5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2007-04-17

I found this to be a well written, easy to comprehend introduction to MatLab programming. I had programs written and running within the first two hours of reading it. Makes a great quick reference as well.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST first MATLAB book for sicentists and engineers.......2006-11-08

This book is a true joy to read. It is well-organized, well-written, and provides the most clearly illustrated (through examples and figures) introduction to MATLAB I have found. More importantly, it is specifically geared to scientists and engineers e.g. those seeking to exploit MATLAB's numerical methods capabilities either for teaching, learning, or researching. Each chapter contains relevant and useful exercises from the material and provides complete answers for you to check your work right away. The sections on graphics and publishing are very nice and demonstrate how MATLAB is a full-service software tool. The second half of the book provides an excellent overview of "Applications" - basically, numerical methods using MATLAB. The book focuses on the built-in functions for root finding, quadrature, ODEs, etc. but not the details of the algorithms themselves (here it refers you to a numerical methods textbook). This should be the first book any scientist or engineers buys when starting to learn MATLAB. The MATLAB Guide by Higham and Higham (2nd Edition, SIAM) should be next . . . Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it for beginners.......2006-05-06

This book is extremely helpful for novice MATLAB users who need to generate results quickly. It is concise and easy to navigate.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-02-21

This is a very fine resource for laerning Matlab from the introductory level.

5 out of 5 stars An easy Intro!.......2006-01-30

I think this is a really nice and user friendly book if you look for a painless intro to mathlab, or if you look for the quick and essential tips that can get you started hands-on with a few functions or programs. No prerequisites are needed!
Of the computer and programming tools out there in math and in CS, Matlab is probably the one that it tailored more directly to numerical computations and to matrices (to graphics too!); as opposed to symbolic manipulations, where perhaps Mathematica and Mable have an edge. Yet, these choices often come down to a matter of taste, and to what you are used to. Or what the book or the class is steering you towards.
Still, I noticed over the past year, that teachers and students involved with elementary numerical analysis, math, or CS courses have liked this little book. And yet, there are lots of other Matlab-books out there; as well as manuals, step-by-step guides, etc; and some are even free on the web. Thanks God for Google! But this little book seems especially attractive for beginners.

Book Description

In this updated edition the main thrust is on applied Kalman filtering. Chapters 1-3 provide a minimal background in random process theory and the response of linear systems to random inputs. The following chapter is devoted to Wiener filtering and the remainder of the text deals with various facets of Kalman filtering with emphasis on applications. Starred problems at the end of each chapter are computer exercises. The authors believe that programming the equations and analyzing the results of specific examples is the best way to obtain the insight that is essential in engineering work.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking explanations as a textbook.......2004-02-11

I am trying to learn the subject by reading this and Gelb. Even though this book covers a lot of introductory concepts, it is lacking proper derivation of equations that I usually see in most math and physics textbooks. I find this book very disappointing for its price.

5 out of 5 stars what you need to get started.......2003-07-05

I have read over simplified and over complicated descriptions
of the Kalman filter for years. The theoretical discussion is
well matched to the examples. THe authors have obviously had
extensive experiance TEACHING to a wide range of students and
the book benefits from their experiance.

I was able to program filters for three of the examples that
most closely match my own applications and exploit what I
learned in a matter of hours. The MATLAB code was useful, but
not critical.

I use this book on a daily basis. It is worth its weight in gold.

2 out of 5 stars Kalman filters, Brown & Hwang vs. Gelb.......2003-02-07

This is not my favorite text on Kalman filters. I find there is too much emphasis on elementary, preliminary material, and not enough on application.

I teach the subject out of my own notes (draft book) where the development follows that of Gelb, Applied Optimal Estimation, and all of the computations are done in Matlab. I first read Kalman's original papers in great detail, and rederived his work before the Gelb book (MIT Press, 1974) was published. Since the advdent of Matlab (1984) I have continued to used Gelb's derivations, and augmented that work with extensive Matlab examples.

