Book Description

Many people obstruct their innate potential through repeated patterns of emotional struggle and suffering. This practical, hands-on guide explains why and how people habitually fall into this trap and provides a program, easily incorporated into everyday life, that frees them from this destructive behavior. Using a simple mandala, the book illustrates the four places humans go when they feel threatened, uncomfortable, or aren’t fully centered or grounded in the present moment. Like a trail of pebbles left behind on a hike, it helps trace the path back to the authentic self. Drawing on his three decades of teaching consciousness, Richard Moss plays the role of wise shepherd, accompanying and encouraging the reader on a journey toward the genius within and away from fear and other limitations. Most importantly, he offers an always-available compass that directs readers back to the true self, and into the magic of the present moment.

5 out of 5 stars Are you awake?.......2007-10-09

Dr. Moss brings awareness to all of us. In these chaotic times, I respect him greatly for speaking to the "fear factor" that has been created in our culture. He gives structure to consciously choose to become more "awake" in our own life. If we want a better world, we can not live in fear. I challenge readers to become informed.

5 out of 5 stars Conscious living and innertransformation.......2007-09-12

If you are interested in living more completely in the now then this book is for you. Richard Moss,MD shows us why and how we habitually obstruct our innate potential for what Richard calls radical aliveness as said by Deepak Chopra.

If you want to take a close look at yourself then this book is for you. How simple and direct Dr. Moss is.

5 out of 5 stars The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness.......2007-07-19

Spend just a single day being completely aware of where your thoughts lead you. How often does your mind wander? How much time do you find yourself recalling or analyzing things that happened in your past? How much time do you spend worrying about what might happen in the future? What stories do you make up about yourself in your wanderings? Are you self-sacrificing, underappreciated, and undervalued? Are you hardworking and eagerly climbing the ladder of success? Are you bitter that everyone else seems to catch a break but you get nothing?

Anyone who has ever tried this exercise knows that the majority of our time is spent anywhere but at the present moment. We fixate on the past, we fantasize about the future, we create self serving stories in our minds, and we judge others. Very little of our time is actually fully focused on what we are doing and feeling in this exact moment. So in essense, we rarely focus on the here and now, on the moment.

The Mandala of Being guides the reader to a better understanding of this very human process explaining that these seemingly harmless distractions actually color the way we see ourselves. Basically, all of these stories do two things. They either feed our ego so that we feel that we are somebody special (hiding the underlying feeling that we are not enough as we are) or we opening berate ourselves. The end result in both cases is the same, it reinforces the notion that somehow we have to be, act, or have something specific in order to be valuable human beings.

The simple solution is to have our thoughts stay in the here and now, to see events for what they really are, and to get in touch with our true selves. This may be easy to say but it is extremely hard to do. The Mandala of Being teaches us how to make a start in this attempt and how to counteract some of the major obstacles on this path.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recomended.......2007-07-17

I have given away 5 copies and just ordered more. Regardless of one's spiritual path this book provides the basic tools to confidently proceed on. I continue to reread this book and get more out of it each time.

5 out of 5 stars landmark work!.......2007-07-01

So glad to see that all of the reviews here, so far, are positive. I own the book as well and can't recommend it enough to anyone who is serious about being on a spiritual path.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-09-05

I've never found these type of books all that useful (certainly not something you read cover to cover), but this one does have great organization and an emphasis on the project management aspect (not just some techie jibber jabber which is out of date in a year).

I use it mostly to help me clarify with sr. management why our BI department is doing what it's doing, expected benefits and risks. It helps explain why it is important to do all the ground work. Even if we aren't given time and resources to do it, it helps me keep my eye on the ball, not lose sight of objectives, and work in good best practices whenever possible.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is entrenched in BI projects on a regular basis.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book - for beginners..........2007-07-18

The author has well organized the contents, and provided a clear explanation of each of the topics (each topic is a step/phase in the overall BI implementation methodology).... Has a project plan template also...
Good book for beginners in Data warehousing / BI.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a PM.......2007-05-11

Am currently in the process of executing a DW/BI project, my background is JAVA application Project management. This book has been great in getting me upto speed on the basic architecture and lingo of BI/DW.

