Book Description

Saying all men are dogs is an insult to canines everywhere...

For animal behaviorist Miranda Sweet, pets beat people -- paws down -- and she's convinced that animals are sweeter, softer and a lot more predictable than the men she's been dating lately. So when she opens up her own animal clinic, she decides to focus on the species she understands, and forget about trying to fathom the murky depths of the male psyche.

While schizophrenic schnauzers and confused canaries are benefiting from her professional ministrations, her best friend Daisy is convinced that Miranda needs a little therapy, as well. Enter dishy photographer David. Even Miranda begins to think she may have been just a tad hasty in her analysis of men, and she finds herself reconsidering her position.

But just as she lets her guard down, her own past reappears, and Miranda must come to terms with the fact that she hasn't always been as sweet as she'd like to believe.…

5 out of 5 stars Behaving Badly.......2007-02-08

Miranda Sweets is an animal behaviorist. Things with her career are moving along nicely but her personal life is suffering. Miranda and her fiancé Alexander have recently split due to an incident, which left Miranda unwilling to stay with him. Another painful part of Miranda's past is bringing her down as well. Miranda was involved in something horrible that devastated another's life.

Sixteen years have passed since the event but Miranda has suffered the guilt and shame ever since. When an opportunity arises to make amends, Miranda hesitantly acts upon it. Miranda is not sure what to expect when she contacts David White again, but her growing attraction to him is certainly a surprise. Miranda knows she is falling for David but what will happen when he finds out who she is and what she has done?

Behaving Badly started off slow for me. There are a lot of details about the doggies' problems, and teases of several mysteries for a while. As the story progressed though, I became quite involved in the plot. I was very anxious to see what would happen between Miranda and David, both of which are wonderful characters. Miranda's parents and her best friend Daisy offer entertaining bits to the story as well. Animal lovers (particularly dog) will find reading Behaving Badly delightful. The suspense of the story and the endearing characters are what pleased me most.

3 out of 5 stars I've been spoiled by better British authors, but this wasn't bad.......2006-08-27

American readers have been deprived of some hilarious, wonderful British authors who write the best chick lit out there. We're finally getting a few of them published here. Isabel Wolff is one of the authors who has made the leap to the American market, and she's a pretty decent writer. Behaving Badly is an above average book with a likeable heroine and a good plot. But, I've been spoiled. I buy the best of the best when it comes to British chick lit by going to Amazon.co.uk. When you've read Sarah Mason, Melissa Nathan (who's been published here and who, sadly, recently passed away), Katie Fforde, Victoria Corby, Donna Hay, Catherine Alliott, and a host of other fantastic British novelists, Behaving Badly doesn't quite stack up. I've never understood why someone like Isabel Wolff gets published more here in the U.S. than some of these other great writers. Ah well. That's why I'm not in the publishing industry. But, Wolff isn't half bad. Her book would have been better without the masses of pages spent on the conversations at her puppy parties. She also spends way too much time discussing various random animal problems that the owners need help with. I had to skim through all of that to get to the more interesting action with her main characters. So, this is a perfectly pleasant read, but I just wanted it to be as good as the books I get from overseas.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining, with a lot of pathos.......2006-07-06

I was really impressed by this unusually entertaining, but also poignant book which had me laughing and crying in turn. Miranda Sweet is an animal behaviorist - or pet shrink. She has no problem working out the neurotic behaviors of the animals she sees at her clinic - whether it be deluded dachsunds, stir-crazy cats, or introverted iguanas. But understanding the behavior of men is not so easy. After one shocking incident newly single Miranda has given up on them altogether. But then she meets a handsome photographer - and they fall in love. But this gives her a huge moral dilemma - because she already has a dreadful connection with the guy from years before, which he does not know about. Should she confess to him the shameful thing she did, and risk him rejecting her - or keep quiet? The mystery of what it was Miranda did those years before, and which affected him so badly then - and still affects him now - kept me turning the pages. In addition to this darker part of the story there was lots of fun and humor with the animals themselves, and with Miranda's lovely friend, Daisy, whose long term boyfriend won't commit. But the overall theme of the book is about courage and also forgiveness - finding the courage to tell the truth - and the forgiveness to forgive. For me this elevated it far above the usual girl about town chick lit offerings into something very moving and worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2005-08-01

