Book Description
This introduction provides an in-depth, comprehensive treatment of a collection of classical and state-space approaches to control system design. It ties the methods together so that a designer is able to pick the method that best fits the problem at hand. Includes case studies and comprehensive examples with close integration of MATLAB throughout. Clearly marks problems to indicate which section they are drawn from for easier reference. Provides a logical presentation of a control engineer’s approach to key problems (such as rejection of disturbances, improvement in steady-state errors, and better dynamic response); compares the performance of the feedback structure to that of open-loop control. A useful reference for aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineers who want to brush up on their skills in dynamic systems.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for experienced engineers.......2007-06-14
I found lots of answers to practical situations encountered in electro-mech. systems. If you are working with signals, this book gives you good advice in general, and sufficient theory background to back it up. It is well written and has lots of plots - uses Matlab.
Excellent book for an introductory control design course..........2007-05-01
As a student learning this material, I have to say that from beginning to end, just about everything you'd want to know about control system design is in this book. Well compiled and collated off, with enough pictures to satisfy any engineer, I've got the important pages tabbed and it's now a part of my permanent reference library. The examples and the motivations behind everything done in the book are enough to get you designing your own feedback control systems.
A few things you should know: the book examples jump around a LOT. Examples from chapter 7 draw on diagrams and examples in chapter 4, etc... and consecutive pages will often refer to figures and diagrams that aren't even on the current page, nor will they tell you where they are sometimes. I found myself flipping back and for and back and forth often when trying to follow examples or read chapters.
Second, I really hope you aren't trying to learn control system design without MATLAB. All I gotta say is... DON'T. For example: the intricacies of linear quadratic regulator theory are not as important as learning how to apply it in a design project. Plus, the iterative nature of control system design means that you will want to save your process as an m-file. Don't try this stuff without a copy of, or access to a copy of MATLAB.
There are better options.......2006-07-10
I own several books on Control Systems (including this one), but if you have to buy just one and you are in the process of choosing it, I would recommend Katsuhiko Ogata's Modern Control Engineering.
This is not a good textbook for a beginner, and considering its price, it's not a good buy.
Sucks.......2005-09-28
Well first off the book does not do a good job of providing sufficient examples on how to do things. On top of that the solution manual you can get online through those 2 ppl that are selling it is useless. It has all the problems worked out wrong...just my luck!
Good Sections on PID and Multivariable.......2005-06-15
As a practicing engineer, I found the book's sections on PID controllers and Multivariable control to be more informative than my other references, including the venerable Ogata.
Though perhaps the objections listed in the other reviews are valid when the text is used for an introductory course, I would just like to point out the text had value for me in understanding real-world PID controllers. Not sure if I would recommend it over Ogata for an introductory course, though.
Both Ogata and this text make extensive use of Matlab, which is almost a requirement to have in order to follow the examples. The author makes available all his Matlab source code on his website, as well.
Book Description
This well-respected, market-leading text discusses the use of digital computers in the real-time control of dynamic systems. The emphasis is on the design of digital controls that achieve good dynamic response and small errors while using signals that are sampled in time and quantized in amplitude. Both classical and modern control methods are described and applied to illustrative examples. The strengths and limitations of each method are explored to help the reader develop solid designs with the least effort. Two new chapters have been added to the third edition offering a review of feedback control systems and an overview of digital control systems. Updated to be fully compatible with MATLAB versions 4 and 5, the text thoroughly integrates MATLAB statements and problems to offer readers a complete design picture. The new edition contains up-to-date material on state-space design and twice as many end-of-chapter problems to give students more opportunities to practice the material.

