Book Description

Living Time is at once a personal odyssey, an intimate doctor-patient communication, and a prescriptive guide for patients and their families. Writing with wit and humility, Dr. Bernadine Healy shares the hard-won insights that transformed her own struggle with a deadly cancer more than seven years ago, affirming her identity as patient and doctor with the many who share this journey.

Together with more than ten million survivors in the United States alone, Dr. Healy, former director of the National Institutes of Health, is a close witness to the medical advances that have brought us to a turning point in the war on cancer. This quiet revolution is curing a growing number of cancers and transforming many others from a death sentence to a chronic illness, one that calls for vigilance but not despair.

Beginning with her own compelling story, Dr. Healy interweaves it with one of the most lucid narratives ever written of what cancer is, how it works in our bodies, and how we can defeat it. She explains how genetic research and other new approaches are radically altering diagnosis and treatment, and she offers precise and empowering ways for patients and their families to access the information and support they need to secure the best in modern cancer care. She also underlines the urgency of accelerating the pace of research that could map out and destroy cancer in the twenty-first century.

Dr. Healy is forthright about the rigors of treatment and the toll cancer still takes, but readers will come away from her book with the information, resources, and heartfelt encouragement they need to look forward to a future with hope.

4 out of 5 stars A must for brain cancer patients/families.......2007-07-23

The first chapter of this book was mesmerizing. Could it mirror my family's crisis any more? It was very kind of Dr. Healy to share her experience. I now know that my family isn't the only one blindsided by an oligodendroglioma. There was a shift in the book, however, from personal to technical. It discusses how cancer happens on the cellular level. It's good information, but sometimes it read like a medical text. There is a lot of imformation on the types of research being done and the hope that all patients should have. It was general enough for anyone dealing with cancer, but particularly beneficial for those with brain cancer. She includes a wonderful list of resources for cancer patients. I also appreciated that even as a doctor, she encouraged cancer patients to make there own informed decisions about their health care.

An excellent book, loaded with facts, for anyone suffering from cancer, heart disease or other medical conditions.

Book Description

the challenge every man faces...the fight every man can win

From the television to the Internet, print media to videos, men are constantly faced with the assault of sensual images. It is impossible to avoid such temptations...but, thankfully, not impossible to rise above them.
Shattering the perception that men are unable to control their thought lives and roving eyes, Every Man's Battle shares the stories of dozens who have escaped the trap of sexual immorality and presents a practical, detailed plan for any man who desires sexual purity-perfect for men who have fallen in the past, those who want to remain strong today, and all who want to overcome temptation in the future.

Includes a special section for women, designed to help them understand and support the men they love.

5 out of 5 stars Wow. I felt like these authors were looking into my soul........2007-09-23

Wow. I felt like these authors were looking into MY soul as they were writing. At times, it frightened me. It was amazing how well I could relate to what the authors were writing.

This book, which is written to Christian males, is all about winning the war on sexual temptation. It gives great advice on how a man can win this battle in as little as 6 weeks. It explored the natural tendencies of men and how our very maleness can lead us down the road of sexual impurity. The authors then turn the focus toward recognizing theses male tendencies and being "on guard" against them so that sexual purity can be obtained.

Some men have been quoted as saying, "It's natural for a male to look [at an attractive woman]." Is this [looking] stealing something that doesn't belong to you? The book answers this question. Also, if you want to be more captivated by your wife (and you may not think it's possible because you are already enamored by her), then I strongly encourage you to read this book.

I believe this book will enable you to win the battle on sexual temptation as well as strengthen your marriage (if you're married).

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I plan to read it multiple times.

5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-09-19

This book gives men an accurate perspective of lust. It provides reasons why lust is wrong by quoting scripture. It provides stories by the authors' personal lives to show that lust attacks all men and in a variety of ways. The book provides real ways to stop lusting. Finally, it provides expectations of the struggle.

5 out of 5 stars This One Pulls No Punches.......2007-08-28

We're living in an age of unbridled sensuality and desire, when almost nothing is taboo, and ideas such as morality, purity, sanctity, and respect are considered highly subjective concepts. Though temptations of the flesh have always been with us - and always will be with us as long as we have the old sin nature inside - it has never before been harder for men and women alike to control their thoughts, minds, and dare I say it ....hormones.

