A Good Starting Point.......2007-08-06
As someone who is fairly new to the oil & gas industry I wanted something to explain the essentials of refining and this is exactly what this book does. In easy to understand language with a minimum of math one is able to understand the basics of the refining process.
I will want to go on from here to something that is much more in depth, but as a starting point this was exactly what I was looking for.
Teaching an old dog.............2007-05-13
Humorus and enlightening at the same time. Surely the design of a petroleum refinery would have to left to someone else. But, I know a great deal more about the process. Thanks, Mr. Leffler.
A Good Introduction to the Topic of Petroleum Refining.......2006-07-19
My boss at work gave me this book in an effort to get me up to speed on the industries we monitor. Having absolutely no background in oil and natural gas (beyond some general remarks dropped here and there in my undergraduate engineering curriculum), I found the text to be very informative, albeit in a non-technical way. Potential readers of this text should note that the information is highly focused- the author only covers refining of petroleum, and not other topics of interest, such as oil field exploration and development or petrochemicals manufacturing.
I have to agree with some of the previous reviewers who correctly pointed that some of the information contained in the book, at least from a rigorous technical standpoint, was not entirely correct. However, that was not the intent of the text. The goal of this text is to introduce the key concepts of the petroleum refining industry, and explain them in a way that say, for example, the personal secretary to an oil executive would understand. I found myself having to consult some of my core textbooks in chemical engineering after reading various topics in the book for more detailed technical information. Those of you looking for the hard-core, quantitative, technical information related to this information, such as chemical processes and process economics, will be disappointed with this text. However, those of you who have a technical or scientific background but no real knowledge of the oil industry even at the rudimentary level (like myself) will find this book to be a good starting point for basic explanations of key concepts.
That said, I see the book as being very useful for those contemplating involvement in some way with the petroleum refining industry, or trying to make some sense of what industry insiders often say to outsiders. If the author takes it upon himself to correct the numerous errata in the book, I would definitely see this text being suitable for a lower division seminar course or survey course on one aspect of the petroleum industry.
In sum, this book more than lives up to its title. My only other complaint is the chapters in the book devoted to additives such as TAME and MTBE. Since they are no longer added to most fuels in the US, future editions might want to drop detailed coverage of this topic (but perhaps refer to them in a historical context). Mr. Leffler did an excellent job of demystifying an obscure but extremely important subject. For those of you with a non-technical background, I advise you to read this book one chapter at a time and bounce the key ideas off of an industry insider. For those of you with a technical background but no real knowledge of the oil industry, I strongly advise you to to read this book and then consult other relevant titles from PennWell Publishing (who incidentally publish the highly informative Oil & Gas Journal, as well as other publications on the oil and natural gas industries).
Overrated.......2005-12-17
Recommended this to students but they found too much bad information. Maybe nontechnical means not worried about details being correct.
Great book for a novice.......2005-11-05
I needed a quick read and overview of the basics of refining. This book was both easy to read and comphrehensive for the non-energy professional. If you want to learn about refining, this is a great place to start.

Excellent book for the project engineer! Hard to enhance.......2007-07-24
One of the most comprehensive books in the area I have ever seen. I like its approach with guidelines of how to use it depending on the type of user.
It combines advices on mechanical, civil and electrical aspects obtained on years of experience of the authors (more than 100 specialist from the academy and industry).
A huge effort fron the editors. If you like the subject and want one bible-like book, this is it!
Great Reference.......2007-01-15
A great reference book that deals with all design aspects related to pumping stations. Furthermore, there is extensive information concerning procurement and commercial issues. The book is clear even when it goes into detailed information and should be considered as a must have for every engineer working in this field.
Pumping Station Review By Straeffer Pump.......2007-01-03
The book is informational and a great asset in our business. It has become an essential tool used daily to help us in our day to day functions in the office.
This was a difficult book to find and we were glad Amazon.com could fullfill our needs.
Fully covering.......2004-05-28
The Sanks' Pumping Station design is a mile stone in its field.
Having every aspect covered, Sanks has not only designed his book in a way that is easily readable for the field related people but also made it a basic reference for the people on the management side of it.
Owning such a book is a knowldge in itself !!!!
Excellent!.......2000-12-01
One of the very best engineering texts that I have run across in my career. Exceptionally clear, comprehensive, and practical.
Book Description
The third edition of Engineering Design represents a major reorganization and expansion. The revision has resulted from the recognition that engineering students need more structure to guide them through the design process. Chapters have been reordered to be more in the natural progression of the design process. The book is broader in content than most design texts, but now contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design.
