsive teaching. Howard brings his bestselling book completely up to date with today's school reform efforts and includes a new introduction and a new chapter that speak directly to current issues such as closing the achievement gap, and to recent legislation such as No Child Left Behind. With our nation's student population becoming ever more diverse, and teachers remaining largely White, this book is now more important than ever. A must-read in universities and school systems throughout the country, We Can't Teach What We Don't Know continues to facilitate and deepen the discussion of race and social justice in education.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A useless book..........2007-09-14

The author spends half the book trying to establish (and burnish, in my opinion) his "Culturally Sensitive White Guy" credentials and the other half stating the freaking obvious. If you've ever lived in an area with more than one race, you'll get precious little from this book. On the other hand, if you're from northern Idaho, this might be just the ticket...

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on We Can't Teach What We Don't Know: White Teachers, Multiracial Schools.......2007-03-29

I found this book settling in the midst of my own efforts to sort out and address issues of White priviledge and dominance.
Gray Howard shares his journey through the difficult world and work of multicultural understanding with humor and sensitivity. He identifies the unspoken truths about priviledge and dominance in western culture, in such a way that relieves the burden of guilt, allows for self-reflection, and maps a path for growth for White educators.
The book addresses three key themes: Recognizing and acknowledging the dynamics of dominance; defining the stages of racial identity transformation; and identifying the ways in which improving cultural sensitivity can postively impact the lives and education of all students.
Howard encourages White teachers to explore their own racial identities and move along the path towards a transformationist White identity that seeks and values diverse points of view, connects with one's own cultural roots, involves self and students in explorations of other cultures and perspectives, engages in social action, and continues to grow and change.
This is not a "How To" book with road map to change, it is more of a "Why to" book with a topograhical map to help you plan your journey. Having read this book, I am inspired to continue my travels. To seek more information and find ways to promote a more intentional multicultural focus in my school and community.
I recommend this book for those teachers (White and otherwise) who are interested in or have already embarked on their own journeys.

5 out of 5 stars Info on multicultural education.......2007-02-14

This book is very informative. It gives new insight into how we as educators must refrain from the blame game and teach our students how to appreciate each of the individual cultures around the globe.

5 out of 5 stars Also Useful for Teachers of Color.......2006-10-13

This book was a nice surprise as a pre-service teacher in education classes where the realities of white supremacy is not discussed, the first hand experiences of teachers of color are silenced, black/Latino or "at-risk multicultural" students are demonized, poor white kids are invisible and the issues of other groups are addressed superficially through "practical strategies"mandated by here today/ gone tomorrow popular scholars. This book gave me as an African American educator a space to see how whiteness functions in everyone's lives in the public school system. Each page helped me understand better why white people sometimes act in certain ways.

Thank you Gary Howard for the excellent analysis and methods for all teachers to use as they transform themselves and their schools.

Book Description

Risk Intelligence gives executives and business managers a simple mental model and simple tools to manage these risks. According to the author's model, risks fall into two categories: knowable and therefore learnable, and unknowable and therefore difficult to prepare for.

The book not only shows readers how to analyse their knowable risks but helps them to appreciate the quality and utility of their own analysis. As it turns out, some people have a higher risk IQ than others and therefore analyse and manage risks more effectively. This book helps people of all risk aptitudes to assess and improve their risk IQs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Risk Intelligence is enthusiastically recommended for business leaders .......2006-11-05

Written by David Apgar, a managing director of the Corporate Executive Board best-practices research organization which serves senior executives at over 2,500 institutions worldwide, Risk Intelligence: Learning To Manage What We Don't Know openly challenges the common presumption that risk management and related business judgments is a matter solely for technical specialists. Risk Intelligence teaches the reader how to distinguish learnable risks from random risks in business decisions, how to score one's own risk intelligence, how to conduct a solid risk strategy audit, how to build networks that can adapt dynamically to risk, and much more. Written in plain terms with clear examples, Risk Intelligence is enthusiastically recommended for business leaders seeking to sharpen their flexibility and adaptability when confronting unknown threats.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-09-19

Apgar's focus on learnable risks offers some very useful frameworks for applying risk management concepts to a real-word competitive business environment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent new perspective on risk.......2006-09-08

This is a fantastic book with powerful insight about the failing of portfolio theory when it comes to understanding and managing business risks. Apgar offers wonderful examples to illustrate how business risks are actually learnable and he creates a framework for preparing yourself to be good at learning about and mitigating risk.

