This collection of review lectures on topics in theoretical high energy physics has few rivals for clarity of exposition and depth of insight. Delivered over the past two decades at the International School of Subnuclear Physics in Erice, Sicily, the lectures help to organize and explain material that a the time existed in a confused state, scattered in the literature. At the time they were given they spread new ideas throughout the physics community and proved very popular as introductions to topics at the frontiers of research.

A wonderful book to supplement one's QFT knowledge.......2003-08-04
This 400-page book contains eight lectures of varying length (some are quite long). The first two are not very useful, but the remainder of the book is wonderful. It covers topics like scale invariance, Callan-Symanzik (RG) equations, renormalization theory (Hepp's theorem), spontaneously broken symmetries, classical and quantum solitons, instantons (in QM and in gauge theories), and 1/N expansion. These are all useful topics and must be understood by those in the field, and yet not all of them are covered by ordinary quantum field theory books like Peskin & Schroeder. The style is very friendly and readable and includes a lot of endnotes, appendices, and references. This book does not "read" like Peskin/Schroeder or Weinberg or Itzykson/Zuber; those books don't read. This one does. The equations are easy to follow and this book showcases the strength of Coleman's pedagogical style. In fact I can vouch that the tone and content of these lectures serves as a close substitue for Coleman's lectures themselves. The topics were all basically developed in the 1970s, and were themselves all quite hot research areas before supersymmetry and string theory revolutionized high-energy physics. However, the majority of this book is not an anachronism -- the renormalization group, spontaneously broken symmetries, solitons, instantons, and 1/N expansion all pervade modern physics.
A Classic.......2003-05-17
Coleman is one of the best field theorists and a great lecturer. His style in both research and lectures can be summarized as "turning obvious into trivial". Every topic is presented in the simplest possible way without loss of deep insights, which makes the book extremely comprehensible. The chapter on instantons is absolutely classic.
unconventional QFT book.......2000-04-13
Many physicists say that Coleman is one of the great field theoriest in time. This is the collection of what he had lectured. Each chapter has own its importance. The advantage of the book is that he avoided the mathematical complication to explain the real physics. It is very unique feature in the QFT books. So you can get the concept of field theory without mathematical jargon which most students hate.

An excellent introduction to the concept of symmetry.......2006-06-07
Symmetry is a fundamental characteristic of most living creatures, some natural features such as crystals, the basis of some mathematical models and a beautiful form of art. Most animals possess a form of bilateral symmetry, with only minor differences our right and left sides are mirror images of each other. Weyl gives examples of all of these types of symmetry, images with text explaining the details regarding the symmetry of the object.
At the end, he gives the mathematical explanations of the symmetries, how they can be combined into the construct known as a group. The symmetries can then be sequentially combined to perform multiple actions and generate other actions. This dual examination provides a great deal of insight into the idea of symmetry. Biologically, it is clear that there must be powerful evolutionary advantages to symmetry, as it is universal in the animal kingdom. Humans also have a natural affinity for symmetric objects, as symmetry is a universal theme in the art work of cultures with little or no contact between them.
Weyl has written an excellent introduction to the concept of symmetry. It is an idea that is easy to understand and the different motions of a symmetric object are a very good way to begin the study of group theory. Artists can also obtain some benefit from the additional knowledge of symmetry that they will get from this book.

