Each pen is reproduced individually and to actual size for ease of identification, making the book the ideal reference guide for both the collector and the enthusiast. Many original, specially commissioned, hand produced line drawings present the pens in an exciting and informative matter. The authoritative and comprehensive text as well as period advertisements compliment the illustrations and provide up-to-date and detailed information on the history of the fountain pen and its industry in the United States of America and United Kingdom.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Required for any FP collector........2007-09-03

After writing Fountain Pens of the World (ISBN 0302006680) Andy reprises his position as the preeminent authority of an endangered writing instrument. The chronological and authoritative description of every major manufacturer is interlaced with some of the most beautiful and actual size photography of pens you'll ever see.

This volume is a work of art and effort of a true aficionado, the most comprehensive history of Sheaffer Pens you'll ever see is inside this book, the choice to break the history of Parker into the USA and UK versions is the mark of a purist.

Beautiful heavy stock paper ensures this volume will endure in your collection for decades.

Andy Lambrou's reputation is well deserved, and this is another work of art from the master.

4 out of 5 stars Authoritative But Not Magical.......2002-02-18

Andreas Lambrou has once again produced an authoritative text on fountain pens. It is relatively comprehensive and has spectacluar photographs and line drawings. This is an excellent guide to learn the history of fountain pens and to identify fountain pens. While there can be no doubt that Mr. Lambrou cares very much about fountain pens, this does not come through in his prose style. Writing is straightforward and clear, but does not connect fountain pens to social history, industrial design, or the just plain joy of writing. Inclusion of several pages on the work of Classic Pens, Mr. Lambrou's own firm, which are of limited interest is a questionable decision.

4 out of 5 stars Fountain Pens - U.S. and U.K........2001-07-14

This and other Lambrou books have been described as invaluable references for the collector. I agree, for the most part. The photos and line drawings in this volume are excellent and the text gives detailed history of each manufacturer's models and variations within models. What is missing is a value guide for the pens listed. I'm sure the most serious collectors find such information unnecesary, but I believe that newer or more casual collectors would find pricing benchmarks useful as they muddle through eBay and other auction sites.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Lambrou's newest authoritative guide.......2000-12-25

For the novice and experienced collector both, this book is Andy's finest yet. By dividing out the US and UK manufacturers, this book provides even greater detail and scale images, as well as historical reference of vintage and modern pens from all of the significant pen makers of the last 100 years. The images (both photos and line images) are the best available to-date, and an invaluable reference to the serious collector.

Authors George Gruhn and Walter Carter are no strangers to fretted instruments: Gruhn runs one of the best vintage instrument stores in the country, and Carter was Gibson's company historian for several years in the 1990s. In the second edition to Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars, the pair have created a useful resource for any lover of fine guitars, banjos, or basses. Though not a price guide, the book will enable collectors to identify the date, stock ingredients, wood, and evolution of their Fender, Martin, Gibson, Gretsch, or Mosrite axes, to name just a few. Many readers will probably want to complement this book with a separate price guide (The Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide is recommended), and it should be noted that many mass-market manufacturers (Kay, for instance) were left out. But with this book you'll at least know that the stock Epiphone Madrid you bought on the Internet is, in fact, truly stock. A great resource for lovers of collectable six-strings. --Jason Verlinde

Book Description

The original version of this guide has sold over 30,000 copies. This new edition has been expanded by 25% and promises to become an invaluable resource. For collectors, dealers and players, this completely updated "field guide" provides specifications, serial numbers, and more for determining the originality of vintage American acoustic and electric fretted instruments. Detailing thousands of models by every major manufacturer, the book now includes expanded coverage of Martin, Guild, Mosrite, Dobro, Gibson banjos, Fender amps, Gibson amps, plus updates on the latest models from Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, and others since 1990.

4 out of 5 stars Much Improved Gruhn's Guide.......2006-02-18

This is a vast improvement over the older version of Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars. I would like the next version to include vintage Sunn amps, heads and cabinets, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Fine! Splendid !!.......2005-09-26

You can get all information quick and without doubt !! I had the first edition, but this second edition is a lot more complete and updated !!!

1 out of 5 stars Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars.......2003-01-05

This book was very limited as far as various makes of guitars. It didn't have any price guides on any of the things listed.
I would think that would be the main information anyone owning a vintage guitar or other musical equipment would be most interested in. This book was useless to us. I wish we could return it. Thank goodness we ordered "The Offical Vintage guitar Magazine Price Guide 2003" It included everything any collector would want to know!!!

2 out of 5 stars Grain of Salt.......2001-07-06

I found this reference to be riddled with ommissions and inaccuracies. The Rickenbacker bass section contains errors in almost every model. A simple check of the Rickenbacker website would have corrected the majority of inaccuracies. Production dates were the most obvious. Now if the book was to be filed under "fiction"...

4 out of 5 stars This is the definitive guide.......2000-08-30

There is no other book, to my knowledge, that does what George Gruhn does here.

