Book Description
This latest edition in the highly respected Swokowski/Cole precalculus series retains the elements that have made it so popular with instructors and students alike: its exposition is clear, the time-tested exercise sets feature a variety of applications, its uncluttered layout is appealing, and the difficulty level of problems is appropriate and consistent. Mathematically sound, ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY WITH ANALYTIC GEOMETRY, Eleventh Edition, effectively prepares students for further courses in mathematics through its excellent, time-tested problem sets. This edition has been improved in many respects, including the addition of technology inserts with specific keystrokes for the TI-83 Plus and the TI-86, ideal for students who are working with a calculator for the first time. The design of the text makes the technology inserts easily identifiable, so if a professor prefers to skip these sections it is simple to do so.

Great review for Calculus.......2007-06-22
I'm currently taking Calculus in the summer. My first week was hell because I had forgotten so much basic algebra. I'm thankful that I was able to relearn what I needed to know for the test, but now that I have this book, it's reassuring that I can find some examples and tips on how to solve algebra and trigonometry problems that is being asked in Calculus.
Best Algebra Book in the World (Jamie).......2007-01-01
This is the best algebra book in the world. The material and Examples are straight forward. Each section is taught very well. The exercises at the end of each section aim at bringing you to the next level of algebra. The trig section is also straight forward. Also, the the trig section is similar to Analytic Trigonometry(by Barnett,Ziegler, and Byleen).
The book is simply straight-forward. No matter what edition you have of this book,it's all about the same.however, this edition is great. An easy 5 stars.
Superb!.......2006-11-23
As a supplementary text, this book saved me in two college-level math clases (got A's in both)! It was my go-to source on countless occasions when the class text failed. You won't be disapointed with the student solutions manual, either: very complete with crystal-clear steps. You can't go wrong with this one!
If you want to understand algebra and/or trig, buy this book.......2003-04-20
As an unchallenged high school student 30 years ago, I never really put much effort into either algebra or trig and still managed to ace my tests. This lack of a rigorous algebraic and trigonometric foundation killed me in subsequent college calculus courses. This book fixed that problem, 30 years later! If you are looking for a book to challenge a motivated high school student, this is the book. I loaned it to one such student after I finished it and she very quickly completed a year and a half of high school algebra and trig in one summer and went on to ace honors calculus that fall.
For myself, I picked up this book several years ago and started my math re-education. There are numerous margin exercises that are to be completed immediately after a new concept is introduced in a section plus 50-70 section end exercises. These exercises directly reinforce what you have just studied. There are numerous sections in each chapter. This layout is really nice because as a self study, it normally took me several days to complete a chapter and if I had to wait to do exercises at the end of each chapter, I am positive my retention would have been much lower and my frustration higher, leading to a consequent lowering of motivation. Fortunately, just the opposite happened with this book. Every time I completed a section I was motivated to learn more which reduced the time required to complete each chapter. Finally each chapter has a chapter review then a comprehensive chapter test. If you miss a question in the chapter review, the answer section point to the relevant section for review.
Every margin, chapter review and chapter test exercise has the answer in the back of the book. The section-end exercises have only odd answers in the back of the book, but this is not a significant problem. I noticed several things about these exercises at the end of each section. The exercises are not just "make work" but increasingly challenge the reader. The exercises are such that they catch and expose deficiencies in math manipulation skills. If you are weak in some area of algebraic manipulation, it becomes readily apparent in the exercises. The even numbered exercises are variations on the odd numbered exercises. If you can do the odd exercises, you'll be able to do the even exercises and so not require the answers in the back. If you messed up the odd exercise and understand the nature of the mistake, you can still do the even numbered exercise with confidence.
The Trig section is short (3 chapters) and dense. Again problems are uniformly excellent. The chapter on trigonometric identities makes the book worth its price by itself and pays off handsomely when studying calculus and you are attempting to solve integrals via trigonometric substitution. There are three additional chapters introducing linear algebra, conic sections and sequences.
The book makes use of decent artwork and has technology sections utilizing graphing calculators, but is comprehensive without having such a calculator. Despite the hefty cost for a large format paperback, this book is definitely worth it. The binding has proven to be extremely durable. I just wish I had this book so many years ago. My college math courses would have been so much more enlightening.
The best math book I've seen.......1999-10-16
I'm an adult learner who has always had trouble with math. This was the text in pre-Calc. Provides (1) clear, step by step instruction, (2) uncomplicated margin exercises to reinforce basic concepts, (4) lots of good practical problems, (5) a sea of drill problems, (6) chapter review exercises and (7) chapter tests. I refer to this book regularly. I wish these folks would do a Calculus book!

