5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-10-17

I am the type of person that was skeptical about Harry Potter... maybe because I loved the Narnia saga and thought nothing could be as good as that... or maybe I was simply too old for such magical childrens stuff. So it took me some time till I saw a couple of movies and still didn't fall in love with Harry.
But it was when I read Harry Potter that I really became trapped in the story. I read one book after the other addict style, I saw the movies in between, and even bought a Ministry of Magic t-shirt.
The books are fantastic! The Prisoner of Askaban is my favourite. And this boxed set is top! I enjoy reading paperbacks too because they don't weigh in the hands and you can read them lying, sitting, or standing in the train...
If you are a kid, almost 40 like me, or even 60 give yourself the chance to enjoy these books as much as I did!

5 out of 5 stars perfect for my son.......2007-10-15

I can't wait to read them all when my son is done! he was so happy to get the box set. he has book 7 but doesn't want to read it until he gets all the way through the first six.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal........2007-10-15

The box is a bit flimsy, but its a good deal overall for reading purposes. However, collectors should probably go with the pricier hardback edition.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great.......2007-10-11

I only spent $30.00 plus S&S but I have already read them all now once and am working on a second time. I currently have 2 books rented out to friends. I have orded the set with them in hard cover and a nice box but I wanted a set that I could through into a suitcase and take with me when I travel or to lend to friends without being to scared of what kind of condition they would return home in. This was a fantastic purchase for me

5 out of 5 stars J.K. Rowling is the writer of the century........2007-10-10

Being an aspiring writer, I can appreciate the potential of a good imagination and an excellent ability to put thoughts into words. J.K. Rowling not only created an entire world in her own mind, she was able to project that world in an interesting, entertaining way to her millions of readers. Harry Potter is the quintessential hero who will appeal to adults as well as young children as he battles his way through a magical world of evil villains and befriends a host of unique and colorful characters. Give these books to the most unenthusiastic readers and you are guaranteed to create faithful Potter fans.

I bought this set for my 23 year old for her birthday. Two of our other children enticed her into reading Harry Potter. She really wanted the set and so the entire family pitched in to get it for her. She loved it. She was so excited. I have read the Harry Potter series myself except for number seven, which I am going to do soon. The entire series deserves a five star rating. Ordering from Amazon was easy, fast and efficient. The books were shipped promptly and were everything Amazon said they would be. I love ordering from Amazon and will continue to do so in the future.

Say you've spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand, and jellybeans that come in every flavor, including strawberry, curry, grass, and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling's enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In the nonmagic human world--the world of "Muggles"--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is famous as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities, and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoiled, piglike cousin Dudley.

A mysterious letter, delivered by the friendly giant Hagrid, wrenches Harry from his dreary, Muggle-ridden existence: "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." Of course, Uncle Vernon yells most unpleasantly, "I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HIM MAGIC TRICKS!" Soon enough, however, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts with his owl Hedwig... and that's where the real adventure--humorous, haunting, and suspenseful--begins. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, first published in England as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, continues to win major awards in England. So far it has won the National Book Award, the Smarties Prize, the Children's Book Award, and is short-listed for the Carnegie Medal, the U.K. version of the Newbery Medal. This magical, gripping, brilliant book--a future classic to be sure--will leave kids clamoring for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. (Ages 8 to 13) --Karin Snelson

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

The amazing popularity of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone means that now even Muggles know about the Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Whether or not you've read about Harry, this unabridged audiobook brings his world to life. Reader Jim Dale brings an excellent range of voices to the characters, from well-meaning Hermione's soft, earnest voice to Malfoy's nasal droning; from Professor McGonagall's crisp brogue to Hagrid's broad Somerset accent; and from snarling Mr. Filch to p-p-poor, st-tuttering P-Professor Quirrel. Some of the characterizations are peculiar--why do the centaurs have Welsh accents?--but that's a small price to pay to hear one of the myriad ways to sing the Hogwarts School song. Harry Potter fans of all ages--Muggle or not--will enjoy curling up with a few chocolate frogs, a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans ("Alas! Ear wax!"), and this marvelous, magical audiobook. (Running time: 8 hours, 6 cassettes) --Sunny Delaney

Harry Potter has no idea how famous he is. That's because he's being raised by his miserable muggle aunt and uncle who are terrified Harry will learn that he's a wizard, just as his parents were.

But everything changes when Harry is summoned to attend an infamous school for wizards and he begins to discover some clues about his illustrious birthright.

