Book Description
From THE ENEMY AT HOME:
“In this book I make a claim that will seem startling at the outset. The cultural left in this country is responsible for causing 9/11. … In faulting the cultural left, I am not making the absurd accusation that this group blew up the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I am saying that the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the nonprofit sector, and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world. The Muslims who carried out the 9/11 attacks were the product of this visceral rage—some of it based on legitimate concerns, some of it based on wrongful prejudice, but all of it fueled and encouraged by the cultural left. Thus without the cultural left, 9/11 would not have happened.
“I realize that this is a strong charge, one that no one has made before. But it is a neglected aspect of the 9/11 debate, and it is critical to understanding the current controversy over the ‘war against terrorism.’ … I intend to show that the left has actively fostered the intense hatred of America that has led to numerous attacks such as 9/11. If I am right, then no war against terrorism can be effectively fought using the left-wing premises that are now accepted doctrine among mainstream liberals and Democrats.”
Whenever Muslims charge that the war on terror is really a war against Islam, Americans hasten to assure them they are wrong. Yet as Dinesh D’Souza argues in this powerful and timely polemic, there really is a war against Islam. Only this war is not being waged by Christian conservatives bent on a moral crusade to impose democracy abroad but by the American cultural left, which for years has been vigorously exporting its domestic war against religion and traditional morality to the rest of the world.
D’Souza contends that the cultural left is responsible for 9/11 in two ways: by fostering a decadent and depraved American culture that angers and repulses other societies—especially traditional and religious ones— and by promoting, at home and abroad, an anti-American attitude that blames America for all the problems of the world.
Islamic anti-Americanism is not merely a reaction to U.S. foreign policy but is also rooted in a revulsion against what Muslims perceive to be the atheism and moral depravity of American popular culture. Muslims and other traditional people around the world allege that secular American values are being imposed on their societies and that these values undermine religious belief, weaken the traditional family, and corrupt the innocence of children. But it is not “America” that is doing this to them, it is the American cultural left. What traditional societies consider repulsive and immoral, the cultural left considers progressive and liberating.
Taking issue with those on the right who speak of a “clash of civilizations,” D’Souza argues that the war on terror is really a war for the hearts and minds of traditional Muslims—and traditional peoples everywhere. The only way to win the struggle with radical Islam is to convince traditional Muslims that America is on their side.
We are accustomed to thinking of the war on terror and the culture war as two distinct and separate struggles. D’Souza shows that they are really one and the same. Conservatives must recognize that the left is now allied with the Islamic radicals in a combined effort to defeat Bush’s war on terror. A whole new strategy is therefore needed to fight both wars. “In order to defeat the Islamic radicals abroad,” D’Souza writes, “we must defeat the enemy at home.”

It's justifiable homicide, of course.......2007-08-27
D'Souza's logic and syntax are impeccable, as always.
If I annoy Dinesh - Liberal that I am - or if I cause Dinesh to view me as a sinner, it is therefore my fault if Dinesh decides to blow up my house or even some other house that looks like it in my neighborhood.
Dinesh makes an persuasive argument in defense of Al Q'aida and grumpy old terrorists everywhere.
I recommend that all true Americans read his book and edumacate themselves immediately.
good questions.......2007-08-24
I don't know if the American left really are so unpatriotic that they are allying themselves with the terriorists. However, it is a good questions to asked.
I agree with the author in the analysis of the imposing American ideals onto other countries. But I believed it goes both ways. It is arrogance for the Conservatives to impose the American Ideal of Democracy onto the unwilling participants. It is also very arrogant of the sophisticated Hollywood crowd to impose their ideals of the freedom of choice and feminism onto the unwilling participants. It is ethnocentric view on both sides. There will always be someone that wants to break out of the mode in all the developing countries. That does not mean the mass majority are willing to give up their way of life as they know it.
Author stressed that most traditional societies does not agree with the liberal view of the world. The liberal view works for the west, it doesn't necessary work for the rest. If the conservatives are guilty of imposing views on others, the Liberals are equally, if not more forcefully impose their liberal values onto the rest of the world that do not want them, via internet, media, entertainments. Conservative use military force, liberal uses softer but more pervasive method in infiltrating the rest of the world by....."Americanization" Combined with the unwanted morals of the liberal, and the military force, this make us the prime target for any counntries that have any grievence against the US.
Provocative but thought provoking.......2007-08-24
Dinesh D'Souza has written a powerful and provocative book, containing a unique perspective difficult to attain other than by an author straddling his traditional culture of origin and the newly adopted progressive culture of his current environment. While many readers will be offended by the book's central thesis of the left's putative contribution to the moral decay of American society, the book has much to offer in terms of understanding strengths of the Islamic family structure alien to Western ethnocentric analysis. Despite some minor factual errors regarding the Spanish Inquisition and the role of Islam in science, the data in the book are in the main sound. Its up to the reader to react to the analysis. Sean Penn might look elsewhere.
Well Worth Your Reading Time.......2007-08-13
I approached this book with much skepticism; by the time I was mid-way through the book, I was much intrigued with the author's thesis. Toward the end, however, I was of the mind that the author's deductions and conclusions were too much of a stretch.
I believe the D'souza correctly diagnosed several key points, which escape many mainstream thinkers:
1. The driving passion behind the masterminds of 911 was not religious, but cultural.
2. Most Americans, at all levels, tend to be rather ignorant about other cultures and simplistically believe that what we think is good should naturally be welcomed by other cultures. In reality, as many scholars have pointed out, democratic institutions must be home grown for them to take hold. People in foreign lands perceive America through the lens of American pop culture, which has become very coarse and depraved. We also "export" ideas such as strident feminist, abortion and homosexual agendas which, even in our own society are controversial, are viewed with suspicion and contempt in other traditional societies.
3. The key to winning this war is winning the hearts of traditional Muslims. Traditional Muslims have more in common with conservatives than many think. Most traditional Muslims do not subscribe to the fringe teachings of the Taliban and Al Queda; they are God-fearing people who want to live in a society where the traditional family values are respected. They are natural sympathizers of the radical Islamists, although they are not active supporters. We should not attack their religion and drive them right into the arms of the radicals. Many in the West tend to look at certain things, such as "honor killing", in the Muslim world, and conclude that Islam is outdated, and its followers barbaric. In reality, such practices are not the norm in the traditional Muslim society. On the other hand, a traditional Muslim probably finds partial birth abortion as revulsive as we find honor killing.
What I am not ready to agree with the author was his assertion that Bin Ladin and the Left in this country are in a conscious alliance. Regardless of how much their short-term goals and interests coincide with each other, there is neither logic nor evidence for an alliance to exist. The Left in this country are a pathetic bunch who want power, but it is one of those inevitables of a Western-style democracy.
EXTREMELY educational.......2007-07-30
This book did more to educate me about the 'whys' behind the current world situation than any of the many books I have read. Yes, there are many opinions given that sound like facts, but it is impossible to 'know' everything that is going on in this extremely complex situation. I am glad that the writer has gone out on a limb to push our thinking, to stretch us to believe that we may be part of the problem. Gee!! Hard to believe that, huh? I am in fact a conservative, but I don't 'blame' the left. It's like the boiled frog syndrome -- place a frog in boiling water and it will jump out. Place it in warm water and turn up the temperature slowly and it will die. What has happened to this country in the last 30+ years is like turning up the temperature slowly. We HAVE become a decadent society. Anyone who doesn't believe that has his head in the sand. Conservatives are as much to 'blame' as liberals because we have done such a lousy job of articulating our thoughts, and making them connect to the current world situation. The Bush administration has done a TERRIBLE job of educating the country. While I agree with much of what the Bush administration has done, I hold them 100% accountable for not providing a clear understanding of the world situation, and why America must do what it is doing. Perhaps no one in the administration has read D'Souza's book. It is surely not 100% right, but it sure helps put things in a lot better perspective than anything else I have read. Now the strategies HAVE to change. You cannot kill all the radicals. The Bush administration has been woefully weak in understanding the larger context for the Muslim violence around the world. We, the people of the USA, must become more educated, and FORCE our elected representatives to be more thoughtful, and less antagonistic to 'the other side'. Otherwise we have turned over to our children a terrible future.

