Soft Matter Physics: An Introduction
Maurice Kleman , and Oleg D. Lavrentovich Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0387952675 |
Book Description
Many materials have complex structural and dynamic properties intermediate between those of crystals and fluids. Among these are liquid crystals, with their well-known orientational order; colloids; polymer solutions and melts; foams; and gels; collectively these have come to be called "soft matter." These materials generally consist of organic molecules that interact weakly; as a result, thermal fluctuations, external fields, and boundary effects strongly influence their structure and properties. This sensitivity raises interesting new problems in basic physics, chemistry, and materials science; offers a path of thinking about some processes in biological systems; and opens numerous possibilities for technological applications. This textbook for graduate students in physics or chemical physics begins with a discussion of chemical bonds, interactions between particles, and the resulting molecular arrangements. The concept of order parameter leads to a discussion of phase transitions, elasticity and dynamics, followed by a review of fractals and growth phenomena. A significant portion of the book deals with defects of topological nature that accompany various types of order. The book concludes with chapters on surface phenomena, stability of colloidal systems, and structural properties of polymers. The detailed exposition, the emphasis on physical principles, and the exercises at the end of each chapter will make this book a valuable introduction for graduate students and researchers to this rapidly growing field.Customer Reviews:

This book covers the fundamentals of conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) as applied to crystalline solids. Emphasis is on the experimental and computational methods used to quantify and analyze CTEM observations. A supplementary website containing interactive modules and free Fortran source code accompanies the text. The book starts with the basics of crystallography and quantum mechanics providing a sound mathematical footing for the rest of the text. The next section deals with the microscope itself, describing the various components in terms of the underlying theory. The second half of the book focuses on the dynamical theory of electron scattering in solids including its applications to perfect and defective crystals, electron diffraction and phase contrast techniques. Based on a lecture course given by the author in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, the book is ideal for graduate students as well as researchers new to the field.Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy.......2007-02-16
Excellent.......2003-08-21
Although I found the mathematical formalism that makes up the middle of this book excessive, it is important for people who will be modelling TEM experiments. The remainder of the book, on TEM basics, operation, and image/SADP interpretation, are all excellent.
This book is an excellent CTEM text.

Interaction of Photons and Neutrons With Matter: An Introduction
Sow-Hsin Chen , and Michael Kotlarchyk Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 981022026X |
Book Description
This book is based on lecture notes developed for a one-semester graduate course entitled "The Interaction of Radiation with Matter", taught in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The main objective of the course is to teach enough quantum and classical radiation theory to allow students in engineering and the applied sciences to understand and have access to the vast literature on applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in materials research. Besides presenting the fundamental physics of radiation interactions, the book devotes individual chapters to some of the important modern-day experimental tools, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, photon correlation spectroscopy, and the various types of neutron, x-ray and light-scattering techniques.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry. It is designed primarily for a sophomore inorganic chemistry audience, but could also be used as a supplementary text for some general chemistry courses. Coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry are each given their own self-standing sections, so that the reader can begin in any one of them without becoming frustrated at references to previously learned material. These self-standing chapters also allow you the flexibility to present material in the order you choose.Customer Reviews:

Quantum Theory of the Solid State: An Introduction (Fundamental Theories of Physics)
Lev Kantorovich Manufacturer: Kluwer Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: Accessories:
ASIN: 1402021534 |
Book Description
The book targets a broad readership. First of all, it targets young researchers (postgraduate students) in solid state physics (both physicists and theoretical chemists) as it contains a wide and comprehensive coverage of all important branches of the subject including an up-to-date survey of recent revolutionary advances in quantum mechanics which have made it possible not only to calculate many properties of molecules and solids in close agreement with experiment, but to make reliable predictions in cases when a direct experiment is not possible (e.g. the Earth core). Secondly, it should be a valuable asset to established researchers in the areas of materials science, solid-state physics and chemistry due to very detailed explanations of a wide range of phenomena ranging from symmetry, lattice vibrations, electronic structure and superconductivity to magnetic and dielectric properties. Rigour and detail in explaining complicated mathematical techniques and in providing derivations when talking of various physical concepts are essential for those who would like to really understand things they have never had a chance to. Because of that and of the fact that the book contains a lot of material from different areas of solid-state physics retold from a single viewpoint, it should be indispensable for lecturers. Not only a number of courses, both general and specialised, should be possible to set up, but these courses may also be of a different level of difficulty ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate and then to highly advanced ones. This is because of a clear marking system adopted in the book. Hence, it should also be useful for advanced third- and fourth-year undergraduate students.Customer Reviews:

Solid Sample Analysis: Direct and Slurry Sampling using GF-AAS and ETV-ICP
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540624708 |
Book Description
The direct determination of elements in solid samples by atomspectrometric methods without prior digestion is in many cases more efficient and reliable, faster, easier, more cost-effective and less time-consuming than other methods. In this first book on the topic the authors describe concisely all instrumental and methodological features, including calibration, influences from the matrix or sample inhomogeneities, optimization, data analysis and measurement uncertainty. Special chapters deal with GF-AAS, slurry injection, ETV-ICP-AES/MS coupling. The authors' aim to deliver all their experience in a way that enables the spectroscopists to develop their own solid sampling based methods makes this book an unvaluable source for AAS- and AES-practitioners.

Band Theory of Solids: An Introduction from the Point of View of Symmetry
Simon L. Altmann Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 019855866X |
Book Description
The structure of much of solid-state theory comes directly from group theory, but until now there has been no elementary introduction to the band theory of solids which adopts this approach. This book provides such an introduction, employing only the simplest and most basic of group theoretical ideas, and emphasizing the significance of symmetry in determining many of the essential concepts used in the subject. Given the extensive training of chemists in applying group theory, there is no quicker entry into the subject than by means of the approach used in this book. Many topics were chosen with the needs of chemists in mind, and many of the examples have a chemical flavour. Numerous problems are included which enable the reader to apply the major ideas and to complete some parts of the treatment. Chemists will find this a valuable introduction to band theory, and the book will also appeal to all physical scientists who would like to go a little beyond the elementary treatments so far available.Books:
