Book Description

This classic text takes an applied and computer-oriented approach to its topical coverage. The book is intended for one or two semester courses in biostatistics at the undergraduate or graduate level offered by departments of biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, nursing and other allied health disciplines, and is also used in some departments of forestry and animal husbandry. Nearly all the examples and exercises make use of real data from actual research projects and reports from health sciences literature. Where appropriate, Minitab, SPSS and SAS commands and printouts are included as part of the examples and solutions to exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but technical.......2006-11-10

This book is extreamly helpful for academic research. It can be somewhat more technical than most people would need.

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as I first thought.......2005-09-23

Daniel obviously knows his statistics; but, I wouldnt think that is too helpful for individuals reading or studying from his textbook.
The reasons are numerous, and all these reasons would reduce anyone's chances of solely using this book, or even using it at all.
The textbook is well organized, however Daniel's writing often is pedantic, repetitive (not in the helpful way) and ambiguous at best.
The examples and solutions occassionaly have serious errors in them which affect the overall outcome of the test (A second consideration is that the book is in it's 8th edition!!! therefore such errors are unacceptable for a person such as myself).
An example can be found on page 239 (example 7.3.2). The pooled variance, as calculated by Daniel is approximately off by 100 simply because he didnt give attention to dividing the numerator with the proper pooled D.F of the samples. The chapter ironically was on hypothesis tests, something extremely important to any line of empirically oriented statistics.

In Chapter 8; which is probably the most important chapter in Bistatistics (ANOVAs) he does not mention the relationship between MSW and sample SD. Also, his usage of Summation in formulas often are unnecessarily overcomplicated. Such is not even seen in professional journals.

I did like this textbook regardless of its many shortcomings, its not because I liked the author's style of writing. Its more or less the fact that my lecturer (I assume) used this book heavily in his lectures and so I used it as a supplementary text.

I would suggest, Chap T. Le's Introductory Biostatistics. However he goes too much into nonparametric methods and proportions and doesnt cocentration (to the degree I wanted) on continous data.

More robust and probably cost effect books are :Introductory Statistics for the Life Sciences by Samuels. But the Best book I have ever seen on the subject is "Introductory Biostatistics for the health sciences" By Chernick and Friis. The book is well priced and no portion of this book, I have seen as being useless.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text for 2nd Statistics Class.......2004-10-25

I'm taking my first biostatistics class in medical school, but the text I am using in class (Rosner) has lost me. I subsequently borrowed Daniel's book from the library (only because it has 7th editions), and I am glad that I picked it! Daniel is a good writer. The book is well organized and laid out. Important concepts are emphased and explained with minimum mathematics involved. The well thought out examples are worth working through as well for clarification of the applications of important concepts. However, as a beginner in statistics, I was lost in the midst of mathematics on certain concepts (given that I have a relatively strong mathematics background) without really understanding the meaning of some very basic terms, like percentile, confidence intervals.

What I do is to read another reference book that explains the very basic concepts in plain English first before reading this text. I am currently using Munro's Statistical Methods for Health Care Research. While both of them cover the same set of concepts, Daniel gives me the mathematical and more advanced explainations compare to Munro.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-12-19

I have used this and other texts by Daniel over the years and I find you can not go wrong with his works. He is a no nonsense author and a very good writer who uses plenty of examples. Get his nonparametric book also.

4 out of 5 stars Solid introductory reference.......2003-01-09

The title is very appropriate - this text provides a solid foundation in biostats. I used it for an intro course in grad school, and working through the text was very worthwhile. Previously cloudy concepts are now more clear, and I have a great reference for future use. More in-depth biostats deserves a consultation with a statistician, not a longer text. I agree with other reviewers that there are occasional mistakes (which need to be fixed - this is not even the first edition), but overall I would still highly recommend it.

This book is boring and basically is just another statistics book. if you have some sick twwisted interest in estimating error, buy this book otherwise find something more interesting. if you have to use this for a class, Im sorry, i feel your pain.

5 out of 5 stars Great for first year laboratory science.......2007-01-05

This book is written for the introductory physics student, but it helped me get a good understanding of experimental error in my chemistry lab. The author presents error analysis using simple scenerios and without going too deep into calculus and statistics.

Even if you have achieved a high level of mathematical sophistication, this book is a great read. I find myself gaining great new insights to basic principles due to Taylor's logical developments. This is simply the best available introductory text on error analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, easy, many examples.......2006-11-14

I used this book in high school to prepare for physics competitions. This is as good as I have seen it get. I only wish we used this book in college. The author goes through a lot of effort to explain and provide clear examples for every concept.

