I think when I bought the workbook I had a misconception that it was the actual textbook.

1 out of 5 stars Misrepresented item.......2006-11-06

The way the description read for this book was very misleading. I thought I was buying the actual textbook. I was very dissappointed when it arrived less than a week prior to my class starting and it was a review book. Live and learn - if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is!!

5 out of 5 stars thoughts about Human Biology: Concepts and Current Issues.......2006-03-23

This is a great book. It gives a perfect amount of information, not too much, but not too little. I love the pictures and the diagrams. I have the newest edition, 3rd. It's only about 5 pages more than the 2nd edition, so if you need to save money, you won't be missing out on much if you get the 2nd edition.

5 out of 5 stars All Of The Biology Of The Human Body.......2005-05-19

This wonderful book gives the reader a comprehensive presentation of the biology of the workings of the human body. The book comes with a CD ROM inside the cover and a free registration number for the tutor center which offers the learner internet and telephone support.

I used this text for my Biology class in college and I really liked it.
They make everything simple (sometimes too simple, I would expect more details in some chapters)
As a foreign student, this book was great for building my vocabulary.
I do recommend it, it's worth it

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars informative but creepy.......2007-03-19

At the moment my 5 year old daughter is fascinated with the workings of the body - she says she wants to be a surgeon! I got this for her, and it does contains lots of basic and informative information about human anatomy and the systems that run the body. My only complaint, and it is a pretty big one, is that the illustrations actually creep me out. My daughter does not voice this opinion, but she was reserved in her reaction to the book. The illustrations are supposed to look like a child has drawn them with crayon, but they are presented as drawings of the very same girl who narrates the book, but she is missing her face, or her face is part skull, etc. It just struck me as a bit jarring, and I'll be interested to look at other books for the same age group on this topic. Also, the reproductive system is conveniently skipped, which would be of enormous interest to the kids, but force the folks to have a longer bed time story!

4 out of 5 stars Four Year Old Minds.......2006-11-07

This is a great starting place to explain in 3D the connection between bones, muscles and blood. We were disappointed that it did not have the sex organs for both F and M.

5 out of 5 stars My Daughter (Age 3) Loves This Book.......2006-07-03

I never tire of reading this book with my daughter. Me and My Amazing Body has inspired many conversations about the human body and health. It is simple, educational and the illustrations are great.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably simple and complete........2003-01-28

This book is clear and simple. It covers everything without being complicated. It is easy for kids to understand without talking down to them. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Simply presented, medically correct, fun for preschoolers.......2002-09-23

A wonderfully illustrated explanation of how our bodies work, presented in kid-friendly language that is comprehensible and appealing to preschoolers. Simple yet medically correct discussion of internal organs, bones, the circulatory system, and more. A great book to help young children understand the complex and abstract functions that happen inside our skin, where we can't see them.

Book Description

This Basic Concepts title sheds light on the most elusive concepts in embryology and does so in a concise, lively manner. The level of detail is geared directly to that which is required by students in a way which esily accesses the most relevant information. The book utilizes jargon-free language and innovative teaching techniques to promote an understanding of concepts--not just the rote memorization of facts. To further enhance comprehension, text and illustrations accompany each other on the same or facing pages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear excellent overview of embryology.......2005-01-21

If you are looking for a clearly presented explanation of the concepts of embryology this book is an excellent choice. While embryology is a complex subject, many of the standard texts and treatises unnecessarily obscure the topic by using verbose and obtuse prose. The author uses direct and relatively straightforward text that makes it much easier to learn about this fascinating subject.

3 out of 5 stars Good for class Not for Boards.......2004-12-03

This book offers a very detailed explanation of embryology in an easy to read format. It breaks embryo out of the 1960s format that our medical school taught in, but it is too much information for the boards. Embryo is good for cardio and GI and this book would be a good reference but don't use it for boards. You would be better off with High Yield.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Concepts in Embryology: A Student's Survival Guide.......2000-02-27

This book is extremely helpful as a supplement to textbook readings. It definitely meets the objective of placing the primary concepts UP FRONT! Using this book, I was better able to focus my study, prepare for exams, and drastically improve my grade. I feel this book works best as a supplement, due to very recent advances in embryological study that are not included in this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great for kids.......2006-07-18

The Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great. It is the right amount of information and the right level for young readers. My first grader read 200 books last school year and it was nice to know she was learning about her world at the same time. She read this and other books from the series to my four year old who also retained much of the information.

