4 out of 5 stars Second will be better.......2007-04-29

This is the textbook for my sophomore electromagnetics in the electrical engineering. I have to admit I really hated this class then. One is that there are equations here and there and it usually clouds the issue. Another reason is that the author uses the deduction method to describe this topic. It is quite different from the traditional way which goes following the historical developments.

For some reasons, I need to refresh electromagnetics in later years. I re-studied this book and then found it written pretty well this time. It is well-organized and systematic. One weak spot is the explanation for physics. I think it should be made better so that it is easier for readers to absorb the knowledge instead of confused by those mathematical equations.

This book is rather classic, which means it stays at the balance of electromagnetic statics and dynamics. Many recent electromagnetic textbooks are more focused on electromagnetic waves at the expense of the electromagnetic statics. I don't think this is a wise decision since electromagnetic statics is still very important in the real world applications, for example RF IC design.

This book is published almost 20 years ago. But don't regard it as out of date. Based on my acamedic and industrial experience, it is still the best engineering electromagnetic textbook for undergraduates.

You will finally understand what light is - 10 years after you take the course.

Yes, 2 years after you take the course, you get to arrange waves that can go easily back and forth from wave equations(insane vector calculus) to circuit equations(simple V=IR).

Yes, combined with clever Fourier math, you get to calculate impedance as vector reflection waves, so that you see (through Smith-Chart night vision like mental glasses) the waves invisible to human eyes (but visible to some animals) and make them oscillate/up-down-mix as an EE engineer making a living.

But James Maxwell's math is the only thing interesting in the world, which the book says that well. God made the waves and nothing more. If you want to make stories out of the context or take words out of the context (many books try and do), you give yourself trouble. Yes, we give ourselves troubles all our life. And you will see that in this book. This is life.

Everyone in this world needs to understand how a wave of light is made.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2006-05-11

This book was horrid. I was bombing the class all year with this text, until I bought REA's electromagnetics problem solver. Going into the final, I had maybe a B. By studying the REA book and working my [...] off before the final, I got that up to a final mark of A-. The physics students at my school used Griffith's electrmagnetics book, and they seemed to enjoy that book a lot more.

This book was slightly better when I took a waveguides course... imagine my disgust when I found out we were using this book, again! Even the waveguides sections were still quite weak, though, but they do keep me from rating this book a 1.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2006-04-11

While I took Electromagnetic Fields I & II courses using the first and last half of this text, I also purchased other solutions manuals and texts to survive. This was, to me, by far the most clearly written and well-presented text.
16 years after having taken the course, I'm doing a cover-to-cover review of this book and given my industry experience I appreciate the excellence of this book even more. The downside to using it is that I've found a real difficulty in locating the Solutions Manual, leaving me to use others where there's always changes in variables, ordering, and approaches which build in inefficiencies/overhead.

Book Description

The revision of this highly acclaimed text is designed for use in advanced physics courses--intermediate level juniors or first year graduates. Basic knowledge of vector calculus and Fourier analysis is assumed. In this edition, a very accessible macroscopic view of classical electromagnetics is presented with emphasis on integrating electromagnetic theory with physical optics. The presentation follows the historical development of physics, culminating in the final chapter, which uses four-vector relativity to fully integrate electricity with magnetism.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginning graduate students.......2003-12-20

This book covers many important topics in electromagnetic theory including many areas in Optics, like diffraction,..etc. It fills a gap between the undergrad text books and the more advance graduate EM texts (like Jackson's,.. etc). The materials are easy to follow and understand with no lack of mathematical rigors.
Execllent text for beginning graduate students.

4 out of 5 stars The former review is for the wrong book........2001-06-19

Hi folks I just wrote this to caution you that the former reviewer is inadverently reviewing the MECHANICS book by the same author. To be short I would give this book four stars. It does a little bit of static phenomena and boundary value problems and jumps to radiation justifying the title. The level of the book is in between a grad course and an undergrad course. I think it is ideal for self study for grad students.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging but well worth the effort for motivated students.......1999-06-20

An excellent textbook on classical dynamics for the 'grown-up' student who wants mathematical rigor along with physical insights. Working through this book requires considerable effort and thought on the student's part, but is well worth the time spent. Highly recommended for the serious student who is not afraid of hard work.