This text is a valuable companion for students of the sciences, or anyone interested in experimental error, its propagation or effects on experiments or products. Lacking mathematical rigor, the book is great for the beginner or non-Mathematician.

2 out of 5 stars Egh! Good science bad english.......2006-10-25

I'm a grad. student using this book, and understanding the written language amounts to same sensation as you would get during root canal. While examples are concise, pseudo-code is excellent, despite the few actual examples in Java, it covers vast range of topics rather well. But for crying out loud, hire an editor for the next edition that will break down paragraph long sentences and introduce some readability to the text! For that reason I tend to gravitate to my undergrad books for my current studies.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook.......2005-03-15

After researching a variety of alternatives, I settled upon using Algorithm Design by Goodrich and Tamassia to teach a junior-level algorithms course and the experience has been quite positive.

While instructor material grows a bit sparse in the last half or third of the book, it's still quite useful. The slides are great and many of the problems have solutions available. Moreover, the solutions tend to be correct (I've only found two mistakes, which may be covered in the up-to-date errata).

The layout of the sections and chapters is quite natural and easy to adapt to your own course, although the last third of the book is essentially an assortment of topics that didn't fit in anywhere else. I would advise bringing some of those topics in to the course early on as diversions from the main material, which admittedly can get a little dry.

For the most part, the book is well written with interesting and adequete end of chapter problems. There are relatively few Java-based examples, but we skipped over them anyhow -- the pseudo-code is quite acceptable. Goodrich and Tamassia give a broad survey of topics, but cover them in enough depth and with enough rigor for an undergraduate course where CLR(S) would be overkill. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction text to algorithms.......2002-12-18

I would not consider this book as the ultimate book for algorithms as the title suggests. :-) However, it is a very readable book, and filled with brief, but concise observations. Do not get me wrong. This book also has very detailed explanations of fundamental data structures and algorithms.

Also, the best part of the book is that it lists good references for further readings. I loved this book. I would suggest this book to others. Math hints at the back of the books are useful, and some excercises are quite brain challenging. I think it is a great practice for students, but it is not so fun when students get it for assignments. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Good Fundamentals.......2002-07-01

There are many good books with this title or similar ones. This is probably one of the better ones for your bookshelf and for use in academia. The examples are written in Java (a current language) and they are easy to read. The presentation is clean and illustrative. The authors have a good track record for expertise and papers published, and you get the sense that it is more real-world than most similar books.

Book Description

Handbook of Analysis and Its Foundations is a self-contained and unified handbook on mathematical analysis and its foundations. Intended as a self-study guide for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduatestudents in mathematics and a reference for more advanced mathematicians, this highly readable book provides broader coverage than competing texts in the area. Handbook of Analysis and Its Foundations provides an introduction to a wide range of topics, including: algebra; topology; normed spaces; integration theory; topological vector spaces; and differential equations. The author effectively demonstrates the relationships between these topics and includes a few chapters on set theory and logic to explain the lack of examples for classical pathological objects whose existence proofs are not constructive. More complete than any other book on the subject, students will find this to be an invaluable handbook. For more information on this book, see http://math.vanderbilt.edu/

5 out of 5 stars The author contrasts his two books.......2006-01-05

Handbook of Analysis and its Foundations was intended for beginning graduate students, or other people at approximately that level of mathematical sophistication. I strove for elegance and order.

Naturally, I'm pleased to see the favorable reviews on Amazon. But I'm a little surprised that HAF's introduction to logic was praised. Although HAF's treatment of set theory is both clear and insightful, HAF's treatment of logic is merely clear; I now see it as somewhat mechanical. I wrote it when I was a beginner in the subject, and did not have a lot of insight. For insights into logic, I recommend my later book, Classical and Nonclassical Logics.

CNL is intended for undergraduate students, a much more elementary audience, and so it has a different style: It is more repetitious and less elegant. Still, the computations in the early chapters do lead up to some very satisfying theoretical results in the later chapters, and I think I've managed to find and convey some real insight of what logic is about. (But see the book's web page before you buy the book.)

5 out of 5 stars Unusual, and Excellent Book.......2005-09-04

This book is unlike any other--as the author says, it's much like a collection of first chapters of graduate-level math texts. What makes this book unique and valuable are the connections drawn between all the different areas, as well as elementary presentations of certain key topics. I feel that this book, much like Lang's algebra, has the potential to redefine the way analysis is studied and taught.

