Book Description

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — the Chinese have known for centuries how to tap into these five elemental forces of nature and use them to strengthen and heal their minds and bodies. In Chinese Medicine for Beginners author Achim Eckert, M.D., explains the mystery and brings to the Western world an understanding of the Chinese approach to health and healing.

Eckert explores the many facets of Chinese medicine, including the attributes of Yin and Yang, Qi(the life force), meridians of the body, and the Chinese view of the organs. He explains in detail the relationships between organs, energy flows within the body, emotional behavior, mental attitudes, and physical well-being.

Along with practical applications, Eckert explains how each of the five elements works in the human body. Some examples include:
• A disorder of Wood can cause depression and resignation.
• A disturbance in Fire is expressed in nervousness and insomnia.
• An overabundance of Earth leads to exaggeration and emotional outbursts.
• An imbalance of Metal is often revealed by an intense worry about the future.
• A solid balance of Water promotes strong bones and healthy teeth.

Eckert also provides instructions for numerous mental and physical exercises that will strengthen and restore the balance of elements.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear presentation of 5 element theory.......2004-12-28

The book is a lucid presentation of 5 element theory. The author's style is direct and conversational. He starts with a few comments on his early years in Vienna, and travels around the world learning holistic medicine. He specializes in acupuncture.

With this brief introduction complete, the author presents each of the 5 elements in chapter long essays. Each chapter describes the elemental 'personality', signs of balance or lack of same, then related organs and meridians. He concludes with some exercises for strengthening the organs nurturing transformations related to that element. There are some black and white photos of a model demonstrating exercise positions.

He concludes with a brief discussion of the 4 linkage cycles:
1. Mother-nurtures-child: Wood-Fire-Earth-Metal-Water
2. Grandmother-guides-child: Wood-Earth-Water-Fire-Metal
3. Rebellious-child-overwhelms-grandmother: Metal-Fire-Water-Earth-Wood
4. Mother-killing-child: Water-Metal-Earth-Fire-Wood
(I've paraphrased for the cycle names)

Five-element theory can be a very complex subject. This book does a good job of making it understandable to the western reader.

5 out of 5 stars Aura Reading for Beginners.......2005-09-27

The book was delivered much sooner than I expected, howerver i thought i had ordered another book through Amazon that i have not received by Ernest Holmes. Not totally computer wise I may have not clicked enough times. may try again, two copies would not be a waste in my circle

5 out of 5 stars Webster makes aura reading ACCESSIBLE.......2005-05-31

I found Webster's "Aura Reading for Beginners" informative without being overwhelming. Since I'm a beginner at reading auras, this book provided me with the tools to get started. It was presented in a matter-of-fact tone and had very clear instructions. The author goes through step by step how to start seeing your own aura and others' auras, then he progresses to seeing ground and radiant colors of the aura. There's also a section on aura clearing using various methods.

I've been trying to get started in taking the alternative path, but many of the books I've come across were either obscure or provided an overload of information. Webster makes aura reading accessible. My only suggestion to Webster would be to include in the next printing the types of music recommended for all chakras rather than just the first chakra. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone learning how to read auras.

5 out of 5 stars It got me going on aura reading when other books failed.......2001-10-26

This book gave drills on how to TOUCH and feel and aura that worked well for me. I found I could really percieve this. It also explained the various layers of the aura, and I was surprised in this that I have always been able to see one part - the spiritual aura - as sort of a glow. I thought I wasn't really seeing auras because I couldn't see colors! Ater reading the book, I walked around malls and other places to look at people. Out of all those people, I succeeded in seeing only TWO auras. A man with a yellow aura, and a woman with a pink one. That's not much, but it's a start.

There was stuff in there about numerology that did not work for me. According to Kirlian photograhpy I have an indigo aura. According to numerology, I have a gold aura. Shucks. Gold is prettier!

I got the book from a library, and am considering purchasing a copy for myself because I found the information about the various colors was sufficiently useful to become a reference.

2 out of 5 stars It works, but..........2001-07-23

Yes, the tips in this book DO help you to see auras. Let me make it easy for you. Cross your eyes for a second and look above someones head. Tah Dah!! Is that an aura? Okay, let's say it is.

My issue with the book is that it also presented other "paranormal" actives which have been disproved, as fact. ie. dowsing.

Do yourself a favor. Before reading/buying this book read something by The Amazing Randy.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Smith's book.......1999-01-27

If you really want a failsafe way to see the aura, I recommend Mark Smith's book "Auras- See Them In Just 60 Seconds". It's also on Llewellyn, and is more entertaining as well. Webster's book isn't bad, it's just not in the same class as Smith's.