From the surprising way he is greeted by a lovable giant, to the unique curriculum and colorful faculty at his unusual school, Harry finds himself drawn deep inside a mystical world he never knew existed and closer to his own noble destiny.

5 out of 5 stars Good read........2007-10-17

If you want to escape reality for a while and delve into the literary version of a comic book, this is a good read. It is not too intense, quite whimsical, and pleasurable to relax to after life's pressures have done their duty for the day. Time for fun.

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying.......2007-10-14

Jim Dale gives life to Harry and all of the caricatures in J K Rowllings book. Just as the book is a page turner the audio book is a must listen to. I had to listen to the audio cd's one after another.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter.......2007-10-14

As a harry potter fan, book 1 through book 7 I've read and I love them all, as well as all of the movies made.

1 out of 5 stars I just couldn't get into it at all.......2007-10-11

Co-workers and even my own kids pestered me to read this book. I tried and tried but I just couldn't get past the first 50 pages. I love the movies but just don't care for her style of writing at all. I am told she gets better with each book but this one was a real snoozer.

5 out of 5 stars Makes a long drive fun!.......2007-10-02

I was going to call in sick the next day just because I felt I needed the day off, but then I received my Sorcer's Stone CDs in the mail. I decided going to work wouldn't be so bad if I could listen to someone read Harry Potter to me while I drove my 1 hour commute.

WOW! I was so caught up in the story that I didn't realize I was traveling well below the speed limit. Warning, listening to these CDs could make you late for work or cause you to get off at the wrong exit.

Jim Dale does a fabulous job of changing his voice to sound like the characters he's imitating. I was able to really get lost in the story. The hardest part was turning the car off because I wanted to hear what happened next.

A brilliant work of art, Harry Potter. Really brilliant.

Often compared to Tolkien's Middle-earth or Lewis's Narnia, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea is a stunning fantasy world that grabs quickly at our hearts, pulling us deeply into its imaginary realms. Four books (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu) tell the whole Earthsea cycle--a tale about a reckless, awkward boy named Sparrowhawk who becomes a wizard's apprentice after the wizard reveals Sparrowhawk's true name. The boy comes to realize that his fate may be far more important than he ever dreamed possible. Le Guin challenges her readers to think about the power of language, how in the act of naming the world around us we actually create that world. Teens, especially, will be inspired by the way Le Guin allows her characters to evolve and grow into their own powers.

In this first book, A Wizard of Earthsea readers will witness Sparrowhawk's moving rite of passage--when he discovers his true name and becomes a young man. Great challenges await Sparrowhawk, including an almost deadly battle with a sinister creature, a monster that may be his own shadow.

Book Description

Ged was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea,  but once he was called Sparrowhawk, a reckless  youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered  with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow  upon the world. This is the tale of his testing,  how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an  ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to  restore the balance.

4 out of 5 stars A Wizard of EarthSea.......2007-09-26

This is a fun story for the younger crowd to enjoy (8 years and up). There is good character development in this story of a young boy growing up that sweeps you into the high adventure of wizards and magic and dragons that is sure to keep one riveted to this page turner.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book........2007-09-21

This book is better than Harry Potter, it has a much more immersive story, with infinite possibilities, the characters are very solid, and clever, Ursula Paints the very image of Earthsea in your mind!

4 out of 5 stars A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin.......2007-09-19

If you call this a work of classic fantasy meaning it's like every other fantasy series with its magic and wizards and made-up worlds, you would be wrong. If you call this a work of classic fantasy meaning it's a great piece of work that set the foundation - like Lord of the Rings - for a lot of other series, you would be right.

A Wizard of Earthsea is the first book in the Earthsea series and as all fantasy series should, it begins with a young wizard, Ged, who knows nothing of magic and the ways of being a wizard, other than his innate ability promising him a career as a great wizard. First he lives with a wise mage, and learns much about the simple things in life and magic and that everything has a cost. He soon discovers this when he performs a dark spell from a book he shouldn't have touched. A deadly shadow is summoned and then banished by his teacher, but Ged knows he will be facing it again.

Ged then travels to the isle of Roke where he spends years becoming a master wizard. Upon his graduation, he faces the dark shadow once more but is unable to hold against it and flees in terror. As a renowned wizard now, he travels around the islands helping those less fortunate, battling dragons and other monsters. Then again he faces the shadow and barely survives, fleeing once more. He returns to his old master, unsure what to do. The wizened wizard tells him he must face the shadow and in turn face his greatest fear. And so Ged heads out into the deep sea where none have gone before and there faces the shadow and wages a great battle, finally defeating him. The book ends with Ged returning to land with his friend, now a true and accomplished wizard with the thousands of islands of Earthsea before him.