This would be a very good book for seminars on risk management at the college level or in exec education programs at corporations.

Book Description

For thousands of years, the inner teachings of all great religions have expressed the idea that human beings -- each of us - create our own reality. That is, that the life we experience is a function of our own belief system and mental processes. "As ye believe, so shall it be." They have also taught that the life we experience is like a dream, insubstantial.

Now, leading edge science (quantum physics) is proposing the very same notions: that our physical reality is more like "information" - similar to a thought -- than like anything else. And that physical reality consists mostly of empty space. Furthermore, mind-body scientists (neurophysiologists) are learning more about the profound and pervasive affects that our minds have on our physical bodies.

In What the Bleep Do We Know?!, 14 top scientists, theologians and mystics explain "how this all works," as we follow Amanda, an anxious, depressed professional photographer played by Academy Award-winner Marlee Matlin, through her awakening and transformation. The Little Book of BLEEPS captures many of the most enlightening sayings and impacting graphics from the film.

1 out of 5 stars Quantum Junk.......2006-09-09

Very poor attempt by new-agers to link goofy and unprovable [and in most cases unobservable] assertions to Quantum Theory.
Some of the movie commentators and hence contributors to this "book", are way out of their league [and I suspect in a couple of cases their minds as well].
I suggest that they leave pseudo-science to the magicians and illusionists. They know what they are up to at least.
In the final analysis it matters little what one believes, it is what is demonstrable that matters. What is demonstrated/explained by this material? ....Anything you want!

The Little Book of Bleeps: Excerpts from the Award-Winning Movie What the (#$%&) Bleep Do We Know (Purchased on 08/12/2005)
I heard about the low budget movie "What the Bleep Do We Know?" and went to see it in down town Sacramento movie hall. I enjoyed it so much I purchased the film. I tried to talk to my friends about it. I even bought two more films to pass out to my friends. My "flatland" skeptic friends could not believe that I would even want to see such a film. They found everything wrong with it. I felt like Galileo or Copernicus trying to let them know that the sun does not revolve around the earth. I looked at my film at least ten times trying to write down all the words of wisdom emanating from the great thinkers who were scientist and other academics in the film.

Then I found the book "The Little Book of Bleeps" that had all the words I wanted to ponder that were in the film. As I e-mailed more friends about my excitement knowing that "we create our own reality," most of my friends again put the book down by explaining the fallacies of all the great thinkers who were scientist and other academics in the film---But, what do my friends know?

Then I found "Beyond the Bleep" that goes into detail about all the ideas and the thinkers who came up with these ideas. This film "WTBDWK" is about quantum physics, spirituality---and the meaning of life. This ambitious film attempts to answer existential questions such as: What is God? What are emotions? What is the soul? And what we all want to know why are we here?

I was so caught up with quantum physics; I ordered some lectures about quantum physics for the non-scientist from the Teaching Company. That gave me the vocabulary to understand "WTBDWK."

That wasn't enough for me. Amazon.com was advertising the book "The Spiritual Universe, How Quantum Physics Proves The Existence of the Soul." by Fred Alan Wolf, PH.D. one of the scientist in the film. It took me a month to finish the book and now I'm going to read it again. Quantum Physics is mind boggling, but I think it will change the whole direction of science and bring Science into the realm of Spirituality, bring the objective into the subjective. I feel blest that I am moving up the spiritual path intended by the creator. It also proves to me that there is an "Intelligent design."

some of the better quotes that are helpful and too many movie images that don't enlighten. Seems more like a teaser for the movie.

The Review is for the movie version. However please note also, someone named "Fluffy Sausage" copied my review. Anyway a friend recommended the film to me and I found it to be fascinating, thought provoking and enjoyable . I come form an academic science background and so I naturally have to analysis things through critical/analytical eyes. A lot of the suggestions presented in this movie are on the edge of science and therefore are educated ideas/throughts. The idea of consciousness having a link with quantum physics theories would make "pure" academics eyes roll. Putting this aside it is a movie that should be seen by anyone interested in the mind and philosophies of life.

