Book Description

Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems is a complete and accessible account of the theoretical foundations and computational methods that underlie plausible reasoning under uncertainty. The author provides a coherent explication of probability as a language for reasoning with partial belief and offers a unifying perspective on other AI approaches to uncertainty, such as the Dempster-Shafer formalism, truth maintenance systems, and nonmonotonic logic.

The author distinguishes syntactic and semantic approaches to uncertainty--and offers techniques, based on belief networks, that provide a mechanism for making semantics-based systems operational. Specifically, network-propagation techniques serve as a mechanism for combining the theoretical coherence of probability theory with modern demands of reasoning-systems technology: modular declarative inputs, conceptually meaningful inferences, and parallel distributed computation. Application areas include diagnosis, forecasting, image interpretation, multi-sensor fusion, decision support systems, plan recognition, planning, speech recognition--in short, almost every task requiring that conclusions be drawn from uncertain clues and incomplete information.

Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems will be of special interest to scholars and researchers in AI, decision theory, statistics, logic, philosophy, cognitive psychology, and the management sciences. Professionals in the areas of knowledge-based systems, operations research, engineering, and statistics will find theoretical and computational tools of immediate practical use. The book can also be used as an excellent text for graduate-level courses in AI, operations research, or applied probability.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to the field.......2007-06-28

Recently I needed to learn the principles of Bayesian networks quickly, so I bought three books: this one by Pearl, "Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" by Bishop, and "Bayesian Artificial Intelligence" by Korb and Nicholson. Each has a very different audience and different set of strengths.

The Bishop book would probably be a great text for a serious student with a year to spend learning the theory of machine learning. But I found it a bit too concise, with a bias towards an "algebraic" description rather than a "geometric" one (my preference). I wound up spending a lot of time trying to translate equations into mental pictures in order to grasp the concepts. Too much work, so I dropped this after a couple of days.

Next I tackled the Korb and Nicholson book. This one's aimed at the application engineer who wants to get a network up and running quickly, and is not too concerned about how it works. I've been in that position many times in my career, and have always welcomed books like this for giving me a quick start into a new field. But this time I needed to really understand how Bayesian networks worked, and for this the Korb and Nicholson book is not great. In the first 9 pages of chapter 3 they try to explain the belief propagation algorithm, but their hearts just weren't it in--I found their explanation to be unintelligible. (I suspect most readers just skim this to get to the applications.) So after several days of struggling and getting nowhere, I tossed this aside as well.

The Pearl book was the only left; I put it off to last since I was initially somewhat intimidated by it. After all, this is one of the books that kicked off the "Bayesian revolution," so I was fearing a foundational math book consisting of one dry theorem after another. Not so! Although you have to read 174 pages to get through the belief propagation algorithm for trees, this took far less time than reading the first 62 pages of Korb and Nicholson, which cover roughly the same ground. The reason: Pearl is a gifted teacher and writer. His explanations are a series of baby steps, leaving nothing out, never assuming the reader will make "obvious" inferences, and supplying motivation every step of the way. Although he doesn't have a lot of figures in the book, the ones he does have are excellent, and by the time I hit page 175, I had a clear picture in my head of not just how it all worked, but why it worked. In fact, after just two days of reading, I was able to implement the belief propagation algorithm in software in an afternoon (I tested the software with examples from the Korb and Nicholson book, so that book was ultimately useful). Pearl made the subject seem almost obvious. If you are looking for a book to help you get canned Bayesian software up and running for an application quickly, this is not it. But if you want to really understand how these things work, and don't have a lot of time available, I cannot imagine a better book than this.

5 out of 5 stars a classic book.......2007-05-10

Pearl's book is a classic in artificial intelligence. Many of his ideas are still being studied today.

1 out of 5 stars To reiterate moussie99, Not so much.......2006-04-20

I've read the first half of this book twice now (once for a class, once to pass M.S. test). The book is terrible. There are virtually no examples to help you learn how to construct a Bayesian network. I'm serious. Virtually the only example is actually a homework question at the end of a chapter and the question is wrong!!! (there are dependcies in the table given for the joint distribution, but the acyclic graph shows them as independencies).

