Great book!.......2007-08-16
I just placed order for the book having read through the content online. Just reading through the content alone gave me assurance that it's gonna be a fantastic book.
This will become a primary reference source on your book shelf.......2007-07-17
I bought this text to help me bone up on electronics as part of my HAM Radio advocation. I did not expect such a complete work. As I said in the title you will use this as a reference for years to come. I feel like I got more than my monies worth!
I've read this book more than once........2007-07-01
This is a great introduction to electronics. If you're just starting out in electronics this book would make a great companion to your texts.
Clear simple explainations actually make it a fun read. You can easily read this one cover to cover.
My background is in electrical/computer engineering (graduated from Purdue Cal in 1996).

Customer Reviews:
full of errors, theory is pretty good though.......2006-08-20
Although to me some of the errors were obvious but for a beginner they might not be that obvious and you could get stuck with an error screen for hours and hours thinking YOU are wrong and the book is right, before finally discovering you need to adjust cause the book is just wrong.
they add four menu items for example, while in the image you see it are five. then in the code they work with five so you have to make the fifth one yourself and discover its name etc. Also they tell you to rename the buttons but in their code you can't follow anymore cause they didnt rename their own buttons.
This was just in chapter 1, the third day, which is the first real code writing lesson.
I can't understand why someone would give this book a five star rating. It's very confusing for a beginner with all the errors. But if you have a decent basis and you can easily discover the errors it might still be ok, but not highly recommended.
The difference between knowing, and being able to teach ..........2006-04-04
This might be the book for you, if:
- you need a crash course in VS.Net,
- you're pretty well-versed in Visual Basic 6.0
- you're pretty good at filtering out irrelevant praise for the product
- you are willing to skim through examples, getting the jist of things without actually trying to make them work
- you can't find a more carefully-written crash-course book covering the same ground
Then again, if you're that good to begin with, you can probably learn VS.Net without a crash-course book.
Cannot recommend this book.......2006-02-20
Unfortunately, the code examples in this book are fraught with careless errors. What's the point of picking up a book to learn VS .Net if the code examples don't work? Moreover, the author's claim (p.3) of a website featuring code samples, fixes, and other helpful materials to supplement the book is simply untrue. That website (http://www.vbasp.net) exists, but has nothing uploaded. I wasted many hours trying to get code examples to work before learning through Amazon.com Reviews that others have had the same problem. How disappointing.
Waste of money.......2005-08-31
As other reviewers have pointed out, this book has a lot of mistakes in it. How sloppy does an author/publisher have to be to put out a beginner's book where many of the examples don't work? It's a lot easier and more effective to learn this material by using the documentation that comes with Visual Studio.
Regrettably, it sucks........2004-12-21
I did not read the reviews before I bought this book on a friend's recommendation. I made a big mistake. The critics are right on target. This book needs major editing before it will be an aid to anyone. And while I've marked mine up and cannot therefore recover my $30, maybe I can save you yours.
Maybe if sales of this book die as a result of the reviews these publishers will think twice before rushing out so flawed a product. They should truly be embarrassed.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book to begin with game programming.......2007-07-25
This book is excellet for start learning game programming. If you have experience with Visual C++, this book is very easy to read. If not, don't worry, the book have an appendix for the basic C++ and Windows programming topics. The book covers topics like sprites, scrolling backgrounds, game engines and so on. This book use only GDI for drawing. DirectX is not covered in this book. Also multiplayer games thrugh TCP/IP is and advanced topic that is not cover here. An excellent book for beginners. It has a CD with all the code example. You can use the examples as a template for your own game project. It saves you a lot of tedious programming. I do it, and it works excellent!
Not for a beginer, and definatly not for someone who wants to learn........2007-07-05
The only redeeming factor of this book it the code works. Other than that this book is poorly put together. I have been programming for over 2 years. This book is my first serious dabble in game programming. The author early on makes many admissions. The first one is that not all of the programming code is in the book. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you are trying to learn and are unfamiliar with the widows api then this is terrible. I like to type the code up myself inorder to get a better idea of what is going on. He fails to do this. To further complicate things he intentionally avoids using OOP. For previeous reviewers who obviously didnt read a thing, he flat out says in chapter two that he will not use oop because he thinks that it would make things too complicated. I want to learn, I am not going to learn anything from this book if i am not doing it correctly. The nesxt problem is the Game engine really needs more explanation in the development and implementation areas. Its fine to show me code but explain why it should be doen that way. The programmer also uses some strange constructs that i had a very hard time deciphering. ex. if(!GameEngine::GetEngine()->Initialize(iCmdShow)). I have knowledge of programming and pointers and i still have no idea what this means or even why it was done. He does not explain the windows datatypes that are heavily used. As far as being able to do something new after reading this book, i can safely say that i cannot do anything new, except for copy line after line of code.
