5 out of 5 stars Good way to introduce the "birds and the bees".......2007-09-01

My son and I had the best laughs reading this book; somewhat embarrasing at time but it was all out there, he was able to ask questions and it was a great way to discuss these things with him as it is with any child. I highly recommend this book for 9 or 10 year olds if your ready to discuss such things with them.

2 out of 5 stars Offers too much detail in my opinion.......2007-08-23

Although I believe this book may be suitable for some kids, I do not believe it is suitable for my son and that is why I did not give it to him. Some pages from the book actually made me turn red! It is my opinion that kids do not need to know all the details provided in this book in order to get the message of where they came from. An edited version would work better for me.

5 out of 5 stars Covers the embarressing areas.......2007-08-23

This book does a great job at explaining why grownups like to have sex. It describes the feelings, without getting lewd.

3 out of 5 stars Where Did I Come From?.......2007-08-09

My son read this in addition to another similar book, and said that this book has less information in it.

5 out of 5 stars Just the facts.......2007-07-13

Great book. I had it when I was a kid and bought it for my niece and nephew. It's just the facts. With all the sex in the media and talk on the playground I think kids deserve to know the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-12

My son was so excited because we planted seeds a nd watched what happened in "real' life as explained by the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Young Curious Minds..........2006-05-30

As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better.......2004-09-12

We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift. I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses." There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show. It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts. "Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud. I say stick with the earlier books.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-04

I enjoyed this book very much because it is such a fun way to learn about science. This is the first of many Magic School Bus books I purchased, and I've been hooked ever since.

5 out of 5 stars So inspirational.......2007-04-07

This book is great for children and adults alike. It provides comfort in reflecting the truth of our being and purpose here on this Earth. I highly reccommend it to anyone who is interested in the enlightened approach to spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 10 STARS!.......2007-03-23

This book is an absolute MUST if you have children or grandchildren.
I have been exposed to Mr. Walsch's work over on over, and love it. However this book is trully written in an amazing way, that if I'd have to explain to my 3 year old where she comes from and what happend etc...I'd be lost for words! Its a MUST book together with the "Little soul and the Sun"

5 out of 5 stars Teach your Children Well.......2007-02-19

I only regret one thing, that I did not have this treasure book when I rreaised my oldest children. It is a critically required perspective that all children should have to live an abundant and happy life.

You'll never look at beetles the same way again. When masterful paper engineer Robert Sabuda works his pop-up magic, you're sure to find beauty and wonder in the thorniest of creatures. About 350,000 kinds of beetles creep across the surface of our world, but don't worry, Sabuda and cocreator Matthew Reinhart only include a few here, including dung scarabs (move the pages to "roll" the dung!) and the giant horned Hercules beetle of Central and South America. The colorful, metallic exoskeletons explode to life with every well-designed page, causing even the most beetle-phobic to marvel at their intricate anatomy. Funny, accessible sidebars ("Don't talk with your mandibles full") are sure to engage young naturalists in search of factoids about the eclectic, leggy group Coleoptera. To top it all off, each pop-up book comes with a paper frame with a plastic-encased, paper-engineered specimen of Phalacrognathus muelleri, the Australian stag beetle. (Beetles were not harmed in the making of this book.) A wonderful gift for the young naturalist on your list! (The Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook of Butterflies is also quite fetching.) 5 out of 5 stars My daughter.......2003-10-16

My daughter loves this book, not just because I love it. It came with a framed paper butterfly she absolutely loved. When I was reading it to her she was asking questions and was so into the book and she learned all about butterflies.

5 out of 5 stars 'Pop' Full of surprises.......2003-05-03

My soon to be four year old son (and Mommy) LOVES this pop up book. It is a wonderful work of art and informative! Two BIG thumbs up on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Beautiful, Fun.......2003-03-01

My five year old budding naturalist loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-11-29

I bought this book for my daughter last Christmas. We still read it at bedtime. The paper butterflies are beautiful and tough. The writing is factual and engaging and the butterflies have kept their shape and stood-up pretty well to little hands bending, pushing, and pulling. The paper butterfly which comes with the book is nice too. We also have the "Beetle" book, which is pretty spectacular as well.

