Wonderful gift for first time parents!.......2007-08-31

I received this book from a good friend when my baby boy was born (our first). I thought the poetry of birth and the natural world was amazing. And the ending where a circle of loved ones welcomed the new baby whispering "We're so glad you've come," reminded me of all the love our family and friends showed our new baby. I can't read it without tearing up. It's a wonderful reminder that all life is sacred and beautiful.
While the art is tribal, not fluffy, and some of the language is advanced for a developing child, I still love this book. Not every board book should be pastels and one syllable words. But I hope this book will be a keepsake that we can read together and remember what a miracle it was that he was born. I want to foster in him the spirit of this book... that all life is connected and we need to try to live in balance with the environment that sustains our lives.

This is a wonderful book to give to any new child or to the grandparent of a new child. I was given one for our new grandson and immediately bought three to give as gifts. The book is something that can become a family tradition to be read on each child's birthday!

Book is AMAZING, CD is so-so.......2007-05-15

I bought this for my son before he was born, and I read it to him all the time - and never with a dry eye! I always buy it as a baby gift for anyone I know who's having a baby of their own. However, unless you find this set for a good price, I might just get the book. My husband calls the CD "hippie music" and he's right - the music is a little, um, groovy and repetitive. Though if you have a sappy friend, get it - books like this and the Giving Tree always make me cry, and if I can have the CD finish the story for me when I get choked up, so much the better.

I really enjoyed these books. They were an enjoyable sampling of a few extra aspects of the Harry Potter universe. J.K. did a good job with fleshing out the history of quidditch and the variety of magical creatures that get mentioned throughout the HP series.

A must read for Harry Potter fans. Quidditch Through the Ages is written to appear like a book that is actually been checked out from the Hogwarts Library while Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is an actual textbook used by Harry and Ron. The markings written by Harry and Ron in the book are priceless.

It is an amusing set of books. If you have all seven books, you will also like this set. I didn't realize that Rowling had written this set around book five. The money from the sales goes to charity and the odd facts are interesting. She is creative in her description of the different beasts in the first book and the history of quidditch in the second book. The other games that predate quidditch are amusing.

Beaucoup board game beasties.

A silly kid's adventure after a game that is brought home gets a bit more real than virtual, and it isn't even your computer game Tron type deal. A basic board game as magical artifact and transport to adventure and danger, etc. Not really that interesting, but bearable enough for that sort of thing.

Jumanji is a great book! I am 23 years old now and I still remember the day my 2nd grade teacher read Jumanji to my class. I was hanging on her every word and the illustrations were absolutley amazing. This was in the year 1987 and up to that point I had never seen pictures so vividly and immaculately rendered. Jumanji was unlike any other book that I had read because it was fun, exciting, adventurous, and also eerie which added to the intrigue. I was very disappointed by the movie interpretation of it, because it's nothing like the real thing.

oh man you won't believe this book! I find it in the store and right away I see that there are so many monkeys! I read this book one time and then I put it in the shelf, and then oh man you know I have to read it again! This book has rhinos in it and sometimes a man. You want to know the ending but it is a surprise. BUY IT FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien is commonly referred as a classic. While this is an often over-used term, it definitely applies in this case. Of the four books Tolkien is known for primarily, "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", "The Return of the King" and "The Hobbit", this is the most satisfying. I t introduces and sets up key characters for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy consisting of the three books previously named.

In Tolkien's Middle-Earth, the principle races are men, elves and dwarves. There also goblins (orcs), giants dragons, wizards and assorted odd characters and fantastic beasts. Then there are hobbits who have as little to do with the rest of Middle-Earth as possible.

They like it that way.

Hobbits are interested in green growing things, eating and smoking pipe weed. When they aren't being industrious, they enjoy their comforts. They are very short in stature and move through the woods efficiently and silently. This isn't so they can sneak up on someone so much as it is to stay out of adventures.

Of these conservative, predictable folk, there is one Bilbo Baggins. The Bagginses are prosperous and respectable as hobbits go. Which means Bilbo is perfectly happy leading his boring comfortable life. The only mild eccentricity noted in Bilbo's line is he's related to the Tooks through his mother. Tooks had been known to get into little adventures from time to time and as such were of questionable respectability.