This book would be alot better if the author would explain what he is doing and how each of the parts of the program work. It may seem tedious, but every detail is needed if you are tyring to learn.
Quite good, but not perfect.......2006-08-10
First of all, sorry for my bad English :
I've been programming C++ for a little while and I decided I was ready to learn more complex subject like game programming (that's what I love). So I bought that book (the French version, but's it's nearly the same book).
The book is well writen, and the games you make are fun. First thing, a lot of code (and especially the more complicated code, like the Bitmap class), are not explained on the book. For exemple for the Bitmap class, you have to copy the code which is on the CD, and you don't understand it... And some code are really complicated, like thei Bitmap class (again), and it's really strange because he writes his own Bitmap loader, whereas there's a Win32's function to do exactly the same, easier,...
But the worst thing is that the game engine is not powerfull at all. I know it's a beginning book but it is bad builded... And finally, Win32 API is not made for games, and I advise you to learn SDL, which is made for video games,...
Great for novice C++ programmers.......2006-07-28
This book is exactly what it claims to be. My preferred development tool is Visual C++.NET, and I wouldn't even try to do a windows application using the windows API, which is what this book uses. However, the game engine that Michael provides takes care of all of the messy API details, and lets you dive right in to game programming with little knowledge of the windows API. The author takes you step by step through the game development process, building on the game engine features and programming techniques with great examples along the way. As far as I can tell, all of the source code provided on the CD compiled flawlessly. The CD also contained a good tutorial on the windows API, which I found very useful. If you are somewhat familiar with the c++ language, its OOP capabilities and want to do some game programming to advance your skill set or just to have fun, I think this book is a great resource to get started.
problems with the book.......2006-07-25
Hello all.
I have had this book for a little while now and I can't really say it was worth the money. As a C++ programmer the book expects you to know a great deal, so not a very good starter book.
To be honest you are probably better off learning windows first and spending a good while getting used to it before starting this book.
One of the big problems is the book is really a manual to using the book game engine, which is very feature poor, no tileable graphics etc. Many things are glossed over such as the sprite class, which tells you next to nothing about it and just expects you to use it, as is. I found this very frustrating since I wanted to know how it worked. To then get a section on setting up your joystick with pictures was just an insult. Space would have been better used explaining things better.
I found that I had gone through a few of the example games and really learned very little. I put the book down and moved on and only use it as a referance book every now and then.
If you want to write 2D games find a book on ditectX which teaches the 2D side, its quicker better documented and more up to date and easier in many ways, since most of the windows rubbish it not used.
That said I give the book 2 stars for effort.
For your information, I am learning directX 9 and don't regret it at all, even though my maths sucks which is not good.

Customer Reviews:
I'd like to re-review this and improve the rating........2006-12-25
Well, after dedicating a solid month, I can say I finally have figured it out. This is a great book with only some typos. The beginning is far too basic even for a pre-teen, but if you dont know this info, you shouldnt continue in the book.
I'm happy to say I can write simple programs now, and even made one for next April Fools!
teach yourself programming.......2005-08-17
That's exactly what is written on the cover. It's a good book for the people who know noting about programming and want to enter in this exiting field. The book is well written and gives you good idea about computer programming and teach you to program in Liberty Basic Which not the best choice from my point of view but it's free.
Words from a "wannabee programmer".......2004-12-29
As many other people in this world want to do, I want to program video games in the future. The only problem was that I had no idea how to start or where to turn to for advice. I had tried to learn over the summer of this year on how to create video games, but the books that I had borrowed from my local library said that I needed to have an understanding of C/C++. And when I borrowed a C/C++ book, I didn't really read it. So I decided to give programming up... for a while at least.
About a month ago, that itch to create video games came back to me when I was grounded. So I went back to my library and looked for a programming book that fit my needs. During my search, I stumbled upon "Sams Teach Yourself Beginning Porgramming in 24 Hours". And so I decided to read the introduction if I met the books requirements. When I learned that I did, I borrowed the book and began to read the book.
