Don Eagan - Graduate Student.......2007-01-27
I bought this book as a required text for one of my on-line classes. I am in my second graduate class which is about quantitative and qualitative research and I am very impressed with the quality of this text. If you are a researcher, this book is a must have. If you are a reader of research, this book is also a must have. It is very well written and provides numerous examples of how to properly organize and write effective quantitative and qualitative research papers.
Helpful resource.......2007-01-10
I am in the process of completing my exit project for my Master's degree. This text has been an excellent guide for me as I am completing my degree through distance education. I purchased the text at the end of my degree, after my coursework was completed, however, I think it would have been a great help for me if I had it from the beginning. I'm sure it's on the "recommended reading" list for most graduate courses, but I feel it should be "required reading" for anyone who is engaged in formal, academic research.
Comprehensive, Interest-Provoking, Understandable.......2007-01-06
As a grad student returning to the classroom after more than 25 years I was a bit reticent about taking up the subject of academic research. The excellence of this text informed me, gave me a comprehensive view of the subject matter and left me wanting to learn more. I highly recommend it. This is one of the text books I will keep for future reference.

Easy to follow guide to modern experimental psychology.......1997-12-08
Smith and Davis present a concise discussion of the major facets to research in the field of Psychology. It guides the readers through all stages of the experimental design, from conception through implementation and interpretation. The authors succeed where others fail in conveying their ideas in an untechnical yet methodologically sound manner. It is a more than adequate preparation for undergraduate psychology students.

"The most significant challenge today in social and behavioral research is how to combine qualitative and quantitative thinking in a way that helps us provide relevant insights and solve problems. This book takes an important step toward addressing this challenge."
âCarol A. Chapelle, Iowa State University
Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research, spearheaded by John Creswell--the author of the best-selling Research Design (now in its
Second Edition), combines the latest thinking about mixed methods research designs with practical, step-by-step guidelines for the decisions that must be made in designing a mixed methods research study. "Mixed methods research" is defined as a procedure for collecting, analyzing, and mixing both quantitative and qualitative data in a single case study or series of studies and is becoming more common in studies across the social, behavioral, and health sciences as well as education.
The book offers advice tailored to negotiating the demands and issues that arise when designing a mixed methods project. The recommendations offered focus on how to keep the project manageable for the beginning researcher while still ensuring quality research.
Key Features:
- Offers a practical, how-to guide for designing a mixed methods study
- Presents examples from actual, published mixed methods studies drawn across the social, behavioral, health, and education disciplines
- Incorporates activities and exercises for classroom use or for use by the researcher in preparing designs
- Contains a full glossary of terms for quick reference or as a study tool Illustrates designs using visual diagrams and flowcharts
- Goes through the entire research process (formulating questions, designing, collecting, interpreting, etc.) using four major types of mixed methods designs
While much has been written about mixed methods from a conceptual and theoretical approach, this is the first book to deliver practical guidance about how to design a mixed method study.

Research and Methodology with a Little Kick.......2000-04-02
Brett Pelham does a phenomenal job of bringing excitement and life to a subject matter many students and psychologists deem boring-research and research methodology. In his easy-to-read book, Brett brings comedy to confounding variables, t-scores, and placebo effects. Throughout the book, he backs up his explanation of research terms by using clear, but witty illustrations. Brett was my professor at UCLA and he used this book for his Psychology Research and Methodology course. A class I had been dreading was made alive, interesting, and easy to understand, not only through his lectures, but through this book! If you are a psychology teacher, a student struggling to fully grasp reasearch methods, or just a person who enjoys reading well written, easy to read books, with a comedic kick, then this is a great book for you! It will not only change the way you view methodology/research, but heighten your understanding of the topic.

Book Description
The Ethnographer's Toolkit series begins with this overview volume, which defines the qualitative research enterprise, links research strategies to theoretical paradigms, and outlines the ways in which an ethnographic study can be designed. Using practical, straightforward language, the authors of this volume introduce readers to the research process, identifying issues, choices, and techniques covered in greater depth in other kit volumes, including chapters on the personal qualities of a good researcher and on research ethics. As a guide to the contents of the Toolkit series, or as a stand-alone introduction to the qualitative enterprise, this volume will be extremely valuable to novice researchers.

