Book Description
Electronic design automation (EDA) is among the crown jewels of electrical engineering. Without EDA tools, today's complex integrated circuits (ICs) would be impossible. Doesn't such an important field deserve a comprehensive, in-depth, and authoritative reference? The Electronic Design Automation for Integrated Circuits Handbook is that reference, ranging from system design through physical implementation. Organized for convenient access, this handbook is available as a set of two carefully focused books dedicated to the front- and back-end aspects of EDA, respectively. What's included in the Handbook? EDA for IC System Design, Verification, and Testing This first installment examines logical design, focusing on system-level and micro-architectural design, verification, and testing. It begins with a general overview followed by application-specific tools and methods, specification and modeling languages, high-level synthesis approaches, power estimation methods, simulation techniques, and testing procedures. EDA for IC Implementation, Circuit Design, and Process Technology Devoted to physical design, this second book analyzes the classical RTL to GDS II design flow, analog and mixed-signal design, physical verification, analysis and extraction, and technology computer aided design (TCAD). It explores power analysis and optimization, equivalence checking, placement and routing, design closure, design for manufacturability, process simulation, and device modeling. Comprising the work of expert contributors guided by leaders in the field, the Electronic Design Automation for Integrated Circuits Handbook provides a foundation of knowledge based on fundamental concepts and current industrial applications. It is an ideal resource for designers and users of EDA tools as well as a detailed introduction for newcomers to the field.
Customer Reviews:
Great overview.......2007-03-20
Great overview of the IC design process from start to finish. It's been a while since I was a grunt in the trenches working on chip designs - the two volumes allowed me to see what's state of the art all in one place.
well rounded coverage.......2007-03-17
This is one of the best coverage on EDA topics I have come across. For people without an EDA background, this book gives a very good understanding of the complexities of the technologies and clearly illustrates the various challenges involved in designing EDA applications.
There are two things that would help supplement the excellent coverage:
1. the "Overview" section could be expanded (maybe as a "Epilogue" section) to cover "key algorithms, key innovations required and potential challenges for future".
2. An example of a reasonably generic "chip" with a mock run of some tool flows as well as the cycle times (to be fair to all EDA vendors, it would have to cover atleast a few popular flows). The focus for this section would be to help EDA users, future software designers and the IT architecture/infrastructure designers to better leverage the information in future optimization efforts.
The State of the Art as it Exists Today (2006).......2006-05-19
I suppose that anyone even thinking about this book realizes that without ways to automate the design today's ever more sophisticated and ever larger chips simply wouldn't exist. There would be no way to manually keep track of the billions of connections required. There would be no laptops, cell phones, digital cameras or any of the other neat little electronic gadgets that we have today.
As is often the case with books that are describing the current state of the art, this book is a collaboration written by a wide range of people in the industry. These people come from a wide variety of organizations including academic, equipment suppliers, semiconductor companies and more. They are located all across the world. The editors are of course from California (where else?).
Volume One covers architecture, design, verification and testing. Volume Two covers RTL to GDS-II, analog and mixed-signal design, physical verification, and technology CAD.
These books represent the state of the art as it existed in 2005 and Early 2006. These are the techniques in use today and are the base for future developments.

Embedded Systems.......2005-09-17
So Far I have been using it alot to figure out how to program the assembly for a pic, very useful
It is not ment to be a "PIC for dummies" Book.......2005-02-02
I took Dr. Peatman's class in college with this book, and I think this book would have done better if he had bundled the Class Lab book. The class lab book and actually having the hardware in front of you made the book make a whole lot more sense. I can see how some of the other readers may have been disappointed because with out the hardware in front of you its a bit difficult to really understand whats going on. I think this book is great as a reference if you have a PIC controller to play around with, but I would not recommend this book to some one who is looking for a "PIC microprocessors for Dummies" type book.
Not Much Bang for the Buck!.......2002-09-06
This book is basically an over-priced college text. ... On the other hand, there are a few good practical applications illustrated. The author choose to place a special emphasis on timing issues.
not for beginners.......2002-06-26
This might be a suitable reference for someone who is already intimately familiar with PIC microcontrollers but it way too advanced for beginners. From the first page the author assumes you already know alot about microprocessors including the lingo.
The writing style is just dreadful, with sentences that run on and on in a prose that would leave Yoda confused. This is not a fun read about what should be a fun subject.
Beginners will find the book too obtuse and advanced users need nothing more than the device datasheets so the book is pointless.
has its use.......2001-09-27
This was the first book I used when starting out with PICs. I found that it was not the smoothest reading book out there, but it got me up and running. The first program in the book to make an LED blink on and off looks like the source code to a 3D modeling program, that aside I found myself thumbing through this book constantly to learn how to use the onboard periferals of a mid range PIC. I give it a fair rating for learning and a good rating for reference.

Book Description
Systematic Design of Sigma-Delta Analog-to-Digital Converters describes the issues related to the sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) design in a systematic manner: from the top level of abstraction represented by the filters defining signal and noise transfer functions (STF, NTF), passing through the architecture level where topology-related performance is calculated and simulated, and finally down to parameters of circuit elements like resistors, capacitors, and amplifier transconductances used in individual integrators. The systematic approach allows the evaluation of different loop filters (order, aggressiveness, discrete-time or continuous-time implementation) with quantizers varying in resolution. Topologies explored range from simple single loops to multiple cascaded loops with complex structures including more feedbacks and feedforwards. For differential circuits, with switched-capacitor integrators for discrete-time (DT) loop filters and active-RC for continuous-time (CT) ones, the passive integrator components are calculated and the power consumption is estimated, based on top-level requirements like harmonic distortion and noise budget.
This unified, systematic approach to choosing the best sigma-delta ADC implementation for a given design target yields an interesting solution for a high-resolution, broadband (DSL-like) ADC operated at low oversampling ratio, which is detailed down to transistor-level schematics.
The target audience of
Systematic Design of Sigma-Delta Analog-to-Digital Converters are engineers designing sigma-delta ADCs and/or switched-capacitor and continuous-time filters, both beginners and experienced. It is also intended for students/academics involved in sigma-delta and analog CAD research.

