Book Description

"The book you are about to read will arm you with the knowledge you need to defend your network from attackers—both the obvious and the not so obvious....If you are new to network security, don't put this book back on the shelf! This is a great book for beginners and I wish I had access to it many years ago. If you've learned the basics of TCP/IP protocols and run an open source or commercial IDS, you may be asking 'What's next?' If so, this book is for you."

—Ron Gula, founder and CTO, Tenable Network Security, from the Foreword "Richard Bejtlich has a good perspective on Internet security—one that is orderly and practical at the same time. He keeps readers grounded and addresses the fundamentals in an accessible way."

—Marcus Ranum, TruSecure "This book is not about security or network monitoring: It's about both, and in reality these are two aspects of the same problem. You can easily find people who are security experts or network monitors, but this book explains how to master both topics."

—Luca Deri, ntop.org "This book will enable security professionals of all skill sets to improve their understanding of what it takes to set up, maintain, and utilize a successful network intrusion detection strategy."

—Kirby Kuehl, Cisco Systems Every network can be compromised. There are too many systems, offering too many services, running too many flawed applications. No amount of careful coding, patch management, or access control can keep out every attacker. If prevention eventually fails, how do you prepare for the intrusions that will eventually happen? Network security monitoring (NSM) equips security staff to deal with the inevitable consequences of too few resources and too many responsibilities. NSM collects the data needed to generate better assessment, detection, and response processes—resulting in decreased impact from unauthorized activities. In The Tao of Network Security Monitoring, Richard Bejtlich explores the products, people, and processes that implement the NSM model. By focusing on case studies and the application of open source tools, he helps you gain hands-on knowledge of how to better defend networks and how to mitigate damage from security incidents. Inside, you will find in-depth information on the following areas. The NSM operational framework and deployment considerations. How to use a variety of open-source tools—including Sguil, Argus, and Ethereal—to mine network traffic for full content, session, statistical, and alert data. Best practices for conducting emergency NSM in an incident response scenario, evaluating monitoring vendors, and deploying an NSM architecture. Developing and applying knowledge of weapons, tactics, telecommunications, system administration, scripting, and programming for NSM. The best tools for generating arbitrary packets, exploiting flaws, manipulating traffic, and conducting reconnaissance. Whether you are new to network intrusion detection and incident response, or a computer-security veteran, this book will enable you to quickly develop and apply the skills needed to detect, prevent, and respond to new and emerging threats.

5 out of 5 stars Jump into NSM.......2007-06-13

This book is a great introduction to the world of NSM (Network Security Monitoring). The basic idea is that security defenses will fail at some point and that to realistically improve the security posture of an organization NSM is needed.

The book starts with an introduction to risk analysis. It then describes how to build an NSM platform using open source tools, FreeBSD, and network taps / SPAN ports. It also includes some case studies and a lot of material on the operational aspects of running a NSM team.

I really like Richard's style such as his footnotes with related papers.

Be sure to check out the author's blog at http://taosecurity.blogspot.com/.

Cuts right to the chase. Worthy addition to any serious network security library.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to learn the Art of Network Monitoring!.......2006-02-07

I am not sure how I was first introduced to the author, Mr. Bejtlich. I cannot remember if I first noticed his work via his excellent blog or this, his first book. Either way, after reading "The Tao of Network Security" by Richard Bejtlich, I feel he has prepared and educated me in a way unlike any other author. The first item you must recognize is the tone that this book dictates right from the outset. The book begins by citing many different authors, their books and their value. I knew immediately that I was in for a treat. And I was right!

I will not attempt to offer a full review as I feel one can gather from other reviews the value of this book. The book is basically broken up into 5 sections. The first 100 pages is an intro to Network Security Monitoring (NSM). The second part is dedicated to the different ways to monitor - I particularly like (and agree) with how the author broke up the different ways of cataloguing NSM - full content, session, and alert. The third section describers NSM processes and the fourth section describes NSM people.

