4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story Telling and Vivid Characters!.......2007-10-17

Phillip Pullman creates a wonderful story full of vivid characters. You easily fall for Lyra and the premise of the story and its parallel worlds is fascinating. He touches some serious questions and concepts; religion and social responsibility among them, while blurring lines between what we have been trained to see as good and evil in a way that you can easily follow. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt that the last installment, The Amber Spyglass may have been a bit rushed. Maybe I just didn't want it to end...? Overall I am thrilled that I finally found this series! One my favorite series!

1 out of 5 stars Children's Book?.......2007-10-12

I am an avid reader, and I love fantasy and children's literature, but what is up with everyone loving these books? I was looking forward to reading The Golden Compass, only to be completely disapointed within a few pages of starting it. I found it to be almost disturbing in its weirdness, and I honestly do not know a child, even an older well-read child, that would be able to read these books without confusion and with a genuine interest in finishing the trilogy. I managed to finish the first book, but had no interest in pursuing the trilogy further, and I was honestly left with a bad vibe from having read The Golden Compass. After reading the comments from the author about his purpose for writing the book, I can understand why I do not like it. What happened to writing children's books with the intent to entertain children with harmless, light-heartedness? I will stick with Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia thank you!!!

1 out of 5 stars Anti Christian .......2007-10-11

While I admit that Pullman has considerable skill as a writer, I'd like to warn others that these books are blatantly anti-Christian. Do a simple Google search of the authors name or the book titles and you'll find plenty to concern you IF you are Christian.

1 out of 5 stars Be aware of what you are indoctrinating your kids with!.......2007-10-10

Parents, before you offer these "fantasy" reads for your kids be aware that this author is promoting atheism and these books are anti-christian, anti-church and anti-God. Be Careful, and be sure that this is what you intend to teach and encourage in your children. I have to give all of these books a thumbs down based on my personal values and beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for young and old alike.......2007-10-08

I am not at all ashamed to admitt that I am a 27 year old person, and I absolutly LOVED all of these books. The author, Pullman, gives such colorful and imaginative explinations that I would actually find it HARD not to fall in love with the main character, Lyra, and her friend, Will. Not to mention the scores of other colorful characters that fit into Lyra and Wills' adventures. I found myself so atatched to Lyra and the other characters in this book that I actually shed a tear MORE THAN ONCE during my readings. I highly recommend this seris of books not only for familys or the newly independent readers, but also for adults who like fantasy fiction books. I have found myself thinking about these books and these characters long after I retired them to my library.

Some books improve with age--the age of the reader, that is. Such is certainly the case with Philip Pullman's heroic, at times heart-wrenching novel, The Golden Compass, a story ostensibly for children but one perhaps even better appreciated by adults. The protagonist of this complex fantasy is young Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Oxford University. But it quickly becomes clear that Lyra's Oxford is not precisely like our own--nor is her world. For one thing, people there each have a personal dæmon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form. For another, hers is a universe in which science, theology, and magic are closely allied:
As for what experimental theology was, Lyra had no more idea than the urchins. She had formed the notion that it was concerned with magic, with the movements of the stars and planets, with tiny particles of matter, but that was guesswork, really. Probably the stars had dæmons just as humans did, and experimental theology involved talking to them.
Not that Lyra spends much time worrying about it; what she likes best is "clambering over the College roofs with Roger the kitchen boy who was her particular friend, to spit plum stones on the heads of passing Scholars or to hoot like owls outside a window where a tutorial was going on, or racing through the narrow streets, or stealing apples from the market, or waging war." But Lyra's carefree existence changes forever when she and her dæmon, Pantalaimon, first prevent an assassination attempt against her uncle, the powerful Lord Asriel, and then overhear a secret discussion about a mysterious entity known as Dust. Soon she and Pan are swept up in a dangerous game involving disappearing children, a beautiful woman with a golden monkey dæmon, a trip to the far north, and a set of allies ranging from "gyptians" to witches to an armor-clad polar bear.

