Book Description
The goal of this book is to bring together into one accessible text the fundamentals of the many disciplines needed by today's engineer working in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The subject matter is wide-ranging: microfabrication, mechanics, heat flow, electronics, noise, and dynamics of systems, with and without feedback. Because it is very difficult to enunciate principles of `good design' in the abstract, the book is organized around a set of Case Studies that are based on real products, or, where appropriately well-documented products could not be found, on thoroughly published prototype work.
The Case Studies were selected to sample a multidimensional space: different manufacturing and fabrication methods, different device applications, and different physical effects used for transduction. The Case Study subjects are: the design and packaging of a piezoresistive pressure sensor, a capacitively-sensed accelerometer, a quartz piezoelectrically-driven and sensed rate gyroscope, two electrostatically-actuated optical projection displays, two microsystems for the amplification of DNA, and a catalytic sensor for combustible gases.
This book is used for a graduate course in `Design and Fabrication of Microelectromechanical Devices (MEMS)' at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is appropriate for textbook use by senior/graduate courses in MEMS, and will be a useful reference for the active MEMS professional.
Each chapter is supplemented with homework problems and suggested related reading. In addition, the book is supported by a web site that will include additional homework exercises, suggested design problems and related teaching materials, and software used in the textbook examples and homework problems.
Customer Reviews:
not that useful as a textbook.......2007-10-17
This book is good just for a starter's guide to MEMS. It just touches a wide range of topics. But if you want to learn the subject with real understanding, then this book can not help you.
Review on microsystem design.......2003-11-25
The book tries to cover many different topics at the same time and sometimes makes a quite messy work. However, the book has very good chapters and not so good ones. It provides a good introduction on MEMS fabrication, but a more interested reader will find difficult to fabricate MEMS with the given information. Chapters 5,6,7 and 8 are excellent, but chapters 9, 10,11 and 12 are incomplete and not easily understandable for a Electrical Engineer graduate student. Chapter 13 begins with general equations to be simplified considerably later, giving the impression to the reader that he has learned only a little about fluids. Chapter 11 is quite confusing and chapter 12 lack examples in 2D and 3D lumped models.
Book Description
Quantum mechanical phenomena-including energy bands, energy gaps, holes, and effective mass-constitute the majority of properties unique to semiconductor materials. Understanding how these properties affect the electrical characteristics of semiconductors is vital for engineers working with today's nanoscale devices. Designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, Principles of Semiconductor Devices covers the dominant practical applications of semiconductor device theory and applies quantum mechanical concepts and equations to develop the energy-band model. The text presents quantum mechanics through examples related to the energy-band model, providing students with a deeper understanding of the energy-band diagrams used to explain semiconductor device operation. The semiconductor theory is directly linked to the electronic layout and design of integrated circuits. The author has divided the text into four parts. Part I explains semiconductor physics, and Part II presents the principles of operation and modeling of the fundamental junctions and transistors. Part III discusses the diode, MOSFET, and BJT topics that are needed for circuit design. Part IV introduces photonic devices, microwave FETs, negative-resistance diodes, and power devices. The chapters and the sections in each chapter are organized hierarchically. Core material is presented first, followed by advanced topics, allowing instructors to select more rigorous, design-related topics as they see fit.

Equations are not so good from mathematical viewpoint.......2005-08-05
Although there's a lot of information, the equations could be physically correct, in SI system. Right now there are many strange numbers and conversion included, i.e. 4.44 or 10 etc. which make the practical calculations simple, but hides the underlaying physical principles.
Magnetic Core Selection for Transformers and Inductors.......2000-07-19
This book is a must have for anyone serious on the subject. It's the most comprehensive source of information I have ever come across; pays for itself in time saved searching for data, examples are of great practical value and the material is current. EE background recommended.