Most analysis books go into much more depth and prove many more results--this book, in spite of its size, won't take you very far in the field, but the knowledge it cultivates is deep, and it will give you both breadth and a modern perspective. Instead of accepting one set of axioms, or one set of structures, and then proving a bunch of results, this book explores many different possible combinations of axioms, and structures, and explores which results hold in which cases. Numerous examples of some of the more abstract mathematical objects are provided. The book shows how different branches of mathematics relate to each other, drawing together set theory, algebra, topology, category theory, and many of the major branches of analysis.

Some parts of the book are elementary, focusing on the very foundations of mathematical ideas, language, notation, and proof, and these parts will be indispensable to young, maturing mathematicians. The discussion of constructivism and intangible objects is indispensable and is among the best exposition of these topics I have found in any texts; many functional analysis books make frequent use of intangibles without explicitly discussing them.

Other parts of this book are advanced and will be useful to experts. The chapter on convergence is an absolute gem, thoroughly exploring the relationship between the net and filter views of convergence. The material on measures and integration is highly general, probably more useful for experts than for beginning students. Overall, the writing is exceptionally clear: the material is presented from an introductory level, but the author presents it exhaustively, not glossing over exceptions or special cases. This book is simply unparalleled in the way it presents so much abstract material and yet is so easy to read.

Possibly the best aspect of this book is that it is up-to-date. Many analysis books have changed little since the 1950's. However, the field of analysis has changed greatly. If you're unfortunate enough to be stuck in a class or a program in which you are being taught the "old-fashioned way", this book will help you get up to speed with some of the more modern ways of looking at things. While it is not comprehensive (it barely touches topics like classical complex analysis or probability, and it will probably be less useful for applied mathematicians and people in related disciplines), I still think it is the single most important math book on my shelf. I would recommend every serious mathematician to purchase this book.

5 out of 5 stars The wonderful World of Mathematical Analysis.......2005-08-05

This guided tour through mathematical analysis and its foundations is quite different from all existing textbooks out there. The book emphazises the interconnections between different areas of mathematics. Apart from all the standard material found in all real analysis textbooks, it covers in detail material from algebra, logic and set theory, as it relates to analysis. The book really makes one see the larger picture.
It also allows one to draw finer distinctions. The book gives a great overview of various weak forms of the axiom of choice and their relative strength. It introduces the reader to other approaches to analysis like constructivism or nonstandard analysis. Questions that are usually glossed over are treated with care, omissions aren't covered.
Obviously, at about 800 pages, the book cannot treat every topic in depth. But even here the book excels. Equivalent and inequivalent definitions of concepts are presented and the reader can easily supplement his reading with other books. Where the way stops, it shows how to go further.
The book requires a good deal of mathematical maturity. The reader has to fill in many holes in the proofs, but they are still manageable. The book isn't harder to read than conventional graduate level textbooks, but the reader will profit much more. The exercises are well integratet and make the reader actually do them.

5 out of 5 stars From an amateur's point of view........2000-06-16

I've always wanted to know more math. Finally, I've discovered a big book that makes the tough stuff accessible without sacrificing detail or over-simplifying the hard concepts. For someone with a little bit of college math - calculus and maybe a few more courses - this is it. Analysis, abstract algebra, set theory, topology .... It's all here despite the focus on foundations. And it's organized in a way that makes it possible to follow the thread of a topic throughout the book without reading everything from the beginning. A CDROM version (the one I'm using) not only allows the sort of random access that makes surfing the book convenient but also presents the text in either HTML or PDF format. Open it up in a Java-enabled browser and you can play with the fonts until it suits your reading style. Ideally, for the reader, the CDROM might have been bundled with the book.

Books geared to self instruction need to enlist the readers' aid in educating themselves. Good teachers have that knack. It is a gift to be able to make complicated ideas understandable by building up gradually from simple and familiar concepts to ones that are unusual, obscure, or even initially incomprehensible. Eric Schecter must be a good teacher because in reading his book I am learning more math than I ever thought I would or could. I need to leave questions about the quality of the math itself in depth or scope to the judgment of the professionals but the text appears to make few concessions of substance to us amateurs. Armchair or would-be mathematicians as well as teachers and researchers might find this book a place in their personal libraries.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good text for an undergrad class.......2004-01-23

A very hands-on, applied bent to this book. Designed explicitly to cater to engineering undergraduates, it forsakes strict mathematical rigour for what is more useful to engineers. Namely, there is emphasis on numerous examples, that are fully described. So much so that they may be considered case studies.

The theme is one of a pragmatic approach to using statistics in an engineering context. Many algorithms are not presented as actual code in some computer language, but as pseudocode. This may be of use to an instructor wondering whether to use this book or not. The pseudocode readily lends itself to assignment problems where the student has to implement it in some actual source code. This has a moderate level of difficulty, and would be reasonable problems to assign. Each should not take more than a few hours (3?), assuming that the student is already competent in a computer language.

