Five Stars With no Doubt........2007-03-15
During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!
very useful handbook.......2007-01-04
Very helpful book in engineering job, but unfortunately I've found some mistake (the reason for 4 stars).
In general you can find lot of formulas in this book. This book is also very well known and that's the reason for recommending it. You can just refer to Roark's formulas and everybody knows what's that.
Great Reference Tool.......2006-10-29
This Book contains every fromula that i would ever need during my Mechanical Engineering Course.
It is quite easy to use, and the print is clear the index is user friendly
Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions.......2006-04-18
I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.
The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.
This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.
The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.
My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-01
Roark's has been and remains an excellent resource for the structural engineer and designer regardless of the edition. This is a referance I use on a daily basis. Typically the first book I reach for.

Customer Reviews:
New & Improved? NOT.......2005-09-16
I have access to Peterson's original book (older than me?) and to the first edition of this one, published in 1974. I recommend buying used copies of the old ones. They contain the same info and are easier to use since the charts are bigger.
Guide to Stress Risers and Other Structural Phenomena.......2003-12-22
Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.
AN EXCELLENT BOOK.......2000-06-29
This is an excellent book. I found the book to be extremely informative and thoghtfully written. I recommend this book for anyone that is interested in applications of stress and strain analysis.
Peterson's Stress Concentration Factors, 2nd Edition.......2000-06-29
The definitive book of stress concentration factors...updated from Peterson's original edition. This is the ultimate source for aerospace engineers dealing with design and analysis. Other engineering disciplines should find it equally useful. The book is more compact, yet thicker than the original but the the figures are very clear and readable. Explanations appear much the same.
Book Description
The leading text and reference on wood design, updated to include the latest codes and data
Continued the sterling standard set by earlier editions, this indispensable reference leads you through the complete design of a wood structure (except for the foundation), following the same sequence used in the actual design/construction process.
Customer Reviews:
Design of Wood Structures ASD/LRFD.......2007-03-12
Excellent. Very well organized and numerous examples. I have followed this author from 3 of his previous editions of this book.
The Most Connon typ of Construction.......2007-03-03
Now in it's sixth edition, this book has become the standard text on the design and construction of buildings made of wood. While most wooden structures are residences, the book also covers multi story wooden structures such as apartment houses, commercial buildings with wooden roofs, and to a limited extent newer techniques such as glue-laminate beams.
The book is suitable for use either as a text for a course or as a reference for self study. The sixth edition of this book was promoted by five major developments:
1. Publication of new dual-format (ASD/LRFD) wood design criteria in the 2005 National Design Specification for Wood Construction.
2. Publication of the new Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) Supplement to the NDS.
3. Publication of the comprehensive ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction.
4. Publication and increased adoption nationally of the 2006 International Building Code. ==5. Publication of updated load standards in the 2005 edition of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures.
Product Description
The new ASCE Standard 7-05 Standard (including Supplement No.1) provides requirements for general structural design and includes means for determining dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, and earthquake loads, and their combinations that are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. A detailed commentary containing explanatory and supplementary information to assist users of ASCE 7-05 is included. This ASCE 7-05 edition is a complete revision of ASCE 7-02. The new Standard includes revised and significantly reorganized provisions for seismic design of structures, as well as revisions in the provisions for determining live, flood, wind, snow, and atmospheric ice loads. The inclusion of Supplement No. 1 into ASCE 7-05 ensures that there is full and complete coordination between the 2006 International Building Code and ASCE 7-05. The updates which comprised Supplement No. 1 are seamlessly integrated into the 7-05 volume, and are not available anywhere else. ASCE 7-05 is an integral part of the building codes of the United States. The earthquake load provisions in ASCE 7-05 are substantially adopted by reference in the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. Numerous other provisions of all other ASCE 7-05 sections are also adopted by reference by both model building codes including the provisions for calculating wind loads and snow loads. Structural engineers, architects, and those engaged in preparing and administering local building codes will find the structural load requirements essential to their practice.
Book Description
This book combines the essential components of Braja Das' market leading texts, PRINCIPLES OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING and PRINCIPLES OF FOUNDATION ENGINEERING. It includes the fundamental concepts of soil mechanics as well as foundation engineering, including bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations (spread footings and mats), retaining walls, raced cuts, piles, and drilled shafts. Intended as an introductory text, the book stresses the fundamental principles without becoming cluttered with excessive details and alternatives. While featuring a wealth of worked-out examples and figures that help students with theory and problem-solving skills, Das maintains the careful balance of current research and practical field applications that has made has made his books the leaders in the fields.
Customer Reviews:
A very basic, easy-to-read book..........2003-06-03
A good book for those looking for a very basic, easy-to-read, book. It does have exercises after each chapter, which is good for students. However, many of them are very "repetitive"; the only difference between them are the numbers used in them. I should add that there aren't much challenging problems; most of them are easy.
The book doesn't go deep in some important topics. In some cases the theory seems to be just a "brief intro" to the topic, rather than a real discussion about it. Of course, this does not mean it's a bad book... but it should be taken into account (as the title says) that it deals with the very "fundamentals" of geotechnical engineering.
Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering.......2000-11-04
It's excellent book for introduction to Geotechinical Engineering. Only problem I had with this book is that I was not familiar with SI units, but you will get use to it later as you solve some problems by yourelf. There is occassional typos errors with example problems and equation you may need to be careful. Other than that it is still the best book I've read in regards to Geotechincal subject. The book is generally easy to read and understand.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING!.......2000-04-22
This book explains to you all the basic principles of geotechnical engineering step-by-step. It also includes excellents examples and exercises to help you to understand better each theme, but you shouldn't have problems..because it's so simple to understand.

Book Description
This book takes a fresh, student-oriented approach to teaching the material covered in the senior- and first-year graduate-level matrix structural analysis course taken by civil engineering majors. Unlike traditional texts for this course that are difficult to read, Kassimali takes special care to provide understandable and exceptionally clear explanations of concepts, step-by-step procedures for analysis, flowcharts, and interesting and modern examples, producing a technically and mathematically accurate presentation of the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2003-10-24
2D and 3D matriz analysis of skeletal structures well described. It is a must for graduate, undergraduate and professional Civil Engineers. I strongly recommend this book for those who are interested in computer applications in strucutral analysis.
No much to say. Just Amazing!.......2003-09-23
You just need to read it! The way Mr. Kassimali explains the background of the structural analysis using the stiffness matrix method supplied with many examples and flowcharts is simply the best. This book really teaches. A must for structural engineer!
"Hands on" Matrix Analysis of Structures.......2002-06-22
This book is a must for a structural engineer who wants to have a better understanding of how computers are used to perform structural analysis. The author explains precisely how computers are used to analyze 2D and 3D trusses, beams, frames, and grids in a language a working engineer can understand. This book has the reader participate in the process of understanding matrix analysis of structures by supplying flowcharts and examples that are accurate and easy to understand.
Also, the author discusses the flexibility and stiffness methods as well as finite-element formulation using virtual work to explain matrix structural analysis. And what I like about this book the most is the fact that the author explains in a step-by-step manner precisely how to write and test a working matrix structural analysis program in any computer programming language.
Solution of 2D and 3D Structures.......2000-11-25
This book solves 2D and 3D structures using Stiffness Method. For the 2D structures, it starts off with trusses, then beams and frames. Next, for the 3D structures, space trusses, space beams i.e. grids and space frames are introduced. Special cases such as pin-jointed members or member releases, temperature and fabrication error effects and support displacements were considered in this book. Usually, a structural stiffness matrix's size is Z x Z where Z is 2 times the number of joints for 2D structures. However, in this book, Kassimali's structural stiffness matrix size is DOF x DOF where DOF is the number of directions a joint can freely move. Thus this reduces computer memory storage. This book also comes with a CD-ROM with 6 programs for solving 2D and 3D trusses, beams and frames. Highly recommended for Structural Engineers wanting to write their own Structural Analysis software using Stiffness Method as good flowcharts are presented in this book. There is only 7 pages on Flexibility method. Special topics and modelling techniques are introduced such as nonprismatic members, semirigid connections, inclined roller supports etc. are presented in this book.
ORDERLINESS IN CHAOS-THE MATRIX.......2000-09-27
This book is very good for the fact that it focusses on the methods of analysis of structures using the matrix methods. It is shown nicely how matrix methods using the stiffness and flexibility methods simplify the methods of analysis of structures. One unique quality of this book is that the flowcharts used are easily understandable and hence it becomes easy for a student to actually do programming and get the results of analysis in a very quick time.Putting everything in matrix form makes students realise some orderliness in chaos and that greatly helps, in understanding the concepts and i would say that this book was totally successful in doing this job.
Book Description
This clear, comprehensive presentation discusses both the theory and applications of mechanics of materials. It examines the physical behavior of materials under load, then proceeds to model this behavior to development theory.
Combines a fluid writing style, cohesive organization, outstanding illustrations, and dynamic use of exercises, examples, and free body diagrams. Offers a four-color, photorealistic art program. Features Hibbeler's hallmark triple-accuracy checking and Procedures for Analysis sections. Available at the same price as the fifth edition.
A useful, thorough reference for engineers.
Customer Reviews:
BLess his Heart.......2007-02-13
Hibbeler is probably the most reliable author when it comes to Mechanics of Materials. A must have for Mechancial, Environmental, Civil and Materials Engineers. Explains everything in the easiest and most practical matter, without skipping anything of value.
Best textbook I've ever had.......2006-01-17
Simple, concise, great examples, great illustrations, great problems. The style is: present a topic briefly, derive equation(s) quickly, show 3-4 examples of using said equation(s), give a couple dozen problems, and move right on to the next topic. Thanks Mr. Hibbeler, for making engineering students' lives just a bit easier.
a first course in mechanics.......2004-12-25
Hibbeler offers an undergraduate text for the mechanical engineering student. The materials studied are solids, not fluids. The discussion starts with the simplest case of treating the bodies as totally rigid. Then we see a development of Newtonian mechanics, commencing with statics. No net velocities, in some obvious reference frame.
But even in this simple case, Hibbeler shows the student how to find the balance of forces in such archetypal instances as beams.