This book was written in defense of Bayesian Networks as a "Reasonable" graphical model. At the time, perhaps it was needed, but today we accept them as useful and move on unless we are trying to model medical diagnosis. For this reason the book is written with proofs where there should be examples (and perhaps references to an appendix). Please don't prove to me that Bayesian networks are reasonable, show me how they are useful!

To reiterate, you will learn how to create and use Bayesian networks from somewhere else, even if you buy this book.

Oh, and my FAVORITE example is the Prisoner's Paradox. He uses this example to show relationships that should be representable in a graphical model. But the whole point of the paradox is that humans are VERY bad at thinking in this manner. Though Pearl makes general claims as to the similarity between Bayesian Networks and the way humans think (doctors performing medical diagnosis is not a normal human task!), this example shows the opposite. It is called a paradox because it is unintuitive, weakening claims as to the likeness of Bayesian Networks to human thought.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant Discussion On Probabilistic Reasoning And Uncertainty.......2005-12-13

Pearl's "Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems" is elegantly done seminal work on uncertainty, probabilistic reasoning and all things related inference. As the author says, "This book is a culmination of an investigation into the applicability of probabilistic methods to task requiring automated reasoning under uncertainty", it covers topics on all level i.e. basic ideas, technical and substantive discussions and advanced research. However, my impression of book's target audiences is researchers and readers with a advance understanding of these topics.

"Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems" provides very comprehensive and detailed discussion on topics like why uncertainty is important, probabilistic reasoning for query answering system, Markov and Bayesian networks etc; It goes beyond the text and into philosophical discussion as well, for instance it talks about what Bayesian rule's mathematical representation actually mean. The topic "Learning structures from data" is a good discussion of belief networks. As an advance text book, it's equipped with theorem proofs, exercises but not very many examples which disappoints. The book covers default logic very well; topics like semantics for default reasoning, casualty modularity and tree structures, evidential reasoning in taxonomic hierarchies, decision analysis, and autonomous propagation as a computational paradigm are some of the well discussed ones. I particularly enjoyed the Bayesian vs. Dempster-Shafer formulism, probabilistic treatment of the Yale shooting problem and dialogue between logicist and probablist, the concluding discussion.

I'd recommend this book as a secondary resource for advance researchers in the field of probability and uncertainty.

1 out of 5 stars Not so much.......2003-04-09

I used this text in addtition to a few others for a course in probablistic reasoning (Bayes nets, etc.) and found that it was very unhelpful. The explanations were very poor and many parts were difficult to read. Also, there weren't very many examples and those that were provided were not very detailed. If you're looking for a text to learn probabilistic reasoning I would suggest trying a different book. Pearl's book could be useful as a 2nd or 3rd reference but not for the primary text. 2 thumbs down.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must buy for all Telecom Engineers working on CAMEL.......2007-08-24

Reading CAMEL from the specs has always been a nightmare for me with very basic understanding of IN, but after going through the book all my fundas have become clear and now I am able to relate everything from the Specs. This book is the only book I could find on this topic and author has very clearly explained the topic starting from scratch.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must-read for CAMEL'ers.......2007-01-12

By far the best book i have come across which attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of CAMEL's origins, CAMEL's present and future roles. Author's excellent narrative skills coupled with easy-to-follow logical flow makes this a personal favourite. Its a must-have for folks who want to learn CAMEL networks or those who want to refresh their knowledge about CAMEL networks or those who want to augment gaps in their understanding of CAMEL networks. The book, in my humble opinion, has both, depth and breadth... a very rare quality in itself...