The book, overall, is a superb resource. Not a page goes by without some screenshots of TCPDump, UNIX configs or diagrams. I have heard others' mention they have been given this book to read in their classroom study and I can see why.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:

5 out of 5 stars Shows a disciplined approach to network security monitoring .......2005-05-29

A problem with the approach many people take to network and security monitoring is that they expect it to be plug and play. Install the software and then stop attackers in their tracks. If only it was so easy. But one can't simply install monitoring software or an IDS, collect data and expect it all to correlate and correct itself.

The beauty of The Tao of Network Security Monitoring : Beyond Intrusion Detection is that it shows how network monitoring requires a strong discipline to truly have an effect on security.

The book is written for the person; primarily a system administrator or security engineer whom truly wants to use an IDS to manage and secure their network. This is not an introductory text, rather it is written for someone not scared of downloading and compiling code. If you are looking for an intro to IDS usage, this is not the book for you. This is a book about someone who has an IDS, and needs to find a way to use it and tune it for maximum usage.

The book has a near endless supply of network traffic capture and analysis tools, techniques and network topologies. Beyond simply providing a list of software tools, the book shows how to install and configure a variety of these tools. Rather than wasting pages and screen shots detailing how to download and install the software mentioned; the book shows how to use the tool in the context or Tao of security monitoring.

In addition, the author emphasizes the point that the people are a crucial aspect of effective network monitoring. The ultimate success of any IDS is directly tied to the analyst behind the console. They are the ones making the decision on how to respond to an incident, and if they are not appropriately trained, all of the hardware and software will only provide a fraction of it potential.

With that, The Tao of Network Security Monitoring should be considered required reading for anyone using an IDS or responsible for its use. If you have staff using an IDS, ensure that they have read The Tao of Network Security Monitoring as it will educate them in truly understanding how to monitor a network.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2005-02-21

This book has everyting as it pertains to network security monitoring. If you read this book from cover-to-cover, then you can consider yourself prepared to deal with anything that comes at you. This book presents material that would normally take years to learn in an easy-to-follow format. This book is a must have for anyone who is serious about their job and wants to make the jump to becoming an expert.

This superior text on computer security is extremely rich in information, based on experience, and a pleasure to read. In addition, the author is donating part of his royalties from this book to various charities--initially, a foundation that fights child abuse.

Escamilla begins by exploring intrusion prevention systems--firewalls, user authentication routines, and access controls--and telling how to properly set up such systems. He then describes mechanisms that identify and minimize damage caused by electronic break-ins once they occur. The author covers both system-level and network-level intrusion-detection systems, describing tools that attempt to catch not only outsiders who have broken in, but also legitimate system users who are up to no good.

Escamilla details several anti-intruder tools, including packet sniffers and vulnerability scanners. He describes a lot of Unix hacks and tells what you can do to prevent them from taking place on your systems. Other chapters focus on intrusions in Windows NT environments and what to do when your system is under attack. Escamilla closes with references to other sources. --David Wall

1 out of 5 stars Buy the Northcutt book instead.......2000-01-30

This is just not a useful book. Half of the book is not about intrusion detection at all--it consists of an uninspiring general introduction to computer security.

The author apparently has no actual experience in the subject. It is filled with innaccuracies. Confusing 'hash value' with 'digital signature' is a common rookie mistake, but it is typical of the inexcusable lack of precision in this text.

Besides being misleading, off-subject, and out-of-date, it is deadly boring. If you want a hands-on book, get the Northcutt text. If you want an academic and useful theoretical approach, get Amoroso's book. If you want an introductory text on information security, why would you buy a book on IDS?

It is apparent that Wiley badly wanted to publish a book on intrusion detection, and the author was all too willing to squeeze his existing square peg of a security text into an ill-fitting IDS round hole.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the name of the book........1999-10-20

Look for somewhere else if you are serious about network security. The content of the whole book is just too superficial !

