Book Description

This reader collects the texts, videos, and computer programs--many of them now almost impossible to find--that chronicle the history and form the foundation of the still-emerging field of new media. General introductions by Janet Murray and Lev Manovich, along with short introductions to each of the texts, place the works in their historical context and explain their significance. The texts were originally published between World War II--when digital computing, cybernetic feedback, and early notions of hypertext and the Internet first appeared--and the emergence of the World Wide Web--when they entered the mainstream of public life.

The texts are by computer scientists, artists, architects, literary writers, interface designers, cultural critics, and individuals working across disciplines. The contributors include (chronologically) Jorge Luis Borges, Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, Ivan Sutherland, William S. Burroughs, Ted Nelson, Italo Calvino, Marshall McLuhan, Billy Kl?Jean Baudrillard, Nicholas Negroponte, Alan Kay, Bill Viola, Sherry Turkle, Richard Stallman, Brenda Laurel, Langdon Winner, Robert Coover, and Tim Berners-Lee. The CD accompanying the book contains examples of early games, digital art, independent literary efforts, software created at universities, and home-computer commercial software. Also on the CD is digitized video, documenting new media programs and artwork for which no operational version exists. One example is a video record of Douglas Engelbart's first presentation of the mouse, word processor, hyperlink, computer-supported cooperative work, video conferencing, and the dividing up of the screen we now call non-overlapping windows; another is documentation of Lynn Hershman's Lorna, the first interactive video art installation.

5 out of 5 stars Rosetta Stone of Hypertext.......2004-06-15

This huge tome is a must have for anyone who wants to deeply understand hypertext and its precursors. From William Burroughs to Doug Englebart and Augosto Boal to Ted Nelson this book presents a huge range of articles (and discursive commentary) of interest to computer scientists, writers, new media workers, artists and everyone in between. This is one stop shopping for new media literacy with over 800 pages of good stuff, much of it very hard to find outside of this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2003-03-18

Fascinating, thorough in its analysis, beautifully designed reader/player. Good, well-rounded selection of texts and new media objects with no attempt to be exhaustive (to the editors' credit). I plan to use it as one of the texts in an upcoming university course.

Book Description

Incisive analyses of mass media – including such forms as talk shows, MTV, the Internet, soap operas, television sitcoms, dramatic series, pornography, and advertising—enable this provocative new edition of Gender, Race and Class in Media to engage students in critical mass media scholarship. Issues of power related to gender, race, and class are integrated into a wide range of articles examining the economic and cultural implications of mass media as institutions, including the political economy of media production, textual analysis, and media consumption.

Ten new, original essays are included in this text, along with compelling previously published articles and book chapters by both established media scholars and new voices in the field. Together with new section introductions by Gail Dines and Jean Humez, the readings provide a solid yet accessible critical introduction to mass media studies.

Features:

Original essaysand important reprinted articlesfrom renowned scholars comprise this comprehensive and diverse volume . Work in cultural studies and queer theory is made accessible to undergraduate students . Extensive bibliography and media resources encourage conscientious activism. Race is examined throughout the text rather than treated in a separate chapter.

New to the Second Edition:

  1. Expanded coverage of "queer" representations in mass media
  2. New section introductions provide readers with a guide for each section
  3. New section on the violence debates and a new section on the Internet
  4. Two sections devoted to consumerism, marketing, and advertising

Recommended for courses in mass media, feminist theory, race, class, and gender, and social theory in the Sociology, Communication, and Women’s Studies disciplines. Also recommended as a general reference title for scholars and anyone interested in the representation of race, class, and gender in the media.

3 out of 5 stars Wow... are we not spellchecking or editing books anymore??.......2007-06-21

First, let me say that the premise of each article was great for a 400- or 500-level college course and prompted many heated discussions.

But, along the lines of the other reviewer... how are we to take it seriously when we come across dozens of grammatical errors, missing words (the most prevalent error) and punctuation disasters? It read as though the articles were submitted, read by a third-grader and then stuffed hurriedly into the book for publication. A quick read by the "editors" would have found the vast majority of errors.

This is not something isolated, for 3 out of the 4 textbooks I have been assigned this summer session have dozens (yes, "dozens") of grammatical, typographical and punctuation disasters -- books well into their 2nd, 4th and 7th editions. No wonder kids graduating college habitually spell "too" as "to."