Isabel Wolff's "Behaving Badly" deals with Miranda Sweet who is an animal behaviorist (somewhat of a psychologist for animals) who helps her clients to understand why their pets are behaving in strange manners such as tearing the house down when his/her owner leaves the house or bullying other pets. Miranda enjoys her job immensely and is successful at what she does. Her love life however is not so great. Fresh from her breakup with an upcoming TV star, Miranda is determine to move on, with the help of her best friend. She met photographer David whom she believes would make a great partner but in order for the relationship to continue, she needs to settle a part of her past which haunts her daily.

It's a shame that "Behaving Badly" is not published in the U.S. as I think this is one of Isabel Wolff's better books. The plot was clearly written, the characters were likeable (especially Miranda's best friend, Daisy) and I find the problems that Miranda's clients had with their pets simply fascinating. The author also did a great job in keeping certain parts of the books a mystery to engage her readers to continue reading the book. Overall, this is a better than average chick-lit!

If you have a cat, the answer to the title's question is, almost by definition, yes. John Wright, certified animal behaviorist, has spent much of his career making house calls to advise the distraught owners of certifiably crazy felines. He covers a wide range of topics, including multiple-cat households, stress reactions, and the urge to punish. He brings understanding and humor to situations that are not so humorous when they happen to you (e.g., when your cat pees everywhere but in the box) and offers solutions that'll make sense to both you and your cat.

Book Description

Winner! 1995 Best Instructional Nonfiction Book —Cat Writers' Association "This is a delightful, practical, well-written, sensible, and easy-to-follow book…about living with cats and enjoying them." — John E. Saidla, DVM, Director of Continuing Education, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University Is Your Cat Crazy? provides feline fans with a wealth of practical information and entertaining stories drawn from Dr. Wright's long practice making housecalls on dysfunctional cats. Along with helpful suggestions on how to cope with the most common behavior problems, he shows cat owners how and when to pick out a new kitten, what determines a cat's personality, how to deal with multiple cats, and what works and doesn't work when it comes to kitty "discipline." Whether the problem is strange eating habits or disdain for the litter box, aggression or post-traumatic stress, Is Your Cat Crazy? will help restore order to a cat-crazy home.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Silly and unspecific.......2005-10-13

The author spends lots of time writing about details that are great for short stories, but not for "how to" books. Finally at the end of a chapter he'll give summary advice that is vague and really not helpful. For example: ...so make sure you litter box is in a place that doesn't upset the cat.... Duh.... If you are really bored and want to read details about dysfuncional cat owner and the guy who comes in and moves the feeding dish to make it all better, then this is THE BOOK for you!

3 out of 5 stars Too much of the same thing.......2004-09-03

My problem with "Is Your Cat Crazy" is that its a much thicker book than it needs to be. What information is there is good, but we get case after case of the same problems with the same solution. Probably 75% of the book is about litter box problems. There's one chapter devoted to the topic, and its a good chapter, but then virtually every other cat he encounters has litter box problems and he explains, again and again ad nauseum, what he did to solve them.

Aside from litter boxes issues, his advice is this: don't use physical punishment of any kind, distract the cat from bad behavior by throwing a toy, and administer anti-anxiety medicine or sedatives until the cat improves. If your cat is using his/her litter box, I just saved you $10.

5 out of 5 stars This guy knows stuff!.......2002-09-27

Had this book recommended to me when I inherited someone else's problem cat who refused to go in the box.

This book explained how the kitty brain works! I was able to watch and observe my kitty, get inside her head, and give her a box she would go in!

You must supply your own patience of course!

5 out of 5 stars Every page is full of amazingly useful information........2002-05-28

I am totally amazed by this book.
every page is so full of useful information.
I didn't expect the book to be this much useful.
It's so easy to read, fun, and enjoyable.
If only possible, I would give 5 million stars to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mine eyes have been opened..........1999-06-14

Wow! What a great book. With a background in experimental social psychology and more than a passing interest in animal behavior, this book did a great job of applying psychological principles I've learned to cat behavior problems. Most times I don't find this in books on animal behavior.

