4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to SEM.......2007-01-10

Kline's book provides a very readable introduction to and explanation of structural equation modeling. The book does not include statistical proofs, so it would not serve well as an advanced text. But if you are looking for a book that explains what SEM is and how it fits within the larger framework of inferential statistics, I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good .......2007-08-06

More detailed explanation of every subject discussed. Nothing was assummed. The appendix include vital information for new SAS users.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding.......2007-05-23

This is the single best statistics text I've ever read. It's extremely easy to follow, very practical, and gives outstanding examples. Everything is so clearly described in the book that one might call it Factor analysis and SEM for Dummies. I only wish that the book covered nonrecursive SEM models.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2006-11-03

Very easy to read. Examples are simple and effective. The book explains the statistical concepts as well as the SAS programming tricks. In fact, the book provides complete code - you will be able to get good amount of analysis done just by copying that code. However, you also need to buy the "The Little SAS Book" if you never used SAS before.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-05-01

This outstanding book was one of the mainstays for my Ph.D. dissertation. It explain factor analysis and SEM techniques in a clear and effective way, with an hands-on approach that guides the reader during all the data analysis and result interpretation phases.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for this book.......2002-10-21

I really needed this for my dissertation. As a computer scientist who is using statistically-based data mining techniques in my PhD dissertation, I needed a good "Quick Course" in factor analysis. More important than just "what is factor analysis", I needed to know how to implement my ideas in SAS. This book did the trick. Now let's hope my advisors think so. :)

Book Description

This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.

Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by:
*a statement of the hypothesis being tested;
*a schematic representation of the model under study;
*the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus;
*a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files;
*a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; and
*the published reference from which each application was drawn.

5 out of 5 stars Structural Equation Modeling With AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming (Multivariate Applications Series).......2007-02-21

Great book, easy to read. It goes well as a companion book about SEM with a more mathematically heavy text. The author makes using AMOS easy! I've already shown my Professor something about AMOS he didn't know!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-01-29

If you are looking for a good resource on learning how to use AMOS for structural equation modeling, this is definitely the book. It is easy to understand and well laid out. Well recommended, especially for teaching SEM to students.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful if familiar w/stats + new to sem.......2001-08-07

This book is a wonderful guide to understanding a good range of basics about sem, getting models to work with Amos, and interpreting your output. You will need to be familiar with one of the stats packages that Amos is compatible with. Very much user-friendly in this complicated topic. All of the statistically-related and theory-related aspects are well-referenced, so you can find sources to reference for different aspects of sem. A great book to fill the gap between the Amos user's manual and books on sem in general. (contact Erlbaum about educ pricng.)

Book Description

This book illustrates the ease with which various features of LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 can be implemented in addressing research questions that lend themselves to SEM. Its purpose is threefold: (a) to present a nonmathmatical introduction to basic concepts associated with SEM, (b) to demonstrate basic applications of SEM using both the DOS and Windows versions of LISREL 8, as well as both the LISREL and SIMPLIS lexicons, and (c) to highlight particular features of the LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 progams that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.

This book is intended neither as a text on the topic of SEM, nor as a comprehensive review of the many statistical funcitons available in the LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 programs. Rather, the intent is to provide a practical guide to SEM using the LISREL approach. As such, the reader is "walked through" a diversity of SEM applications that include both factor analytic and full latent variable models, as well as a variety of data management procedures.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Guide.......2006-03-03

This book lays out the basics of SEM in an understandable way. Doesn't address EVERY issue, but then again it's very accessible and application-oriented, with language not too highly techinical (in relation to other SEM texts).

5 out of 5 stars easy to follow.......2005-07-08

This is quite easy to follow for beginners but you def. need a good stats background to do so!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand; needs a second edition.......2004-10-04

No one expects statistics to be easy reading, especially when it concerns complicated models such as structural equation modeling (SEM). Nevertheless, this book manages to do just that.

Schumacker and Lomax have successfully put together a guide that explains to beginners (like myself) in simple terms how the whole thing works. As with most books that treat complex models, some basic knowledge of statistics is preferable before you begin to read it. But if your statistics is rusty and you have only vague impressions of probability sketches in your memory, fear not! Schumacker and Lomax are kind to us poor souls, and begin by introducing some basics in chapter 1 to prod your memory: terminology, variable scales, how to treat missing data, outliers and normality. And in chapter 2, they discuss correlation and covariance.