Great Examination of Symmetry from a Mathematical Viewpoint.......2000-07-07
Be forewarned this book is technical and mathematical. Though you can definitely read it without going through all the math and thinking it through it won't be nearly as valuable to you as it would be if you spent some time and actually thought things out and figured them out rather than just speeding through. That being said this is probably the best examination of symmetry out there that I have read. Weyl starts from very simple concepts and eventually works his way up to examining even complex ornamental symmetry. Of course much of what he says about symmetry is true of aesthetics and beauty in general and many parallels can be drawn between what he is saying and other items like music that may not appear to have clear symmetry right off the bat. Unfortunately in the version I have the citations that Weyl makes are not clearly listed, but many of the authors are fairly prominent and easy to look up. If you like this book I might also reccomend G. D. Birkhoff's Aesthetic Measures. Where, Weyl is interested more in just symmetry Birkhoff is interested in mathematical aesthetic examination in general. Overall this book is a must read for anyone interested in aesthetics.
Ornamentation and its mathematical basis.......1998-07-22
This delightful booklet motivates the study of symmetry by showing its presence in art and nature. This is a work of love, frequently bordering poetry. Yet, it is a scientific book of high class. Hermann Weyl, one of the very great mathematicians of this century, then explains the mathematics behind symmetry, mostly group theory, and obtains all forms that, by repetition, completely fill the plane and the space (the crystallographic groups). This is wonderful reading. After it, the reader should be prepared for a beautiful recent discovery by R. Penrose, that there are aperiodical forms that completely fill the space, and, still more surprising, that Nature makes use of them. They are the quasi-crystals (not treated in Weyl's book, of course).

not a bad little book. actually i should say big book, as it is fairly large. the book is filled with many interesting photos and other visual examples of symmetry in nature, art, architecture, geometry, etc. interestingly two of the examples have been casualties of recent attacks, one a sculpture at the world trade center, and the other the beautiful spiral malwiya mosque in iraq.
beware that the math is very light to non-existent in the book, which may be good or bad depending on your perspective. it also contains a few innacuracies/ommisions. for instance it does not differntiate between logarithmic, golden, and fibonacci spirals.
golden spirals are logarithmic, but fibonacci spirals are not. the authors also perpetuate the myth that nautilus shells are golden spirals, when in fact they are only logarithmic.
i'd like to see a second edition with more math, and more accuracy as well as better layout and graphic design. the richness of the visual material deserves a better designer (authors, have your designer read edward tufte).
A beautiful book.......2004-03-30
This book is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the subject. It describes the various types of symmetries recognized by mathematics, and shows many examples of each of them, as used in design. It is not very mathematical, in fact, and if you're looking for a book more heavily oriented in that direction, you might be disappointed. But if you want to get a first introduction to symmetry, and treat your eyes to some wonderful illustrations, get this book!

Rich source of information.......2001-01-27
In 1944, Edith Muller claimed that all the 17 wallpaper groups were found in Alhambra. Unfortunately, her paper only contained 11 of them. Grunbaum and Shephard found two more, and finally in 1987 Perez-Gomez found the missing four.
The book includes pictures and discussions of all the 17 wallpaper groups. Unfortunately, it does not include pictures of the "missing" patterns from Alhambra. For that you have to go to J.M. Montesinos: Classical Tessellations and Three-Manifolds.
Book Description
Quantum Chemistry of Solids delivers a comprehensive account of the main features and possibilities of LCAO methods for the first principles calculations of electronic structure of periodic systems. The first part describes the basic theory underlying the LCAO methods applied to periodic systems and the use of wave-function-based (Hartree-Fock), density-based (DFT) and hybrid hamiltonians. The translation and site symmetry consideration is included to establish connection between k-space solid-state physics and real-space quantum chemistry methods in the framework of cyclic model of an infinite crystal. The inclusion of electron correlation effects for periodic systems is considered on the basis of localized crystalline orbitals. The possibilities of LCAO methods for chemical bonding analysis in periodic systems are discussed. The second part deals with the applications of LCAO methods for calculations of bulk crystal properties, including magnetic ordering and crystal structure optimization. The discussion of the results of some supercell calculations of point defects in non-metallic solids and of the crystalline surfaces electronic structure illustrates the efficiency of LCAO method for solids.

Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics, and many other engineering applications. This book describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics, and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials. It has been written at a level suitable for science and engineering students and can be used for teaching a one- or two-semester course. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. Whilst tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behaviour. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piezo-optics, magneto-optics and electro-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.

I found this book easy to read even my background in physics is not so solid. However, it would be best if the author can use one chapter to describe experimentally how the materials are classified into different crystal classes and how the physical properties are characterized.