The battle for purity of mind, thought, deed, and heart has escalated to a fever pitch, and countless of men and women alike have hurt others and been hurt by others in the areas of sexual purity. Television ads, billboards, magazine inserts - even in the once harmless Ladies Home Journal - promote life-styles and standards of living that open even the best person to thoughts and desires that, if left unchecked, can run roughshod over good intentions and the way we'd like to live.

Men, in particular, have suffered greatly in this area; and though it's not entirely their fault, the rising numbers of divorce and extramarital affairs inside the church - even among those who have served long and faithfully in the ministry - speak very loudly and clearly that something is wrong.

"Every Man's Battle", by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker, is one of the best devotionals targeting men and the battle for purity that I've come across in quite some time. It's practical, down-to-earth, and both authors "roll up their sleeves" and get right to the nitty-gritty details. It has a two-pronged approach: though it affirms men struggling with purity that they're not monsters, mentally ill, cursed, or alone in their fight; it also pulls no punches when it comes to their admonition to clean up their thought lives and behavior patterns.

"Every Man's Battle" also goes into great depth analyzing the male perspective and thought process - even going into biological detail as to why it's so hard for many men to keep pure - without succumbing to the age-old excuse, "boys will be boys". Much of what they discuss makes a tremendous amount of sense on a simple every day level, but at the same time they back everything with Scripture from God's Word.

It's very practical, and it doesn't just talk about the struggle for sexual purity and give enthusiastic exhortations and admonitions, it lays out and devises easy-to-implement action steps for any men to clean up their lives and obtain purity. In the battle for sexual purity, this isn't just a "Recon & Intel" report, it's a battle strategy aimed at one goal: to win, under the power and strength of God.

Finally, the best part about this book is the fact it's been written by two Christian men who have fought long and hard against the very beast troubling so many men. Other devotionals and books I've read about sexual purity and temptation have been on the ball and scripturally accurate, but they always read a little flat because you got the idea that though they were well researched and written, none of the authors really spent "time in the trenches". These guys have, and they aren't only recommending "good practices they've researched", but battle plans that saved their purity and marriages.

I just finished reading this book and found it very informative and enlightening. It is biblically based and a fun read. I believe it will help me both in my walk with Christ and in my relationships with my wife and family.

It's a MUST READ for any man who wants to grow spiritually with God. And when you finish, ask your wife to read it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic, useful ideas to improve the quality of your life.......2007-10-11

I loved this book because it offers very simple, very practical ideas that busy, busy people can use to improve the quality of their lives without having to make significant behavioral changes or significant time commitments. This type of counsel is hard to come by and very valuable. The book itself is a quick, easy read -- perfect airplane reading.

5 out of 5 stars Manage Energy - great insight........2007-08-23

We need to manage our energy to perform the most important things. We often take our energy for granted and are not aware of our ebbs and flows.
We need to do the most important things when we have the most energy. We need to eat and sleep to have more energy. It originally comes from a sports performance model, but has been adapted for executives. It is also important as we grow older. Truely a new insight for me that unified a few things I ahve been learning.

3 out of 5 stars Push Past Your Limit To Grow.......2007-06-04

I felt this book's main premise was a useful idea, but nothing novel. Expanding past one's limit, followed by a rest period resulting in growth whether physical or psychological. I liked the informational nature of the book, however, I didn't care much for the examples of actual people written about in it. I understand it is used to help prove the points, but it appeared to be fluff to me and I would have liked more information to drill the point home and more sources to back up the info.

Those opinions aside, it is worthwhile, to the point and contains enough information to satisfy reading it once, but I don't expect to re-read it.

    5 out of 5 stars Not a silly self-help book.......2007-05-17

At first look, the subtitle "Managing Energy, Not Time" smells of another 'just do this and your life will be great' self-help book. However, this book avoids most of the simplistic approaches other books take. Outlined is excellent, yet straightforward guidance on how to bring into balance a work life that is out of control or at least a bit out of whack. The simple advice given (which regretfully requires some basic self discipline - I prefer to avoid self discipline) is both helpful and if followed, effective. The book is relatively careful not to imply that applying its principles or introducing self discipline is easy. It is, however, unapologetic when suggesting that making a set of changes in how one manages one's life will make a difference. The book also lays out a very helpful distinction between one's energy and one's time - and it is a very helpful distinction - describing a truth that I had not before carefully considered. The book includes numerous case studies of actual people with which the authors have worked. I think you will be able to identify with a number of these case studies. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and/or lack balance in how your work life, home life, and downtime function, take a look at this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-21

Nothing new here. Eat right, get plenty of sleep and drink your water and you too can have more energy. I have to agree with other reviewers that state that this book is poorly written. Instead of providing a method for creating your own energy plan, the authors give simple hazy case examples.

