Fascinating and practical.......2002-09-10
Each chapter is written by a leading expert from every major psychotherapeutic orientation, and offers a rich and easily understood description of the specific therapy. Each chapter contains the interesting reflections of these leaders on the nature of therapeutic process and change. The book provides a unique perspective of the main schools of psychotherapy, demonstrating their commonalities, and illustrating how they can complement each other.
The authors discuss the integration of EMDR with their own therapeutic approach. Although the chapters are distinct in style, emphasis, language, and perspective, all share the same format and focus. Each chapter contains explanations of what that approach brings to EMDR and what EMDR offers that approach. Case studies and session transcripts provide fascinating examples and clearly illustrate the integrative treatment process.
The treatment of a wide range of complaints is described. These include depression, social phobia, marital discord, anger dyscontrol, attachment disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, body image disturbance, and other problems. As a clinician, I appreciated the practical details that illustrate the integrative application of EMDR with these other modalities.
Authors and approaches include:
Francine Shapiro, EMDR
Dan Siegel, developing mind, interpersonal neurobiology
Bessel van der Kolk, somatic experience, subcortical imprints
Paul Wachtel, psychoanalysis
Nancy Smyth & Desmond Poole, cognitive behavioral therapy
Jeff Young et al, schema-focused therapy
Clifford Lazarus & Arnold Lazarus, multimodal therapy
Al Bohart & Les Greenberg, experiential psychotherapy
Florence Kaslow et al, couple & family therapy
Laura Brown, feminist therapy
Stephen Gilligan, hypnosis
Sheila Krystal et al, transpersonal psychology, eastern nondual philosophy
John Norcross & Francine Shapiro, integrative psychotherapy
The book also contains a summary of research findings and answers to frequently asked questions about EMDR.

A Handbook Of Spatial Research Paradigms And Methodologies: Clinical and Comparative Approaches (Handbook of Spatial Research Paradigms & Methodologies)
Nigel Foreman Manufacturer: Psychology Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0863778070 |
Book Description
Spatial cognition is a broad field of inquiry, emerging from a wide range of disciplines, and incorporating a wide variety of paradigms that have been employed with human and animal subjects. The contributing authors in both volumes of this Handbook are highly respected international authorities in their fields, with many years of experience, who describe and review the major paradigms used in their research area.
In Volume 2, authors consider the related issues of neurophysiological aspects of spatial cognition, the assessment of cognitive spatial deficits arising from neural damage in humans and animals, and the observation of spatial behaviors in animals in their natural habitats.
Both this volume and the previously released Volume 1, should be of interest to new and old students alike; the student new to spatial research can be brought up-to-speed with a particular range of techniques, made aware of the background and pitfalls of particular approaches, and directed toward useful sources. Forseasoned researchers they provide a rapid scan of the currently available tools that they might consider as alternatives when wishing to answer a particular "spatial" research problem.

Comprehension: A Paradigm for Cognition
Walter Kintsch Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521629861 |
Book Description
In this book, Walter Kintsch presents a theory of human text comprehension and extends his analysis to related areas. Comprehension is conceptualized as a two-stage process: first, approximate, inaccurate representations are constructed via context insensitive construction rules, which are then integrated via a spreading activation constraint satisfaction process. In Part I, the general theory is presented and an attempt is made to situate it within the current theoretical landscape in cognitive science. The second part addresses many of the topics that are typically found in a cognitive psychology text, including how word meanings are identified in a discourse context; how words are combined to form coherent representations of texts, both at the local and global level; what the role is of working memory in comprehension; how relevant knowledge is activated during reading; and what is the distinction between remembering a text and learning from a text. Researchers in the fields of psychology and linguistics will find this to be a most welcome contribution from one of the discipline's most celebrated scholars.

The Cognitive Structure of Scientific Revolutions
Hanne Andersen , Peter Barker , and Xiang Chen Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521855756 |
Book Description
Thomas Kuhnâs Structure of Scientific Revolutions became the most widely read book about science in the twentieth century. His terms â~paradigmâ and â~scientific revolutionâ entered everyday speech, but they remain controversial. In the second half of the twentieth century, the new field of cognitive science combined empirical psychology, computer science, and neuroscience. In this book, the recent theories of concepts developed by cognitive scientists are used to evaluate and extend Kuhnâs most influential ideas. Based on case studies of the Copernican revolution, the discovery of nuclear fission, and an elaboration of Kuhnâs famous â~ducks and geeseâ example of concept learning, the volume offers new accounts of the nature of normal and revolutionary science, the function of anomalies, and the nature of incommensurability.Customer Reviews:

The Dynamical Systems Approach to Cognition: Concepts and Empirical Paradigms Based on Self-Organization, Embodiment, and Coordination Dynamics (Studies of Nonlinear Phenomena in Life Science)
Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 9812386106 |
Book Description
The shared platform of the articles collected in this volume is used to advocate a dynamical systems approach to cognition. It is argued that recent developments in cognitive science towards an account of embodiment, together with the general approach of complexity theory and dynamics, have a major impact on behavioral and cognitive science. The book points out that there are two domains that follow naturally from the stance of embodiment: first, coordination dynamics is an established empirical paradigm that is best able to aid the approach; second, the obvious goal-directedness of intelligent action (i.e., intentionality) is nicely addressed in the framework of the dynamical synergetic approach.