What makes LeGuin's fantasy series more meaningful than most is that all the magic performed here comes at a cost, which the main character has to deal with throughout the book. It requires time and energy, afterwards one is tired; to create illusions is much easier than to actually change or create matter. Unlike the world of Harry Potter, here there are rules; not everyone can be a wizard. Along with this is the magical world of Earthsea with the many many islands of different peoples, a lot of which know little of each other. And for a wizard to travel from one island to another is a great adventure. The next book in the series is The Tombs of Atuan.

4 out of 5 stars Just Great!.......2007-09-15

Growing up with the Harry Potter series, I am so surprised that it took me so long to even hear of this writer and series, but I am glad I finally did. It is a wonderfully paced beginning to what proves to be a fantastic tale of Ged of Earthsea. It combines all the good stuff you would want in a fantasy; dragons, magic and dark shadows with the clean, rich and guiding (not pushing like some other series) writing that Leguin seems to be so good with. Just Great!

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Easily the best of this series of books. A Wizard of Earthsea is the story of a young boy named Ged, who becomes a wizard.

Earthsea is a world of island archipelagoes, so a lot of boating and shipping goes on. Everything has a public name and a secret name, as knowing the names of things can give them power.

Ged, or Sparrowhawk must master magic, fight demons, and work out what his role is in life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Set of Books.......2007-08-15

I wanted to have the hard copies of these books to pass on to my kids and this is an excellent collection.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading, overall,.......2006-07-03

I read these books when I was about nine or ten. And I was totally, utterly, and completely in love.

And then I reread them now as twelve year old, and they have degraded. The plot and the characters are ultimately lovable, though it becomes a bit too repetitive in the fifth and sixth book. But I'm actually quite proud of how the characters have developed from the first one; they are 3D, dimensional, lovable, and almost believable. (though I find Draco Malfoy is just too...cliche-bad-boy-unbelievable)

It's mostly J.K. Rowling's writing style. I like fresh, appealing descriptions, not so much the "and there was a chair in the room and a small boy and another boy and..." (Okay, I just made that sentence up. But still. I find that to sorta be her style... lists and not descriptions.)

Still, if not just for the characters - I'd read it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't you dare put it down!.......2005-07-24

WOW- I absolutly FELL IN LOVE with these books, and all because of how good the first one was. Some people may say that if you read the first couple of pages of a book, and it doesn't really "light your fire" then don't bother with the rest. I BEG to differ! The first chapter of Harry Potter #1 might make little sense to one, until you have read farther along into it. I know I didn't really "get it" at first, but I kept reading. So don't listen to those people who say don't bother!
Because this is one of the best series of books ever written. Right up there with "The Hobbit"- that's something big. And for those who are worried about their children learning bad lessons from Harry, about sneaking around, keeping secrets, witchcraft?!?!, ; people, just relax. Don't over anyalse it, (it's a BOOK! not some devil worshipping cult, I still can't get over how some people are so prejeduced against it and won't even read it because they think it will "corrupt their children" and think that Harry Potter will lead them down the not-so-primrosed path. Qualities of loyalty, honour, love, friendship, and good against evil are very prominent, and clear to see in these books.
I think everyone will enjoy these books entirely! They're not just children's books, they're books that everyone can read and benefit from.
If I could rate this book ( and it's series ) as 10 stars, I would!

5 out of 5 stars simply the best..........2005-03-31

cant help but to give two thumbs up...it's nice to read a story about a mother's love, great friendship, story with a twist and humor and most especially with a plot and setting that definitely would take your imaginations to the highest level in one package...so hold on to your seats and be ready for the stories that this extraordinaire would leave you spellbound!!!

5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2005-03-19

It's Harry Potter, what can I say? It's the series that got kids reading again. Everyone knows the plot. A boy wizard named Harry grew up with his cruel muggle (non-magic) aunt and uncle after his parents were killed in a car crash. At the age of 11 he's informed that he's a wizard, and that an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort murdered his parents and very nearly killed him. His aunt and uncle dissaproved of the world of magic and tried to keep everything a secret from Harry. He's taken away to live at a castle called Hogwarts, a school for young witches and wizards where he befriends the studious, proper Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasly, a poor boy who lives in the shadow of his brothers Charlie, Percy, Bill, and Fred and George. In book 1, Harry arrives at Hogwarts and finds that someone there is secretly trying to destroy him and is hiding a VERY big secret from the rest of the school.

