Book Description
Presented at a level equally suited for beginning and advanced students of the field, Intimate Relationships covers material both classic and current.
Chapters range from attraction to love, from attachment to jealousy, from conflict to relationship dissolution - all written in a warm, personal, and engaging voice. Each chapter is organized around the major issues and relevant theories, in addition to a critical evaluation about the research. When appropriate, the authors discuss and evaluate popular ideas about relationship processes in the context of the scientific research. This includes critical evaluations of evolutionary approaches to attraction, victim-based counts of abuse, and the separate-cultures view of the sexes.
For anyone interested in relationship theory.

Intimate Relationships: Issues, Theories, and Research.......2005-07-07
A first class book worth reading over and over again because it is filled with information and is very, very informative concerning relationships. This is one of the best books I have ever read about the subject and I have read many.
Review from a college student.......2002-05-03
I've never written a review for a book before, so not sure quite how it goes. I wanted to say that this is an excellent book - it was used as a "text" book for my college class "Psychology of Love" and it was one of the best books I ever read. Although it does have a "text-book" style, it is easy reading and the information is interesting and informative. Erber and Erber discuss several different theories associated with love, and begin the book with what attracts one another, all the way to dissolution of love. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge and thoughts on love. In addition I'd recommend reading it in conjunction with Robert Sternberg's Love is a Story book, isbn 0195131029.
Book Description
This unique sociohistorical account of family studies traces the development of various theories or methods within the context of the social values, technological changes, and political events of the twentieth century. Each chapter discusses the origins of a particular theory or method, its core assuptions, its applications, and its link to preceeding and succeeding theories or methods.
Book Description
Readings in Family Theory is an anthology of classic and contemporary articles that provides a context for student learning by demonstrating how theory fits into the overall process of scientific research on families. The book provokes student interest in theory by providing examples of the scholarly application of family theory to compare how people use similar processes in everyday life. Using this contextual orientation, the selected readings examine nine prevalent theoretical perspectives from both family and human development sciences.
Editors Thomas R. Chibucos, Randall W. Leite, and David L. Weis offer brief descriptions of the basic concepts and historical roots of each theory along with examples of scholarship and research guided by each. The volume editors suggest that scientific progress will be enhanced to the degree that research and theory are more fully integrated into the family and human development sciences.
Key Features
- Volume editors provide an introduction to the reader and discuss what theory is and why it is important
- Nine theoretical perspectives are examined-family life course, life-span development, social learning, social exchange, social conflict, feminist, symbolic interactionist, family systems, and ecological
- Chapters include a brief description of the readings, issues for consideration, and a list of additional readings for further research
- The concluding chapter provides an overview of developments in family theory and thoughts on future directions
Readings in Family Theory provides undergraduate and graduate students with an excellent introduction to family theory. It can be used as a stand-alone text or as a companion to any other family theory texts.

Family Theories of Interest.......2007-05-13
I found this book interesting, especially the Chapter on Marriage and Celibacy. Does one stay in a sexless marriage? Can a married couple love each other and not want to share intimacy? Dr. Chibucos is a brilliant editor.
Book Description
This solid revision of the best-selling
Family Theories remains the only single-volume textbook to present family theory in a clear, approachable manner appropriate for both advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. James White and David Klein draw upon seven major theoretical frameworks developed by key social scientists to explain variation in family life, including the exchange, symbolic-interaction, family life course development, systems, conflict, feminist, and ecological theoretical frameworks. Brief fictional accounts or vignettes introduce each theoretical framework, concretely illustrating for students how the theory relates to very real aspects of family life. In addition, all chapters follow a uniform format that allows students to more easily compare and contrast theories. Each chapter also includes a typology for analyzing and comparing the seven frameworks while providing direction for future theory development.
New to this edition:
- Chapter One consolidates material on theory and philosophy of science previously spread across two introductory chapters.
- A new chapter on feminist theories has been added (Chapter 7) and the chapter on ecological theories (Chapter 8) has been substantially updated and revised.
- All chapters have been updated to reflect new developments in the field.
An incisive, thorough introduction to current theories of the family,
Family Theories balances the diversity and richness of a broad scope of work from different perspectives with ease of use in a one-semester course. Recommended for courses in Theories of the Family, Marriage & the Family, Family Studies, and Sociology of the Family.

The cure for Insomnia .......2005-08-06
I had to read this book for school, and that is the only thing that kept me motivated to read it! It is informative, but extremely boring! I have read many text books and this is the second worst I have been forced to read, the worst is also by White, titled Advancing Family Theories. This man knows his stuff, but he can not write. The book outlines family theories in a way that makes a visit to the dentist look fun. He covers the subject he set out to do that is the only reason I gave him two stars. If you are a professor considering this book please reconsider, if you have any compassion for your students, however, if you are basically EVIL and want to make student suffer this is the book for you!