5 out of 5 stars good GIFT Idea..."Butterflies:fluttering flowers; moths:all.......2002-07-23

LESS APPROPRIATE words are sometimes better. I will therefore apply the K.I.S.S. ("keep it simple, stupid/silly) principle with regard to my review for this lovely book--
"Young Naturalist's pop-up Handbook: BUTTERFLIES" will make both your heart and soul "FLUTTER!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Fun learning tool.......2007-07-14

Adults and kids who enjoy art and/or nature will find the books in this series enjoyable. You can simply enjoy putting colors together to create your own world of creatures or flowers (depending upon which book you order) or you can do the research and create a realistic world of color and beauty complete with learning the different names for the fish and under water foliage or the flowers or the butterflies etc in other books. Whether used as a learning tool or just for creative expression adults and children alike enjoy these books. I keep a selection of these types of coloring books around around the house with a very large selection of gel pens and markers for my neices and nephews and they come over frequently to visit while we all sit down to color, nothing else, Though I wouldn't sit to color a regular coloring book, these and the geometric or mandrel design coloring books are more on an adult level and I enjoy sitting with them as we chat about what is happening in their lives as we color. I believe they open up more because the coloring alows them to avoid the intensity of one-on-one coversations about emotional things in their lives. Open a door, sit and color with your pre-teen or teen and just be available to talk. You may be surprised at what doors you are opening, beyond the creativity of a child and yourself.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-04-11

I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Accurate, fun pictures........2002-01-17

This is a book which is accurate in its drawings, with the official names for many, if not all, the different species. I am an adult, a frustrated artist with no talent whatsoever for drawing. I have really enjoyed coloring these pictures with colored pencils. There is a lot of small detail work in some of the pictures, which I think would be difficult with crayons, but of course, all the detail doesn't need to be observed. I have loved this book and have colored 2/3 of the pictures. It is my favorite of the half dozen coloring books I bought. There are completed colored pictures of about a quarter of the drawings, which I appreciate very much, as it gives inspiration to those of us who would like to experiment with shading, etc.

5 out of 5 stars From the Desk of a Teacher.......2007-03-29

This book was great for my 4h grade class. It is written on their level and does describe how problems were solved on the Oregon Trail. It is an informative and easy read.

5 out of 5 stars ...If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon.......2001-10-24

We are homeschoolers, and are studying U.S. History. We used this book to compliment our studies of the Reconstruction and Reform Period. My children enjoyed the layout, as well as the information. They liked it so well, they usually read ahead of the scheduled assignments!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Book!.......2000-04-01

This book was wonderful to use in the classroom with my Fourth Graders! It is written so that they can easily read and understand it and provided realistic illustrations to support the text. While it is not a book that can be easily read in one sitting it goes along well with our study of the Westward Movement and was enjoyed by all the students. It was conducive to group discussion and covered all the aspects of the topic that the students wished to know from the question "What was a covered wagon?" to "Could they recieve mail along the way?". It lent itself to projects and assignments for the students.

5 out of 5 stars Ocean Life from A to Z (book & DVD).......2007-06-02

This title was originally purchased for the library that I work in. I reviewed the title for the collection and enjoyed it so much that I purchased a copy for my nephew. It is very informative as well as entertaining. The still photography and video are exceptionally well-done. I think it's a book and movie that kids will enjoy over and over.

Cynthia

5 out of 5 stars Great content, respectful presentation, and fabulous videography.......2007-05-24

Many science and nature videos aimed at children offer little more than pretty pictures. Most A-B-C films merely recite a list of words chosen to match the letters, dressed up with brief and painfully dull commentary. Imagine our delight (no, our amazement) at this combination of spectacular videography and deep. instructive narration. Annie's voice and narrative pace are well suited to young viewers, but she delivers a great deal of information in a way that respects a child's ability and desire to learn. Every creature she introduces is described in ways that make it clearly, fascinatingly different from the others. Our son insists that we be quiet so he can hear every word.