Book Description
Providing solid digital system design fundamentals while accomplishing a gradual, bottom-up development of these fundamentals, this book focuses on the ever-evolving applications of basic computer design concepts. Treatment of logic design, digital system design, and computer design. Ideal for self-study by engineers and computer scientists.
Customer Reviews:
Awful.......2007-01-16
If you can possibly avoid it, don't buy this book. If you can't possibly avoid it, remember to use the internet. The internet is 3000 times better at things than this book is.
Also, realize that even the problems in this book have continuous typos so if your TA grades you as wrong, check to make sure you are doing the same problem their solution book solved. I wish we could rate this book without a star.
Superb.......2006-10-10
This book is Superbly well written and comprehensible. Its is my favourite book in my Library and it has made Digital Systems (A Subject in my Course) my favourite. The book is Good... no kidding. At first when I started reading the book, I thought it was going to be like one of those books that just kept the reader on a Rocking Chair. Fortunately, I kept on reading because I had nothing better to do; as a result by the time I read two 10 pages... I got hooked.
The book is intuitive and explains lots of Techniques about Implementing Circuits.
Between the two extremes.......2006-01-04
Although I'm very sympathetic to the bad reviews of this text, having just used it in an undergrad course I recently completed, I think they unfairly target the book when the courses themselves are probably partly to blame.
Not to say that the 5-star review is perfectly accurate either. You'll probably find that the reason that review was so good was that since the author was 5-years lately graudated from his degree, he was reviewing material rather than learning it for the first time. Even a poor book would be useful for this.
But to my own opinions; I found the book fairly comprehensive, with detailed and complete explanations that could be followed with a little effort. Although it had a lot of diagrams, it was still fairly wordy, which is unfortunate in a technical text. It also didn't have any worked answers to the questions, except some online, which is difficult for a student to get to on a spur of the moment when they need them.
The other reviews are also correct when they say that many of the exercise questions didn't directly relate to any of the explanations in their chapters, but seemed to require knowledge of completely new material.
All in all, this could be a great text if it was twice the size, contained a lot more diagrams, contained at least some worked answers, and made sure that every exercise question was based on theory explanation that was actually present in the book. As it is, it is next to useless as a self-study guide.
What it remains extremely good for is a companion text to a course which includes contact with lecturers and tutors. If the head lecturer makes sure that any theory not covered in the book is covered in class, and chooses exercise questions that they know the students should be able to complete, and if the tutors are accessible for advice, then the text is extraordinarly good.
No offence to the other reviewers, but I suspect that if they hated the book that much, they were either students who preferred self-study to attending class, or their courses were badly structured.
Excellent book! A "must have" to all CS and EE professionals! .......2005-12-14
This book is the most comprehensive book ever written on digital logic and computer fundamentals. There is no other way to put it.
I graduated with a CS degree five years ago, and we used "Structured Computer Organization" by Andrew Tanenbaum for class. I feel that the negative reviews written on this book should instead apply to Tanenbaum's.
This is the book we should have used for class in the first place. Here I am five years after graduating, and, only now, after reading this book, I am beginning to fully understand how all the internals of a digital computer work and fit together.
I have no affiliation with the authors nor am I in academia to have any reason defend it. But rather, I am defending it for the wealth of information that was put in it. This is information that is paramount to every CS and EE student/professional.
I bought this book on my own, for self development, and have read most chapters. I had no trouble following the explanations. The authors give the motivation for the study right at the beginning of each chapter, so that readers/students would look ahead and anticipate where and how the concepts and techniques will be used (and where does it apply/fit within the general purpose computer). They first give an overview and then delve into it deeper. I believe that everything should be taught that way, so that people can actually learn what was taught, especially when learning how computers tick.
I have to admit, however, that some of the concepts might be a little advanced if you are just starting to learn about computers. That's why I think that if this book is used in class at some university, it should be taught in two semesters - in order to cover everything thoroughly. There is much and too good-of-information to pass up, to cover the book only partially.
Don't get discouraged when reading this book and find that you don't understand some concepts. Find another lower level explanation to it from a different source, understand it, and then return to the book again and continue. You will find out that by doing that, going through it and learning concept by concept, you will gain an enormous amount of knowledge.
Look elsewhere.......2005-11-10
If this book is required for your class, PLEASE buy a different book. This book offers little to no explanation of key topics, is very poorly written, and is hard to follow. In many cases, you will be better off simply reading Wikipedia. If you go to a school that requires this book, I would advise you to write angry letters to the people who decided to use it until they submit to your whim. By choosing this book, they have ruined an entire semester of class for you. How does that make you feel?