It is a great pleasure to be the first person to write a review for the book by Professor Newnham, whom I know in person.
As a background for those who do not know Prof. Newnham...let me tell you that he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and the Ben Frankling Medal Laureate in Electrical Engineering, to name a few of his credentials. What is today known as "piezoelectric composites" is his brainchild, which had an immense impact on modern medical ultrasound and sonar technology.

The title of the book is truly a propos to what is covered therein. One cannot help but notice the perfect balance bewteen crystal physics and solid state chemistry throughtout the text. Prof. Newnham's prose is simple and clear, which makes the book very agreeable to read. All scientific explanations that are presented are "right on the money," to coin a phrase.
Older classical texts on crystal physics such as Nye, Banvanghataman, Juretschke, Mason, Voigt, Wooster etc., which are good books to read, do not go beyond providing a phenomenological description of crystal anisotropy using tensors and matrices. On the other hand, classical and widely popular books on crystal chemistry or Solid State Chemistry, such as Jaffe and West, are excessively descriptive and with barely any mathematical treatment of the phenomena of interest.
Prof. Newnham, on the other hand, establishes the necessary mathematical and crystallographic foundation in the first 6 chapters of his book with sufficient clarity and depth. He then proceeds to discuss a wide range of topics in the ensuing 26 chapters in a very systematic fashion.
In addition to the conventional topics in crystal physics, the book also includes chapters on Nonlinear Phenomena (nonlinear dielectric and elastic response, electrostriction, magnetostriction and electromagnetostriction), Ferroic Crystals, Acoustics, and Nonlinear Optics, which are usually not encountered in classical crystal physics or chemistry texts. Most importantly, every physical phenomena described in the book is masterfully linked to its chemical or structural origin, and structure-property relations are effectively conveyed to the reader. The discussion of principles and facts are supported with plenty of experimental data to compare and contrast the effects of structure on properties, which helps the reader to develop a "feel" for what is being discussed. Also, the illustrations are carefully chosen, an fully integrated into the discussion. Furthermore, Prof. Newnham also describes the basics of an array of experimental techniques used to determine various properties of crystals, which complements the discussion very well.
I believe the book is very accessible to even those who have a modest background in physics and chemistry as the subject is treated with a "from the ground up" approach. One merit of the book that should not go unmentioned here is its pedagogical value. And that, indeed, should not be a surprise to the reader since Prof. Newnham is well-known in the scientific community for his zeal to teaching. Hence, the title of this review: "A Classical Textbook from the Master..."
In closing, I am believe that Prof. Newnham's book will most likely become the "Lehrbuch" for the new generation of scientists and enginneers who fancy (or need) to learn applied crystal physics and chemistry. Well...Voldemar Voigt's "Lehrbuch der Kristalphysik" was long overdue for retirement anyway (with all due respect, of course)... :-) I highly recommend it.
PS: Did I mention that the price it right as well?

Emphasis here is on symmetries........2006-10-31
I was expecting something along the lines of an updated Lanczos (The Variational Principles of Mechanics). But the emphasis here is very much on relativistic symmetries. Actually the book reminds me somewhat of Penrose's _Road to Reality_ and -- perhaps a better comparison -- Longair's _Theoretical Concepts in Physics_, with a mix of popular and semi-popular exposition, historical background, and more detailed mathematical exposition, but with a focus on relativistic symmetry (which still allows for a pretty wide-ranging number of topics in physics).
One complaint: the paper, printing and artwork are rather poor for a $45 paperback. Oxford and Cambridge Press, for example, produce much higher quality paperbacks in this price range. I've knocked off a star for that.
A superb book.......2001-10-24
This is work is comprehensive, easy to follow, and well-formatted. It is an excellent introduction to the action principle. It also serves as a great primer for the mathematics of special relativity, 4-vectors, vector fields and tensors. It is a shame that it doesn't go very far into GR (from the least action perspective) though.
Very good introduction to Lagrangian mechanics........1998-06-19
I highly recommend this book to undergraduate and graduate students in physics and astrophysics. It's clearly written, with a very modern approach (and book design!).