Book lays out step by step the different parts to a DW. The front office, the back office, meta data repository. Highlights how DW/BI phases are different from other application dev phases. It doesn't go into how to do data modelling - for this get the lifecycle toolkit. But it gives a great overview of planning a BI/DW initiative. Much better than the pure Project Management books.
To get a complete picture I'd use this book along with the Toolkit book.

4 out of 5 stars Good organized document.......2007-01-11

I like this book, its easy to read it...

Good document

4 out of 5 stars Good Practical advice.......2007-01-09

The book offers good practical advice that can be used in the development of a Business Intelligence (BI) project / initiative. The over all road map provides a check list of issues to consider and offers a place to start in planning your own initiative. It is a good reference for individuals starting a BI project for the first time.

2 out of 5 stars Succeeded in turning a great theme into a boring book of clichés........2007-08-18

Rarely have I been so disappointed when receiving a book. 'Nouveau riche' is a great understatement. The author needs some serious help in modesty, taste and self-restraint... a 101 course on imagination and creativity wouldn't hurt either. She has succeeded in turning a great theme into a boring book of clichés.
I really wish I could get my money back... what a waste!

2 out of 5 stars Did not like it.......2007-06-28

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!.......2007-02-25

As a person who changes my family room decor seasonally, I really appreciate the "winter" theme ideas in this book. It is a great match for my tastes, and the cover looks perfect on my coffee table!

5 out of 5 stars a personal favorite.......2007-02-20

I bought one, read it in our "winter house" and loved it so much I bought a second copy to read during the rest of the year when we're at the seashore. The photographs, the text, the "feel" of the book are all inspiring and I return to it again and again.

Book Description

Cynthia Moss has studied the elephants in Kenya's Amboseli National Park for over twenty-seven years. Her long-term research has revealed much of what we now know about these complex and intelligent animals. Here she chronicles the lives of the members of the T families led by matriarchs Teresia, Slit Ear, Torn Ear, Tania, and Tuskless. With a new afterword catching up on the families and covering current conservation issues, Moss's story will continue to fascinate animal lovers.

"One is soon swept away by this 'Babar' for adults. By the end, one even begins to feel an aversion for people. One wants to curse human civilization and cry out, 'Now God stand up for the elephants!'"—Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, New York Times

"Moss speaks to the general reader, with charm as well as scientific authority. . . . [An] elegantly written and ingeniously structured account." —Raymond Sokolov, Wall Street Journal

"Moss tells the story in a style so conversational . . . that I felt like a privileged visitor riding beside her in her rickety Land-Rover as she showed me around the park." —Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, New York Times Book Review

"A prose-poem celebrating a species from which we could learn some moral as well as zoological lessons." —Chicago Tribune

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Captivating Elephant Saga.......2006-12-21

Moss takes you on an incredible journey into the lives of African elephants and allows you to take a bird's eye view of the research she has done. The book, while captivating, can seem a little discombobulated to some, however. The book divides itself into the different years Moss is writing about, each chapter being a different year. This set up, however, is a bit confusing as the chapters do not limit themselves to that particular year, but instead discussed a myriad of years all while focusing on a particular topic. That said, you do see progression in the timeline as the book reads on.

The only downside I saw to this book was the fictional retelling of circumstances that she was not witness to. She describes the deaths of a few elephants as well as some mishaps involving the elephants in near poetic detail, though she never actually saw what happened, or she only witnessed the very end of the circumstance. She does not note where the fictionalization begins, and you only understand what parts are ficionalized after reading on and seeing where she says "I don't know what happened." These are merely assumptions made on the part of the author and though they could have very real merit, it can hurt the integrity of the book when read by someone who is looking for a purely factual account of African elephants. While Moss does warn that she does make assumptions, it would have been better if she noted right before each fictionalized story that it was an assumption. That said, the stories do involve true elephant behavior and shows the audience how elephants may react in certain situations.

There is an incredible amount of insight in this book. You become attached to certain elephants, feel joy over new births, celebrate victory over hardship, and mourn the deaths of these creatures. It teaches the reader about their behaviors, environment, and most of all, the conservation of these majestic animals.