Book Description

An accessible and practical tool for effective antenna design
Due to the rapid development of wireless communications, the modeling of radiation and scattering is becoming more important in the design of antennas. Consequently, it is increasingly important for antenna designers and students of antenna design to have a comprehensive simulation tool.
Sergey Makarov's text utilizes the widely used Matlab(r) software, which offers a more flexible and affordable alternative to other antenna and electromagnetic modeling tools currently available. After providing the basic background in electromagnetic theory necessary to utilize the software, the author describes the benefits and many practical uses of the Matlab package. The text demonstrates how Matlab solves basic radiation/scattering antenna problems in structures that range from simple dipoles to patch antennas and patch antenna arrays. Specialized antenna types like fractal antennas and frequency selective surfaces are considered as well. Finally, the text introduces Matlab applications to more advanced problems such as broadband and loaded antennas, UWB pulse antennas, and microstrip antenna arrays.
For students and professionals in the field of antenna design, Antenna and EM Modeling with Matlab:
* Strikes an important balance between text and programming manual
* Provides numerous examples on how to calculate important antenna/target parameters
* Provides means for modifying existing codes for various individual projects
* Includes a CD-ROM with Matlab codes and antenna geometry files

The present MATLAB codes are only supported by MATLAB 5 and 6 (up to 2004).

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2002-11-21

The book is well written but not very extensive. It points to the applications right from the beggining and it is certainly of great value for students and engineers already engagged with Balanis Book on antenna theory. I strongly recommend Makarov's book for training students with a strong numerical methods background on electromagnetics, as a prerequisite before taking the course.

Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields
A Classic Reissue in the IEEE Press Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory
Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor
"When I begin a new research project, I clear my desk and put away all texts and reference books. Invariably, Harrington's book is the first book to find its way back to my desk. My copy is so worn that it is falling apart."--Dr. Kendall F. Casey, SRI
"In the opinion of our faculty, there is no other book available that serves as well as Professor Harrington's does as an introduction to advanced electromagnetic theory and to classic solution methods in electromagnetics."--Professor Chalmers M. Butler, Clemson University
First published in 1961, Roger Harrington's Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields is one of the most significant works in electromagnetic theory and applications. Over the past forty years, it proved to be a key resource for students, professors, researchers, and engineers who require a comprehensive, in-depth treatment of the subject. Now, IEEE is reissuing the classic in response to requests from our many members, who found it an invaluable textbook and an enduring reference for practicing engineers.

4 out of 5 stars Desk Reference.......2007-01-26

This is a very usefull and accurate reference. This is a very technical book that will give you the answers to wave form propagations and dynamics of waveforms without focusing on specific antenna types. Like any engineering type book it can be dry as is the nature of most technical books. Highly recommended for the graduate level and above.

5 out of 5 stars Harrington keeps things simple, but no simpler ..........2005-02-04

This is a classic graduate textbook for Advanced Electromagnetics courses. One of the main things that I liked the most about this book is Dr. Harrington's strict adherence to one of Dr. Einstein's principles: "make things simple, but no simpler" - which works perfect for a graduate-level textbook. I am not implying that this book is difficult to follow than other commonly used graduate texts ("Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics" by Balanis comes to mind). In fact, this book is much easier to read and follow than books that tend to derive everything for you (which simply ends up cluttering your thought process with too much detail instead of focussing on the main concept in question). Read the chapter on "Cylindrical Waves" and compare it with its equivalent in Balanis's book, and you will understand my point. This book is quintessential for graduate students contemplating a career in Computational Electromagnetics.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Roger !.......2005-01-28

