5 out of 5 stars Steppingstone to the Solar System.......2007-04-12

If you are interested in manned spaceflight and space stations, then this book is for you. It is an excellent overview of the current state of the ISS. The book is put together very well with excellent color photographs and diagrams that thoroughly explain the complicated workings of the International Space Station. Many interesting facts and data are contained in this book which will enlighten and entertain the reader. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars crowded quarters.......2007-03-13

Damn crowded! If you aspire to be an astronaut, you need to be a claustrophile. Despite the initial seemingly large size of the ISS, the many photos reveal it as very cramped. With equipment and people. Of course, this is a sheer necessity, given the high cost of lifting one kilo into orbit.

Several research labs are also shown. Like the Japan Experiment Module. Along with the Russian Progress module, for transporting materials to the ISS. All seem very promising for ultimately easing our way into space.

The book excels in giving many glimpses, in colour, of the ISS.

5 out of 5 stars The I.S.S. book you have been waiting for!.......2007-01-23

So here you are with maybe -at least two books about the Space Station in your collection, and each one has different configurations of how the modules look and you aren't even sure how they fit together?

Well fire the retros and land on this one.

Gary Kitmacher has put the latest information together and produced a GREAT book about how this International effort comes together.
Kitmacher, a modelmaker himself hasn't forgotten those of us that use glue - he has illustrated this with the best artwork one can find without using a computer.
Clear, concise, and beautiful. Another great Apogee book!
Great for all upper grade levels - this will find it's way into the schoolrooms and the boardrooms.

5 out of 5 stars best book money can buy.......2006-12-19

This is a terrific publication. Profusely illustrated with photos and cutaway drawings, it is the perfect guide to the International Space Station. Each assembly stage is described and illustrated as well as each major component/systems already on orbit and the ones planned until the end of the station's assembly. Details of space vehicles deserving the station are also given as well as facilities and ground operations centers. And last but not least, a list of all Expeditions and Crews is given with their names, photos and mission emblems! The same is provided for the shuttle missions. A list of Soyuz and Progress flights is present as well.
A truly magnificent book. Simply brilliant.

Book Description

The only history of space stations—real and imagined—as cultural icons, fully illustrated with rare and evocative imagery From winged rocket ships, to the giant rotating wheels of Wernher von Braun and 2001: A Space Odyssey, to the epic, controversy-wracked sagas of Mir and the International Space Station, this highly original blend of history and popular culture explains why the dream of a permanently occupied space outpost has captivated so many for so long. Ninety-five of the most arresting drawings, artists' conceptions, and photographs ever assembled, many rare and never before published, illustrate this thought-provoking narrative of the evolution of the space station as cultural icon.

Uniquely qualified to tell the story of the extraordinary effort to actually put hardware and people in space, preeminent space historian Roger Launius is at his best relating lessons from Mir, Skylab, ISS, and the Salyuts, navigating political treachery, translating technology, refereeing controversies, and weaving the magic of space habitation, both real and imaginary. He resuscitates the Flash Gordon and Captain Kirk in us all with his vision of a future in which space stations are surrounded by space-based research parks, industry and commerce, and tourist destinations, and, most importantly, provide a portal to the Moon, Mars—and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book on the History of Space Stations.......2003-08-13

"Space Station: Base Camps to the Stars" is a fantastic book detaling in sweeping perspective the exciting and little known history of space stations, from their origins to the ISS. Each chapter covers a major episode in the history of our endeavors to establish a permanent human presence in space. With rigorous historical research and a keen understanding of how space programs work, Roger Launius describes and analyzes how early dreams and concepts have turned into reality, and sometimes disillusions. Lessons from our cumulative space station experiences for the future are also drawn. These lessons will be key to assimilate not just for future space station efforts but indeed if we are to successfully return to the Moon or send humans to Mars.
The book is beautifully illustrated with many rare drawings, paintings, photographs and other documents. Comprehensive notes with bibliographical information are also provided. These make for a very valuable reference that should appeal to the interested lay reader and specialist alike.