Every once in a while a book or movie or cultural event occurs that causes the collective culture to consider (or re-consider) life as they know it. After 9/11 churches were overflowing as Americans looked for hope and security in Something bigger than themselves. Over time, Americans regained their self-confidence assumptions and life went on. Sometimes an event or a discovery alters our basic perceptions: the earth is round, not flat; the earth rotates around the sun, not vice versa. Scientic discoveries are important because they shape our understanding of the divine. When a discovery counters what we have been led to believe, we are forced to assess how to align two truths.

Blogger This Guy Falls Down (http://marklee.typepad.com/this_guy_falls_down/2005/05/why_the_bleep_s.html) challenges Christians to watch the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know" and be current on books like "The Little Book of Bleeps." He writes, "Because of its popularity, and because of the issues it addresses, this film will shape many people's outlook on science and religion. And that is why it's on my radar. Not unlike The Da Vinci Code, the thoughts put forward here, right or wrong, have the potential of becoming ingrained into the collective conscience."

Book Description

Bullying at School is the definitive book on bully/victim problems in school and on effective ways of counteracting and preventing such problems. On the basis of the author's large-scale studies and other research, it is known that bullying is a serious problem in all societies that have been studied so far, and that more than 15 percent of the school population in primary and secondary/junior high schools are involved, either as bullies or victims. The facts about bullying, its causes and consequences, are presented in clear and straightforward language. The book is a milestone in the study of bullying at school in that it offers a scientifically evaluated intervention program. The results of this extensive research are remarkable:- a reduction of bully/victim problems by 50 percent or more- a considerable drop in antisocial behavior such as vandalism, theft, drunkenness, and truancy- clear improvements in the "social climate" of the classroom and student satisfaction with school life. The book gives practical advice to school principals, teachers, and parents on how to implement a "whole school approach to bullying," and contains a valuable guide to help teachers and parents recognize if a child is being victimized or bullies others. Bullying at School is essential reading for all who are involved with children and young people.

4 out of 5 stars Good data but needs more specific examples.......2002-01-30

I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book.

Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the foundation of modern bullying prevention!.......1999-11-08

This clear, brief, and practical book is based on extensive research and outlines an intervention to prevent bullying. Dr. Olweus's work has become the standard approach to bullying prevention, reflected in such programs as the University of Colorado "Blueprints for Violence Prevention" project ... As a counselor and trainer specializing in bullying prevention, I find this book indispensable, and recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children: What Do We Know?.......2007-08-09

It's a good book, but rather dry in its presentation. However, being primarily a bringing together and summarizing of published research in this topic, it is an invaluable reference for anyone wanting to really know what are the substantiated findings with respect to gifted children's social and emotional development. I bought it to better understand my daughter, and I am glad I did. But if someone is looking for straightforward parenting tips in dealing with these kids, then some other book may be more to the point. Overall, for me, it is an excellent book with some useful info not commonly found elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful Data.......2007-07-23

This book contains a wealth of information about numerous studies done on various facets of gifted education. For those who are data driven (and that certainly is the world we are living in these days) they will find a glut of statistics - many usable and even more of them quotable - to back up theories about what is effective for gifted students. For those trying to come up to speed on gifted education, this offers a crash course in the available research, but as with most books of this nature, it's pretty dry.

2 out of 5 stars Not parent or teacher friendly - even if you're a gifted parent & teacher.......2007-01-26

I was hoping for a research based plain-speaking guide to helping my own highly gifted son. What I found in this book was a dense theory/research based textbook. As a fairly gifted adult and a high school English teacher, I was able to wade through the verbage, but it was no pleasant task. If you're looking for a textbook, this one is fine, but if you want some real-world advice, keep looking.