Fix the errors before you print the third edition!

2 out of 5 stars Fair information, edited by a twit........2004-02-15

I could not finish reading the book, because I could not take the authors seriously. The many misspellings and mechanical errors were far to distracting. This text is a worthy example of how NOT to write a book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse for post-modern media theory........1999-09-14

As the media becomes one of the most dominant means by which we frame our social reality, it becomes crucial for each of us to understand how media can become a mean to someone's own end. An excellent treatment of hegemony and dominant/ prefered readings. This should be a required text in all communication/ social science programs. But it ain't bad readin' for anyone else who consumes media either, namely you!

5 out of 5 stars Media, stereotypes, white ideologies, marginalization........1999-01-11

An excellent reader explaining the media's role in perpetrating common stereotypes of historically marginalized people. Includes analysis of advertising, sexual representation, TV and music. An excellent textbook for cultural studies.

4 out of 5 stars best text reader ever for my communication major.......1998-12-06

broad and complete view point on the issues that face college critics in media fields. Most comprehensive text I have been required to buy with my major. Would highly recommend to other prof.s

Book Description

This grammar offers a completely new approach to the study of Sanskrit, aimed at students with no previous specialist knowledge of the categories of grammar. It is a stimulating and infectious approach, designed to cultivate rapid and lasting enthusiasm for Sanskrit.
Important features of the work are the use of connected passages for exercise which are intrinsically more interesting and challenging than the unrelated sentences found in other grammars; the great deal of attention given to the explanation of the Devanagari system; and the extensive appendices and glossaries in a separate volume.

2 out of 5 stars way too much vocab per chapter!!!.......2007-07-31

This book has great explanations; it's a good grammar with good stories. BUT, there's about 80-100 words to learn per chapter! How could anyone possibly absorb this? There is a Thomas Egenes book out there and another book called Samskrtam Subodhini: a Sanskrit Primer. These two books are your best choices, the former being slow and divided up into two books and the latter being quick paced with a lot of vocab at times but also with a lot of exercises. I went to the library and took a look at this book and was disappointed. It seems most people that study a language are going to want a decent vocabulary but it's not going to happen when there are mountains of it to learn at a time. Save your money for a good Sanskrit Reader like Lanman after you're done with one of the two I've already suggested. You'll be happier and still have a few bucks to spare.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK FOR LEARNING SANSKRIT.......2007-07-30

This is by far the best book for learning Sanskrit. Every lesson has an excellent introduction to grammar and the notes always give a curious aspect of Indian culture, plus the texts are very well presented. I've tried dozens of manuals and am every day more grateful with Mr. Maurer. His explanations are always clear and charming. The only thing a solitary student may regret is that this manual has no key to the exersises. But if you work hard (which you always should do if you want to learn Sanskrit) you will see all the answers you need are within the manual, and all the words and grammar tables you need are available in the second volume. Coulson's "Teach yourself Sanskrit" has keys, but the grammar is very dense. Maurer's method comes in 2 parts and is expensive, but is really really worth it. You will enjoy learning this enchanting language very much.

5 out of 5 stars THE Sanskrit Beginner's Book!.......2006-04-01

In my opinion as a Sanskrit teacher there is simply no better text ever written. As other reviewers have noted the content, the high quality of the Devanagari font etc. make this a sine qua non for the beginning student. To Prof. Mauer I say: "Uttamam!"

5 out of 5 stars Superbly writtten........2003-02-03

I love this book for its organization, its exercises, and its explanations. It makes learning Sanskrit easy, and is evidently a labor of love by it author.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of Sanskrit.......2000-02-19

I have seen a few others and tried using one of them, but this set by Maurer is easily the best I have come across. The script is easy to read and the grammar is carefully presented to make it possible for the beginner to start using and enjoying the language immediately. Additionally, the second volume provides a historical overview of the language and other Indo-European tongues, all the conjugational and declensional paradigms, and a two-way dictionary for easy reference. It's expensive - the author sacrificed his royalties to force the publishers into a hardcover - but well worth the money.