4 out of 5 stars Scheduling fun helps you get more work done: weird but it works!.......2007-10-17

The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play originally was published in 1989, so perhaps everyone besides me has already read this book ... but I found it incredibly helpful in diagnosing my current procrastination problems with finishing my book and getting done some nagging stuff on my to-do list.

    Pros:

    - Practical tools to diagnose your problems (keeping a procrastination log).
    - The "Unschedule" tool to schedule your fun time, to keep you motivated to get your work done.
    - Acknowledgment that most of us actually only have 15-20 hours a week for the big projects, once you plan for meetings, email, phone calls, showers, kids, sleeping, and the rest of life.
    - Great for self-employed people who have wide open but incredibly busy schedules.

    Cons:

    - Really, you've heard a fair amount of the stuff in this book (keeping track of your time, setting goals, etc.) but I found it was presented in a way that was helpful to me.
    - If you are not a self-motivated person, not sure that scheduling "fun" time will get you motivated to do work; especially if you are not sure what you should be working on.
    - The Now Habit contains a bunch of procrastinator stories that frankly, I speed-read through because reading about other procrastinators make me upset, but those stories may be very helpful if you feel alone in your habits.

    What I've already used:

    - Realized that the reason I was procrastinating on finishing my book (it was 98% done) was avoiding delayed failure. In other words, when I finish my book it will be published and I could fail at selling the book, so if I never finish, I can't fail. Nuts.
    - Used the "unschedule" to figure out I only have 15 hours a week for major projects.
    - First day I used the "unschedule" I got all my work done by 2:30 PM. I didn't know what to do with all that time -- it was weird and great!

5 out of 5 stars The Now Habit Review.......2007-09-06

This was most excellent. It really gave me insights into why I procrastinate. I received many useful tips and strategies.

5 out of 5 stars love it, love it.......2007-08-26

Useful book for all procrastinators out there. I have less anxiety about starting my projects. Also I have less guilt about having fun and not working. Learn new strategies instead blaming your parents for not teaching you the right way.

5 out of 5 stars This book delivers.......2007-08-24

I bought this book several weeks ago and have now read it twice. I've recommended it to many other people at my work. It's a book not just for procrastinators, but for anyone who occasionally finds Mondays depressing, and who feels that work is taking over their lives. In my opinion, the most powerful concept Fiore offers is that of scheduling (he calls it the "unschedule") non-work time; i.e., errand time, living time, fun time (especially fun time), down time -- and sticking to that schedule. The idea is two-fold: it gives you an accurate idea of how much time there actually is to accomplish your work, so that you're more likely to take advantage of the present moment, and it means that you will always have something to look forward to -- and soon -- apart from whatever task you're dreading. So you say to yourself, "Yes, I'm going to work on X, which I don't like much, but that's just part of what's on the menu for today, and once I get some meaningful work put in on it (which Fiore defines as being as little as 30 minutes of quality time), I'll go on to something else, and I will do it without guilt." That makes it more likely that you will actually put some work in on the task, because it no longer is so monumental; you now see it in perspective of everything else you do. It also means you're less likely to find something distracting to do just to avoid the main task, because you're always aware there's good stuff to look forward to. So no "need" to surf the Web just now; you've scheduled plenty of time to play later. Fiore emphasizes that you need to have guilt-free play, separate from work, in order to produce quality work. Although I don't have a particular problem with procrastination, I have found the book quite liberating; it certainly makes me feel better on my morning commute, because I know the day isn't going to swallow me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on procrastination.......2007-07-31

Literally changed my life, or at least the way I think (in a positive way). I am only 3/4 of the way through, so can only speak to the first half or so, but it has been so excellent to this point that I already decided I am going to buy a copy for my Mom, Dad, and sister and brother who all have procrastination issues (must be genetic!) I have read several other books (re: procrastination), and none of them affected me the way this one did. Made me aware of and changed the way I think about myself, for one, but also presented SOLUTIONS, not just "this is what you are doing and why you procrastinate" which is where so many books like this stop. Just great stuff, can't recommend it enough. I plan to see what else the author wrote (hopefully this is not a one hit wonder type situation) Hopefully the rest of the book is as good as the first half. I should also note, I think this book is definitely not geared towards those who just put things off every once in a while, and would like to be better organized (again, which is where a lot of other procrastination books focus). This one, and probably the reason it reached me so effectively, is for people that have procrastination problems that go beyond the norm - consistent behavior that could/would likely result in losing your job, relationships, and just unhealthy living in general (mental and physical). Fiore seems to treat the issue from a mental health perspective, not just "let's try to get you more organized!" Very impt distinction, and if you don't have a SERIOUS, life...hampering problem, I would probably not recommend this. 5 stars from me