Before talking about structural equation models, Schumacker and Lomax dedicate chapter 3 to a number of statistical methods on which SEM is built. This chapter gives a basic overview of regression, path analysis and factor analysis. The review of these methods helps you to understand SEM better later on. They also provide an excellent understanding of the methods, in case you have not used them before or it's been a while ...

The rest of the guide covers SEM: how to develop and measure a model (chapters 4 and 5), how the model parameters are estimated and how you can check for reliability and validity (chapter 6), and checking for goodness of fit of your model (chapter 7).

In chapter 8, you are shown some examples of computer outputs by two software packages that can conduct SEM, EQS5 and LISREL8-SIMPLIS.

Chapter 9 goes into more detail on models and diagrams (regression, analysis of covariance, path, measurement and structural models). For those that feel by this point that they've gained enough experience, advanced topics such as cross validation, simulation, bootstrap and jacknife methods as well as multiple same and interaction models are covered in chapter 10. And for the super-keen, the technical bits are covered in chapter 11 (health warning: you better be up to speed on matrix algebra).

The great thing about this book is that you most likely will be able to run models and interpret results by chapter 7, and you don't need to go into the nitty-gritty if you don't want to. On the other hand, the details are there if you need them. In essence, the authors start at the beginning, building up slowly until you are able to handle a basic model, before going into more complex issues.

One drawback, I have found, is that this book was published in 1996. That's nearly a decade ago, and (fortunately) computer power and statistical modeling has come a long way since then. The authors, for example, are convinced that WordPerfect is the software of choice for word processing and that at some point in the future it would be possible to copy and paste diagrams into a word processing program. We've come a long way since then. Today, many SEM packages exist that are much more user friendly than some of the older stodgy packages that require you to enter data in a very specific way and interpret results by going through reams of data output. As such, the authors (or publishers) probably ought to update it with a second edition.

Nevertheless, the strength of the book lies in its guidance and explanatory power. And even if you use a different package, you can skim through the data outputs they use, and focus on your model, how to construct it, and of what pitfalls to beware.

I highly recommend this for anyone starting on SEM - your modeling days will be much happier with this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Good for a first course........2002-04-03

Schumacker and Lomax make for a good first course in SEM. Although they are somewhat less technical than Bollen (1989), they are a little more up-to-date, and very good reading for a beginning student of SEM. I found the sections on confirmatory factor analysis and identification very useful.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......1999-09-03

This is a very good book about SEM for the beginners and advanced. The book gives a clear and concise principles and examples about SEM. This book definitely enables the readers clearly understand the subject.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unifying, but conceptually challenging.......2007-07-05

The authors have provided a wonderful resource that brings different statistical methods developed in parallel disciplines under one cover. It does, however, present challenging material and is not for the faint of heart. For statisticians or quantitative social/behavioral scientists, this book is an enlightening addition to one's library.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage.......2007-03-26

This book provides well-written, comprehensive coverage of latent variable modeling. Suitable for a masters level (or preferably, a Ph.D.) statistician. Not suitable for someone with a few intro stat courses. Presents multilevel, longitudinal and structural equation modeling and factor analysis using a unified framework, which is both a help (better insights, easier to extend conceptually) and a hindrance (complex when one first tries to understand it). Includes many examples, which makes it much easier to apply these techniques to real life data analysis problems. Practically an encyclopedia of statistical models.

Book Description

A highly readable introduction, Using LISREL for Structural Equation Modeling is for researchers and graduate students in the social sciences who require structural equation modeling techniques to answer substantive research questions. Author E. Kevin Kelloway provides an overview of structural equation modeling including the theory and logic of structural equation models (SEMs), assessing the "fit" of SEMs to the data, and implementation of SEMs in the LISREL environment. Specific applications of SEMs are considered including confirmatory factor analysis, observed variable path analysis, and latent variable path analysis. A sample application including the source code, printout, and results section is presented for each type of analysis. Tricks of the trade for structural equation modeling are presented including the use of single indicator latent variable and reducing the cognitive complexity of models.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but intorductory overview.......2001-05-16

This is a good beginner's guide to SEM and LISREL. The author explains the concepts in a very understandable manner. Although I bought this book two years back, I still refer back to it occasionally. I would highly recommend this to someone who is just starting out with SEM. But more advanced users will be a little disappointed because it stops at the basics. Two notes of warning are in order: (1) this book does NOT discuss the visual interface that LISREL now has, and (2) SPSS now supports AMOS and has dropped LISREL support.