Book Description
Human beings are social creatures, and from the moment we enter the world, our personal horizons are defined by our relationships with others. Parents, siblings, teachers, friends, lovers, colleagues-even the countless strangers with whom we interact during the course of any given day-we exist through them and they through us. This book is concerned with one of the most profound, yet difficult to define of human relationships, the healing relationship of psychotherapy.
There are many psychotherapeutic schools of thought, and while they may vary considerably in theory and methodology, virtually all agree that the relationship that develops between therapist and client is important to the success of treatment. But how do you define a "successful" client/therapist relationship? How exactly does the psychotherapy relationship influence process and outcome? What are its various components, and which are most important to the healing process? In this groundbreaking study, Charles Gelso and Jeffrey Hayes provide answers to these and other challenging questions about The Psychotherapy Relationship.
The authors begin by defining the three main components of the psychotherapy relationship: the working alliance, transference configuration, and the real relationship. They then consider how each is generally defined by and functions within various psychotherapeutic approaches, how each interrelates with the other two components within the context of the therapy relationship, and how relationship components and therapeutic techniques interact during treatment. Throughout, the authors draw upon their extensive clinical experience to offer advice and guidance on how to avoid and overcome major obstacles to a successful psychotherapy relationship.
The remainder of the book is devoted to a fascinating in-depth look at the psychotherapy relationship in action in four major psychotherapy schools: psychoanalytic, cognitive/behavioral, humanistic, and feminist. Ever mindful of important factional differences within schools of thought, the authors explore the role of the relationship within each approach in terms of the centrality of the relationship; whether the relationship is seen as a means to an end or an end in itself; the extent to which the emphasis is on the "real" relationship versus the transference; and the manner in which the therapist uses power in the relationship.
The most penetrating and far-ranging exploration yet of this most crucial aspect of the psychotherapeutic process, The Psychotherapy Relationship is must reading for all psychotherapists.
A far-ranging and insightful exploration of one of the most important and controversial aspects of the psychotherapeutic process
The Psychotherapy Relationship is an impartial research-based exploration of the role of the client/therapist relationship in most major approaches to psychotherapy. Drs. Gelso and Hayes break the relationship down into its component parts-including the working alliance, transference/countertransference, and the real relationship-and define the function of each, as it interrelates with both the other two and with various intervention techniques. They explore various theories about the nature and function of the therapy relationship espoused by the psychoanalytic, cognitive/behavioral, humanistic, and feminist schools of thought. And they develop a broad-based, practical synthesis of theory, research, and personal clinical experience that all psychotherapists will find helpful in their efforts to assess and improve the quality of their relationships with their clients.
Book Description
Editor Nancy Chase defines parentified children as parents to their parentsâthose are the children who are compelled to fulfill the role of parent at the expense of their own developmentally appropriate needs and pursuits. With uncanny sensibilities, these children are attuned to their parentsâ moods, wishes, vulnerabilities, and nuances. This volume is a comprehensive study of parentification in the family, covering both theoretical as well as clinical topics. Contributors have written chapters that are grouped into two sections: theory and research, and clinical and broader contextual perspectives. Part One of this book covers research related to parentification and gender, work addiction, families with a disabled or chronically ill child, and assessment for clinical or research practices. The chapters having a stronger clinical or contextual emphasis address varied interventions and theoretical orientations and posit parentification in cultural and ethnic contexts. Students, academics, and professionals in areas of family studies, social work, child abuse, developmental psychology, school psychology, and family therapy will find Burdened Children an excellent resource on this phenomenon.
Book Description
This book provides human service practitioners, policy makers, researchers and students with a comprehensive analysis of the role and function of family caregiving in societies with dependent elderly populations. It begins with an overview of theoretical, conceptual and methodological issues in caregiving. A number of empirical studies which address these issues are then presented. Finally the contributors explore the implications for social policy resulting from our understanding of caregiving knowledge, identify gaps and provide new studies which address these gaps, give direction to practice interventions and illuminate implications for public policy.

Book Description
The study of parents from their own perspective not just as socializing agents of their children has been long neglected. This book summarizes and presents the new and surging literature on parenting representations namely parents' views, emotions and internal world regarding their parenting. Within this area, several prominent researchers typically coming from the attachment tradition suggested various ways of assessing parenting representations, mostly by way of semi-structured interviews. This book presents their conceptualizations and includes detailed descriptions of their interviews and their coding schemes. In addition, a review and summary of the growing number of findings in this domain and an integrated conceptualization that serves a theoretical base for future research are presented. Finally, the clinical implications of the study of parenting representations are discussed at large. Clinical notions and conceptualizations regarding parenting representations are presented and thoroughly discussed including detailed case studies that demonstrate among other things intergenerational transmission of representations.