To The Point Skills Teaching.......2000-12-13
This text provides an excellent overview of the processes and considerations in good ethnographic research. Chapter 1 provides a discussion that introduces the reader to the term ethnography. Those who assume that they already know about ethnography may also want to peruse this chapter for a refreshing and concise review of rationale and terminology. The next chapter describes processes for determining when ethnography should be used. This discussion is especially useful for those in various fields and professions that have recently come to recognize the value of ethnographic methods in their endeavors. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 aid the ethnographer in the pre-fieldwork stage. In chapter 3, clear descriptions of different theoretical paradigms for research (such as "Critical Theory" (pp. 45-48)) are offered so that the reader may have the creative benefit of exploring questions raised by different paradigms. Chapter 4 guides the reader through the conceptual process of creating a research design, and chapter 5 explains how to apply research designs to specific projects in order to generate good ethnographic data. Methods of ethnographic data collection are described in chapter 6, and chapter 7 explores the analysis of this data. Chapter 8 provides a discussion of the types of personalities and relationships that encourage better fieldwork experiences and potential data collection. And chapter 9 describes ethical considerations that are important to note - including Institutional Review Board guidelines. These individuals should be congratulated for bringing such a valuable resource to those interested in using ethnography. Designing and Conducting Ethnographic Research is just the first in a seven volume series that guides the reader through the various stages of ethnographic research - from the conceptual beginnings to the actual implementation of ethnographic findings. Each of these texts is a valuable source - focusing on specific processes and techniques in ethnographic research. For the convenience of those using the whole series, the editors have cross-referenced several issues, topics, and examples in each book with similar discussions appearing in the other books. The editors have also developed a helpful system of symbols, appearing in the margins throughout each book, to flag the reader to key points, cross references, definitions, and case studies. These help to make the facts and examples offered more readily accessible to the reader. The entire series is well written, in clear and concise language, without the presence of heavy anthropological jargon. And when jargon is presented, it is helpfully defined in the margin. Thus, this series is very useful to anyone interested in ethnography, and for individuals at all levels of ethnographic expertise.
Book Description
The field of cost-effectiveness analysis has lacked an entry-level textbook until now. Designing and Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analyses in Medicine and Health Care is a hands-on guide for conducting economic analyses that closely follows the recommendations of the Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine. Step by step, Dr. Muennig outlines the theory and practice of cost-effectiveness and shows how to develop an original research question, retrieve data, design a decision analysis tree, calculate quality-adjusted life years, and test for error in analysis. The book provides clear and detailed instruction and includes a review of the epidemiological and biostatistical skills students need to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses. While the book is designed for students, it includes advanced topics for policymakers, community health experts, and preventive medicine residents who are interested in the field. The book uses a worked example to walk the reader through the process of designing and conducting an analysis and provides links to all of the major Internet-accessible sources of government data. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of students and seasoned researchers alike.
Customer Reviews:
good guided tour of cost-effectiveness analyses.......2002-03-25
This book was really well-written in that everything was laid out clearly and consistently. I could basically choose my level of involvement, since the author explicitly delineates what each chapter and each exercise is for. The book was especially helpful in helping me choose which statistical methods of analysis would best fit the data set and research question I was working on; no other books I looked up did this in a readable way. Also, what really impressed me is the fact that the book made all the exercises not only seem, but actually feel, easy (or at least logical), and it wasn't until the end that I realized that I had built a decent foundation in cost-effectiveness analysis. The lessons were cumulative, so that the process of doing the problem sets actually felt fulfilling.