In The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman has written a masterpiece that transcends genre. It is a children's book that will appeal to adults, a fantasy novel that will charm even the most hardened realist. Best of all, the author doesn't speak down to his audience, nor does he pull his punches; there is genuine terror in this book, and heartbreak, betrayal, and loss. There is also love, loyalty, and an abiding morality that infuses the story but never overwhelms it. This is one of those rare novels that one wishes would never end. Fortunately, its sequel, The Subtle Knife, will help put off that inevitability for a while longer. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

In a landmark epic of fantasy and storytelling, Philip Pullman invites readers into a world as convincing and thoroughly realized as Narnia, Earthsea, or Redwall. Here lives an orphaned ward named Lyra Belacqua, whose carefree life among the scholars at Oxford's Jordan College is shattered by the arrival of two powerful visitors. First, her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, appears with evidence of mystery and danger in the far North, including photographs of a mysterious celestial phenomenon called Dust and the dim outline of a city suspended in the Aurora Borealis that he suspects is part of an alternate universe. He leaves Lyra in the care of Mrs. Coulter, an enigmatic scholar and explorer who offers to give Lyra the attention her uncle has long refused her. In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the compass of the title. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. And somehow, both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are involved.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Story.......2007-10-17

This book is a compelling commentary on modern society. Phillip Pullman writes a fantasy with many layers. The story itself is exciting. The reader goes on a roller coaster ride of following well defined characters encounter dangerous and peaceful situations. The many characters in the story often leave the reader guessing - is he or she good or bad? The reader enters a different but parallel world with interesting characters. There is a basic theme of good against evil. Yet this theme circles around the ideology of religion and how those in religious power govern human behavior. Pullman questions how much influence a church should have over people as well as how does influence relate to power. The end of this first book of the trilogy left me needing to read on!His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)The Golden Compass

5 out of 5 stars Be forewarned!.......2007-10-15

This is an incredible book. I mean truly great. The imagery and writing are incredible and enthralling. I enjoyed it BUT...

I also made the mistake of ordering all the books based on the reviews I read on the first book. If you are wanting a Harry Potter kind of read to get excited about book one delivers, But I urge you to read the reviews for all the books in the trilogy especially "The Amber Spyglass" (which has 800 plus reviews under the Audio CD entry, but only 3under the book itself). I was disappointed. But you may not be. Pullman is an excellent writer. But I bought the books based on rave reviews of "Compass" and the trilogy turned out to diverge into heavier topics than I had been expecting.

I give "The Golden Compass" 5 stars, "The Subtle Knife" 3 stars, and "The Amber Spyglass" 1 star if that.

4 out of 5 stars I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book.......2007-10-14

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book, even though it's supposed to be part of a children's series.
The story moves at a fast pace and there are quite a few darker element to this story, so I would probably recommend it for grades 6 and up. The Golden Compass which is the first of 3 books known as Phillip Pullmans "his dark Materials" is also supposed to be released as a movie this year. Can't wait to see how they capture it on screen.

The story revolves around Lyra Belacqua who ends up on a dark adventure trying to find her friend Roger who was kidnapped by The Gobblers. She meets many interesting people on her journey, including witches and armoured bears. The story takes part in a world very similar to ours, except in Lyra's world every human being has a daemon, which is essentially their soul in animal form.
I can't wait to see where the journey leads us in "The Subtle Knife".

5 out of 5 stars Has Everything A Great Story Should Have.......2007-10-02

The Golden Compass is the beginning of a great series - but also a story of it's own. Enlisting science, mysticism, history, geography, and great themes of heroism, determination, willpower, tragedy and destiny - this book will hook you and keep you interested. Although the content seems a bit older than it's central character, Lyra - she's still up to the challenges presented to her. This series is a great way to escape into a different world. The audio versions of this book are performed brilliantly - and are a joy to listen to. Looking forward to the movie this year: if anything like the book - it'll be a smash hit.

4 out of 5 stars Read it before you see the movie!!.......2007-09-28

Phillip Pullman's, The Golden Compass is an entertaining and imaginative fantasy yarn that starts off light and fluffy but takes the reader on an unpredictable and thought-provoking ride.

I was drawn to this book after seeing the movie trailer this summer, figuring that any fantasy/sci fi book with enough popularity to garner a Nicole Kidman movie must be worth a look. My early disappointment led to eventual satisfaction as the novel works on many levels. The story has numerous threads but mostly centers on a young girl on a journey to figure out the mysterious disappearance of other young children. It's really best to know nothing else of the plot, as the surprises are part of the fun. Needless to say the imaginative alternative world Pullman creates is one the reasons this book is so fun. The different inhabitants of the world including sentient polar bears and personal daemons make a complicated but well executed backdrop for the intricacies of the story. Pullman writes entertaining action sequences and can pull off the various emotions required of his main characters. Finally, the book works because it slowly ends up being a whole lot more then just a "quest" story and it exhibits many different tones within the prose. The Golden Compass is wondrous, foreboding, dark, philosophical, and biblical often at the same time.