First, let me say that I respect Mr. Gruhn's knowledge. There are probably few people in the United States with his encyclopedic knowledge of guitars. I have corresponded with him myself, and he was very helpful

But, I am disappointed in one aspect of the book. I own an 1897 model George Washburn guitar which was made in the nineteenth century by Lyon & Healy. It is a small bodied "Parlor Guitar," with Brazilian rosewood sides and back, spruce top, and ebony fingerboard and bridge. It has beautiful tone, and I love the instrument. It is almost as beautiful as when it was built, and because of the aging of the wood, I'm sure that it plays better.

In this book, Gruhn only briefly discusses Washburn's guitars, and the short reference is buried in the Gibson pages (which is very detailed), because in the late '20s, when the Tonk Brothers acquired the Washburn brand from Lyon & Healy, Gibson built a few of them between 1938-40.

George Washburn (someone has said that his last name was actually Lyon, hence Lyon & Healy) was an American guitar maker, and he built superlative guitars. I've heard that his closest competition at one time was Martin. To give him short-shrift in such a book as this, I find incomprehensible. It isn't as if Gruhn did not know about the guitars--he told me much of what I know about them.

But, perhaps I nitpick. This is a fine book. I recommend it to any guitar aficionado who is buying, selling or trading guitars--especially American-made guitars--or even one who simply wants to learn more about these wonderful instruments.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in the history of sound.......2000-07-01

Tim Fabrizio and George Paul's 1996 book, "The Talking Machine - an Illustrated Compendium," ranks as the finest book ever written on the history of the phonograph. Lavishly illustrated, it is both authoritative and eminently readable. It is hard to imagine anyone, even the authors, improving upon this work, however they have done exactly that with "Discovering Antique Phonographs." What is so remarkable about this achievement is that this new book serves as a rich sequel to their first, yet stands independently as a superb work on its own. It is not surprising that Fabrizio and Paul were able to come up with hundreds more historic and fascinating phonographs to picture in the new book. What is surprising, however, is that this new volume, like their first, includes a very comprehensive history of sound recording. Amazingly, the authors cover the same historic ground as they did in their first work without being repetitious or redundant. They approach the same story from a whole new perspective, so that while both books are complete and authoritative on their own they are superbly complementary. Although the text is engagingly written, most readers will probably be seduced by the stunning photography and extremely detailed captions. The selection of rare phonographs illustrated in large color pictures is stunning, yet every one tells a story or makes a point -- nothing is an extraneous throwaway just for cheap thrills. Like the first book, "Discovering Antique Phonographs" can be read from cover to cover as a serious work of history, or opened to any page and savored in random doses. In fact, the amount of information to be found in the captions makes the text, wonderful as it is, almost superfluous! These captions offer a vast amount of detail, which these skilled writers bring to life with charm and wonder. Like its predecessor "The Taking Machine," "Discovering Antique Phonographs" is a bargain and a must for anyone interested in the history of the phonograph.

This is a "must-have" book for the serious collector of stereo views and those just now getting interested in this fascinating subject. Waldsmith really knows his stuff. Highly recommended.

-David Burkhart, author of Earthquake Days: The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire in 3-D.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Book on Stereo Views - and Viewmaster reels.......2005-09-30

This is an excellent history of the 19th and early 20th century phenomeon "stereo views" in which two copies of a photograph were produced on a letter-sized card and viewed through a hand-held viewer to see the picture in 3-D effect. You still see these old photo cards occasionally at flea markets and antique shops and they have been avidly collected for generations although this form of entertainment died out around the 1920's. Mr. Waldsmith gives us detailed listings of many of the stereo view cards, price value, and information on many photographers. A wonderful bonus for the baby boom generation is the inclusion of the history of Viewmasters, the "updated" version of SVs a fond memory for children for over 50 years and still being issued today. Waldsmith includes a complete list of Viewmaster photo reels and packets issued up through the book's publication as well as the less popular rivals of Viewmaster in the past. Highly recommended even if you don't collect either stereo views or viewmaster reels and invaluable if you do.

4 out of 5 stars Stereo Views: An Illustrated History and Price Guide.......2003-04-23

The revised edition is excellent, apart from forming a useful catalogue of stereographs to seek out, it is also a wonderful history of the many subjects photographed in 3-D over the years. I rated it at 4 stars rather than 5 because I consider the reduced content of the index to be a retrograde step. Having said that it is a 'must have' for all stereographers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2002-07-14

There are prices listed, as well as tips about how to grade collectibles. While prices are always debatable, it is still a great reference. With more than 300 photos on a total 336 pages it is also a wonderful book to browse.

A true "must have" book for any stereo collector!

4 out of 5 stars A Super Updated Stereo Reference Work.......2002-06-01

This is a brand new, year 2002, 336 page book with over 3,000 detailed listings of stereo view collectibles. It has more than 500 black and white photos with a wealth of useful and interesting text on this popular collectible. Chapters include care, condition, and dates of views, evaluating views, leading photographers and publishers and much information on modern era 3-D visual collectibles, including Tru-Vue, Novelviews, View-Master, GAF and more. The volume is completely indexed for easy location of items. Very comprehensive updated value guide. This updated edition is a must for stereo view enthusiasts. Add it to your library.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but limited.......2007-09-25

I like this book as there is almost no PC from the early years that escape it. But my biggest issue is I would like to see more background on more PCs, not just a brief list of specs. Very few have any history of any detail and they're the well-knowns, like Commodore and Tandy. Bigger, color photos would be a real plus as well.

