Book Description

Jennifer McKinnon is convinced there are no more knights in shining armor-at least not in Manhattan. Little does she know that a hero of legendary chivalry waits her...800 years in the past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Charming Time Travel Romance.......2007-09-13

Jennifer MacLeod McKinnon has returned to her Manhattan flat to discover that it's been robbed for the third time topping off a perfectly disastrous evening. Not that it had started out that way Jennifer had been asked at the last minute to fill in for the extraordinary Victor Bourgeois to play a Paganini violin concerto, a dream performance. She'd been dressed like Cinderella and had attracted the attention of the gorgeous Maestro Michael McGillicuty, but the conductor had turned out to be no prince charming. Where to find a knight in shining armor? Definitely not in the Big Apple, so when Jennifer's big sister Megan invites her to England she jumps at the opportunity.

Eight hundred years in the past medieval knight Nicholas de Piaget is weary of his grandmother's attempts to marry him off to the fine ladies of the King's court. Not a one has been interested in him for more than his wealth. For all that, few could even overlook his murky past, and not since his stepsister Amanda had married another had any woman cared for the state of his heart. He's certain his fate is to grow old and fat in his run down, leaky castle until fate brings him into the path of a lovely, feisty, red headed damsel in distress.

Jen had made a stop in Scotland to visit her (many times removed) uncle, Jamie MacLeod, a seasoned time traveler and former medieval laird. There she had listened to tales of time travel and experienced a little sword play. In spite of her maps she'd gotten lost on her way back to England and stumbled upon a derelict castle which had given her the oddest sense of deja' vous. Still reeling from that feeling, Jen is stunned to realize that she's about to be robbed once more when she takes a step backward and finds herself in an even worse pickle. She's not in Kansas anymore and it's more than likely that she's about to be accused of witchcraft.

Fortunately Jen's not a stranger to time travel and luckily the de Piaget brothers are chivalry personified. Monty seeing her suddenly appear out of the grass is convinced that Jen's a fairy like his new brother-in-law Jake (modern day hero of Much Ado in the Moonlight). Older brother Nick notes her clothing and is sure she's of Jake's ilk. Unfortunately he'd paid little heed to Jake's wild tales of the future. One thing he knew for sure, if any of those stories were true the beauty who had stolen his heart at first glance would soon be scurrying for the next time gate back home.

But when Jen's gate fails to return her home, Nick begins to hope that he can buy the time to woo and win her. Jen unaware that Nick knows her secret fears she will lose him when he learns of the truth. But Nick has a secret of his own, the location of Jake's time gate. Will Jen forgive him when she learns that all he has to offer is a forever kind of love?

The Boar's Head Trio, Jen's three ghostly matchmaking ancestors are at it again! When I Fall in Love was a hilarious romantic romp as only Lynn Kurland can write. Poor Nick has to deal with his gloating siblings, his scheming grandmother, her shrewish marriage prospects and is forced to eat crow with his futuristic brother-in-law all while wrestling with his own conscience and losing his poor heart to a woman whose experienced luxuries he's never even dreamed of. Will a fortnight be enough to convince her that chivalry is more appealing than chocolate? When I Fall in Love is a charming tale that I highly recommend.

Now that all the McKinnons are happily wed, dare I hope that Zachary Smith will finally get his turn?

2 out of 5 stars My reaction- Pretty underwhelmed.......2007-09-04

I've been a fan of Kurland since book one, but I had a hard time making it through this novel. The writing was well done as usual, but the story didn't have much of a conflict or plot at all. I found myself bored about midway through. Her characters are beginning to fall into a sterotypical pattern, and there's no reality (I know, how much reality should I really expect in a time travel, right?) Here were my biggest issues:

For one thing- Jennifer is a flawless heroine and a paragon of virtue. That's great, except... I expect the hero and heroine of a good story to have their flaws in order to be able to grow by the end of the book. If there's no growth, what's the point in spending 400 pages with them? And how many women in their mid to late twenties are we supposed to believe remain virgins? You can write closed-door romance without turning the characters into unbelievably chaste angels who resist all human urges. Jennifer is a beautiful, red-blooded, modern woman, and the reader is supposed to believe she made it to 28 years old without going past the 'making out' point with any man, ever?