Later, he talks about how solids can to varying extents resist stresses. Be these longitudinal or torsional stresses. The resultant stress-strain relationships are a fundamental concept in mechanics, and the student should be able to follow the treatment quite adequately.
Book Description
The revised Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, SEI/ASCE 7-02, gives the latest consensus requirements for dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, ice, and earthquake loads, and their combinations, that are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. SEI/ASCE 7-02 is a revision of ASCE 7-98. Revisions incorporated in SEI/ASCE 7-02 include significant changes made to the following sections: general provisions, load combinations, live loads, flood loads, wind loads, snow loads, earthquake loads, and atmospheric ice loads. The Earthquake Load Provisions in SEI / ASCE 7-02 are, for the first time, now substantially adopted by reference in the 2003 International Building Code and the 2002 NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. Numerous other provisions of all other SEI/ASCE 7-02 are also adopted by reference by both model building codes including the provisions for calculating wind loads and snow loads thereby making SEI/ASCE 7 an integral part of the building codes of the United States.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Beginning Process Engineers.......2006-09-19
This is a very thorough book that leads you through the entire redesign process. I especially liked Chapter 10, "Document Processes", as it is a good place to start the book. This is a very good book for process redesign training - not too detailed to bore training participants, but thorough enough to provide the trainees with a solid process redesign foundation. Packed with useful information and very, very good illustrations - examples that bring the point home. After reading this book, a good follow up is "Business Process Improvement Workbook" by Harrington, Esseling and van Nimwegen ....
Good for process redesign team.......2004-10-06
The authors introduced comprehensively a lot of important topics in process redesign effort, such as core processes identification and performance measurement. These are good to any process redesign team.
The weakness is that there is no clear roadmap by the sequence of content in this book. Many chapaters show in-depth explanation, but looks lack of logic once put into practices. This confuses many process redesign teams.
The best entry level book on the subject.......2004-07-28
A few years back, I developed a jones over process improvement. I went to a few national book retailers and a large respected university bookstore and researched Amazon to examine different texts on the subject. When I came accross this text, I was immediately taken by its clear descriptions and practical advice. It supplements the specific topics with useful tables and workplans. There exists more thorough texts on most of the topics. For example, volumes have been written about reengineering or continuous improvement. However, the vast majority of people looking for guidance will find more than enough information here. Another nice thing is that the authors don't waste time trying to persuade the reader, as some other books do, that these topics are important. They simply and clearly describe the subject at hand and show how to implement. The brevity, clear descriptions, and inclusion of only the most relavent information make this book a must-have for anyone who is concerned with process improvement.
Satisfactory.......2003-01-10
I use this book to teach business process management for the MBA class. It does not have the depth or rigor of a textbook, but does a decent job of addressing the major issues.
Comprehensive and full of excellent info & ideas.......2001-05-27
I got this book based on a friend's recommendation because I was struggling with a process design application called iGrafx Process (also available from Amazon).
I learned that there is much more to process design than basic models based on entry, task, validation and exit criteria. For example, performance measurements and performance efficiency were two areas where this book strengthened my understanding of process design and implementation. They also and enabled me to effectively use iGrafx Process to its fullest.
Other chapters that taught me a lot addressed improvement planning, continuous improvement and process benchmarking. I was able to immediately incorporate the knowledge gained into processes that I was developing, and it made a significant difference in the quality of my work.
The best chapter, in my opinion, was in installing the improved processes. I gained a lot of knowledge and techniques for overcoming barriers and how to objectively measure the degree of improvement. This was reinforced by material that is provided in the appendices, including case studies and an excellent description of Six-Sigma analysis.
Overall, this is a valuable book to anyone who designs or implements new processes, or reengineers existing ones. Most of my work is new design and implementation, so that was the context in which I read the book. If I were assigned to a reengineering project this would be the first book to which I'd turn for guidance and information. It earns a solid five stars and a permanent place in my professional library.

Customer Reviews:
Overrated - This book is "broken".......2007-10-13
GOOD: The book does an excellent job presenting steel concepts and is adequate in concrete.
POOR: As an instructor for structures courses for architects, this book is simply disastrous. The wood section, also, is incomplete. Errors run rampant through the book's text, examples, and problem solutions through the book. Even within the same edition, book answers can vary book to book. Furthermore, current methods are mixed with the old leading to an incorrect presentation of the subject matter. In short, this book falls far short of the reputation which preceded it.
A very good book for the beginner.......2007-04-11
The book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis well, mainly statically determinate structures. The book also covers design fundamentals for various materials, mainly: wood, steel, concrete and masonry.
I used an earlier version of this book many years ago, as an introductory book. The book is good for the beginner.
Simplified for better understanding.......2006-11-05
This Book is excellent. easy to read and understand. this book has given me all the info i needed and then some. i highly reccommend this book!!
Excellent introductory book.......2000-04-05
This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry) followed by the design of the structural system for a building. I first used an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduate degree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The present edition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of the earlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections and updating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis is placed on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and there are numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book is excellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis and design or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for a while and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the first step and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to follow up on this with other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's "Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steel structures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's "Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders".