In book 2, an unknown assailant is attacking students and everyone thinks Harry's doing it. We learn that no less than THREE characters are not what they seem. We are also introduced to Ron's younger sister Ginny, who has a crush on Harry.

In book 3, a murderous madman is on the loose and seems to be coming after Harry. But who, exactly is he? And the very LAST character you'd ever suspect of being evil reveals his true self.

In book 4, Harry is enrolled in the Triwizard Tournament, where three different magical schools select students to compete in daring, dangerous tests of school. Harry also attends the Quidditch world cup with the Weasleys and has a frightening run in with Voldemort and his servant in a graveyard. One character is tragically killed (I actually cried) at Voldemort's hand.

Book 4 is probably my favorite, along with 1, but there's really no such thing as a bad Harry Potter book. The movies are fantastic as well, and the sixth book is due out in a few months.

The first volume of the Eisner Award-winning series featuring Eisner Award-winners author Brian K. Vaughanand artist Tony Harris. Set in our modern-day world, EX MACHINA tells the story of civil engineer Mitchell Hundred, who becomes America's first living, breathing super-hero after a strange accident gives him amazing powers. Eventually Mitchell tires of risking his life merely to maintain the status quo, retires from masked crimefighting and runs for mayor of New York City, winning by a landslide. But Mayor Hundred has to worry about more than just budget problems and an antagonistic governor, especially when a mysterious hooded figure begins assassinating plow drivers during the worst snowstorm in the city's history!

Mitchell Hundred used to be a superhero. That is, until he failed to stop the destruction of both Twin Towers in New York, by terrorists, only leaving one.

He decides to become a politician, and because of hassles and disagreements, gives the party system the arse and runs as an independent.

5 out of 5 stars Play like graphic novel in a realistic setting.......2007-06-08

I haven't been into too many comic books. Mostly because superheros were never really my thing. A friend of mine was telling me about a few comics, and recommended this one to me. Being a bit skeptical I picked it up and read the volume.

The story started a bit slow to get in to. Probably because of my skepticism. However at the end I wanted to read more, and more. Not because of a cliffhanger either. The art is done beautifully, modeled from actual people. It is told naturally, but it seems like they put it together like a play. It is realistic in the sense of a lot of actual things in New York city exist. The way it is told is real. Without a little "magic" in it (no spoilers), you would think it was a true political story.

2 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-04-05

Some people probably rate Ex Machina versus the universe of graphic novels or comic books, or perhaps even including written sci-fi. This first volume likely stacks up pretty well there. I rate it versus a larger universe, where really great art is ... rare. In this genre, so far, there are, for me, two standouts: Watchmen, and slightly lesser, but still great, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This doesn't even come close, and would get, charitably, three stars.

Now, price. I paid $10-ish for the first volume of many, which barely lasted me an hour of reading. You can have the complete sets of the above masterpieces for around $10-15 per. I'm sorry, but I'm not a comic-book guy, so this just feels slightly like a rip-off to me. Minus one star.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mature comic book.......2007-04-05

A very interesting exploration of the concepts of "hero"/"politician" and of the subtle and not so subtle contradictions within any power structure.
Also very funny!

Good story.
Good pictures.
Why not...it sure beats the cookie-cutter superheroes and the way he uses his power is niffty.
AND he can balance the budget too!

Who would have thought that the story of a boy and his monkey would be so cool. Yorick is an amateur magician and escapologist, and he has a pet monkey named Ampersand. This is lucky for him, as Ampersand being around is what keeps Yorick alive, when a disease wipes out all the men on the planet. This is quite shocking, and the ramifications being to play out here.

4 out of 5 stars Going to Be Honest..........2007-08-25

I'm going to be honest; though I can tell that "Y: The Last Man" certainly has gotten it's fair share of praise and hype, I've never heard of it until recently. I happen to be a huge fan of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and, since Brian K. Vaughan is going to be writing an arc of that series, I decided to give his creator-owned work a try.

The first arc of Y ("Unmanned") is definitely a winner. While the first issue starts off a bit slow, things pick up and never slow down until the last page, which pretty much makes you want to run to the store for Volume Two. One small negative that I do have to voice is that so many characters and situations were introduced in the first issue of "Unmanned" that it was a tad difficult to remember them when they popped up again in issues two, three, and four. However, all it took was some re-reading of a few pages to set me back on track.