Ariel Levy's debut book is a bold, piercing examination of how twenty-first century American society perceives sex and women. Writing vividly, she brings her readers to places she visited to make her assessment; the elevator of Playboy Enterprises with women auditioning to be Playmates in the fiftieth anniversary edition, a Florida beach where sunbathers urge a woman to take off her bathing suit for the camera crew of Girls Gone Wild, a San Francisco Italian restaurant where a lesbian worries she's not dressed up enough for her date, a CAKE party in New York, with women grinding each other's pelvises in time to pulsating dance rhythms, and outside a juice bar in Oakland where a beautiful high school student shares disappointment at her experiences with sex.
Levy cleverly leads us to explore the role models women aspire to emulate. We are not pursuing the confident, self-determined, powerful, free ideal the women's liberation movement would have dreamed for its daughters. Instead, our icons are porn stars and strippers and prostitutes. Paris Hilton and Jenna Jameson flaunt their successes in the pornography industry, and in doing so seem to earn our adulation.
Levy relates our embracing of this raunchy culture to unresolved tensions thirty years ago between the sexual revolution and the women's liberation movement, and amongst feminists; joy at discovering the delights of our clitoris conflicting with disgust at pornography's objectification of women. She creates a convincing argument by analyzing a diverse spectrum of material; presents a fascinating palette of interviews with revolutionary women's libbers, nouvelle raunchy feminists, and everyday women and men. Detailed facts and recurring names are sometimes cumbersome, albeit worth ploughing through for the `a-ha moments'.
The reality that we model ourselves on images whose "individuality is erased" is harsh, yet Levy's work is imbued with hope - hope that women can celebrate their uniqueness instead of their `hotness', explore their sexuality as delight rather than consume sex as currency, and succeed professionally because of their brilliant minds and personalities, not because of their brilliant bodies.--Megan Jones Ady
Book Description
Meet the Female Chauvinist Pig -- the new brand of "empowered woman" who embraces "raunch culture" wherever she finds it. In her groundbreaking book, New York magazine writer Ariel Levy argues that, if male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of women as pieces of meat, Female Chauvinist Pigs of today are doing them one better, making sex objects of other women -- and of themselves. Irresistibly witty and wickedly intelligent, Female Chauvinist Pigs makes the case that the rise of raunch does not represent how far women have come; it only proves how far they have left to go.