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-12-16

This book appears to completely omit the possibility of direct gsmSCF to gsmSRF communication, This is especially serious when this is the first gsmSRF scenario discussed and diagrammed by other authors and the definitive 3GPP TS 03.78 & 3G TS 29.078 standards. This interface, present in CAMEL from phase 2, is being used in the new and interesting CAMEL services such as CRBT. This is a basic and serious omission and has undermined my faith in the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book about CAMEL.......2006-07-13

This book is a must read for anyone planning and/or developing CAMEL based applications. I recommend it to everyone I know that works within SS7/IN/WIN/CAMEL. It is a great reference and guide to more information that may be found within the standards.

    Book Description

This book sets out a vision of â€~intelligent spaces’ and describes the progress that has been made towards realisation. The context for Intelligent Spaces (or iSpaces) is the world where ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and sensor systems disappear as they become embedded into physical objects and the spaces in which we live, work and play. The ultimate vision is that this embedded technology provides us with intelligent and contextually relevant support, augmenting our lives and experience of the physical world in a benign and non-intrusive manner.

The ultimate vision is challenging, there are technical barriers, especially in the integration of complex systems and in the creation of intelligent software, as well as social and economic barriers.

This book explores what is technically possible and what users will need for the future. Academic and industrial researchers in Computer Science, IT and Communications, as well as practitioners will find this key reading as it delivers practical and implementable current research.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars mundane descriptions.......2007-01-31

I read this book hoping for some truly innovative descriptions of current and future work in this field of iSpaces. The chapters are mostly routine accounts. Nothing here is really strikingly original. Not that the narratives are wrong. It's just that, perhaps depending on your prior knowledge of this field, there's nothing here that is not a standard extrapolation of known ideas.

RFID tags get the most mention across the chapters. Possibly because this is the subject of serious industry efforts. The main deployment is currently to improve supply chain management. Which is uncontroversial. What is potentially more divisive appears to be the use of the tags for items that are sold to the end user, and the continuing use of these tags after sale, perhaps to track user habits. An unresolved issue.

The index is somewhat rudimentary. Jini and JXTA are mentioned in the text, but omitted from the index, for example.

    4 out of 5 stars A very informative book.......2007-01-13

Being an article compilation, this book doesn't go beyond some equations and applications of the ISpaces, it is an excellent book for those who are looking a easy introduction in this subject.

        Book Description

The vision of researchers to create smart environments through the deployment of thousands of sensors, each with a short range wireless communications channel and capable of detecting ambient conditions such as temperature, movement, sound, light, or the presence of certain objects is becoming a reality. With the emergence of high-speed networks and with their increased computational capabilities, Distributed Sensor Networks (DSN) have a wide range of real-time applications in aerospace, automation, defense, medical imaging, robotics, and weather prediction. Over the past several years, scientists, engineers, and researchers in a multitude of disciplines have been clamoring for more detailed information without much success. Until now, in fact, this evolving technology was so new and proprietary that information has been available only in scattered articles or basic books. Distributed Sensor Networks is a complete, self-contained book that introduces background theory and applications of this revolutionary new technology. It contains essential background on wireless networks, signal processing, and self-organizing systems. This volume encompasses a number of recurring themes like multidimensional data structures, reasoning with uncertainty, system dependability, and the use of metaheuristics. With over 500 illustrations and over 1,000 pages of in depth information, Distributed Sensor Networks is both an excellent introduction to the field and a complete reference source. With contributions from leading experts, virtually every major topic on 'Smart Dust' is examined. This volume promises to become the definitive guide to understanding this far-reaching technology for years to come, opening frontiers in research and applications.

The title of this impressive book is somewhat oblique. What the author really offers is an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI) programming using examples that also teach you Java. Watson begins with a short introduction to artificial intelligence, dividing AI systems into two major categories: symbol-processing systems and neural networks. Examples of each are amply covered in the course of the book.

The first section describes the development of the Java class libraries that will serve as building blocks when you construct your applications. These libraries include a portable user interface class, flexible frame data structures, and neural-network and genetic-algorithm simulation classes. Chapters on natural language processing and AI agents show you how to use these techniques to automate tasks such as e-mail processing and gathering information from the Web.