1 out of 5 stars Jarringly unfocussed and inaccurate..........1999-08-13

I wanted to like this book, seeing as how I've made intrusion detection an important part of my career (the book spends a few pages discussing a paper I wrote), and there are no good offline resources on the subject. Unfortunately, I found little to appreciate in this book, which could have benefited greatly from better technical editing, a sharper concept of what its audience is, and (unfortunately) a better grounding in the subject matter.

The most important problem with this book will be obvious to most readers. Escamilla doesn't address the subject of intrusion detection until midway through the book, opting instead to fill the first half of the book with background information about computer security. This information is presented poorly (and with glaring inaccuracies). Almost all of it is covered better in other books, which readers unfamiliar with network security will need to buy anyways to make the intrusion detection concepts discussed in the latter half of the book accessible.

Unfortunately, the relevant half of the book isn't much better. A confused mish-mash of technologies are presented under the banner of I-D (I know of very few people in the security industry who consider security scanners to be I-D systems), and the most widely used forms of I-D are given scant coverage.

Worse still, the author profiles real commercial I-D systems (towards the end of the book). Apart from the fact that this information was unsalvageably outdated before the book made it to the press, it's also biased. Descriptions of one system span 3 pages, while another merits a single paragraph. Many important systems (which were widely known at the time of this book's release) are not covered at all. And, predictably, most of the details about the commercial systems covered read like marketing material, with almost no comparisons to the other systems covered.

Although this book is a mess, it's not an unrecoverable one. The authors descriptions of Do-It-Yourself intrusion detection on Unix systems is competant, if not revolutionary, and is almost reminiscent of Cheswick and Bellovin's work in _Firewalls_and_Internet_Security_. A better informed, more coherent second revision of this book would be worth looking at.

Unfortunately, there's very little to recommend this book. A critical and informed reader might get some value out of it, but nothing that couldn't be obtained more easily from the Internet. At its worst, however, this book can be misleading, and is thus an inappropriate introduction to its subject. Overall, a deeply flawed book. Steer clear.

1 out of 5 stars Rambling and fragmented - of little use to novice or expert.......1999-04-16

Computer security is a subject that one either loves or loathes. To the lover, it is a stimulating, intellectual challenge. To the loather, it is based on boring, complicated maths with the sole aim of preventing users doing their job.

In such a world, any author of a book needs to decide whether to write their work at the techies, thus jumping straight in at the deep end, or the novice, offering a gentle primer that attracts the reader into the subject. The very best computer security books (Schneier; Stoll; Garfinkel and Spafford) have clearly attacked one path. The worst have headed off somewhere in between.

Escamilla has chosen the latter - with the usual, dire consequences. Aimed at `any computer literate person' the book is notionally divided into two parts, one to introduce basic concepts of computer security, and another to describe intrusion detection systems. However, neither part meets it aim. The first occupies more than 150 rambling and often inaccurate pages. Moreover, it strays into territory well beyond `any' person. For instance, ten pages are devoted to the Kerberos authentication protocol. Indeed, so long is the `introduction' that the author, almost apologetically, has to keep reminding the user that the book is about intrusion detection.

The second part fares little better. It forages around scanners, network sniffers, covert channels, Unix and NT adminstration, again under the apologetic guise of intrusion detection. Some intrusion detection systems are described - RealSecure, NetRanger and so on - but in a brief and fragmented manner, which offers little in the way of practical, consumer guidance. Possibly the worst aspect of the treatment is that no coverage is given to what a typical audit log looks like - which would at least help justify why intrusion detection systems are needed.

The most useful piece of advice offered in the book is not to consider buying an intrusion detection system if you haven't invested in more basic tools like a firewall. The most useful piece of advice that can be offered about the book is not to consider buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable help to the data security professional........1999-04-08

This is a book with a lot of content, capable to give valuable help to the data security professional. As often happens today, the title is somehow misleading, being in this case reductive in relation with the actual content. In fact, the first of the three parts the book is made of (half of the total 348 pages) is a good recap of traditional protection models. Identification, authentication, access control and auditing are covered, both conceptually and with reference to market available tools. The idea is to let the reader have a sound grasp of traditional devices before showing, in the second and third part, how Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are a complementary must to the traditional protection models. Both UNIX (various flavours) and NT operating systems are taken in account. The second part introduces IDS both working philosophy and practical usage. They are divided in three main categories: vulnerability assessment scanners, system level devices and network sniffers. Also in this case UNIX and NT scenarios are considered and several market leader tools are devised with a certain detail. Integration of IDS with traditional security functions (discussed in part 1) is covered. Despite all your accuracy in deploying a protection system (including IDS), you could be hit! The third part of the book introduces you in the incidents handling phase of the story, giving you advises about what to do and not to do in such not desirable event.