Very nice book on digital control theory.......2006-04-19
This book is a very nice one among those on the same topic. It covers all theory that we should know about digital control in addition to a neat review of continuous control. Besides, it provides insight for understanding real systems along with Matlab examples and good problems. The way the authors wrote the book is clear and and in turn they offer the reader a pretty good and comprehensive approach. I recommend it!
Great Book for Engineers.......2005-01-09
I'am primarily a VLSI design engineer who is working on a product involving digital control. The book by Franklin and co. helped me get off to a quick start. It has a lot of practical examples which will be useful to engineers. It teaches the underlying theory , proposes a method to solve problems and also gives the appropriate MATLAB commands. However , personally I'am not able to get a solid grasp of the material by reading this book alone. For a more complete and rigorous coverage I recommend Discrete Control by Benjamin Kuo.
Mr Jones reviews.......2001-01-23
Generally an excellent book with many worked examples. Unfortunately there seem to be a few irritating errors. One error concerns section 13.3.1. The cost function in this example is set for a bandwidth of 1Hz. This is also indicated in Figure 13.70. However, the parameters a,b given in Figure 13.71 (and those found by the search algorithm) are correct for a bandwidth value of 10Hz. Incidentally, the third edition (student edition) of the book seems to be made of thinner paper than the second edition. I feel the book makes rather too much of quantisation effects and sample rate selection. It might be better to replace these chapters with a new chapter on model predictive control.
Digital Control of Dynamic Systems done right!.......2000-01-14
This book excellent for anyone interested in the Digital Control of Dynamic Systems. This book is Reccomended as a tool for Matlab implementation of control Systems. Very good book!

Book Description
This volume presents a comprehensive introduction into rigorous geometrical dynamics of complex systems of various natures. By "complex systems", in this book are meant high-dimensional nonlinear systems, which can be (but not necessarily are) adaptive. This monograph proposes a unified geometrical approach to dynamics of complex systems of various kinds: engineering, physical, biophysical, psychophysical, sociophysical, econophysical, etc. As their names suggest, all these multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems have something in common: the underlying physics. Using sophisticated machinery composed of differential geometry, topology and path integrals, this book proposes a unified approach to complex dynamics â of predictive power much greater than the currently popular "soft-science" approach to complex systems. The main objective of this book is to show that high-dimensional nonlinear systems in "real life" can be modeled and analyzed using rigorous mathematics, which enables their complete predictability and controllability, as if they were linear systems. The book has two chapters and an appendix. The first chapter develops the geometrical machinery in both an intuitive and rigorous manner. The second chapter applies this geometrical machinery to a number of examples of complex systems, including mechanical, physical, control, biomechanical, robotic, neurodynamical and psycho-social-economical systems. The appendix gives all the necessary background for comprehensive reading of this book.

Book Description
Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control provides a solid foundation in dynamic modeling, analysis, and control of space vehicles. More than 200 figures, photographs, and tables are featured in detailed sections covering the fundamentals of controlling orbital, attitude, and structural motions of space vehicles.
The textbook highlights a range of orbital maneuvering and control problems: orbital transfer, rendezvous, and halo orbit determination and control. Rotational maneuvering and attitude control problems of space vehicles under the influence of reaction jet firings, internal energy dissipation, or momentum transfer via reaction wheels and control moment gyros are treated in detail. The textbook also highlights the analysis and design of attitude control systems in the presence of structural flexibility and/or propellant sloshing. At the end of each chapter, Dr. Wie includes a helpful list of references for graduate students and working professionals studying spacecraft dynamics and control. A bibliography of more than 350 additional references in the field of spacecraft guidance, control, and dynamics is also provided at the end of the book.
Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control requires a thorough knowledge of vector and matrix algebra, calculus, ordinary differential equations, engineering mechanics, and linear system dynamics and control. The first two chapters provide a summary of such necessary background material. Since some problems may require the use of software for the analysis, control design, and numerical simulation, readers should have access to computational software (i.e., MATLAB) on a personal computer.
Customer Reviews:
The best in its area.......2006-09-21
This is a rather complete presentation of the knowledge of controls and dynamics needed to design, specify, and analyze spacecraft control sytems. No navigation or guidance is covered. Of course no reference to same is made in the title. The book is primarily a composition of basic control background including modern topics like H-infinity. The H-infinity control discussion is the most understandable out there and its limitations are spelled out clearly, perhaps for the first time. The structural dynamics and controls sections are outstanding with some novelty. Interleaving is not unique to this book, however. Bryson covers it in Control of Spacecraft and Aircraft. Quite frankly, at this point in time most of the spacecraft controller design methodologies are handbook in nature and what is most needed is a good background in the basics that extends into the actual design domain enough to be useful. Bong Wie has provided that in this book for controller design to a greater extend than any other written thus far.
A great addition to the literature.......2000-03-30
Bong Wie's "Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control" is, by far, one of the best books ever published in the AIAA Education Series. It packs a lot of info on a multitude of subjects which don't usually come together in a single book. The mathematical preliminaries and the sections on dynamics and control of flexible structures are particularly well done. (This is perhaps the first time a textbook covers the interlacing property of poles & zeros of certain transfer functions, particularly those associated with flexible structures.) In addition, the inclusion of the "H-infinity" topic the way the author did it is very good since, in general, books do not feature the subject in such a concise, objective, useful way. The same is true of the section on halo orbits, as well. Best of all, Wie's having included Kharitonov's theorem comes as a blessing, since the issue is rarely seen in non-European texts.
Unfortunately, in its present form (first edition), the book is not without its flaws. The alphabetical index should indicate explicitly where one can find subjects like the aforementioned interlacing property, as well as bang-bang-type controls. Also, a couple of topics have been omitted altogether: yo-yo devices (possibly deemed too simple) and the more advanced issues pertaining to the extremely important time-varying nonlinear systems (e.g.: time-varying eigenvalues). This is arguably OK, as this last subject, requiring a lot of preliminary material on operator theory, might be considered too advanced for a non-systems book, especially one in the Education Series.
In closing, one must acknowledge Bong Wie for bringing this more-than-welcome addition to the controls literature.