And finally- how is that through the entire story, which is largely taken up with Nicholas' angst over Jennifer's possible return to the future- after he's met her 14th century brother-in-law who lives in the 21st century, and has seen the ease with which Jennifer's family travels back in forth in time, does Nicholas not once stop to consider giving up his life and his family to go to the future with her? Why was it all her sacrifice to make?

This book just didn't do it for me. I expect better from Kurland- and her editors, for that matter- I think in the scene with Nicholas and Jake, Jake sat back in his chair 3 times in a 2 page stretch. It was nice to see old characters pop up, though I think it might have been excessive. I'm guessig for someone who has never read a Kurland book before, this would probably be impossible to follow.

All in all, I'm left feeling like I probably won't buy Kurland's next book, unless I'm out of all else to read. Very sad, since I used to eagerly look forward to each of her new books for months before they were released.

3 out of 5 stars Love the Author, liked the book but...........2007-07-16

the woman cried way too much. She cried because she was overwhelmed, she cried because she was sad, she cried when she was happy, tired, or hurt. She even cried when she was kissed. I counted a stretch of 17 pages between crying. that was about it. And of course, the obligatory line of "I'm not a crier" was stated several times. Umm.. yeah, she was.

5 out of 5 stars No smut, and none intended.......2007-07-09

Now, don't get me wrong. I love the smutty novels.
But when I am looking for straight romance, Lynn Kurland is my go-to girl. I have read all of her romances, many more than once. The characters stick with me, the stories are beautiful, the medieval detail is nice (and makes me want to improve my skill with the sword)and I often find myself sighing. Sound good? Read them all!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, Despite Being Long.......2007-07-07

I enjoyed this book for the most part. If you have not read other Kurland books, you will probably be lost with alot of the characters. She likes to keep them in new stories.

The book was a little long. Not her best, but, worth reading.

Book Description

No one said being a single mother was easy, but, after some difficult years, Sabrena Collins seemed to finally have it together. She had a good-paying job, two beautiful daughters who were growing up with love and security, and a wonderful friend who was more like the sister she never had. She even had a man in her life who was everything her ex-husband was not: kind, generous and caring.

Everything seemed perfect—except for one thing. Steve said he loved her, but he was unreliable. There was more than one night when Sabrena would lie in bed, waiting for the phone to ring…alone and crying silent tears.

But when Sabrena was in his arms and he looked at her with his melt-on-the-spot chocolate brown eyes, all the problems, the sleepless nights, the cold dinners, all of that was forgotten.

And then, suddenly, Sabrena’s world was turned upside down by a simple visit that led her on a frightening and unfamiliar path, that led her to a truth passion and words of love could not erase, a truth that would change her life forever. A truth that would test her faith, her courage, her strength, and above all else, her love…

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-05-23

This book is a good read. Had an excellent plot and real like characters.

3 out of 5 stars Book Club's Will Love This One.......2007-04-08

Read this book with interest from cover to cover. Found the characters's believeable and the story interesting. It was a Book Club selection, so I was not excited about reading it but found it remarkably easy to read and I felt I knew the characters. The book club discussion was not only entertaining but educational. Would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars For Men as Well as Women-- This is a Novel that MUST be Shared.......2007-04-05

My wife's bookclub was reading this book and after seeing the way that my wife devoured the book and could not stop talking about it, my daughter and I read it. We actually sat in on her bookclub discussion and I am a "macho" guy.

This book is life changing and really makes an impact. I appreciate the character development and the movement of the story. As a father and husband, I appreciate the way that women are portrayed as well as a mother's love. However, I appreciate that the author did not take the easy way out and paint the men as utter demons with no redeeming characteristics. The characters had depth and were alive as you read the pages. Finally, as a father of 2 boys and a daughter-- I have made this mandatory reading for Spring break for my family. We are going to have a family discussion as the issues raised merit time, energy and focus. Yes, my sons who are 15 and 12 will read this book and one has already started. Although the title takes men back and we don't want to neccessarily read this on the Metro.... it is one that we should all read.