Book Description

A touching, tender and at times funny account of a woman's struggle for stature in a 4 foot 8 1/2 inch tall body, Beyond Measure speaks to the heart of soul-breaking attempts to fit an arbitrary and elusive cultural ideal of physical perfection. Being short isn't the problem, Ellen Frankel insists. Instead, the real difficulties lie in the social bias against short people. Ellen shares the difficulties of living short in a world in which stereotypes are based on gender and size. She moves beyond her own experience into the political realm in revealing how pharmaceutical companies--with government backing--are expanding the market for human growth hormone treatment by reclassifying healthy short children as patients in "need" of such injections in hopes of making them taller. She shares the dilemma of being subjected to simultaneous messages that her physical body should be bigger--that is, taller, but not wider--while her expansive spiritual body should be smaller. As a result of too much attention on the external rather than the internal workings of the soul, Ellen flirts with eating disorders and unhealthy relationships with powerful males in an attempt to compensate for her feelings of not "measuring up." In the process, her real self slips farther away. The path out of her dilemma lies in the shadow of the tallest mountain on Earth. It is through a spiritual pilgrimage to Nepal that Ellen discovers her own strength and spirit, and that we are all dwarfed by Everest and beyond measure.

5 out of 5 stars life is short.......2007-10-01

On the first page of her memoir, Ellen Frankel takes us to the moment at an arts festival when her eyes meet another "member of the club": someone whose eyes are on a level with hers, someone who "knows" what it's like to be always looking up at others. Frankel, at four feet eight inches, is one of the shortest in any crowd. This book is the story of her journey to overcome the heartache caused by our culture literally and emotionally "looking down on" short people.

Frankel has appeared on CNN, Fox News and in the Associated Press, speaking about her mission to expose size discrimination: the unequal treatment of people because of their height or weight. She is particularly passionate about government approval of hormone shots for healthy children, just because they fall below the curve of what is "normal" height for their age.

The book cites numerous articles and studies on the ways people try to "fit in" by altering their body image. Besides the emotional damage done to short children through unthinking jokes and pats on the head, there is the health risk of synthetic hormone injections which increase height by only an inch or two at most.

Interspersed with the scientific data is the personal. As a girl, Frankel thinks about being a rabbi, but her rabbi laughs at her, saying she is too short and would never reach the pulpit. She is drawn to study Buddhism and integrates that philosophy with her Jewish identity in a graceful manner.

Her sense of humor and self-acceptance are evident in the title of chapter eight: Life is Short and So Am I. She tries to be a bubbly, cute (and short) female but does not feel her own power until she sheds that persona.

"I knew my Achilles heel and how it craved a stiletto," says Frankel. She fells into relationships with tall, important men to feel seen, "special" and powerful. But she knows deep inside that only by speaking her truth and engaging in activities that nourish her will she grow strong.

The journey that is central to the book begins when Frankel and her husband watch the Everest IMAX movie. At first, her husband is reluctant to leave his job for two weeks and go to Nepal, but she convinces him there is never a better time than now. They visit Kathmandu and the Himalayas, Buddhist shrines and death-defying roads alongside cliffs.

Frankel's vivid descriptions of the people and the villages of Nepal are my favorite part of the book. A year later, she returns, this time to climb Everest with a group of fifteen people.

She takes us along as she listens to the soundtrack CD from the Everest film while climbing to a Buddhist monastery at 13,000 feet up the highest peak in the world.