    Book Description

Ask the successful CEOs of major corporations, entrepreneurs, top salespeople, and pastors what characteristic is most needed for success in leadership positions, and they'll tell you-it's the ability to work with people.

Some people are born with great relationship skills, but those who are not can learn to improve them. In Winning with People Maxwell has translated decades of experience into 25 People Principles that anyone can learn.

Maxwell has divided the People Principles in this book according to the questions we must ask ourselves if we want to win with people:

Each section contains guiding People Principles. Some are intuitive, such as The Lens Principle: Who We Are Determines How We See Others. Others may go against your instincts, such as The Confrontation Principle: Caring for People Should Precede Confronting People. All of them are 100 percent practical!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book makes so much sense!.......2007-08-24

I always thought the "Golden Rule" was to treat others how you want to be treated, but Maxwell's interesting take was that we should treat others how "they" want to be treated. It makes sense! Awesome read and practical application.

3 out of 5 stars If Bob is being ganged up on the problem is with Bob? No. Not nice........2007-08-08

There were some wonderful passages in this book. I took special note of his passage on how to forgive. But the first chapter has been soundly disproved by loads of research in criminology. Immature people gang up on people, for no good reason except for that they can get away with it, studies have proved. If everyone has a problem with Bob, we don't blame Bob. That's called victim victimization.

Immature people will try to win over even the enemies of their spouses and children - just to power over them and say, "Look at me! I get along with people better than you." It is a well known characteristic of immaturity that has made its way into all the literature on emotional abuse. Mature people don't betray their friends and family in this way.

This might work in the military where hearts are secondary to mission, but it won't work in the real world. It will, in fact, lead us to a digression in civilization.

Mature people understand boundaries violations and powering over and don't allow it to go on in their midst. Good managers know that. Any mother or teacher can tell you that when it's a bunch of people against one, nine times out of ten we have a ganging up situtaion. Only RARELY is it Bob.

This faulty premise, put in the very front of the book, hurt to read and made me distrust the rest of the book. After all, winning with people at the expense of Bob is really awful. Let's try to win with Bob.

When it comes to writing about matters of the heart, I suggest all male writers get consultation from a mature woman who has raised children, nice children.

    5 out of 5 stars Not-So-Common Common Sense.......2007-03-21

Like all John Maxwell books, this book is full of some not-so-common common sense that will improve your relationships and leadership skills if you take the author's advice to heart. This book is simple and straightforward, making it easy to read and understand. The principles described in this book focus specifically on communicating, working with, learning from, and investing in others. What may be the most helpful aspect of the book is the series of questions Maxwell poses to at the end of each chapter to help the reader ponder and reflect where they stand on a particular attribute or skill. The ideas are not necessarily new, but they are wise. Stories and quotes from other people's lives are sprinkled throughout Maxwell's own thoughts and experiences, creating a well-rounded narrative as to how to improve yourself. The bottom line is this: No matter what we do or why we do it, life is about people, and this book will help you do whatever you do better.

5 out of 5 stars Should have owned this book a couple of years ago!.......2007-03-13

I just finished reading this book and I can't be thankful enough to JCM for inspiring me to change my approach on people and to myself. Even if most of them are plain common sense, JCM makes it inspiring and absorbing to the reader like me. He aims to keep reminding people to be always nice to others without expecting anything much in return. If only I read this book 2 or 3 years ago, who knows how much I've improved socially today! But just like what he said here, don't dig the past and regret them. We just need to focus on the present and start changing! Kudos to John Maxwell!

4 out of 5 stars Simple, Practical Advice About Relationships.......2006-12-22

This is one of those simple, yet practical books about how to succeed in life by simply taking care of your relationships. The author proposes, and I agree, that when it comes down to it, relationships are what really matter. If your relationships suffer, you suffer. If your relationships are great, you won't despair life.