Customer Reviews:
Everything you always wanted to know about clinical research but were afraid to ask.......2006-10-22
This readable, lively text provides an essential road map through the slough of despond for anyone who conducts or has contemplated conducting clinical research. Pitfalls, quicksand, torrents and deserts await the unprepared traveller into such hostile country, and Dr. Stone's guidebook provides up to date, detailed and useful instructions on how to avoid them all. The author speaks with the voice of long and sometimes daunting experience, yet her tone is unceasingly encouraging, engaging and inspiring. With corporations dictating the national medical research agenda, inside and outside academic medical centers, the ground rules for a productive research career have changed. Research is now open to anyone who sees patients, and no longer requires the ability to design complex studies and interpret statistical data. Instead, it demands understanding of legal and market forces, methods for to negotiating, organizing and maintaining a team based enterprise, and a large dose of humility and good humor. All of these Dr. Stone offers, along with such critical tools as forms to be used for different types of studies, references to books and internet resources, guidelines to assure that research is conducted ethically, and information on where to get further training and help. Any health professional who has ever wanted to join the research enterprise will find something useful in this book, and those already on board will be carried forward to new heights of productivity and reward.
Conducting Clinical Research.......2006-10-12
Dr. Judy Stone provides an excellent informative guide to clinical
research in her new book, Conducting Clinical Research: A Practical Guide for Physicians, Nurses, Study Coordinators, and Investigators. She
captures the attention of the reader through her delightful writing style and validates essential research elements through her immense research
experience. Dr. Stone's book provides an educational foundation for the
novice researcher and is a necessary reference for all clinical research
personnel. Conducting Clinical Research: A Practical Guide for Physicians, Nurses, Study Coordinators, and Investigators should be a "must read" for all study coordinators, research nurses, and investigators. Dr. Judy Stone exemplifies learning from the clinical trials expert.
Clinical Investigation Made Easy.......2006-10-11
" A fascinating journey through the difficult maze of clinical research.
Dr. Stone, whimsically, shares her "View From The Trenches" which makes
this several steps beyond your usual "how to "experience. The book is well written and should be a must for anyone involved in clinical research."
Splendid, Lucid Manual for Learning How to Do Clinical Research.......2006-10-10
Judy Stone's "Conducting Clinical Research: A Practical Guide for Physicians, Nurses, Study Coordinators, and Investigators" should be required reading for anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of clinical trials research, from physicians and other investigators to data managers and analysts and last, but not least, both medical students and students of epidemiology and biostatistics who intend upon embarking in careers in clinical trials research. Dr. Stone does an impressive job covering the philosophical, legal and research-oriented aspects of clinical trials research, without making this job seem too dry or inaccessible for the novice researcher - for which this book is primarily intended - as well as those with extensive familiarity with clinical trials research. I, for one, wish I had this book years ago when I was working as a data manager for a clinical trials study conducted by researchers from Columbia University's Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology. But now I have a copy - which was graciously provided to me by the author for the purpose of writing this review - and it will be an important reference that I shall use when I am again working as a data manager for a clinical trials research study; it is a reference I am certain that others interested in clinical trials research shall find most useful too.
Stone begins her book with an extensive introduction to clinical trials research, explaining why and how it is done, and describes how to choose a suitable site (or sites) for a potential clinical trial. Next she devotes several chapters to covering the legal and other regulatory issues related to clinical trials research, which, I might add, is done with ample doses of humor. Chapters 5 and 6 cover daily aspects of an ongoing clinical trial, covering both practical considerations with respect to issues such as obtaining medical supplies to those related to keeping in contact with those patients who've enrolled in the trial. Chapter 7 may be the most important chapter, since it discusses extensively the ethical issues pertaining to clinical trials research, noting how these issues have influenced the establishment of international and American legal documents, especially in light of the crimes committed against humanity by Nazi scientists and doctors conducting unethical medical experiments on unwilling patients during World War II (Left unmentioned by Dr. Stone are the war crimes committed by Japanese scientists and doctors against unwilling East Asian prisoners and American prisoners of war during World War II; but these, no doubt, also influenced the establishment of rigorous international and American codes governing the use of human subjects in medical research.). Although the book contains two final chapters devoted to politics in research and opportunities for graduate and other types of study pertaining to clinical research; more than half of the book is composed of appendices pertaining to every aspect of clinical trials research and opportunities for further study (Much to my surprise, one notable omission is Columbia University's Department of Epidemiology, whose faculty include notable researchers interested in the teaching of sound clinical trials research.).
A much needed resource!.......2006-10-09
Written from the heart, with compassion and experience, Stone focuses on the basic principles of conducting clinical research with an engaging and entertaining approach.

An encyclopedic work to meet the needs of survey designers........2000-01-27
I had taken on a consultation project in which the task was to develop a climate survey for use within a public school system. I painstakingly reviewed various research journals and books pertaining to the subject matter of survey design. The information gathered from these sources was helpful, but not adequate. Fortunately, I discovered the book "Designing and Conducting Survey Research: A Comprehensive Guide" in a library. This book provided me with information that was not only invaluable in my efforts to develop an actual survey instrument, but additionally guided my efforts in designing focus groups to validate my instrument. This publication assisted me with focusing my design efforts. The various appendices provide exceptional reference material. I was so impressed with the information that it provided me, I purchased the text to have as a readily available resource for my future survey endeavors. To all who are embarking on their first survey design journey, or to those of you who are seasoned veterans, do yourself justice and explore this publication.