"Meet the Female Chauvinist Pig--the new brand of ""empowered woman"" who wears the Playboy bunny as a talisman, bares all for Girls Gone Wild, pursues casual sex as if it were a sport, and embraces ""raunch culture"" wherever she finds it. If male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of women as pieces of meat, Female Chauvinist Pigs of today are doing them one better, making sex objects of other women--and of themselves. They think they're being brave, they think they're being funny, but in Female Chauvinist Pigs, New York magazine writer Ariel Levy asks if the joke is on them. In her quest to uncover why this is happening, Levy interviews college women who flash for the cameras on spring break and teens raised on Paris Hilton and breast implants. She examines a culture in which every music video seems to feature a stripper on a pole, the memoirs of porn stars are climbing the best-seller lists, Olympic athletes parade their Brazilian bikini waxes in the pages of Playboy, and thongs are marketed to prepubescent girls. Levy meets the high-powered women who create raunch culture--the new oinking women warriors of the corporate and entertainment worlds who eagerly defend their efforts to be ""one of the guys."" And she traces the history of this trend back to conflicts between the women's movement and the sexual revolution long left unresolved. In the tradition of Susan Faludi's Backlash and Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth, Levy pulls apart the myth of the Female Chauvinist Pig and argues that what has come to pass for liberating rebellion is actually a kind of limiting conformity. Irresistibly witty and wickedly intelligent, Female Chauvinist Pigs makes the case that the rise of raunch does not represent how far women have come, it only proves how far they have left to go. "

Horror.......2007-09-18
This is one of the few books which has me claiming that I am a reader of horror... I read non-fiction.
Regarding the book itself though, the reason why I choose such a designation for it is because there were at least four times in the book at which I just stopped, with a feeling of despair, much like I would feel if I was reading a novel where the protagonist dies. The reason for this phenomena though, was because of the social insights which Ariel Levy reveals.
Not too long ago, I decided to get involved with feminism, and I found it odd that there were a lot of cases of activities within its embodiment which seem to support things which serve to objectify women, under the name of empowerment. This is one of the points Levy points out, although I think it's equally said for both society in general, modern feminism, and the gay community.
Additionally she points out in great detail how the commercialization of sexuality today is expressing itself in many women, which is unfortunate because it has less and less to do with trust and comfort (the minimum I think required for a meaningful sexual encounter) and more to do with accumulation of status and power.
Overall though, I highly recommend this book.
finally, somebody showed that sexuality isn't about being a stripper........2007-09-11
the fascinating thing about this book is the way it challenges its readers...men AND women...to broaden their sexuality. sexuality should never just be strippers, prostitutes and sex workers, or scantily clad women who don't know what they want. after reading plenty about women who are in these professions and chose to be (withOUT a history of abuse plaguing them), it was more noticeable to me that levy was making her main point that these women are doing this because we are told that this is what sexuality is...not because women WANT to do it. as a matter of fact, she touches very explicitly on the fact that most women DON'T know what they want, other than to be wanted...and that they will do anything to feel that desire from others. What happened to a woman's individual sexual desire and why must it be captured in raunch culture? With raunch culture, no one wins--men are told that they're not men if they don't love strippers and fake boobs, so this is all they've got to be turned on by. women aren't sexy then, if they're not doing these things that are supposed to be "sexual." it's a vicious cycle--women give the men what they are supposed to want, and men continued to be attracted to what they are 'supposed' to be attracted to...and no one wins. it's amazing that many men asked levy to write a book about men and raunch culture as well--the segment on 'the man show' really said it all.
not only this, but the ideas of what is 'masculine' and 'feminine' are really challenged in this book. women are either trying to desperately to be a caricature of a man or a caricature of what a woman is supposed to be sexually. you don't have to be frigid to be a feminist...you just have to know that you WANT what you're asking for...that it turns you on, arouses you...that you DESIRE it for more than just being wanted. but stop trying to be a 'man.' the pinnacle in levy's work is when she begins to quote women who don't want to be 'girly girls,' and instead are sleeping with men haphazardly and not caring--not because it arouses them, mind you...but because they don't want to be the committed girly girls--in order to be more like 'men.' but who, levy asks, is this mythological man we are all trying to be like?
women who consistently try to identify traits of theirs as more 'masculine,' will hopefully feel differently after reading this book--if you are a woman, you are feminine...no matter what...by virtue of BEING a WOMAN. and a man who likes to read and dress nicely is still masculine...by virtue of being a man.
excellent read.
Trying To Keep From Drifitng Away While Celebrating Freedom From The Anchor.......2007-07-16
Let me state that this is a combination of a book review and a commentary of Ariel Levy's book "Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture."
First, this is a book that does need to be written. It does give plenty of slop and mud to wallow in like a pig (I'm trying to score some humor points here): This is not for children. It deals with sexuality not to titilate but to expose, but it still is pretty graphic.
The theme of this book is that true feminism is not expressed by sleaziness, by complete lack of physical and sexual restraint. Levy is right on the money here.
The book is well written, and keeps one's interest. It is well documented, and the documentation does not come across as manipulative. I applaud this book's purpose.
Now for my commentary, which leads to a problem. In pointing out the problem of when one drifts too far from the standard, Levy ignores that this is a natural consequence of rejecting the standard. I can tell she feels the influence of evangelical Christianity in politics is a danger, and she takes the normal stand that abstinance alone doesn't work, ignoring the obvious fact that the only time abstinance fails is when it isn't practiced.
In other words, the real solution to the raunch culture is not to try to be balanced in our rebellion from our Judeo-Christian ethic, but rather a return to it. Levy's system cannot condemn the raunch culture as wrong (at least consistently).
There is much we agree on, but I believe Levy is trying to solve the problem without applying the solution.
Great!.......2007-07-11
Not perfect, though.
Mothers who buy brazilian waxes for their daughters and let them dress like whores are trying to live through them. Too simplistic? Too obvious? The truth can be just that. Mature women are almost openly despised at this point in time, and it is a major feat for a middle aged woman in America to get through her day with all her self-esteem intact.
Historically, women were what men rebelled against; that is, women enforced social rules of decorum, manners, sexual restraint. (as men demanded!) Women also were charged with maintaining order, peace and harmony in the family. Past that, men were charged with protecting their young daughters from sexual predators.
Now, since feminism has become an insult and teenage women are valued for acting out men's pornographic fantasies for approval and money and women think that being like a man is the key to social power, the notion of protecting young girls has become a joke. Over and over the author states that the women screwing around do not do so out of pure sensuality and honest lust. Over and over she reveals that there is a disturbing attitude of misogyny permeating this FCP/"raunch culture", as in, for example, the chapter on lesbian "boyz". The message is that what MEN want and the way MEN act, is of central and overwhelming validity in this culture, and is something for all females to aspire to and imitate at whatever cost to their safety, sanity, intelligence and self respect. Just as I do not consider a male to female transsexual to be a woman, I do not buy the specious "gender" arguments that put down all differences in male and female as culturally conditioned. Specifically, women's sexuality is MORE powerful than men's, as researchers like Dr. Mary Jane Sherfey and Rebecca Chalker, among many, many others, have revealed. But as I stated before, and as the author repeatedly states, the women in their slutgear putting notches on their headboards are not driven by PLEASURE. Most of them do not have orgasms, and she even quoted a teenage girl as saying that it would be "weird" to go after sex out of a simple passionate desire for the experience in and of itself..bliss, orgasm, sensuality, delight.
The book is not perfect; the 60's "sexual revolution" cannot be entirely to blame for "raunch culture". But thank God she wrote it. I hope others, from other authors, will follow.
Great book.......2007-06-19
You don't need to be a feminist to love this book. If you watch the world around you, you will notice that something in it is not right: the way a lot of women define their sexuality. Levy's book contributes to give an explanation of why some women find attractive or think that's necessary to exploit a limited part of their sexuality in order to feel liberated and empowered ... when actually they're contributing to perpetuate those stereotypes and ideas that keep women in disadvantage in our society.