The book is broken down into five major sections; 1) preparing for relationships, 2) obtaining the correct focus, 3) building trust, 4) maintaining the relationship, and 5) growing together with those you have solid relationships with.

This book is very easy to read and understand (about 6 hours). Of course, as any book of this genre, the application is the tough part, but this author makes each of the lessons simple enough that it doesn't take an extraordinary amount of effort to actually apply. Even if you just follow half, or a third, you'll be much better off than where you are today.

This book is applicable for a spouse (male or female), a budding young business person, or an old codgy badger. The content here will help you more than intelligence ever will.

    Book Description

Kevin Griffin, a Buddhist meditation teacher and longtime Twelve Step practitioner, weaves his personal story of recovery with traditional Buddhist teachings. The book takes us on a journey through the Steps, examining critical Twelve Step ideas like Powerlessness, Higher Power, and Moral Inventory through the lens of Buddhism. One Breath at a Time presents potent ancient techniques for finding calm and clarity and offers a vision of a Higher Power not tied to traditional Western Judeo-Christian concepts. One Breath at a Time describes the convergence of two vital traditions, one ancient, the other contemporary, and shows how they are working together to create a rich spiritual path for our times. Certain to resonate with both meditators and those whose mantra is 'One day at a time,' One Breath at a Time should find a large, welcoming audience.

    5 out of 5 stars A Truly Spiritual Journey.......2007-09-16

This is one of the finest books I've read linking the 12 Steps of AA with the practices of Buddhism. Kevin Griffin has a magnificent grasp of both and presents them so clearly that it truly is a thrill to read. Excellent writing as well, sometimes poetic. Well done!

    4 out of 5 stars hidden gem.......2007-05-10

I bought this book for my bf as he was coming out of rehab, and ended up reading it myself as well. It has lessons and guidance that even a non-addicted person can apply to their everyday life. I highly recommend this book, it is a quick read, and you'll leave knowing things about yourself you didn't before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to the Twelve Steps and Western Buddhism.......2006-11-25

Kevin Griffin and friends put a lot of thought into integrating these two approaches. However, what makes the book a Five Star instead of a Four Star is the totally honest portrayal of his own life by Mr. Griffin as he tells of his misdeeds and how he hurt others in his bouts with alcohol and drugs. He offers hope and redemption to the rest of us and you will love his happy ending. Were we all so open, humble, and acknowledging of our faults and missteps. A great read for us recovering folks who also would like to focus on Step Eleven, especially through a Buddhist perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from Mara (Illusion).......2006-10-17

This is an interesting dimension on the 12-steps which were Christian in origin and spiritual in nature. One Breath at a Time is a Buddhist slant on the one day at a time approach in recovery. One primary lesson from Buddhist philosophy is that attachment and craving are at the root of suffering. Addiction is both an attachment and a craving whose compulsions take over and trap an individual in an endless cycle. Whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior the illusion that it frees the person from pain is what mara is ... a mirage promising bounties that are empty. So ... for those who are interested in other perspectives of recovery - this is one read to consider.

    5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2006-09-29

This book is well written and easy to read. I relapsed with 13+ years in a 12 step program and having a difficult time getting reconnected. As someone with Buddhist leanings who never quite bridged the gap between the steps and Buddhism I found this book to be of great help. If you are even remotely interested in working the 12 steps from a Buddhist perspective I highly recommend this book.

Social phenomena happen, and the historians follow. So it goes with Google, the latest star shooting through the universe of trend-setting businesses. This company has even entered our popular lexicon: as many note, "Google" has moved beyond noun to verb, becoming an action which most tech-savvy citizens at the turn of the twenty-first century recognize and in fact do, on a daily basis. It's this wide societal impact that fascinated authors David Vise and Mark Malseed, who came to the book with well-established reputations in investigative reporting. Vise authored the bestselling The Bureau and the Mole, and Malseed contributed significantly to two Bob Woodward books, Bush at War and Plan of Attack. The kind of voluminous research and behind-the-scenes insight in which both writers specialize, and on which their earlier books rested, comes through in The Google Story.

The strength of the book comes from its command of many small details, and its focus on the human side of the Google story, as opposed to the merely academic one. Some may prefer a dryer, more analytic approach to Google's impact on the Internet, like The Search or books that tilt more heavily towards bits and bytes on the spectrum between technology and business, like The Singularity is Near. Those wanting to understand the motivations and personal growth of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt, however, will enjoy this book. Vise and Malseed interviewed over 150 people, including numerous Google employees, Wall Street analysts, Stanford professors, venture capitalists, even Larry Page's Cub Scout leader, and their comprehensiveness shows.