Vaughan deals with an epic situation in this book, while still making the reader feel as if everything going on really could happen. The dialogue is witty but believable, the art is simplistic but very hip and suitable for this series, and each character has a certain mystique, ensuring that there will be as many readers for the second arc in this series as there is the first. Another thing I love about this series is how much Vaughan seems to love this world; In my opinion, you can always tell when a writer loves what they write, and Vaughan's excitement for this series bounces across the pages at every twist, reveal, and joke.

There are, if I'm not mistaken, nine of these trade paperbacks out and even one more that has yet to be released. I have no idea where this series is going, but--as it is just so addictive--I plan to keep at it.

8/10

1 out of 5 stars 2 Dimensional through and through.......2007-07-29

I bought this book because of the hype, because of the awards. I've just recently gotten into comics and have been adoring truley great authors like Gaiman, Moore, and Millar. This book however, though highly reviewed, disappointed me more than I can relate.

Where should I start? The one redeeming aspect of this book is the original concept: one male human and a male monkey are all that have survived a mysterious catastrophe that killed all the other mammals that have a y chromosome. Interesting setting to begin from.

Aside from this everything is bad. The characters are two dimensional and completely uninteresting. Their responses to the disaster are undeveloped and unrealistic. The dialogue is filled with stupid jokes and one liners that are uninteresting and predictable. The universe the story takes place in remains completely undeveloped.

And then there are the gender problems. In a situation where the author could have endless interesting things to say about gender in our society, what does he do? He divides women into two groups: the "normal" women, who behave how you'd expect, and the rampant psycho-feminists who burn off a breast and myopically attempt to destroy everything male. This is Rush Limbaugh's idea of feminism: any women who dreams of being treated equally must actually be a ravaging lunatic. There is no depth, no shade of gray, no attempt to understand why some women might have a right to be angry by how society has treated them, no anything that makes it interesting. It is simply a fallback on unrealistic and damaging stereotypes that exist so that men don't have to reflect upon gender relations within our society. Totally boring and offensive. (I could handle the Amazons, as they are called, if there was ANY depth to them at all, or if they weren't put forword as the definition of feminism.)

The political interactions are similarly simplified and uninteresting (sophmoric jokes about republicans and democrats both, each of which do nothing to shed any real light on what people would actually do in such a situation).

Furthermore, the art, while not terrible, is certainly not interesting. It manages to tell the story in pictures, but it never does anything that stuns you, moves you, or surprises you.

I really wanted to like this story, because I am searching for comics that are truly works of art. This is not. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars When the Battle of the Sexes comes to an abrupt end..........2007-06-21

I grew up with comic books. In my teens, I was a big fan of the super hero genre but wanted something more from comics when capes and cowls ceased to be enough. Vertigo comics is my touchstone when I'm looking for a great title in comic form, thanks in large part to Neil Gaiman's Sandman.

Y: The Last Man does the Vertigo imprint proud. Brian K. Vaughan doesn't just attempt a depiction of the near-literal end of mankind; he owns it. In clumsier hands - male or female - Y would have been an aimless tale of humanity's survival, inflammatorily sexist, or a pure masturbatory fantasy. Vaughan approaches this ghastly premise with sensitivity and respect to both sides. Nor does he pull punches.

The story centers on one man - Yorick - but, in many respects, the biggest character in the series is an Earth without men. Although the majority of rapists and violent criminals are dead, the world hasn't become a peaceful place. The domesticated female race is left to fumble in a world built by and for men while the readers appreciate the resourcefulness, fortitude, and sheer cruelty women are capable of.

Original, witty, graphic, honest, and grisly, Y: The Last Man is a story that speaks to male and female readers alike. It's hard to think of the world the same way after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Consuming, can't stop at Vol. 1.......2007-05-18

I was introduced to these BKV penned tomes after reading his Pride of Baghdad. As a writer BKV seems fresh and exuberant and not fettered by the vapid effects of being an over-extended and over-published comic writer. The story transitions from gripping and slightly uncomfortable to sandwiching shock between pockets of entertaining and cheeky dialogue. Despite it not being the first narrative of 'gendercide' leaving 1 man in a world of women the story still manages to feel new and unexplored. You'll find yourself physically pumping your arms in the air to celebrate the exploits and triumphs of Yorick & Ampersand.

