    Book Description

What is the impact of an infant's diminished hearing on the infant and its parents? How does communication develop in cases of diminished hearing? How does diminished hearing affect social and cognitive development? What types of early interventions can improve communication and development in infants with diminished hearing? The World of Deaf Infants presents the results of a 15-year research study that addresses these questions. Through their research, perhaps the largest, long-term comparison of deaf and hearing infants, Meadow-Orlans's team provides a comprehensive and intimate look into the world of deaf infants. For a core group of 80 families that includs all four combinations of parent-infant hearing status, data was collected longitudinally at 9, 12, 15, and 18 months, and mother-infant interactions were recorded and observed in both structured and unstructured settings. Mothers' facial, vocal, and tactile behaviors during interactions were related to infants' temperament and stress; mothers' linguistic and communication behaviors, as well as their overall responsiveness, were related to children's language; and the effects of support provided to mothers were evaluated and explored. The results were dramatic, particularly those on infant attachment behaviors and the importance of visual attention to the overall development of deaf infants. This comprehensive work provides a foundation on which researchers, teachers, students, and parents can build to improve communication, cognitive and social development, and to enhance the world of deaf infants.

    Book Description

Ben was a bright, happy little boy. Yet he was easily distracted, he wouldn't make eye contact, and he couldn't comprehend the simplest things said to him. At age three he still hadn't started talking. Finally, Karen Foli knew she had to act, and she took her son to a speech and hearing clinic.

What the clinicians reported chilled her: Ben's speech and language were delayed by one to two years. Testing results and speech therapists suggested problems that included the words "probably retarded and perhaps autistic." But Karen, trusting her mother's intuition, knew that Ben was intelligent and that he was frustrated by his inability to communicate, so she continued to try to help her son. She discovered that he possessed the hallmarks of auditory processing disorder, the aural equivalent of dyslexia.

Like Sound Through Water is the story of Karen's struggle to get Ben the help he needed to learn the most basic skill of all: to communicate with the world. She ran the gauntlet of medical disbelievers and pediatric therapists who refused to understand the very new ?ndings of auditory processing disorder. Even her husband, a psychiatrist specializing in children's af?ictions, had never heard of APD. Despite this, he kept a steadfast faith in his son.

Now, after years of intensive treatment for APD, Ben is an academically successful, hardworking little boy with a bright future to look forward to. Like Sound Through Water is a testament to a mother's love and her devotion to her son's care; it is also an instructive journey for those who are discovering the world of APD and a guidebook to negotiating the land mines of its treatment. Above all, it is a beautifully written tale of hope and optimism.

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book.......2007-07-25

The book was insightful, easy to read. I couldn't put it down. The book is written from the family's perspective as their child is identified with a disorder. It relates the family's stuggles for correct diagnosis, treatment and support. A must read for early childhood specialists who assess and work with young children with special needs.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for teachers.......2007-05-25

Because I couldn't NOT find out how their journey turned out, I was up until midnight last night with Karen Foli, Ben, and their family. Besides being Every Mom, Foli is a solid thinker, a strong communicator, and a mystery writer. This book unfolds like a popular novel, so you stand right next to the protagonist as she unravels the issue of APD, finally getting diagnoses and treatment.
This book is on my short list for young teachers, along with Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence, Expecting Adam: A True Story of Birth, Rebirth, and Everyday Magic,Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Anger, and Impulsiveness, and Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences. Like many of these books, Like Sound Though Water reflects how rapidly improving technology can and should change the way we teach. Like all of them, this book will help teachers empathize with families. APD can be very frustrating for everyone, including harried classroom teachers. When you've worn yourself out trying everything to hook a kid, it's easy to blame family or the kid himself. This book will help you keep your eyes open for other causes for classroom difficulties.
Okay, now I'm going to get on my soapbox: I think one of the reasons I had to stay up so late reading this was that I was internally screaming "Someone get this kid to an audiologist!" I was totally not surprised that the first person to recognize processing problems was a lady who ran a little church basement kindergarten, and I firmly believe that if Foli had Ben in a public school first, the problem would have been identified sooner. Public school teachers are required to have more training and diversity in our student population is not just country of origin. We've seen more.
Anyway, great book for all readers but especially parents, teachers, and medical folks.

5 out of 5 stars From one mom to another.......2007-03-25

My 3rd grade son was just diagnosed with auditory processing disorder and I found this book to be informative and a pleasure to read. My son's condition isn't as severe as the author's son's; however, I could identify with her frustrations before the diagnosis. The author brought up 2 new treatment strategies that I was unaware of-Fast ForWord and Earobics. I have already recommended this book to friends and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in APD.

2 out of 5 stars Clueless in Indiana.......2005-06-08

I find the events surrounding Ben's development tragic. With a psychiatrist father and nurse mother, they ignored SIGNIFICANT signs. Toe walking, unintelligable speech at THREE, severe separation anxiety, textural issues with food, sensory overload. This book makes the case for effective early intervention, being an effective advocate for your child (stop denying and placing blame on the husband) and finding the right resources. Newsflash: APD is NOT new and the lack of evaluators and educators who were unfamiliar with this learning disability is alarming.
This book was self-indulgent. One got tired of reading the distances traveled to get Ben evaluated and help. If that's what it takes when you have a special needs child, then that's what you do. Glad I got it from the library and didn't pay.