I still find Gelb more usable as a text than other, newer books, and will continue to use it along with my Matlab supplements.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter.......2005-05-19

A course in mechanisms required this text, and I thought it was the most amazing starting text. I knew nothing of matlab prior to the book, and after reading it I could program in matlab proficiently.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent to learn with and then use as a reference........2004-09-23

I never learned Matlab as a BSEE student, but use it extensively as a grad student EE. I learned Matlab very quickly with this book and continue to use it as a basic reference. It does not go into depth in DSP, creating graphics, or the optional Matlab toolbox functions, but its a great starting point to learn Matlab.

5 out of 5 stars A Quick Introduction..........2002-02-25

I started hearing about MATLAB when I started going to college to do my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. I took a C++ class and I really enjoyed the power of C++ in problem solving and logic.

Then came MATLAB which is a class that is required to be taken by all EE students. I got this book because it had the word "quick". Time is a very important factor when it comes to learning a new language, whether a living language (like French) or a programming language (like C++ or MATLAB).

This book is really a nice way to get you started with confidence. I rarely use the assigned book for the class, I use this one instead. Very easy to read and step by step instructions.

Highly recommended for anyone who's just started working on MATLAB.

Even after you get used to MATLAB, this book can be used as a reference book to find some important commands with examples and illustrtions.

Book Description

This is a simple, concise, and useful book, explaining MATLAB for freshmen in engineering. MATLAB is presently a globally available standard computational tool for engineers and scientists. The terminology, syntax, and the use of the programming language are well defined and the organization of the material makes it easy to locate information and navigate through the textbook. This new text emphasizes that students do not need to write loops to solve many problems. The MATLAB "find" command with its relational and logical operators can be used instead of loops in many cases. This was mentioned in Palm's previous MATLAB texts, but receives more emphasis in this MATLAB 6 edition, starting with Chapter 1, and re-emphasized in Chapter 4.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book on Matlab.......2003-07-17

This is a very good book for novice to learn Matlab. It is clear and concise and with some work-out engineering examples. For beginners to learn Matlab, this book is better than " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" by Edward B. Magrab. But if you already know some basics of Matlab and want more details and advanced functions or egineering examples, " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" is a better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to MATLAB.......2003-06-22

This is an excellent introductory book to MATLAB. The examples provided is a great motivation for engineers who tend to shun away from computer programming. During my freshmen year, computer programming was taught by the computer science dept. Their method of teachin is a roller coaster ride for many engineers which resulted many of us, including me to have a phobia in programming. However, Palm has explained the use of MATLAB and programming with clear examples and some interesting exercise to keep one hook onto the subject as well as realizing the importance of MATLAB and programming in engineering.

Therefore, this is a highly recommended book for those who intend to learn more about MATLAB which is an important software for engineers.

5 out of 5 stars My first book in Matlab.......2002-10-10

This books is very good as an introductory for Matlab users, espcially engineers.. It contains alot of enineering problems solved using Matlab. It is good for freshmen students and engineers. It can be studied as a first course in computer programming, rather than Fortran, C or Pascal. I am a lectureur in Electrical Engineering Department. I would recomend it to be studied using this text book.

Book Description

The subject of partial differential equations has an unchanging core of material but is constantly expanding and evolving. Introduction to Partial Differential Equations with MATLAB is a careful integration of traditional core topics with modern topics, taking full advantage of the computational power of MATLAB to enhance the learning experience.

This advanced text/reference is an introduction to partial differential equations covering the traditional topics within a modern context. To provide an up-to-date treatment, techniques of numerical computation have been included with carefully selected nonlinear topics, including nonlinear first order equations. Each equation studied is placed in the appropriate physical context. The analytical aspects of solutions are discussed in an integrated fashion with extensive examples and exercises, both analytical and computational. The book is excellent for classroom use and can be used for self-study purposes.