I am suggesting that my church read this as well as I was drawn to how the author painted the picture of how society deals with HIV/AIDS. I can't say enough about this novel which was entertaining, kept my attention, great characters that I could relate to, humanistic, funny and REAL. This novel deserves even more exposure and I am committed to putting this in the hands of the people that I love.

Thank you to the author for writing a masterpiece--it is pure genius how she brings the health message in with fiction. I can't wait for her next novel and I don't regularly read books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-01-04

This was an excellent book from start to finish... I would definitely recommend this book.

Book Description

It's official: There is no longer a stigma associated with Internet dating. It's true. We promise. Nearly 50 million Americans have tried it. That means roughly half of the single adult population has filled out an online dating profile or has at least browsed a few personal ads, just to see who's out there. Quickly disappearing are the days of awkward setups and random encounters. Today's singles simply post a profile on a handful of dating websites, then sit back and wait for the dates to roll in. Well, that's the idea anyway. The reality is that most people slap together vague and uninspired dating profiles and quickly become disillusioned when "the one" doesn't respond the next day. In I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M BUYING THIS BOOK, Internet dating expert Evan Marc Katz—a former MatchNet consultant and avowed online dater—demystifies the world of Internet dating. He offers practical advice on choosing the right dating website, writing eye-catching profiles, striking up that first email "conversation," turning a first date into a second, and much more. Equal parts how-to guide and inspirational pep talk, I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M BUYING THIS BOOK is like having a chat with a good friend, in this case, a hysterically funny, insightful friend who tells it like it is while remaining cheerfully optimistic about the universal quest for love. Whether you're an online dating junkie or a complete newcomer, an enthusiastic twentysomething or a been-there-done-that divorcée, this irreverent and intelligent guide will teach even the most jaded single how to master the dating game and find true love online.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The first part of the title is right.......2007-10-05

If you buy this book, you may very well end up hitting yourself over the head with something near at hand (probably the book itself) and exclaiming "I can't believe I bought this book!" Luckily, the worthless book in question is also mercifully brief and bound in paper, so hopefully you will do no more than emotional damage to your psyche. That's about the only positive thing you will be able to say about the experience of either reading or hitting yourself over the head with this book. The written contents are a mix of the amazingly obvious and the horribly shallow and sexist. A good book on organic gardening is more likely to help you attract a romantic partner.

2 out of 5 stars outdated.......2007-07-24

This one is easy to read and does have some tips if you know NOTHING about internet dating. However, much of the information is outdated and not very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The proof is in the RESULTS.......2007-06-03

There is a right way and wrong way to go about online dating. I had been doing it the wrong way. Some of the tips he gives I had never even thought about before and realize he is exactly right. This is one of the rare books I intend to read again just to make sure everything sinks in. Anyway I have been heeding his advice and there is no greater proof that it works than by the results I have been having...CUTE women contacting me and responding to me. I have a date this week that I am actually looking forward to going on.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource........2007-03-02

I thought this book contained information on dating relations via the internet that no other book on the market has displayed. I really enjoyed reading it and found loads of information--for a man or a woman. The authors really seemed to know their stuff and gave out vital information. This book came highly recommended and I was glad I bought it. [...]

5 out of 5 stars With respect.......2006-07-18

Evan Marc Katz has created a warm, witty, inviting book that brilliantly describes pearls and pitfalls of online dating. He discusses the sensitive emotional and interpersonal issues' dating online imposes on singles, and offers practical suggestions and compassionate support. This book is an invaluable resource for those singles dating online. If you want to laugh out loud while learning about online dating, it is a must read!
(My professional opinion)