The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children. What Do We Know? Edited by Maureen Niehart, Sally M. Reis, Nancy M. Robinson, Sidney M. Moon, A Publication of the National Association of Gifted Children, Washington, D.C.: Prufrock Press, Inc., 2002
This publication of the National Association for Gifted Children compiles 24 chapters written by leading researchers of the social-emotional development of gifted children. Chapters explore subjects including perfectionism, underachievement, depression, delinquency, risk and resilience, peer pressure and social acceptance among gifted students. It also addresses specific populations within the community of gifted youth. Categories include the special concerns of girls, of boys, students with learning disabilities or AD/HD, the creatively gifted, and gifted children who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Chapters review and present research relevant to each topic. Authors carefully distinguish fact from fiction regarding the social-emotional and psychological characteristics of gifted children. They stress, for example, that there is little research to suggest that gifted students are psychologically or emotionally vulnerable because of their gifts. However, gifted students may be at risk because of the frequent disparity between their cognitive abilities and their educational program. This book is a comprehensive resource, appropriate for both parents and educators.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for every gifted parent, teacher, & professional!.......2002-12-21

The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children assembles terrific team of well-respected professionals in gifted, and compiles a great set of essays on the social and emotional aspects of growing up gifted in today's world, complete with the research references to back up thier facts. Authors including Neihart, Rogers, Gross, Silverman, Reis, Robinson, and more... the contributors read like a who's who of gifted education today.

Everyone who works with, plays with, and parents gifted children should read this book. Topics include acceleration, the exceptionally gifted, Dabrowski's overexcitabilties, perfectionism, underacheivment, depression (does it really occur more, or less, in the gifted population?). Special populations are not overlooked, including female, male, gay, lesbian and bi-sexual, african-american, gifted / learning disabled and gifted / ADHD students. The book concludes with topics of parenting, counseling, and career counseling for gifted students.

With all the research-based information, the Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children is still readable and enjoyable. And it's FULL of research-proven techniques and strategies for dealing with the social and emotional aspects of growing up as a gifted child.

This book should be read by everyone in education, gifted, or parenting a gifted child!

Book Description

World War I has been called "the war to end all wars", the first time combatants were mobilized on a massive scale to ruthlessly destroy an enemy. But as David Bell argues in this tour de force of interpretive history, the Great War was not, in fact, the first total war. For this, we need to travel back to the era of muskets and sailing ships, to the age of Napoleon. According to Bell, it was then that warfare was transformed into the hideous spectacle that seems ever present today. Indeed, nearly every modern aspect of war took root in that time: conscription, unconditional surrender, total disregard for the rules of combat, mobilization of civilians, guerrilla warfare, and the perverse notion of war fought for the sake of peace. The revolutionaries were leading "the last crusade for universal liberty." A war for such stakes could only be apocalyptic - and terribly bloody. With a historian's keen insight and a journalist's flair for detail, Bell brings this period to life while keeping an eye on our own "war of liberation" in Iraq. The parallels are astonishing, making this vivid narrative history as timely and important as it is unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars An Intellectual History of the Napoleonic Wars.......2007-02-28

We have grown accustomed to viewing the World Wars of the 20th century as the first total wars in modern history, for they required the total mobilization and militarization of the societies involved. Their accompanying ideologies, fascism and communism, were appropriately called totalitarian since they left no aspect of society unaffected. Now historian David A Bell has written a new and different history of the Napoleonic Wars (1792 - 1815) arguing that they were in fact the first total wars.

In his introduction, Bell tells us that he is borrowing techniques from intellectual history to write a military history. Traditionally military historians have restricted themselves to accounts of battlefield tactics and weapon systems. Bell is attempting to go further in showing that the ideals of the Enlightenment played a role in what he calls the first total war. He believes that the French Revolution - the apotheosis of the Enlightenment - radicalized people's ideas about how and why wars should be fought.

During the time of the ancien regime - which is Bell's main standard of comparison - wars were limited and short-lived. They were fought according to established rules and usually to defend the honor of this or that aristocrat; in fact, many times the armies were made up of mercenaries. The philosophes of the Enlightenment such as Kant, Diderot, d'Alembert, and the Marquis de Condorcet were certain that with the advent of reason wars would be a thing of the past. As late as 1790 Robespierre was declaring in the Assembly that the French nation had no desire to engage in war, that to invade another country and make it adopt their laws and constitution was the furthest thing from their minds.