Pragmatist Realism: The Cognitive Paradigm in American Realist Texts
Sami Ludwig Manufacturer: University of Wisconsin Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0299176606 |
Book Description
"An extraordinary critical analysis of the realist movement. Richly informed by philosophy and history."Emory Elliott, University of California, Riverside, editor of The Columbia History of the American NovelLiterary realists have often been dismissed by later writers of the modernist and post-structuralist schools for their lack of aesthetic sophistication and etymological naïvete. In Pragmatist Realism, Sämi Ludwig argues that the artistic quality of realist texts is better appreciated by approaching them from a cognitive perspective, rather than from a linguistic or formalist one. Ludwig notes that literary realism arose from the same cultural scene as the pragmatist philosophy of William James and Charles Sanders Peirce, and that cognitive psychology built upon pragmatist philosophy. He argues that the aim of realist writers, like that of cognitive scientists, is to track the arc of learning from experiences. Ludwig contends that this cognitive perspective is a useful corrective to other approaches to literary criticism that focus on textual hermeneutics. He argues further that the cognitive paradigm can enhance our understanding of literary representation, not only in realist works by Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Henry James, Charles Chesnutt, and others, but in literature generally.
"Pragmatist Realism offers an unprecedented synthesis of the `cognitive paradigm,' stretching from first-generation pragmatists, through Piaget and other cognitive psychologists, to recent research in cognitive science. Ludwig's argumentthat American literary realism can be illuminated by being placed in the context of this cognitive paradigmis original and persuasive."Jonathan Levin, Fordham University, author of The Poetics of Transition

Opens the door to creative thinking.......2001-03-19
This parable is an enjoyable little story focused on creative thinking within an organization. The story is a short illustrated cartoon that can be read in less than an hour, and illustrates how easy it is to get stuck in the comfort zone and how powerful and rewarding it can be when one taps into their creative spirit. This is not a deep read, but is a great reminder.
As the author of two books on creative thinking, I am always looking for other material that can be useful in my firm's creative work. I have found that this book is particularly good at reminding people of the importance of creative thinking, and how easy it is to get stuck doing...instead of thinking. C and The Box is a fun way to remind yourself of the power of creative thought.

An Effective 10 Minute Cartoon on Thinking Outside the Box.......2000-07-09
This book takes a different approach. It explains how we become comformists, and comfortable with that comformity. Then it shows the downside of that conformity -- namely boredom.
The parable then goes on to show how hard it is to use resources that can get you out of the box, but how rewarding it is when you do, and share what you learned with others.
I find that most people don't see themselves in a box, which adds to their stalled thinking. I found the parable to be fresh and effective at addressing the issues, much like Who Moved My Cheese? does.
Although the book is short and can be read quickly, I see that as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Be warned that the cost per word is high.
Be sure to read the two page epilogue. It has some ideas for helping you get out of the box. "Don't judge for a day." "Jump in a puddle." You will probably see one or two that will interest you, and that will help you out of the box.
Banish your stalled thinking! All you have to lose are your blinders!

The Holonomic Paradigm: Biophysics, Consciousness and Parapsychology
Keith A. Choquette Manufacturer: Xlibris Corporation ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1401043720 |
Book Description
There is consequential movement in the scholarly literature toward nothing less than a revolution in science. At the heart of this movement is an old idea regarding nonlocal hidden variables in quantum theory and new work on quantum coherence within living organisms. The latter provides a basis for integrating consciousness into physics which is a major concern of this book. Many leading researchers have also recognized that new approaches to quantum physics and consciousness provide a basis for understanding parapsychology. Data of several disciplines are brought together to explore this profound paradigm shift in modern science.

Bridging Paradigms: Positive Development in Adulthood and Cognitive Aging
Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275936171 |
Book Description
This volume examines positive development across adulthood with particular emphasis on postformal thought. The editors acknowledge that researchers have compiled a substantial body of descriptive evidence about the styles of thinking used by adults under certain conditions. The questions that remain are whether these styles reflect qualitative changes; how these styles develop; whether there are necessary precursors; why there is content specificity; what the relationship is to physiological or neurological development; whether adults can deliberately control postformal thought; how postformal thought develops in different cultures; what key developmental experiences, if any, are needed for postformal thought to develop; and what postformal thought means in a practical sense. These questions are addressed by the research and theory discussed in this volume. The contributors reflect a diversity of backgrounds assumptions, disciplines, and methods. Postformal thought and its correlates are described from physiological, psychological, sociological, anthropological, and clinical perspectives.