Book Description

Updated with modern coverage, a streamlined presentation, and an excellent CD-ROM, this fifth edition achieves a balance between theory and application. Author Charles H. Roth, Jr. carefully presents the theory that is necessary for understanding the fundamental concepts of logic design while not overwhelming students with the mathematics of switching theory. Divided into 20 easy-to-grasp study units, the book covers such fundamental concepts as Boolean algebra, logic gates design, flip-flops, and state machines. By combining flip-flops with networks of logic gates, students will learn to design counters, adders, sequence detectors, and simple digital systems. After covering the basics, this text presents modern design techniques using programmable logic devices and the VHDL hardware description language.

4 out of 5 stars College Text.......2007-05-15

I bought this book for my college class. I don't have it until this summer. It comes with a disk with two programs for programming digital logic.
Now that I have used the book it is good for logic but lacked in use at design. We supplemented with the Wiley book that was good. But Schaums outline was better then both texts. I would buy Digital Pricipals and rent the book if posible.

3 out of 5 stars Great Self Study Guide.......2006-10-21

I grade the first 20 chapters an A ... the remainder: a C+

This book is a great intro to logic design. Read it with John W Carters : Digital Design with Programmable Logic Devices ... to clear up state machine/synchronous binary
counter issues. And to get experience with real world design issues.

5 out of 5 stars Background comments.......2005-06-18

A few comments concerning the material and Dr. Roth. I had the pleasure of using the book while it was still being 'student tested' prior to publication back in the 1970s, and found the course so interesting that I proctored it the following semester. My background prior to taking what was at the time a senior level EE course included no EE whatsoever. The material was well-organized and presented in a consistent pedagogical manner that I find rare in technical textbooks.

I had the pleasure of taking courses with Dr. Roth, and wish to emphasize that he has a very strong interest in effective teaching, and in learning how to make learning more efficient. I found that, as a result, I was both challenged and inspired by one of the best university level instructors I have ever had.

I will also state that I have self-studied topics on numerous occasions, and I have found that 'programmed learning' is one of the most effective teaching methods yet devised.

I have not seen the current edition of 'Fundamentals', but based on my experience with the book since its infancy and my personal knowledge of Dr. Roth's abilities and interest in teaching this material, I would expect the book to be an excellent learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars New Fifth Edition correct flaws.......2004-08-02

I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.

This is a learn-by-example style of text. Not only are examples given in the body text, but the first end-of-chapter problems are worked out in detail, and solutions are given for many more. I consider this a fine book for enriching the material I'm presenting in class.

The old edition was dated and promoted design styles that are not advised. The new edition fixes those problems and this is now a great text. Three chapters introducing VHDL have been added after the chapter sequences on combinatorial logic, sequential logic, and digital systems. Thus VHDL doesn't intefere with the teaching of the fundamentals, but serves to enhance by providing the modern practices. The chapters are not thorough enough for practicing design in VHDL but are a good introduction. Relatively modern components are now used in the practical examples. I don't think anyone will mind that the chapters on asynchronous state machine design are gone.

The new text comes with a CD containing a simple VHDL simulator (which I have not tested), SimuAid (also untested) and Professor Roth's venerable LogicAid -- a combinatorial logic synthesis tool which if nothing else provides a means that students can check their hand-made designs. People using this text in self-study would probably find the CD paricularly useful, although it has little value in school settings where professional software tools are available.

5 out of 5 stars the best for excercises.......2002-11-23

i have been using both roth and mano for my digital design course at college and my experience is that roth is 'the' book for digital design.it is clear ,concise and to the point.mano seems to be a little too descriptive and sometimes drives you early to bed.however it is always good to refer to mano as for PLDs are concerned..

If you are interested to see what other companies are doing, who have no relevance to yours, this book is for you. If you are looking for practical guidance that you can use in your own situation, buy something else.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book, but read this for risk management fundamentals.......2004-12-26

After reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', I must say that I can recommend it. Buy it if you want to know how large companies have been dealing with risk management in the past years. This book will not really help you understand the fundamentals of risk management, and that isn't the primary focus of this book.

I would recommend that you do not read `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' just by itself. I highly recommend `Controlling the controllable: the management of safety' by Dr. Jop Groeneweg. This is a must-read if you are interested in risk management and it will give you an good basis for reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off'.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', unlike what may be suggested, isn't about companies on the cutting edge of risk management. In my opinion that's only partly true. These companies are dealing with highly visible risks, but in risk management that is the easy part of the job. Dealing with the invisible risks, most often those risks lurking in a company's own organization, is much harder. It is unfortunate that the Tripod risk management methodology isn't discussed in this book because it is THE methodology for integrated risk management.