Book Description
Active noise control (ANC) is rapidly becoming the most effective way to reduce noises that can otherwise be very difficult and expensive to control. ANC is achieved by introducing a canceling "anti-noise" wave through an appropriate array of secondary sources. When applied accurately, ANC can provide effective solutions to noise-related problems in a broad range of areas, including manufacturing and industrial operations as well as consumer products. Consequently, ANC research and development has become an important focus of both industrial applications and engineering research.
Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations introduces the basic concepts of ANC with an emphasis on digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms, both of which have come into prominence within the last decade. The authors emphasize the practical aspects of ANC systems by combining the principles of adaptive signal processing with both experimental results and practical implementation. Applications are cited in many fields and encompass all types of noise media, including air-acoustic, hydroacoustic, vibrations, and others. The specific implementation stressed is based on the TMS320 family of signal processors from Texas Instruments, which are the most widely used worldwide.
Coverage of theory includes concise derivations and analyses of commonly used adaptive structures and algorithms for active noise control applications, which are enhanced by the inclusion of a floppy disk featuring C and assembly programs for implementing many ANC systems. Mathematical representations are employed and the source code included on the disk is in a form that is easily accessible to anyone using the book.
For practicing engineers, researchers, and advanced students in signal processing, Active Noise Control Systems: Algorithms and DSP Implementations will serve as a comprehensive, state-of-the-art text/reference on this important and rapidly developing field.
The recent development of digital signal processing (DSP) hardware and adaptive signal processing algorithms has resulted in a dynamic new way of achieving active noise control (ANC). To meet the need for a definitive text on both the basic theory and practical applications of these new ANC techniques, Sen M. Kuo and Dennis R. Morgan have written an invaluable, highly accessible book for researchers, engineers, and advanced students in signal processing.
A state-of-the-art presentation of ANC from innovators in the field
Thorough coverage of the theoretical principles behind ANC techniques with rational and consistent notation
Numerous illustrations for easy interpretation of complex algorithms
Unique emphasis on the practical applications of ANC systems from the viewpoint of signal processing and DSP implementation within the framework of ANC systems
Accompanying software that can be used to implement many ANC systems discussed in the text

Review from signal processing View.......2002-12-12
This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.
review from signal processing view.......2002-12-12
This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.
The best reference for ANC algorithms.......1999-08-20
This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.
excellent collection of information.......1999-01-02
serves as a valuable tool regarding my project on AN