General Smedley Butler's frank book shows how American war efforts were animated by big-business interests. This extraordinary argument against war by an unexpected proponent is relevant now more than ever.

A truth bullet right in the forehead.......2007-09-03
The word "classic", like other words in the abused English language, is regularly misused. It is not misused in describing this book. And at the pittance required to buy this edition, it can also be described as the biggest bargain you will encounter all year. To call the book an "anti-war" classic is not as accurate as it might be, however, because Gen. Butler envisions the need for a standing army and navy to defend the nation. He is merely horrified at these forces being sent to fight other people's wars. Especially at the cost of all wars.
Gen. Butler writes between the two World Wars. Having earned an estimable reputation among the troops he led, he proceeded not to desert them after the war was over. He sided with the bonus marchers who built "Hooverville", and then he finished some thoughts he had been having about the role of the United States Marine Corps in a number of lesser American military adventures. He then wrote this pamphlet to explain why the country needed to rid itself of the conmen who keep taking it to foreign wars.
The work is divided into five sections:
1. War Is A Racket!
2. Who Makes the Profits?
3. Who Pays the Bills?
4. How to Smash This Racket!
5. To Hell with War!
As another reviewer has noted, Gen. Butler rendered even greater service to his country after leaving the Marines than while serving actively. In prose that is utterly direct and unadorned, he outlines the nature of war, the identities and profit margins of the criminals, the role of the propagandizing press, and the victims of the fiscal enterprise of war. He then suggests a practical method for removing the profit from the business of war: simply conscript every owner, manager and employee of the war-making industries into the war effort, 30 days before the troops are called up, at the same pay rate as the enlisted man. During WWI, that was $30.00 per month. It is an idea so simple and brilliant that it will never be tried, unless, of course, the entire population suddenly has the wool pulled from its eyes, and passes the requisite law. As a test of industrial patriotism, this idea has no peers.
(My idea for educating the masses would be to make every thirteen-year-old boy and girl read this book, pass an exam on it, and then administer the book and the exam to their parents. This would be an annual event, and a general election would be held as soon as the parents had passed their exams.)
It is depressing to read this book in 2007, note that it was written in 1935, and reflect that nothing has changed. It is also heartening to realize that the solution to the problem of war is to convey the meaning of one four-word sentence to the masses. That sentence is the title of this book. Even in a time of sinking literacy levels and short attention spans, I can imagine no more worthy project for our country.
A must read for American Citizens.......2007-07-25
While I don't agree with all of Butler's recommendations (among which is, never fight a war), many of his recommendations are great. His documentation of the Facist plot he exposed is very important. (BTW: Prescott Bush was a co-conspirator in these coup-plans, as documented by the BBC.)
Facism was a threat then, and given the growing corporatism in the USA, a threat now.
People never learn........2007-07-23
This small book is timeless in its message. Written before WW2, it applies to much of what has happened since. As Butler wrote, " Why don't those damned oil companies fly their own flags on their personal property - maybe a flag with a gas pump on it." Two Iraq wars prove Butler's prescience.
Read this now.......2007-05-14
One of the most important books ever written by an American military figure, General Butler explains why war is a crime fought for the financial gain of a tiny class of society. This is extremely relevant for all Americans trying struggling to end wars of conquest and profit.
What Seems Is Not Reality - Read This Pamphlet.......2007-04-24
I am torn in giving this small collection a rating. In terms of importance, I would give this booklet five stars. In terms of writing style, it would earn one star. Nevertheless, this is the kind of book you must read, for it will shatter your illusions, should you have them, about the nature of American military might. These words, from pen of the most decorated American general, Brigadier General Smedley Butler, form a well supported middle finger in the face of American hegemony and neo-colonialism.
From a literary standpoint, this is not a book. It is a collection of short essays, written as you would expect a brash general to write. "War is a Racket" is but one of a several essays in this short book. In addition to its namesake, the booklet also contains an arguments against American intervention in World War II, and a photo essay of the horrors of war.
I would recommend this booklet to anyone going off to fight yet another war based on lies and secretly intended for the profit of the ruling class. Parents, read this before considering allowing your child to join forces of evil.
Book Description
Written by a non-Jewish analytic philosopher, this book addresses the issue of whether, and to what extent, current opposition to Israel on the liberal-left embodies anti-Semitic stances. It argues that the dominant climate of liberal opinion disseminates, however inadvertently, a range of anti-Semitic assertions and motifs of the most traditional kind. It advocates a return to an unrestricted anti-racism which would allow liberals to defend Palestinian interests without demonizing Jews.