Topic and Features:

• Nonlinear equations including nonlinear conservation laws;

• Dispersive wave equations and the Schrodinger equation;

• Numerical methods for each core equation including finite difference methods, finite element methods, and the fast Fourier transform;

• Extensive use of MATLAB programs in exercise sets. MATLAB m files for numerical and graphics programs available by ftp from this web site.

This text/reference is an excellent resources designed to introduce advanced students in mathematics, engineering and sciences to partial differential equations. It is also suitable as a self-study resource for professionals and practitioners.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but the 2nd edition will hopefully be better.......2002-02-03

This is a fairly challenging text. It's currently being used in my undergrad PDE course, and the flow of material is a bit out of the ordinary. The book starts off with the method of characteristics and weak solutions, which are slightly more sophisticated and unusual topics than some of the later material, making it difficult to get started. The focus on using Matlab is nice, and most things are fairly well-explained. Typographical errors are rampant, however, making it very poor for self-study (you need someone to point out the errors to you).

All in all, not bad -- the second edition will hopefully be much better, and if you have a decent grounding in multivariate calc and ODE's, you'll be OK.

2 out of 5 stars An excellent rough draft of a textbook........1998-12-22

Cooper's book does some things quite well. While most courses on PDE's are reduced to repetitive applications of separation of variables and Fourier series, Cooper offers a new approach. He goes by equation rather than by technique, and introduces nonlinear equations and numerical methods very early. Separation of variables and Fourier series do not come up until Chapter 4. The first chapter, which reviews elements of analysis, is a very good reference. MATLAB is well incorporated throughout the text.

The reason I do not rate this book more highly is that the writing is unbelievably sloppy. There are at least five typos per chapter, usually more. Crucial things, like Green's first identity, are misprinted. There are dozens of typos in the answers in the back, which makes it very hard to check your work.

Judging just by the content, this is a very good book. However, the misprints in the math (to say nothing of those in the text) are so severe that I would not recommend buying it until a better-proofread edition comes out.

4 out of 5 stars Good job..........2002-02-27

This book lives up to its title. It is a good overview and reference for beginning Matlab users. It covers all of the basics and is a good place for the novice to start. This book is both reference and practice guide with lessons and exercises. As stated below, it will not be particularly useful for advanced users, but it doesn't aim to be. Matlab's applications are so vast, that it would take many volumes to cover all of its advanced capabilities across different disciplines.

The books that come with the software are extremely weak (by design) and the only comparable beginner's book I came across is the one they give you at Mathworks' training classes. Either way, this book is a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good for beginner..........2000-07-30

Although this book didn't cover many of advanced usages,it is very good for beginners. It is well organized and thin,so I caught up quickly and worked out my assignments by it. I recommend it to the beginners and who wants to learn MATLAB within a short period.

5 out of 5 stars Very good quick introduction.......2000-07-07

Well, I like this book, and refer to it often. It is concise, and written in a friendly way. There are some errors in it, but they are easy enough to spot. To me, this is an excellent book for the beginner to start with. Lightweight, yet gives a broad taste of MatLab's capabilities.

1 out of 5 stars Only if you "fear" Matlab.......2000-05-14

We all know the awesome power of Matlab, and if this powerintimidates you and you have never used Matlab (or Gauss, for thatmatter) before, you will get a taste of what Matlab is like and how it works in this book, which is written specifically for beginners.

But frankly, you'd get just as much -- and more -- information from the Matlab User's Guide, which comes ()with the software.() It unfortunately does not go beyond the most basic functions of Matlab, and at the end you will still be left wondering what Matlab really can do -- and what it can do *for you*.

Case in point: the discussion on functions (something that always intimidates me when I learn a new language/package) starts out easy, and suddenly becomes confusing, leaving the reader yearning for more information and more examples. The lack of good examples is another problem with this slim ()volume.

