Book Description
Faced with increasing global competition, every industry, business, and service organization is restructuring itself to operate more effectively. Cost-effectiveness and product reliability without excess capacity are the keys to successful activity in business, industry, and government, and these keys are the end results of methods engineering.
The 11th edition of Methods, Standards, and Work Design provides practical, up-to-date descriptions of engineering methods to measure, analyze, and design manual work. The text emphasizes both the manual components and the cognitive aspects of work, recognizing the gradual decline of the manufacturing sector and the growth of the service sector. The importance of ergonomics and work design as part of methods engineering is emphasized not only to increase productivity, but also to improve worker health and safety, and thus, company bottom-line costs.

Great Book.......2007-09-11
Learn alot from the book about Project management. It does not only apply to management but apply to daily life. It teaches you more than there is. Definitely recommended.
Methods, standards and work design.......2005-09-26
I got the book on the first day that it was expexted to arrive and its in great shape.
11th edition.......2002-08-30
I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.
Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.
I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.
1955 Concepts in 1999 Edition.......2000-10-07
This antiquated textbook is still used at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The first edition of this book was published in 1955 and, after nine more editions, appears largely unchanged in its mentality. Specifically, the textbook is written for a time when corporations had legions of industrial engineers who did nothing but detailed and tedious time and motion studies. Unfortunately, today's dynamic manufacturing environment renders many of the authors' techniques impractical or even financially hazardous. For example, it emphasizes the need to maximize machine utilization (even if the machine is not considered a bottleneck operation). Practices like these lead to excessive inventory and sub-optimization of the collective manufacturing process. In summary, I believe this textbook does a great disservice to those manufacturing firms that have achieved dramatic productivity gains through the application of lean manufacturing techniques.

Good content, questionable printing quality.......2001-07-18
Good explanation of traditional work measurement techniques and does discuss their application to support the "trendy" lean manufacturing techniques. As such, will help practioners of lean techniques to use a sound engineered/quantified approach. At times, seems like a commercial for author's consulting business. Page paper quality, photocopy pictures and illustrations are not professional quality. Price is questionable given printing quality.
Motion & Time Study for FAT Manufacturing.......2000-10-07
Although this book has valuable information regarding traditional time and motion techniques, it does a poor job of addressing the lean manufacturing aspect. In today's dynamic manufacturing environment, the Industrial Engineer is forever pressed to increase throughput and reduce inventories rather than study time standards in infinite detail. Given these constraints, the fusion of more contemporary lean manufacturing techniques with traditional time and motion studies was severely lacking in this textbook.

Manufacturing revolution.......2000-06-25
As time has progressed, manufacturing professionals have become more detail oriented due to the competition within the industry and also due to the high costs of production. With the concept of lean manufacturing being continuously improved, manufacturing will have a high % of efficiency. My goal is to see manufacturing processes have a 100% efficiency. This is a good book to use in undersstanding the big picture of lean manufacturing.

