Best books on the subject available.......2007-05-16
This is the first book in a series by this author -- these books represent the absolute best information on bear attack survival available anywhere. If you spend any time in bear country, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to read these books. I have a set at home and a set in my cabin in the Colorado Rockies for guests. The black bear population in the mountains within 40 miles of Denver is increasing. They are not cuddly.
Some commonsense stuff, some bias.......2005-05-23
Easy to read, field manual style book. I've attended this guys bear safety course, and he has conducted hundreds of these courses for thousands of clients throughout western North America, especially for people who have to work in bear country. The book outlines different strategies to AVOID negative bear encounters, and gets a little political at times. Shelton subscribes to the "people first-bears second" philosophy. I would too if getting mauled by a hungry bear, problem is some of his claims such as bear populations are stable to increasing in all areas of British Columbia, don't hold much water, at least not in the Grizzly popn. case. No real population studies/scientific papers to back this up, just the claim of the so-called hundreds of field workers he has talked to. Sorry not too scientific! Good read and some good common sense stuff, especially on the info regarding predatory Black Bears and how to recognize this behaviour/avoid it (Do not play dead!) Unfotunately gets a little preachy at the end tends to detract somewhat from the overall tone. Definetly recommend it for anyone working/traveling in heavy use bear country, just concentrate on the strategy sections.
Everyone should red this before going into the wilderness!.......2001-08-13
This guide is indispensible, not filled with the "man is always in the wrong" agenda, but rather documented with real stats and factual details. This book will let you know what to do in just about any scenario in which a bear attacks you. Also try Shelton's "Bear Attacks: The Dealy Truth" which goes into WHY bears attack people.
Everyone should read this before going out into the wild!.......2001-08-13
This guide is indispensible, not filled with the "man is always in the wrong" agenda that many authors shove into their bear books. This is filled with documented, acurate details on what to do if you are attacked by a bear, given the circumstances. Try Shelton's "Bear Attacks: The Deadly Truth.," which goes into more detail as to WHY bears attack.
Working With Gary Shelton.......2001-03-05
I have read both of Garys's Books AND I have taken both the class roon and rifle range instruction. I have had the classroom Instruction twice , unfortunatly the range instruction is no longer available. Both of his books form the basis of his lectures. It is now compulsory training with the forestry, WCB, BC Gass and Fisheries and Oceans. His books should be concidered TEXT BOOKS. Well written easy to understand and without ANY embelishments of the facts and occurences. As presented it is the true story of the present conditions of bear behavior . For those of us who have worked in bear country and used Gary's books as a study, the knowledge immparted becomes next to instinctive when an encounter happens. Having had hundreds of encounters while counting Spawning salomn in wild rivers, I have been able to avoid any serious agressive confrontations. There have been encounters where it was necesssary to take a defencive posture. Mr. Shelton's two books are, or should be manditory reading for any person tho uses " bear country" for recreation or work. To let you know a 3rd book is due out in May 2001 and a 4th is being contemplated.

When naturalist Kilham was asked to take in two orphaned black bear cubs, the conventional wisdom was that he would end up with 200-pound brutes too dependent to leave home. So Kilham decided to try his own unconventional method--he raised them in their natural habitat, surrounded by the wild bear-filled woods of New Hampshire. As their bear mother, he was given an unprecedented look into the lives of bears and what he observed turns bear stereotypes on their head. Black bears exhibit behaviors thought to be found only in humans and great apes, such as an intricate system of communication and cooperation, insight, planning, deception, and even ethics, like fair play, empathy, and altruism (qualities not found in apes). Kilham, who has now raised 26 cubs, is an intrepid bear mom, and a humble and delightful storyteller. This is an irresistible story of some of the most endearing rogues ever encountered. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
A first-person account of wild bear behavior that is both a thrilling animal story and a groundbreaking work of science. In the spring of 1993, Ben Kilham, a naturalist who lives in the woodlands of New Hampshire, began raising a pair of orphaned wild black bears. The experience changed his life. While spending thousands of hours with the cubs, Kilham discovered unknown facets of bear behavior that have radically revised our understanding of animal behavior. Now widely recognized for his contributions to wildlife science, Kilham reveals that bears are altruistic and cooperate with unrelated, even unknown individuals, while our closer relatives, the supposedly more highly evolved chimps, cooperate only within troops of recognizable members. Kilham, who turned a disability, dyslexia, to his advantage as a naturalist, offers fascinating insights into the emotional life of bears. His work-which has been featured in several National Geographic television specials-also illustrates the powerful black bear intelligence that has survived bounties and overhunting to make them North America's dominant omnivore, familiar to every reader. Beyond the natural history, he introduces individual bears who become enthralling and memorable characters. As in the bestselling books by Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Among the Bears explores the breaking down of mutual suspicion and building up of trust between species, with its hopeful implications for the shared future of humans and animals in the wild.