On this return trip, she travels with a married woman who is having an affair and also has an eating disorder. Overly focused on her thinness, the woman uses laxatives frequently to combat "bloating." During the trek, she confides that she is sleeping with their married Sherpa guide.

Frankel spent ten years as a counselor in practice for eating disorders, treating "Women who fought with their bodies because the culture told them their bodies were their enemies--unless their bodies were tall and thin, then they were their best friends."

"You don't have to have an affair with someone who climbed Mount Everest", she tells her traveling companion. "...you can climb yourself. You don't have to live vicariously, offering your body to a man living out your own dreams."

Frankel knows these words are meant for her, too. "I grew into myself" on the trek, she tells us. She realizes she can be strong and confident while short, that these qualities are not determined by one's physical size, because, "We are all both dwarfed by Everest and beyond measure."

This book reminded me of why it's so much more fulfilling to follow our hearts and go after our dreams. I've known too many women who "could have" been and done things but let their fears and other people's expectations discourage them.

Frankel's children have learned by her example to be who they are without reservation. Her book can teach us all to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging and informative memoir.......2007-04-17

Ellen Frankel's Beyond Measure is an engaging and informative book about confronting narrow societal definitions regarding acceptable body size and body image. At the book's onset, Frankel writes about being a short woman in a culture that values tall as the preferred norm. She cites research and delineates how societal prejudices work to dismantle self-esteem in short children and to undermine the confidence and self-worth of short adults. She connects the dots between height-ism and fat-phobia in a culture that denigrates difference. Ultimately Frankel's message is that the truest measure of one's worth lies not in one's outer stature but in one's inner strength. She implores each of us to take up space in the world in spite of society's narrow definitions of what is `right' and `true' and `normal.' And to celebrate human diversity--in all its shapes, sizes, and permutations--without apology.

5 out of 5 stars A Memoir with an Important Message.......2007-01-23

Our world can be cruel and confusing to those look a little different, and it was somewhat difficult for the author growing up. But Ellen Frankel has learned how to adapt and live confidently in her body despite the taunting words of those who are taller. In this touching and informative memoir, Ellen Frankel skillfully illustrates the pressures on so many people who will go to any length simply to "fit in." She reveals her opposition to the unnatural and dangerous attempts to expand height through the use of growth hormones, offering hard scientific data about their negative impact. Ellen explains how "innocent" remarks about height can be hurtful and even takes readers with her on an exciting spiritual trek to Mount Everest. "Beyond Measure" is an excellent book, sure to make us think about the stuff that really matters...that which resides within us.

Thanks for sending me an advanced copy of your book, "Beyond Measure." I just finished reading it today. Words cannot adequately express how happy I am to see the issue of heightism addressed in this way. In your book you clearly explain the realities of this social prejudice. You provide painful examples from your own life, which even the harshest of our critics cannot deny or trivialize. Most importantly, you provide words of inspiration. Words to wake the souls of all who have the good fortune to read it. I am so impressed by your strength and your courage. I will recommend this book to anyone. Thank you for writing "Beyond Measure." You have done not only short statured people, but humanity as a whole, a great service.

5 out of 5 stars So, who are you?.......2006-12-09

Ellen Frankel answers this question by opening herself up for all to see - her strengths, her misgivings, her intense passion to live outside the tidy box people have tried to pressure her into and her emergence as a strong, centered woman who has powerfully conquered both the internal and external conflicts each of us battle daily. Ellen teaches us to be true to and believe in ourselves and our dreams regardless of how others may view them. Everyone can take a page from Ellen's book and learn to trust themselves and their visions and make their dreams a reality. You will find yourself asking - who am I? What so-called societal norms am I allowing myself to be held back by? What can I do to realize my passions and live without regret? Ellen, thank you for helping me look inside myself for these answers and hopefully allowing me to live Beyond Measure.

    Book Description

The notion of uniform hyperbolicity, introduced by Steve Smale in the early sixties, unified important developments and led to a remarkably successful theory for a large class of systems: uniformly hyperbolic systems often exhibit complicated evolution which, nevertheless, is now rather well understood, both geometrically and statistically.

