It concludes with a discussion of the principles and problems related to the development of regional energy problems. The second part covers technological advances and development of coal carbonization, gasification, liquefaction and agglomeration. The book ends with a discussion on how to improve efficiency and information on coal waste utilization.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.......2006-03-23

I am not an expert or professionally involved in the mining industry but I bought this book for an overview of a particular sector of the FSU economy. It is extremely professionally produced and contains all the information you could want on this particular branch. It does not extensively explore the economy of coal mining in Russia/Ukraine/ other ex-FSU states after the end of the soviet government but that is understandable given the dislocation of the governments in the new states and its detrimental impact on statistical gathering and info. If you are at all involved in the coal industry or just interested in a detailed technical account of the state of the soviet planning/management/development process as seen from a single sector, I would recommend this book.

        Book Description

Where will our electricity come from in the future, and how will we use it? The UK is aiming for a 60% reduction of 1990 carbon dioxide emission levels by 2050, yet the electricity industry and patterns of electricity use must change radically if this is to be achieved. This authoritative overview analyses a range of possible scenarios for the future of electricity in the UK. Specialists in various renewable electricity technologies demonstrate the potential each has to play a significant role. Other routes to a low-carbon electricity system are also considered, including nuclear power, improved power electronics, a wider use of superconducting technology, and micro-generation systems including combined heat and power. The book concludes by examining opportunities for demand side improvements in architecture, industry and transport. Each chapter is written by a technical expert in a manner accessible to readers interested in energy technology, policy and economics.

          Book Description

Experience has shown that structural solutions for water diversion, conservation, and transfer are not always the most efficient and economically sound alternatives. New, non-structural means of solving problems must be used to guarantee safe and efficient allocation of water to domestic, agricultural, and industrial customers. Focusing on conflict resolution, Water Resources Systems Analysis discusses systematic approaches for the mathematical modeling of various water resources issues, helping decision-makers allocate water effectively and efficiently. Readers will gain an understanding of simulation, optimization, multi-criterion-decision-making, as well as engineering economics and time series analysis-all necessary for successful water resources systems analysis. The book explores recent developments in surface and groundwater systems optimization and modeling, and relates these to real field applications and case studies. Supported by essential mathematical tools, this book gives current and future hydrologists, water resources managers, and civil engineers a logical reference for prioritizing and addressing critical issues such as flood control, power generation, and water quality management.

With the establishment of new international standards for environmental management systems (EMS), many managers are faced with the daunting and often bewildering task of creating management systems that enable their companies to conform to these standards. In their haste and confusion, however, many companies implement bureaucratic, ineffective systems that add no real value to their businesses.

The ISO 14001 Implementation Guide: Creating an Integrated Management System shows you how to use the ISO 14001 standard to improve your company's productivity and profitability while meeting registration requirements. Using a practical, business-oriented approach, this authoritative book details the background and development of the ISO 14000 series of standards, fully explains the requirements of 14001, and offers hands-on guidance on how to implement an effective EMS. It highlights common but costly mistakes, and leads you step-by-step through the creation of an EMS that will result in a more competitive business as well as a cleaner environment.

In addition, she provides insights into ways of successfully integrating ISO 9000, ISO 14001, and other management systems.

The ISO 14001 Implementation Guide provides a wealth of proven tips, techniques, and tools that help ensure smooth, trouble-free, and efficient EMS implementation, including critical success factors, flowcharts for setting up the elements of an environmental management system, helpful tips, and advice for avoiding common pitfalls.

                  Book Description

Provides a general overview of the current practices and procedures that should be considered for financing and establishing rates and charges for wastewater collection and treatment systems. It updates the 1984 Edition of Financing and Charges for Wastewater Systems co-published by (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and (American Public Health Association (APHA), then in its second edition, and serves as a guide to wastewater utility managers, municipal officials, engineers, accountants, and rate analysts. Because the material was updated using a more rigorous peer-review process, the publication is now classified as a Manual of Practice. This manual is not intended to provide a simplistic “cook book” or universal approach to cost allocation and rate making. Rather, it is meant to illustrate the various ways of analyzing and allocating the operating and capital costs associated with collecting and treating wastewater and developing rates and charges that reasonably and equitably reflect the cost of service. The manual stresses the complexity of the integrated considerations involved in developing wastewater system cost allocation and rates for services.