5 out of 5 stars HOW WONDERFUL ELEPHANTS ARE.......2006-07-05

IT IS AMAZING TO ME THAT MAN DOESNT KNOW OR CHOOSES NOT TO ACKNOWLEDGE HOW INTELLEGENT AND WONDERFUL THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES OF GOD ARE AND THIS BOOK MAKES IT REAL CLEAR.

5 out of 5 stars The lives of elephants revealed.......2002-01-18

This is a wonderful book. Cynthia Moss takes the reader deep into the intricate social lives of Africa elephans in Amboseli National Park (Kenya), and leaves a profound impression. How very sensitive these animals are, and how endearing. It is entirely clear how these creatures have suffered at the hands of humans, but also nobody can read this book and not feel the urge to conserve this fantastic species. Also it may inspire some to travel to Amboseli to see the elephants 'in person' - an experience that you will never forget!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2002-01-05

This is an excellent book. At first, the book seems confusing as the author continuously refers to the individual elephants on a first name basis when one has no idea of who these "people" are. As the names become more familiar and the individual stories develop, the strange names develop into a wonderful, although at times anthropomorphic story on the natural history of these gentle animals. As she warns us, the author takes the liberty of adding unwitnessed, fictional pieces to most stories, which can be confusing and at times blur the objective observations that she makes with subjective, although probably real, assumptions.
But this book is not a hard core technical text, despite glimpses of it being so in the beginning. The book is about remembering the wonderful social and behavioral characteristics of individuals that make up a population. From matriarchs to lonely males, from birth to death during periods of drought or at the hands of Masai warriors, this book gives a comprehensive insight into relevant issues affecting the survival of the African elephant. The author comes across as a human being, with emotions that go beyond the hard-core science. Although her prose is dry at times, this book is very enjoyable and opens a magnificent window into the world of the Amboseli elephants.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and moving study of elephants!.......2001-01-11

This book covers thirteen years of Cynthia Moss' research on elephants at Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Several of the elephant families residing at Amboseli are featured in this book. Cynthia Moss learned to distinguish each individual elephant by such characteristics as the shape of their ears, ear markings or the size and shape of the tusks. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of elephant life like mating, draught etc. Together with fellow researcher Joyce Poole Cynthia Moss discovered that the bulls like their Asian cousins go into musth too (the period they are the most attractive to the cows). Thus a longstanding mystery was solved. But through it all shines Cynthia Moss' deep love for the elephants, she found with them so much to recommend. Learning from them. She certainly succeeds in sharing the joy of studying and living with elephants. I warmly recommend Ian and Oria Douglas-Hamilton and Joyce Poole's books too. Indeed Cynthia Moss has found new insights but this is still the book to read on elephants in the first place.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stunning Patterns but little raving about gauge..........2007-07-06

I love the designs in this book. They're highly individualized and stylish. The author has taken pains to attend to detail and I'm impressed with the results. The photography is lovely, directions are clear, and the models (especially the red head) are beautiful. This is an "eye candy" book of inspiration. The sizing ranges from 32 bust to 40, in most cases, and as is usually the case, there is nothing to accommodate a larger woman. That's too bad, too, because most of the women I know who have the style and confidence to wear these types of designer sweaters are older and larger women.

My only real "beef" with this book is that the gauge is always calculated over the pattern stitch and in several cases is calculated over a blocked pattern swatch. Huh...how tightly should I block the swatch? Should I pin out all the points or just the corners? Will I be able to block the finished garment to the same actual tension as I have the swatch? Should I steam my blocked swatch? Should I block when I'm in a stressed or relaxed mood? How will the blocking affect the stockinette portions of the garment? How exactly do you count stitches in a cabled or lace pattern when the stitch counts don't remain the same every row? Do I really want to spend so much time doing a patterned swatch and then having so much difficulty counting the stitches? Do you see my dilemma?

