The accompanying website lets you view all the images from the atlas with a "virtual microscope", allowing you to view the image at a variety of pre-set magnifications.
Customer Reviews:
Wheater's Histology.......2007-01-21
Basic histology isn't the most thrilling of topics, but this book makes it a little less painful. Excellent quality images and easy-to-digest commentary make this text a good supplement to any histology or physiology course.
excellent atlas.......2006-11-10
If you're taking a histo course, this is a fabulous atlas. Everyone at my school buys it, it has clearly labelled photographs of slides as well as very neat diagrams explaining how certain things work. Includes electron micrographs of cells for which EM's are helpful. Very very good book, I highly recommend it, it helps alot.
A text and an atlas...good at neither.......2003-10-24
This text tries to be both a text and an atlas in one and is unfortunately good at neither one. The text is very very basic and lacking in detail. The sections are poorly stained, out of focus and do not clearly demonstrate the structures. The pictures are small and of poor quality. Considering the price, I would recommend spending the extra 30-40 bucks and buy Gartner and Hiatt for an atlas and Junquera for a text instead of paying for this text.
!!!!.......2003-09-29
This book is good but not for beginers or medical students. it's complicated and packed with information, that might not be so important for students.
doesn't have any clinical correlations. i'd suggest the Basic histology book:text and atlas, rather than this one
Very useful for my histology class.......2003-06-12
I am a medical student and found this textbook very helpful because it was well-organized and full of important information. It's very thorough and complete with great pictures. Also, this book will always serve as a great reference in years to come. My study group and I also used the following which is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (isbn: 0971999686) The questions in the second book were of similar type to the tests in our medical histology class. In fact, we were recommended the second book from our friends at another med school and they found it quite helpful. It goes to show they were right, we all got A's and B's by using these two books.

Book Description
This atlas of functional ultrastructure provides not only a detailed insight into the complex structure and organization of cells and tissues but also into specific functions fulfilled by the various cellular organelles and the dynamics of the different processes inside cells. The large collection of electron micrographs, together with those from immunoelectron microscopy, is complemented by thorough explanatory texts and schemes. Emphasis was placed on an integrated view of structure and function to show that subcellular organelles provide the structural foundation for fundamental processes of living organisms. Specialized cell types form the various tissues, and principles of tissue organization are presented. Under various conditions of disease, characteristic structural alterations may occur which are illustrated with examples thus providing a valuable source of information for scientists and students of Medicine and Biological Sciences, particularly of Histology, Cell and Molecular Biology.
Book Description
This atlas’s distinctive, full-color, schematic illustrations have earned lasting renown for superb explanation of basic histology concepts. This edition includes 120 newly improved illustrations; an additional nine micrographs; and a new chapter on cell biology. The atlas presents its hallmark magnification of the minutia of organ and tissue structures to show the functions of microscopic structures and how functions work. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their systems; Part Two addresses organs in a similar way.
A brand-new electronic supplement now allows students to practice identifying structures in micrographs using a "labels on/labels off" toggle, "hotspots" (a mark on an image indicating the presence of a hidden label, ideal for self testing), and a self-test for productive learning. An instructor's version of the image bank is also available, which includes an additional 600 images not found in the book.

Atlas of Histology with Functional correlations.......2007-09-29
The book is an excellent source of information and my friends and I loved using it with our class projects.
Pros and Cons..........2006-07-30
I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this. There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.
Other people in my medical school class used the wheater book, gartner, or strete and seemed happy. There were a few instances where I would have preferred to see a photograph instead of a drawing, but overall I was very happy with this book and would use it again. This book was particularly helpful in the "lab" portion of histology when identifying cells and tissue structures on slides.
Excellent book to start your medical career.......2006-04-26
I'm a 2nd year medical student as of April 2006.
This book helped me a lot to put the whole picture togather. I even refer back to this book when reviewing for pathology.
The book title says it all...Histology pictures with functional correlations. All the body organ system presented with very good slide view pictures, which are all labeled + text explaining the labels and functional aspects of all the labels. This book helped me connect all the body organs.
I highly recommend this book for basic science histology class. Start your medical career right w/ choosing the right books and this is one of them.
HELPFUL.......2006-03-22
This text was helpful in learning the histology of each section. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wanted some extra help.
Mediocre.......2006-03-16
Hello, Im a Med student and became a Histology lover during my course. I own several Histo books and I have to say that I have read them all. So I have used this Atlas to "supplement" my Ross and my Wheater's and my 2-3 others, just for fun.
Regarding to this Atlas, and this is JUST an Atlas, I have to say that in my humble opinion it doesn't worth the buy if you intend to reach a somewhat decent level in this course. I dont want to discourage anyone from buying it, after all I have also bought it, but not everyone is willing to spend money on UNNEEDED books. I have seen a lot of people using it, and may be it did saved some "lives" but there are lots of better Histo books out there guys. The picture quality is moderate, the text is too much simplified (and I am not a native English speaker!)If you want a concise book my pick would be Wheater's, and if you want a thorough one, I would choose the Ross. For an Atlas I would go for the "Color Atlas of Histology" by Gartner. And generally speaking, if you go JUST for Ross, you will not need any other book.
I give this book a generous mark of three stars and add one if I heart someones feelings and hope that it was helpfull.

Customer Reviews:
Lacking in many ways.......2007-02-27
Poor graphics, very little information with regard to the "functional" piece, and the CD is just a collection of images from the book. I would recommend looking elsewhere (e.g., Blumenfeld's "Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases").
CD missing.......2007-01-18
The timing was perfect, they are very prompt sending the book to me as I needed it for my teaching.
However, the CD was missing, it suppose to be inside the book cover.
Thank you for your help and please keep up the good work you are doing
Have a wonderful day

Customer Reviews:
Concise and perfect for Med Students.......2007-09-06
I'm doing neuroscience research before applying to medical school. The suite of Nolte's "The Human Brain" books are part of a course i'm currently taking here that's Med School level Basic human neuroanatomy. The study guide is a perfect complement to the textbook and photographs books.
Amazing ook.......2007-07-27
This is an amazing book, It's easy to read, good graphics, It's everything you need for completely understand of the human brain anatomy.
Anatomy oriented.......2006-11-10
It is a very good book. It is concise in its explanations and the details are enough for someone who needs an anatomical view of the brain as opposed to a cellular or molecular approach. The pictures are fantastic. I use them for clarification all the time.
Very readable.......2005-05-13
I found this book to be quite readable for a textbook. The chapter on vasculature of the brain was invaluable when it came to providing a background for a professor's unreadable and textually-sparse lecture notes. It isn't as dense as Moore and Dailey's Clinically Oriented Anatomy is with details or specifics of anatomy, but it's still reasonably complete while remaining readable. (Of course, I'm just comparing style, not content, as Moore and Dailey don't really cover the brain in any detail in that text, so are basically useless for neuroanatomy.) I don't usually read textbooks when lecture notes are available, but this text was an exception. With the neurology block coming at the end of my first year of medical school, I needed a change in study methods to keep my brain from exploding and found that this worked. The electron micrographs in it are great, as well. At least with the histology photos, I kept getting distracted from the text to look at the pictures and read the captions -- it's always nice when you get distracted from studying by your studies.
Great Intro.......2004-01-01
This is an awesome textbook if you are interested in studying the human brain. It is a good introductory book.

Functional Anatomy.......2007-09-03
The first 16 pages of this book which was listed as new were shortened at the top by an inch or so and were bound together. I had to pull them apart. I would have returned the book if I hadn't of needed it so soon.