I found this book to be really interesting. In fact, now I'm wondering if his is a career path I would like to follow. I think Dr. Wright's career is fascinating and intriguing. I really loved the way he first completely presented the cat problem to us and then gave us the solution he used. I found myself trying to figure out what the solution was before I read it. Alas, most of the time I was stumped, but after reading the solution, it made complete sense.

If you love trying to understand your cat, or if you have behavior problems, then this book is for you! It's a must if you are serious about your cat!

As Androcles knew, it takes an unusual level of compassion and sensitivity--and certainly bravery, and perhaps even chutzpah--to find out where an animal is hurting and then ease that pain. Anthony Guglielmo's stock in trade is to do just that. A licensed massage therapist, he's been spending the last few years kneading out the aching muscles and complaining joints of a host of animal others: walruses, racehorses, ferrets, dolphins, rabbits, dogs, and even penguins, to name just a few.

Writing with Cari Lynn, Guglielmo explains how he came to develop his specialty, which is, he notes, perhaps less unusual than it might appear; circus trainers have been massaging their animals for years, and humans help relieve their pets' stress with every pat or stroke. Many scientifically trained veterinarians, the authors note, are increasingly coming to value alternative, nontraditional therapies, and though skeptics may question Guglielmo's method, it makes sense that any healing technique that relaxes fear and tension has at least a chance of achieving a beneficial end. "I assure all my patients," Guglielmo says, "that I believe in gentle massage--that it should feel good, not painful. The challenge of massaging an animal is somehow communicating this philosophy to them." The search for a means of communication, based on sympathy and understanding, underlies this gentle book, which animal lovers will enjoy. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Several years ago, massage therapist Anthony Guglielmo got a call for a strange appointment. "Will you massage my horse?," one of his clients asked. And so began Anthony's strange and wonderful adventure into the world of animal massage.

In The Walrus on My Table, enter a world where dolphins line up to take turns for their massages, beluga whales lean in for better contact, and high-strung horses grow calm and manageable under Anthony's soothing touch. Discover animal friends you will never forget. Meet:

* Nuka, the 1,800 lb. walrus. A series of injections left Nuka's muscles severely constricted on one side of her body, and this gentle animal could no longer swim.

* Molly and Josephine, two playful elderly dolphins. Though at first reluctant to allow Anthony's touch, by their second session these two line up impatiently, eager for his attention.

* Mambo Point, a racehorse who just couldn't win. Mambo's owner knew that this horse had potential... so why wasn't he performing up to his ability?

* Rudy, the hump-backed penguin who wasn't expected to live. Born with a life-threatening condition that made breathing difficult, Rudy's future looked uncertain...

* Reddog, who loved to sleep on his owners' forbidden bed-until a sprain got him caught in the act.

* Mickey, an independent Tabby, who relaxes so completely under Anthony's hands, she topples right over!

* Tab and Presley, the prankster bachelor dolphins of the aquarium, who love to play tricks on their trainers.

* Baby, the recipient of the first ever shark massage.

So, dive in and romp with Nuka and friends...and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2007-09-21

I checked this book out of the library several years ago and could not put it down. I felt drawn to these animals as much as he was. I am a licensed massage therapist, but want to work more with animals. They have so much to give and teach us. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars If you love animals you'll LOVE this book!.......2002-03-08

Anthony Gugliemo is the "Dr Doolittle" of the twenty-second century!

I had initially purchased the book because Anthony was going to be my new massage therapist. However, I've always loved animals, adopting dogs from local rescue organizations ; cats always coming to me to be petted, even snakes like me! So, I purchased the book, and on my first visit to Anthony I asked him to sign it. After I got home, I read it from cover to cover in one day, I JUST could not put it down. Animals have that sixth sense regarding humans who are guardian angels. I am sure that Mambo, Rudy (the penguin), Champ, Talon(the dolphin), and all other animals that he has touched (not just their bodies but their souls) will always remember Anthony.

For full information about the book, please click on the details section on the title.

P.S. Anthony is a WONDERFUL human massage therapist too!!)