If an author is going to go to the time and expense to knit a prototype, doesn't it make sense to go right ahead and calculate the gauge over stockinette stitch or garter stitch with the same yarn, the same needles and the same knitter, so that readers can make yarn substitutions easily and use the pattern over and over for different sizes? I'm running into this same issue more and more often and I've learned to look at the dimensions given in the diagrams and calculate my own gauge with my own yarn from that. Funny, my old books and my mother's old Workbaskets always measure gauge over a simple stitch like stockinette or garter stitch. With all the designer yarns out there that come and go so quickly you would think a designer could make it easy to obtain an accurate gauge with a minimum amount of trouble by just taking one more small step.

I suppose that with the word "couture" in the title I should have expected this. Never mind, it's gorgeous book anyway and I don't feel that I've wasted my money. I'll start with the first sweater using the Old Shale pattern, since I've knit that one for years, and work my way through. Despite my ravings about gauge, I'm quite excited about these projects and I'm looking forward to the results.

5 out of 5 stars Knitting collections will find it fun........2007-06-18

Hand knitters will appreciate the tips and shortcuts in FINISHING TECHNIQUES FOR HAND KNITTERS, which introduces the basics of reading patterns and instructions and explores different methods of casting on and binding off, shaping and sizing. Seams for different projects, buttonholes and necklines, and tips on adding decorative embellishments such as beads makes for a colorful presentation pairing color photos of both finished projects and their step-by-step construction. Knitting collections will find it fun.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-04-01

I've always loved this designers work....but this time out she fell short of my expectations.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-03-28

There are a few designs I may consider knitting, but if I had looked at this book in a book-store it would not have been purchased. I don't think there is one item that jumps out and says "Knit Me!" Perhaps the test knitters and stylists let Ms Moss down with the projects in this book. Some of the sweaters appear to have been knit with very poor regard to tension and there is one sweater (Rosie) that shows the wide neckline pulled down over the shoulders. The back view reveals sloppy seaming and cables pulled out of whack. One of the sleeves looks as if it has been caught on a stray branch and has a stitch pulled. Not a lot of attention to detail here.

On the plus side, there is a fairly comprehensive Techniques section and the Project Index has a thumbnail for each sweater. The index also makes mention that this book is a retrospective and that some of the patterns have

been previously published under different names.

4 out of 5 stars classic, but not innovative.......2007-03-24

Jean Moss is known for her classic designs and this volume continues that tradition. That said, I admit to some disapointment with this collection. To me, the term "couture" implies excellence in design, technique, and detail as well as unique, individual and "up-to-the-minute" styling. Many of the designs in this collection appeared somewhat dated, and neither technique nor detailing were particularly challenging to the intermediate or advanced knitter. I also would have liked a little more attention to fit in some of the patterns. Several of the patterns would have been vastly improved with a little more attention to waistline taper, shoulder fitting etc. As usual, text did include some nice instructional hints.

    Book Description

At this school, there are some children who push and tease and bully. Sometimes they hurt other kids by just ignoring them. The girl in this story sees it happening, but she would never do these mean things herself. Then one day something happens that shows her that being a silent bystander isn't enough. Will she take some steps on her own to help another kid?

Bright, fluid, realistic watercolors illustrate the story, set in a school with lots of diversity. Resources at the end of the book will help parents and children talk about teasing and bullying and find ways to stop it at school. One child at a time can help change a school.

    5 out of 5 stars A powerful story.......2007-09-29

As a retired classroom teacher, I have read many books to classes over the years. This book stands out as one of the best, both for it's message, it's illustrations, and writing style. I now use the book in the anti-viollence program that I teach in schools.

The story sends a powerful message to children (and adults) about taking action to change injustices that we see. There are times when we notice things that are unfair or mean, but we believe that we are doing enough to feel sorry for those who are the brunt of such unkindnesses. The story clearly demonstrates the importance of moving beyond feeling sympathy to feeling empathy. We must speak up for others and do something that makes a difference.

The ending provides the students with provocative food for thought to initiate a reflective discussion. This book is suitable for 2nd through 6th graders, and even beyond!