As the narrative unfolds, readers learn how Google grew out of the intellectually fertile and not particularly directed friendship between Page and Brin; how the founders attempted to peddle early versions of their search technology to different Silicon Valley firms for $1 million; how Larry and Sergey celebrated their first investor's check with breakfast at Burger King; how the pair initially housed their company in a Palo Alto office, then eventually moved to a futuristic campus dubbed the "Googleplex"; how the company found its financial footing through keyword-targeted Web ads; how various products like Google News, Froogle, and others were cooked up by an inventive staff; how Brin and Page proved their mettle as tough businessmen through negotiations with AOL Europe and their controversial IPO process, among other instances; and how the company's vision for itself continues to grow, such as geographic expansion to China and cooperation with Craig Venter on the Human Genome Project.

Like the company it profiles, The Google Story is a bit of a wild ride, and fun, too. Its first appendix lists 23 "tips" which readers can use to get more utility out of Google. The second contains the intelligence test which Google Research offers to prospective job applicants, and shows the sometimes zany methods of this most unusual business. Through it all, Vise and Malseed synthesize a variety of fascinating anecdotes and speculation about Google, and readers seeking a first draft of the history of the company will enjoy an easy read. --Peter Han

    Book Description

"Here is the story behind one of the most remarkable Internet successes of our time. Based on scrupulous research and extraordinary access to Google, the book takes you inside the creation and growth of a company whose name is a favorite brand and a standard verb recognized around the world. Its stock is worth more than General Motors’ and Ford’s combined, its staff eats for free in a dining room that used to be run by the Grateful Dead’s former chef, and its employees traverse the firm’s colorful Silicon Valley campus on scooters and inline skates.

The Google Story is the definitive account of the populist media company powered by the world’s most advanced technology that in a few short years has revolutionized access to information about everything for everybody everywhere.

In 1998, Moscow-born Sergey Brin and Midwest-born Larry Page dropped out of graduate school at Stanford University to, in their own words, “change the world” through a search engine that would organize every bit of information on the Web for free.

While the company has done exactly that in more than one hundred languages, Google’s quest continues as it seeks to add millions of library books, television broadcasts, and more to its searchable database.

Readers will learn about the amazing business acumen and computer wizardry that started the company on its astonishing course; the secret network of computers delivering lightning-fast search results; the unorthodox approach that has enabled it to challenge Microsoft’s dominance and shake up Wall Street. Even as it rides high, Google wrestles with difficult choices that will enable it to continue expanding while sustaining the guiding vision of its founders’ mantra: DO NO EVIL."

5 out of 5 stars A modern business story that is both unusual and topical.......2007-09-13

This founding and growth of Google is a fascinating story. While this book is very boosterish in its approach, that is fine. We understand what is going on and it is inevitable that the "dark side" of Google will come out elsewhere. Still, at its core and in the surrounding landscape, it is a pretty happy story.

Larry Page, a Ph.D. student at Stanford, wanted to download the Internet to his computer and thought he could do it quite easily and quickly. He met Sergey Brin, also a doctoral student at Stanford, was also interested in working with vast amounts of data, what could be learned from it, an how to organize it. Page came up with the PageRank algorighms that ranked the searches in ways that made them more useful to the person doing the search. (The name is a pun on Larry PAGE and web PAGE).

Stanford approached a number of organizations and venture capitalists to sell the technology, but there were no takers. So, Brin and Page dropped out and started their own company, which became Google. They have always focused on their corporate culture being innovative, oriented towards small teams, doing interesting things and only later worrying about how to make money with whatever comes of the research, and doing the best to live by their motto "Don't Be Evil".

They didn't follow the normal rules for raising money from the Venture Capital community, but were able to raise $25 million. They promised the VCs they would hire a CEO, but put it off for more than a year and when they did accept Eric Schmidt (because the three of them got along) they would not ever report to him nor would they cede control to him. When they finally had to go public (the VC stuff, again), they didn't follow the prescribed and traditional methods the investment banks use and only paid them half their usual fees.