Simply Excellent.......2007-06-24
I bought this book to help my daughter with her physics class. I just wanted to help her practice with a few of the easier problems given that she is still in high school. Surprisingly, I found the book better in comparison to the problems given in her actual textbook. Obviously, one cannot learn physics from scratch by doing these problems alone. Some initial instruction is required. However, once the basic concepts of physics are learned, this in turn becomes an excellent practice guide in order to master the topics covered. No matter what your level of acheivement is, this book will help you get to the next level. I wish I had found this book a lot sooner.
Amazing book, the naysayers are clueless about its real method ..........2007-03-05
I never bought this book, because every time I looked at it on the shelf I quickly flipped through it, and every time decided it was full of too-simple problems, essentially just the plug & chug variety, not really much to be gained by a physics student.
But my dad had bought it to study for some engineering problems he was working on, and he didn't need it, so I grabbed it, and tucked it away for a few months.
Then I gave myself the goal of working through all 3000 problems, about 25 each night. I had hoped it would help me get better at doing these kind of problems in my head and improve my accuracy, which desperately needed improving.
Here's the deal with this book ... YES it does start with problems so simple that a high-schooler can do them, and then it drills those concepts over and over, but while that's happening, Halpern gradually increases the difficulty of the problems. For all of those people that insult this book as not challenging, I'll wager they would have a hard time with many of the problems by chapter end, at which point Halpern has developed an increasingly complex problem set. And amazingly, after working all the exercises, the problem-solver can handle many or most of them.
It's like that old movie Karate Kid, where the Ralph Machio character gets mad at his teacher for making him paint the fence all day, and then his teacher shows him that all his work has actually done something.
Halpern tells you this at the beginning of the book, that the his method will make you a "master of the art -- and should do so if used properly." The proper way of course, it to struggle with the problems that are a little harder before you are tempted to peek at the answer. (I use a folded paper to cover the answer while I look at the problem.)
If you are preparing or trying to learn all of physics, then you should skip around from chapter to chapter, rather than trying to work through a chapter at a time. This helps you synthesize a variety of information better.
There are a few typos and a few errors, but they are pretty easy to catch. And the redundancy of the problems makes errors less critical anyway.
(Halpern was a professor at my school for my MA in physics, City University of New York, although I never met him. I would like to meet him someday for helping me to become a master, although I still have a long way to go.)
PERFECT.......2007-01-13
Just like it was 30 years ago. Plenty of solved problems to self learn Physics.
Schaum's Solve Problems.......2006-11-06
The information in this problem book are many and some pertain to all physics have similar concepts in the way Alvin Halpen,PH.D has structure this book. Yet, for the newcomer in Physics will not easily understand. This book for resource and problems is fair! But not recommended!
A terrific learning aid!.......2006-07-08
This book has exactly what it says in the title. The problems are well-chosen, and the detailed solutions are written in a way that really aids learning. (The "canned" solutions for many textbooks are full of references to obscure equations that are worked out in the chapter, and so promote a "flip through the pages hunting for the right equation" method of problem solving, which does not lead to strong problem solving competency. In contrast, the solutions in this book start from fundamental equations, the approach used by most good teachers, at least at the college and university level, and they are very well-written.)
There are no explicit review sections, so that this is a supplement to a regular text, rather than a replacement for it. (Review of some particularly difficult concepts _is_ covered via the mechanism of essay-style questions.)
Of course, to get the benefit of this text, you must try to work the problems on your own, before looking at the solutions. This is the best textbook supplement I've yet seen -- buy it, work as many of the problems as you possibly can, and it will _really_ help!

Motion & Time Studies.......2001-11-02
This book is prepared for Industrial Engineering students who whave some manufacturing and statistics knowledge. It is easy to read book so that you can understand easily. The charts and examples are extremly perfect. Although it was written in 30's-40's, and printed in 1980;it is good for all times. There is nothing to be told as bad for it.
Book Description
This book will save you time as you master the basics taught in first-year, calculus-based college physics courses. You'll firmly grasp the all-important building blocks needed for every physical science and all branches of engineering. The many problems included with guided solutions make this potentially daunting subject much easier. Additional problems with answers give you a chance to reinforce what you've learned and gauge your progress as you go. This next-best thing to a private tutor makes especially clear the topics most students find most difficult. It's ideal for independent study, brushup before an exam, or preparation for the MED-CAT and GRE.