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-03-11

Say Something portrays an enormous message with a minimum number of words. As I read it to my class of 3rd graders, their response was immediate and powerful. They identified with the characters on many levels, and for the first few pages, thought that being a silent, "innocent" bystander WAS the right thing to do. As the story went on, their faces and comments demonstrated that they had reached the realization that they had the power to help. Months later, they still talk about the concepts introduced to them in the story. When we discuss problems at Class Meeting, it's not unusual to hear, "We have to look out for each other. Nobody wants to be a bystander!"

    5 out of 5 stars Empathy.......2007-03-09

Say Something is an essential book for children in elementary school. The book is short and simple but is made powerful by the way it reflects the experiences of the readers/listeners.

The children I read to are ages 5, 3, and 1. I asked them to look at the illustrations and identify the people the book is referencing. They can easily tell which child is sad, alone, or angry. We could easily identify the emotions being illustrated and therefore we were able to better empathize with the characters in the book. Empathizing with the characters helps teach a lesson in doing the same with others in our day to day life.

This book not only teaches empathy, but also demonstrates a beautiful solution that works with many problems.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reminder to all of us to Say SOMETHING!.......2006-03-04

Peggy Moss has written a powerful book which still brings tears to my eyes when I read it aloud. This book reminds us that we have the power to say something about what is going on around us. Thank you Peggy!

5 out of 5 stars if not now, when?.......2005-07-01

Rebeccasreads highly recommends SAY SOMETHING as an important picture book with something to say!

It's one thing to notice how your schoolmates get along, which ones are always alone, & who is always teased. It's quite another thing to be on the receiving end. So what do you do? Do you do anything?

SAY SOMETHING urges you, in scene after scene, to become aware, to test your courage, to step forward & do unto others as you would have them do unto you, especially when teasers & taunters are looking for a bit of put-down fun.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for design fanatics.......2007-06-26

Studying Charlotte Moss' technique is a must for those who are designers and also for those who are developing their own design style. It is foreseeable that not everyone would covet EVERY Moss design, but it is admirable how her philosophy seems to center on a way of living, and showcasing your life, rather than merely decorating.

In her first book, A Passion For Detail, the theme is obviously denoted by the title. The book provides a great introduction and insight into Moss' technique and design style - heavy on the accessories and patterns (some might call it cluttered), but the decor is nonetheless tasteful and very calculated. Moss aims to surround herself, and those for whom she designs, with the things they love. Even if this technique amounts to a lot of "things."

The book is thematic and conveniently divided into five sections, but at times, the chapters themselves are a bit disjointed and the chapter themes, while vaguely associated with the pictures, do not seem very cohesive as the pictures jump around from house to house.

If you are looking for a how-to decorate book, this is not the book for you. Chapter Five briefly touches on Moss' technique, but it is more a study the pictures and learn type of book. You could reproduce the design strategy, but most of Moss' accessories are a bit out of the average price range and the style of decor is a bit impractical for most of us. But, even if you are scared by Moss' designs, this is still an important read for design fanatics, as you can still learn from her technique. The most prevalent lesson from the book is this: design is about style and taste, but it is also about surrounding yourself with the things you love.

5 out of 5 stars Interpreting English Country American-style.......2002-02-19

Ever heard the phrase "it's all in the details?" Ever wonder just how homes that grace the pages of the best shelter magazines ever get chosen in the first place? What's right, what's wrong, how can I get my home to put on its best face? What style is really me? Former Wall-Streeter Charlotte Moss, now a well published interior decorator, builds a great argument for discovering then developing a personal interior vision. Her stylishly decorated images ooze of self-confidence and clarity of thought. Well chosen fabrics and accessories, complete with understanding and ideas behind their choices reveal insight and a good sense of humor too. Moss notes that everyone has a passion for something, and that these passions are forms of self-expression. Comfort, style, values and personality are telling signals of the quality of lives we lead. In our daily frenzied routines, Moss advocates looking at your own home from a different perspective. The book's mission promises that a more relaxed and confident home will emerge. Mission accomplished!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Coffee Table Book.......1997-08-07

I have read Charlotte's book, "Creating A Room", and prefer it while re-decorating. "A Passion for Detail" is a "look book" and sometimes a little too precious for the average household. But it is nice escapism