    Book Description

Four long years. That's the amount of time David F. Vennels had been suffering with Post-Viral Syndrome after a serious disease. He was so weak he could not even hold his arms above his head to wash his hair. Over those years he was also in a serious accident; spent his time in bed or being pushed in a wheelchair; and suffered from clinical depression. One day, he went to a lecture and experienced a healing technique known as Reiki. Almost immediately he started to feel better. In Reiki for Beginners, Vennels reveals the rest of his story, including how he was healed, learned Reiki, and became a practitioner and teacher of this healing method.

But the book is not really about his story. It's about you. It's about how you can use Reiki to heal yourself and others, even your pets. It's about how you can make Reiki a part of your daily life in order to bring more peace and creativity into your day-to-day activities.

In this book you'll learn how to prepare for a Reiki Empowerment (initiation), and what to expect when you go through it. You'll learn how to place your hands on yourself or another when doing an "attunement" (healing). You'll learn meditative techniques and other methods that can bring you peace, serenity, and joy every day of your life. And you can easily share that with others.

Since Reiki work uses universal energy, and since that energy is directed by will, the potential for Reiki is virtually limitless. You can use it to heal physical ailments and bring relaxation. It can improve your concentration and memory. And it can be used to complement and enhance other healing systems.

The personal touch in this book (there are many examples from Reiki practitioners) makes it a delight to read and you will see how the use of Reiki can apply to you in many surprising situations. Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars A complete miss.......2007-03-02

The book has a lot of filler. For example, the whole third is dedicated to the history of Reiki and the author's own path.
But my main complaint is that you can't learn Reiki from it. The author states that to be able to use Reiki, you must first be go through the process called "attunement" and you need to attend a Reiki course to do that (or find a Reiki Master to get you through it). Supposedly, this process will open you up to Reiki energy and then (and only then) you will be able to use it for healing. How is it then "for beginners"?

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Introduction.......2006-01-02

Like most metaphysical studies, Reiki, has many different schools of thought. Since I am preparing to take a Reiki I & II class this upcoming month, I wanted to learn as much as possible about Reiki. For that, I thought Mr. Venells book to be a good starting block. No, it doesn't tell you anything, but, then again, it isn't designed to be the "end all" guide to this practice. The very title says "for beginners." This means, people like myself, who are learning more about Reiki will find this book to be helpful. I thought the author did a very good job about explaining the basics of reiki, and his list of resources, while somewhat incomplate, gave a helpful next step.

5 out of 5 stars Reiki for Beginners.......2002-08-06

Reiki practitioner David F. Vennells wrote Reiki for Beginners: Mastering Natural Healing Techniques out of a wish "to share the good health, sense of personal fulfillment, and deeper appreciation of life that I have gained from Reiki." Vennells starts with the story of how his years of suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome were ended with Reiki treatments.

He then explains that "Reiki is the name given to a simple yet profound system of natural healing for body and mind." The name means "life force energy" in Japanese. Although he is a Buddhist, he emphasizes that "there are no belief systems or dogma attached to Reiki." It's a tool that can be used for physical healing, or spiritual growth, depending upon individual needs.

Vennells describes how Reiki was introduced to the Western world, offering brief biographies of the key Masters. He then explains how people can learn Reiki--it's taught personally by a Master to students--focusing on First Degree Reiki. This is the beginning level, and can be quickly learned. Those with First Degree certificates are able to use Reiki for self-treatment and basic healing of others.

He offers numerous suggestions in which Reiki may be used in healing. The twelve basic positions for the hands are described and illustrated. He also explains how Reiki may be used for healing at a distance. Additionally, Vennells provides guidelines for those who plan to go into professional practice.

As well as the actual physical aspects of Reiki, Vennells discusses the five principles, which include "be grateful today" and "be kind to others today," and how to integrate them into daily practice. He talks about the causes and nature of disease, including karma. One chapter includes stories from other practitioners about how they've used Reiki to heal themselves, friends, and clients. He finishes with meditations and visualizations.

An appendix lists sources for finding a Master and various Reiki groups. While Vennells offers tips for preparing to become attuned to practice Reiki and provides guidelines for using it after attunement, people can only obtain their attunement and certificates from a Reiki master, not from his book.

Vennells says that "whatever your spiritual path, or path of personal growth, Reiki can enrich it and bring you closer to your full potential as a human being." Beginners Guide to Reiki is an excellent reference for anyone interested in hands-on healing.

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Reiki.......2002-07-13

When I was introduced to Reiki last year, I found this book helpful and insightful. I am currently Reiki II and will be taking the Master class this weekend. I have given this book to others as a general introduction to reiki.

Thank you Mr. Vennells. May everything be auspicious!