This is an excellent book - period.......2007-06-16
I am 55 years old and promised myself that when I became financially able I would relearn Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus I, II,III & IV and ODE skills from start to finish. I am now finished with Sullivan's book I have found the book easy to read and understand. The presenation of the material is well thought out and the abundance of practice problems invaluable. If you are serious about math then this is a great book.
A retired hedge fund manager.
Helpful.......2007-02-11
This book has the solutions for the material presented in the book. The book has helped me alot. The only think I don't like about it, is that the book has to many practice exercises and too many pages.
Buyer Beware.......2004-08-08
The information listed in the "Product Details" section for this book is very misleading. As noted in the other comments, this book is the paperback Student Solutions Manual. It is NOT a hardcover book and the ISBN number is not ISBN: 0130914657 (as listed in the product detail section). This book may prove to be helpful but it was not the book I thought I ordered.
Very Good Precalculus Reference.......2003-08-06
With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals.
As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however.
Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in the inequality segments. On a very positive note, however, I will grant that the sixth chapter, which involves logarithms and exponents is quite fascinating. For instance, you have applied problems involving the amount of interest that can be gained after so many years if, say, [money amount]is deposited into an account and accumulates interest at 6% compounded quarterly. Physics problems are also well presented. One interesting tidbit: if you wondered how long it would take for a 300-degree dish to cool down to 100 degrees in an environment that is at room temperature, the formula that can be used, namely Newton's Law of Cooling, is provided. As another example: suppose that a dead animal was discovered in a barn at midnight and its temperature was 80°F° ; the temperature of the barn is kept constant at 60°F; two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to 75°F; find the time of death. The formula for this type of problem is also shown.
As added kudos, I especially like the intermittent TI-83 calculator tips. The use of technology in mathematics classes is notably increasing in the community colleges. All in all, this is a finer, more updated version, and it is especially recommended for those who want to go beyond the call of duty and discover new ways of applying mathematics to their daily lives.
Please read this review!!!!.......2003-04-27
1)Michael Sullivan (Sr.) is one of the four or five best writers
of math textbooks on today's scene. If you can find a textbook written by him that fits whatever current math course you are in
buy the book sight unseen. You will be more than happy that you
did.
2)As far as this book is concerned, I used it from chapter 1 to the end (every section of every chapter) and did every problem in
the book. I did not have an instructor and I was not enrolled in a course. I used the book to brush up for calculus after being out of school for 20 years.
3)This book is great for a course in college algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus. It serves all three purposes. I know this because after I finished the text and began studying
calculus, on my own, I was really able to appreciate how well
Sullivan's book prepared me for calculus.
4)The explanations of each concept are clear, not more rigorous
than is appropriate for a student at the level of the textbook,
but certainly not dumbed down.
5)The problems and questions are well written, comprehensive, and
most importantly, instructive. I found that the best question I
could ask myself about every problem in the book was "now what is
Sullivan trying to get me to see by doing this problem or answering this question". I mention this because this is what Sullivan is really good at; he doesn't spoon feed you.
6)Look, we all want essentially the same things from a textbook.
We want clearly written, well illustrated worked out problems
that allow us to grasp the concept in question so that we can use
it to solve problems and answer conceptual questions. With Sullivan, you get this in great measure.
This is a wonderful textbook for both sudents and teachers. It is
a great book to learn from and a great book to learn to teach from.