Another revolution has been taking place in the last couple of decades, as one tries to build a global theory for "most" dynamical systems, recovering as much as possible of the conclusions of the uniformly hyperbolic case, in great generality.

This book aims to put such recent developments in a unified perspective, and to point out open problems and likely directions for further progress. It is aimed at researchers, both young and senior, willing to get a quick, yet broad, view of this part of dynamics. Main ideas, methods, and results are discussed, at variable degrees of depth, with references to the original works for details and complementary information.

      Book Description

Readers will learn to understand and experience the extraordinary goodness of God!

Gloria Copeland believes that far too many people-even Christian believers-are living with far too little of God's provision for them. Why? For the simple reason that they've never discovered the true nature of God.

By tracing God's goodness throughout the entire Bible, she demonstrates to readers that because of God's great love for them, they can receive salvation and so much more-healing, deliverance, peace, blessings, and every other good thing God has promised in His Word.

Copeland goes on to show the keys to receiving these blessings, beginning with the first step of discovering and embracing God's true nature of goodness and kindness toward His children-not the all-too-pervasive image of an angry and condemning God.

This will be one of the most important books of the year to help Christian's grow spiritually and experience God's absolute best for them.

When things seem down and out and you don't know where to turn, pick up a copy of BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE by Gloria Copeland. This book will be your inspirational cheerleader to remind you of God's awesome goodness. From Genesis to Revelation, this book is chock full of reminders relating to God's wonderfulness. The first step in recognizing God's potential is accepting Him as your personal Lord and Savior. By understanding the truth of the words in the Bible and believing in the goodness of God is the foundation of our faith, Mrs. Copeland states, "He will restore wholeness in your life, spirit, soul and body." She cites Psalm 84 which tells us that "No good thing will be withheld from those who walk uprightly."

The book is laced with metaphorical encouragement that just prompts the reader to be enlightened and renewed. One passage that stuck with me was "Feed your heart with the goodness of God." Here, Ms. Copeland is urging readers to not only trust God for eternal salvation but challenges us to see the daily goodness of God in the land of the living. He is a redeemer, a conqueror, and all in all, He is love! BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE reminds us that God will fulfill our desires, and by having faith, God will bless us and provide deliverance just like he did for Israel.

This book is filled with positivity and has an upbeat vibe that is undeniable! If during your Christian walk, you're looking for some solid reinforcement and reassuring direction, look no further. BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE is written in a flowing manner that is easy to understand yet filled with wonderful insight.

Many churches focus on how to be saved, but teach little about prosperity, healing, living a victorious Christian life, and how to live joyfully. Many people base their ideas about their heavenly Father by their earthly father which provides only a distorted view of God. If their earthly father was harsh, they see Jesus as unloving and unforgiving. If their earthly father was kind and gentle, they see Jesus like their earthly father kind, but full of mistakes. Jesus is like neither of these. Gloria Copeland takes us through the Bible quoting many verses simply, so a child can easily understand who we are in Christ and who Jesus really is and what he stands for. I encourage everyone to read this book. It contains the truth about God's love and the good things he wants to give all of us if we will just receive them As a certified Biblical Counselor, I am using this book with the Bible to help others see who Jesus really is.

"I have not said...Seek me in vain. I the Lord speak the truth; I declare what is right." Isaiah 45:10

All of the Goodness of God described in the Holy Scriptures of the Bible is for You and me today. Healing, freedom, protection, and prospertiy is for you. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Gloria Copeland gently leads her readers from the very basic truth that understanding God's Goodness is the foundation of our faith. As you progress through each chapter Gloria takes the reader through the scriptures where the goodness of God is declared.

It is hard not to get excited when you discover that God has blessings stored up for you, that God has a good place and a good plan for your life. And, it is not too late to get started.

As I read through Gloria's book, I kept asking myself, how do I experience ALL of God's goodness? I was not disappointed to find there is a chapter called "The Key to Heaven's Storehouse."