Central to this connection is Gandalf the Grey, a wizard. For some reason he has developed a curiosity and a fondness for these little people. Maybe it`s because in his adventure-filled life, it's nice to have a little peace and quiet. Gandalf is also renowned for his fireworks of which everyone enjoys.

One day the family friend shows up on Bilbo's doorstep. Shortly after this, Bilbo finds himself hosting not just Gandalf but also twelve dwarves lead by Thorin Oakenshield. Not long after this, Bilbo finds himself `assigned' to this motley crew as a "Burglar". They are on a quest to recover Thorin's lost fortune.

This is when the book really begins. This is a journey tale. That means Bilbo goes through transformation in the process of this quest. Relationships are developed and tested in a way none can predict. This being a fantasy they see and do fantastic things.

Eventually Bilbo returns home no longer respectable. Along the way he has picked up a ring...........

Tolkien at his best!.......2007-10-09

As the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit or There and Back Again, is a magnificent tale of magic, fantasy, and adventure. I found that I could not set this book down. With each page, I was that much more drawn into the realm of Middle Earth, and I made myself put the book down for a little bit in order to enjoy it.

The characterization in this book is phenomenal. Both the protagonists and antagonists throughout the novel help creat the landscape of the book, as well as set the foundation for Middle Earth. Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, displays the ideal character in that he is forced into a world of adventure of magic. As an innocent creature unaware of the outside world, Bilbo matures throughout the book, and is a classic example of a character who, by the end of the book, has developed into a great intellectual character. Bilbo continues to display this intellect throughout the Lord of the Rings.

I have experienced many a conflict with other readers who did not enjoy the Hobbit, and I'm not saying that this book is in everyone's favor, but any reader of fantasy, magic, and adventure will love this book. I recommend the Hobbit to every person no matter what age. As a timeless tale of Tolkien, I give this book five stars (although, it probably deserves more).

This book was boasting with the great imagination of J.R.R Tolkein. About 60 years before the lord of the seires Bilbo Gandlaf and a gang of Dwarfs travel through the misty moantians to get to a treasure stolen from the Dwarfs. As the gang travels through the land they meet tons of epic characters (elfs dwarfs goblins trolls). Tolkein could have written more voilence like its sequel Lord of the Rings. Overall it was a epic classic.

I generally do not read books if there is a possibility of a movie being made on the same. However, this is a really very interesting book. You can not keep it down once you start reading.

Tolkien Set the Stage.......2007-10-02

Though I grew up reading fantasy, playing Lone Wolf books and sometimes joining an AD&D game, I had never read any of Tolkien's works until recently. The Hobbit sat on my bookshelf for seven years because I couldn't get past the first chapter. Now I breezed through it, soaking in the rich world of Tolkien's imagination and discovering where most modern fantasy has its roots. Though I've seen the first two Lord of the Rings movies, I'm now going to get and read those books and anything else JRR Tolkien wrote in the way of fantasy.

Great Set of Books.......2007-08-15

I wanted to have the hard copies of these books to pass on to my kids and this is an excellent collection.

Worth reading, overall,.......2006-07-03

I read these books when I was about nine or ten. And I was totally, utterly, and completely in love.

And then I reread them now as twelve year old, and they have degraded. The plot and the characters are ultimately lovable, though it becomes a bit too repetitive in the fifth and sixth book. But I'm actually quite proud of how the characters have developed from the first one; they are 3D, dimensional, lovable, and almost believable. (though I find Draco Malfoy is just too...cliche-bad-boy-unbelievable)

It's mostly J.K. Rowling's writing style. I like fresh, appealing descriptions, not so much the "and there was a chair in the room and a small boy and another boy and..." (Okay, I just made that sentence up. But still. I find that to sorta be her style... lists and not descriptions.)

Still, if not just for the characters - I'd read it.