Pia Guerra was a good choice as an artist for the series. Heavily inked and sketched artistry would have watered down the narrative. Pia's work does not detract from the storyline and in fact seems a perfect fit. I would say though that had I picked a monthly issue up in a store and flipped through it I would have immediately discarded it back to the shelf because the pencils don't draw you in. The story is there to do all the work with Pia's pencils simply supplementing an already brilliant book. Put her drawing in a monthly issue of any Marvel title would be doing her a disservice. Pia obviously made an excellent choice by teaming up with Brian.
I've enjoyed this series of trade paperbacks tremendously and will continue to collect them. If you can find it purchase the original issue #1 of Y:The Last Man - you'll find it a good investment as it's value will only go up in the coming years.

Product Description

Horn Book : A rhyming text describes the progress of one hundred ants marching toward a picnic. To travel faster, one ant suggests dividing into two lines of fifty, then four lines of twenty-five, and finally ten lines of ten. Their frantic reorganization takes so long that the picnic is gone by the time they arrive. The illustrations, which look like linoleum cuts, use a pleasing palette and energetic lines to depict ants with highly individual characters. Publishers Weekly : "A first-time author and illustrator are off to an impressive start in this spirited story . . . The unexpected pairing of sophisticated art and light-hearted text lends this book particular distinction."

This is a terrific book -- when you get into it, the words are almost automatic. The math just sort of sneaks in. Very fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars My number-loving 4 year old can't get enough!.......2006-05-14

My son LOVES this book! It is now one of his favorites, along with The Greedy Triangle. My son is high-functioning autistic and is obsessed with numbers - he loves to play with calculators, adding machines, and cash registers. So this book was right up his alley. He seems to be understanding the math lessons behind the book, as well, so it is both entertaining and educational for him. Highly recommended for math-curious kids.

4 out of 5 stars They use this book at my child's school to teach math concepts........2006-03-04

This book was sent home with 100 unifex cubes to use along with the book. We used the cubes as the ants. We started off with one line of 100 cubes (as the ants). Then, in the story, they split into 2 lines of 50, so we split our cubes, too. Then, 4 lines of 25, and so on.... Excellent book to use with the cubes to demonstract how many different ways to make 100.

4 out of 5 stars Elisa- Elementary Ed. Student at U of A and Pima.......2005-03-11

I read this book to my two cousins, one who was age eight and the other six. The older one did not like the story very much, she thought she was alittle too old to be listening to a book about ants going to a picnic. However the younger one enjoyed the book, even though she did not understand the division. She enjoyed the way the book flowed, the pictures, the story and most of all the "hey and a hi dee hos". I think for younger readers this book is really fun and instructional.

4 out of 5 stars math can be fun.......2005-03-11

I am a current Pima College student. The book was read to a class of second graders. They seemed very receptive of the fact that it rhymed(in fact they loved it). I asked one student named caitlyn, if she understood the math concept it taught. She said she did not realize math was involved. So although the concept is somewhat suttle to children I think this book would be a great introduction to division. So i would recomend this book to anyone with kids or to teachers.

    Book Description

Flora of North America brings together for the first time ever in a concise and easy to understand format information on all of the plants growing spontaneously in North America north of Mexico. Volume 24 of Flora North America is one of two volumes on grasses to be published in this series (Volume 25, though it follows sequentially, was published in 2003). Together they will provide a comprehensive, authoritative, illustrated account of this important group of plants. Most of the species treated are either native to North America north of Mexico or are introduced species that are now established in the region, but there are many that do not fit into these categories. Among the additional species are several that the USDA has identified as major weed threats; and others that are known only as cultivated plants, some being cultivated for their ornamental value, others as sources for human food or animal forage. For instance, volume 24 includes such ecologically important genera as Elymus (wheatgrasses), Poa (bluegrasses), and Festuca (fescues), economically important species such as Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley), Oryza (rice), and Zizania (wild rice), several ornamental species, including some bamboos, and noxious weeds such as Elymus repens (quackgrass), and Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). The volume includes identification keys, descriptions, line drawings, and ecological characteristics for each of the species; distribution maps for the native and established species; and a list of commonly encountered synonyms for the accepted names. The treatments, each of which has been extensively reviewed, are based on a combination of original observations and critical review of the literature.

If you are using the textbook, _Calculus and Analytic Geometry_, it is imperative to get a copy of this solutions manual. The solutions manual comes in handy whenever you run into a difficult problem, and the solutions are very clear and thorough for every problem in the book. This book really helped me in college calculus.

McGraw Hill's 'Calculus and Analytic Geometry' is an excellent calc book in itself, and this guide is an excellent resource for any student using that book. It contains solutions for all of the problems in the textbook, step by step in an easy to understand manner. I definitely recommend this book and it deserves 5 stars, but I'm only giving it 4 stars because the price is a bit steep.