The Golden Compass is the first of a trilogy but I haven't yet read the others so I can't comment on their quality. The movie comes out 12/07 and is produced by New Line Cinema (the same company that made the LOTR trilogy).

Bottom Line: A great read for fantasy fans but make sure you don't give up on it too early.

2 out of 5 stars Highly theoretical, very small practical value.......2007-08-20

I read this book after reading Enterprise SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture Best Practices By Dirk Krafzig; Karl Banke; Dirk Slama. That is the best book on SOA in my opinion. So may be I am a little biased, but following are my comments:
1. I found it highly theoretical. It tries to explain a lot of concepts, but does not use practical examples. This is in total contrast to the book I mentioned, which keeps the information interesting and readers can relate to it easily.
2. The case studies sections seem to be done hastily and there is no practical knowledge which you can get from them. They seem to be simple applications of web services. The authors use buzzwords like hub centric architecture etc. to make them look different.
3. Authors use all available opportunities to promote IBM products.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2007-06-06

I enjoyed this book and found a lot of valuable information and insight into SOA concepts and issues.

4 out of 5 stars SOA Roadmap.......2006-09-27

This new book from IBM Press released in October 2005 provides valuable inputs for someone looking for an authentic source to obtain a roadmap on SOA. Having said that, the 11 chapters present only a high level view of the topics. For instance, it clarifies that SOA is Platform, Protocol and Programming language independent. These and other aspects relating to backward and forward compatibility, the Enterprise Service Bus, the On Demand Operating Environment (ODOE) are all compressed into one chapter, Chapter-3 titled "Architecture Elements". Chapter-4 presents the SOA Adoption Roadmap with a brief set of tips for success which make interesting reading. Chapter-4 also takes a look at existing roles in IS projects and redefines some of them and introduces new ones. The UDDI Designer, UDDI Administrator and the Services Governor are new roles that I found interesting. Chapter-5 deals with Analysis and Design of Service layers through abstraction and how to categorize them. Chapter-6 carries the interesting analysis and design discussion forward and states that finding the correct asset to solve the enterprise architechture problem is difficult. The chapter discusses 2 scenarios with pros and cons and consequences of each approach with diagrams that are good.

I found these 4 chapters (3-6) of the 11 the highlights of the book. I am looking forward to delving deeper into SOA architecture from other books. This book provided a good foundation for understanding SOA.

4 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening Reading.......2006-04-21

I enjoyed the book. It was well-written in clear language, presenting a concise set of principles for a successful SOA strategy.

This book was an eye-opener for me. It presents SOA as something that you grow into. It described SOA in terms of the business benefits that it leads to, namely agility and flexibility. The authors filled the book with wise advice. It opened my eyes to the path that lay ahead of me.

The authors suggest a close working relationship between business process owners and the technical staff. They claim this is a critical foundation for being able to create services which are indeed flexible and lead to business agility.

The 2 case studies at the end of the book could have included more details.

If you're looking ahead for your own SOA development efforts, definitely pick up this book as you plan projects, evaluate staffing needs, design your architecture, and consider
software purchases.

4 out of 5 stars Core information for application architects..........2006-04-10

The whole subject of SOA, or Service Oriented Architecture, is getting to be ever-more mainstream in IT organizations. Being able to build systems using a web services architecture presents some very real advantages, but how do you know where to begin? From an architecture and structure viewpoint, this book does a pretty good job... Service-Oriented Architecture Compass: Business Value, Planning, and Enterprise Roadmap by Norbert Bieberstein, Sanjay Bose, Marc Fiammante, Keith Jones, and Rawn Shah.

Contents: Introducing SOA; Explaining the Business Value of SOA; Architecture Elements; SOA Project Planning Aspects; Aspects of Analysis and Design; Enterprise Solution Assets; Determining Non-Functional Requirements; Securing the SOA Environment; Managing the SOA Environment; Case Studies in SOA Deployment; Navigating Forward; Glossary; Index