Once you've created these basic tools, Watson shows you how to use them to build applications. His examples include a scrolling arcade game, a real-time handwriting recognition program, a distributed natural language processing system that can answer questions about history, and a Java-based data collection agent for the Internet. The author assumes that you know Java programming basics, although he provides a short tutorial in an appendix that will be helpful if you're coming to Java from C or C++. The bundled CD-ROM contains the source code for all projects in the book.

          Book Description

Internet tools and applications frequently use artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to enable special features and reduce development time. This book allows you to apply these powerful AI design techniques to your Java programming. Focusing on intelligent systems, it provides the introductory AI material that Java programmers need to create Internet and Intranet applications including on-line games, search tools, and data collection
tools. A variety of detailed examples are provided to illustrate how these applications are used in real-world software projects, and to guide you in developing applications of your own.

          * AI concepts are explained in detail making the book accessible to any Java programmer.
          * An accompanying CD-ROM lets readers experiment with source code for the Java classes developed in the book. The CD-ROM includes many immediately useful Java class libraries and four complete applications that use the Java class libraries.
          * Complete example programs cover a range of applications including an arcade style game, a handwriting recognition system, a system that answers questions about ancient history, and an information retrieval application.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible - ZERO didactic value.......2000-11-19

This book fails miserably at explaining anything. The examples dissuaded me to purchase it only to find out that simple explanations about how it AI works are nowhere to be found (there is however superfluous and distracting commentary on simple Java things like Runnable, Applets, there's even networking code for a POP mail client which really ought to be delegated to support code outside from the book's topic). The examples themselves typically have no comments, even if they are several pages long. Later chapters provide more insight, however when you are looking to learn something, the "simpler" topics are glossed over.

The Java code also leaves a lot to be desired, it doesn't follow standard java naming conventions for instance variables and method names and the style is so varied and terrible (sometimes instance variables are declared at the top, sometimes at the bottom) that reading the code becomes a chore (and all that without commentary.

Some web pages on the net provide more useful information.

2 out of 5 stars Lousy introduction to AI.......2000-05-05

"Intelligent Java Applications" was my first introduction to neural networks and AI in general, when I bought the book a couple of years ago. It took an undergraduate neural modeling class at an Ivy League university before I appreciated what a lousy introduction to neural networks this book actually is. Watson glosses over all of the theoretical basis of neural networks, and does an inadequate job of explaining just what a neural network is and how it works. The author could have easily explained (in a paragraph) what a linear associator is, before launching into the more convoluted, multiple-layer back-prop algorithm that is presented in the book. If you want a real book on neural networks (along with neurophysiological, theoretical, and historical developments), I highly recommend "Introduction to Neural Networks" by James Anderson.

Watson also wastes paper by baby-stepping the reader through some useless GUI and networking packages that makes his code presentable (when run) but much more difficult to decipher. A useful AI tutorial would not be so tied to a specific language. Alas, I have a feeling that the Java reference, as well as the "For the Internet and Intranets" subtitle was a clever bait-and-switch tactic to sell more copies of this book. If you're interested in the function of AI rather than the theory (if, suppose, you're progamming a game), then this book might be useful. But I have a feeling that better resources exist if this is your avenue of interest.

I have not, as of yet, done much course-based or indepenent research on expert systems, genetic algorithms, character recognition, natural language processing, or any of the other topics that are covered in this book. But I have a feeling that, if I do, I'll find the rest of Watson's material similarly lacking.

          1 out of 5 stars a bluff.......2000-01-07

          a bluff

It shoulnd't take that much plain common sense for the author to understand that he could have done a decent job updating the code contained in the book, and tat its installation work. I wonder what is the big deal about royalties and stuff the author mentioned in relation to it.