WOW- I absolutly FELL IN LOVE with these books, and all because of how good the first one was. Some people may say that if you read the first couple of pages of a book, and it doesn't really "light your fire" then don't bother with the rest. I BEG to differ! The first chapter of Harry Potter #1 might make little sense to one, until you have read farther along into it. I know I didn't really "get it" at first, but I kept reading. So don't listen to those people who say don't bother!
Because this is one of the best series of books ever written. Right up there with "The Hobbit"- that's something big. And for those who are worried about their children learning bad lessons from Harry, about sneaking around, keeping secrets, witchcraft?!?!, ; people, just relax. Don't over anyalse it, (it's a BOOK! not some devil worshipping cult, I still can't get over how some people are so prejeduced against it and won't even read it because they think it will "corrupt their children" and think that Harry Potter will lead them down the not-so-primrosed path. Qualities of loyalty, honour, love, friendship, and good against evil are very prominent, and clear to see in these books.
I think everyone will enjoy these books entirely! They're not just children's books, they're books that everyone can read and benefit from.
If I could rate this book ( and it's series ) as 10 stars, I would!

cant help but to give two thumbs up...it's nice to read a story about a mother's love, great friendship, story with a twist and humor and most especially with a plot and setting that definitely would take your imaginations to the highest level in one package...so hold on to your seats and be ready for the stories that this extraordinaire would leave you spellbound!!!

It's Harry Potter, what can I say? It's the series that got kids reading again. Everyone knows the plot. A boy wizard named Harry grew up with his cruel muggle (non-magic) aunt and uncle after his parents were killed in a car crash. At the age of 11 he's informed that he's a wizard, and that an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort murdered his parents and very nearly killed him. His aunt and uncle dissaproved of the world of magic and tried to keep everything a secret from Harry. He's taken away to live at a castle called Hogwarts, a school for young witches and wizards where he befriends the studious, proper Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasly, a poor boy who lives in the shadow of his brothers Charlie, Percy, Bill, and Fred and George. In book 1, Harry arrives at Hogwarts and finds that someone there is secretly trying to destroy him and is hiding a VERY big secret from the rest of the school.

In book 2, an unknown assailant is attacking students and everyone thinks Harry's doing it. We learn that no less than THREE characters are not what they seem. We are also introduced to Ron's younger sister Ginny, who has a crush on Harry.

In book 3, a murderous madman is on the loose and seems to be coming after Harry. But who, exactly is he? And the very LAST character you'd ever suspect of being evil reveals his true self.

In book 4, Harry is enrolled in the Triwizard Tournament, where three different magical schools select students to compete in daring, dangerous tests of school. Harry also attends the Quidditch world cup with the Weasleys and has a frightening run in with Voldemort and his servant in a graveyard. One character is tragically killed (I actually cried) at Voldemort's hand.

Book 4 is probably my favorite, along with 1, but there's really no such thing as a bad Harry Potter book. The movies are fantastic as well, and the sixth book is due out in a few months.

I can now say that I am a lucky man. I got to meet one of my heroes in San Diego a few weeks back. His name is Tony DiTerlizzi, and as far as I'm concerned, he's one of the most talented illustrators alive. Not since Brian Froud's classic FAERIES book has such a magnificent collection of fairytale art been bound together. Tony's style has a very classic/retro feel, that is also somehow modern at the same time. The palette is perfect, and the takes on these classic faeries are fresh. It is simply a gorgeous book worthy of being enjoyed time and time again.

I had a blast looking through each page, pausing to drink in each pencil sketch, and all the wonderfully painted renderings alike. There is no throwaway art in this book -- none at all!

The imagination of everyday items like needles, thimbles, and scissors becoming proud objects of the fairies that stole them is masterfully done. I am proud to say that Tony has signed my copy -- and maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to own an original piece of art from the book.

A Rare Find.......2007-09-03

Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You is a truly unique find. I stumbled across the novels at a friends house and thought the ink drawings were fun and playful, but the field guide itself is quite striking. The illustraions alone would have sold me, i love the little quick sketches and diagrams, plus the old-time travel log look is really appealing. All of the "little-known-facts", author's musings/notes, and narratives make this a rare find for any fantasy lover.

I love this book! I can look through it over and over again and never get tired of the beautiful illustrations. This illustrated book ties into the Spiderwick Chronicles books. It is the actual field guide that they talk about in this series that all of the fantasy creatures are trying to get ahold of. It is not supposed to be in human hands. No telling what the humans would do if they knew their secrets!

We read the Spiderwick Chronicles series and wanted more. So, when we found there was a Field Guide available we jumped at it. My kids have studied the characters in the book and have gone on faerie hunts in the yard and elsewhere. Fun! I'd recommend it for all 7-10 year-olds who are seriously interested in all things faerie.