5 out of 5 stars Puzzled.......2001-09-27

This is a really good read. The stories are interesting and well told, of a pioneer in alternative medicine for animals! I'm from a traditionalist medical background, so am a skeptic; but his techniques and results are quite believable and worth revisiting, even if I don't follow his rationale at all times. I was a little puzzled by the book's abrupt ending, as though some pages got lost on the way to the printer's. But it's a very good book, one I'll recommend.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2000-12-11

I am a fan of action novels, so when my wife handed me a copy of "The Walrus on My Table" I was unsure whether to read the book or not. After a couple of days I took the plunge. I'm sure glad I did. Cari Lynn's narrative of Anthony Guglielmo's endeavor into animal massage is a pleasureful and enjoyable read. The juxtaposition of human versus animal massage together with not all together well known tidbits about walruses, whales, horses, penguins, dolphins, and sharks was interesting and informative. Cari Lynn's writing style well paced and intelligent. This collection of stories invoked thoughts into the magic of a good massage and made me wishing for a good one.

5 out of 5 stars The Walrus on my Table.......2000-12-03

This is an excellent book. It made my laugh out loud as well as cry. I recommend it to all animal lovers.

"My ability to 'talk' with animals is a lot different from most people, and whether it was learned or taught I don't know. It doesn't matter what kind of animal it is--a snake, a dog, a bird . . . we talk to each other."
          --Warren Eckstein

Warren Eckstein is an American original, the most renowned animal therapist in America. Long before the term was invented, Eckstein was an animal communicator. In a career that spans more than a quarter century, he has trained guard dogs for the Mob, helped the pets of such celebrities as Al Pacino, Lily Tomlin, Rodney Dangerfield, and Kathie Lee Gifford, and--perhaps most important of all--he has saved countless animals' lives. Now Eckstein shares his unique, wildly offbeat story with us in an irresistible and candid memoir of a life devoted to animals.

Beyond his work with dogs and cats, Eckstein has befriended (and occasionally antagonized) a variety of "clients"--from goats, bears, and alligators to peacocks, tigers, and king cobras. He shares unforgettable encounters in which he was bitten by a python, de-fingered by a mongoose, and found himself locked in a lion's cage. Here, too, are hilarious anecdotes about sleeping with a pig and making a Fifth Avenue matron's dream of dancing with her dog come true.

In these outrageous and touching true stories that comprise an amazing life, Warren Eckstein holds us spellbound. In the end, we love not only his animals, but the man as well--the magician as well as his magic.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful autobiography of a very successful pet behaviorist.......1998-11-26

Warren Eckstein and Denise Madden, both self-proclaimed animal lovers have outdone themselves in composing their new book.

It is a personal, funny, sad, and loving look at Warren's colorful life. He is unlike other celebrity dog trainers. He is progressive in the way that he approaches animals and way ahead of his time in his attitudes toward animals.

This book captivates his love of animals, his experiences both as a child growing up in New York's Long Island and as an adult training celebrities' animals.

Warren's autobiography is entertaining and delightful. His love of animals and animal welfare comes accross very clearly. He is definitely not like his colleagues who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.

I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as I did and think of giving it as a gift for that animal lover in your family.

5 out of 5 stars "Wonderful, funny, heartwarming trip down memory lane.".......1998-10-07

It has been a lot of fun going down memory lane with Warren and to hear all his tales about the famous and infamous people and their pets that he met in his travels. How nice and thoughtful of Warren to share these very personal and poignant moments with his readers and fans. Whenever I read a book written by Warren I feel as though I am having a personal chat with him over a cup of coffee or a bottle of Schlitz ! While reading this wonderful book I have caught myself laughing out loud and I have also been saddened and brought to tears. This has been a true education for me as with all his books and I really appreciate all the hard work and love Warren and Fay, and now Warren and Denise have gone through to help God's creatures. In reading the book I feel this is a tribute to Fay and a healing for Warren. A wonderful tribute to Fay and all her hard work on behalf of the animals and her love for Warren. Yes, the circle certainly from his wonderful parents who gave us this wonderful and caring man work to Fay and now to Denise.