My friend, God is looking for a "Receiver."

"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him." 2 Chronicles 16:9

Don't let the word "perfect" throw you off the track. The word that is translated "perfect" in this passage actually means "devoted, faithful, dedicated, loyal and consecrated."

Baby steps. Begin with receiving the gift of salvation. As you learn to trust his goodness, the more he will show his goodness and strength on your behalf.

Get the full picture. Read this book. Let Gloria Copeland minister to you as she leads you through scripture and be challenged to receive the Goodness of God in Your life.

      Book Description

Waste has plagued almost every industrial-age firm for the past century. In this powerfully argued alternative to conventional cost management thinking, experts H. Thomas Johnson and Anders Bröms assert that any company can avoid the waste that is generated through excessive operating costs in the short run and excessive losses from market instability in the long run. To gain more secure levels of profitability, management must simply change how it thinks about work and how it organizes work.

Profit Beyond Measure details how two extremely profitable manufacturers, Toyota and the Swedish truck maker Scania, have rejected the traditional mechanistic mindset of managing by results that generates waste. Johnson and Broms explain how Toyota and Scania achieve their legendary cost advantage through a revolutionary concept they call managing by means (MBM). Instead of being driven to meet preconceived accounting targets, the production systems of Toyota and Scania are governed by the three precepts that guide all living systems: self-organization, interdependence, and diversity.

Amid a wealth of new insights into Toyota's vaunted system, Johnson and Bröms introduce the tools of MBM to show how design, production, and profitability analysis are done to customer order. They demonstrate that by following the principles that emulate life systems, even a lean and profitable company can organize work to greatly lessen its long-term earnings instability and sharply reduce its short-run operating costs.

Scania has achieved sixty-five years of financial stability and longevity in the face of fierce competition. Toyota has amassed a market value since 1988 that has rivaled -- or sometimes surpassed -- the American "Big Three" automakers combined. The principles that Johnson and Bröms set forth in Profit Beyond Measure can guarantee the same richer, longer life to any company that applies them.

From my blog(which is why it is written this way)

I finished reading "Profit Beyond Measure" subtitled "Extraordinary Results through Attention to Work and People" by Johnson and Broms. Good book. I have learned many things at SYNNEX. One of the great learnings is attention to detailed numbers and cost accounting. This has tremendous value and the SYNNEX system is truly awesome on granular numbers. This book reinforces the need for good cost accounting systems as long as they are logical. A lot of the book is about having the right systems. As a Systems Design Engineer, I really appreciate the books attention to systems and interdependence. Part of the problem with measuring is that interrelations are often overlooked.

A part of me at times feels that sometimes we are not totally on the right track though. Profit Beyond Measure reinforces what I already know about intuition. It will help me hold firm in areas where I know in my heart we are right to change (or not). Some of it comes back to my continual short term vs. long term dilemma.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Johnson, financial heretic!.......2001-04-14

Comments on Profit Beyond Measure by Tom Johnson:

Tom Johnson's overview of business thinking is astoundingly clear, the beginning of the revolution that Dr. W. Edwards Deming demanded for so many years.

The Toyota story is told beautifully in chapter 3; now I begin to understand what happens in that Kentucky facility.

Chapter 4 is the weakness of the book; there is no there there. The Scania "secret" is not in the same universe as that at Toyota. What more evidence do we need than the sale of the company?

Chapter 5 is fascinating. Tom Johnson the heretic! A modern day Martin Luther! No one on Wall Street will want to know about orderline analysis. However, if those using it prosper...

The stock market vanish? That is precisely what will happen if Tom Johnson's thinking catches on. And that can't happen too soon. It may already be too late to preserve our culture as we know it. But then, it may be time.

Most in business will not want to hear the last two chapters. But no one wants to hear that they have cancer either, right? This patient (the world economy) has cancer, and no one knows if survival is possible.