    5 out of 5 stars Up-to-date addition to this great series of books!.......2002-03-25

    Calling all NASA fans! We had this book handy the day the International Space Station was in the news... one of over 150 titles in the "Let's Read-and-Find-Out Science" series that we own and use constantly! Begun in the 1960s, this series is just perfect when you want to explore a specific topic. Books about the different phases of the moon, the ways of ants, ladybugs, gravity, your skeleton.... all kinds of timeless books with timeless information presented in a living way! But what about the books about rockets and sattelites? Boy, are they outdated! That is why I was so delighted with this great new title. Generous oversized format with LOTS of detail.

        Bryan Burrough, coauthor of the bestselling Barbarians at the Gate, has a talent for reworking factual accounts so they read like first-rate thrillers. Dragonfly: NASA and the Crisis Aboard Mir is overwhelming in its scope and breadth of detail, culled from one-on-one interviews and transcripts of recorded conversations between the astronauts and cosmonauts on Mir and Russian Mission Control. Burrough delves deeply into the personal and professional lives of the 11 people who lived aboard Mir from 1995 to 1998. What we soon discover is simultaneously disheartening and fascinating: the men and women who would be astronauts must run a gauntlet of hazings, are judged professionally on their personal lives, and win flight assignments through serendipity as often as through hard work. NASA is controlled by cliques and cults of personality: "People don't speak out, because George makes short work of you if you do.... If you get on his bad side, you won't get a flight assignment...." There are "issues dealing with training and the selection of crews that you don't dare speak up about." The down-to-the-last-bolt descriptions of life aboard the station, from what the air smells like to an explanation of "penguin suits" to the distance between the dinner table and the original, now seldom-used toilet--2 feet--will thrill space enthusiasts. Space may not be "where no man has gone before" anymore, but it nevertheless provides endless dream fodder for those of us left behind on Earth. --Jhana Bach

        Book Description

        On February 12, 1997, two Russian cosmonauts joined an American astronaut on board the only permanent manned outpost in space, the dilapidated, eleven-year-old Mir space station. It was to be a routine mission, the fourth of seven trips to Mir that NASA astronauts would take as "dress rehearsals" for the two countries' partnership in a new International Space Station they were building back on Earth. But there had been bad omens: a Moscow psychic who predicted a mysterious disaster; a Russian doctor who warned that the crew was psychologically incompatible. Within two weeks the omens were borne out, as the three men were suddenly forced to fight the worst fire in space history.

        This was only the beginning of what would become the most dangerous mission in the thirty-six-year history of manned space travelan epic, six-month misadventure that would climax in the most harrowing accident man has faced in space since Apollo 13. In Dragonfly, bestselling author Bryan Burrough tells for the first time the incredible true story of how a joint Russian-American crew narrowly survived almost every trauma an astronaut could imagine: fire, power blackouts, chemical leaks, docking failures, nail-biting spacewalks, and constant mechanical breakdowns, all climaxing in a dramatic midspace collision that left everyone on board scrambling for their lives.

        Based on hundreds of hours of interviews with the cosmonauts, astronauts, Russian and American ground controllers, psychologists, and scientists involved, Dragonfly is the saga of a mission as fraught with political and bureaucratic intrigues as any Washington potboiler. Using never-before-released internal NASA memoranda, flight logs, and debriefings, Burrough vividly portrays an American space program in which many astronauts refuse to raise safety concerns for fear they will be frozen out of future missions. It offers an unprecedented look inside the rattletrap Russian space program, where the desperate thirst for hard currency leads to safety shortcuts and exhausted, puppetlike cosmonauts endure truly inhuman pressures from their unfeeling, all-powerful masters on the ground.

        In Dragonfly, for the first time, the American astronauts who journeyed to Mir speak out bluntly about the failings of the program, from the rigors of training at Russia's Star City military base to the slapdash experiments they were required to perform in space. Yet through it all the men and women of the Russian and American programs persevered, forging friendships that will serve them well as the two countries prepare for the first launches of the International Space Station in late 1998. Theirs is a classic story of a triumph over adversity, destined to be one of the most enduring and widely celebrated adventure stories of our time.

