I bought a book that comes with a CD: the CD is defective. It can no be played. I have written two letters asking what should I do. I want the product, but a need a CD that is not defective. No answer from Amazon.
I am very dissapointed. I am not buying another product until this matter is solved.

5 out of 5 stars What goes bump in the night.......2007-04-29

If you live in the woods or country and are curious about what goes bump in the night, this book and CD will explain those noises. We kept hearing a wonderful creature but had no way to identify it. Turns out it was a screech owl (they don't hoot nor do they screech). This book has also helped identify several frogs & night birds. As a bonus, Lang has a very pleasant voice and the CD is well made.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but covers to large an area.......2006-01-12

It's nice to listen to in the car (for a while, at least). It's pretty useless, though, since the geographical area is not limited enough. There might be a couple of those 60 animals in your area, but about 50 of 'em won't be. This should be a series of CD's: one for the northeast, one for the southwest....and so on.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing and informative.......2001-10-01

I love Lang Elliott's voice. It is very soothing and doesn't detract from the bird, reptile and insect sounds. I was able to identify a Horned Owl from the CD, so it is informative, too. The sounds are grouped on different tracks so it's easy to find the category you want, much better than a cassette tape.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and wonderful nature guide by Lang Elliott.......2000-03-29

This is a truly special release from Lang Elliott, the author of numerous nature CDs and books (including the splendid "Music of the Birds" and "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs.") On this compact disc (or cassette) and its accompanying booklet, he introduces the sounds of common North American night animals. To my knowledge, no one else has compiled a field guide to the sounds of night animals with sounds from many groups of creatures all in one place (i.e., birds, mammals, amphibians, etc.)

The recording is a constant delight and will probably make you aware of the source of many sounds you have heard but not identified before. Don't be surprised to say, "So THAT'S what that is" many times while listening to the tape or CD. Also be prepared for surprises. Think you hear cats fighting outside your window at night? They may be cats, but they also could be raccoons, which often sound remarkably like angry felines. That strange, ghostly hiss or scream you may have heard at night in the country? An angry cat perhaps, but it might be a barn owl. And there are many other special sounds identified here: the rhythmic calls of nightjars like the whippoorwill, the trills and croaks of amphibians, the surprisingly snort of the white-tailed deer.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you must have this guide. Take it on a camping trip with you, if you have a portable CD player or cassette player. Those night woods will not seem so forbidding anymore once you know that most of the time, the strange and fascinating sounds you hear are made by completely harmless creatures.

Product Description

This haunting jungle of a novel has been hailed as "a masterpiece" by Luis Bunuel and "one of the great novels not only of Spanish America, but of our time" by Carlos Fuentes. The story of the last member of the aristocratic Azcoitia family, a monstrous mutation protected from the knowledge of his deformity by being surrounded with other freaks as companions, The Obscene Bird of Night is a triumph of imaginative, visionary writing. Its luxuriance, fecundity, horror, and energy will not soon fade from the reader's mind.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars multidimensional apnea.......2006-12-29

I have a really hard time finding fitting words for describing this work. I will, perhaps in the manner of the author and the formal lines the story follows, will make the following word association: voices, flux, silence, gravitational intermitence, mentalese, overcrowding, sensation overflow, vertiginous, fast, schizophrenic, haunting, implosive, relentlessness... extremes, circles, spirals, ouroboros that eventually finds that recursion leads to nothing; that is, indeed, the last word: Nothingness.

I tried to show you by way of just a chain of emotions and ideas what you will most certainly experience by reading it.

There are two advices I most heartily provide:

1) Read it in spanish. Please do try. No translation can do justice to this piece, specially in terms of rythm and word play.

2) Prepare your mental voice to adopt the rythms given by the author on each paragraph, on each sentence. I do know this may sound obvious, but in this specific case, it cannot be overstated. Almost every paragraph will be an extreme and wild travel, a rollercoaster of voices and emotions and images, all entwined and tangled together quite organically. The author made a strategic use of commas and dots, comply with his strategy and the trip, the mesmerizing experience, will be unavoidable.

This is by no means a literary critic, since I barely enjoy most kinds of novels but, in this very particular case, you cannot avoid the gravitation of the work, the way it draws you near as if it had a thousand hooks, the way it never completely lets go, even upon reaching its end. This is, by far, one of the most superbly accomplished works of narrative I've ever read. I thought no one could even begin to compare to Rulfo, Sartre or Kafka, three of my personal favorites, but this book, although essentially different, even surpasses them.