On top of all this information quality, the videography is simply gorgeous. I don't know how she finds such crystalline water and beautiful subjects but these are the best underwater images we've ever seen. We cannot recommend this highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Great book and DVD.......2007-05-07

My sisters and I loved reading the book and looking at the pictures. We saw the pictures come to life when we watched the DVD. We think that all kids will enjoy learning about ocean life if they have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Librarian Loves It!.......2007-02-27

I am a grade school librarian. I have read this book to all my pre-k -third graders and they love it! The DVD is a huge hit! My own four year old requests this DVD often! I give this book and DVD a definite thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful Gift for Kids and Parents Alike!.......2007-02-27

I love this Book/Dvd. What a great concept! It is my top gift to give to all the kids I know (and their parents). I am a Scuba Diver, and am always being asked to bring my pictures over to show my friend's children. This book is SO much better, and the DVD can be played along with, or separately from the beautiful, hard bound book.

5 out of 5 stars Really great for teaching Preschool Science........2007-10-03

One of the better "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1" series. Although I hate to recommend a book that doesn't really show you what's inside when it advertises "Search Inside."

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for elementary science teachers.......2007-04-05

This book is excellent at explaining and illustrating what is alive. It uses simple language and examples to let young children understand what things are living or non living. The information is age appropriate for elementary school children, but can be modified for younger children.

    5 out of 5 stars A primary teacher's "must have" book.......2006-11-10

I am an elementary school librarian and this book addresses one of the basic questions asked by Kinders and First Graders. I bought two for the library and our primary teachers are now ordering their own. Can't lose on this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-09-24

Living things eat, drink, sleep and grow - a simple explanation with examples that will appeal to most small children (e.g. cats, dogs, birds). Living things also die, and this is touched upon very briefly. I am always looking for books to assist me in homeschooling my 5 yr old son, and it's difficult to find educational books that don't bore or beat a topic into the ground. This was a satisfying choice.

5 out of 5 stars Children love it.......2007-10-09

We gave the book to our Grandaughter, who is a first-grade teacher, and the children absolutely loved it.
It was an excellent introduction to conservancy of species.

5 out of 5 stars Teach the Children.......2007-08-24

Turtle Summer is an excellent book for teaching children about the great loggerhead turtles and the people who care about the turtles and help take care of them.

5 out of 5 stars A spectacular book for outdoor education!.......2007-06-05

The perfect "nature awareness" book! The format of appearing like a scrapbook is captivating. I used this in my 4th grade classroom... much to my students' delight. They loved it! If you plan on going to the beach this summer, especially in the southeast, it is a must!
Ms. Monroe also has some adult novels that are terrific! The Beach House

5 out of 5 stars A delightful idea - scrapbooking at the seashore!.......2007-05-23

Turtle Summer, a Journal for my Daughter

This book presents a charming idea for a parent and child: to keep a nature scrapbook. Mary Alice Monroe has written and illustrated this enchanting journal of a mother and daughter's summer surveillance for loggerhead sea turtles on their beach. While watching the turtle nests, they observe and sketch nature's other offerings at the seashore. Like a family photo album, it is an intimate book.

Photographer Barbara J. Bergwerf teamed with Mary Alice Monroe to add exceptional and informative photos, including one of Carolina from the previous Sylvan Dell book, Carolina's Story: Sea Turtle's Get Sick Too! This is a splendid mixture of photos, drawing, and text. Children, ages 4 - 9 will relate to this book and its activities, hopefully clamoring to create a similar journal with their siblings and parents.

5 out of 5 stars Loggerhead Sea Turtles.......2007-05-10

Turtle Summer is an outstanding book which can be enjoyed by all ages, even though it is geared for children. The text is very accurate having been written by bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe and the pictures are something to behold. Barb Bergwerf is a superb photographer. Turtle Summer will be a book you will treasure and one you will want to give to all your friends who are interested in nature and our environment. It is a wonderful learning tool for children, too!