Very thoughtful and well-written.......2007-06-24
This is a careful work on the nature of the resurgence of anti-Semitism. We see the ill will, the falsehoods, and lack of logic displayed by the anti-Semites, and there's some speculation on what gets some folks to behave in such a manner.
Bernard Harrison starts by discussing some of the properties of political anti-Semitism. He says that it generally includes, as a minimum, the proposition that Jews are a mysterious, depraved, and conspiratorial society which threatens the well-being of any nation which harbors them. And he reminds us that many of the accusations made against "the Jews" are simply self-inconsistent or incoherent. For example, the blood libel accusations are generally of the form that observant Jews commit ritual murder for religious reasons, something which is, of course, expressly forbidden by their religion. We also generally see anti-Semites simultaneously claim (or imply) that Jews are so powerful as to be responsible for the bulk of the evil in today's society yet are so powerless that they can be attacked with impunity (I tend to believe that those who make such claims are more serious about the latter one).
We also see discussions of the preposterous claim that mere criticism of Israel is sufficient to get one automatically branded as an anti-Semite. As well as another ridiculous claim that almost anyone who finds anything about Israel that is worthy of support is Jewish, and that pretty much anyone who is Jewish supports Israel. And the even more absurd claim that Israel is basically a colonial enterprise is also quickly refuted.
Harrison also is careful to distinguish between explaining why Israel exists and justifying Israel's existence. I agree. The fact that Jerusalem had been (and still was) the Jewish capital city in the 19th century helps explain why many Jews tried moving to the region once they had the opportunity to do so. The White Paper of 1939 helps explain why the number of Jews who demanded a Jewish state quickly became a majority once World War Two broke out. But these facts, by themselves do not "justify" what happened, nor do they "establish" Israel's "right to exist."
The author does write about fascism and the concept of "total war," including war against civilians. Here, he makes an excellent point, namely that claims about the "guilt" of such civilians make no sense. As he explains, even if one assents to the idea of capital punishment, "punishment" makes no sense without the concept of desert, desert makes no sense without a practicable and practiced system of laws, laws require some general acquiescence in their operation, acquiescence requires reconciliation, and reconciliation requires all sides to admit their own errors and as a minimum the right of their adversaries to exist. Obviously, any bunch of gangsters can go around murdering people, but we ought to remind ourselves that they are not necessarily "punishing" those who "deserve it."
There is a discussion about whether or not there ought to be a "Holocaust Day" for remembering that societies can make some terrible moral mistakes. Here, Harrison is careful to explain that the emphasis on the suffering of the victims is probably misplaced, as plenty of people have suffered in all sorts of tragedies. No, the emphasis ought to be on the terrible results, systematic annihilation of groups of people, of a certain kind of corruption which springs from a philosophy of racial superiority. Again, I agree. I'm not so sure we need a Holocaust Day, but I certainly do not buy the argument that such a day makes the Jews special, or makes Jewish blood worth more (or less) than the blood of non-Jews. The author makes the point that some people are envious of the sympathy that they think some Jews receive for the Holocaust and wish to use that word (often without its actual meaning) to get some sympathy for themselves. I find such an idea doubly misguided, as I tend to agree with Herzl that even appeals for sympathy by the genuinely oppressed are futile and dishonorable.
Some folks do insist on "dismantling" Israel, and Harrison discusses this at length. Here, he makes another good point, namely that the would-be dismantlers do not seem to worry much about how to protect the rights of the Jews in the region after the "dismantling." Instead, we see one anti-Israeli claim to be worried about the "fate" of the Jews, as if the Jews ought not have rights and as if whatever happens to the Jews is not only the fault of the Jews, but something the rest of us can't possibly prevent or be responsible for.
The lack of logic of some anti-Semitic claims does get exposed. We see the "mysteriousness" of the Jews used as a means to explain how the Jews can accomplish vast crimes even when they lack both motive and opportunity. Of course, when it gets to claims that "the Jewish lobby" has managed to reduce "the entire American political establishment to a state of bemused sleepwalking" for the past forty years, Harrison explains that we're not only talking about Jews doing the impossible, but about the American people being quite a bit stupider than they really are.
Near the end of the book, the author asks if anti-Semitism matters. Does it matter that the Guardian spouts a fair amount of it? Well, yes, it does. The terror we see is not helping Arabs, Jews, or anyone else. And responsible people ought to feel bound by a duty to support truth and facts. Harrison says that while one can live without understanding world affairs, one can't "live perfectly well on a diet of murderous lies. Europe tried that in the 1930s. It would do well not to try it again."
I highly recommend this book.
Focused, well-argued, important.......2007-01-15
I write as a long-time leftist, writer on Marxist theory, and charter member of the New Left.
Harrison brings a precise philosopher's intelligence to the vexing, frightening, and at times disgusting phenomenon of left-wing anti-semitism. If his history is at times one-sided and his account of the left simplistic, he has nailed the many failures of left moral clarity and intellectual imagination. If you've ever wondered why and how seemingly liberal, left, anti-racist, nice people can hold such distorted views on Israel, this is an excellent book for you. If you think of yourself as progressive and think Israel has no right to exist, or is the sole cause of the conflict, you'd better read it immediately.