4 out of 5 stars Collectible Microcomputers.......2007-06-13

If you are a collector of old microcomputers like myself then this book is a must. It's an affordable reference guide that you'll always be referring to. Personally I'd love to see a colour edition of this book, a more international (rather than US) flavour and I'd like to see the entries per manufacturer in chronological order rather that alphabetical order.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for vintage computer collectors.......2007-05-15

I was very impressed by this book. Lots of information on vintage computers, some quite in depth histories. Very enjoyable read and something you would go back to. Only one gripe I have is purely cosmetic in that it was all black and white photo's only and a fairly uninspiring layout.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-04-10

If you are into collecting old computers (mainly the 8bit era), this is a must own. It has the specs and approximate prices for each machine from the first minicomputers to the mid 90's with the Amigas and soforth. Some x86 architecture items, mainly the revolutionary items for any 486/Pentium items since they are ... well the industry standard practically.

I recommend in a heartbeat.

4 out of 5 stars Collect computers? You want this book . . ........2005-02-22

Or, if you just love the history of personal computers, then you'll be very happy with this volume. An excellent coffee table book with loads of great pictures and plenty of well-known and obscure systems. Photos inside are all black and white, but good quality and size. A handy field guide and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-09-21

This book was first printed in England in 1985, so don't expect any information more current than that. It is not a price handbook either. What it does provide is a high quality history of the development of the watch from the Middle Ages with a fair deal of technical explanation. For one unfamiliar with how watches are made, some of the terminology will be difficult. The book also provides some examples of how to research a watch and how to engage in the business of selling watches. Unfortunately, information on starting a watch shop in England in the 1980s is not very useful for most American readers of today, and the research is only moderately interesting. But as an historical introduction to watches it is a top-notch overview, suitable for the technically inclined beginner. The photos are of high quality.

4 out of 5 stars his favorite new book.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book for my boyfriends birthday. He is very interested in old tools, and old things in general. He Loves it. He takes it out to the machine shed and compares tools, or just glances at the pages in the evenings. The two largest sections are those on plumb bobs and planes.

5 out of 5 stars Chronometer Development Explained.......2003-04-11

This is an excellent history of the development of the marine chronometer from the earliest attempts through to the modern day. Gould was in an excellent position to write authoritatively because he reconstructed John Harrison's original "sea clocks" some of which had lain forgotten and in a very poor state. He not only restored them and got them working, but described them in detail for posterity.

This book contains a wealth of technical detail, carefully and accurately describing the designs, techniques and principles of the various developments that occurred as timekeeping at sea gradually improved over two centuries. Those who want technical details and explanations will not be disappointed in this book, while those who want to know about the background and the personalities who devoted their lives to the pursuit of accurate timekeeping will find plenty to interest them. The book contains many drawings and sketches of the various escapements which evolved and the other refinements that were invented in the course of the history of the chronometer.

All those interested in the history and technology of mechanical timepieces need to have this book in their library.

    400 pages, 40+ photos, 85 sketches.

    Book Description

Finally, a superb reference book on Philco, the leading radio manufacturer during radio's "Golden Age." Philco Radio: 1928-1942 not only shows many of Philco's radio receivers, but provides background on the company as well. Specifications for each model are given. The text is divided into a year-by-year look at Philco's radio line, so that the reader may see what Philco had to offer each year between 1928, when the company began to make radios, and 1942, when World War II put a halt to radio production. Philco Radio is an invaluable source for the radio collector. Anyone who enjoys antiques and collectibles or was lucky enough to remember radio's "Golden Age" will also enjoy taking a nostalgic trip through its pages. This is the first volume to feature Philco's radio products exclusively. The photographs and specifications will prove a valuable aid in identifying a particular Philco model.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for the serious Philco collector.......2001-08-17

This is one of my favorite reference books. The pictures are great and especially helpful when you are trying to restore an old disgarded Philco to it's former beauty. Packed with interesting history and trivia. Values listed in the book tend to be on the conservative side, but then again most reference books tend to do this. If you love old radios and their history, this is a "Must Have" for your book shelf. (PS. His website is pretty neat too)

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "must-have" for collectors of anitque radios.......1998-11-26

Ron Ramirez (Mr. Philco to radio collectors) has compiled one of the finest books of its type. Focusing solely on Philco radios, he traces the evolution of the Philadelphia Storage Battery Co. from its roots to PHILCO, one of America's leading manufacturers of home radios. The book is organized chronologically by model year and includes a photograph and text explanation for virtually every Philco radio ever manufactured. Each chapter begins with a detailed description of the key features of the new models, how Philco responded to the fierce competion of the day, and the company's marketing strategies for the new year. The photography is outstanding with the vast majority of the pictures representing the best available examples of original or restored radios. The author wraps up the book with a listing by year of all Philco models, their tube configurations, and a "rarity" scale. While an excellent technical reference and history book, it also presents an interesting insight into how the Art Deco school of design influenced even radio cabinetry of the period. Highly recommended!