Good for review for .......2007-04-18
Aside from the typos (which I have since learned to expect in the Schaum's Outlines), I liked this book. It was concise and provided a means of getting a good review without having to pour through lengthy textbooks.
Sometimes, some steps are skipped from going from one formula to another but filling in those steps helped with the learning process.
Although not a complete study tool for the physics GRE (because it doesn't cover concepts like Lagrangians or advanced quantum mechanics that are found on the physics GRE), I definitely used it in conjunction with my undergraduate textbooks and I'm convinced it did help me with the physics GRE.
I wasn't particularly fond of his treatment of interference but I think he did a really great job with rotational kinematics and nuclear physics. But overall, a good review of physical concepts.
Not a nuclear physicist!.......2007-04-16
I'm just an engineering student, so what do I know? Well, I will tell you this much: there are a lot of errors in this book. Someone else wrote a review that said these errors are a good way to learn. This person was also a practicing physicist! I'm still learning and I don't leave much room for interpretation when something is incorrect. I automatically assume I'm wrong because I'm still learning. This is overkill, but there are a LOT of errors so don't throw caution to the wind. This book also explicitly states that you should understand some "obvious" things. If I did, I'd stick with my textbook! Not completely useless, but can be frustrating.
permitivity of freespace constant listed WRONG in book.......2006-03-08
The book is good other than....
On Pg 244 the book has a MAJOR TYPO !!
the permittivity of freespace constant (a universal constant... used in almost every claculation for several chapters) is not correct. they have it equal to 8.85*E^-11 when really it's
8.85*E-12
In the book's calculations, they use a value k that is equal to the lump sum of 1/(4pi*our constant) which had a correctly calculated value... therfor the answers to their examples are right, but if you plug in their constant value seperately in an equation, your answer will be off.
IT TOOK A LOT OF HAIR PULLING TO FIGURE OUT WHY MY HOMEWORK WASN"T RIGHT! DON'T MISTAKENLY OVERLOOK THIS.
I have written several e-mails to the editing department of the books publisher, but even with requesting a reply on the manner, they have yet to contact me.
Too many errors to be helpful.......2005-12-25
If this book was relatively error free, I would probably give it four or five stars because it outlines college physics for engineers quite nicely. As it is, there are so many errors throughout the book - in equations, solutions, problem statements, etc. - that it will drive even the most persistent student insane. Instead, I suggest that students of college freshman physics use the Schaum's Outline of College Physics, currently in its tenth edition. It is an oldie but a goodie, and the outline is pretty much error-free from beginning to end.
If you have your heart set on working physics problems that make heavy use of calculus, try "Sears and Zemansky's University Physics (10th Edition)", which is out of print. Used copies can usually be found here on Amazon for under $50. There are loads of solved problems and example problems, plus it is a terrific calculus-based college physics text to boot. Since we are talking about a 10th edition, there are few of the errors in that book that you will find in this Schaum's outline.
Error City !.......2005-11-27
The exposition is fairly engaging, and the problems are interesting. However, the answers to many are clearly wrong. For example, in SP 14.14 on pg 179, one can easily see that the answer given is not even dimensionally correct. I would estimate 10% of the problems have incorrect answers. I stopped reading after chapter 14. Too much time is wasted on such problems, only to find YOUR answer WAS correct. I doubt the book was ever proof-read; any physics graduate student worth his/her salt would have caught these errors.