However, I'm single, over 35, and while this book was a gift, I haven't laughed this hard about basic dating skills in a long time. I read it because Evan Marc Katz was actually my gift (too bad for all of you that only got the book). Seriously, Evan's coaching was a present to me from a friend who thought I needed a little assistance finding love online. After working with Evan, I realized all the little things really do matter. He taught me that in a game of numbers, you have to stand out otherwise you may not get noticed by the people you want. The book is educational to anyone with an open mind, and who isn't jaded and cynical simply because they are over 35 and not yet married. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Patterned on the outstanding success of I Love a Cop, this is the first book of its kind written exclusively for fire fighters and their families. Challenging two-dimensional stereotypes, Dr. Ellen Kirschman portrays fire fighters as they really are: complex men and women doing one of the world's toughest jobs and trying to fit comfortably into two families-the one at the firehouse and the one at home. I Love a Fire Fighter takes us on a journey from stationhouse to four-alarm blaze, from a harrowing ride with paramedics to a family dealing with shift work. Along the way, Dr. Kirschman addresses occupational health and safety issues along with domestic concerns including unpredictable schedules, lack of communication, and anxiety. Vivid anecdotes and practical tips show families how they can pull together when job stress threatens to spill over onto home turf, and shed light on what spouses and partners can do to help themselves, their mates, and their children live with the "best job in the world."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some good points..........2007-06-05

First, I'll counter J. Brown's review above - the book does not exclusively apply to male firefighters, but given that the vast majority of firefighters in the world are men, it does focus primarily on that.

Now, moving on to the book. I am a (volunteer) firefighter, grew up in a fire family, and work as a 911 dispatcher. I'm pretty familiar with this side of the fence. I bought this book for my significant other, who occasionally has some issues with my running out at all hours. I decided to read the book before I gave it to her, because I wanted to be sure it was worth reading and a fair description of things. Kirschman obviously spent a lot of time on her research and has a pretty good grasp of things - not perfect, but far better than most.

The book makes a lot of good points. It goes into detail about a lot of our daily grind, the things we face, and the ups and downs of the fire service. She obviously tried to understand what we do. No, she didn't do a perfect job, but I don't expect that from someone who is doing research and doesn't feel the call.

She makes quite a few good suggestions - learn to listen, learn to read moods, and decide how much you *really* want to know about what we do in our days. The social network (support network, she calls it) is a major aspect of the fire service, and while she suggests working to grow it, she doesn't make a lot of suggestions how.

My biggest gripe? It seems like Kirschman has a bit of an ax to grind about women in the fire service. I'll make it clear, lest someone call me sexist. My mother was a firefighter. One of my best friends is a female firefighter. I really don't give a rat's hind end what gender you are or what plumbing you have - I need to know that when bad things start happening I can trust you (male or female) to do a job to protect all of us.

So. If you're a firefighter, get this book for your loved ones. If you're a firefighter's loved one, you owe it to your relationship to get this book. Emergency services are hard on relationships. This is a good start.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book Every Fire Fighter and Family Should Own!.......2007-05-19

My husband was a volunteer fire fighter when we met. I had a hard time dealing with constant fire and EMS alarms and the fact that he would put himself in a potentially dangerous situation. Some of the guys on his department recommended this book to him for me so I bought it. I absolutly loved it. I even joined my hometown volunteer department after I had read it to get a better understanding of what he does. I fell in love with fire fighting just as he did. We've been together a couple years now and were married a few months ago. We both belong to my department now and he has just been elected training officer. If it weren't for this book I may have given up on something really great in my life. It touches on all parts of fire fighting no matter if you are a female or male fire fighter. This book is a must have for all fire fighters and their families.

2 out of 5 stars Book was written about FireMEN not FireFIGHTERS............2005-12-08

I heard about this book and was going to buy it, but from what I read it seems to refer to the Firefighters as male. Being a FEMALE Firefighter, I was going to buy it for my loved ones to read, but felt that it really did not apply to me. What a huge disappointment. Just when I thought there was a book to help people understand what it is like to live with a Firefighter, I find out that it only applies to the loved ones of the Male Firefighters. Sorry, this isn't supposed to be a Women's rights kind of blog, but we are into another whole millenium...is it still not known that there ARE female firefighters out there???

5 out of 5 stars A necessity for friends & family of FireFighters.......2005-11-09

Even though I completed this book I will keep it on my nightstand regardless. After reading "I Love a Fire Fighter", I feel so much better about how to relate to my Fire Fighter husband. I really feel prepared to handle his highs and lows as well as the dangers he faces every day. This book is such an invaluable tool, and I really loved the individual stories by real-life fire fighters and their families. My husband also read the book and found it highly enjoyable and realistic.