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Reiki Guide For Beginners.......2002-04-06

I'm not sure why this book isn't more popular. It's a thorough and kind introduction to Reiki that is the perfect introduction for beginners. As a Reiki master, I encourage my students to keep this book handy as they learn and practice. David Vennells also offers a nice chapter on Reiki meditations that is a good guide for infusing Reiki into your meditation practices. There's a nice emphasis on self-healing (sadly missing in many Reiki books today)and a caring chapter on the 5 Reiki precepts. A good solid introduction for anyone learning -- or interested in learning -- the healing art of Reiki.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Healer's Manual.......2005-04-14

I found the book very interesting and informative. I had very little
exposure to this type of practice before this book and now have a much
better understanding of the intricacies involved in Energy Therapy. I
rate this book a 5 and recommend it be acquired by any student of the
occult. If you are a student of alternate therapies and holistic healing
you will benefit by what this work has to offer. It will make an excellent addition to the occult library.

5 out of 5 stars excellent everyday resource.......2004-09-09

The author made it very easy to use all the exercises and make it so it is an everyday resource for all practitioners from beginner to advanced. It gives you the back to basics of what so many lightworkers seem to forget once they get into the realm of having clients.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginner to intermediate.......2004-05-25

Good stuff, basic to intermediate level healing techniques. The author does a great job of explaining (and proving) somewhat complex ideas related to hands-on vibrational healing. I've been involved with this field of study for a few years and I still learned a few things.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and useful...........2001-08-18

When you were a child and fell and hurt yourself, do you recall your first instinct was to press your hand over the hurt and hold it? Or maybe you remember sounds, colors, or smells that comforted you when you were sick. Ted Andrews uses the example of the hand held hurt to demonstate to the reader of THE HEALER'S MANUAL that many of his techniques are instinctual. Unfortunately, as we grow older we may tend to forget these simple truths or stop beliving in them as effective remedies.

Andrews divides his book into sections, each dealing with therapies that affect the five senses. My favorites are smell, sound, and sight. I've known for a long time certain scents like Lavendar and Eucalyptus are healing, and that certain kinds of music can lower my blood pressure. I'm also affected by color..yellow can perk me up and blue calms me down.

Andrews discusses many techniques I know will work because I've tried them, and others I sense will work that I have not yet tried. I have doubts about some like healing elixers from gems, but I keep an open mind and a positive outlook. Like the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, I believe in at least six impossible things before breakfast. It's amazing how many of them come true by dinnertime.

    5 out of 5 stars The Healer's Manual.......2001-06-16

Ted Andrews's book, The Healer's Manual: A Beginner's Guide to Energy Therapies is "a manual for helping yourself . . . it will show you that you can control and heal more aspects of your life than you probably ever imagined."

Energy (vibrational) therapies are based on the senses. They include healing through touch, color, sound, taste, and smell. Andrews explains exactly what each therapy is and then explains how to use them to heal yourself as well as others. His explanations are written in easy-to-understand terms.

He starts by defining holistic health and detailing the human energy system. He says that "health is the ideal balance between all major parts of our being--body, mind, and soul--in conjunction with our environment and all that we encounter." He emphasizes throughout the book that all healing comes from within, and that individuals must assume responsibility for their own health.

Andrews discusses how the body is a complex energy system and explains that "vibrational remedies are subtle energy stimuli which interact with the energy systems of the human body to help stabilize and correct physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual conditions." He provides a complete description of the chakras, which control all the energy entering or leaving the body, along with information on balancing each chakra.

The bulk of the book is devoted to techniques and exercises for using vibrational therapies in healing. The exercises are generally quite simple and don't require the purchase of expensive equipment or supplies. For example, many of the color therapy techniques can be done with pieces of colored fabric or paper. Some sound healing can be done by running up and down the scales in a certain way.

The appendices include special information on alleviating pain and long distance, or absent, healing. He also includes a chart of major ailments and the specific therapies recommended for each. Andrews emphasizes that his recommendations are not prescriptive, but are guidelines only, meant only to help with understanding how vibrational therapies work.

Andrews wrote his book to "provide an opportunity, for anyone willing to put forth the effort, to experience the innate healing ability that resides within us all." Following his recommendations does not require that you be "gifted." Readers interested in learning how to stimulate their healing abilities will find the Healer's Manual informative and practical.

    Book Description

    Look at me --
    I'm growing!

With her trademark simple words and delightful pictures, Aliki explains how and why we grow. Our arms and legs, our hair and toenails, our muscles, bones, and skin all grow from the moment we are born.

Some people grow faster than others; some people grow more than others. With the help of good healthy food, we all grow in our own way and at our own speed.

It will happen to you, too!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I love Aliki books!.......2007-04-05

These books never disappoint! All of Aliki's books are written in language that young children can easily understand. This book is no different. "I'm Growing" explores the changes that young children observe in themselves or in older/younger siblings. The illustrations are excellent. My preschoolers enjoy hearing this book read to them over and over again.