Transformer and inductor Design Handbook.......2007-07-17
This book supplies explanation clear and exhausting to many problems that every encounter day in the planning of transformers even if lacks many arguments that I'de like to me to deepen, but is a profit point of departure for me.
Great book by Colonel Wm. T. McLyman.......2006-08-15
I wish I had this book many years ago....Since it answers many design problems I have already figured out the hard way, through lots of grind and sweat... At this time I don't really need the book, but intrigued how the Colonel approaches magnetics problems in the same manner I approach them...
The book is written in a clear, no-nonsense straight to the point approach. The way all technical textbooks "should" be written.... Although a solid theoretical understanding is paramount in magnetics, there is no need to re-invent the wheel everytime you approach magnetics, the Colonel shows this, unlike books that start at Maxwell's equations to solve every problem is just an academic excercise to satisfy one's ego...
I did work at JPL briefly and wish I had the oppurtunity to sit down and talk to the Colonel...
I highly recommend this book... Other books to accompany this text would be by Reuben Lee "Electronic Transformers and Circuits" 2nd edition as well as the "Classic" "Magnetic Circuits and Transformers" by M.I.T (Hardcover 1958)
Among the best foundational material for magnetics design........2006-06-21
Wether you are an engineer, technician, or just an interested layman, this book will take you from the grass roots understanding of basic magnetics all the way through to some fairly advanced topics. Among magnetics engineers, I have found it to be one of THE BEST for properly setting up foundational knowledge and theory. Too many engineers have weak or incomplete foundations and quickly hit a plateau where they can't go further until they go back and really understand the basics. If you buy one book, buy this one. The other two books I would recommend of this caliber are no longer in print.
Great Book, Buy it!.......2005-06-13
This is probably the best book on transformer design that I've found. It's geared towards the engineer who actually wants to design a real working transformer. The text is comprehensive, and the discussions are inteligent and easy to follow. There are tons of real word examples. As I was reading this book, there were many times when the lights went on in my head, and subjects that where previously a mystery, became crystal clear. There are so many poorly written books out there on this subject that it is a real pleasure to come across a book so well written.
A very thorough analysis........2002-11-08
I would highly recommend the book. I was able to fairly quickly design a resonant inductor for a 500 watt ballast. The calculations agreed with the test test data very well.

Generally Good Information.......2004-05-19
As an owner of the second and third editions, I found the second edition's physical qualities (paper, printing quality, etc.) to be better than the third edition's. Mr. Messina is mistaken when he indicates that my previous review was based on the second edition. I had ordered (through Amazon) the book on a waiting list and got it shortly after it was published. It is sitting next to me as I type. The second edition is in my office.
Pump Handbook, 3rd Edition review.......2002-09-26
I can't confess as having read the whole book as it is very extensive, but from what I've read so far I can provide the following review.
As an EPC Engineer with vessels/exchanger experience, I don't have much experience with centrifugal pumps. Therefore I bought the 3rd Edition of the Pump Handbook to quickly learn more about all kinds of pumps and bone up on pump basics. This book meets all my expectation for technical content to learn about pumps. The book provides detail explanation about all kinds of pumps, their parts, and provides disadvantage/advantage of each type. It even goes in detail on impeller design calculations.
Sadly, this 3rd Edition is diminished by poor graphics. About 50% of the pictures and graphs are blurry and not printed too clear or focused. Maybe the 2nd Edition might be better in this respect. Otherwise, this is a MUST HAVE book for any Engineer or pump user to have.
Pump Handbook.......2001-03-12
Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library.
Description corrections.......2000-12-28
I am one of the four editors of this handbook. Please note the correct number of pages is 1765. The 2nd edition has the 1280 pages presently described. After the name Charles Heald add that he is an editor also. The 2nd and 3rd reviewers are referring to the 2nd edition of the handbook as they are dated before the 3rd edition was printed.
Third Edition Builds on Success of First and Second.......2000-12-13
As an owner of the second edition, I looked forward to the revised update. The quality of the information is high. However, I was disappointed in the quality of the publication. Some of the graphs and charts seemed "muddy" with hard to read notations. Also, the binding and paper quality seemed to have slipped a little. This seems to be a trend. I own a number of texts from the 1950's. Their binding and paper quality is much better than that used today.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of room for improvement.......2006-11-29
Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:
1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.
2- The problem set is close to worthless. Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.
Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning. A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.