Understanding bears.......2006-11-07
Kilham's experience and Gray's writing offer excellent insight into bears' instinctive knowledge by describing how young orphaned cubs in Kilham's care learn how to become wild bears. I reread the book immediately after concluding it so I could take full advantage its information. I recommend Among the Bears to anyone who deals with these amazing animals professionally or informally. Motivation, communication, and dispersal are well covered in a truly understandable and engrossing manner.
Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild.......2006-03-13
I'm only half way through the book but I can tell you it is difficult to put down. As a wildlife Rehabilitator I find Benjamin Kilham's book informative yet fun to read.
Black Bears are great .......2005-12-25
I just finished reading Among the Bears and I think Benjamin did a great job at describing the bears body language, and his explenation of what their sounds and gestures meant are superb,,,I have seen a lot of bears in the last 40 years and have seen several of these gestures..This book starts out a little slow but soon picks up and then I could not stop reading, This book does tell it like it really is in the bears world good and bad
Benjamin Kilham is a complete idiot - He actually supports bear hunting!!!.......2005-07-31
I've never been more disappointed in a book and I think this is the first book I've ever actually returned. I didn't want this man to get a single penny from me. My concerns were immediately raised when I read that he was a gunmaker and when he made the comment "I reached out to poke the radio on to a country western station. I like to listen to songs with lyrics I can understand". So I immediately look up bear hunting in the index and am soon horrified to read that he supports hunting and even bear hunting and tries to justify it as a valid wildlife management technique! How he could ever raise cubs and yet still support murdering them for fun is beyond me. Torturing and/or killing animals for pleasure is a classic sign of being a sociopath. So if you love wildlife and bears like I do and if you're an intelligent person then you will avoid this book like the plaque. If you want to read an amazing book about bears and two amazing people then get "Grizzly Heart" by Charlie Russel and Maureen Enns. Unfortunately, for some reason this book isn't yet available in the US and you must order it from Canada but its worth the extra trouble.
Meet the Bears.......2002-09-17
This book is basically a primary source about black bears, a subject that, as the author points out, has received spotty attention. "Among the Bears" partially remedies this neglect: it is rich in anecdote, modest yet persuasive in analyses.
This book has many small, satisfying pleasures to it, not the least of which is the idea of a large, stereotypically manly guy like Kilham being a mother to these bears. And he is an amazing mother, patient, wise and tireless. He always lends his bears an ear, literally (for suckling). Another is the reader learns along with Kilham, who continues to turn over the behaviors of his bears in his head, often coming to explanations only after thinking and experimenting. Finally, his physical encounters with bears are entertaining and, I think, instructive about how bears (and humans) become at ease with each other.
The book is very plain in language. As his story progressed, the content of the ideas was plenty engaging, and more than made up for any lack of style.
Telling the history of his interactions with bears, including an unusually large male interested in Squirty, one of the female bears he has raised, Killham ventures prescriptive advice about how to handle a bear encounter only at the end of the book. "Hold your ground, stay calm, maintain eye contact, and let the situation resolve itself. It will." (245)
Throughout the book, Kilham has relevant and undogmatic insights about hunting and hunters.
A small complaint: A bibliography, or more simply--in the character of this straightforward, unpretentious book--a short list of suggested readings would have been welcome. However, the basic but thorough index is excellent.

Book Description
In the animal-loving tradition of James Herriot, this delightful story, now in paperback, explores the relationship between man and one of natures smartest, most interesting, and sensitive creaturesthe black bearand how this experience enriched two peoples lives. Poignant and entertaining, and enhanced by photos that reveal a unique and amazing friendship, Summers with the Bears is a fascinating chronicle of what happens when humans and wild animals cross the boundaries into each others world.
Customer Reviews:
An amazing story........2005-03-31
Though I have often thought of the similarities between the noses of bears and my own labrador retriever, and been tempted to ascribe those labrador characteristics to bears, I knew better. My reading about bears has included many tales of bear maulings and their extreme medical consequences. This book, though, showed me that bears can equal our canine buddies in establishing full and rich relationships. This unique story of love among the Minnesota woods made me wish that I could pull up stakes and establish a home in the woods and wait for the bears to visit. It really makes one wonder what relationships with other animals we might have if given the opportunity.
A New Understanding of Bears.......2004-01-03
I never understood black bears until reading Jack Becklund's book. I laughed and cried, feeling as if I was right there with Jack and his wife Patti. Afterward, I wanted to visit that area, see the house, see the yard where Little Bit and the other bears played. I now want to find out more about helping these wonderful creatures survive. I have never been more moved by a book. I would love to communicate with Jack and Patti some time and get a picture of "Conversation with a Bear". They are incredible people and so fortunate to have had such a gift in their lives as becoming intimately involved with God's beautiful wildlife.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book. I am reading it again now for the second time. It is hard to put down. Thank you Jack and Patti for sharing this beautiful experience with us.

Magical!.......2003-01-11
If you love animals, nature, the great outdoors, and reading about people who love all those things too, please get this book, sit down with a box of tissues, and enjoy! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shake your head in wonderment. The author Jack Becklund and his wife Patti, move deep into the Minnesota forests. Their property is home to deer gamboling on the lawn, chipmunks and hand-fed squirrels munching seeds on the porch, wild mallard ducks swimming and splashing in the creek below, and a colorful array of native birds. But the real heart of the story is Little Bit, the black bear cub who toddles onto the back deck one day, and stays for the next six summers as a welcome, loving, and deeply loved guest of the couple. She is a magical spirit, a living, breathing gift from God, sent to bring great joy to their lives. We are honored to meet Little Bit's cubs, her mates, and numerous other black bears who live in the area, and come to trust the Becklunds. The story itself is incredible, but between the lines, we watch the couple come to love and appreciate the power of this sacred trust they've been given...the joy of the relationship they share with these magnificent animals. This is a book for all time...a classic in every sense of the word. The photos are magnificent, and bring the personalities of the animals into beautiful focus.
Best book I ever read!!!!.......2000-08-21
Summer with the bears is by far the best book I've ever read. If you don't have it or haven't read it do so now. It will change your life in some way I'm sure. I first read about it in the Reader's Digest and put my copy on order for the moment it came out. Little bit and all of the other bears touched my heart so much it's hard ot describe. I felt like I was there with them as events were happening. Jack and Patti you are so lucky to have had this special time in your lives and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sharing it with us. Just goes to show that all animals are not as we always imagine them to be, yet we know at the same time they are not all created equal. There are those that possess a special trait and willingness to be different, that was little bit. Your book was written from your heart, and the pictures helped us to be there too. I laughed and I cried along with you. so few of us will experience what you did interacting with the bears on the level that you did. I attribute your book to helping me find a hidden talent I did not know existed in me. I started sketching, and yes mostly bears. I did one of you and Patti with little bit, if you'd ever like them all you need to do is ask and they are yours. You touched my life in such a special way that in turn I'd like to touch your lives too. Hope there will be more books and I wish you all the best in your lives. Thank You for sharing your special lives with the world.
short and sweet.......2000-07-29
Summer With The Bears is about a couple who decide to leave the city for an adventure in Minnesota to observe the bears. At first Jack & Patti started out just observing the bears for hours to learn their habits and earn their confidence. And they do earn their trust. There were many more animals that they befriended. They kept a journal on everything that happened concerning the bears and other animals. They even named the bears.
As a true animal lover, I really liked this book. The pictures added to the book. If you are looking for a short and sweet read this is the book for you.

Woods dwellers: Buy This Book!!!.......2007-08-26
Everyone who lives where ANY wild animals are, not just bears, would benefit from reading this book, and equally important, the animals would benefit from people reading this book. It tells how to coexist and enjoy nature without creating or having to deal with problem animals. When people and animals clash, the animals always lose in the end, so help yourself and them with the good advice in this book.
A good general guide.......2007-07-12
This book is worth the money and proviodes lots of good tips for avoiding conflicts. It does not contain much information on bear biology, but then again it doesn't present itself as a natural history guide. I would reccommend it to anyone interested in bear-human conflicts.
Fun to read, accurate, practical.......2007-06-13
This is far and away the best book available for a typical person who has a home or cabin in bear country and wants to know how to cope with bears. It doesn't read like a boring textbook--the writing is light and easy. But retired Colorado Division of Wildlife Conservation biologist Tom Beck did the technical editing, so it's accurate. Most books about bears have not been reviewed by a real expert, so they're filled with erroneous information--some of it quite dangerous. You can trust the advice in this book. It's practical without being preachy. If you decide to be a beekeeper in black bear country--yep, bears do like honey--Living With Bears gives you detailed instructions on how to keep bears out with an electric fence. It provides pragmatic advice for any bear situation you're likely to encounter. If you live in bear country and you want to be a good neighbor, this book will help you understand why bears behave the way they do. Outstanding.
Bears, bears, bears!!!.......2007-05-09
This book is awesome!! The perfect guide to co-existing with our big furry creature. I live in bear country and the bears are definitely out and about. Linda Masterson's book has helped me tremendously with methods of establishing boundaries and educating me on bear behavior. The book is easy to read and I would highly recommend you have it on hand!
Good advice for those who visit or live in bear habitat.......2007-01-05
This book should be required reading for anyone who vacations or moves into bear country. Through the words of expert biologists in the field as well as the experiences of communities that have developed plans to keep bears and people safe, Linda Masterson offers valuable advice. When it comes to coexistence with bears, education is the key, and this book offers very practical education. As an educator for Appalachian Bear Rescue and a presenter of bear programs, I find this book to be an invaluable resource.