    3 out of 5 stars Good Lesson.......2002-03-07

This book was about how and why children grow. There are great pictures, charts and diagrams to help the author explain that children's bones, organs and even teeth grown and change. She explains that correct nutrition and proper care is needed in order to allow your body to grow and for you to be healthy. The book goes on to say that when you are older your bones may stop growing. However, your hair and nails keep growing. Brandenberg explains very simply what the young readers can expect as they grow.
The main reason why I liked that book was because in the story the author tried to get the point across that everyone grows at different rates. Some people's hair grows faster or they may lose their baby teeth before all the other kids. Also, boys may be shorter than girls when they are young but soon they will be taller than their classmates. It would have been nice to be reassured when I was the littlest in the class that soon I would grow, it will just take time and care.
The author highlights the importance of eating healthy if you want to be big and strong when you are older. She shares with the young readers why their bodies are changing and what they can expect in the growing years to come.

    Book Description

Over 20 million Americans run recreationally, but doing it right is more than a matter of buying an expensive pair of shoes and heading for the track. Building on the popularity of The Beginning Runner’s Handbook, this practical, easy-to-use guide provides a step-by-step program for running a half or full marathon for the first time. It shows readers how to get motivated and set realistic goals, choose the proper shoes, eat right, build strength and endurance, and avoid sore muscles and injury. The book includes tips from elite runners on such subjects as staying motivated when the weather is extreme, running technique, running with a dog, and running partners. Finally, the book describes strategies for the race, what to expect on race day, and the psychological effects of finishing a half or full marathon. Most importantly, it includes a full training program designed to ensure that that crucial first race is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Good Place to Start.......2007-10-15

This book is a good place to start. I agree with the last review ... it is not a Jeff Galloway book but if you are a true biginner, it is a good place to start. It has good basic pointers that are easy to understand.

I would say that if you are going to run a FULL marathon, you will need a more indepth book with more advanced information. This book is good to get you into a HALF marathon.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book but not quite a Jeff Galloway.......2006-06-20

I think this is a very nice book but perhaps not as "entertainingly" written as the Jeff Galloway running books ("Marathon-You Can Do It" and "Half-Marathon-You Can Do It") that I've also read. The author even quotes Galloway in a couple of places.

Fortunately, the author does not overload you with much drawn out text and lays out a running plan in a nicely formatted grid. She also points out certain details about what can help based on your sex and age. I really enjoyed the little "true stories" sections that the author throws in every so often. These profiles of people who started out as complete beginners and eventually ran a marathon were, to me, very motivational.

The big difference between this and other books is the training time period. Many books claim they can get you ready for the big time in 13 weeks, this book promotes a 26 week program and the author even hints that if you are starting at ground-level zero, a year to your first marathon is even better.

Overall, a pretty good book for beginning runners of all ages who prefer the tortoise to the hare approach before trying that first 13.1 or 26.2 miles!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-30

This is by far the best book that I have read on any life transforming physical exercise including other books on this subject, as well as books on yoga and tai chi. The author writes simply and masterfully. He promises an easy to learn, easy to do "exercise", and delivers. This book has none of the New Age psycho-babble that mucks up so many other books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-03-31

The author has written a clear & practical book, with compact and understandable information about Qi Gong in general plus some nice information about what it has done for him personally.
It has good instructions and a lot of black and white photos which are easy to follow.
I found the excercise sequence very simple to do. It is relaxing and indeed takes less then 10 minutes to perform.
I think this book is a great start for beginners. Anyone can do these excercises.
If you're interested in other, longer and more intensive Qi Gong forms, I'd like to recommend the book 'The Swimming Dragon: A Chinese Way to Fitness, Beautiful Skin, Weightloss and High Energy' by T.K. Shih.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best choice.......2003-03-14

When Qi Gong developed in China for more than 20 years, Chinese people finally find Falun Gong is the most effective. So there are more than 100 million Chinese people practice Falun Gong before the government's persecution.

But western society seems still enjoy the low level Qi Gongs.

Why not directly start from high level Falun Gong? It is not difficult. When you try, you will know.

There is an old Chinese saying: "Learn from the best".

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2003-02-11

Many of us want very much to do spiritual and physical exercises but never seem to find the time. This practice can be learned quickly from this most excellent book and takes only six minutes. I've been using the book for three months and have felt an increase in energy level, both physical and spiritual, already.

5 out of 5 stars A great Qi Gong primer.......2002-07-23

Qi gong can seem overwhelming, which is why this book is a little gem. It gives you the essence of qi gong as well as a valuable start with 8 exercises, all very clearly demonstrated with a series of step-by-step photographs. Whether you just settle for this or decide to take it further, you would not be wasting money on this book.