That much I recommend you this work of art, a supernova of images and spears and apneas, multi-dimensional apneas.

4 out of 5 stars The darker side of magic realism........2006-09-18

I would not know where to begin to try to summarize this book. There are several story arcs, and several narrative voices which are actually all one voice-- different guises of Humberto Peñaloza. He is an unborn fetus (miracle baby), a frustrated nun, an improbable mute, and the secretary to a rich man who may or may not have fathered the rich man's deformed baby.

The Obscene Bird of Night is justly considered one of the best books in Chilean literature. Richly and skilfully written, its myth and metaphor wraps around itself to be moving, horrifying, mystifying and satisfying.

This is a book that needs some time. It is very far from an easy read. If I have not given it five stars, it is not a comment on the genius of the book. Rather, it is simply that it is more grotesque than I really have the stomach to enjoy in an unqualified way. I admire it immensely, and recommend it unhesitatingly.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond times.......2005-09-12

This is one of the best latinamerican books, further than magic realismus (realismo mágico) this novel traspasses all the borders beyond time, gender, reality and absurd. Dark novel that takes you into your own clue du sac. This wonderful story narrated by a mute man, who becomes all the voices in the novel, is like a monad of humanity, himself represents all the human disgraces, inherited from generation to generation and unable to scape fate. Must not be missed if you want to take a deep immersion into human condition.

5 out of 5 stars The best in surrealism.......2004-10-10

Rarely is a book more complex, more funny or more harrowing. The magical tale of Humberto Penazola who spends the last days of his life in a convent taking care of old women, is narrated through a series of surreal hallucinations. Questions of his identity and his sexuality are explored beyond the realms of imagination. Tumbling through a dark spiral of black magic - this book is a MUST read for one and all!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastical.......2004-05-22

This novel is the most weird and fantastical novel I have ever read. This, of course, means it is one of the best. The plot is surreal, the words are deep and rich, and it is so original, so beautiful and so brave, that any reader if affected by it.
When reading, you are plunged into such a different world that the images created encase you, lock you into the plot.
This novel, is a step into the mist for anyone who has only stuck to the odd thriller. It is a opening to wider horizons - that of magic realism.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2006-02-08

My daughter (2.5) and I fell in love with this book the first time we read it. I love that all the baby animals sleep with mommy or daddy. This book makes me feel all warm and fuzzy every time I read it. The illustrations are very sweet.

5 out of 5 stars My 3-year-old's favorite.......2005-08-14

I stumbled on this book at a remainder sale last year, and I think it is the best bedtime book we have ever had. My daughter always asks for the bunnies book at bedtime. It has cute illustrations of animal mommies and daddies putting their babies to sleep, with rhymes about each one. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Bedtime animals for single parents and lightbulbs.......2005-01-18

Apparently written for single parents, this bedtime story shows single animals putting their offspring to sleep. Despite the lightbulb-headed, look-alike animal illustrations, my two year old loves this book and it's been a favorite of his for almost a year. I like it because it doesn't tire me out; all of the illustrations span two pages, so this 24-page book reads more like a 12-pager. (Those of you who love your child more than 12 pages worth might consider the 72 page Green Eggs and Ham as an alternative). London-based author/illustrator Dawn Apperley has illustrated dozens of children's books. To find a title you may have missed on Amazon, search also under the misspelled "Dawn Apperly."

5 out of 5 stars Awsome bedtime story.......2004-07-23

I have two toddlers and they just love this story. They love to try to say the different animals names and colorfull pictures. I think the rhymes are great too. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Bedtime Story!.......2004-02-13

I bought this for my 2yr old and he absolutely loves it! The story is about different animals settling their little ones down for the night. The illustrations and the text are wonderful. Overall, the book is very soothing and a perfect "last book" at bedtime. When my son is ready to go to bed, he lets me know by saying "Night Night Little Bunnies" and going to get this book off his bookshelf, ready for storytime! We have quite a collection of good children's books, but this is one of the very best for bedtime reading.