5 out of 5 stars VERY TOUCHING STORY.......2004-12-30

WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH SEVERAL EVALUATIONS WITH OUR NOW FIVE YEAR OLD SON. THESE DOCTORS PROBABLY COULD FILL WALLS WITH THIER DIPLOMAS, YET NO ONE COULD TELL US WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEIR ANSWER - OVERALL DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY CAUSING SPEECH DELAY. WE SOMEHOW KNEW BETTER. I READ THIS BOOK AND CRIED KNOWING THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WERE GOING THROUGH. THE BOOK IS VERY TOUCHING TO READ ANOTHER MOTHER'S ACCOUNT OF STRUGGLING TO HELP HER SON. WE FINALLY SAW A SPEECH THERAPIST WHO SPECIALIZES IN CPD - SHE RECOGNIZED THE SYMPTOMS RIGHT AWAY.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK ON AUDITORY PROCESSING FOR PARENTS.......2007-10-14

I love this book as even the title has been very helpful in explaining the unique challenges that face my son to family and teachers.

Information about Auditory Processing Disorder is not wisely available. What is out there is brief, repetitive and minimal. I find lot of textbooks at a cost $100+/- but this is the only lay person book I have found that does the subject juctice.

Even Speech Lanuage Therapist do not have a good undertanding of this disorder unless they specialize in it. We wasted 9 months with a SPT-CCC who thought she know how to treat it - but really didn't. She just used a mixture of Language Processing techniques with poor results.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I have read it several times and keep learning from it.

If you looking for information about Auditory Processing Disorder - someone you love must be suffering from it and for that I am so very sorry. As a mother of a son with it life is challeging for our whole family, but especially him. Finally, realizing what was "wrong" has helped a lot. I am relieved that he isn't incorrigible, but that there is a medical explaination.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parents!.......2007-08-11

I bought this book because my daughter was diagnosed as probably having Auditory Processing Disorder (she's too young to take the auditory tests yet). We were very worried that she might be on the autism spectrum but she is so social and doesn't do the stereotypical "lining up" or wheel spinning type play and she doesn't do any stims...it turns out that she has APD.

This book is a great resource. I've loaned it to her teachers at her regular preschool and her summer camp to help them understand how they can better help her. It's easy to read and understand and is SO helpful for understanding the nature of the problem. A definite buy for any parent whose child has APD or any teacher who suspects they have students with APD.

5 out of 5 stars Better late than never........2006-04-11

It's taken a long time for this disorder to be recognized for what it is and it still has a long way to go in becoming more well known. The book is not an easy read, but then the disorder is not easily diagnosed either. Hopefully someone will write about Central Auditory Processing Disorders to suppliment this complex and intensive book for the sake of learning how to explain this highly unknown handicap to those who have trouble understanding that it is not a hearing loss problem but rather an auditory information processing difficulty.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2004-06-09

This book is indispensible for the audiologist/SLP/parent/professional working with APD. I only wish we could have read this one BEFORE the text books in grad school..would have made much more sense. Very nicely written, presenting of scenarios was important...more info to assimilate to your childs difficulty. May of seemed cut and dry to some, but if it was not, you would be reading the unabridged version and toting it on wheels. Not everyone uses the same categorization strategy...but that is the beauty of research and ongoing learning...take some info from each and you are well rounded. Maybe those who chose to go only half way through the book and not PAST the case studies to the theraputic ideas are the same ones hoping for a quick remedy. This disorder takes time and patience and an informed parent. Good Luck..... challenges and good times are ahead. Thanks Terri for giving us all a small part of you....A fellow CCC-A

5 out of 5 stars Read the Whole Book Before you Review It!.......2004-04-23

For the reader who said that this book is depressing, consists entirely of case studies, and provides no concrete information regarding diagnosis or, especially, treatment, I couldn't help but notice that you wrote your review when you had only read half of the book. Read on! You will find specific recommendations for diagnosis, understanding APD and its relationship to language and learning, and tons of treatment approaches that offer hope for children and adults with APD. The case studies serve to illustrate how these disorders affect people in the real world, and you may see yourself, your child, your parent, or your spouse in them. But this is the only book written for the layperson that really, truly does provide guidance that is scientifically sound from a world renowned expert in the field. Next time, please read the whole book before you review it!!

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable collection of studies and research into the psychology, lifestyle, and personal adaptation of deaf children.......2006-04-06

Inner Lives Of Deaf Children: Interviews And Analysis by Martha Sheridan (Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at Gallaudet University) is an informative exploration into the lives and minds of deaf children based upon interviews with seven very different deaf children between the ages of seven and ten. Outstanding for its exclusive perspective and invaluable documentation of a deaf child's struggles in contemporary society, Inner Lives Of Deaf Children is an invaluable and seminal collection of studies and research into the psychology, lifestyle, and personal adaptation of deaf children. Inner Lives Of Deaf Children is very strongly recommended to parents, teachers, social workers, counselors and anyone else involved in the lives of deaf children.

5 out of 5 stars Good info. Easy read........2005-04-13

Inner lives of deaf children is an informative book that is easy to read. The author, Sheridan, grew up deaf so she has a personal connection to the subject. The book starts out with background information on the deaf community and the author. This helps you understand the deaf world better. Sheridan then explains how she conducted the deaf children's interviews. The bulk of the book consists of Sheridan's interviews of deaf children. She provides the actual transcripts of the interviews, allowing the children to speak for themselves instead of forcing her own interpetation. Throughout the interviews Sheridan provides little summaries that help the reader keep track of the main points along the way. She selected children with different backgrounds and communication methods so that the diversity of the deaf community would be better represented. At the end of the book, Sheridan neatly wraps up the results of her interviews; she provides the reader with a better understanding of what it is like for deaf children to grow up in today's world. I highly recommend this book.