Book Description

Approaches to Peace provides a unique and interdisciplinary sampling of classic articles and short literary selections focusing on the diverse aspects of peace and conflict studies. Readings cover the causes of war and proposed means of preventing it, so called negative peace, and also reflect upon the universal concern for positive peace. The material examines nonviolence movements, peace movements, religious inspirations, and our future prospects for peace. Contributors include Johan Galtung, Kenneth Boulding, Elise Boulding, and Alva Mydral. Contemporary pieces by Jonathan Schell, Richard Falk, Betty Reardon, and Vaclav Havel, and timeless classics from Leo Tolstoy, the Bhagavad Gita, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Thoreau are included as well. The book's balanced and unbiased approach makes it easily adaptable to both general discussions of peace and conflict as well as the rapidly changing issues of the moment. Approaches to Peace is able to stand on its own as a foundation text in any introductory peace studies course. It is also compact enough to use as a supplement with more specialized readings, allowing instructors to assign additional readings consistent with their own particular orientation. Each selection is prefaced by a short introduction highlighting the author's background, the work's historical context, and the selection's significance in terms of the "big picture." Study questions and a list of suggested readings at the end of each selection also provide a useful resource for students.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best, but still falls a bit short.......2004-03-25

I've used David Barash's _Approaches to Peace_ several times in my college classes on peace and justice. This is unusual in itself, because I rarely use anthologies, preferring instead to go straight to the original sources themselves. I like Barash's approach, though, because it tries to be inclusive as possible.

The anthology begins by looking at the definitions and possible causes of war, moves on to analyses of how to prevent war (negative peace), then to considerations of how to create structures of justice that eliminate the necessary conditions for war (positive peace). The rest of the book is devoted to readings that discuss nonviolence, religious pacifism, and historical peace movements. All of these general categories are exactly what one would want in a "peace studies" text.

The problem is that the readings included in each category aren't always the best (or at least aren't the ones I would've selected). The single best two sets of readings are in the chapters on positive peace and nonviolence. The single worst (and I do mean *worst*!) set of readings are when Barash deals with religious pacifism (it's as if he feels uncomfortable in this arena). In the section on peace movements, Vaclav Havel's essay is the single best piece, but one wonders why it (and perhaps the entire chapter) doesn't serve as the prologue to the anthology.

Still, no anthology perfectly pleases everyone. Barash's is the best one out there I've discovered. Perhaps some changes will be made in a second edition. Regardless, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

The Fourth Edition of Reading French in the Arts and Sciences offers a systematic approach to comprehending and translating texts in the humanities and technical disciplines, focusing on the grammar needed for this task. It begins with short passages on familiar themes and gradually increases the difficulty level to more technical and literary topics.

The text includes:

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2006-02-13

I am writing this review from the viewpoint of someone who already speaks French and wanted to learn how to translate. The sad fact is that skill in the former does not necessarily promise skill in the latter. Stack asks: are you accurately translating ALL of the ideas in the original text into the next language? Does the result sound like natural English as written by a native speaker? His lessons in French grammar as well as translation exercises make this book a definite keeper (and while I already spoke French before I picked up this book, it was recommended to me by an engineer who had minimal French under his belt and merely wanted to be able to understand some written French that kept cropping up on the job).

Amazon lists this book's language as being English, and while this is true for instructions, half of it is in French including some very long passages.

The book starts out, however, explaining French structure: cognates, noun gender, definite and indefinite articles, irregularities, adjectives, adverbs, personal pronouns, personal pronouns as subjects, and moving right up into the different verb tenses. Included with every lesson (which is itself about a dozen pages, easily doable one per week) is a list of new vocabulary. Readings are from a variety of sources, from technical writing to Pascal and Descartes. There are translation exercises that stress keeping the original French's intent and ideas when turning it into English.

What I particularly loved about the book was the footnotes, especially when a new word could have multiple meanings (which could of course change the entire meaning of the sentence). Additionally, I, like many other learners to French, was taught the language almost solely through literature and poetry. Stack's book is therefore a welcoming addition for learning mathematics and the sciences through this language. There are also tests in the back (along with a French word index) for further understanding of each lesson, a boon for extra classwork or the self-studying student.