This is an excellent book. It is an introduction to Lagrangian mechanics, starting with Newtonian physics and proceeding to topics such as relativistic Lagrangian fields and Lagrangians in General Relativity, electrodynamics, Gauge theory, and relativistic gravitation. The mathematical notation used is introduced and explained as the book progresses, so it can be understood by students at the undergraduate level in physics or applied mathmatics, yet it is rigorous enough to serve as an introduction to the mathematics and concepts required for courses in relativistic quantum field theory and general relativity.

The definitive book on Escher's repeating pattern work........1999-08-28
As a child, Maurits Cornelis Escher fitted together irregular pieces of cheese in his sandwiches so that they would completely fill the space between the slices of bread. From the very beginnings of his career as an artist, in 1921, he devised ways of interlocking images so as to leave no empty space, and then of making these images repeat infinitely in increasingly complex ways. Professor Schattschneider's magnificently illustrated volume analyses this critical aspect of Escher's work, focussing on a series of 137 symmetry drawings and watercolors created from 1926 to 1971, which the artist kept in five folders throughout his lifetime and which he used as references for his continuing work on the regular division of the plane. Included are analogies from each of these works (which now sell for tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars each) to his original prints and projects. As owner of and dealer in the main body of Escher's original prints, drawings and watercolors, which were previously on loan to the Hague Museum, I make extensive use of this book and commend it to all. Some of the text is written for the layman; other portions of the writing are technical and will be of interest to mathematicians and crystallographers. In addition, the quantity and quality of the full-page color illustrations, few of which are to be found in any other publication in print, contribute to making this book, which serves as a catalogue raisonné of the symmetry drawings and watercolors, eminently collectable.

This book answered a lot of questions I had about Escher's regular division of the plane. It has highly enlarged my understanding of his work, and thus made me enjoy it even more. My initial interest was deepening my mathematical knowledge on tessallations, and I can tell I did.

This book has beautiful full color reproductions of Escher's notebooks, along with erxplainations and diagrams showing how Escher accomplished such a volume of work. It also includes anecdotes told by his friends, and reproductions of all three of the metamorphosis. Truly Brilliant! You can't go wrong with this book, be you mathemetitian, or artist
A good look at Escher's tessellation research........1999-02-16
Doris Schattschneider's book takes a look at Escher's research on the regular division of the plane.
1/8 on an iceberg is visible while 7/8 is hidden. Escher's prints are like this. The visible image is only a small part of the thought and preparation that lies beneath the surface. Schattschneider takes us beneath the surface and shines a light on this hidden behemoth.
This volume is more demanding and difficult than other Escher books. But it is rewarding to delve into.
Meticulous, tenacious, thorough, playful. My adjectives for Escher are driven home even more forcefully by this book.
Ms Schattschneider did a fine job putting this book together.

The ten participants in this volume explore nonrepresentational patterns from perceptual and cultural perspectives. Archaeologists, anthropologists, art historians, and psychologists lend their views on how patterns and symmetry are expressed and resonate in a variety of human relationships and institutions. The authors reveal how symmetric relationships in human visual, verbal, and kinesthetic manifestations are integral to cultural identity.
Diane Humphrey uses developmental studies of children and adults to explore how humans learn to recognize and reproduce symmetry. Michael Kubovny and Lars Strother focus on mathematically- and perceptually-based understandings of symmetry while Thomas Wynn uses the production of symmetrical tools as a basis for analysis. Dorothy Washburn attempts to understand why symmetrical representations take the forms they do, and she develops an evolutionary model of the development of representational formats. Anne Paul seeks to understand the logic behind color and structure of Paracas textiles, and Ed Franquemont examines conceptual expression in Andean weaving. Peter Roe presents evidence that the Amerindian world view can be found in design organization on ceramic vessels while F. Allan Hanson and Rod Ewins investigate the symmetries of art in Maori and Fijian cultures. Ultimately, this volume hopes to engage multidisciplinary approaches to the study of pattern and symmetry and how they influence human cultural formation and identity.