It was an easy read that didnt give a bunch of doctor jargon. I highly recomend this book to anyone that lives with a cop, is a cop, or just wants to understand what its like to be a cop.

I was assigned this book to read in one of my AJ classes and I'm really glad I did. I will be the cop in my family, not the spouse, but there are still important things to think about for the cops themselves. My husband has started to read it to know what he should be prepared for.

I think this book will prevent, maybe even help resolve, marital problems in cop families. It's important to know how eachother are feeling about the career, and sometimes things go unspoken. Ellen Kirschman will help you find those words you need to say.

I only gave it 4 stars because I don't really like her writing style. It was choppy and ambiguous in parts, in my opinion. Some of it was hard to get through- not because of the content, but because of the writing style. Needless to say, it doesn't take away from the main point of the book.

I highly recommend this book to cops and their families.

5 out of 5 stars I only wished.......2006-02-28

I only wished this book had come out 20 years ago. I also grew up in an LEO family and this book touched on a lot of things that I encountered growing up. Child of a cop growing up in the city that he worked in. This book shows people even outside of the thin blue line what really happens on the homefront.

5 out of 5 stars "I Love Our Earth" is an amazing little book .......2007-08-07

Dan Lipow's visually impressive photography combines nicely to illustrate and showcase the informed and informative text co-authored by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson in "I Love Our Earth", a 32-page introductory survey to the wonderful sights, sounds and colors of the earth for children ages 3 to 6. From deep oceans, blue skies, and blowing winds, to the snows of winter, to the sunlight of summer, to the multicolored leafs of autumn, to the palate of colors in the budding blossoms of spring, "I Love Our Earth" offers a cornucopia of celebrations with respect to what the Earth has to offer as experienced through the eyes and imaginations of children. "I Love Our Earth" is an amazing little book that should be a part of every elementary school and community library Nature Shelf for young readers.

Irma is feeling left out because all her friends have boyfriends(except Cornelia :( )so she gets determined to find one. Will's dad comes into her life again and her mom isn't too happy about it and Will is in training for a compition with Mandy. I though it was a good book but they could have introduced a new villian or something. :\

Jane Goodall might be a household name for most grownups, thanks to her pioneering work with chimpanzees and more recent efforts at habitat preservation. But many kids don't know the Goodall story and will love this chance to hit the ground in Tanzania and learn about the remarkable scientist and her beloved chimp friends. With dozens of vintage photographs, Goodall recounts her early research in Gombe National Park, including a recap of her childhood and how she came to know Louis Leakey and first enter the bush. With clear and careful prose, Goodall explains her findings about chimp communities and communication, the role of hierarchies, and what sort of threats chimpanzees face today. Best of all, Goodall's account always keeps curious young readers in mind, even relating some of her mistakes, such as when she became too close to her subjects and interfered with her own research.

Young protoscientists will appreciate Goodall's frank descriptions, from kerosene-can-assisted dominance displays to her discovery that chimps engage in hunting and warlike behaviors, and hopefully, such detail will inspire further interest in the future of chimpanzees and other threatened species. Proceeds from the book will go to Roots & Shoots, a "grassroots environmental and humanitarian education program for young people" under the Jane Goodall Institute. Because "hundreds of roots and shoots--young people like you--around the globe can break through and make the world a better place for all living things." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Book Description

As a child, Jane Goodall dreamed of living with the wild animals of Africa. As a young woman, she amazed the world with her groundbreaking discoveries about chimpanzees, which she documented in her acclaimed National Geographic television specials. Ever since, Dr. Goodall has campaigned unceasingly for the protection of the chimpanzee now an endangered species. This moving, personal account will inspire readers of all ages to join in her vital work.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Goodall tells about her chimpanzees to a new generation.......2004-01-01

My father subscribed to both "National Geographic Magazine" and their related series of books, the most memorable of which was about Jane Goodall's study of chimpanzees in Africa. The story of her work and the photographs of Fifi, Flo, Flint, Gremlin, David Greybeard and the rest were so enthralling. Many of those photographs, such as the one of infant Flint watching his mother Flo fish for termites and showing that man is not the only tool-using animal, are collected in "The Chimpanzees I Love: Saving Their World and Ours," which Goodall uses to introduce her exciting work to a new generation of young readers.