Children fold back the flaps and catch a glimpse of the elusive tiger-heron, or one of eleven other intriguing species highlighted in this poetic celebration of the beauty, wonder and variety of birds. Each bird is introduced through a simple couplet accompanied by lush illustrations. The artwork reflects the sights, sounds and smells of rain forest, tundra, ocean and desert habitats. Rich colors, lavish landscapes and unique avian characters make this a title both children and parents will want to explore again and again.

4 out of 5 stars lots of good questions and answers for inquisitive minds.......2007-08-28

Teaching about a variety of birds through rhyme and great illustrations is what this book does quite well. It has a lift the flap format that keeps readers involved and interested. The illustrations are colorful, detailed, and quite lovely. The questions, answers, and interactive format will appeal to many young readers, particularly children 4-7.

5 out of 5 stars Finalist, Animal Behavior Society Children's Book Award.......2003-10-28

Review by Dr. Becky Talyn, UC Riverside and Cal State San Bernardino

Rhyming lyrics and detailed illustrations make Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night a delightful bedtime story, especially for young children. Each page asks a clever question about a particular type of bird; then when you open the flap, an interesting tidbit of behavior is revealed in answer. Children who reviewed Tiger-Heron particularly liked seeing the habitats of the birds in the illustrations, the scenes reveled by opening the pages, and learning more about birds. Older children also liked the last page of the book, which provides more information about each of the twelve bird species that appeared earlier in the book, and younger children enjoyed the question and answer rhyming.

Walk Into the Night is an amazing book that has a spirit of its own. It's a heart-wrenching story about a Comanche Indian woman and her discovery of love from an unsuspected character. This book is beautifully written, and a story you will never forget. I was sad when the book ended, I wanted to keep reading or be able to discover this story all over again. Enjoy it!

Book Description

On a tiny island off the coast of Iceland, Halla and her friends wait with anticipation. Every spring, millions of puffins, the clowns of the sea, return to nest, lay eggs, and raise their chicks to pufflings. That means Halla and her friends will be busy in August when the pufflings venture out at night to take their first flight. Then, all of the children stay out all night, too. During the nights of the pufflings they rescue thousands of stranded young birds, and in the daytime set them safely free at the beach. In Nights of the Pufflings, Bruce McMillan captures the unique and endearing story of an island tradition.

I like this book because it was talking about pufflings and they are good pufflings

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book! .......2004-09-05

My family loved this book! Last September, we visited the Westmann Islands and experienced the thrill of releasing the baby pufflings to the sea. It was such fun to read this book later and see the very beach where we'd released our pufflings. Bruce McMillan's book and photos capture the magic of this annual event in a delightful way.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2003-01-22

My daughter gave a presentation on Puffins for her 3rd grade class. This was an inspirational book for her. She was able to connect with the puffings and feel strongly about their plight. That enabled her to really get excited about her report. The pictures are beautiful and moving. It has some facts, although she used other sources for the bulk of her information. This book brings the real world to a child's level of understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Love it...........2002-08-23

We have loved this book for years now, and I wish it was easier to get. I wanted to get a copy for each of my children as we just experienced the Night of the Pufflings ourselves, but it must be out of print. Bruce McMillan has managed to capture the event so realistically that we in fact used his book as a "how to" manual of sorts. He describes everything from how the children capture the pufflings to how and where they are released. It gives children - anywhere in the world - a wonderful look into how other children live! We also like, how he incorporated Icelandic words (and their pronounciations) into the book. A wonderfully written and illustrated book!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and inspiring.......1999-01-28

This is one of the loveliest children's books I've ever read -- not only because the photographs are so stunning -- gorgeously reproduced, and in turns beautiful, humorous, charming, or downright cute -- but also because it shows children working together to take care of the natural world. Really, really wonderful -- don't miss it.

Book Description

Moira Kelly has come home to Boston to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with family and friends. The last thing she expects to find in the family pub is the undercurrent of danger as talk turns to politics. But all too quickly Moira finds herself struggling with the anger of her old flame. Dan O'Hara, and the convictions of her new love, Michael McLean. Torn between them, she becomes a pawn in a conspiracy that promises to bring the violence and hatred of a different time and place to her own backyard.