In this powerful indictment of George W. Bush's White House, environmental attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., charges that the administration has taken corporate favoritism to unprecedented heights -- threatening our health, our national security, and our democracy.
Kennedy lifts the veil on how the administration, in order to enrich its corporate paymasters, has eviscerated the laws that protect our nation's air, water, public lands, and wildlife. He describes the White House doling out lavish subsidies and tax breaks to energy barons while allowing the corporations to profit by poisoning the public and eliminating security at the more than 15,000 nuclear and chemical facilities that are prime targets for terrorist attacks. He shows how right-wing White House ideologues have taken the "conserve" out of conservatism and trampled the free-market democracy in favor of a kind of corporate-crony capitalism that is as antithetical to democracy, efficiency, and prosperity in America as it is in Nigeria.
Crimes Against Nature is a book for both Democrats and Republicans, people like the traditionally conservative farmers and fishermen whom Kennedy represents in lawsuits against polluters. "Without exception," he writes, "these people see the current administration as the greatest threat not just to their livelihoods but to their values, their sense of community, and their idea of what it means to be American."

"
In this powerful and far-reaching indictment of George W. Bush's White House, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the country's most prominent environmental attorney, charges that this administration has taken corporate cronyism to such unprecedented heights that it now threatens our health, our national security, and democracy as we know it. In a headlong pursuit of private profit and personal power, Kennedy writes, George Bush and his administration have eviscerated the laws that have protected our nation's air, water, public lands, and wildlife for the past thirty years, enriching the president's political contributors whilelowering the quality of life for the rest of us.
Kennedy lifts the veil on how the administration has orchestrated these rollbacks almost entirely outside of public scrutiny -- and in tandem with the very industries that our laws are meant to regulate, the country's most notorious polluters. He writes of how it has deceived the public by manipulating and suppressing scientific data, intimidated enforcement officials and other civil servants, and masked its agenda with Orwellian doublespeak. He reports on how the White House doles out lavish subsidies and tax breaks to the energy barons while excusing industry from providing adequate security at the more than 15,000 chemical and nuclear facilities that are prime targets for terrorist attacks. Kennedy reveals an administration whose policies have ""squandered our Treasury, entangled us in foreign wars, diminished our international prestige, made us a target for terrorist attacks, and increased our reliance on petty Middle Eastern dictators who despise democracy and are hated by their own people.""
Crimes Against Nature is ultimately about the corrosive effect of corporate corruption on our core American values -- free-market capitalism and democracy. It is about an administration, the author argues, that has sacrificed respect for the law, public health, scientific integrity, and long-term economic vitality on the altar of corporate greed. It is a book for both Democrats and Republicans, people like the traditionally conservative farmers and fishermen Kennedy represents in lawsuits against polluters. ""Without exception,"" he writes, ""these people see the current administration as the greatest threat not just to their livelihoods but to their values, their sense of community, and their idea of what it means to be American.""

Blames far too much on Bush.......2007-10-13
I can only spot one glaring error:
On page 2, the author states, "I want to be very clear here: This book is not about a Democrat attacking a Republican administration."
If I had a dime every time he used the phrase "right wing," the book would be free.
Nothing's "left wing" just right wing. He seems to lay all blame for all time at the hands of George, Jr. Hey, the guy's made some terrible environmental blunders but I don't recall any radical environmental improvements during Bill Clinton's eight (8) years. In fact, I'll go record saying that the Clean Air Amendments of 1990 (signed by George, Sr.) have been the most significant air regulations in the last 17 years. Why didn't Clinton mandate and phase in all the CAFE standards during his tenure? Probably, because both parties of Congress have to address the economy first, the environment second.
Kennedy takes his environmental stance too far when he quotes a constitutent on page 85, "With a president who doesn't believe in evolution, it's hard to imagine what kind of scientific evidence would suffice..." By making the environment his religion, his arguments start sounding like fanatical ramblings.
Is Bush really responsible for Hurricane Katrina? For the polluted Hudson River? For all of America's pollution problems? Was all the environmental degradation done only on his watch? What about the failures of past president's and their lack of environmental leadership?
True, Bush has passed on his chance to wean us off foreign oil while improving the environment (primarily by addressing auto pollution and alternative technologies) but so has every president up to now.
Which pill would you like to take the blue pill or the red pill(CAN).......2007-08-19
Metaphorically speaking, Do you live on in ignorance (The blue pill) or do you lead what Aristotle called 'the examined life'(Red Pill). Do you read CAN or do you live in ignorance?
Crimes Against Nature was a real eye opener for me. You have to read this book. So much of the truth that should be available to the American public is squashed by various laws and phony junk science produced by special interest groups who want to control what we think. This book is filled with the facts.
For years I have read in the paper or heard on the news how various Bush appointed people have revoked various laws that protect our natural resources. Then once I read this book it all made sense and fully list all of the damaging laws that have been passed allowing for destruction of our natural resources.
There are so many shocking things in this book. The fact that so much of our country is controlled by the people who give money to our elected officials. I was very surprised to read in this book that Condoleeza Rice has an oil tanker named after her.
If I were to have named this book, I would have named it "Organized Crimes against Nature". Because everything I read has lead me to the conclusion that the acts perpetrated upon our natural resources have been pre-meditated.
I strongly recommend reading this book. God Bless Mr. Kennedy.
Not only is Mr. Kennedy an excellent writer, but he is a great Orator as well. You can check out his speaches on YouTube:

My Eyes Were Opened To The Truth.......2007-08-11
I gave this book 5 stars, because this book opened by eyes to things that I had no idea were happening. I knew some of the things that were happening, but not to the extent that it is happening. I know in my heart that Robert Kennedy Jr is telling the truth about the true condition of this country.
I would encourage all people who are interested in the truth to read this book. I know that many people will feel that Republicans are being attacked, but I don't think that is the intent at all, but RFK jr is exposing the reasons why we as Americans are being mislead to voting for people who lie to us. When is the last time Americans were encouraged to be the best they could be and put what was best for this Country first and make a positive change? Now we have Americans who are being scared and out of fear approve of policies that have led to America being hated across the world. For those who would think I am a die hard liberal Democrat I am an Independent. I just believe in shining the light on the darkness and believe that America is fighting for her very soul and I want to see America saved for future generations. So yes, I agree with RFK jr on his accessment and encourage this book to be read and passed on so that more people will be awaken to the truth.
My Nephew is in Law School and will be an Enviromental Attorney in Hawaii and that is just one reason I have started to really look into the issues of global warming, the enviroment, etc. I wanted to be informed so I could with knowledge encourage my nephew to choose a path that makes a difference for good. I hope that when my nephew is graduated that he will follow in the footsteps of Robert Kennedy Jr who is fighting for the American people. I do not want my nephew join the energy companies or others who have no concern about the future of this country. Anyway, I plan to give this book to my nephew which I hope will inspire him to choose the right direction when he graduates next June.
This book also answered questions about the Media. I know in my heart he is telling the truth about that as well. With the end of the free press we are in danger of loosing our Democratic Republic. We no longer have an informed citizentry who votes from knowledge of the facts, but bases their decision on misinformation and sound bites.
It takes great courage to be willing to shine the light on the darkness. Robert Kennedy is doing that, not only with this book but with his life long work.
I look forward to reading more books on this issue and passing them on to my nephew while he is in Law School as he is making up his mind as to what direction he will go when he graduates this June.
Eating your own words.......2007-08-03
I loved this book when I read it. "Yes! Finally a real expose!"
But then I read Cape Wind: Money, Celebrity, Class, Politics, and the Battle for Our Energy Future on Nantucket Sound, which tells about how the Cape Cod elite, which of course includes the environmentally enlightened Kennedy family, and was appalled once again how NIMBYism could blind even the most devoted people.
Certainly read this book, because it is very much worth your time, but read Cape Wind afterwards, for even more insight into the politics of the environment!
impeach bush.......2007-07-03
If the allegations about corruption and lying described in this book are true, which they probably are because there where no denials from the white house, why is Bush still in office ? Why are the Democrats such toothless whiners, not taking action to rid the US of Bush and restore the values America was once respected and admired for? This Administration is kicking your values with their feet and is destroying your country and your kids heritage. Look at libby, why isnt there a huge Uproar in the US ? Be a patriot, impeach Bush !

Marxist, Socialist Nonsense.......2007-09-18
My son was assigned this book in a Christian High School. It is anti-Christian, anti-White Heterosexual Men, it is blashpemy against the Christian Church and goes so far as to strongly suggest that Jesus was a homosexual because he had intimate relationships with 12 men. It is a book full of hate for Christians, Capitalists and the white race. There is no balance and absolutely no statistics for the broad sweeping generalizations it makes.
Culturally Congruent.......2007-09-03
This book is offers such a diverse amount of information about various group populations. The only group it doesn't touch on is Ageism, but it is great for gaining inorfation from individuals who have been oppressed or discriminated in some way. Great for anyone interested in learning about diverse populations.
Great Anthology on Oppression and Liberation .......2006-10-29
I found this book to be a fabulous accompaniment to the Teaching for Social Justice and Diversity book. It succeeds in trying to cover an extremely broad subject area.
Are You Guilty of Commiting an -ism?.......2006-06-12
If you are white, you need to read this book to find out how evil your are. Then, you can begin deconstructing your whiteness.
If you are a person of color, you need to read this book to find out how helpless you are. Those evil crackers have been oppressing you, and you didn't even know it. It's time to get angry and play identity politics. You are not an individual, but the member of a tribe.
Gender, race and class determine everything from how you butter your toast in the morning to the direction the wind is blowing on any given day. I swear.
I read this book on my way to getting a California teaching credential and, while reading it, underwent an epiphany of Krakatoan proportions: We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Now go forth and conquer your -isms and everybody else's. You'll find that the feeling of moral superiority is quite heady. Ciao.
Multicultural Requirement for Teacher Credential Program, CA.......2006-03-01
Book is a collection of narratives from perspectives of each diverse group. Not a joy to read, but not bad for a college text either. Personally I would much rather read short narratives than long and boring texts.
However, the multicultural agenda is really what this is book is all about. Some readings are offensive; generalities are made and stir some controversy in and out of the classroom.
I rated it 3 stars because it is not as bad as most multicultural texts from other classes.