I would recommend that those interested also read up on a risk management tool called BowTie XP, which really represents the leading edge of risk management research today. I believe the majority of companies in this book will be using BowTie XP for risk management in the coming years.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' is quite readable and I enjoyed reading it. When you read it, realize that risk management is evolving quickly. Don't try to copy the companies in this book with respect to risk management, unless you only want to deal with highly visible risks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lessons in De-Risking, in a Very Readable Book !.......2002-03-03

After the Enron meltdown, risk management is as hot as fire. You can?t pick up the newspaper without stories about all the risks facing businesses and investors.

I run a medium size business in a big city. If you want to ?de-risk? a company, you need to learn from managers who are already doing it and doing it well. This book has very detailed cases about the risk management programs at companies like Microsoft and DuPont with managers telling their own stories. The book is short on fancy theories and long on practical ideas.

I admit I was surprised to see Chase bank among these elite companies. Chase wrote off $500 million because of Enron. But you have to wonder how much more they would have written off without a good risk management program. No one ever said these systems are perfect. The Chase chapter even describes two big problems the bank had with their bookkeeping and how they were fixing them.

This book has everything you need to get started in a good risk management program. Lord knows businesses had better manage their risks or they?re history.

Book Description

Probabilistic risk analysis aims to quantify the risk caused by high technology installations in situations where classical statistical analysis is difficult or impossible. This book discusses the fundamental notion of uncertainty, its relationship with probability, and the limits to the quantification of uncertainty. Drawing on extensive experience in the theory and applications of risk analysis, the authors focus on the conceptual and mathematical foundations underlying the quantification, interpretation and management of risk. They cover standard topics as well as important new subjects such as the use of expert judgment and uncertainty propagation.

    Book Description

What effects do laws have? Do individuals drive more cautiously, clear ice from sidewalks more diligently, and commit fewer crimes because of the threat of legal sanctions? Do corporations pollute less, market safer products, and obey contracts to avoid suit? And given the effects of laws, which are socially best? Such questions about the influence and desirability of laws have been investigated by legal scholars and economists in a new, rigorous, and systematic manner since the 1970s. Their approach, which is called economic, is widely considered to be intellectually compelling and to have revolutionized thinking about the law.

In this book Steven Shavell provides an in-depth analysis and synthesis of the economic approach to the building blocks of our legal system, namely, property law, tort law, contract law, and criminal law. He also examines the litigation process as well as welfare economics and morality. Aimed at a broad audience, this book requires neither a legal background nor technical economics or mathematics to understand it. Because of its breadth, analytical clarity, and general accessibility, it is likely to serve as a definitive work in the economic analysis of law.

    Book Description

The revision of this best-selling text for a junior/senior course in Foundation Analysis and Design now includes an IBM computer disk containing 16 compiled programs together with the data sets used to produce the output sheets, as well as new material on sloping ground, pile and pile group analysis, and procedures for an improved anlysis of lateral piles. Bearing capacity analysis has been substantially revised for footings with horizontal as well as vertical loads. Footing design for overturning now incorporates the use of the same uniform linear pressure concept used in ascertaining the bearing capacity. Increased emphasis is placed on geotextiles for retaining walls and soil nailing.

    3 out of 5 stars Its Alright........2007-08-30

Its a very good source, and considered a bible by some, but is strictly in metric and also relies on software instead of thorough calculations at certain points. I dont have a hatred of metric, but I wasnt raised on trained in the system so it'll make you feel quite left out if youre not an SI guy/girl. As to the software comment, its very true and sometimes examples skip steps at which point the author jumps from A to D to M to Z with little or no explanation.

    2 out of 5 stars so-so.......2007-01-16

I regret this purchase. If you want to know how to do these calculations...do not buy this book. If you would like to blindly use a diskette to solve problems...well by all means purchase now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Working Reference.......2007-01-03

This book is an excellent working reference for any civil/geotechnical engineer. The example problems are very well written. The charts and graphs are easily read and very clearly printed. Excellent section on the design and analysis of segmental retaining walls. Beware of some other sites selling versions of this book printed overseas and sold here.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSICAL TEXTBOOK for GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS .......2006-03-01

I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydraulic structures.

We still use Bowles in our firm for designing many structures including retaining walls of different kinds, cellular cofferdams, buildings foundations, etc.

It includes many examples, easy to understand, and many charts and tables very useful for the designer.

    4 out of 5 stars A fundamental reference.......2003-07-09

If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.