4 out of 5 stars Not just about LISREL.......1999-05-25

In teaching structural equation modeling in a doctoral-level graduate class, I found Kelloway's book one of the most useful resources. Despite its title, the book is not only about LISREL. The initial chapters provide an excellent overview of the science (and art) of structural equation modeling. Kelloway provides probably a better summary than most other books on the topic.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy guide to non-specialists.......1999-02-20

If your goal is to use LISREL and apply structural equation modeling to your own work, this is the book for you. Goes over the model and the software in enough detail to handle most of the problems my stats students see, and is clearly written and easy to follow.

Book Description

In this book, authors Tenko Raykov and George A. Marcoulides introduce students to the basics of structural equation modeling (SEM) through a conceptual, nonmathematical approach. For ease of understanding, the few mathematical formulas presented are used in a conceptual or illustrative nature, rather than a computational one. Featuring examples from EQS, LISREL, and Mplus, A First Course in Structural Equation Modeling is an excellent beginner’s guide to learning how to set up input files to fit the most commonly used types of structural equation models with these programs. The basic ideas and methods for conducting SEM are independent of any particular software.

Highlights of the second edition include:
* review of latent change (growth) analysis models at an introductory level;
*coverage of the popular Mplus program;
*updated examples of LISREL and EQS; and
*a CD that contains all of the text’s LISREL, EQS, and Mplus examples.

A First Course in Structural Equation Modeling is intended as an introductory book for students and researchers in psychology, education, business, medicine, and other applied social, behavioral, and health sciences with limited or no previous exposure to SEM. A prerequisite of basic statistics through regression analysis is recommended. The book frequently draws parallels between SEM and regression, making this prior knowledge helpful.

easy to understand and follow. only book i've seen that describes using MPlus software. Wish authors would write a Second Course in SEM and use more complex, realistic examples.

Book Description

With the availability of software programs such as LISREL, EQS, and AMOS modeling techniques have become a popular tool for formalized presentation of the hypothesized relationships underlying correlational research and for testing the plausibility of hypothesizing for a particular data set. The popularity of these techniques, however, has often led to misunderstandings of them, particularly by students being exposed to them for the first time. Through the use of careful narrative explanation, Basics of Structural Equation Modeling describes the logic underlying structural equation modeling (SEM) approaches, describes how SEM approaches relate to techniques like regression and factor analysis, analyzes the strengths and shortcomings of SEM as compared to alternative methodologies, and explores the various methodologies for analyzing structural equation data.

2 out of 5 stars If really interested in SEM, do not buy this book........2003-05-09

I have just browsed through "Basics of Structural Equation Modeling." Quite frankly, I am very disappointed. The title implies the book is concerned with SEM; however, SEM is actually addressed from Chapter 8 on, as explicitly stated by the author in the first paragraph on page 178: "This chapter presents the basics of latent variable SEM." Pages 29-173 (61% of the book) is spent addressing path analysis, with one chapter addressing factor analysis. Pages 177-270 (39% of the book) is spent addressing SEM. If I had wanted to buy a book on path analysis, I would have bought a book on path analysis!

5 out of 5 stars great book for those who find McArdle/Loehlin tough reading.......2003-04-22

I'm a doctoral student in a longitudinal data analysis class and have really appreciated this book. I don't have the extensive stats background of some of my peers, and this book is very helpful as it explains matrix algebra, latent variable SEM etc. in a way I can understand. If you are struggling with reading the "classics" in this field, you want this book. (Of course, you do need some background in stats...at least thru multiple regression. It doesn't make SEM so easy that you don't need that!)

5 out of 5 stars Whatta book!.......2000-06-27

I'm working on my Ph.D. using SEM. This book was very, very helpful. In fact out of about 20 books that I used, this was the most simple and easy to understand.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars simple and useful for beginners.......2000-05-17

It treats concepts that are usually quite hard to understand in a simple manner. Especially useful if you have some minimal background knowledge of: causal modeling, regression and factor analytic techniques. Otherwise, you risk to slide over some chapters without getting everything... Those who plan to use LISREL will have an advantage, since most examples are done with this software (but with Amos it shouldn't pose a problem to translate). Still, very worth.