Challenging but worthwhile.......2007-08-13
I don't disagree that Creveling's book is a challenging read, but I do think it's a worthwhile and reasonably comprehensive text on the topics. Many of the methods presented require a certain level of sophistication to execute correctly. If you don't understand the material, maybe you shouldn't be trying to use some of the tools.
Designing for Six Sigma.......2005-02-03
Disclosure: I'm a competitor of Skip's in the Design for Six Sigma field.
Skip obviously knows his stuff - he's written one of the most detailed descriptions of DFSS around. His differentiation of a methodology for technology development and product development is an important concept. The book provides a detailed step-by-step description of how to design a product for Six Sigma performance.
However, the book is really a tough read. I've been working in the DFSS field for the last 7 years and I found it a tough go. The methodology descriptions, while detailed, suffer from a lack of examples or a case study.
My other critique is that Skip describes the DFSS "nirvana" - if your development process is a bit informal, you'll start asking yourself "How in the world will I ever get to DFSS?" Some thoughts around how to transition from a typical development process to a DFSS-based approach would have been helpful.
Finally, one of my clients handed this book out to virtually all their engineers at the beginning of their DFSS iniative. When, a year or two later, I'd ask the engineers if they had the book, the answer was invariably "Yes." When I'd asked if they'd read the book, however, the answer was just as invariably "No."
If you already know about DFSS, its a great reference. If not, go buy one of the introductory books first.

Nazis in Newark: do the ends justify the means?.......2004-03-04
This book is well-researched, well-written and well argued, but at its core the author's message is immoral. He glorifies the use of Jewish gangsters to beat up Nazi sympathizers in Newark during the 1930s. He also defends a wide range of government actions which denied these Nazi sympathizers their First Amendment rights.
It would be one thing if the Jewish gangsters were defending the Jewish community in Newark from Nazi abuse and harassment, but the author provides no evidence of this. Rather the Jewish gangsters, who called themselves the Minutemen, went out of their way to attack Nazi meetings and beat up the participants. I guess you could call these attacks pre-emptive, but Grover fails to show that the Jewish community was in danger of immanent attack. The author seems to believe that the mere presence of Nazis in public justified the use of violence against them. As obnoxious as Nazis were and are, that is a dangerous notion.
In making these thugs into heroes, Grover ignores that they were largely immunized from the consequences of their actions. Despite their flagrant use of violence, they always escaped serious punishment. Why? Because they were under the protection of a Jewish crime boss, who fixed things with the authorities. You call that heroism?
Finally these same gangsters were running protection rackets, corrupting unions and breaking strikes. And you can be sure that most of the victims of their criminal behavior were Jews. They were also used to prevent a rally in support of union organizing in Newark, lead by legendary socialist leader Norman Thomas, who, of course, was an enemy of anti-Semitism.
That Grover has no problem with this, as long as the Minutemen were beating up Nazis too, shows misplaced loyalties.
Still, it is an interesting book and a good read.
"Ex-Newarker's Reaction to 'Nazis In Newark" ".......2003-07-26
A masterfully written and meticulously researched
history of Nazi sympathizers in the Newark NJ area during the era from Hitler's rise to power until the start of World War 2, and the reactions and efforts of Newark's then large Jewish community to deal with the Hitler-sympathizers.
The book also contains the story of the Newark Third Ward legendary "Minutemen" ... youthful Newark Jewish musclemen, mobsters, and ex-boxers who broke up Newark-area Nazi rallies, cracked heads, and otherwise disrupted and made life miserable for the Hitler-followers.
The author, Warren Grover, is a native Newarker and Jewish community leader, as well as a Newark historian who relied on scores of interviews and insider sources who makes the reader feel like he or she is there as part of the action.
A book for all ex Newarkers and those with an interest in Newark
or Newark-Jewish history, and not to be missed.

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
In this eclectic anthology of essays, former cast member Jewel Staite, "Kaylee," philosopher Lyle Zynda, sex therapist Joy Davidson, and noted science fiction and fantasy authors Mercedes Lackey, David Gerrold, and Lawrence Watt-Evans contribute to a clever and insightful analysis of the short-lived cult hit Firefly. From What went wrong with the pilot? to What's right about Reavers? and how the correspondence between the show's creator Joss Whedon and the network executives might have actually played out, the writers interrogate the show's complexity and speculate about what might have been if the show Firefly had not been cancelled.

Keeping Firefly alive.......2007-05-15
Good reading material for a fresh outlook on a series that should still be in existance.
Lost without Firefly? You need this book!.......2007-05-13
This is not just a puff piece.
There are serious critiscms of aspects of the Firefly 'verse in this book. But for the intelligent discerning reader, this is just what you've been looking for--people who love Firefly but are willing to critically discuss it. You may not agree with the authors of the various essays but you will share their loss and enjoy their intelligent commentary on the show.
Not for Everybody.......2007-02-07
This book is great for those who wanted to dig a little deeper into the short-lived cult show, Firefly. It's primarily made up of brief essays based on the show by various writers. Some of the essays range from thought-provoking ("Who Killed Firefly?") to humorous ("Firefly vs. The Tick") to quite useful ("Unofficial Glossary of Firefly Chinese").
A few of the contributing writers seem to miss the point of the show, but it's sometimes worth hearing their point-of-view regardless.
So basically, the book works for those fans who rewatch the episodes for fun and would like to get another fix but definitely not for the uninitiated.
'Joss' Fine!.......2007-02-02
If you really loved the series, then you HAVE to get this book! It gives you several different views of the characters, plots, history and imangination of this stunning and highly entertaining show. I bought it for my brother, but I ended up keeping it for myself!