This passionate, close-knit community is harboring a traitor. And as the chilling acts of evil unfold around her, Moira must face the fact that a generation of time is not long enough to soften revenge.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Night of the Blackbird.......2006-11-06

I finished reading the book, but I was not that impressed with this one. The plot and the characters were not that interesting. I have read 5 of her books so far, and I loved the other 4.

3 out of 5 stars Way too political.......2006-10-23

Moira Kelly gets a guilt ridden phone call from her mother begging her to come back to Boston for St. Patrick's Day. For the very Irish Kelly family, this holiday is even more important than Christmas. Knowing that her father's health is failing and wanting to please her mother, Moira decides to change her plans to film her travel show in Florida, to a full look at St. Patrick's day celebrations in Boston.
Unfortunately, her visit is not a pleasant event. Dan O'Hara broke her heart some years ago, but he is back and ready to make a change. Moira has already moved on with the gorgeous Michael, whom she works with and who dotes on her lovingly.
Something is going on in her family's pub. The politics of Ireland are now in full force and someone among her is planning an assasination. The one person who knows anything mysteriously dies and Moira is left to suspect the one man she has loved nearly her whole life. Not knowing who to trust, Moira does some investigating of her own to find the killer, but what will it cost her?

This romantic suspense/mystery was a little more political than I enjoyed. The issues seemed to drone on about the Irish issues as if reading a text book concerning the continuing conflicts surrounding the dividing of Ireland.
Even with a number of red herrings, the plot was fairly predictable. Even the romance was not up to other Heather Graham novels.

Is it worth buying?
Unless you are very interested in Irish politics, the average reader may find this novel to be more wordy than it is suspenseful. Therefore, I do not recommend paying full price for Night of the Blackbird.

3 out of 5 stars Decent suspense novel, not much understanding for the issues.......2004-02-10

Ms. Graham writes very engrossing suspense novels and this one is no exception. The characters are well developed and the story line full of twists and turns. She just doesn't have a real feel for the ethnicity of the characters, or so I feel. In spite of claims by some of the characters that they are not, she paints the Irish as revolutionaries to a man, most of them violent. Other than that, I recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Suspense!.......2003-09-14

This was a great book. I have never heard of this author, but she really came through. I would have never picked up this book because of the political nature of it, but it doesn't overwhelm the book too much. A great love story and shocker at the end!

1 out of 5 stars Save Yourself the Trouble!.......2002-03-30

Although the introduction was quite promising, the rest of the book left much to be desired, like an interesting plot, developed characters, and other trivial matters.

This book reads like a dumbed-down mystery (think "Mystery for Romance Fans 101"), and the plot crawls along oh-so-painfully. The first half is spent detailing just HOW Irish the Kelly family is: multiple renditions of the song "Danny Boy," the truth and the fairy tale of St. Patrick, Irish politics, leprechauns, banshees, fairies, etc. In fact, everyone would be content to be coated in green paint, except for the heroine, who cannot let a day go by, without insisting that she's American and not Irish. No insight is given as to WHY she feels the need to make such a distinction, although an embarrassing childhood episode might have helped to give the character SOME dimension.

Save yourself the trouble and pick up one of her historical romances. Mystery is NOT where this author's talents lie.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Compilation.......2000-06-20

A more suitable compilation than this will not be found. These three plays are arguably the essential core of the Williams canon, and certainly a great starting place for novices.

Sweey Bird of Youth is blessed with perhaps the finest epitaph ever in a modern drama, when the play's main character emanates Williams's legendary compassion with the concluding line, "all I ask is for the recognition of me in you, and time, the enemy, in us all." Shakespeare would have salivated.

Both the Rose Tattoo and Night of the Iguana exhibit Ibsen's impression upon Williams, as Williams incorporates brilliant metaphor's that wrap around both plays like knotted ribbons, but Williams's poetic language in each surpasses that of Ibsen by eons. Much in the vein of Ibsen's The Wild Duck or Chekov's The Seagull, Williams gives us a lesson in fate, freedom and human desire with his Iguana, tied to a post by a rope and struggling to escape, waiting to be killed as food, and he walks us through a world of intense nostalgia and heartbreak with the Rose Tattoo marking the chests of Serafina's lovers.

Even O'Neil, lauded by most as our finest American playwright, never quite matched the powerful language of the heart that saturates these three works of gritty, raw desire and nostalgia. Both of which, as Williams insists, take up plenty of space in the hearts of all.