5 out of 5 stars Hear Your Heart.......2005-12-02

This book has captivated my 4 1/2 year old son. (My 8 year old daughter likes it, too) My son actually stood up in preschool yesterday (he is normally quiet) and taught the class details of how the heart works and the parts of the heart. His teacher's were amazed that he was sharing something, so they let him teach. We have to read this book over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Can you hear your heart?.......2004-11-07

An introduction into how the heart works along with feeling your pulse and listening to a hearts beat with amusing illustrations reader can imitate and view diagrams of the heart.

My son frequently will tell me he can hear his heart once he rests after playing around. I figured he would enjoy exploring the activities among the last two pages in Hear Your Heart like How to Measure Your Heart Rate and How to Make a Stethoscope.

There are several kids, adults and babies illustrated among the thirty-three pages of Hear Your Heart in various settings as well as illustrations of the heart in pink, red and black colors. The areas are identified to which is a vein and artery with other illustrations showing arrows in how the heart actually beats.

Hear Your Heart begins with a girl at the Doctor's office showing a real stethoscope that is cold and making the girl shiver. She much prefers her homemade stethoscope made out of a cardboard tube. There are a few pages showing the girl and her sister listening to each other's heart and then other kids doing the same thing.

Hear Your Heart is easy to follow written in a way that kids can understand and comprehend based on the detailed illustrations. The style Hear Your Heart is written in offers all the answers that my child has along the way. This encourages my son to watch the second hand while he counts how many times his heart beats in one minute. There are times we learn like when exercising that the pace will be faster. Also noted is the ninety times a minute for an eight-year old. This is now a figure my son is striving to reach. A man's will be in the area of seventy-two while an infant is around one hundred twenty times a minute.

My son is much more aware of his heart and pulse rate and wants to check everyone that he comes in contact with, including his teddy bear. The activities enhance the book so it becomes more than just a reading tool but an overall learning experience. These books focus on the grades from one to three within the age group of six to nine.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love it!.......2003-11-30

This book has an experiment that worked. My 8-year-old daughter likes the book a lot. My 5-year-old son likes the book because the book teaches him how to hear his heart.

Did you know that your brain (yes, even yours) is roughly the size of a large grapefruit? Award-winning author Seymour Simon clearly and skillfully exposes the many wonders of the brain and nervous system in The Brain: Our Nervous System. Author of more than 150 children's books about science, including The Heart: Our Circulatory System, Muscles: Our Muscular System, and Bones: Our Skeletal System, Simon has a knack for piquing the curiosity of youngsters and clearly communicating scientific facts. The Brain, written for ages 8 and older, is a solid launching pad for further investigation of the organ that makes us who we are. Kids will love learning that our brains grow until we are 7 years old, that our spines have 33 vertebrae, and that our skulls are made of 28 bones. Large, full-color photographs and illustrations show the fascinating, if slightly nauseating, areas of the human brain--a positron computed tomography (PCT) photo, for example, shows the dramatically different levels of visual stimulation to the brain when your eyes are open or closed. Two to three paragraphs of large type per page, plus one full-bleed illustration per spread, help make The Brain just the right amount of information for one grapefruit-sized brain to take in. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

The brain is the control center for everything from memories to movement, eyesight to emotions. This incredible computer processes messages from billions of microscopic cells called neurons, which link up to form nerves. Covering every inch of the body, nerves can carry messages from your fingertip to your brain and back at speeds of up to four hundred feet per second. With stunning full-color photographs and a fascinating text, award-winning author Seymour Simon continues his fantastic journey through the human body.