Will you be fluent in French by the end? No. This book is for gaining profiency in WRITTEN French. However, this is a good supplement for someone who is learning to speak the language as well, or for someone like myself who wants to learn translation. What really helped me in honing my translation skills was the way Stack focuses on NUANCE: the multiple meanings of a word, the differences between sentence structure between the French and the English (thus teaching the reader how to make a French phrase, even when translated into English, sound like it was originally written by a native English speaker), the emphasis on transitional words and unique French phrases (i.e. letter closings).

In particular, Stack stresses the importance of vocabularly, citing that a greater knowledge of words helps to accurately translate subtle differences (i.e. "slap" sounds harsher than "hit"). To that end, Stack introduces a LOT of vocabulary that you won't have learned in French 1, if you have any formal introduction to French at all. This is a primer on French in the arts and sciences, so there are lots of welcome vocabularly lists pertaining to things like physics, probability, geometry, linguistics, and references to Greek mythology (which come in useful for the excerpts from Voltaire).

Really, I can't laud this text enough.

This book is a little expensive (I also purchased my copy at my university's bookstore). Amazon's is definitely the better price than your local university's. Either way, it's one of the welcome additions to my translating bookshelf.

If you are beginning to gain a working knowledge of written French, you should also purchase, in addition to "Reading French in Arts and Science", a good bilingual dictionary (the vocabularly list at the back of Stack's book is good but nowhere near comprehensive).

4 out of 5 stars A little dry in content, but I learned how to read French!.......2000-02-09

I used this book as a textbook for an undergraduate course in Reading French. Not speaking, just reading. Since I already knew Spanish and was familiar with Portuguese, it was not hard for me to understand the language. However, my speaking ability is still non-existent. I just cannot wrap my mouth around French pronunciation.

The practices are grouped together very clearly. The vocabulary focuses on technical terms. Therefore, metaphors and literary complexity is not a problem here. Sometimes I wondered if I would ever have the need to describe a steam engine to anyone in French! Our class divided into groups to go over the exercises which were at just the right level for beginners. Several, like me, already knew Spanish. One spoke Italian. One spoke Portuguese, and one spoke German. Others knew English only. We combined our skills to use this book and learned how to read French.

    Book Description

UNLOCKING HARRY POTTER gives you five essential keys for understanding the HARRY POTTER series. Not just who will live or die in DEATHLY HOLLOWS, but how J.K. Rowling created the most successful books of our times. To understand the story behind the stories, John Granger, author of THE HIDDEN KEY TO HARRY POTTER and editor of WHO KILLED ALBUS DUMBLEDORE?, introduces the themes and patterns Rowling uses to write books that resonate with readers of all ages. This book is for "serious readers" but Granger writes in a very entertaining style. If you never understood the term "postmodernism" or how "literary alchemy" is used by great authors from Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling, then this is a fun way to learn. UNLOCKING HARRY POTTER is the only book to examine in depth the importance of what Rowling said in an interview from 1998, that "to invent this wizard world" she had to learn about alchemy "in order to set the parameters and establish the stories' internal logic." - . - . - . - . - Here's what other HARRY POTTER authors and experts have to say about UNLOCKING HARRY POTTER: - . - . - . - . - "I got so hooked I had to stop everything else and just read, read, read. I carried it around the house, read it while using the excercycle, I hid in rooms away from the action of daily life so I could take it all in. I haven't had that reaction to a book since, well, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. A spectacular read for all serious fans of Rowling's works. Compelling, well-argued, fun and funny. Engaging. Thought provoking. Erudite." - Tom Morris, author of IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC and PHILOSOPHY FOR DUMMIES. - . - . - . - . - "John Granger peels back the layers of Rowling's stories and sees patterns the rest of us miss - and he never forgets to be a fan, engaging in fun speculation about what will come in the finale. Once more Granger has shown himself to be second to none among Potter commentators and literary sleuths. Some books are meant to be ingested quickly. Not this one. Serious fans of HARRY POTTER will relish it." - David Baggett, editor of HARRY POTTER AND PHILOSOPHY.