When she was a child Jane Goodall decided she wanted to go to the jungles of Africa and study its animals. Today she is one of the most renowned and respected scientists on the planet, having dedicated her life and work to the study of a community of chimpanzees at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania. In this fascinating book Goodall recounts her exciting adventure in making ground-breaking discoveries regarding chimpanzees and their profound similarities to human beings. She also talks about her struggle to protect this endangered species and their vanishing habitats.

Most of "The Chimpanzees I Love" looks at the Goodall's study of the generations of these chimpanzees, where we follow individual chimpanzees from babies to adulthood. Goodall provides simple descriptions of her discoveries, and often points out her own mistakes (naming her subjects was not exactly a scientific practice). Chapters are devoted to how she first made contact with and was accepted by the chimpanzees, how they communicate within their community, the relationship between mothers and babies, what a day in the forest is like, and the mind of the chimpanzees. At that point Goodall gets into the plight of the chimpanzees, including a distressing look at their lives in captivity and how they are being sold in markets in Afrcia. All of the proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to support of Goodall's international grassroots educational program, "Roots & Shoots."

"The Chimpanzees I Love" is both informative and inspirational, which is what you expect from Jane Goodall, who is one of the people who truly defined idealism for a lot of young kids in the Sixties. The idea that Flo's daughter Fifi, who was a little infant when Goodall began her studies, is now around forty years old and has had her eighth infant astounds me. But the one I miss is Flint, the first wild chimpanzee whose development was documented from birth through death, who turned out to be as much a child of the Sixties as the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Secret circle the initiation.......2007-05-07

I bought this book in a second hand book it is a briellient story and enjoyed reading it very much.

5 out of 5 stars I adore these books.......2006-07-01

I first read these in high school and now atleast every 2 or 3 years I read them again. This time around (I'm 27 now) when I had the urge to read them I couldn't find them. I really wish they would make them into a movie trilogy! It's just a great read if you love nature and magic and remember being 16 and in highschool. I hope I read this until I am an old grandma and can get lost in time and pretend I am cassie!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful young adult book.......2006-04-11

I love this trilogy. I've loved it since I was about ten, and I still love it. It has pride of place on my bookshelf, and every now and again, I go back and re-read it.

In this first book, Cassie Blake, a highschool junior, finds herself suddenly uprooted when her mother moves them back to the tiny Massachusetts town of New Salem. They move in with her grandmother, and before long, a girl at Cassie's school has been murdered and Cassie has taken her place in the mysterious 'Club', a group of teenage witches who can trace their lineage all the way back to the days of the Salem witchcraft trials. Add to that is the menacing and beautiful Faye, Cassie's growing attraction to her best friend's boyfriend, and the search for the coven's lost Master Tools, and you have yourself a gripping and fast-paced start to a thrilling young adult trilogy.

That's not to say that the story doesn't have its problems, one of which is the somewhat underdeveloped secondary characters. Even this is excusable, however, given that there are eleven of them in the coven itself, not to mention various relations and townspeople. If nothing else, most of the coven members are clearly defined and given at least a few pages of close attention, such as the bike ride with Deborah in the second novel. Overall, a very satisfactory read, and well worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars I loved these books.......2006-02-14

When I was about 13 or 14 I read and re-read these book over and over again. I even recorded them on tape so that I could listen to it while I was out and about.

I loved this trilogy.

Everyone can relate to Cassie in feeling different in a group and in this day and age magic is really popular, so this trilogy is the best for those that are coming of age in this time period when we are obsessed with darkness and magic, etc.

I plan on buying a new set because I wore my old set (given that was 13 years ago) out.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2005-07-12

I first read this book when I was 12. For some reason I was not able to get ahold of the next two books in the series. Well, the ending left me so curious to know what happened that I felt compelled (at the age of 24) to track down the next two books in the series to find out what happened. I have to say that I enjoyed reading it the second time as much as I enjoyed the first. The characters are all well formed and interesting. These books are an excellent synthesis of religious accuracy and compelling imagination.