Not helpful in study.......2006-04-25
I tried hard to work with this book. The only its doubtful advantage is the number of examplas. But what to do with them if there is no any explanations, no any reference formulas etc.?
I consider it as a usless book. This is a book for himself, not to help you study the subject. Try SCHAUM Hydraulics...! It is much better even there are less examples.
Very good book.......2003-08-21
Very good book for fluid mechanics, still some of the part for compressible fluids is more confusing. I would highly recommend this for students writing professional exams.
Excellent Guide.......2003-03-19
This book follows Shames textbook extremely well, in fact a lot of the homework questions were in it. It was very helpful for studying.
Build your Fluid Mechanics Muscles and Get Better Grade !!!.......2001-09-28
Build your Fluid Mechanics Muscles and Get Better Grade with this Book!!
I am one of the students who are hungry for various solved problems collected and written by experts in any subject of my interest. This book is really a very powerful tool in your hand. I used this book when I took Engineering Fluid Mechanics course (ME 311) in my university KFUPM, Saudi Arabia. I am sure as God made a little green apple that the students will find this book beneficial from several sides.
Speaking for myself, it helped me in solving some of my homework problems. Sometimes, you do not find the vary problem you are looking for, but you will find a problem that shares the same concept that your homework problem does. That is, regardless of the book you are using for this course, this very powerful book will be fine.
Secondly, I found that some of the questions given in this book are exactly same as the questions given in my major exams or sometime they share the same concepts. This, certainly, will guarantee that you will collect a large amount of scores out of your total score. Needless to say, you will get an excellent grade in this curse, Lord willing. However, this all depends on you.
I think that you should not solve a lot of problems given in this book if and only if you do not face any problems in understanding the major and minor concepts in this course as this book has repeated solved problems sharing the same concepts. Indeed, this book has got thousands of problems and if you spend a lot of time in solving them without paying attention to your other courses you will really be in deep water. You may get a good grade in this course; on the other hand, your grade in other courses will be too bad. Thus, I recommend you to concentrate on the questions that are new to you and on the ones that are similar (in concepts) to the ones that your instructor focuses on in the class and practice some of the Mice Mouse (=easy) problems and ignore their repeated paraphrased ones.
On the Other hand, if you have difficulties in understanding the concepts of this course in your class, then do not worry at all because this wonderful book has a lot of problems with different level of difficulties, form the simplest idea in this course to the most difficult one. You will even find solved problems related to simplest equations formulas. More importantly, you may find problems having new concepts that are not provided by the textbook you are using for this course. Thus, all what you have to do is to burn the mid night oil (= keep practicing) and you will, hopefully, overcome any difficulties and get a good grade.
Moreover, if you are aeronautical or aerospace engineer, you will appreciate this book very much in your aerodynamic courses as it has solved problems about dynamic drag and lift plus fundamentals fluid flow. So, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. Additionally, this book has several FORTRAN Programs that might be helpful in your terms projects.
Unhappily, this book does not explain concepts, it just gives you solved problems. If the authors had explained the concepts of each chapter properly before solving the problems, then I would rate this book at 5 starts.
To sum up, it is really worth to buy it and Good Luck.
nice exercise book !.......1999-10-10
This book really helps me in doing my terribly hard fluid mechanics homework. Also, the problems given are appropriate in preparing for exam. Get this book if you found hard time learning fluid .

Book Description
Hailed as the permanent record of fleeting moments, the cinema emerged at the turn of the nineteenth century as an unprecedented means of capturing time--and this at a moment when disciplines from physics to philosophy, and historical trends from industrialization to the expansion of capitalism, were transforming the very idea of time. In a work that itself captures and reconfigures the passing moments of art, history, and philosophy, Mary Ann Doane shows how the cinema, representing the singular instant of chance and ephemerality in the face of the increasing rationalization and standardization of the day, participated in the structuring of time and contingency in capitalist modernity.
At this book's heart is the cinema's essential paradox: temporal continuity conveyed through "stopped time," the rapid succession of still frames or frozen images. Doane explores the role of this paradox, and of notions of the temporal indeterminacy and instability of an image, in shaping not just cinematic time but also modern ideas about continuity and discontinuity, archivability, contingency and determinism, and temporal irreversibility. A compelling meditation on the status of cinematic knowledge, her book is also an inquiry into the very heart and soul of modernity.

Better Than Before.......2002-03-02
Advanced Cinematherapy : The Girl's Guide to Finding Happiness One Movie at a Time is pretty much like the orginal Cinematherpy, in the fact that it delivers movies for every emotion possibily known to women. But for those who had a bone to pick with the orginal book (many people complained that the movies listed were ones they had already seen),or if you adore movies from a long ago by-gone era, you're in for a real treat! And for those who perfer modern stuff but are tired of watching the latest Oscar winner, don't dispair: there are lots of good indie movies/movies made for cable/movies that were actually good but no one saw, too! The movies listed in Advanced Cinematherapy range from the 30s to the 90s (although the focus is more on older films) and have every type of genre possible: screwball antics, old-fashioned drama, modern day black comedies, movies that turned legeands into legeands, and well...just plain great movies in general.
My only complaint is that too they didn't include some of the better films, such as Moulin Rouge, Bus Stop, Dirty Dancing etc and instead included movies like The First Wives Club. C'mon, do we really need that? Still, all in all, a good risk if you want something new.