Customer Reviews:
Good book, but consider a used copy!.......2007-06-14
This "2001 edition" (according to Amazon) was actually copyrighted in 1979. While the book remains very useful, prospective consumers may wish to consider a good used copy in order to save some money.
Although the publication date is misleading, at least Wiley correctly prints the original copyright date within its "new" texts (there are other examples of this practice). Springer-Verlag performs still greater magic. In "Linear and Nonlinear Programming", also by Luenberger, Springer decided to print the copyright date as 2003 instead of 1984, thus giving the impression that the text contains an up-to-date treatment of the subject matter. If I were buying a copy of "Green Eggs and Ham", I would not care about an incorrect copyright date. However, where technical subjects are concerned, this practice borders on fraud (in my view). It is a deliberate attempt to deceive its customers into believing that they are purchasing something more current and relevant than is actually the case.
Excellent treatment of dynamic systems.......2001-05-03
This introduction to dynamic systems is presented with an algebraic formalism which makes things clear and concise. All concepts are explained intuitively as well as formally, having in mind the objective of making things clear. Few books exhibit such a good approach and other reviewers are right when they emphasize the highly pedagogical quality of Luenberger's books ! This is no overstatement.
The advantage of using this algebraic formulation lies in the simplicity as well as the understandability of the state-space approach, which is best explained in those terms. Most books assume that everyone knows what a state space is without explicitly showing what it is really about. This book just uses the reverse assumption, in that you're not asssumed to know everything before getting into it.
Only some basic knowledge in algebra (undergraduate-level) is required but even without experience in algebraic formalism, it is possible to go through the content thanks to the important number of examples and the intuitive explanations.
A must-read !
Excellent supplementary reading of Linear System Theory.......1999-04-24
The economic application examples are interesting for engineering students.
The best mathematical textbook ever written.......1999-02-19
I studied this book for two semesters as a doctoral student, and consider it the best mathematical textbook ever written. Luenberger writes concisely and with great clarity and elegance. His notation is crisp and easy to follow. The book begins with basic concepts of matrix algebra and dynamic equations, and then builds step-by-step to encompass an enormously broad set of applications. The examples are drawn from all over the map, and are great fun to explore. This is a truly mind-expanding text.
Thomas P. Lyon, Associate Professor, Business Economics and Public Policy, Indiana University
Book Description
The technology of neural networks has attracted much attention in recent years. Their ability to learn nonlinear relationships is widely appreciated and is utilized in many different types of applications; modelling of dynamic systems, signal processing, and control system design being some of the most common. The theory of neural computing has matured considerably over the last decade and many problems of neural network design, training and evaluation have been resolved. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the most popular class of neural network, the multilayer perceptron, and shows how it can be used for system identification and control. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficient theoretical background to understand the characteristics of different methods, to be aware of the pit-falls and to make proper decisions in all situations. The subjects treated include: System identification: multilayer perceptrons; how to conduct informative experiments; model structure selection; training methods; model validation; pruning algorithms. Control: direct inverse, internal model, feedforward, optimal and predictive control; feedback linearization and instantaneous-linearization-based controllers. Case studies: prediction of sunspot activity; modelling of a hydraulic actuator; control of a pneumatic servomechanism; water-level control in a conical tank. The book is very application-oriented and gives detailed and pragmatic recommendations that guide the user through the plethora of methods suggested in the literature. Furthermore, it attempts to introduce sound working procedures that can lead to efficient neural network solutions. This will make the book invaluable to the practitioner and as a textbook in courses with a significant hands-on component.

all about the perceptron for control systems.......2007-01-07
Much of the book might already be familiar to a reader involved with neural networks. The authors give a recap of decades of progress into using multilayer networks in a feedback mode. Key sections of the text discuss the weighting of the nodes and how you can realistically compute these weights.
But the emphasis differs from most existing texts on neural networks. Here, the authors explain how you might control a dynamical system that could exhibit pronounced nonlinearities. The book is pitched towards someone from control systems theory. The latter has been highly developed, to handle both linear and nonlinear systems. However, if you consult standard texts on control systems, neural networks rarely (if ever) garner a mention. This book tries to correct that deficiency.
it works!.......2006-01-18
This is an excellent book. It contains theory and essential exaples for system identification and control based on ANN approach. The authors have also a WEB site where additional information and the toolboxes (MATLAB format) can be found.
The programs work an they are easy to understand and run.
I first tried the toolboxes (the user manuals are included with the toolboxes) and then ordered the book. It is worth having both. I highly recommend it, specially if you are a newbie in ANN but need a fast start.
Cheers!