Book Description
On the afternoon of October 5, 2003, in Alaska's Katmai National Park, one or more brown bears killed and ate Timothy Treadwell, a well-known wildlife celebrity, and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard. This frightening and chilling story immediately captured worldwide media attention and ignited a firestorm of controversy. Death in the Grizzly Maze is the compelling account of Treadwell's intense life and dramatic death. Author Mike Lapinski chronicles Treadwell's rise from self-described alcoholic loser to popular grizzly-bear advocate, and he delves into the troubling issues raised by a new breed of wildlife celebrities.
Customer Reviews:
Fact, rationalization or apology?.......2006-09-01
Although this book cannot be tagged the Anti-Treadwell story, it represents the viewpoints of many professional biologists employed by Alaska and/or the federal gov. It is important to know both sides, and well worth your while to read this account. It may even explain some of the influences on Treadwell's death, although I am sure no one intended that. It is almost a rationalization offered in place of an apology. Go ahead - read it.
Death in the Grizzly Maze.......2006-08-24
I had watched the film on Timothy Treadwell's life and was very interested in reading more about what happened. I ordered this book hoping to learn more, which I did. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in both sides of the story. Very well written.
Far Reaching.......2006-06-17
This book is pretty far reaching. Obviously the author came into the book with preconceived judgments. It is less a book about Treadwell and more a book about Lapinski and his views on everything from psychology to hunting. There are great materials out there that provide a balanced account of the Treadwell story, this is not one of them. The author over dramatizes situations to his advantage and repeats his views over and over again as if to convince the reader he is right.
The author tries to be subtle about his distaste for New Age ideas and animal rights activism, but it is evident throughout the book. He portrays the people who loved Treadwell and the way they choose to honor his memory as silly and those who object to Treadwell as enlightened. He tries to illustrate his understanding of Treadwell by comparing the adrenaline rush of killing a wild animal with that of getting close to one that is alive. This kind of lack of insight is evident throughout the book.
Lapinski manages to blame Treadwell for everything except global warming in this book including making Treadwell responsible for bear haters hating bears more and for bear lovers engaging in risky behaviors. He also leans towards making Treadwell responsible for Amie Huguenard's death. She was a 37 year old, well educated outdoor enthusiast. It was not her first time at the park with Treadwell. She had also just left and chose to come right back a few days before she was killed. I think it dishonors her memory to portray her as a love struck girl not capable of making her own decisions or deciding what risks she was willing to take.
The author finds nothing good in Treadwell's legacy and if you are one of the people who were touched by him, then you are just one of those animal-crazy eco people. In the end it is almost amusing to see this author, a hunter who has written books on hunting, taking a dead man to task for getting two bears killed.
Certainly a critical look a Treadwell requires an analysis of his mistakes, but it also requires an objective outlook that this author just does not have.
good read.......2006-03-17
This book is interesting. However, I found it a bit too negative on Treadwell. Also, he never even interviews Jewel Palovak, saying that she would not be interviewed due to his being a bear hunter. The other Maze book however, the Grizzly Maze, does interview Jewel and he is also a former bear hunter. More research, please.
Timothy Treadwell, a gentle man who truely loved and cared for all wild creatures.......2006-02-23
To many humans Timothy Treadwells story may seem "out there and crazy". The fact that Timothy loved the bears and other wild animals so much most probably seems nuts to most humans..I know, as I am a wildlife rehabilitator, I know what many people honestly think of wild animals and those who try to help them. Timothy enjoyed being with the bears and fox and he enjoyed learning about their ways of life as well as educate the public.Timothy protected not only Grizzly Bears but other wild animals. There are people however, who thought that Timothy may have done harm to the Grizzlys by allowing them to trust him.To be imprinted. Timothy felt so close to these animals..he could not help it.
Being a wildlife rehabilitator myself,I know for a fact that the wild animals seem only to imprint on their caretaker and not other humans. So, I am certain that the Grizzly Bears only trusted Timothy. Unfortunaty, the one bear who Timothy could not earn trust from is the one who killed him. But one should understand that the only reason this Grizzly killed Timothy is because this Grizzly was caught and hurt in the past by other humans.
Only those people who truely love animals such as Timothy did can understand Timothy and love this film. They will be able to actually put themselves in Timothy's place. Timothy learned from and taught us all so much about the Grizzly world. Timothy gave us such such wonderful Grizzly Bear footage and photos. Something no other human has done.
Timothy lived the last 13 years of his life loving what he did and frustrated with the system and it's disrespect for all wild animals.
Timothy, as horrible his end was...died doing what he loved and would never ever want to see any harm done to his beloved Grizzly's.
This film is one I can see many times and never tire of.
Timothy's love for animals and his sense of humor shown in the film are priceless.
Thank you for this film and thank you dear Timothy.