When I was first introduced to Electro-Magnetics (EM), I thought of Harrington's book as one of these oldies which senior professors have sitting on a dusty shelf. To the novice who I was it lacked the modern flair of the recent publications. Time went on, I took classes which tought me mathematical & numerical recipes, yet left me with little understanding of EM phenomenons. Soon enough and by my own fault I forgot the basic principles while concentrating on the math, and I lost interest. As a microwave design engineer later on I kept bumping into problems which had not yet been discussed in the litterature or for which I needed a simpler solution than the numerical approaches that are in fashion. I looked for the book which would offer the right mix of theoritical treatment and engineering relevance for the likes of me. I noticed that Harrington's was the most quoted one in the litterature just about, and thought that there must be a good reason for this. So I ordered a copy. I went through it with a pen in hand and solved the exercises at the end of each chapter. It was frustrating at first, because I had long lost the habit of manipulating the basic math of EM. I kept at it however, as the more I read the more I realised how much I ignored. I even got the taste for EM over time. Harrington's thus became a reference to which I turn almost every time I face a new EM problem. From a didactic point of view it is about the best textbook I have ever come across. Also it has more relevance to modern EM engineering than it seems at first sight: one will even find a mention of the coplanar waveguide (p.135)! I warmly recommend it to both the engineer and the student. But remember: read it with a pen in hand, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter! A couple of shortcomings I ought to mention though: the stationary formula for the input impedance of a wire dipole radiator (7.9) is not well explained (see Jordan & Balmain's, 14.09), nor are stationary formulae for the impedance matrix of general networks (3.8). Still: a very good buy. Harrington's "Field Computation by Moment Methods" is an other good one by the way.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......1999-06-19

I was introduced to this classic while I was a master's (M.Tech) student at IIT Kharagpur, India in 1981.

Prof. Harrington's very pithy approach provoked me to think deeply on the subject. It is because of this book that my interest in the subject has been alive and vibrant today.

I met Prof. Harrington for the 1st time at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Conference at Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1993. Prof. Harrington comforted me by saying that he has no plans to do any alterantions to this classic text in the near future.

This book is not for the indolent and hence is not for causal reading like many lengthy and `verbose' textbooks on this subject. However, if I have ever an opportunity for organizing a 1st-year graduate course on EM theory, I shall use Harrington. Why wouldn't you ?

After you read this book you will think that Jackson's 'Classical Electrodynamic' is brief and easy. I was required to learn for my job the physics of waveguides.
I purchased this book because it was recommended by Jackson. In fact Jacksons chapter on waveguide is a summery of what you can find it here.
Although very difficullt to read you can find all information about guided waves you need. I was never required to go beyond this book.

5 out of 5 stars The "Divina Commedia" of Applied Electromagnetism!.......2000-06-10

Simply staten this is one of the finest books ever written in applied electromagnetics. There is a deligthful analytical treatment of everything related to wave-propagation in waveguides. But Mr Collin is not a dry-hearted teacher ,he is able to explain very complicated mathematical instruments with a very clear and fresh approach.Expecially good is the Green Function's treatment which is the best i ever saw in any book.Reading this book you will be able to progress from the intermediate to the very advanced level in Applied Electromagnetism. While it is true that nowadays there is a lot of software around that analyses almost every conceivable structure,it is also true that a analytical study gives you the possibility to sort the important from the accessory ,a thing no computer system is still able to do.I reccomend this book to anyone interested in advanced Electromagnetism.Only bad point is the price ,which is too much high expecially with the weak Euro we have now .On the whole a "top" book:5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for those with an existing background in EM.......2003-10-24

I used this book during my MSEE research and found it to be invaluable. While I also had the benefit of the principal author being my Advisor, this book easily stands by itself. This book describes several different methods and concepts in the computational analysis of EM problems, including issues related to computer optimization. It's somewhat dense in that the authors assume you already have a thorough knowledge of EM, so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. If you work in the field, however, this book is a must-have.

    Book Description

An in-depth understanding of electromagnetics is important to all electrical engineers regardless of specialization. Iskander presents the phenomena associated with electromagnetic fields and waves without bogging down the reader with equations and mathematical relations, keeping emphasis on the interesting subject and exciting applications of electromagnetics. The text describes the properties of the static electric and magnetic fields in terms of their charge and current sources before introducing Maxwell's equations. Additional features include a detailed description of reflection and refraction of plane waves of oblique incidence on a dielectric surface, a detailed introduction to antennas, comprehensive treatment of transmission lines, and an introductory section on numerical techniques. Many examples are used in each chapter to demonstrate the physical interpretation of vector operations and electromagnetic field quantities.

1 out of 5 stars This books sucks.......2007-10-14

This books sucks ballz. It contains many mistakes, it has very poor explanations, few examples, and huge leaps from one step to the next in the solutions. It's totally worthless as a textbook and may be marginally useful as a reference. I purchased two other well-respected books on electromagnetism to replace this doorstop. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for my grades to turn around.