The book mainly covers a language called Liberty BASIC (which is probably is as easy a programming language as it gets). Right out of the gate, the book lets you program your first BASIC program, a rocket launch countdown. I was suprised how easy it was to program in Liberty Basic. To me, it felt like dumbed down English. When you are finished with the Liberty BASIC training (11 hours worth), you should have a good understanding of Liberty BASIC.
The book also gives you a detailed introduction to Java, but the first two chapters are only text and no examples. Those two chapters do help with the basics of Java and C/C++ (C is Java's "mother" language). When you do get to the programming part of the Java in the book (four chapters of Java in the book), you use Forte for Java (it already gives you the main code for your project). Unfortunately, I found Forte a bit intimidating at first, but when I played around with Forte a bit and got an understanding, I went through the chapters with ease.
The book also gives you a taste of other languages out there (Visual Basic, C/C++, HTML, Pascal, Javascript, and .NET) I say taste because it goes over the fundamentals of each of the languages entered there. You will find C/C++ easier to understand because of your work in Java.
There were some problems with the book that I found. First, there were some coding errors that I found. I found the most errors in Chapter 10, "Having Fun with Liberty BASIC". Most of the code I found put down on BASIC and ran could not run. How can you have fun with the program if you cannot run the code? More like "Getting Frustrated with Liberty BASIC". Also in Chapter 11, there is a sample code that seems to be bugged but isn't. When you get to the code that seems bugged (I forget which sample it was in the chapter) just expand the width of the window to get the result you want.
There were also many dry spells in the sample code for you to write down and practice. The ones that have little or no examples in them are Chapters 2-4, 12 & 13, and 16-24.
In my opinion, I would reccommend this book to anyone who is considering to explore the world of programming (either regular programming or video game programming) or anyone who wants to program but doesn't know where to begin. This book will not mold you into a good programmer, but it will lay down the necessary building blocks to becoming a regular or video game programmer.
I reccomend this book for video game programmers because it will give you a basic understanding of C/C++, the typical language of game programming (this information will be useful for other books that you have your sights on and if you get another C/C++ book, you will understand some of the subjects being talked about (arrays, literals, operators, basic C/C++ procedures, etc.)
Now I just need some help on what to do next...
What you would learn.... IF you took a class.......2004-07-16
Reads like an extended course description. Very few examples. Code examples are often incomplete so they cant be run. No real 'projects' to test any skills.
Comes with Liberty Basic (shareware) (you can download this seperately and learn more from its own help/tutorials). For the most part, you dont even need a computer to read this book. The code examples are only excerpts so you have to study them from the text in the book anyway.
What gets me more than anything is I found about 5 errors in code and text that are important! Things like mislabeled variables that would confuse anyone trying to learn. Although I guess finding the mistakes is a lesson in itself.
OK, that was the bad part, but I didnt give it a score of 1 because it is easy to read (fast). It does mention a wide range of topics, and it comes with a useable version of Basic (but only limited shareware, also there is a later version online). For a real beginner, this is one way to start off slow. It is disappointing because it could have been much better with only a little more effort. A few larger examples, and a few more actual coding projects instead of just saying 'if you want to create a text box in your program, type the following line....',
and then moving on to the next lesson.
This review relates to the 2nd edition.
begining programming.......2004-02-21
I would recommend this book for beginers, It explains the basics of programming, and also starts you off in java , c or c++ , although you do need the compilers for c and c++.
and also ultimatediscountbooksource@yahoo.com shipped it quickly and I had the book within a week.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-03-22
Ok, my written english isn't good at all, but I'd just wanna say how much I love this book. I have been studying html and css for some time now, and I already knew something when I bought this book, and what I think great about it is that it's so detailed about how the things work in html, xhtml and css that it's like if I was learning everything from the beginning again, but this time knowing exactly what I was doing and why.
Well, that's it.. sorry for my english.
For both beginners and experts.......2006-06-28
I've taught HTML and e-commerce at the university level for about a decade now. This book is the best I have found. I use it as my personal reference. I require it for my classes.
It covers the essentials. It gives clear examples. It is organized in a logical order that works. It can be used by someone who has never tried to build a web page, and also has enough 'meat' so that those who have been building pages for years can find useful information and tips throughout.
I just wish I could find books on some of my other subjects that are as well written and organized as this.
Ok.......2006-03-24
This book is ok. I had to get it for a class. The writing is alittle hard to follow, but it is a good reference.
