Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-02-24
This book is excellent. It gives step by step details as of to how the answers were achieved. Also, after each chapter there is a self test that you can take to boost your Organic Chem. IQ. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning Organic Chemistry.
Dr. Atkins is amazing!.......2006-06-16
This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry. I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back). Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
Absolutely fabulous!
Great Solutions Manuel.......2004-12-19
This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them. Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!
One of the better texts I had while in college.......2002-06-02
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry. Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts. Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters. End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful). Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization. I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them.
Much better than any other used.......1999-05-12
I have used this book in replacement of my organic chemistry class book. It's much more clear and easy to learn. However, it would be nice if the book and answer book was not so expensive but it's worth to me.

Good with 1st edition.......2007-09-08
This study guide/solutions manual matches the first edition of Organic Chemistry. Questions have been changed, rearranged, and added in the second edition, and the guide isn't nearly as useful or easy to use with it.
Very well explained, to the point, and thorough. A must have for the textbook........2007-07-15
Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.
In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook.
This is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy. I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly. Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!
It's expensive, but it's worth the money if you use it properly. I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text.
Very Helpful.......2007-05-29
I love that the author basically gives you her own notes. She breaks everything down very well.
Book Description
Written by Robert C. Atkins and Francis A. Carey, the Solutions Manual provides step-by-step solutions guiding the student through the reasoning behind each problem in the text. There is also a self-test at the end of chapter designed to assess the student’s mastery of the material.
Customer Reviews:
The best solution manual.......2007-10-08
It is the best solution manual I've ever used. It has all the answers and test samples. It's best.
Product Description
This Student Solutions Manual, which provides complete solutions to all of the nearly 600 exercises in the accompanying textbook, will encourage students to work the exercises, enhancing their mastery of physical organic chemistry. When used properly by students to compare their solutions with the detailed solutions provided in the manual, it will serve as an excellent tool for sharpening skills and encouraging a deeper understanding of the concepts that are covered. Like the accompanying text by Anslyn and Dougherty, this manual also includes Going Deeper highlights on selected topics, where students can explore exceptions to the rule, discover surprising connections between topics, and gain insights into practical aspects of the material. Problem-solving strategies will be enhanced by students' coordinated use of the textbook and this manual.

Excellent book.......2007-10-09
This book is excellent. If you study Physical chemistry, you must have one. Most content in this book is quite new, that you can not find in other books.
I love it very much! Service in Amazon is very goog!
Slow shipping and handling.......2007-09-19
The book is in fine condition, I just had to wait longer than I have ever waited for a book in my life.
Excellent.......2007-01-04
The book arrived on time in a good shape as I hoped it to be. I'm very glad I choose to purchase book from the seller and I will highly recommend it.
Outstanding Text for Grad School.......2006-12-09
I completed my first semester of Physical Organic chemistry using this textbook and I am pleased beyond words. The book is very well written, yet sophisticated enough to help advance new graduate students like myself to the level that our Professors understand concepts at. The problems at the end of the chapter are very useful and the answer guide (sold seperately) explains them quite well.
The book is also binded very solidly. The other people in my research group keep this text on their lab bookshelfs for reference and I have no doubt that I will do the same.
The long wait is over..........2006-09-19
Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.
Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems. My wait is over; Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now, one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is the need of the day in today's era of collaborative research.

A fundamental approach to Organic Chemistry understanding!.......2005-11-03
This book adds interesting newness in its format. Its fascinating presentation and support of the color. Detailed and profuse description with accurate and precise exercises conform a very worthy and recommended text for all those students and teachers of this important branch of the knowledge.
Recommended without reserves.
Lots of Molecular Orbitals.......2004-06-29
This includes a lot of the physics behind organic chemistry. Streitweiser did a lot of pioneering work in the 50s calculating molecular orbitals so that aspect is very nicely covered. He discovered a lot of what is presented so it gives the book a sense of authority.
The writing has an appealing friendliness to it, like an older relative is taking you under their wing as an apprentice. Their are a few reminisences, such as the time they distilled an explosive peroxide and the resultant explosion moved furniture in nearby rooms it shook the building so much.
One of the Best but Intensive Texts.......2000-11-21
It might not have lush photos and graphics, yet this revised printing version of "Introduction to Organic Chemistry" remains one of the most authoritative text for introductory level.
Readers are assumed solid mastery of one year of general chemistry since the coverage on electronic structure and bonding is succinct. Readers should be able to draw Lewis dot structures and identify the major resonance structures from all resonance structures, etc.
Two separate chapters discuss respectively organic structures and chapter reactions, who incorporate the simple chemistry of alkanes (hydrocarbons). Stereoisomerism is introduced early in the text so students can grasp this important concept and the consequence on reactions, reactivity and distribution of products.
Discussion on nucleophilic substitution reaction is somewhat obscure that might requires a few readings in order to grasp the idea. Discussion on various functional groups (alkenes, alkynes, nitriles, ketones, enol, carboxylic acids, carboxylic derivatives) are very detailed and problems focus on multistep organic synthesis.
Information on spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, etc) might not be comparable to a text that devotes to these spectroscopy topics, but students will learn the gist and essence of using these techniques in determining organic structures.
What makes this text distinguish itself from others are the chapters on hetero atoms like phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. Another chapter is devoted to difunctional compounds which are siginificant intermediates and starting points for synthesis. Discussion on biological macromolecules like carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins are also included. Readers will also find the door to advanced topics such as aromatic halides, phenols, phenyl ethers, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and heterocyclic compounds.
Overall the information presented here is very detailed and geared toward advanced study and research. This is highly recommended for serious chemisty students. Excellent problems. Highly recommended.
Perfect Text and Reference for Chemists and Chem Students.......2000-07-20
This is a very hard-core and detailed treatment of the subject of organic chemistry. Ideal for chemistry majors, this book has served as a refresher for me as a professional chemist. The book assumed mastery over general chemistry and the prerequisites of chemical structure and bonding. Practice problems are only to help develop further insight and application of the chemistry presented.
Very clear and comprehensive.......2000-01-04
I used the 2nd Edition, 1981 for my undergraduate chemistry course. It had copious and well presented data on organic chemistry, as well as introductory material on spectroscopy and biochemistry. Presumably the newer editions are even better.
I ended up specialising in physical chemistry/spectroscopy rather than organic chemistry, but this is no reflection on this fine textbook.