Much changed in two years. By 1792 there was growing opposition to the revolutionary government in Paris, especially in Vendee. The government decided to put down this rebellion with a degree of brutality not seen before. They conducted a scorched-earth policy that spared no one. They made no distinction between combattants and non-combattants. The dogs of war had been unleashed to save the revolution and to obliterate any dissent.

Bell explores the nature of total war and how it feeds on itself. Once the military becomes front and center of the government, war becomes unstoppable. All of the nations resources and efforts went to the Grand Armee to create an empire in places as far as Egypt and Russia.

In his retelling of the Spanish campaign, Bell attempts to draw a parallel with America's intervention in Iraq. To an extent there are some parallels. Napoleon claimed to be bringing Enlightenment ideals and reform to Spain, yet the insurgency would have none of it. This, however, is a distraction from Bell's thesis; whatever else it is doing in Iraq, America is not conducting a total war. This is a very restrained and cautious use of military power. In fact, Napoleon's excursion into Spain was somewhat cautious to be called total war.

When contrasted with what transpired in the preceding century and what the philosophes predicted, the Napoleonic Wars were barbaric and total, but it is still not clear how they were different from, say, the Mongol invasions of the Middle Ages or the military expeditions of Alexander the Great. Its seems that the so-called total wars of Napoleon have been done before. The total mobilization of people and resources is as old as human history. Mutual and absolute hatred for the enemy is a timeless emotion. Bell's argument that hell hath no fury like a citzen's army is reminiscent of Victor Davis Hanson's thesis in Carnage and Culture, and it is as unconvincing.

Bell's book provides much food for thought on how quickly circumstances can change from permanent peace to permanent war without pinpointing exactly what triggers the change. Paranoia, perceived threat, and survival are all factors in the devolution of high ideals to base hostility. And why armies of citizens driven by Enlightenment ideals fight more effectively than previous armies is still unanswered. However, Bell makes a robust effort with this original work.

1 out of 5 stars Tosh.......2007-02-05

David A. Bell operates by trying to sneak ridiculous analogies past his readers, then treating them as true by definition. And what a convincing conclusion: dreaming of peace causes modern wars; if we all just accepted the necessity of war, then we'd be better off.

4 out of 5 stars "No one likes armed missionaries".......2007-01-21

There is a hilarious and biting excerpt from Bell's analysis of the French Revolution. During one of the debates in the Assembly, it was suggested that if the French armies were to invade their neighbours, overthrow the benighted royalist regimes, and offer the glories of representative democracy, then the peoples of those countries would greet the French with gratitude. Bell recounts that Maximilian Robespierre gave a cynical but accurate rejoinder, "No one likes armed missionaries". Bell suggests that Robespierre showed better understanding of practical sociology than some current leaders. Though the latter were left unspecified, he was clearly referring to George Bush and the liberation of Iraq. For some reason, the Iraqis don't seem very grateful to Americans!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting but flawed thesis.......2007-01-06

David Bell has written an interesting but somewhat flawed book which states that the Napoleonic Wars was the first total war in European history. According to Bell the intellectual origins of the Napoleanic wars occurred with the writings of elightenment philosophers who wanted to go back to the Classical period in which all the citizens of the republic were part of the army. This theory about the armed republic became reality during the French revolution in which mass conscription took place. As a result of the Napoleonic wars, accroding to Bell, aristocrats soon lost their place with the French army and later in the nineteenth century with other Eurpean armies. As a result classes that taught aristcratic values for army officers were soon replaced by those that stressed technical skills. Also every citizen was judged a combatant and this led to massacres committed by French forces during the Vendee and in Spain and Italy. The are two main weaknesses in Bell's case that the Napoleonic Wars was the first truly modern war in history. The first is Bell's belief that aristocrats and royals were eliminated from the army but this was not the case with the German army in the First World War which included the Bavarian Prince Ruppert as a commander of the main German armies and the Tsarist army of the same time period who had Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich and Tsar Nicholas II as head of the army. Also the Napoleonic wars as being a precursor to the atrocities committed during the two world wars seems to be flawed in that the genocides that occurred in the first half of the twentieth century were based on the physical elimination of class and ethinc groups unlike the massacres in Spain,France, and Italy in the early nineteenth century. Despite these major flaws this book is still an interesting book to read.