Great for beginners.......2006-03-22
I purchased this book to use in a class I was taking. I had no prior knowledge of HTML, but this book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to designing web pages. I found the chapters very easy to follow and the exercises were kind of fun as you got to practice what you just read about. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn HTML.
BBB complaint going on.......2005-12-23
CD came damaged from xpresstext in which there is a large mark/scratch across the CD using priority shipping and after attempting to notify them and Amazon 4 times, no response until I contacted the BBB and Amazon will not help because I did complain to the BBB. Guess it is up to the BBB now.

Customer Reviews:
Its What You Need. Seriously!.......2004-11-11
I have been a Web Design and Developer since 1998. I picked up this book in 2002 because I wanted to learn how to create an online database program and a e-commerce store. I picked it up at my local book store and found that it was very easy to read.
Today, creating an online store in less than 21 days for any of my customers is not a problem.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to get their web development career started.
Use it for any type of online application.
Great book!.......2004-08-21
Very useful book with great code samples. Defiantly buy this book if you are looking to do some e-commerce programming with ASP 3.0.
Good book...great Instructor.......2003-05-11
Good book...great instructor. I bought this book a while back and since I've gotten so much from it, I figure I'll give it a plug.
If you've programmed in VB and have some ASP experience, then this is great book. A lot of the programming I've done has been within the context of a programming team. So, most of the time, I would work on a specific, limited portion of a program. For me, this book was great in that it guides me through the ENTIRE process of building a website by myself. Through working on the project in the book, I gained a good understanding of how to set up navigation for a website and also little tricks on state maintenance. (Coming fr. mainly a VB and SQL Server background, those were my weak points.) There are other little points that are too numerous to mention here. The style of the writing is clean and easily understandable. The author also gives alternative solutions to a single problem. An example, is the shopping cart. You are shown the implementation of a session cart and a database driven cart, and the pros and cons of each solution is discussed.
Anyway, to cut this short, I've built a number of websites all based on the code in here but fleshed out with SQL Server (instead of Access) and broke the implementation up into n-tier by implementing classes and objects. But that really is easy once I got the understanding and foundation of E-Commerce websites fr Stephen Walther's book.
I'm just wondering when Stephen is coming out with E-Commerce Programming with ASP.NET ... I'm sure it would be a blockbuster.

Good book to get the idea.........2003-01-21
This book is not an ASP reference, but rather it's an application of ASP programming: e-commerce. If you want to build an online store and want to learn the basics buy this book. After getting the idea you can improve upon it by reading some other materials.
I teach using this book.......2002-07-29
I teach ASP in the California State University system and my students are generally happy with this book. It provides enough source code you could make a shopping cart and catalog and understand what you are doing and why you were choosing to do it with Session variables or not. There is definitely some annoying errata, and the source code doesn't match entirely with the source on the CD. I was disappointed in it's coverage of password protection. So, this is far from a perfect 5.
Someone could get up to speed with ASP pretty quickly with this book. I use it to teach ASP to a cross-section of students with moderate computer backgrounds--not computer science majors. It does not cover the basic functionality, like loops and variables, so a better book for beginners may be one such as Learn ASP in 21 Days. That is if you are still teaching or learning ASP rather than dot-Net. And I honestly don't know which is best to learn at this transitional point. I find ASP very simple to learn and teach from books like this that just tell you what to do, show you, and let you do it.

5 stars for the user totally new to Excel / PCs.......2002-06-05
I am an Excel instructor. This is the book I reccommend if your student (or you) are clueless about what Excel is or how to use a spreadsheet program. Step-by-step and lots of screen shots. If you're not clueless, get a more advanced book.
An excellent book for the teach-yourself person.......2002-03-04
This book just beats the tar out of the comparable ". . . For Dummies" and ". . . For Complete Idiots" analogs. The exercises step you through all of the basics of Excel and the color images show you what will really be on the screen. Each step is clearly marked and there are no obvious leaps to another level. Various shades of black and white can show a great deal, but there are times when only color will do. This is especially true when color coding is used to differentiate different key aspects of the display, which is done in Excel. This is the book that I recommended be adopted for future classes in Excel and the one I would use if I were to teach the class again.
from novice to advanced in under 3 hours.......2000-08-26
This is my first experience with this series, and what a positive experience it was! The layout is very easy to follow, the diagrams are accurate and attractive, and the text clear. I barely knew how to use Excel at all when I started, but after under 3 hours with the book, I'm confident that I could do any major project just using the information I learned while reading it. Kudos to whoever designed the order of difficulty and chapter headings, because the progression of ideas naturally follows. The chapters on using complex formulas and creating charts were particularly strong. In fact, even if you don't know how to use your mouse, if you read the book chronologically, you'd learn that too, followed by of course more complex things. I knew Excel was a powerful program. After reading this book, I feel that I can put that knowledge to work in practical ways. If you are a visual learner and have trouble following the "Idiot Guides," this series is a great alternative.