    3 out of 5 stars Ok Book.......2005-09-29

The book itself is only so-so I feel. I have taken two classes with Dr. Iskander and he uses it as a reference, and does point out where the errors are. The classes I find were/are great, he clearly knows and loves the material. The book though does not as clearly explain the principles as others I have come across.

    4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2002-11-24

We used this book for a two quarter sequence in EM. The book is very solid and thorough in the begining with Maxwell's Equations. It is a little empty concerning static fields with only one chpater devoted to it. It is, however, a very readable texbook with most of the answers in the back

3 out of 5 stars like the book? try dealing with the author.......2002-01-29

I think that the book was alright but only because the author was teaching the course. The man is insane to be sure. Some of the lost details were filled in by his lecture while others were left as an exercise. I wish that I never had seen this book or taken this course.

We used this book in our electromagnetics class at UT Austin. I did not like this book at all. It did not clearly explain many concepts. Further there were many errors in the book, for example, in the sample problems. The result was that you were never sure if you didn't understand what was being explained or if in fact the book was just plain wrong. This is not a good book for learning electromagnetics.

5 out of 5 stars Research on Cancer and Regeneration and the effects of electro magnetic fields.......2007-07-31

    1. "Most technological cures for cancer, for example, were found to be carcinogenic themselves"
    2. From the beginning, life has been dependent on Earth's natural electromagnetic environment. Today this natural environment is submerged beneath a torrent of electromagnetic fields that have never before been present...In Cross Currents I will show how both the human body electric and the Earth's body electric have been damaged by this alteration; I will then explain what steps we must take to prevent the disaster that is fast approaching.
    3. Hospitals were becoming dangerous places to enter; patients sometimes entered with minor illnesses and left with permanent disabilities resulting from complication after another. Some patients discovered the various disciplines of energy medicine, which appeared to have three outstanding things to offer. First, they would do no harm; second, they often seemed to do some good; and third, they were much less expensive than orthodox medicine.
    4. The physicist, biologist, and physicians were absolutely certain that life forces simply did not exist, and that all living things were simply chemical machines. They knew that the living organism was simply a collection of structures, which work chemically and were integrated by means of central nervous system, with no involvement of electricity or magnetism.
    5. Nature must have a mechanism of self-repair; otherwise, life would not have succeeded. Self-repair requires a closed-loop control system-that is, one in which a certain signal indicates injury and causes another signal to effect repair. As the repair proceeds, the injury signal diminishes, and when the repair is complete the signal stops.
    6. Salamander limbs regenerate at the Neuroepidermal junction and negative electric current signals primitive cells in the blastema to redifferentiate and growth back the limb. As the blastema grows, the salamander current becomes highly negative and slowly returns to its original baseline.
    7. In a number of experiments, I was able to show that the DC electric currents I was measuring from a variety of tissues, including nerve fibers, were actual semiconducting. As a result of interest stirred up by these experiments, many people began to make electrical measurements of other growth processes. All rapid growing tissues were found to be negative in polarity. Interestingly, cancers in animals or humans always showed the highest negativity.
    8. The frog's red cells could be dedifferentiated by electricity, but only with vanishing small amounts (measured in the billionths of amperes). Electricity was clearly a stimulus to regeneration. Instructions to regenerate were retained by mammals. Therefore, the growth control system required for regeneration was present. For electricity to turn on the control system for regeneration the right amount of electricity and right polarity was required.
    9. I proposed that the acupuncture pointes were just such booster amplifiers, spaced along the course of the meridian transmission lines. Metallic acupuncture needles inserted in or near such a point would produce sufficient electrical disturbance that the amplifier could not operate, and the pain would be blocked.
Input DC electrical signals carried the information that injury had occurred along the acupuncture medians to the brain, where parts of this group of signals reached consciousness and was perceived as pain. Output DC signals caused the cells and chemical mechanisms at the site of injury to produce repair.
    11. In the 1880s, Dr Allison Apostoli treated cancers of the cervix and uterus with DC electricity by inserting a positive electrode into the tumor and passing between 100 to 250 milliamperes of current through the tumor to a large negative electrode on the abdomen producing electrolysis within the tumor. He reported prompt relief of pain and bleeding, and shrinkage of the tumors, but he reported no long-term results.
    12. All rapidly growing tissues were found to be negative in polarity compared with the rest of the body. The highest negativity was found in malignant tumors. In 1977, Doctors Muriel Schaubel and Mutaz Habel used stainless steel needles inserted directly into the tumors. Doctors Schaubel and Habel used three leves of current: 3 milliamperes, ½ milliampre, and 960 millimicroamperes. With the 3 Ma current there was significant destruction of the tumor, with about twice as much at the positive as the negative location. At the ½ MA there was destruction of the tumor at the positive electrode. At the lowest level of current there was a reduction in the weight of the tumors with both the positive and negative electrodes. The conclusion was the tumor destruction was the result of local electrolysis at the needle electrode.
    13. The local toxicity of electricity kills cancer cells, but the real hazard is stimulating other cancer growth with the use of electricity.
    14. Dr Kenneth McLean claimed that rats inoculated with cancer survived if they were treated with extremely high strength DC magnetic fields.
    15. Pulsed magnetic field treatment for bone nonunions also has been reported to slow the growth of animal tumors. Pulsed magnetic fields have a major effect on the stress-response system. Exposure of the whole animal for a short time causes a rapid stress response, with a marked increase in the activity of the immune system. For a time, the immune system has the upper hand and defeats an increased growth of the cancer. However, continuing the exposure beyond the short term results in a decline of the stress response and the immune system falls to below normal levels. Tumor-cell growth is then enhanced by both the drop in immune-system efficiency and the direction of the pulsed magnetic field on the cancer cells themselves.
    16. Dr Becker discovered that some human cancer cells in a culture appeared to dedifferentiate when exposed to electrically generated silver ions. An electrical-charge transfer sends a signal to the nucleus of the cancer cell that activates the primitive type genes, and the cell dedifferentiates.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!.......2006-08-30