I can't wait for the next iteration of this "stuff." The books that Johnson (and a few others, like Dr. Ed Baker) are going to write could make all the difference in our future. Dr. Norman Borlaug and his cohorts are trying to feed the world in spite of potentially deadly water shortages; Johnson and a few like-minded intellectuals are trying to feed the world correct thinking in spite of potentially deadly shortsightedness.

5 out of 5 stars The Book the Business World Has Been Waiting for.......2001-01-19

Since the day Amazon delivered my copy of Johnson and Broms' Profit Beyond Measure,I have taken delight with every page. This book is a wonderfully brilliant, masterful book that may be the serious business book of this decade in the way Senge's Fifth Discipline was for the 1990's. Insightful writers such as Margeret Wheatley and Danah Zohar have artfully open our eyes to the potential of viewing organizations as naturally evolving living systems. Notwithstanding their powerful insights, the actual application of these ideas left a lot to the imagination as to how they would actually be applied. Johnson and Broms, however, provide the substance and put the meat on the bones of the many complexity and chaos theory books available today. Johnson and Broms tell us with precision and in entaintaining detail the stories of Toyota and Scania Truck and how, respectively, they have gone forty and sixty-sixty years without losing money---how, they manage by means, as part of living systems, not trying to orchestrate management by the results (a notion of believing that you can fix future events to happen within a management plan) as America's Big 3 auto companies have over the past century. Johnson and Broms take us inside of the Toyota and Scania plants and board rooms, helping us see how they produce only according to actual orders, how they design and set up assembly and modulated processes to avoid waste (not eliminate it, avoid it in the first place!), how they treat their employees, how they see customers and market and more. Drawing from the principles articulated by Gregory Bateson, Johnson and Bohms help us see the unique milieu and overriding philosophy and work culture that is reflective of an open, living system, that relies on "balanced, cyclical patterns of continuous flow of the work for every person in the organization." Before reading this book, I only had a vague notions of how chaos, complexity, and new science theories applied to the emerging organizations of today. As a result of reading this book, however, I believe I now can grasp what it means, in real and substantive terms, for an organization to exist, evolve, and succeed as part of living system. This is a book for the new century. Every business can learn from this book and those that don' will perish while Toyota, Scania, and others of this fabric will thrive in our increasingly complex and interdependent world. I recommend this book to any one interested in business theory, organizational development, or building a better organization. Tom Coens

      5 out of 5 stars 20th Century Manufacturing Illuminated.......2000-11-15

For manufacturers the 20th century was the story of Ford and Toyota. The story of the transition from mass production to lean production has been told many times, but often focusing on the techniques, not the strategy. Professor Johnson has developed a profound insight into the strategy behind Toyota's approach, framed as management by means, rather than management by results.

This is the most important insight into the Toyota Production System which has come my way in the last ten years. Johnson demonstrates why the Toyota Management by Means approach gives superior long term value to customers, shareholders and employees.

Profit without Measure is essential reading for any manufacturer building a strategy for World Class Manufacturing.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a vision of capitalism with heart.......2000-11-15

I've always found the notion that businesses should 'maximise profit' to be naive, but to come up with a better business rationale seems to get real messy, quickly.

This book uses some concepts that moved me when I read Fritjof Capra's 'The Web of Life', and applies them to effectively and realistically running a business in a competitive environment.

In integrating living systems concepts with management control issues, this is the most philosophically thoughtful book I've seen written by someone who understands accounting.

      Book Description

Quantum theory is one the most important and successful theories of modern physical science. It has been estimated that its principles form the basis for about 30 per cent of the world's manufacturing economy. This is all the more remarkable because quantum theory is a theory that nobody
understands. The meaning of Quantum Theory introduces science students to the theory's fundamental conceptual and philosophical problems, and the basis of its non-understandability. It does this with the barest minimum of jargon and very little mathematics in the main text. Readers wishing to delve
more deeply into the theory's mathematical subtleties can do so in an extended series of appendices. The book brings the reader up to date with the results of new experimental tests of quantum weirdness and reviews the latest thinking on alternative interpretations, the frontiers of quantum
cosmology, quantum gravity and potential application of this weirdness in computing, cryptography and teleportation.