Each Step Thoroughly Explained.......2000-04-06
I love these books...this one didn't disappoint me. It is great for beginners and good for advanced users, as well. I love the color, the layout, the extra comments, explanations, and suggestions.

A beautifully designed and produced book, Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually defines state-of-the-art presentation in how-to software books for beginners. With its truly helpful full-color illustrations, intelligent text, and logical organization, this book will improve the skills of anyone new to Office 2000.
Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, and Outlook. Generally, the authors concentrate on the fundamentals of each application, such as formatting text in Word, inserting columns into an Excel worksheet, and re-sequencing PowerPoint slides. Most new Office 2000 users will gravitate toward the standard tasks described in the book when introduced to the software.
For each of the covered software capabilities, the authors present a graphic that encapsulates the concept at hand (such as a crane dropping information into a spreadsheet to illustrate the idea of inserting columns). They then show a series of screen shots, enhanced with commentary explaining how the task is done in the program itself. It's easy to follow the book's lead on your own computer.
Once in a while, the authors choose to omit relevant details for the sake of their simplified format. That's okay, but this book would be stronger if it included references to other books with more detailed information. Overall, however, this is a superior book on the critical fundamentals of working with Office 2000. --David Wall

Review from an instructor.......2003-05-04
As a teacher both in the public schools and as a corporate contractor, I could not advocate this book higher. It has become the course book of choice for my students and is better suited for starting computer users and intermediate level users than ANYTHING else I have found.
As an aid to teaching, for self instuction and at times as a reference for the starting user, this title is invaluable.
Good Place to Start.......2001-07-04
This is a very good book for novice to beginners who know how to use only the obvious features. This book introduces you to a good foundation of details. As the level of the book is Beginner to Intermediate,as stated on the book itself, you will need to read another book on Office 2000 for Intermediate to Advance skills. But this is a great place to start.
Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually.......1999-12-09
I feel that this book is the best book for learning Office 2000. It is easy, but has a lot of information. I have never seen a better computer book, and I hope they make more like this. This book is for people who know older Office programs and those who are trying Office for the first time. If you really want to learn it fast and easlly try this book. This book does not waste words or your time.

Maybe 24 Days.......2005-11-21
Another book where the author is tech savy and assumes the beginner already knows something about photoshop. Many basic steps are left out or assumed and this makes learning and moving on to following chapters almost impossible. Not for teaching yourself if you are new to adobe photoshop.
Glaring Omission.......2005-07-27
As I have been wading through this book for the past week, I have found it more and more difficult to understand. This book's glaring omission in my opinion is its lack of physical graphic images that I can manipulate. We need to see before-and-after examples done with our own hands that explain what she is talking about. The first image that you can download on line is well into chapter 3. I got the most frustrated with the "Cut and Paste" section in chapter 3 which had no photos on line for me to recreate with her, and her explanation of how to Paste was non-existent. It was at this point that I decided to move on to another book.
Mistake ..........2004-01-17
... even after reading the above reviews I decided to give this book a shot. Bad idea. There are a few typos in the book that are annoying, but not really enough to lead you completely astray. Unfortunately that is about as good as the book gets. There is a complete lack of really good visual aids, diagrams, pics, and step by step "how-to's". Carla Rose also will use terminology that isn't explained until later on, making things more confusing. Additionally all the screen shots are in Mac, not Windows, which may or may not effect the examples. This book is not for the beginner. I would look else where.
good for beginners.......2003-12-27
This book, like many of the SAMS 24 hour series, is a good and fast introduction to the program. If you don't have the time to wade through a thousand page tome on Photoshop this book will quickly get you up and running.
My only complaint is: the download for the images used in the book only contains one picture per chapter. Not every illustration as mentioned earlier.
This book is terrible.......2003-11-20
Maybe the so called expert thinks this book is a 5 Star but take it from a novice, this book is absolutely terrible. Think twice before you buy.