If you really want to understand how the body works and is being influenced by our environment you must read this book. What an eye-opener. The author is someone thinking ahead of his time and much of what he predicted has come true.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional book by a doctor ahead of his time.......2006-06-19

Dr. Becker is a brilliant medical researcher who has devoted his life to the study of something most doctors barely understand that it exists: the body's electrical system.

Among many other topics, Dr. Becker describes
    - the body's inbuilt electrical systems,
    - how he was able to use electrical current to get bones that would otherwise not have grown together to do so,
    - how he offered to create a means of inducing anesthesia with electrical currents, but was politely turned down by lesser doctors,
    - how one can measure electrical currents flowing at acupuncture points (in other words, why there must be something to acupuncture),
    - why he thinks there may be something to homeopathy,
    - to what extent electrical systems play a role in the salamander's ability to regenerate tissue,
    - the harm that (everyday) electromagnetic fields can cause.

The tragedy of Dr. Becker is that he is so far ahead of his time that he is largely overlooked. All the same he sometimes paints with a little too broad a brush. All the same, I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the life sciences.

5 out of 5 stars Electromedicine: Putting it on a scientific footing.......2006-04-05

Dr Robert O Becker is an orthopaedic surgeon who researched cell/limb regeneration and ended up as an expert on the effects of electricity on the body. His work puts a sound scientific basis to the area of electric fields. He quotes dozens of studies which are "sensitive" and brings together various disparate sources into a coherent whole.

This book precedes his meeting with Dr Robert Beck (who expanded the application and understanding of electro-medicine) and expands on his previous book (The body electric). As I know that Dr Beck got a lot out of his meetings with Dr Becker... I've been hoping Dr Becker likewise benefitted from the relationship... and would write a follow up.

A surprising book. Covering topics you don't expect to find mentioned. A book with credibility. A book full of useful facts. A book that advances our knowledge of electronic hazards significantly.

Well done... please write another one!

    5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2003-03-20

This book, by a prominent medical researcher and practitioner, is one of the most well written and interesting of it's type. In fact, I was unable to put it down once I started reading. Initially interested in possible hazards of electropollution, and also medical uses of electric current, I learned quite a bit from Dr. Becker's book; and I found myself asking more questions, and looking for other sources. Written for the layman, this book is authoritatively referenced with all the professionalism you would expect from a man of the author's caliber. Highly recommended!