I purchased this for my grandson, who at 91/2 is an exceptionally bright boy.
Neither he nor his father were able to make heads or tails out of this purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a much more serious reader now.......2007-08-17

Very early in the book John Granger recalls Professor Moody's trunk with 7 locks. Each time Dumbledore inserts a key into a different lock the trunk opens and contains different items. This book is exactly like that trunk! I have read or listened to every Harry Potter book (except Phoenix) more times than I can count and yet each time that Granger brings out a new key my reaction was "I didn't know that that was in there!" I even understand now why I didn't enjoy re-reading Phoenix (the alchemical "black" stage of the series)as much as the other books.

I didn't read this book until after I had read Deathly Hallows and I still truly enjoyed reading Granger's predictions. Some of them were spot on, while others weren't, but the premises on which they were based were solid. I had to laugh at one point, when a reference was made to the sun/Sol and moon/Luna coming together as part of an alchemical wedding. It wasn't precisely a prediction, but in Deathly Hallows Luna certainly did arrive at the wedding wearing brilliant yellow, "sun colors."

The best part is that I can reread the entire Potter series one more time, with a new perspective, and be assured of appreciating details that I have missed before.

4 out of 5 stars Unlocking Harry Potter: Five for the Serious Reader .......2007-08-14

I have seen the books' author on tv, I like the way he divided the book in 5 parts so you can understand about Harry Potter.

4 out of 5 stars good read even AFTER finishing the HP series.......2007-07-28

If you've already finished "Deathly Hallows," and you think this book is now obsolete, think again! This author's take on how Rowling thought while writing the HP series is fascinating and highly educational. Granger could teach a college course on the post-modern literary aspects of Harry Potter, and students would have to go on a wait list just to sign up for the course. Though Granger, I think, would be an annoying prof. His narrative voice has an edge of sarcasm and snobbery - which is hilarious and incredibly irritating at the same time.

Throughout reading this book, I was also fascinated with how on-target were many of his predictions for the "Deathly Hallows" book. At times he is way off-base, and other times you think he must have had an advance copy because he is so precise in his insights about how Rowling will think in crafting the 7th book. I learned a lot about this fascinating series - why I was duped by Rowling in almost every single book, why the themes are so compelling across 3 generations of readers ... and I was left wondering if we will ever again see a book or series like Harry Potter in our lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars COLLEGE LEVEL READ.......2007-07-23

This book is for those who are serious about literature. It is designed for college educated or those who read at the college level. I have a Master's Degree though not in literature. Parts of the book were a challenge to understand.

      Book Description

This engaging reader consists of 57 edited articles, divided into seven parts. Part I establishes the importance of examining race as a contemporary social issue. Part II establishes the analytical frameworks that are now being used to think about race in society. Part III examines the most immediately experienced dimensions of race: beliefs and ideology. Part IV examines racial identity and interracial relationships, topics that are especially interesting to students. Part V analyzes the importance of the political economy of race, showing how the economic exploitation of racial groups is buttressed by political arrangements in the state. In particular, the racial division of labor is supported by concepts of citizenship that deny full rights of citizenship to certain groups. Part VI details the consequences of race and racism as manifested in different social institutions, including work, family, health, housing, education, and social justice. Each section includes articles examining the outcomes within social institutions that stem from the reality of racial inequality in society. Part VII focuses on social movements and social change.

        Book Description

From Hannah Arendt 's "banality of evil " to Joseph Conrad 's "fascination of the abomination, " humankind has struggled to make sense of human-upon-human violence. Violence in War and Peace: An Anthology is the only book of its kind available: a single volume exploration of social, literary, and philosophical theories of violence.Edited by two of anthropology 's most passionate voices on this subject, Violence in War and Peace is a sweeping collection that looks at various concepts and modes of violence. Drawing from a remarkable range of sources, the editors juxtapose the routine violence of everyday life---what scholars Taussig and Benjamin have termed "terror as usual "---against the sudden outcropping of unexpected, extraordinary violence such as the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, the state violence of Argentina 's Dirty War, revolution, vigilante "justice, " and organized criminal violence. Despite the impulse to distance ourselves from such acts, Scheper-Hughes and Bourgois take care to remind us that concepts of violence and aggression have often failed to acknowledge symbolic and structural forms. Yet, the most violent acts often involve conduct that is socially permitted---even encouraged---rather than condemned as deviant. In Violence in War and Peace, the editors offer a thought-provoking tool for students and thinkers from all walks of life: an exploration of violence at the broadest levels: personal, social, and political.