Book Description
This monograph addresses the problem of device layout for high-performance custom analog cells. In particular, an alternative placement and routing formulation is proposed that is designed to minimize the cost in layout quality that is traditionally associated with analog layout automation.
The goal of analog layout is to minimize the effects of layout induced performance degradation while, at the same time, to maximize the area utilization of the circuit. Human layout experts observe a variety of analog-specific layout constraints and exploit a range of
geometric
optimizations to achieve these performance and density goals. This work is directed at discovering how these constraints and optimizations can best be incorporated into automatic layout optimization.
Two of the products of this research are a new analog device-level placer, KOAN, and a new analog device-level router, ANAGRAM II [40], which incorporate a more comprehensive set of layout constraints and geometric optimizations than in any previous systems.
Analog
Device-Level Layout Automation focuses on the formulation, algorithms, and certain relevant implementation details of KOAN and ANAGRAM II.

Customer Reviews:
Not for undergraduate.......2007-04-09
As its title suggested, this book gives lots of explanation to terms commonly used in computer Architecture. It is a step-by-step guide to CPU design in one respect and a dictionary in another respect. It can be a reference/checklist for practitioners but I will not recommend this book for learning. There are far better self-contained books on CPU architecture/design in the market:
(1) Computer Organization by Carl Hamacher, Z. Vranesic & S Zaky.
(2) Computer Organization and Design by David Patterson & John Hennessy.
I give this book only one star for the following reasons:
(1) The book is overpriced. USD100 for a small dictionary/checklist? This may be OK for a practitioner but certainly not for college graduates.
(2) The book layout and diagrams are not professional. Look at the two books I recommend and you know what is mean by professional editing and sincere writing.
(3) The physical dimension of the book is not right. Basically, the paper size should be bigger. It seems that Springer (the Publisher) like to print 9.3 x 6 inches books. That is why you will see many texts and graphics (in this book) are so small that you can hardly read.
A treasure trove of ideas and tricks.......2006-05-11
The books gives insightful ideas and tricks for CPU design. The ideas span from architecture to logical and physical (layout) synthesis, and they come from real, practical implementations. The book also connects the dots by its scope. The faq and anwers are presented in a nice interesting tabular fashion. Great book.
Excellent Book.......2005-02-12
I used to work with this author at Sun. When I was in a book store, I saw this book and bought it. I went through some of the chapters in this book and its really an excellent one. Must have book if you are in this field.

Introduction to Algorithms
ASIN: 0792395921 |
Book Description
Algorithms for VLSI Physical Design Automation, Second Edition is a core reference text for graduate students and CAD professionals. Based on the very successful First Edition, it provides a comprehensive treatment of the principles and algorithms of VLSI physical design, presenting the concepts and algorithms in an intuitive manner. Each chapter contains 3-4 algorithms that are discussed in detail. Additional algorithms are presented in a somewhat shorter format. References to advanced algorithms are presented at the end of each chapter.
Algorithms for VLSI Physical Design Automation covers all aspects of physical design. In 1992, when the First Edition was published, the largest available microprocessor had one million transistors and was fabricated using three metal layers. Now we process with six metal layers, fabricating 15 million transistors on a chip. Designs are moving to the 500-700 MHz frequency goal. These stunning developments have significantly altered the VLSI field: over-the-cell routing and early floorplanning have come to occupy a central place in the physical design flow.
This Second Edition introduces a
realistic picture to the reader, exposing the concerns facing the VLSI industry, while maintaining the theoretical flavor of the First Edition. New material has been added to all chapters, new sections have been added to most chapters, and a few chapters have been completely rewritten. The textual material is supplemented and clarified by many helpful figures.
Audience: An invaluable reference for professionals in layout, design automation and physical design.
Customer Reviews:
This book will confuse you.......2004-10-23
This book is good at introducing basic concepts, if this is what
you want to know. But it is really bad to introduce algorithm.
It simply confuse you. Many time I don't know what the author
is talking about and have to find the original paper, which is
much clear.
Algorithms for Vlsi Physical Design Automation.......2002-05-15
I read the Chapter on clock routing and found that the
author did not do a good job on explaining about DME
algorithm. I got more confused after reading it. So,
I went to the library and checked the references
which gave me clear understanding. Usually, a book
shoud give a reader with a very clear example about
the algorithm it presents. It's was not the case for
the DME algorithm.
Algorithms for Vlsi Physical Design Automation.......2002-01-06
I found this book very helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of what the tools I use are doing. Also, the terminology that is used and explained allows me to easier communication with the CAD developers. I found the information relating to clock skew and jitter of particular value to my daily work.
Suitable for CS people.......1999-07-21
Very comprehensive in VLSI physical design automation. People who major in Computer Science and want to study in VLSI is suitable to buy this book. Also people who want to develop EDA tools can buy the book.