Yes, going into China caused them real spiritual difficulties, and still does. And their goal of gathering all the information in the world and making it available does raise serious questions about personal privacy and freedom that they have not adequately addressed. However, they have great technology. I do use it and love Google Desktop. The book provides some tips about ways to use Google you may not know. Do you know that you can simply type in a math problem and it will solve it for you? That you can type in an address and it will pull up a map? Do you know about Google Book or Google Scholar? Take a look!

    Way cool.

Very interesting read. The author clearly loves Google but that aside, he covers the story from the start of Google as a research project at Stanford University through to their IPO and after. The best parts of the book for me was the incubation phase where they thought it was a good idea but needed to figure how to make money off it and turn it into a successful business. Lots of details on the key decisions made along the way but not too many details where you'd get bored reading it.
I appreciated how the author covered this as a business story covering the early investors who believed in the value of the idea to the immensely successful branding of the Google name. If business and technology companies in interest you, I don't think you'll be disappointed reading this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-08-13

This book was a true delight to read! This was so much more than just how two guys from college created a successful company. It was more than that. Those guys were turned away from Alta Vista, Excite, and Yahoo and had suffered disappointment after disappointment but never gave up. Their product (almost overnight) grew to be a massive empire once they got an investor to give $100k to their company. What I LOVED about this book was watching two easy-fun loving guys (who skateboard at their office in jeans and t-shirt) who continued to look to the future in the face of defeat. These guys never gave up and I, for one, was truly inspired after reading the book.

The back-story of how google came to be can be described as the underdog finally reaching the top and overtaking those who turned him down.

5 out of 5 stars Great company summary.......2007-07-31

This book does a wonderful job of explaining that Google's success comes from great timing, great leadership, having a solution to a specific problem, and a bit of luck. A worthwhile read for sure.

    Book Description

This well-organized, visually interesting book offers an in-depth examination of the social history of rock-and-roll. Rockin' in Time emphasizes several main themes, including the importance of African-American culture in the origins and development of rock music. Tracing rock from its inception–from American blues to the present–this book shows how rock-and-roll has reflected and sometimes changed American and British culture for the last fifty years. Topics covered in this comprehensive history are: the blues and racism; Elvis Presley and rockabilly; Dick Clark and Don Kirshner; the California sound; Bob Dylan; the British invasion; Motown; acid rock; campus unrest and militant blues; the 1970s; punk rock; MTV; Generation X; the rave revolution; hip hop; and nu-metal. An excellent reference work for rock fans, music industry employees, those employed by radio stations, and those in music and performer-related marketing.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly poor, inaccurate work........2005-04-29

I originally had to read this book for a History of Rock and Roll class at the University of Cincinatti. I found the subject interesting, and the professor gave wonderful lectures. I had good expectations about this book going in, but those quickly soured as I read it.

It seems correct, at least, about the social problems of the different eras and their relation to rock. Not that such is a particularly daunting feet.

However, it is rife with laughable fallacies. For instance, it calls David Bowie, amongst other glam rock bands of the era, metal. It futher goes on to call many pop bands of the 60s and 70s rock, when they have no guitar work and no bass line at all, such as the Carpenters.

I really had a good laugh when they called Bad Religion hardcore. Bad Religion is about as hardcore as Elvis is rap. Further massive genre confusion consisted throughout the entire book.

I also noted several drastic misinterpretations of songs. For instance, it claims 'Thunder Rolls' by Garth Brooks is about domestic violence. Its about infedility, not focusing on violence at all, but rather the emotional ramificationsof being cheated on.

The writing is also rather dry. Many times it is merely a citing of the names of band members as well as constantly describing minor changes in bands lineups which are of no true consequence. It also tends to list off songs which have no impact on any giving band's successes or failures.

After reading the book in completetion, I really had to question the earlier passages about older rock and blues (50s to 60s) that I had thought were true. In the end, I felt that it wasted my time and money and possibly misinformed me more than anything.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for what it is........2002-03-25

What is it? A comprehensinve list type book on the history of rock and roll. Not much depth, but ALL genres covered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, concise resource for the social history of rock.......1999-07-05

I have read and re-read this book many times since I first picked up the 3rd edition in 1996. I am a high school social studies teacher and I use this book as a resource constantly when I am teaching contempory history. Well thought out, concise yet complete, easily readable. I applaud Mr. Szatmary for his effort, the book has inspired me to research the sociolgical implications of rock and roll and not merely the "pop history" currently offered. Further, I was so inspired by this book that it prompted me to author a website dedicated to the sociology of rock and roll history.