Given the right audience, this has a lot of valuable information. If you're a developer looking for information on how to code a web service, then you'll likely be highly disappointed. This book is *not* a coding tutorial, nor does it profess to be. It really serves as a guide on how an SOA environment can be built and leveraged within an organization. I would see this as being a great book for an application architect trying to position an organization's overall application strategy. For a person like that, all the important concepts are to be found here. There's the "why"... why be concerned with SOA? There's the "who"... Who in your organization plays a part in designing and building these services to be used by the business? And of course, there's a lot of "what"... What are the parts that make up an SOA implementation, and what does an organization have to take into account to make it all work together? It's easy enough to build a web service to look up a name or something, and to think you're now leveraging SOA. The reality is much deeper and more fundamental than just rolling out a web service here and there... An additional feature of the book that makes it unique is that it references online developerWorks articles on the IBM web site in order to add more information to the mix. Oh, and I probably should mention that since it's an IBM Press book, there's a heavy slant towards IBM examples and software. But overall, the core information is vendor-neutral, and it's material you'll need to understand in order to make an SOA implementation a success.

Don't think you'll sit down, read the book in a couple of hours, and then be all-knowing when it comes to SOA. The material takes time to read and understand. But once you make it all the way through, you should be well-grounded in the fundamentals behind it all.

This is an excellent dictionary, with an excellent cd rom, specially to whose are learning English. However, the paper used do print the text is a bad thing about this dictionary: it is too thin.

4 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Dictionary and a Regressive Publisher.......2007-07-29

When it comes to learning proper English, whether British or American, the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary remains a step ahead of the competition. I owned 2 prior editions of the OALD, and both times thought it could not have been possibly improved. I was wrong. The 7th edition is better and more useful than ever before. I really recommend going with the hardcover version, as one of my previous OALD paperbacks fell apart within a year.
There is only one serious gripe that I have with this book. The publisher has removed the venerable Oxford University Coat of Arms from the covers of the dictionary. It was a famous and easily identifiable seal imprinted on all Oxford Dictionaries, and standing for their legendary lexicographic quality. The motto "Dominus Illuminatio Mea" (The Lord is My Light) paid tribute to the origins of Oxford University. As it appears, the publishers have become so neutered as to give in to the pressures of "political sensitivity". I am sure the Oxford University Press can come up with all sorts of feeble and catatonic explanations in defence of their move, but the lost respect is hard to regain.

What a great addition to the City Guides I've been using for years. The language map is well organized and much easier to use than a pocket size dictionary.

      Book Description

This balanced, mainstream, beautifully written and totally up-to-date text is unrivalled in its ability to get students to see the connection between themselves and the social world. It teaches students "how" to think sociologically, not just "what" to think, and emphasizes the importance of diversity and a global perspective. It has been heralded for its inclusion of pop culture examples that instantly connect with today's students, and for its presentation of sociological concepts in a fresh, contemporary light.

      5 out of 5 stars Correct appreciation.......2005-05-02

In this short book, Stefan Zweig sketches an impressive portrait of Erasmus as a private and a public man.
Erasmus was an erudite humanist but a loner (his motto: nulli concedo, homo per se).

He should be considered as the first true European and a real pacifist (all conflicts should be solved through negotiations).
But he was in no way a proponent of democracy, more a supporter of an oligarchic rule.
His biggest failure was that he couldn't prevent the schism between Catholics and Protestants, although he played a crucial role in the negotiations. The Elector of Saxony asked his opinion on Maarten Luther. He couldn't give a clearcut answer.
Erasmus went a long way: 'I am against the truth if it causes dissension'.
But he was too honest. He grasped the fact that the compulsory selling of indulgences by the Pope was an unforgivable extortion.

In a good hundred pages Zweig tells the ultimate tragedy of Erasmus's life: on the one hand, his belief in civilisation and the power of reason; on the other hand, a world full of dissensions and war.

Stefan Zweig writes in an enthusiastic style, full of dramas and contrasts.

A simple but masterful psychological and historical analysis.

3 out of 5 stars Nice product, but..........2006-12-28

My son picked this item out himself to spend some of his Christmas money on. It would be a terrific item and good value except for a couple problems. The model ship was hard to keep together with either glue or double sided adhesive tape as recommended. I think the problem is the shiny finish they put on the pieces. Also, while I was assembling the compass into the box provided the tiny pieces broke off that hold the compass in the side of the compass box, rendering it unusable. I've contacted the manufacturer's customer service department for feedback. Stay tuned for their response... Fortunately my son had also purchased two pirate books which he could continue to enjoy after this disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars This is so cool!.......2002-06-27

I love this product! It taught me so much about Pirates, and it helped me get an A on a report in school! It showed me that learning doesn't have to be boring, and my little brother who can't read yet liked me to show him and teach him about Pirates, too!