Apparently this book was out of press 1997. On page 343 "Using the CD-ROM" the author claims to have tested the code using the JDK 1.0 (really) and JDK 1.1. THe author also claims to keep code updates on his Web site, but then when you go there you find that, as he adjectively specifies, "some" code has been updated for Java 1.2 and Java 1.3, along with some poetic remarks like "code which age will be noticed" or something like that.

I even pondered about cleaning myself the whole code and sending it to the author, but it is not really worthy, you can find better Java code online about almost each of the chapters. There were only some stuff regarding wand writing mapping that you could go over in a Barnes and Nobel session.

If you are into the AI thing, read the procedings and specialized books. I think, and I am highly interested in the topic from a semiotic perspective myself, AI, is sort of science fiction, hype, ..., it hasn't evoled into something sensical yet. Big blue beating Kasparov isn't AI yet. Right on the first page of the introduction the author says that one of the problems AI tries to solve is the generation of " Creative thoughts exemplified by new and remarkable theorems in MAthematics... and novel theories in other sciences ..."

Sir, this is a core semantic problem not a sintactic one, you operate machines, design models, transmit data, etc. on a sintactic level by means of a physical carrier. I wonder what you are talking about there.

I returned the book whithin hours thinking, "If the author would at least have taken care of the code?"

5 out of 5 stars Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell.......1998-02-15

I never thought a book could cover so much ground on a such complex topic as Artificial Intelligence - and still be hands on and compact. The book is at the same time a great teach in programming with Java. Intelligent Applications for the Internet and Intranet is certainly an enjoyable book that you as a programmer can grow with. //Thomas Westergård

As existing carriers hire additional engineers and new telecommunications companies get underway, there's ever-increasing demand for people who know about Intelligent Network (IN) operations. Wireless Intelligent Networking explains how the IN works (especially in the United States), particularly the network's means of interacting with mobile communications systems. The book was written by working telecoms engineers, and though it is carefully organized (it's usually pretty easy to find a section on the protocol or other mechanism that interests you, for example), it's a little hard to decode on the first pass because of the nature of the subject. Advice to the reader: have specifications documents (relevant ones are listed in the endnotes) on hand as you read so that you can compare two presentations of the same facts and thus understand more quickly.

Discussion on the protocols that come into play during mobile interaction with the IN includes a fantastic level of detail. To cite one example, the different approaches to Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) taken by IS-764 and IS-771 are explored, and each specification is further explained via a chart that details the flow of messages between parties. Similarly excellent documentation appears for all applicable protocols, established and emerging. The business issues associated with wireless IN are also discussed. The material is good, but for a book-length treatment of emerging telecoms technologies and the industry surrounding them, read Telecommunications Convergence. --David Wall

5 out of 5 stars An excellent general treatment of WIN........2001-10-16

The telecommunications industry needs a lot of standards and
detailed information for true inter-operability. So, no book
is going to be perfect in its coverage of the material - there
            is simply too much information.

Having said that, I find this book to be an excellent way to
understand the issues associated with WIN. It provides the basis
for further study and points people in the right direction for
            increasing their knowledge.

I use this book as a basic reference and recommend it highly.
You will not go wrong reading this book - whether you are a
wireless telecom professional (which I am) or not.

            5 out of 5 stars An excellent multi-disciplinary text.......2001-07-01

The book succeeds in presenting an inherently complex and multi-disciplinary subject in a clear manner with sufficient references to allow further study as needed.

The book provides a broad view of wireless networking, including financial, market, and technical views. The technical information is well organized and presented from more than one perspective. Rather than presenting volumes of minute details, architectural principals are introduced and illuminated.

This is one of the outstanding technical books that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it to experienced hands in the fields of wireless or wireline voice networks.

I would also recommend it to beginners with the following cavaet: this book plumbs some fairly deep waters, and does not delve too deeply into the related fields that are the building blocks of Wireless Intellegent Networking. SS7, AIN, PSTN architecture, and mobility management are all presented, but having some previous background (or somebody handy who can fill in details) would be a big help.