My 5th grade son came home from school and insisted we buy this book. The reading teacher at his school had brought the book in to his classroom and they all went wild for it. It is very imaginative with wonderful illustrations of mythical creatures and is categorized in six different areas of fantastical creatures ("Around the house and yard" i.e. brownies, boggarts, changelings, pixies, etc. "In Fields and Forests" - cockatrices, elves leprechauns, manticores, sprites, treefolk, etc. "In Lakes and Streams" - kelpies, merfolk, nixies, sea serpents, trolls etc. "In The Hills and Mountains" - dwarves, giants, goblins, knockers, ogres, etc. "In The Sky" - dragons, griffins and phoenixes and "Outside At Night" - banshees, gargoyles, phookas, and will-o-the wisps among many many others. It is beautifully illustrated and has lots of information on the fictional (or is he?) Arthur Spiderwick's adventurous travels. My 2nd grade daughter really enjoys looking at the pictures although the text is too hard for her. This is a great book for older children, especially children like my son that are reluctant readers. Its the kind of book they pick up over and over. Because my children enjoyed this so much, we recently bought Spiderwick's The Care and Feeding of Sprites which is great but doesn't compare with the Fantastical World Around You (which covers many different species of mythical creatures with detailed descriptions and information on each). Great Science Project for Little Learners.......2007-09-03

If you are looking for a simple "experiment" for the budding scientist in your home, this is an excellent book. As you read this with your young child, he/ she will certainly be inspired to do what the kids in the book are doing; planting a bean seed and watching it grow.

As you read along with the story and follow-up with actually doing the experiment your child becomes part of the story, waiting and watching as his (or her) own seeds develop. Children learn the essential elements of growing seeds. Once you have successfully grown your first bean plants, there is a page at the rear of the book that guides you through additional "experiment" ideas to go even deeper.

This book, because it is on the Stage 1 level, is a bit less informative than the other Let's Read and Find Out Science books that we already have in our growing collection which are primarily Stage 2, but certainly worthwhile in that it guides parent and child through a very simple Science project.

Basic concepts covered in this book in addition to the seed growing are:

1. Counting (stage 1 is geered toward preschool to early kindergarten)
2. Patience (in that you must wait days to see things begin to happen)
3. The ability to follow instructions (the steps to perform the experiments)

We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school.

The books in this series are informative and interesting for their target audiences. The illustrations are well done and add to understanding the process being described. They make it easier to follow for kids.

Life Springing Forth........2002-03-28

This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

A Kids First Science Book.......2000-04-13

This is one very good science book. If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with your project. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high school science textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving every detail that there is. So what I'm trying to say is that this is a good book.

This book is a blast (no pun intended)! Mrs. Frizzle and her class travel to every planet in the solar system. The bus breaks down in the asteroid belt and the students have to find Mrs. Frizzle on a very cold planet. You'll love all the colorful pictures and Arnold's crazy cousin! I like this book because it has to deal with the solar system and i like to learn about space. It does a very good job teaching you about it, and the book was really fun to read. I like how the bus turnes into a space ship and goes to all the planets.

Have you ever had the math curse? Well, in the book Math Curse, a young boy gets put under the math curse. It all started when his teacher said, "You know, you can think of almost everything as a math problem." That got his mind turning. After that, EVERYTHING was a math problem to him. This little boy had a creative mind. 24 cupcakes, 25 students, 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months hmm... Will this curse ever leave him alone?
This story is realistic fiction. The author, Jon Scieszka, does a wonderful job explaining every thing. It is easy to understand and to follow. I think that anyone who knows how to read would enjoy this book. Never before have I read a book quite like this one. It is almost like a Roald Dahl book, where your mind will be wondering what will happen untill the very end. Personally, I loved this book, and I am sure that you will too.

Have you ever gone through a day with a song stuck in your head? The same thing happened to a young boy, except he couldn't stop seeing math problems!
In this interactive children's book, a boy is told that life can be looked at as a math problem. After that, everything he sees or does is a math problem! He has to break the curse and go back to his normal life.
Math Curse is a well written children's book. It has maturity mixed with adolescence, and helps children develop skills for life. It's humorous and parents will enjoy reading it, too. To Jon Scieska and Lane Smith-well done!

I bought the "Math Curse" for my 6 year old and he absolutely LOVED IT!!! There is no going wrong with this book, your kids are guaranteed to be excited about math in the end of the story!