        5 out of 5 stars Thrilling Look at the NASA - MIR Program.......2007-08-29

        This book is an excellent look at life on board an aging space station. The author does an amazing job conveying all the problems on board including the relationship between the cosmonauts as well as the problems with TSUp (the Russian "mission control"). What also makes the book even more exciting are the transcripts of the communication between the cosmonauts and the ground team in Russia. We really get a sense of actually being in the station and going through the chaos along with the cosmonauts. One of the best accounts of life on board a space station. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Realistic portrayal of NASA? Please say it ain't so!.......2007-03-18

        NASA these days is nothing like what I expected. I thought an astronaut had to have balls. You know, as in courageous. Apparently that is no longer the case. NASA is now just another bureaucratic monstrosity that is more about paperwork and kissing butt than exploring outer space. I read in despair about how everyone must act like a little girl if they want to fly into space. That is, they must be cute, pretty, obedient little cyphers. They must have a half dozen college degrees and have a clean record that reveals a predictable, risk-adverse character. They must also get on the good side of some fat bureaucrat who is in charge of the place. Yes, Abbey, I'm talking about you, you fat henpecked b*tch.

        No wonder NASA is no longer breaking ground with its manned missions. It is now run like a freakin' accounting firm, complete with effeminate sissies who pass for men and plenty of loud-mouthed spoiled brats who enjoy being women.

        This is an excellent, informative book, and I ate it up. And it is no wonder that space exploration has stagnated in the past 30 years. Every successful company needs to be initiated by a strong man with balls. But down the road, it is inevitable that the women move in and make everything complicated. Rules are made, rules are made, rules are made, etc. Layer after arbitrary layer. Risk is abhored and chased away. Then you end up with today's NASA, where a character like Abbey must have his butt kissed if a man wishes to ride the space shuttle. What ever happened to daring? Why do we let the soccer moms take charge and mess it all up???

        5 out of 5 stars Author did his homework.......2004-11-16

        This is a very well written and very well researched book. I was very much drawn into the story from the beginning of the book until the last page. Burrough did in depth interviews with about everyone associated with the program and conveys his interviews into a cohesive, interesting and very intriguing story . . . it was hard to put down!

        5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite space books!.......2003-12-28

        This is a great book, very entertaining! You'll feel like you are really there, floating around in the space station.The book goes into a lot of behind-the-scenes personality clashes between astronauts/cosmonauts. Tells the story of the Mir and International space stations.

        5 out of 5 stars The history of NASA's own internal cold war........2003-11-28

        Some of the history of big projects and peoples within NASA. This is a snapshot of the agency when it started to interact with the Russian and its MIR station. The point of view of many individuals on the ground and in space are shared.

        A writtings about things in the past and the author should have kept it that way. One speculation that he made about the future was that a certain cosmonaut would never go to space again after a stay on MIR. That same cosmonaut was part of a crew for the ISS.

        Space is unpredictable both on the ground and in orbit.

Answers questions like how do astronauts wash and go to the bathroom in space. Gives advice to astronaut wannabes like study math and science and go to college (and 64% of all American astronauts were involved in scouting). There is considerable talk about physical effects of zero gravity. A real problem is bone loss so the astronauts exercise for a couple of hours everyday. I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about the ISS and what it is like to live in space for extended periods of time. Includes several activities to try at home and an index. This two volume set is the published proceedings of the conference named in the book's title. Over 200 papers were presented in 18 different technical areas. The conference was multidisciplinary with many international participants; despite the title, you can find papers dealing with lunar science, space law, and other topics. The major technical areas of the papers, organized into sections of the book are:
        1) Planetary surface structures on the Moon and Mars;
        2) Space resources and in-situ materials utilization;
        3) Space energy;
        4) Space mining and excavation;
        5) Space automation and robotics;
        6) Life support systems;
        7) Lunar-based astronomy, and;
        8) Space Education

        The importance of the book lies in its value as a "snapshot" of what a broad segment of the space community was thinking about in 1972. The book is excellent for providing us with an overview of important topics and challenges that must be considered for future space development. Indeed, virtually all of the topics continue to garner significant attention and work across the space community, e.g., within NASA, other government space agencies, academia and industry. It is excellent for providing context for practical discussion of space colonization. I frequently refer to it in my own work at NASA
