Use at your own risk.......2007-07-16
Did Henry Ford actually invent the automobile? Were there actually only 4,000 slaves in the South? Like other reviewers, I've gleaned a lot of very useful information from this test guide, but there are so many errors -- dozens and dozens of them -- that I find myself repeatedly having to seek out other reference sources to verify the facts I am suspicious of. Use this test guide at your own risk.
Not worth the risk!.......2007-07-14
The innumerable grammar and spelling errors are irritating, but it is the content errors that prompted my first review of a book. This book claims that Isaac, son of Abraham, experienced two name changes: the first from Isaac to Jacob, the second from Jacob to Israel. It goes on to state that Isaac's 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. Any 1st grade Sunday Schooler could tell you how wrong this is. Such a major error makes me suspect the rest of the content. My biggest regret is that I've spent so much time using it as a review guide only to now have to wonder if what I've learned is true.
Most Excellent Resource!.......2007-04-27
Overall, I feel this book is the best way to prepare for the CSET. I purchased the online study program and the Cliffs Test Prep and they were okay. Beating the CSET has an entire chapter devoted to stategies on taking the tests, as well as comprehensive outlines for the essay sections. There aren't any practice tests in this book, but memorizing practice tests is NOT a good method to study anyway. Besides, there are practice tests available online for free, if that's your thing. The only other advice I can give for passing the CSET is to take each subtest separately, unless you are exceptionally bright and/or live for stress. Best of luck to you!
Very Informative Text.......2007-04-22
This book is definitley informative with lots of information to know. I haven't taken the CSET yet, but hope to pass by studying from this book and other supplements.
I found the book to contain errors that are minor, but then became irritating. The errors sometimes confused me and it got to be very frustrating b/c you weren't sure what was right. Overall, a great book to study from, but have other supplemental books handy as well.
Best Prep Out There!.......2007-02-21
I purchased 4 books to prepare for the CSET and this one was by far the most comprehensive. If you know the info in this book, you will ACE the test. That is one of the problems, however. This book is SOOOOOO detailed that sometimes it's frustrating. However this book, in my opinion was KEY to me passing the test. The other books helped with practice tests, but I mainly studied from this one. Took all 3 tests the same day and passed them all on the first try. Good luck!!

ICTS book.......2007-07-03
Excellent and detailed information for studying for the content exam. The math section was far more detailed than the actual test, but it made the test that much easier to do well on. Give yourself at least a few weeks to study though because there is a LOT of information that is covered in this book. It is well worth the money!!
Really helped with the MTEL!.......2007-03-08
Book was great for studying Math, English, Science, and History sections. I never learned American history, but I was able to get everything I needed from this book.
My only complaint is that the information provided for the Child Development area wasn't in-depth enough. It covered the basics, but didn't focus on enough theorists. Luckily I was a psychology major, and was able go to my psch books for info.
One recommendation is start studying early. There is a lot of information to cover and you don't want to start cramming the week before the exam...like we did :-)
Still passed though!

Not really what I was looking for.
Won't help for AEPA...at all!.......2006-08-19
If you have the AEPA in your future this book will not help you at all, and it should not even be listed on the cover of this book! The book also provides a description of the test layout that is completely inaccurate.
Other things that bothered me with this study guide were the constant misspelling of words and disorganized sentences. Some sentences either contain words that aren't supposed to be there, or important words are left out leaving you guessing.
Get Ready to Pass!.......2006-03-17
I recently used this manual to prepare for taking the Praxis II in Elementary Education. It proved to be a thorough, well-written document that explained the 5W's in all subject areas. It was developed in such detail on every subject that it could be classified as a reference or training document. No manual/study guide begins to compare with this total package. I used this manual along with the knowledge requirements specified by ETS. It is very comprehensive. This document is so detailed, you must give yourself plenty of time to cover it. The effort will have you well prepared to pass your exam. Do not study for the exam without this book!
Book Description
. . . a theoretically grounded yet practical manual for coaches of mathematics teachers, and a vision of the possible for American public schools.
- Lauren B. Resnick, Director and Senior Scientist, Learning Research and Development Center, UPitt
West and Staub have raised the bar when it comes to knowing what high-quality staff development looks, feels, and sounds like.
- Shelley Harwayne, Superintendent of New York City's Community School District #2
What kind of supports would keep teachers well equipped to help all of their students succeed? What if these same supports kept teachers energized, passionate, and informed about their fields? Content-Focused Coaching offers just such a sustaining system. CFC is a long-range professional development practice in which coaches work individually or with groups of classroom teachers to design, implement, and reflect on rigorous, standards-based lessons that promote student learning. Authored by two educators closely involved with the design of CFC, this book is perfect for K-8 staff developers, teacher leaders, administrators, and others interested in improving mathematics education.
Lucy West and Fritz Staub explain the general tenets of CFC and the fundamental foundations upon which it rests. Then they provide a wealth of examples of coaching in action in New York City's Community School District #2, a district known nationally for its progressive, innovative, and rigorous focus on professional development. To give readers a richer picture of what CFC entails, the three accompanying CD-ROMs contain extensive video footage of coaching sessions, including the preconference, lesson, and postconference. Full transcripts of the video segments can be used with the book or as independent tools for study groups.
Improve mathematics education. Rekindle teachers' passions for their profession. Read West and Staub and implement Content-Focused Coaching in your school or district.

Coaching How to.......2007-08-10
Lucy West gives the reader an inside view to the coaching position. The CD's let you see an expert in action and then read about what the author/coach is thinking. This was extremely helpful in moving me to the next step in becoming a good math coach.
Book Description
THE book for elementary education mathematics content courses!
Designed to help prospective teachers of elementary school mathematics learn content beyond the rote level, this text stimulates readers to think beyond just getting the problem right and fosters their development into thoughtful, reflective, self-motivated, life-long learners. It stresses the
what and
why of elementary school mathematics content. Hints are provided about how to teach the content but this is mostly left to courses and texts that are dedicated to that purpose.
The text is organized around the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics' Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. The Standards dictate the basic sections of the text. Within each section, appropriate specific topics are developed, intertwined with technology, problem solving, assessment, equity issues, planning, teaching skills, use of manipulatives, sequencing, and much more. In addition, major focal points of the Standards are emphasized throughout: effective teachers of mathematics should be able to motivate all students to learn, should understand the developmental levels of how children learn, should concentrate on what children need to become active participants in the learning environment, and should be engaged in ongoing investigations of new mathematical concepts and teaching strategies.
Mathematics Content for Elementary Teachers is based on several
fundamental premises:
*The focus of mathematics education should be on the process, not the answer.
*Elementary teachers should know the mathematics content they are teaching, know more than the content they are teaching, and teach from the overflow of knowledge.
*It is important for teachers to be flexible in allowing students to use different procedures--teaching from the "overflow of knowledge" implies knowing how to do a given operation more than one way and being willing to examine many different ways.
*Teachers need to learn to carefully cover the topics to be taught, to reflect upon them, and to be able to organize them. To help prospective elementary teachers concentrate on the mathematics content they will be expected to teach and begin to build the foundation for the methods they will use, this text includes only elementary mathematics content and does not address middle school concepts.
Pedagogical features:
*The text is organized according to NCTM Standards.
*An informal writing style speaks directly to readers and is geared to pre-service teachers.
*Focus is given to multiple methods of problem solving at four developmental levels.
*Questions, exercises and activities are interspersed throughout each section rather than gathered at the end of each chapter.
*Complete solutions for exercises are provided.