A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students.......2005-08-22
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.
Broad overview with not much rigor.......2003-01-07
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude. This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.
a must book for mechanical engineers.......2000-05-05
This book is a must for mechanical engineers who work in the field of fracture mechanics. It covers the subjects entirely. It is very easy to understand. this book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics
a great book for mechanical engineering students.......1999-10-18
when the proff. don't say and discuss the importent topics in the class, this book gives you all what you need to understand what is going on.. note:Anderson is talking aver nice way about HRR-field..but he did not give the exp. proof for this theory...
Book Description
This extensively revised and expanded third edition of the Artech House bestseller, Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, offers you the most up-to-date and definitive resource on this critical method for solving Maxwell's equations. There has been considerable advancement in FDTD computational technology over the past few years, and this new edition brings you the very latest details with four new invited chapters on advanced techniques for PSTD, unconditional stability, provably stable FDTD-FETD hybrids, and hardware acceleration. Moreover, you find many completely new sections throughout the book, including major updates on convolutional PML ABCs; dispersive, nonlinear, classical-gain, and quantum-gain materials; and micro-, nano-, and bio- photonics.
This single resource provides complete guidance on FDTD techniques and applications, from basic concepts, to the current state-of-the-art. It enables you to more efficiently and effectively design and analyze key electronics and photonics technologies, including wireless communications devices, high-speed digital and microwave circuits, and integrated optics. You find sample FDTD codes written in Matlab® that serve as a self-guided refresher, and examples of how to use the FDTD method on a wide range of projects in the field. What's more, to supplement the third edition, the authors and publisher have created a Website where you can find solutions to the problems, sample FDTD PML codes, text updates/errata, and downloadable color graphics and videos. Consequently, this new edition is the ideal textbook for both a senior-year undergraduate elective course and a graduate course in computational electrodynamics.

Brilliant textbook on computational EM.......2007-02-04
This is THE STANDARD reference on FDTD methods in computational electrodynamics. Moreover, even if time-domain is not your main thing but you still work with computational EM, add this to your library. It is wonderfully written, simultaneously easy to read and deeply comprehensive. You can get your own codes going by reading this book. After applying the things you learn here you will have a renewed inspiration in Maxwell's equations and E&M.
The book for FDTD.......2005-11-09
This book is an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable reference/tutorial. The book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate class with a prerequisite of one semester of undergraduate E&M. (The authors' preface indicates that this prerequisite is not entirely necessary, but I don't see how you could understand what is going on without it.)
The book can also be used for self-study. In this vein, the book's website contains 1d-, 2d-, and 3d-matlab scripts that are excellent for learning how to actually implement all of this stuff. The third edition weighs in at just over 1000 pages with a price tag of $139, which is $10 cheaper than the 2nd edition was when it came out.
Allen Taflove is, perhaps, the leader in the development and use of this technique. Allen is now at Northwestern. Susan Hagness was a recent PhD student of his (1998) and is now an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Wisconsin. The authors are at the forefront in the development of applications.
The third edition is significantly larger than the 2nd edition and includes several applications chapters that were cowritten with the major researchers in the field. The extraordinary explosion of application areas for FDTD is captured in the later chapters, and these chapters give students and new researchers a clear flavor of the vitality and interest in the field which extends from the detection of breast cancer to ELF pulses produced by earthquakes. It is refreshing to find authors who so readily give credit to others in their field. Taflove and Hagness have been very gracious in this regard, and as a consequence have a much better book and a very detailed and useful bibliography.
I very heartily recommend this book to anyone who wishes to use FDTD techniques.
Agree with Prior Reviewer.......2002-09-21
I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters. I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, I completely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.
The Book News review is somewhat misleading. Taflove derives the difference equations in full, painstaking detail. (Perhaps the Book News reviewer fell asleep during that portion.) For me, this was the most valuable and educational portion of the book. Example applications have their place, but only after understanding the basic principles. Taflove did an excellent job in describing these principles, which go far beyond the basic Yee algorithm (e.g. extrapolation techniques and incorporation of BC's). Those readers familiar with other FD books should understand what I'm saying here: Anyone who reads this book and understands it will not only be conversant about FDTD but should also be able to write solid working codes. With the K&L book, this is very questionable.
A good overview of FD-TD method.......2000-05-25
A good intro book for the FD-TD method with many applications. The list of references at the end of each chapter is also very useful. Some of the material is now outdated and needs corrections, but otherwise a great reference for CEM. I would recommend this book over the Kunz & Luebbers FD-TD book.