A good introductory book should be like DiIorio's "SAS Applications Programming": easy enough to NOT intimidate the beginner, yet deep and comprehensive enough to enable the reader to get real work done -- and to encourage the reader to learn more advanced topics. (After all, we use stats software like Matlab to get real work done, not just to impress our girlfriends.) While this book may seem "friendly" at the start, its total lack of depth unfortunately can make one feel even more intimidated about Matlab.

3 out of 5 stars Getting started, but that's about all.......2000-04-15

True to the title, this book is a leg up in Matlab if you have never used it before. However, unless you are working at the most basic level, this book will leave you wishing you had a more complete reference.

      Book Description

A greatly expanded and updated edition of the popular Introduction to the Mathematics of Biology (Yeargers, Shonkwiler and Herod, Birkhäuser 1996), this textbook aims to present mathematical biology as not merely the intrusion of one science into another, but rather as a field with a unity of its own. It retains and expands on the concept of the "computer biology laboratory,” giving students a general perspective of the field before proceeding to more specialized topics. The book is a product of extensive classroom experience, and the student response to it has been exhilarating due to its focus on problems of contemporary interest such as cancer, genetics and aging.

A unique feature of the book is its integration of a computer algebra system into the flow of ideas, in a supporting but unobtrusive role. Syntax for both the Maple and Matlab systems is provided in a side-by-side format. The use of a computer algebra system gives students the opportunity to examine "what if” scenarios, thereby allowing them to to grasp important mathematical and biological concepts in a way not otherwise possible. For students without access to Maple or Matlab, each topic presented is complete. Graphic visualizations are provided for all mathematical results.

This book focuses on problems of contemporary interest. It includes new chapters on parasites, cancer, and phylogenetics, as well as an introduction to online resources for DNA and protein lookups and popular pattern matching tools such as BLAST. One major new topic presented is that of genomics, a rapidly growing field. Just as mathematics once became indispensable for the study of physics, with genomics mathematics has become indispensable for biology. The discussion of genomics in this book also presents the many subdisciplines it has given rise to, and it introduces the emerging field of algebraic statistics as a powerful tool in genomics.

Mathematical Biology includes extensive exercises, problems and examples to help students grasp the concepts fully. A year of calculus is required to understand the material presented, while no previous coursework in biology is necessary. The mathematics presented proceeds from the simple to the more complex, while the biology proceeds from the study of populations down to the molecular level. Overall, the book will be appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students studying mathematics or biology, and it also lends itself well to self-study for scientists and researchers who wish to explore this exciting frontier of the applications of mathematics and computers in the natural sciences.

1 out of 5 stars Unacceptably naiive introduction - worthless.......2001-10-09

This book is less than worthless. It merely shows how to use matlab as a fancy calculator. It uses fancy terms in its chapters such as Weather Prediction, Flight Simulator, and what you get is a description of the random number generator !!
Totally unacceptable. You have been warned.

3 out of 5 stars Not For Experienced Engineers and Scientists.......2000-11-10

While this "text" a good introduction to MATLAB, the title of this book is misleading. There is an introduction to the methodology for solving engineering problems, an indication that this book is intended for an audience not yet familiar with technical problem solving. Further, there is a companion set of instruction materials available from the author. Clearly, the content, format, and style are, in fact, an introduction to MATLAB for college students. Practicing technical people should look for another book. This text is, however, an adaquate introduction for the college student, or someone unfamiliar with solving engineering problems. Not all the capabilities and features of currently available versions of MATLAB are covered. If you are using MATLAB 5.0 or later, again, consider another reference.

5 out of 5 stars A good start for MatLab.......1999-12-10

Very clear, well organized. Excellent for beginners using MatLab

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Start-Up Guide.......1999-01-31

Etter's introduction, although written for V4, provides a quick and easy startup for using MATLAB. Starting from the very basics, you'll find your view of MATLAB change from a seemingly-unfriendly application to an effective engineering tool. A must for first time users!