Customer Reviews:
Clear and understandable........2006-05-28
At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.
Not a single time did I felt lost or confused by the presentation. Most of the graphics and photos do supplement the explanation, and help the reader grasp the information better. One of the highlights, one that perhaps most people will miss, is the simple review questions at the beginning of each section. These little snippets of previous material force the reader to review those concepts that will be essential for further understanding.
Every new section in the book is short and clear; thus reducing the amount of explanation, but at the same time maintaining just enough so that the reader will not feel lost in the many formulas and derivations. If this book does not get "5 starts" from my review it is only because it could be more mathematically rigorous by presenting more proofs. But by not doing so it increases the clarity and easy presentation the book possesses - great book well worth the price.
reviews for the 7th edition?.......2006-01-19
why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same? is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th. the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content. maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.
it is my opinion that amazon will not post this as it obviously not a review, but it my contention that the 8 posted are not reviews of this edition, either. why are they posted?
well designed for self study.......2005-11-06
I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.
My one quibble with the book is the way trigonometry is introduced. It seems to be needlessly convoluted so if you are thinking of adopting it you should read the first two or three sections covering trig. I chose to supplement it with my own notes.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to supplement a high school precalculus course with a book that is stronger on theory vs. graphing calculator techniques. There are some very inadequate precalculus texts out there. If you are serious about mathematics and your school is using an approach that employs graphing calculators in a heavy way, you may want to use this book. In that case consider an older (cheaper) edition.
Update: Another reviewer comments that the 7th ed and the 6th ed may be significantly different. Well, they are not.
Good book. Especially With Solution Manual........2005-07-27
Bought the teachers edition and 2 solution manual books (1500+pages each) all for 63 bucks. BRAND NEW!
Anyways, this book I find to be a lot better than many many of the other math text books out there. What is nice about this book is the simple fact that it doesn't try as hard to fool you as the others. Other text books seem to be written by people that are really advanced and think, in a way, that we are as well. They sometimes don't realize that the stuff they put down into text books might be a lot harder to someone that doesn't have a firm gasp and understanding as they have.
I mean...don't you hate text books that give you examples and solutions, but all of the examples are of easy problems and the ones that you do want to know are not shown? In highschool, I didn't know weither to use my math text books to learn or use it as heating fuel for the winter nights. Listening to the teacher wasn't very helpful because he followed the pace of his more advance nerdy students and using the book to catch up helped as much as little if nothing.
This book, however, can actually teach you pretty much everything step by step, especially if you use it with the solutions manual which shows you step by step how the answers are achieved. For once, I'm learning more from the book than from the teacher. They should hire the book, it would be cheaper. I'm sure the book will grade us by a curve as well and be nicer to us. This whole summer semester I've been learning almost everything from the book, the teacher is just extra.
The way the book is made, its an accumalative (spelled wrongly I bet) kind of thing. You can learn it all if you go through it from a to z, beginnig to end. Of course you'll still need guidance here and there, but it is made so clearly that it gives you a peace of mind. Suddenly, the secret codes are being decoded.
A pretty looking book that'll probably cost you a bundle (USED in textbook store for $109!?) however is all worth it. Spend your money on something that is really worth it and get this, solutions manual about $35 more or less.
COLLEGE MATH: 1+1=3 (Learn it well young grasshopper, cause one day, we shall see which affects the other more)
GREAT, WONDERFUL, SPECTACULAR.......2004-08-17
THis book is fabulous. There are clear examples with step by step instruction. It has good applications in the real world and the problems are wonderful and challenging.

A rediculous, irresponsible seller!!!!.......2007-05-01
The front page of the book is full of obscene and foul language. The book was badly trashed and was a school book that has school names all over it.
It is extremely irresponsible for the seller to sell the book for a high price but did not do something about the foul language that was written all over the book. Profit making is more important than professionalism I guess!Furthermore the seller did not even attempt to contact me after my initial complaint THREE weeks ago!

After my son's book was missing over a period, I thought I would have to pay another $90-$100's mid-way through the school year. I ordered this "used" book. It came on time. It was in perfect condition and I was truly overjoyed. Thanks to the sellers, shippers and amazon.

Algebra 1 or Calculators for the Stupid?.......2001-05-15
This book pretends to be an Algebra 1 textbook, but is more of a calculator instruction manual. A child who completes a course based upon this book will be highly proficient in the use of his or her calculator, but will not have gained an iota of mathmatical skill or knowledge. If you are considering this book, I suggest you pull the instruction book from the box your calculator came in, it is just as useful and not near as heavy. On the upside, the book has lots of pretty colors.
Great Book!.......2000-06-13
I am student from Oklahoma. I have used this book in our Algebra I class. This book is truly a terrific book. This book has real-life situations and great examples! If you are planning to buy this book than absolutely do. After you use this book you won't want to buy any other. Heath Algebra I. A book designed for the modern world.
Perfect!.......2000-03-18
I as a student had Saxton math books. I didn't like them very much. When I got into High School we were introduced into the Heath mathematics course. These books have real - life applications and real life equations in them. They also get you ready for the math courses you take in College.

Decent at best........1999-01-06
The book is decent. But is not a great text book. It's highlihgted formulas, etc... are very helpful, but it doesn't seem to explain a lot of things in a way to make them easily understandable. I have used many different math books, and I would not use this one unless you are teaaching extremely bright students.

Customer Reviews:
Hard, but good.......2005-01-19
I use this book for my tenth grade algerbra 2 honours class. It has very good examples and is very thourough with the information. However, we never go beyond halfway through the practice problems because after the first ten or so sets, the problems are so challenging and difficult, it becomes a time waster to spend all our time going over such hard equations. It is a very good textbook, and the CD is handy.