It provides a multi-disciplinary look at sampling methods, analysis, pathology, and regulations. The book explores differences in the detection levels achieved with various techniques applied to the various types of environmental and human samples. This includes comparisons of recommended and/or required sampling schemes and the parameters associated with the instruments used in each of the methods. Offering state-of-the-art data on asbestos exposure and the resultant development of disease, the content is styled so that the depth of coverage is sufficient for specialists and researchers but also useful for anyone having to deal with asbestos-related problems.
Book Description
Providing an introduction to electronic materials and device concepts for the major areas of current and future information technology, the value of this book lies in its focus on the underlying principles. Illustrated by contemporary examples, these basic principles will hold, despite the rapid developments in this field, especially emphasizing nanoelectronics.
There is hardly any field where the links between basic
science and application are tighter than in nanoelectronics & information technology. As an example, the design of resonant tunneling transistors, single electron devices or molecular electronic structures is simply inconceivable without delving deep into quantum mechanics.
This textbook is primarily aimed at students of physics,
electrical engineering and information technology, as well as material science in their 3rd year and higher. It is equally of interest to professionals wanting a broader overview of this hot topic.
"Nanoelectronics and Information Technology" by Rainer Waser and his colleagues is an outstanding compendium of
information about an exciting new field. Owing to its high quality and complete coverage of the many topics in this area, this well referenced book will have a long and very useful life as a primary text for students experienced and new in nanoelectronics. It is a very impressive book." (Richard Siegel)

A Monumental Book.......2004-06-03
I am a microelectronics circuit designer with some physics/EE background. I believe this is "The Comprehension of Entire Human History on Science and Technology", done beautifully. Although the focus is rather on physical science area (with exceptional reviews on process/device technology), it also deals with philosophically intriguing topics like ultimate computer and quantum computing. In order to get a decent review for each topic, you need to spend several days in library. This book does it in one book-length beautifully. I show my respect to the Editor Prof. Waser for the insight and endeavor for this book.

Wonderful Book with Superb Graphics........2004-04-27
Some books on nanotechnology are just trying to capitalize on the nanotechnology craze. There are some books on nanotechnology that are not worth buying. But not this one. This book is hefty (1000 pages). If you want to learn about nanotechnology and read about the fundamental physics and chemistry of nanoscale materials and devices, this is the book to buy. This book can give you a very quick tutorial of what you want to know immediately without the hassle of having to read through boring pages of unnecessary stuffs. I am very impressed with the professionally drawn color illustrations and typesetting. As the title suggests, this book also covers IT-related devices (eg memories, data storage, and data transmissions). You can see that a lot of time and efforts by numerous people have been collectively spent in preparing this book. If you are not sure which book on nanotechnology to buy, but need something that is a bit more encyclopedic with adequate background materials instead of just reviewing current trends, then buy this one first.
Electronics goes nano.......2003-10-29
The title "Nanoelectronics and Information Technology" was extremely attractive and, hence, I decided to buy this multi-authored book as soon as it became available on the market. This monumental 1000-pages book comprises 40 chapters which have been organized in 8 sections:
(I) Fundamentals, (II) Technology and analysis, (III) Logic devices, (IV) Random access memories, (V) Mass storage devices, (VI) Data transmission and interfaces, (VII) Sensor arrays and imaging systems, and (VIII) Displays.
Fully covering each of the above fields would require far more space than that available in a book of this same size. Hence, the editor has done the clever choice of writing chapters 20-30 pages long, each of them sufficiently self contained. For example, the (sub)field of Molecular Electronics (my favorite topic) is treated in ch.20, pp. 503-525. This chapter ends with 66 references, enough for further study. The closely related subject on Organic Light Emitting Devices (ch. 38) can be consulted by checking either the general index at the end of the book or the table of contents. Placing some keywords at the end of the former chapter, however, would have greatly facilitated my jump to the latter. Chapters seems being too independent from each other. This, I think, is the weakest point of this monumental opera. The book contains plenty of good graphs and figures, many of them colored, placed nearby the text. Taking into account both the huge amount of information contained in this book and the difficulties in amalgamating the many different topics in this rapidly developing field, I finally decided to rate this book with five stars.

Reference Resource.......2005-09-30
Comprehensive in-depth reference tool - this is how the book has been characterized by a university professor using it for his course instruction. I concur. Amazing amount of practical detail in one refernce. Dimensionally a bit large and gangly but likely would require mulitple volumes if in standard book size. The web page link is a nice feature given the fast moving topic. Cleanroom reference is out of date and could be updated given the reference focus. Text discusssions well written and unusually pleasant to read.

Excellent casual referance.......2001-06-01
This book has achieved just the right balance between throughness and overview so that I have been able to refer to it in a casual manner (once every 3-6 months) and been able to use the results without taking a new college course. I am a practicing Analog electronics engineer and thermal engineering is something I only do once (perhaps more ?) during a design/project.