Heartwarming and Wonderful!.......2000-09-12
Although I did not see the television documentary on these two little darlings, I nevertheless loved the book. Although they are now big bears, the story of little Klondike and Snow's early years is interesting, educational and touching. Abandoned by their mother as cubs, the two bears were raised by humans. This book clearly illustrates the love and devotion of the Denver Zoo towards the cubs' care and development. Klondike and Snow are now thriving at Sea World's Wild Arctic exhibit, were they have plenty of living space and attention!
This book is wonderful for any animal lover and people interested in animal/human interaction.
A Teacher's Review of "Klondike and Snow".......2000-06-21
Anyone who was fascinated by the PBS program on these two polar bears will enjoy this book. It tells the story of their early years before being transfered to the Florida zoo. The photos are amazing! I've used this book as a resource with K-6th graders, and all ages have loved it. The text under the photos is very small and in blue, making it difficult to read, but the main text is fine, and otherwise the book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in these two very special bears.

Book Description
This guide dispels the myth that grizzly bears are the ferocious attackers some people believe them to be. Instead, it offers a comprehensive guide to acting safely when encountering them in grizzly country and to the pleasures of observing them in their natural habitats. Partial proceeds of this book support the Great Bear Foundation.

A lot of good information without a lot of reading!.......2001-09-24
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in grizzly bears. It contained a lot of important information without a lot of unnecessary reading. Short and straight to the point.
The sketches were beautiful. The book is also easy to carry along for grizzly bear watchers.
second edition (1996) better than the first (1992).......1998-10-13
Now in its second printing, with correction of a couple earlier errors, the Field Guide to the Grizzly Bear covers 500,000 years of this species' existence in just 48 pages. As the author, I can appreciate how difficult it is to write about so much in so few words. The field guide series by Sasquatch had already set excellent precedents in earlier works on the orca and bald eagle by the time I agreed to compose a guide to the grizzly. The basic requirement is to get it down briefly, and to get it right. I think it works very well as a brief introduction to the history, natural history, troubled present and risky future for one of nature's great creations.

Book Description
Track of the Grizzly is the culmination of one of the most ambitious wildlife studies ever undertaken - the Craighead field study of the grizzly bear, carried out in Yellowstone National Park and the huge ecosystem, spanning three states, in which it lies. Over a period of thirteen years, beginning in 1959, Frank Craighead, his brother John, and their colleagues used sophisticated scientific techniques to track hundreds of grizzlies, to discover the bears' social organization and seasonal movements, their breeding and feeding habits, and their life spans. This fascinating book illuminates the shortcomings of America's current system of wildlife management and provides an intimate, detailed, and definitive portrait of the greatest carnivore in our hemisphere.

Track of the Grizzly.......2006-11-11
A very readable, enjoyable book. It was published in 1979 so I'm sure there's more and newer information on the bears, but this is a great starting place. It's author (and his brother) are famous for their early grizzly studies.
Track of the Grizzly.......2003-06-30
A shortened and less scientific version of the Craighead's classic study of the Yellowstone grizzlies. For any one who wants to know more about grizzlies, this book is a must!!!!
The REAL story of Grizzly Bears.......2000-08-15
A very well written and entertaining book about the Criaghead's multi year study of the Grizzly Bears of the Yellowstone Eco system. The book while written by a Biologist, is very entertaining and an easy (light) read....not a scientific paper.
If you want to understand what Grizzly Bears are REALLY like, and want to understand this interesting animal- this is your book.
It's a great book to read if you visit the Yellowstone area and are somewhat "Bear-a-phobic" as a result of the sensational bear attack books. I was reading this book in Yellowstone this summer when I had my 1st bear incident in the 15 years I have been coming to the park. Armed with good information the "incident" became an interesting encounter with another one of YNP's great animals.
This is a book worth buying and keeping in your library.
